Dear President’s Trophy Selection Committee,

Year after year, the following pages are filled with words and numbers concretely documenting academics, positions, awards, and activities. Although I wholeheartedly believe the women of Kappa Alpha Theta consistently prove themselves to be the best in each one of these categories, the words and numbers are not why all 297 members are proud to call Theta their home. It is my hope that as one closes the back cover of this book, they leave thinking about the intangible qualities expressed between the lines and not simply the conspicuous statistics.

A home is meant to establish roots from which one can grow. Theta, our home, cultivates its members to flourish into the women they hope to become. Each girl who lives underneath our roof is changed for the better and, somehow, simultaneously changes Theta for the better. The reciprocal relationship between our chapter and its members is what allows Theta to continue to thrive in our Panhellenic community over 100 years after its establishment.

To capture the true reason Theta is our home, quotes from current members are scattered throughout our book. You will see common themes of encouragement, faith, excellence, gratitude, hope, comfort, inspiration, friendship, and grace; but the greatest theme is love. Theta has a legacy of pursuing love above all else and for this reason, and this reason alone, Theta is the place that we call home.

Whether handling day-today household issues, teaching us about etiquette, cheering at every intramural game, supporting us at University Sing and Scandals, or simply talking to her girls about life, Jeannie is with us every step of our college careers.

Study and Scholarship Programs Scholarship Requirements

Each member of Theta is required to achieve at least a 2.6 GPA each semester. If a member fails to fulfill this minimum requirement, the member is called to a discussion with the Scholarship Chair and the Scholarship Advisor to affirm their well-being, help them raise their GPA, and enable them to utilize available resources to be successful in their scholastic endeavors. The member can be removed from probation by completing weekly study hours, attending a University College Student Success Series Seminar and achieving a GPA of 2.6 or above.

Study Hours

The women of Kappa Alpha Theta are assigned study hours only if they are placed on academic probation. A member qualifies for academic probation if they do not meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.6. Study hours are beneficial to girls because they keep the girls accountable and help them improve time management skills. The women are required to fill out a form that keeps track of the hours studied each week. The members must have a member of the executive committee of Theta sign the sheet before turning it in.

Theta Tutoring Program

The women of Kappa Alpha Theta sign up to volunteer their services as tutors to other members of the chapter. A master list placed in the study lounge with the tutors’ names, major, contact information, and the subject for which they provide tutoring.

There is also a program that provides information about how to receive help on application essays, resume writing, and interviewing. 
The purpose of our tutoring program is to create unity and sisterhood along while improving academic excellence and performance for our house.

Scholarship Presentation

Every week at the end of Chapter, the Scholarship Chair gives a special presentation that covers topics such as interviewing, studying, writing, and test taking tips or suggestions.

The purpose of the Scholarship Presentation is to provide members with meaningful and useful information to succeed in school.

Study and Scholarship Programs Study Bug Award

The Study Bug Award is presented every week in chapter to a girl who has been noticeably studious that week! The Study Bug Award was implemented to recognize and encourage member’s hard work and dedication to school.

Smarty Panties

Each week in chapter, one outstanding girl is awarded a Victoria’s Secret gift card for an exceptional academic accomplishment. This is a fun way to recognize a sister’s achievement and encourage all girls to continue to work hard and stay focused academically.

4.0 Awards

Each semester Theta awards its 4.0 members with a gift. Awards range from an Orange Leaf Gift Card to a pearl to attach to Chapter Badges. The purpose of this award is to reward 4.0 members for their dedication and success; the award also serves as an incentive for other members to achieve a 4.0.

A-bows

A-bows is a Theta tradition that consists of a competition between the 4 pledge classes to receive the most A’s on tests through the semester. The competition consists of 1 kite for each pledge class. Each time a member turns in verification of an A test they tie a bow on their pledge class’s kite. The one with the most “A-bows” wins! The winning pledge class receives an ice cream party the following semester.

Adopt-A-Faculty

Kappa Alpha Theta is extremely honored to participate in the Adopt-A-Faculty program at the University of Oklahoma. It is a privilege to be able to show our appreciation and build closer relationships with our Adopt-A-Faculty Professor, Phil Gibson, through this program. Febraury 23, 2014, Dr. Gibson came to enjoy refreshments and speak with the women of our chapter. He spoke to us about the best way to approach professors, a very important skill to academic success.

Integrated Business Core “Students get hands-on, real-world training through IBC. From brainstorming and market analysis, to managing employees and the legal implications of business transactions, to selling products and closing the books on the last sale, IBC develops the skills it takes to go launch a successful business. All profits go to local non-profit charities along with ‘sweat equity’ of up to 500 hours of community service each semester.”

Price College of Business In the Fall 2012 semester, Kappa Alpha Theta had two members participate in the Integrated Business Core program: Natalie Wallace and Caitlin Zuerker “IBC pushed me to grow in so many different areas this semester, teaching me real-world skills that I will be using for the rest of my life. I built friendships with people I otherwise probably never would have met, and I was able to be a part of a company that donated over $20,000 to Limbs for Life. I could not be more thankful than I was to be a part of this program!”

Sisterhood Events Each semester, members of Kappa Alpha Theta come together for sisterhood events, often called “Theta Thursdays,” planned by one of our members. Sisterhood events allow members to take time out of their hectic schedules to relax and spend time together. During Fall 2013, member Claire Connor planned three sisterhood events for the chapter.

On Tuesday, October 15, members attended an event at Lewis Jewelers, where they got to spend time together trying on rings and other jewelry, enter to win a contest, and learn more about fine diamonds. Roughly 50 members attended.

“Lewis Jewelers was my favorite sisterhood event. It was so much fun to try on engagement rings with my friends, and we were all so giggly and giddy while doing it.”

On Tuesday, October 29, Theta members attended an OU men’s basketball practice. 30 members attended.

On Thursday, November 21, Theta partnered with another Panhellenic chapter and rented out a movie theater to watch an exclusive premiere of Catching Fire. 85 Theta members attended.

