A Word from the Artist...

Throughout my adolescence, I was certain that the worst thing I could ever be in life was bored. To avoid this, I picked up an irresponsible amount of hobbies, and spent every waking moment that I wasn’t in school working on one of them. Sometimes it was rehearsing for a musical, other times it was writing a story about being a rockstar, and sometimes it was simply googling “koala facts” and reading whatever came up. At the core of it all, I loved, and still love, to be busy.

Party People is a celebration of the folks who love their hobbies and the people they do them with. Drawing inspiration from books like The Great Animal Search,You Can’t Take a Ballon Into the Metropolitan Museum, and Where’s Waldo, I have always loved big, chaotic illustrations. And, having a background in pattern design, I also have an innate love for artwork that is busy but unified. Creating a hidden picture book allows me to conjure up a multitude of environments and activities, and to hide clues about the characters that go with them. This story is energetic, messy, and full, and at the core of it reads a simple message: Love the things that you do with everything you have, and share them with your friends. The artwork in this book was created using gouache and colored pencil on illustration board, with final edits made in Adobe Photoshop.
