Once again, we bring you a round-up of the many and varied activities going on in our growing neighbourhood.

This time of year brings the fun of Halloween and Bonfire Night parties before the long, dark evenings of winter really set in, though, of course, Christmas is not too far away!

Rarely a week goes by at any time of yer without the national news telling us how everyone is glued to their screens these days and can’t be bothered to get involved in their community.

That is absolutely not the case in Emersons Green

or Lyde Green, where we are seeing all sorts of new groups springing up and many people willing to act for the good of others, whether it be campaigning about traffic, joining Neighbourhood Watch or helping run the community centre.

It’s great to see young people being active too, from the tots at Abacus pre-schoo to brave BMX-er Jensen Egan. People of all ages enjoy the weekly parkrun at Pomphrey Hill, which features in this edition.

Pledge on speed curbs can’t come too soon for anxious residents A 20MPH speed limit and double yellow lines should be installed in Lyde Green by the end of the year, South Gloucestershire Council says.

The news will come as a relief to residents who remain concerned about traffic speeds, especially on the roads close to Lyde Green Primary School.

One resident in particular, Laura Borszcz, is extremely concerned after she was nearly hit by a speeding driver as she made her way home from picking her children up from the school.

Speaking of her experience, she said: “I was crossing Willowherb Road with my three children after picking them up from school.

After looking left and right several times to check that the road was clear, we began to cross.

However by the time we had got to the middle of the road, a driver had sped towards us at what I presume was about 40mph, which absolutely terrified us.

Luckily they stopped, but my daughter was so scared that she ran back to the pavement.

“The speed that drivers drive through Lyde Green, at all times of day, is too fast. They probably think that they can’t see anyone coming, but all it takes is for one child to run out for a fatality to occur.

“I find it absolutely shocking that school has been open for two years, and this hasn’t been addressed before. There is nothing in place for road safety for children – no lights, no zig zags, all there is are double yellow lines which I regularly see parents parking on when they come to pick up their children.

“Lyde Green is a community full of children, and I feel that unless the 20mph speed limit is enforced and a pedestrian crossing is put in place outside of the school, it’s only a matter of time until a serious accident happens.”

thinks that drivers need to slow down through the development.

She said: “I find the speeds at which some vehicles drive through the main routes of Lyde Green concerning, especially when there are so many young children around. A lot of the issues around the estate focus on inappropriate parking, and whilst this is also an issue, it’s just another reason why speeds should be kept down.

“Above all, like everyone, I just want my kids to be safe and to be able to play and enjoy the environment they live in.”

The council announced in the spring that traffic curbs and a ban on parking were planned for the main route through the development, including Willowherb Road and Jenner Boulevard as well as several side roads.

Asked by the Voice when these would be implemented, a spokesman said:“We are yet to confirm an exact date for the 20mph limit and waiting restrictions in Lyde Green to come in to operation. However, work is in progress to secure the necessary traffic regulation orders and it is hoped that both will be functional before the end of 2017.”

The council is now carrying out a new consultation on installing enforceable School Keep Clear restrictions on Willowherb Road that will prevent vehicles stopping outside the school entrances.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the proposal needs to do so by November 16 quoting the reference L3/DFA/STOP/ PT.5731 Further details can be found on the consultations section of the South Glos website.

The council is also consulting on banning traffic on Howsmoor Lane from Willowherb Road to the entrance to the new sports ground to provide a safer pedestrian route.

Support for Macmillan CHILDREN, families and staff from Abacus Pre-School in Mangotsfield joined with their local church to raise money for cancer support.

They held a coffee morning with elders from Mangotsfield and Castle Green United Reformed Church, raising more than £200 for Macmillan.

Dawne Knight, pre-school manager, said: “Parents kindly donated a selection of cakes and money for the children to choose a yummy cake to enjoy.

“It was lovely to see a couple of parents come along to join in with a fantastic turn out of church elders helping support this very worthy event. Along with the cake sale a raffle was held and with everyone’s generosity and support a grand total of £216.43 was raised for Macmillan.”

