EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness Center of Kansas City, is a trauma-informed, holistic facility aimed at transforming youth mental health care in an underserved urban region. The project responds to the critical shortage of accessible pediatric behavioral health services in Kansas City through innovative design strategies rooted in safety, autonomy, biophilic integration, and community support.

The architectural concept, titled “Ebb and Flow,” draws from natural rhythms to establish a space that gently transitions between stimulation and serenity. This framework supports healing through a dynamic balance of privacy and engagement, solitude and connection. Central to the design is the integration of nature, movement, and creative expression as therapeutic tools—manifested in features like healing gardens, sensory and art rooms, and movement-friendly areas.

Spatially, the facility bridges Beacon Hill Park and the downtown views, preserving important site axes to enhance urban connectivity and ease of access. Parking is discreetly positioned to the north, protecting green space and maintaining pedestrian orientation. The core layout splits inpatient and outpatient services along a central spine stemming from Beacon Hill Lane, with a unified lobby serving as the communal hub. This zoning provides functional clarity while fostering emotional safety through intuitive navigation and clear boundaries.

The project incorporates a diverse and inclusive program of spaces across four floors and 100,000+ square feet, including: - Inpatient units with 12-bed clusters, - Dedicated units for psychiatric, autism, and eating disorders, - Outpatient clinics and partial hospitalization programs, - Sensory, art, yoga, and fitness rooms, - Classrooms, staff areas, administrative support, and outdoor terraces.

Trauma-informed design principles are embedded throughout. Sensory modulation spaces (like rooms with dimmable lights and weighted blankets), calming textures, and biophilic design reduce stress triggers. Safety is prioritized through decentralized nursing stations, clear sightlines, and full-height railings, while patient autonomy is supported by offering choices in environment and activity. Family zones and peer collaboration spaces ensure that healing extends beyond the individual to include caregivers and community support networks.

User personas illustrate the facility’s impact: Peter, a 12-year-old patient, finds emotional refuge through access to nature and expressive outlets, while Jessica, a nurse, benefits from staff wellness areas and effective communication zones. The design anticipates the needs of all users—patients, staff, and families—through environments that are welcoming, intuitive, and non-institutional.

Drawing on case studies, precedent analysis, and interdisciplinary research, the project emphasizes performance indicators such as daylighting, privacy, and community engagement. It adapts best practices from global facilities and literature to ensure robust, evidence-based outcomes.

In sum, this project envisions a healing campus that redefines pediatric mental health care by aligning architecture with emotional well-being, cultural inclusivity, and systemic accessibility. It is both a response to local gaps and a model for future facilities rooted in empathy and resilience.

How can the design of a youth behavioral health facility embody a trauma-informed and holistic approach to create an environment that feels safe, supportive, and healing while fostering a strong sense of community?

How can we create a mental and behavioral health environment in a city that lacks these resources?

How can we design a pediatric mental and behavioral health facility that is accessible to all individuals that come from diverse backgrounds, that also shows up to accomadate the varying needs of these youth within the Kansas City metro area?

KEY FINDINGS + TAKEAWAYS Youth Crisis Residential Facilities (YCRFs) are short-term, trauma-informed care settings for youth, typically offering stays of a few days up to 30 days. These facilities serve youth who have had multiple admissions to psychiatric treatment facilities or are in transition from one. YCRFs provide a structured environment with qualified staff, including licensed professionals, to offer counseling, skills-building, and discharge planning to help prevent future crises and support reintegration into the community.

From 2006 to 2019, 13.1% of adolescent and young adult outpatient visits were related to mental health conditions. This section is cut across the east facde and showcases many of our stacked spaces such as the four story atrium space, the layered balconies along the south facade, and stacked inpatient spaces along the right side of this view. The accent paint helps distinguish each level in the atrium and gives a child-like feel to the space.

This section is cut across the north facade and showcases the double height gym with the track along the edge of the court to not interfear with the gym below. The vehicle sallyport to the right showcases the shading and privacy when dropping off patients at the facility. The outdoor classroom is just above with open views towards downtown.

EAST ELEVATION

This elevation along our facade highlights the vegetation and louvers that provide ample shading and privacy to our building. The mural within our stair begins to showcase the color pallet that we utilized within the interior and reveals the pediatric character of our building. The roof overhangs on the left side of this elevation provide the shading needed on the outpatient and staff balconies.

SOUTH ELEVATION

This elevation along the south side of our building showcases the balconies and curtain wall on the third and fourth levels. The large windows along the outpatient and partial hospitalization units give a large amount of daylight to the patient as well as the staff spaces. The louvers start to show their curved effect that lines up with our concept of ebb and flow.

FRONT FACADE

This view taken from Beacon Hill Park revolves around our concept of connecting back to the surroundings of our site. The dropoff zone near the main entry doors allows for outpatient users to enter the building safely. We want our users to approach the building with a sense of calmness which is why we utilized wood, aluminum panels, and vegetation to heighten the holistic approach of our design.

ENTRY DOORS

The entry doors create a welcoming environment with a curved curtain wall, vegetation, and roof overhang giving a prominent look and improving wayfinding. The materials on the exterior include wood mullions and accents with aluminum panels. We used frosted glass for an increase in privacy while still allowing a general architectural sense to outside viewers.

MAIN LOBBY

The main lobby check-in greets patients and visitors with a large swooping check-in desk and monumental stair. The flooring pattern includes several lvt’s that accentuate the curve of the open atrium above. We decided to incorporate interior vegetation to connect our design back to the park east of the site. We also raised the railing to 6’0” for safety measures but utilized glass railing to not distract from the views.

The space features soft, natural lighting from skylights and expansive windows, while warm tones and curved floor patterns promote a sense of comfort and ease. The corridor includes thoughtfully placed seating alcoves, offering autism patients stimulous zones to read, relax, or socialize. The environment supports both movement and pause, fostering healing through design that encourages autonomy, social connection, and emotional well-being.
