Communication Strategy Local Authority 1 This guide is intended for local authorities to learn how the design principles from the building tested in Gorton can be applied to their local area. The local authority will be educated in the development from the design principles to the final building, which they will see through the application of the building to Gorton.

The design process is intended to be replicated to other disadvantaged areas to ensure equal opportunities to all young people.

Introduction FEMINIST Brief

This year, Atelier PRAXXIS set a brief to define my own project research through feminism. In the past, discourse of feminism has been predominantly focussed on gender equality, however I will focus on ‘intersectional feminism’ in my project, meaning equality for not only gender, but also for race, class, age, environment, social and political.

I have chosen to focus on young people, to find out how we can give them more advantages and equal opportunities in life for a successful future generation. Throughout Studio 1 and 2, I have broken down current outdated youth provision models and designed a masterplan, tested on a site in Gorton for Gen-A incorporating the needs for their future. Studio 3 focusses on developing one of the buildings by generating a set of design principles that can be replicated nationally, offering equal experiences for young people in disadvantaged areas.

Studio 3 will focus on 2 outputs: - A Guide for Local Authorities: A guide showing the development of the project from Studio 2 to Studio 3, and the design principles generated to create this building, tested on the site in Gorton. It is aimed at informing local authorities of how to apply these set of design principles to their own areas in a different way.

- The Youth Experience: A series of comic strips aimed at the young people of Gorton, giving them an insight into how their ideas have been brought to life.

Studio 3 building development design principles The design principles shown below are replicable elements to every site. Through the testing of the proposal in Gorton, the programmatic, materiality and form, and technical design principles are applied to the site to offer guidance on what should be included in the scheme. These will be applied in the same way, however produce different results on differing sites.

WALK A new, wider pedestrian pathway and crossings are proposed adjacent to Hyde road for safety. The building is set back from the road, creating are a large pedestrian area as a meeting place at the front.

OPENSHAW Independent travel is extremely important for young people to the site. Due to the site being proposed on Gorton Park, there are already good transport links. This site plan highlights train stations, bus stations and travel distances around the site.

A

The courtyard is designed in the centre of the surrounding buildings for a private outdoor space for the young people, encouraging external movement between spaces to improve mental and physical well-being. The structural trusses are visible through the polycarbonate curtain walling, and are also repeated outside, acting as supports for a variety of activities, lighting fixtures or art installations.

The courtyard is designed in the centre of the surrounding buildings for a private outdoor space for the young people, encouraging external movement between spaces to improve mental and physical well-being. The structural trusses are visible through the polycarbonate curtain walling, and are also repeated outside, acting as supports for a variety of activities, lighting fixtures or art installations.

The design principles shown in this guide have been generated through the testing of the design on a site in Gorton. When applying the design principles to a different site, you may come up with other principles that you feel could be applied to a number of sites, based on the programme, materiality/form or technical during the process. If this is the case, you can feedback into the guide to inform other local authorities in the future of the information you found. This can be fed back using this form.

The architect will create a set of images, created in a fun comic strip style to be marketed towards your local young people.

The local authority can publish these in their area to ensure that the young people are kept in the loop with the design and see how their ideas have been brought to life. This shows the journeys of different users specific to that area within the scheme. Please turn to document 2 to view how this has been done with the site in Gorton.

Being Personal & Political

Emily Fettes . Studio 3 . PRAXXIS Roadmap

Next Steps As I move forward into my architectural career, I feel confident in being able to bring something unique to a practice. Through this year I have realised that it is evident that some youth provision models, despite being new builds, are extremely outdated and this is something that I would really like to go into in the future.

Feminism The definition of feminism is constantly evolving and as a designer I must be able to challenge when a space is not. This does not only apply to women and I must be able to explain what feminism means in all contexts to others.

Equity I have learnt that different users require different needs and this may not mean making all design decisions equal, but rather focus on creating the most successful design for that particular user.

Digital Learning Due to Covid-19, I found it difficult to switch to a digital learning platform, taking a while to get used to working without my friends. However, I was able to relearn how to really get my head down and start figuring out other ways to do things that mean I was able to produce work that I otherwise may not have done before.

Feminist Spaces Before I joined PRAXXIS, I thought that a feminist space was primarily about unisex toilets and non-male dominated areas. I have had to unlearn this and realise that a feminist space can be designed through anything that creates equality and equity.

Feminist Technologies I have learnt what a feminist technology is and how designing by using a particular material, a particular entrance, or creating a particular vista can bring out the personal in the design and create equitable spaces for many different users.

Utilising Contacts I found it difficult through Studio 1 and 2 to get to grips with creating successful actors.

I worked on this many times and struggled with getting it right. In Studio 3 I decided I would use real people from St Andrew’s Club, London, where my other works and it really brought my project together. I found it successful to be able to relearn how to think outside the box.

Technical Detailing I have always been eager to learn how to detail and during my Part 1 I asked to be put on detailing projects. I used Studio 3 as a platform in which to really explore detailing further and show my understanding.

I really enjoyed this process as I treated it like I would in a working practice, contacting suppliers to receive their technical information and consequently designing a building that works.

Personal, Political, Project Designing a project as part of a feminist atelier has made me always focus on the personal and always on the political. Studio 3 allowed me to really push the personal through my comic strip marketing strategy and focus on the political through my guide to educate local authorities. For me, this was important for being able to ‘sell’ my work convincingly which is an essential part of being an architect.

Bringing the Fun! After I had defined the research and precedent in Studio 1 and 2 and really understood how my programme was going to work, I wanted to focus Studio 3 on making the project fun and bringing this out through my style and communication strategy.

This development in style in my project not only pushed me to learn new things but also allowed me to fully own my project.

Terminology The terminology I have learnt from my tutors has given me the understanding to not stereotype and instead think about how I refer to different people.

I have never worked on a project before where I’ve fully understood what it means to embrace the personal and the political. My project this year has been based on something that is in desperate need of a change, using my political aspect to show how the statistics within youth provision need relooking at. The personal in my project has focused on non-generic user types, using real life people from St Andrew’s Club, London to design spaces that relate to real people’s needs rather than purely being driven by aesthetics.

Being Propositional Being in a feminist atelier has pushed me as a designer to challenge current designs, taking successful elements of spaces designed for young people and creating a new model. I have identified that designing for young people does not only involve them. There are benefits towards youth development to integrate generations and the community, however in current designs, they are kept securely within their own space. I have been propositional by identifying that this can still be achieved whilst also integrating them within the community, which in turn challenges the negative stereotypes between generations.

Being Feminist & Intersectional Before I joined PRAXXIS, I would not have thought my project was feminist, however I have come to learn how to design a space for young people which embraces feminism through the form of intersectionality. Every design decision I made was based on feminism, whether it was creating a statement form with the roof to create a beacon of positivity for young people or using soft materials for acoustic insulation and separate entrances to provide for sensitive users. My intersersectionally feminist project has taught me to always focus on the user and realise that through one design, a variety of different experiences for different users can be achieved successfully.