Kite Sis Mentoring Kappa Alpha Theta recognizes what an overwhelming and critical time the beginning of college is for incoming freshmen at the University of Oklahoma. Upon her arrival to the Theta house on bid day, each new member receives a form of mentorship called a “Kite Sis” from a junior class girl. It is very similar to the concept of receiving a Big Sister or Little Sister except the “Kite” that is assigned to the new member is a permanent match. The role of a Kite is to help ease the transition into college life, especially during the first couple of weeks.

The roles of a Kite Sis include but are not limited to: - Showing their Kite each of her class locations on campus before the first day of school - Taking their Kite to buy her books - Offering advice on academic questions concerning class schedule, professors, and choosing a major - Introducing her to girls in the house with similar interests - Being constantly available to answer any questions or get together - Participating in bonding activities such as movie nights, sleepovers, and dinner outings Through the Kite Sis Mentor Program, new members have the opportunity to create close relationships with older members in the house who have experienced the same overwhelming transition into college. Academically, having a Kite Sis opens many doors to a successful college career. From the initial bond and friendship formed on bid day, to the months and years that follow, a Kite Sis will help with tutoring; choosing a major; choosing professors and classes; choosing a study abroad program; applying for organizations, awards, and scholarships; and forming a network of people with similar interests. A Kite Sis is a very special friend and role model to the new member!

To me, home doesn’t mean just a place or location.

HOME is where I am the most comfortable; it’s where I am at my best. These two ideas seem to contradict each other, but for Theta, they are both true. When I’m at Theta, I feel encouraged and comforted and loved for the person that I am. But I’m also challenged. Challenged to be a better version of myself. Home symbolizes a place of growth surrounded by people you love. That is also true of Theta. I have grown more in these past two years than in any other period of my life. I have grown in academics, in involvement, in maturity, in my faith, in my identity, and in relationships. And all of this growth has happened because of the women that I have been surrounded with. Women of wisdom and women of love. Though my feet will leave this home in a couple of years, my heart never will.

Student Government Association Kappa Alpha Theta is proud to have such strong member participation in the University of Oklahoma’s Student Government Association (SGA). Theta is proud to have representation in both the Executive Branch, known as the Full Cabinet, and the Programming Branch, known as the Campus Activities Council.

Executive Branch The Executive Branch of SGA is responsible for advocating on behalf of the student body through programming and representation on boards across campus. It is lead by the President and Vice President, both elected by the student body. The current Vice President of SGA is Theta junior, Madeline Grunewald.

Grunewald has been involved with student government since she has been at OU and has served as a representative in the Sooner Freshman Council and as an officer within the Department of Student Organizations. Grunewald said her favorite part of serving the University of Oklahoma as student body Vice President is, “interacting with her fellow Sooners and working to improve their collegiate experience.” In addition to Grunewald, four other members of Theta serve the Executive Branch is the following capacities: Acting President, Madeline Grunewald Vice President, Madeline Grunewald Executive Assistant to the President, Robin Rainey Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Lauren Abston Coordinator of the Registered Student Organizations Awards of Excellence, Sarah Niemitalo Officer of Green Initiatives, Allison Clanton

Student Government Association Programming Branch The Programming Branch of SGA, or the Campus Activities Council, is responsible for planning and executing campus-wide traditions and events for all students at the University of Oklahoma. Campus Activities Council Concert Series Chair: Abby Kinsinger Executive Committee: Melanie Foster Concert Series is one of Campus Activities Council’s only year-long events. The executive committee is responsible for bringing bands to campus like Karmin, Polyphonic Spree, Aesop Rock and many more, for the entertainment of all OU students. This year we are honored to have our very own senior Abby Kinsinger as the chair of Concert Series.

“Working as the chair of concert series has been such a rewarding experience for me on so many different levels. I truly believe that nothing brings people together better than music does. Despite its challenges, being able to provide that experience for my sooner family through concert series has been an unimaginably fulfilling way to end my last year at OU.” - Abby Kinsinger

High School Leadership Conference High School Leadership Conference (HSLC) is a leadership conference for high school juniors hosted by the University of Oklahoma Campus Activities Council. The weekend conference targets leadership focused high school students who could potentially attend OU. This year, Theta was honored to have two of our very own, Abby Tiedeman and Claire Parker, as Vice Chairs of HSLC. We were also proud to have several other Thetas involved with HSLC – four on the executive committee and four serving as counselors.

CAC Crew CAC Crew is a great way for students to learn about all of the different events that Campus Activities Council has to offer. President’s Leadership Class Kappa Alpha Theta is proud to have 12 freshman members in the President’s Leadership Class this year. Not only is this year’s PLC class full of freshman Thetas, but nine older Thetas participate as well-two Burr Scholars, six George Lynn Cross Mentors, and one Student Advisor.

This year’s PLC class has been given numerous opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and give back to the university community. At the beginning of the year, PLCers had an opportunity to attend a leadership retreat full of chances for bonding with one another and the Burr Scholars, Student Advisors, and distinguished university faculty and staff. Throughout the year, PLCers hear from several speakers on topics ranging from goal setting to how to succeed in interviews. During one of their favorite meetings, PLCers even enjoy a break from studying for finals to help host the Winter Wonderland Holiday Party for underserved children in the Norman community. PLCers even get a chance to visit Boyd House and learn from OU’s very own President, David Boren.

President’s Community Scholars President’s Community Scholars is an incredible organization for freshmen with outstanding hearts for service. This year, Theta is honored to have eight women represented as members in PCS as well as Caitlin Rother serving as Alumni Chair. President’s Community Scholars has given these students the opportunity to meet new people, go on exciting adventures, but most importantly, serve the Norman community. In addition to multiple service projects in small groups and individually, the PCS students went on a weekend retreat, toured the state capitol, and met with President Boren. This semester has been full of learning new things and meeting many influential people on campus for the Theta women in PCS. Their hearts for service are evident in the President’s Community Scholar’s program, in Kappa Alpha Theta, and in all of their endeavors on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Gaylord Ambassadors Two members of Kappa Alpha Theta (senior, Haley O’Hara and junior, Hayley St. John) are ambassadors for the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Ambassadors apply and interview with student leaders and college faculty and staff for the position.

Ambassadors have many duties, including: attending monthly meetings; serving as liaisons between the college and prospective students through tours of the college; and serving as liaisons between the college and alumni who come to campus for special events.