The event was part of Macmillan’s annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

A CRAZE for painting and hiding pebbles has taken off in Emersons Green and Lyde Green over recent weeks.

The Bristol Rocks Facebook page, which has more than 20,000 members, encourages people to post photos of any decorated rocks they find and then hide them again to bring pleasure to others. There’s now an Emersons’ Rocks group too, as well as Remembrance Rocks initiatives to support the Poppy Appeal.

Council backs 18a in principle

Costa’s sudden closure hailed as victory for people power A BRANCH of Costa that opened in a former bank in Downend village centre in the spring has shut suddenly.

The closure of the coffee shop, which took over the premises vacated by The Hungry Caterpillar play cafe, came overnight on Friday October 13. All signs were removed from the building.

A spokesman for the chain told Downend Voice: “As part of Costa’s ongoing property strategy, the store on Badminton Road in Bristol has closed and all team members will be relocated to nearby stores in the coming weeks. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience the closure may have caused customers and hope to welcome them into other Costas within the city.”

Many residents have hailed the closure after only five months as a victory for people power, saying that customers had remained loyal to the four independent coffee shops in the village: Melanie's Kitchen, Freshly Ground, Brownes and the Beehive.

Costa did not have to gain planning permission for a change of use as there had already been a cafe established on the site but parish councillors and others urged locals to back the existing outlets.

already a Costa in Emersons Green and the coffee could also be bought at petrol stations.

Sally Lockwood contacted the Voice to say the closure was: "a real David and Goliath story. I don’t know the full facts but it would appear that the local community stayed loyal to the small independent coffee shops."

This was echoed by many commenters on social media, although some said they had liked the Costa because it had more space for buggies and wheelchairs, accessible toilets and longer opening hours.

EMERSONS Green Town Council has voted to support the idea of a new junction 18a on the M4.

Seven councillors took part in the vote at the full council meeting on October 12.

They passed a resolution explaining why they preferred the suggested western option behind the science park. It said: • A junction in this area has been requested for years by people living in the area • Industrial sites and the science park have been developed in this area with a view to better motorway access • A junction in this area will support better access to employment • The eastern option would be more disruptive and would have an impact on forestry.

South Gloucestershire Council’s public consultation on the junction and link road has closed and a report is expected in March, before a decision is made as to whether to pursue the idea.

n LYDE GREEN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

First AGM for Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch THE newly formed Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch held its first AGM at Emersons Green Village Hall, giving residents the chance to find out more about the scheme and its aims.

The scheme, which is run by volunteers, was formed earlier this year with the hope of tackling crime in the Lyde Green area by encouraging residents to communicate with each other as well as the police. Every resident is automatically a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, which involves individuals simply looking out for their neighbours and the community, and reporting any issues or suspicious activity.

In Lyde Green, the Watch has been split into 10 smaller areas or zones, which will be adjusted over time as the area develops.

Each zone will be managed by a dedicated zone coordinator, who will be receive email alerts from the police including advice on crime prevention, and the latest crime reports and updates.

They are also responsible for passing crime information onto residents within their area and encouraging members to communicate effectively.

Earlier this year the Watch was able to raise the £500 that it needed to purchase Neighbourhood Watch signage for the Lyde Green area. The signs have now been purchased, and they will be installed across the development in the coming months.

At the AGM, an election took place to establish Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch role, and PC Paul Fortune and others from the Downend and Siston Police Beat Team gave an update on crime in the local area. Also in attendance were representatives from the Insurance Helpline, who contributed to the purchase of the Neighbourhood Watch signage and Bill Crocker, Bromley Heath Neighbourhood Watch chairman.

Mum Rachel celebrates book launch A DOWNEND mum could help thousands of children who have coordination difficulties with her recently published book for parents and professionals.

Rachel White, 45, a paediatric occupational therapist, came up with the idea after working with children in schools in Bristol.

The 256-page tome, called Helping Children to Improve Their Gross Motor Skills, was six years in the making and is aimed to help any child with coordination difficulties, such as children with a dyspraxia diagnosis, global developmental delay, Down Syndrome, learning disabilities or autism.

