Groundwork for comprehensive infrastructure and technology capital improvements at Birch Creek began in 2015; by 2016, actual projects were underway. Each year—we call them Phases—Birch Creek repaired, upgraded, or completely replaced electrical, Internet, water, and technology systems through the contributions from donors who shared our vision.
Of Phase I, Infrastructure and Technology Plan 2.0 of implementing campus upgrades. With much anticipation after a pause due to the pandemic, professional audience lights were installed for the 2024 season in the Dutton Concert Barn. Concert goers long into the future will experience the fruits of this reinvigorated project that provides industry standard audience lighting. In addition, new flooring was installed in six sleeping rooms used to house teaching assistants and summer staff. Both significant projects speak to the overwhelming generosity and dedication of our donors listed (right) and to all those many Birch Creek friends whose gifts have helped us raise more than $420,000 over the last nine years for infrastructure and technology upgrades.

Founded in 2002, Birch Creek’s Artists in the Schools outreach program (AIS) brings nationally acclaimed Birch Creek faculty members back to Door County after the summer performances have concluded to serve as clinicians for Door County public school music students. In 2023, two faculty from the Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music Session and a guest artist and former Birch Creek student went to three Door County schools where students were engaged in a rhythmic musical adventure celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Faculty members offered powerful insights into music practice and performance and demonstrated techniques that can be immediately applied in the classroom. Students are encouraged to unlock their own unique voice as they learn these important musical skills.
Birch Creek Music Performance Center campus is located on the ancestral homeland of the Menominee, Oneida and Ho-chunk nations. As an organization that stewards our land and educates generations of music students, we acknowledge these nations who have stewarded this land throughout generations. We acknowledge the history of genocide and the forced cessation of their lands and pay respect to their elders past and present. This acknowledgment does not take the place of authentic relationships with indigenous communities; it serves as the first step in honoring this land and the people who cared for it.

A planned gift is any major gift made during one’s lifetime or in their will that is part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. Planned giving allows donors to keep their philanthropic values alive and active through Birch Creek’s mission. Planned Giving categories include The Endowment, The Legacy Circle and Named Gifts.
The Birch Creek Board of Trustees began the process of building an endowment of permanently held funds in 2000. They designated four funds for donors’ gifts within the Birch Creek Endowment, each focusing on different aspects of Birch Creek’s mission. A donor may place contributions in one of the four funds, thereby restricting how earnings from their gifts may be used. The Endowment principal (the gift itself) is everlasting. Listed here are the Funds and the sub-funds within them where a donor has met the minimum gift requirement needed to establish a sub-fund; or, a donor has pledged a significant contribution to name a building, place within a building, faculty chair, or one of Birch Creek’s flagship programs. In italics are the names of those whose gifts were received between May 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024.

In the early years of establishing the Birch Creek Endowment, many memorial gifts were made to honor a donor or designee. Although these funds are no longer active, Birch Creek Board of Trustees recognizes the gifts that were so vital in beginning the Endowment. The principal remains in each fund as restricted by the donor and continues to generate earnings.

We first attended a Birch Creek Big Band Jazz performance over 30 years ago. The excitement and passion of that evening were inspiring, and we have returned every year since, often multiple times. Our discovery of Birch Creek was an awakening to what students can achieve with guidance from the magnificent faculty here.
As music lovers and musicians ourselves, we were impressed with the obvious connection between the students and faculty. Everyone was working diligently and having a great time. We could see the students’ lives were being transformed and each year we hear the performance level of the students rise. We both wish Birch Creek would have been available to us when we were high school students and would have loved the Birch Creek experience, especially Christi, who has a degree in music. We know that many Birch Creek students have gone on to careers in music with the wonderful foundation that has been laid for them here.
And what an opportunity Birch Creek has afforded us by establishing the Wind Ensemble Retreat (formerly Adult Band Camp). Fred has played trumpet in this program and Christi has attended most of the rehearsals and all performances over the last four years. With our participation in Wind Ensemble Retreat, we consider Mona, Jim, Chip, Steve and Michelle our Birch Creek family. Wind Ensemble Retreat has become the highlight of our summers. Here at this magical place, we all share the joy that music brings to our lives.
For these reasons, and many more, we are honored to be members of the Legacy Circle and to help support Birch Creek now and well into the future.
Fred and Christi Moritz, 2024
With admiration, we present the names of Legacy Circle members.

Fran Dutton greets faculty and concertgoers at the Annual James Dutton Memorial Concert at Birch Creek.
The names of many places on our idyllic campus have become familiar and easily identified by all who come to Birch Creek. For many donors, a meaningful step in their philanthropy is to name a scholarship, a room, building or faculty chair in the endowment.
This year, we are excited to announce that the Green Room, where performers eagerly await their turn to perform on the Stage of Stars, many for the first time, will now be known as the Frances Dutton Green Room in the historic James Dutton Concert Barn. Fran Dutton knows more about the impact Birch Creek has on students’ lives than anyone. In 1976, she and her husband, Jim Dutton, founded Birch Creek.
In Fran’s own words, “If Birch Creek helps students decide that they want to go into music, these are great opportunities.” What better way to celebrate her vision than naming the room after her that sets the stage for those musical careers.
For more information on Legacy Circle membership or Named Gifts, please contact Mona Christensen at Birch Creek at (920) 868-2240.
The Play It Forward Annual Fund is used for operational expenses and bridges the gap between tuition paid by families and the true cost of program delivery. See page 53 for more details.
Scholarship donations provide sustaining, continuing tuition support enabling Birch Creek to recruit promising young musicians, encourage students to return in following years, and, for some families, remove barriers to a Birch Creek education that tuition imposes. See donors list on page 52.
Concert sponsorship allows Birch Creek to continue attracting some of the finest musicians and performers in the country, as well as providing our students with the invaluable experience of performing before live audiences. See page 37 for more information.
Capital Gifts
Capital gifts support campus infrastructure projects essential to ongoing student, faculty, and concertgoer safety, and necessary for planning for Birch Creek’s future. See page 8 for more information.
Birch Creek is privileged to receive many gifts throughout the year; listed here are gifts received between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024. Birch Creek is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and donations are receipted for tax purposes.

The Play It Forward Annual Fund is used for operational expenses and is the fund that bridges the gap between tuition paid by families and the true cost of program delivery.
Each student’s program cost is underwritten by $2,700 through gifts to Play It Forward.
True Cost of Program Delivery: $5,100 Play It Forward Donor Support: -$2,700
Remaining Student/Family Tuition Cost: $2,400
We want to ensure that our tuition fees are affordable to most families by covering the gap between the cost of educating a Birch Creek student and the family’s out-ofpocket costs, while also raising additional tuition assistance dollars to help those for whom even our subsidized tuition is a challenge.
Your gift, in any amount, will ensure affordability to a broad and inclusive spectrum of promising young musicians. Donate online at BirchCreek.org/Support or contact the office at (920) 868-3763 or MainOffice@BirchCreek.org.