During Fall 2012, Gaylord College celebrated its centennial. Haley and Hayley spent time planning centennial events, hosting alumni, and carrying out tasks throughout the weekend to ensure the Gaylord Centennial celebration ran smoothly. In addition, the ambassadors spent time preparing a special entry for the 2012 Homecoming Parade to surprise Gaylord Dean Joe Foote.

Camp Crimson The women of Kappa Alpha Theta enjoy giving up 5 days of their summer to volunteer at Camp Crimson. This past summer, Theta had 31 members work with the incoming freshmen and transfer students. Caitlin Rother worked as an Orientation Guide and KatieBeth Gardner worked as camp staff. Both were present at all three sessions of Camp Crimson. The other 29 Thetas served as Small Group Leaders. They were able to mentor groups of 20-25 new OU students as they actively became a part of the Sooner family through a few days of teamwork, chants, and a series of dance parties. The camp only lasted Thursday through Saturday, but the “SGLs” trained for two days before the campers arrived. The experience was one each of them would describe as unforgettable. Theta member, Ally Renfroe, recently accepted a position as Orientation Guide for Camp Crimson 2014.

Crimson Club Kappa Alpha Theta is extremely honored to have 9 members in Crimson Club. Additionlly, Niki Haddad serves as secretary and Robin Rainey serves as vice chair. As a valued part of the University of Oklahoma’s most prestigious organization, Crimson Club Members serve as university ambassadors, sharing and upholding the history and traditions of the University of Oklahoma with welcomed visitors.

LEAD Team OU LEAD Team consists of 45 students who serve as peers to Leadership Education and Development. The members of this organization facilitate fun leadership activities, icebreakers, and team-building exercises in the OU and Norman community.

They host activities at OU Events such as Camp Crimson and CAC High School Leadership Conference. LEAD Team coordinates special events for the students of OU such as Greek Community Forum and the annual Leadership Summit. LEAD Team also had the immense pleasure of hosting events for author and motivational speaker Kevin Carroll on the OU Campus in October through his “We All Speak Ball” initiative. This organization is run through the Center of Leadership Development and Volunteerism. We are proud to say that LEAD team has 12 Kappa Alpha Theta members and 6 new members for 2014.

Sooner Freshman Council Sooner Freshman Council (SFC) offers first year students the opportunity to experience multiple facets of campus activities and organizations. Through a competitive application process, around 30 students are chosen to participate in SFC. These 30 students then spend a year learning about ways they can get involved in their university, especially through the Student Government Association (SGA). They are also mentored by upperclassmen who hold different leadership positions on campus. SFC’s main goal is to give these students the connections and resources they need to be informed, involved, and productive leaders on OU’s campus. Theta is proud to be well represented in SFC by five members.

OU Athletes Theta is proud call Kelsey Mckee one of our own. Kelsey is a member of the OU track and crosscountry team. Kelsey practices 17 hours a week and has already been to multiple meets as a freshman! These meets include Tulsa University; Baylor; Arkansas University; Ames, Iowa; Missouri Southern; and The Armory in New York City. Coming up in the spring semester of 2014 she will be traveling to many other college. We are so proud of Kelsey and looking forward to watching her grow doing what she loves most!

The Pride of Oklahoma The “Pride of Oklahoma” boasts 300 students proud to continue the tradition of fostering Sooner Spirit for over a century. The Pride includes members from over 70 different majors across campus resulting in 75% of the band majoring in a field outside of music. The Pride has an average GPA of 3.40 and included students involved in various distinguished academic programs including: National Merit Scholars, Regent’s Scholars, Dean’s List, Honors College, Eagle Scouts, Byrd Scholars, and Goldwater Scholars. The Pride of Oklahoma stands for excellence in musicianship, academics, school spirit, and commitment to the role in our surrounding community.

Freshman, Brenna Nixon, is a trumpet player in the Pride. Of her experience, Brenna said, “I really enjoyed it! What was so neat about doing the Pride and being in Theta was how supportive all of my sisters were. I distinctly remember some girls coming down to the field to take pictures with me!”

Gameday Assistants Kappa Alpha Theta is proud to have our very own Ali Rahill serve as a manager of the OU Men’s Basketball team. This is Rahill’s second year managing the basketball team.

“I love sports and have grown up being a huge OU fan, so when the opportunity of working with the team was offered, I couldn’t pass it up! Even though it’s very time-consuming, I enjoy the positive environment. Coach Kruger is so easy to work under and I appreciate the relationships I’ve made within the program,” Rahill said.

Fine Arts Modern Dance Majors: Meredith Helm Lauren Lundeen (Fine Arts Dean’s Honor Roll) Meredith Helm and Lauren Lundeen are both part of the Contemporary Dance of Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma’s modern dance company. The program requires two hours of technique classes each day, including weekends, and several evening rehearsals.

On top of a rigorous dance schedule, dancers also complete a full academic load. Lundeen is pursuing a double major in Human Relations and Modern Dance.

Panhellenic FSSL Awards Ceremony The University of Oklahoma’s Fraternity and Sorority Student Life (FSSL) has developed a set of standards to determine the successful management of a fraternity/sorority chapter. The FSSL Awards Ceremony takes place at the end of the fall semester where chapters are recognized based on their success in achieving the standards in each category.

Kappa Alpha Theta achieved all seven standards of excellence this 2013-2014 school year:

1. Academic achievement 2. Commitment to founding values 3. Leadership and member development 4. Risk management and social responsibilities 5. Commitment to community service and volunteerism programming 6. Recruitment and education of new members 7. Development and fostering of relationships with stakeholders Theta was one of only two Panhellenic chapters to receive all seven standards of excellence!

In addition, at the FSSL Awards Ceremony, Theta’s very own Ranya Forgotson won the Panhellenic Oustanding Community Service Award for her work starting a non-profit. Only one member of the entire Panhellenic Council wins this award per-year!