The book features hundreds of activities to help youngsters do things more able bodied children take for granted, such as ride a scooter, throw a ball or hop.

Each activity is broken down in small, simple steps with the idea that children can build their skills through practice and repetition with an adult supporting them until they reach a point where they can join in with their mainstream peers.

Rachel said: “The book doesn’t look at children of a specific age and say they should be at a certain stage. It’s all about skills that children want to learn and taking it from its first very basic steps. So, for example, one of the programmes teaches children how to throw and catch a tennis ball but they would actually start by catching a balloon. It’s all about taking it right back to basics and building skills in a step-by-step way.

“The value of the book is that it’s a very practical resource with lots of ideas and activities that are fun for children as well as for the adults working with them.”

Before the book was published it went through a yearlong piloting process with various schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Rachel said: “Through the book children can get to the stage where they feel more confident in getting involved in leisure

activities where it might have been difficult for them before because they hadn’t been that motivated to try.

“One of the great pleasures of my job is when we hold a bike group and I’m running alongside a child and I let go and see them sail off. You can see that freedom and independence in their faces; they are just so delighted with themselves.”

The book turned out to be very much a local affair with Downendphotographer Fion a Georgeson-Powell and Rachel’s husband Terry taking the photos.

All the ‘models’ came from Stanbridge Primary School, where Rachel’s daughters, Phoebe, eight, and five-year-old Keira, attend.

Rachel said: “It’s got a real local feel to it. It even has photos of the swings and table tennis table at Page Park. There was lots of local input.”

Rachel held a launch party for more than 50 contributors at the Bean Tree Cafe in Page Park, where she presented books to Faye Bertham, Head Teacher of Stanbridge Primary School and Fiona Georgeson-Powell, photographer.

Hayley’s on a mission to help homeless

A MUM of four is waging a war against Bristol's homelessness and the red tape she says is hindering men and women getting the support they need.

Hayley Jennings, 34, has volunteered with various charities for the past five years after witnessing her father living rough on the streets.

For the past few months, Hayley and a group volunteers have been spending Saturday evenings travelling around Broadmead, the Bear Pit and the city centre handing out food, tents, sleeping bags, blankets and toiletries.

The volunteers are all members of a Facebook page called Help Homeless Bristol which Hayley recently set up. She was staggered to see its membership rise to more than 2,500 in a matter of weeks.

"I didn't realise the group was going to take off as well it it has and everyone has been fantastic.

"As an individual, I don't have to adhere to any red tape. People

who are members of the group give donations such as food and clothes and these will go directly to the homeless. Members can also post shout outs for sleeping bags, tents and food when they see homeless people, which means the items go directly to the people who need them.

Hayley has been inundated with items, which she has been keeping at her Kingswood home.

"Recently we put together 30 care packs with items that had been donated by two women who own a gym. They each contained a new pair of socks, toothpaste and brush, shower gel and sanitary towels. We also made up 40 bags, each with a cereal bar, chocolate bars, biscuits and crisps as well as making up 50 sandwiches. We also went out with flasks of hot water to make hot chocolate, tea, coffee, instant soups and pastas."

the word out at the classes she runs at Hanham Community Centre. Members have now been arriving at class laden with items such as blankets, sleeping bags, coats, socks, pants, hats, scarves and gloves.

Hayley knows she is just scratching the surface of Bristol's homeless problem. Longer term solutions are needed to make a bigger impact.

"What would also be good is to have somewhere in Bristol that homeless people can use to store things. They have to lug sleeping bags and blankets around with them all day because if they leave them anywhere, they'll be gone by the time they've returned."

A Just Giving page has been set up to fund a large shed to store donations, special high performance sleeping bags, flasks, insulated food bags and hi-vis jackets for volunteers.

Stop the doorstep tricksters HAVE you had people cold-calling or delivering leaflets for home maintenance or gardening work?

We’ve had recent reports of people offering to clean driveways or make roof or gutter repairs.