Union Programming Board Dancing with the Stars This year, the Union Programming Board hosted their second annual Dancing with the Stars competition benefitting various charities and featuring University of Oklahoma celebrities and dancers. On February 22nd, students and families of participants packed Meacham Auditorium for a star studded show. Kappa Alpha Theta was honored to have three representatives dancing including juniors Robin Rainey and Madeline Grunewald, both featured stars, and freshman Juanita Torres, a featured dancer. Juanita and her partner, Sam Kiehl, took home gold Friday evening and earned the title of Dancing Champions. Robin and her partner, Neal Walia, took home second place, and Madeline earned an honorable mention. Madeline, Student Government Association Acting President and Vice President, said of her dancing experience, “I loved to dance and it was wonderful being able to share that experience with my OU family.�

University Sing In the fall of 2013, 18 members from each of the new pledge classes of Kappa Alpha Theta and Lambda Chi Alpha performed together for the University Sing show themed “Walk of Fame”. For our act, we chose to portray the well-renowned John Travolta and his road to stardom. After auditioning and qualifying for the show, we performed for the crowds and succeeded in winning the awards for Best Choreography and Best Male Lead, as well as receiving 2nd place Overall.

Sooner Scandals This year Theta competed in Scandals with the men of Beta Theta Pi. It was the 70th anniversary of the show and the overall theme was “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” The theme of Theta and Beta’s show was “Video Killed the Radio Star.” The story revolved around two radio stars who found themselves with the threat of being replaced. Instead, the producer wanted to bring in TV stars and end the radio show altogether. Through hard work and dedication, the radio stars won back the favor of the producer and saved the radio show forever. The women enjoyed the experience of working together to compete and coming together as a house for one common goal.

President’s Volunteer Service Award Prestigious Award Honors Outstanding Commitment to Volunteer Service Kappa Alpha Theta has teamed with the White House and President Barack Obama to become a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national program recognizing Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. Established in 2003, President George W. Bush created the award to give presidential recognition to individuals, families, and groups who meet requirements for volunteer service, measured by the number of service hours performed over a 12-month period.

The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group convened

by President George W. Bush to help foster and encourage a culture of volunteer service and civic participation among Americans. Chaired by two-time Super Bowl Champion Darrell Green, with former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and John Glenn as honorary co-chairs, the council is composed of leaders in government, media, entertainment, business, education, and nonprofit organizations.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Volunteer Fair The women of Kappa Alpha Theta greatly value service to our community. As a group we can make a large impact, but we understand members may be passionate about different causes. With this idea in mind, our Philanthropy Chair, Alex Jones, planned a Volunteer Fair for individual service on February 9th, 2013.

Members learned about seven non-profit organizations in hopes of finding where their passion for service resides.

Theta purchased a table with the men of Lambda Chi Alpha to help donate funds to the Susan G Komen Foundation. Six Thetas attended the event for two hours.

Curbside Chronicle When senior Theta Ranya Forgotson sees a magazine, she doesn’t just see paper and ink—she envisions a way to help those in need. As Editor of the Curbside Chronicle, she orchestrates a movement to empower the homeless of OKC. The vision of Curbside Chronicle is “to help people transition out of homelessness,” and achieved by employing the unhoused as vendors of the Curbside Chronicle. This gives homeless people an alternative to panhandling, as well as an open door to other opportunities: thus far, three Vendors have become housed, and another has transitioned to other employment. This is especially impressive considering that the magazine is just eight months old! Ranya’s story begins during the summer before her junior year, when she was introduced to Whitely O’Connor, a Nashville transplant who had seen the far-reaching impacts of The Contributor, a newspaper sold by the homeless in his home city. Together, they dreamed of a similar resource for Oklahoma’s unhoused.

This past July, this dream was realized when the Curbside Chronicle officially launched! Since then, there have been 7000 magazines sold. Half of each magazine is “local interest content,” and the other half is authored by the homeless on topics affecting their lives. In this way, the Chronicle becomes so much more than just monetary aid. Ranya explains that “the beautiful thing" about Curbside Chronicle content is that it covers "the realities in the world that everyone should know about.” Two other Thetas serve on staff for the Curbside Chronicle: Emily Irvin as a writer, and Hunter Brothers as a photographer. As a whole, Ranya described how the Theta sisterhood offered “some of the strongest support” behind the efforts to bring this vision into reality. Together with the passionate people surrounding her, Ranya hopes that the Curbside Chronicle will bring about the realization that “homelessness is a situation and not an identity” while providing real, tangible help to the unhoused.

Kappa Alpha Theta

The HUGS Project The “HUGS” Project is an organization devoted to meeting the needs of our military. It began in Moore, Oklahoma in 2004 with the idea of making a cooling tie for hot weather conditions that can be placed around a soldier’s neck to help cool down body temperature. These ties are called “hugs” because they wrap around the neck. The “HUGS” Project has expanded into so much more today and has members in every state and more than 50 foreign countries.

“I personally was inspired when I first learned about this project and witnessed firsthand what this organization is doing to reach out to our troops. I knew I wanted to get involved and be a part of something that was making a difference in the lives of our brave men and women who protect and defend our freedoms every day.”- Sarah Klein Today, the “HUGS” project sends care packages full of cooling ties, homemade goodies, reading materials, pre-paid phone cards, blankets, toiletry items, cards, letters, and many other miscellaneous items the troops need and appreciate. Over 2,000,000 “HUGS” and 750 tons of care packages have been sent to our troops since it started in 2004.

Over the past 7 years Sarah Klein has been working to promote The “HUGS” Project throughout Oklahoma, raising over $125,000 in cash and merchandise as well as logging more than 1800 volunteer hours. She has had the privilege to speak to students, community groups, and businesses and encourage them to get involved. Young students draw pictures and write letters to be included in the care packages to soldiers. Older students collect items and volunteer their time to assemble packages. Businesses and communities are able to donate needed items, money for postage, and volunteer time to the “HUGS” Project. There are numerous opportunities for people of all ages to reach out and help with the project, and the grateful response from the troops is overwhelming. Sarah Klein discusses her favorite quote that she has received from a troop through working with this project: “…because of your love and support, all of us have a reason to fight, a reason to continue on, and a reason to come home.” – CM , US Army Families across the country have shared their most precious gift by sending their sons, daughters, husbands and wives to fight for our freedom. We must say “thank you” and let these heroes know how much their sacrifice is appreciated. Her goal is to continue spreading the awareness of this organization making sure every soldier receives a “HUG” from home.

“My life has been changed from volunteering with this organization. It has been proven to me over and over again that our freedom is not free. These troops sacrifice more than we will ever understand. There is nothing I could do to repay them for what they have done for our country, but I will forever volunteer to show my support and gratitude, to possibly bring a smile to their face, and send them a little piece of home.” – Sarah Klein

Life Change Ballroom Life Change Ballroom gives kids the opportunity to participate in a fun activity that is beneficial to developing their character. These young boys and girls are learning things far greater than just how to ballroom dance, they are learning discipline, respect, and work ethic. To most of these kids this is something that they have never experienced before. The founder of Life Change Ballroom read an article about Theta’s own Lauren Lundeen from the Miss USA pageant and saw that she was passionate about teaching dance to kids and working with non-profits. She gave Lauren a call and asked her if she would want to get involved. Lauren began working with this organization consistently in October of 2012 and returns to volunteer there every other week.

“This organization is very near and dear to my heart. I have loved every minute of working with kids and getting to be a positive influence in their lives. In the future, I dream of running an organization very similar to Life Change Ballroom. The story of how it changes these kids’ lives is unbelievable. I still see the boy (Emmett) who was my partner and I watch him at his other shows and performances. It is really special to me to stay in contact with him because we have grown very close. It humbles me to be a part of these children’s lives and be there for them when they need someone.”

Make-A-Wish Foundation Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national organization that grants the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions, in attempt to change their lives for the greater. Make-A-Wish thrives on the belief that a single granted wish has potential to bring such a joy that changes the game of a child’s life. Theta is honored to be a part of this organization’s mission this year through three young women with big hearts for this cause.

Sally Harper, a sophomore Theta, is a volunteer “wish granter” at Make-A-Wish. She spends an average of two hours of her time every week with the children at the base here in Oklahoma. She has had the opportunity to work with two wish kids.

“I decided to do it because I wanted these little kids who have had so many bad things happen to them to have a glimpse of something fun and to have something to look forward to during treatments. I’ve never been in their shoes, but I wanted to help give these kids a piece of their childhood back because they are forced to grow up pretty quickly!” –Sally Harper Emily Clair Lonon and Olivia Osterland, both juniors, are volunteer interns for the spring semester 2014 at Make-AWish. Emily works at the office as the referral intern three days a week Olivia works on the development team as the fundraising/events intern on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Because they spend so much time working without pay, they each receive 2-3 class credit hours for their internships.

“I have the privilege of working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the Referral and Volunteer Intern. Each day I take in referrals, I process them, and then I get to make the Welcome Call to the family telling them that their child is going to receive a wish. This is the most special part for me because I provide them with a little glimpse of hope!

As far as working with volunteers, I get to follow up with them and help them with any assistance they may need. The volunteers are the ones who meet with the family and help the child get to the heart of the wish. They also collect the paperwork and help the family every step of the way. Working with Make-A-Wish in any way has been a dream of mine ever since I was in middle school. They truly grant hope, strength, and joy to every person that they impact.” –Emily Clair Lonon “I absolutely love my job! Even though it is unpaid, it is so worth it! Seeing kids get their wishes granted warms my heart. We currently have a huge event coming up on March 4, called “If Purses were Wishes” luncheon. We are having a silent/live auction. I have been writing the script for the emcee, designing the program and the bid cards. Project Illuminate Founded Fall 2013 Founders: Sheridan Hall Chloe Prochaska Involved Thetas: Sheridan Hall Chloe Prochaska Hunter Brothers Alli Corbin Mission Statement: Project Illuminate is a movement encouraging women to walk in the light and the truth of Christ. Society is bombarding women with lies about who they are and where their value comes from. Our goal is to raise awareness of the true value and freedom that Christ has given us. Commit to truth. Walk in light.

Present- Stage One: The organization films one video a month focusing on different categories that raise awareness to common struggles women face. However, the point of the videos is to bring the focus back to the victory and healing we have in the Lord. The video themes include: body image, anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. These themes focus on issues that seem normalized in today’s society, but can be overcome with the Lord. The current purpose of these videos is to encourage girls to seek their identities in Christ, replacing the lies of this world with the truth from God. Project illuminate is founded on the idea that without the truth of Christ we live in darkness, and only truth from God can lift the veil, illuminating life. Project Illuminate currently utilizes social media (Facebook page and blog site: projectilluminate.wix.org) to spread their message.

Future Goals: As Project Illuminate grows in the future, the prayer is that it will become a resource for girls who struggle with the various issues all young people face at some point, functioning as an outreach towards women of all ages living in darkness. Through the videos darkness comes to light. Project Illuminate will also offer groups, meetings, and motivational speaking as resources. The movement is also designed to be an initiative that can begin on other campuses across the country. “My prayer for this organization is to reach as many women as possible. I want these videos to enable women to find freedom in the Lord as they realize they are currently living in darkness but can find healing as they make steps towards light. The progress this organization is making is completely due to the Lord. He started this organization and He is carrying it through. It is out of our hands, and in His.� - Chloe Prochaska 78

Life to Love Kate Raley, senior Theta and OU’s Big Woman on Campus, has left a legacy of learning through her passion for women’s education. This past August, she founded Life to Love. This organization seeks “education and empowerment” on a global scale for women, so that they may “be able to attain the quality of life that they deserve.” This group hopes to change the current status of inadequate education for women: at present, 66 million girls are without a basic education. One of the first initiatives that Kate orchestrated was showing “Girl Rising”: a film that portrays the lives of eight girls in the developing world, all battling various kinds of injustice that bars them from education. This very film is what inspired Kate to be a voice for women’s education, and so it is fitting that the inaugural campus-wide event from her organization was a showing of this film. On November 25, in Meacham Auditorium, the Union Programming Board partnered with Life to Love to screen “Girl Rising” to over 230 attendees!

Today, Kate has lead the group to an even wider influence for good, as Life to Love has blossomed into three chapters, all of which she oversees. Found at Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and of course, OU, Life to Love is growing in its ability to create an impact for positive change. Here at OU, Kate Raley is joined on the Life to Love Board of Directors by another Theta, Brittany Bond, and together they continue the development of avenues to promote women’s education. By explaining this issue in such a way as to reach all aspects of campus life, Life to Love has created a wide base of support from Greek and non-Greek students alike! Kate’s vision for Life to Love includes an emphasis on tangible community service, as well as advocacy through group volunteering as tutors at local-after school programs. Also, Life to Love is co-hosting Joan Eischen, with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Joan Eischen is a foremost speaker on women leading within the workplace, and she will come to Norman to inspire a generation of female leaders. Additionally, Kate is creating a scholarship effort to complete the college tuition of Carnova, a Haitian woman who was tragically prevented from completing her fourth and final year of an economics degree upon the unexpected passing of her father. This scholarship has the potential “bring the Greek community together” to promote women’s education, and it provides a means for OU students to have an impact on an international scale. Within the Theta sisterhood itself, Kate has found a “support system” that helped launch this tremendously capable advocacy group. As Kate looks towards graduation, she endeavors to continue “to leave a sustainable legacy through Life to Love.” Most of all, though, she realizes that the heart of the organization is what leads her to new heights: “you do it because you love it and because you care about it.”

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms This past December, Lauren Abston journeyed to Puerto Rico to volunteer with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF). By working alongside the farm owners, this unique opportunity allowed her to gain insight into sustainable agricultural practices. Her volunteering efforts supported the farmers who are seeking positive environmental and social change, and allowed her to interact with another culture in a profound way.

Lauren Abston: “I traveled to the beautiful island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico. For the two weeks I WWOOFed, it was an incredible experience.

It opened my eyes to the world of organic farming, community supported agriculture, and truly localized food production. It was a great way to see a new place through volunteering and giving time. Learning about the Puerto Rican culture gave me a broader worldview.

I want to go somewhere else and volunteer again—I would recommend this to anyone!”

Community After School Program The Community After School Program (CASP) is a nonprofit agency in Norman that offers after-school care to more than 700 children attending the Norman public elementary schools. Individuals who wish to volunteer for CASP apply and then interview for positions such as Be Smart Tutors and Be Fit Instructors. The tutors are assigned to two students per semester and meet with them twice a week to tutor them in reading and writing. The Be Fit Instructors go to the schools once a week to teach nutrition and exercise classes promoting a healthy lifestyle.

CoffeeTalk CoffeeTalk is a Christian mentorship program in Norman with the mission to provide a strong community of women of all age’s growing together and mentoring each other through Christ. CoffeeTalk divides women into “expresso shots,” which include one adult woman from the community who mentors two or three college women, who in turn mentor a group of high school girls. CoffeeTalk is a charitable organization that seeks to grow and make a positive impact in women’s lives nationwide.

Kappa Alpha Theta has 10 members serving as “grandes.” These women lead weekly bible studies and mentor small groups of Norman high school girls.

Big Event Once a year, all of OU comes together to create a tangible impact in our community. As Thetas, participating in The Big Event gives us the opportunity to continue our living legacy of community service alongside our fellow classmates. Whether it is working with underprivileged children or simply cleaning up a park, we are so aware that each and every act of volunteerism is a part of the larger theme: OU students are a force for an enormous amount of good in our neighborhoods, our cities—and even our world. This year, Allison Mee is serving on the Executive Committee, which works year round to create The Big Event.

For her, Theta involvement in The Big Event is “a simple outpouring of Theta love for those who we have the privilege of serving.” For all of us at OU, The Big Event is the perfect highlight of how much good can come in just one amazing day of working as one to serve others.

Steve Moakler Concert Last April, the women of Kappa Alpha Theta and the men of Alpha Tau Omega hosted a benefit concert for the Curbside Chronicle. Founded by current Theta Ranya Forgotson, the Curbside Chronicle is a newspaper designed to help transition the homeless of Oklahoma City into a different lifestyle. The touring singersongwriter, Steve Moakler, performed live, and with a turnout of over one hundred people, all the funds were raised to cover the Curbside Chronicle’s initial printing costs!

Backroad Anthem Concert The members of Kappa Alpha Theta, Phi Gamma Delta and Delta Tau Delta banded together to hold a benefit concert on April 18th, 2013 supporting Moore Elementary Schools. The new country band Backroad Anthem performed at the concert. All those in attendance greatly enjoyed the music, dancing, and refreshments. Together, we raised over $8,000 dollars.

Relay for Life Relay for Life is an organization here on OU’s campus that aims to raise money for cancer research. Relay for Life is partnered with the American Cancer Society, who is second only to the government in money for cancer research funding. Every day people are being diagnosed with cancer and the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life want to change that. With the money raised from relay for life, cancer patients are able to have rides to and from chemotherapy and research is being funded to find a cure for people diagnosed with cancer. Cancer affects everyone and it is the goal of Relay for Life to cure it. It is the OU Relay for Life’s goal to raise one million dollars in donations in honor of the organization has been on campus for the past 10 years. OU would be the first school in the Big 12 to accomplish this goal.

This past year, Relay for Life was April 20, 2013. It was the highest attended OU Relay for Life thus far and the Relay ended up raising 137,000 dollars for American Cancer Society for the 2012-13 year. This was a 26,000 dollar increase in one academic year! The event started at 7p.m. and went all night long with fun events such as zumba, volleyball, concerts and a memorial lap for loved ones lost. The Relay was truly was a celebration of life!

“Relay for Life means a lot to me because when I was a freshman in high school, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though the care that she received from her doctors was incredible, I knew during her recovery I never wanted someone to have to deal with the this sickness in one of their family members. Cancer shows no bias. Last year one of the Co-Chairs was diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and it was bittersweet to see him go through his journey throughout the year. Fortunately, he received the treatment he needed, and to hear his testimony and his experience first hand from the Relay was incredible. Relay for Life has been one of the biggest blessings in my college career, and I am so thankful to Theta for all their love and support throughout this journey to help support cancer research.” – Callie Crain Many girls in Theta have lost family members or friends because of cancer. Every year Theta has a wonderful turnout to Relay for Life because this cause is so important to us and close to our hearts.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Pumpkin Carve On October 29th, 2013, the women of Kappa Alpha Theta and the men of Lambda Chi Alpha hosted a philanthropy event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norman. The event included a Halloween Themed carnival for children. Lambdas and Thetas dressed up in Halloween costumes, set up booths, provided supplies, and hosted games such as Football Throw, musical chairs, Fishing for Candy, face painting, Bean Bag Toss, Bowling, Moon Bounce, Basketball Shoot and more!

Trick-or-Treat North Greek In early November 2013, the University of Oklahoma North Greek Organization held the second annual Trick-or-Treat North Greek. The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity hosted this event. The women of Kappa Alpha Theta along with the other North Greek houses worked together in order to give neighborhood children a fun and safe environment to trick-or-treat. It was a traditional Halloween experience, but instead of getting candy from family homes, the candy was from Greek homes! Theta women dressed up in costumes and handed out candy to kids. Our members donated many bags of candy for this event as well.

KATs Making Tracks KATs Making Tracks for CASA is Theta’s 17th annual fundraising 5K run. This year’s event raised $54,152.00 for a philanthropy very dear to every Theta’s heart, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates).

There were around 650 runners who registered from all parts of Oklahoma. Kappa Alpha Theta is committed to making a difference in the lives of others.

We are very proud to be a part of a 23-year history of providing support for National CASA. This organization makes sure that abused and neglected children have safe and permanent homes. Special CASA advocates assist the family court system by making recommendations that are in the best interests of abused and neglected children.

Without a doubt, this event touches the life of every person involved- from our sponsors, to parents who participate, to each Theta who takes ownership in reaching out to the hurting and helpless children CASA supports.

Fundraising Efforts In order to raise this money for CASA, we do several different things. At the beginning of the fall semester, every Theta sends out five letters to their family and friends inviting them to donate to and support CASA and the Theta 5K. This year we hosted a benefit night at Pickleman’s. In addition to these events, we publicize our event with flyers, chalking, and posters, as well as hosted a Theta 5K website with additional information and a place to register online. We also encourage our members to recruit their friends and families to register and run in the 5k.

Salvation Army The women of Kappa Alpha Theta, the men of Lambda Chi Alpha and members of the Arab Student Association gathered together to give back to the community during the holiday season. All those in attendance created holiday goodie bags and cards for the Salvation Army. In November 2013, approximately 325 baggies were delivered to Norman households because of this spirited event!

Valentine Cards for the Elderly On February 4, 2013, our members welcomed students from the African American Student Association and the men of Pi Kappa Phi into our home for a service event. We made valentine cards for elderly men and women in assisted living centers around Norman. Over 400 cards were delivered to the following assisted living centers: The Veterans Home, JD McCarty, Inspirations, Heartland Hospice, and Holiday Heights.

Pancake Party Traditionally, Kappa Alpha Theta Pancake Party has been a holiday-themed pancake buffet and social gathering held for University of Oklahoma students and the surrounding community to raise money for a cause near to our hearts each fall semester. This year, Theta hosted its first ever Valentine’s Day themed Pancake Party called, “Breakfast at Theta!” The evening before Valentine’s Day, Breakfast at Theta was held at the big white house on 845 Chautauqua to benefit the Shine Foundation.

The Shine Foundation was established in 2006 when founders Zachary and Shannon Selmon journeyed to Liberia. Their inaugural trip included construction of the Britt Academy, a free dental clinic for local residents, and pastoral care workshops. Most importantly, Zachary and Shannon founded an orphanage, now called “Rainbow Town” to care for local children. Theta considers it an absolute privilege to raise money for such a worthy cause.

On February 13, 2014, over 1,200 people were in attendance during Breakfast at Theta and more than $7,000 was raised to benefit the Shine Foundation. Pancake Party Chair, Claire Parker, said “organizing Pancake Party has been one of the best experiences of my college career thus far. It is so rewarding to see the dedication of Theta members to raise money for such a worthy and life-impacting cause.

There were some bumps along the way since it was the first year the event was during Valentine's Day, but the hard work of my co-chair, vice chairs, and committee made for a super fun evening full of delicious pancakes!"

Theta Day of Service Kappa Alpha Theta celebrates Linked Heart to Heart Day of Service each year on October 19 in honor of founder Bettie Locke Hamilton’s birthday. Thetas across the globe join together in service to spread the widest influence for good. As a part of Kappa Alpha Theta’s annual Day of Service, the Alpha Omicron chapter celebrated Bettie Locke’s birthday by participating in Project Linus. Project Linus, a non-profit organization provides homemade blankets to children in need.

Twenty-five of our sisters came out to the support Project Linus and helped make blankets and write letters of encouragement for the children of OU Children’s Hospital. OU Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Oklahoma City.

Study Abroad Spotlight: A Semester in Europe “From January to June of 2013 I had the privilege of being one of the first four students from the University of Oklahoma to participate in the new reciprocal exchange program at Université Paris-Dauphine (Paris-9). OU business students are quite lucky to have this exchange because Dauphine is one of the finest business establishments in Paris, and I am so honored to have had this experience!

Living in Paris was a dream.

I had been studying French for 7 years, and I could finally speak it and listen to it in everyday life! As an international business and economics major, my dream is to continue on to law school and obtain a J.D. as well as an L.L.M. or a Masters in French Law. My study abroad in Paris was vital for this goal, and, though the experience was challenging (I had to set up a bank account in French, deal with my landlord in French, etc.), it was incredibly rewarding and gave me so many skills that I know will help me in the work force and in life. The friends I made through my exchange come from all over the world, and these relationships will truly continue for the rest of my life.”

Study Abroad Spotlight: A Summer in Europe

I came back a stronger person.

“Studying abroad was unlike anything I have ever experienced. It was the summer before my senior year of college and it was, in a way, my right of passage into adulthood. I was put in so many situations where I could not just dial my parents number and ask for help but I had to think through which train to get on or which street to take to get places. I came back a stronger person. I will never be able to say how grateful I was that OU selected me to do the Journey to Italy program. It was a journey to finding myself, and I feel like I made a lot of discoveries.”

PLC Goes to Italy Arezzo is a Tuscan town nestled in between Rome and Florence, Italy. This quaint town has breathtaking views, charm, culture, and a rich history. Arezzo is also home to an OU site that offers a safe and incredible learning experience. The on-site classes are a regular OU classes and are taught by OU faculty. OU in Arezzo offers a culturally enriching experience that comes along with life long friendships, beautiful scenery, and a learning opportunity unlike any other. This past summer, some of our very own Thetas traveled to Arezzo for this incredible experience!

International Missions Haiti: Over the spring break of 2013, nine Thetas spent their time volunteering in Haiti. Senior Jordan Williams, Juniors Melanie Foster, Claire Parker, Claire Conner, Sarah Livsey, Reid Ballard, Caitlin Zuerker, Emily Clair Lonon, along with sophomore Alex Jones, travelled with Summit Church to work alongside the Mission of Hope in Haiti. Also at Mission of Hope at that time were Mackie Taylor, Perri Roberson, and Sally Harper whom travelled with their families.

Mozambique: From June 2 to June20,2013, Katie Little, Emma Nell, Jacqueline Cuaderes, and Alex Hogan participated in mission work in Mozambique, Africa with Iris Ministries Zimpeto.

Dominican Republic: Last spring break, sophomore and junior thetas Callie Crain, Chloe Prochaska and Blayne Davis, along with senior Lauren Ferguson, teamed up with the campus organization CRU and travelled to the Dominican Republic. On their trip, they spent time evangelizing and working with students at a local university.

Nicaragua: Last spring break, junior Haylee Harker and sophomore Faye Reiley joined Journey Church on a mission trip to Nicaragua. Also on spring break, junior Hope Murray worked with Living Water International to build a clean drinking water well for a village in need.

International Missions Africa: Sam Carter and Natalie Wallace paired with Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI), and travelled to Gaborone, Bostwana, this past summer. While there they worked at a free children’s HIV clinic and tended to the basic needs of their working community as well as saw to the needs of patients.

Morocco: Over Spring Break 2013, senior Quincy Taylor travelled with Journey Church to work alongside 1040i in Taroudany for a mission trip. While there Quincy and her team painted schools as well as provided clean drinking water for a village in need.

Sri Lanka: For a few weeks in Summer 2013, sophomore Lindsey Tschappat journeyed to Sri Lanka.

During her time there she worked as an orphanage volunteer with International Volunteer Headquarters.

International Missions Cambodia: During half of Winter Break 2013, sophomore Alex Jones made the journey to Cambodia with the organization International Medical Relief. The group set up free medicals clinics in five different cities and treated around 6000 people.

Thailand: During the summer of 2013, senior Mackenzie Barnes travelled to Thailand with International Student Volunteers.

The crew worked to teach villages sustainable farming that will help them to produce pesticide free crops and clean water supplies.

Fiji: From July 9 to 26, 2013, sophomore Genny Hickman travelled to Fiji with the Humanitarian Experience for Youth (HEFY). On her trip, Genny and her team helped build septic tanks for multiple houses in a small village.

Zambia, Africa: This past summer Kay Hitzelberger and Laura Joullian made the journey to Zambia, Africa. They worked with an organization called Camp Life who works with Zambian children to teach them biblically as well as mentor them.

OU Cousins It is so honorable and unique to have the OU Cousins program at the University of Oklahoma! This program creates relationships between the international and American students at OU by pairing up an American student and an international student to be “OU Cousins.” These relationships are a phenomenal way for us to build lasting friendships on an international scale—and to get to be introduced to new cultures! Thetas and their Cousins also get to build relationships with the entire OU Cousins community through events such as the OU Cousins Halloween Fair, OU Cousins Thanksgiving Meal, and the OU Cousins Kick Off. “OU Cousins truly connected me on a personal level with my cousin Rebecca. Together, we had the wonderful opportunity to share both life and cultural experiences from each of our cultures. Because of our friendship, I was also introduced to many other international students: some of my favorite moments are dinners with over six languages being spoken at once! OU is such a great place to begin an adventure America, and I’m thrilled just to be a part of her story.”

CASA Del Theta Each spring, Theta hosts an international event at the house titled “CASA Del Theta”. We aim to create a festive environment that demonstrates American culture to foreign students in a way that makes them feel included and comfortable. This year we had a photo booth available for all of our guests and set up a world map that each guest could place a pin in the spot they were from. We invited members from every international student organization on OU’s campus to share in American culture with us. Our international Theta’s from France, Latvi, and Spain attended the event as well. Each guest left the event with a CASA Del Theta tee shirt and our members thoroughly enjoyed sharing American culture while embracing the cultures of students from around the world.

International Little Reveal/Events This year on September 10th, 2013 Kappa Alpha Theta had the opportunity to welcome new international members to our sorority. Several Thetas met our Greek International Littles with open arms! International Littles provides a great way for Thetas to bond with international students and learn more about their respective cultures while getting to share with them the ideals and sisterhood of Kappa Alpha Theta.

After the reveal, the new International Thetas came back to our facility and had dinner with current Thetas.

Lambda/Arab Student Association Holiday Event On November 25th, 2013, the women of Kappa Alpha Theta and the men of Lambda Chi Alpha hosted a multicultural event with members of the Arab Student Association. We gave them a taste of the American Christmas Spirit by creating holiday cards and goodie bags for the Salvation Army. Time flew by as the students chatted about the Christmas culture and Arabian culture with their new international friends!

Multicultural Formal Meal The Women of Kappa Alpha Theta welcomed members from the Lebanese Student Association and the Persian Student Association into our home for a Formal Meal on January 28th, 2014. We sang some of our traditional Theta songs for our visitors and experienced a wonderful sit down meal. Our dining room was filled with great conversation about culture and college all throughout dinner.

African American Student Association The women of Kappa Alpha Theta welcomed the men of Pi Kappa Phi and the students of the African American Student Association into our home on February 4, 2014. All of the OU students enjoyed cupcakes and conversation while creating Valentines for residents of nursing homes around Norman. Although the event was scheduled to last one hour, many of the attendees stayed past the designated ending time. Our chapter was thrilled with the turnout of this event, but above all, forming new friendships with members of the African American Student Association was the highlight of the evening!