While many legitimate firms use promotional leaflets, it’s a favourite tactic for so-called ‘rogue traders’ – people who persuade householders to have work done unnecessarily, to a poor standard or who overcharge.

There’s a link between these rogue traders, who may have convictions for fraud and other offences, and burglars.

There was a recent incident of a man who offered to make repairs for an elderly householder in Bristol, then stole cash from him and made off without doing any work. Thanks to a call with vehicle details from a concerned witness,

we made an arrest.

We work closely with South Gloucestershire Council’s trading standards officers to deal with offenders and want to remind you how you can steer clear of unscrupulous traders: • be suspicious of any business leaflet which only contains a mobile number, with no other contact details. Genuine businesses will include the trader’s full name, address and landline telephone number • don’t deal with cold callers on your doorstep • don’t open the door – use the door chain or deal with them through a window or letter box • get three quotes for work • do not pay for work or materials in advance or hand over a cash deposit

A great start for Lyde Green Veterans THE new Lyde Green Veterans football team are celebrating after they achieved wins in all heir first four matches.

The team was created by Lyde Green resident Craig Pellowe, who has played football for most of his life. When he moved to the area in November 2015, he recognised the potential to form a team and decided to set up one up.

Lyde Green Veterans are part of the local veterans league, aimed at men aged 35 and over, who have played football in the past and are now looking to balance playing and training alongside their other commitments. However, Craig is keen to reinforce that they want to meet as many local lads as possible and will try and include younger players in matches wherever they can.

He said: “When I first joined the Lyde Green Local Facebook group I noticed that there were lots of things going on in Lyde Green for the ladies, but nothing for the gents. I started to think about what I could set up that older guys like myself could relate to – and of course football came to mind!

“It’s taken a while to get the team set up, and in June I posted a message in the Facebook group to see who was interested and to organise a kickabout. Since then it has grown and grown, which is fantastic.

“Forming Lyde Green Veterans been a great way to get people together and to meet members of the community that you wouldn’t otherwise get to know. We had a big team social

recently too, where 15 people came along for a curry and a few pints. Sharing taxis home afterwards is obviously really easy, and arranging lift shares for matches is simple too as everyone lives close by. ” Currently about 22 local men attend the weekly training session on the green by the science park. At the moment there is only one team that plays matches once a month on Sundays, but Craig says that there is the potential for it to grow to another team, as well as forming Saturday teams and youth teams in the future.

So far, the Division Five team has achieved great success in the first four matches it has played: a pre season game against Division Three side Hillcrest where they won 7 - 4, a cup game against Division One team LB United where they won 6 - 2, and two league games where they won

training and home games, which we currently play in Brislington.

We really want to get the local community to come and watch the games, to create as much buzz and support for the team as possible, getting partners and children involved and further growing the community spirit.

“We would also be really keen to hear from local businesses who might be interested in sponsoring a new kit for the team. We are currently using an old blue and red kit from a team that I used to play for a few years’ ago, and it would be brilliant if we could get a green coloured one of our own instead!”

First build your oven ... then bake enough pizza for 400 children

BUDDING chefs from Barley Close Primary School in Mangotsfield have been putting their cooking skills to the test after getting their very own pizza oven.

The school, which views cookery as an important life skill, purchased the oven with a grant from the Department for Education to enhance its forest school provision.

Pupils, as well as tots from the school's nursery, helped build the wood-fired cob oven when they were visited for the week by Matthew Lloyd from the Fabulous Cob Oven Company.

But the best was yet to come the youngsters spent the whole of the Friday cooking pizzas to feed all 400 children.

Headteacher Jo Williams

said: "Our school strongly believes in making learning fun and real. We like to promote healthy lifestyles and life-skills for when the children are older, as well as covering the objectives of the National Curriculum. The pizza oven allowed all of this to happen: design and technology

- making the pizza oven; maths - weighing the ingredients; English - writing about it; geography - soil types and finally cooking. The children loved learning outside, getting dirty, working as a team and seeing the end results within a week.

Ultra triathlon raises more than £12,000 PAUL Dennett, from Emersons Green, and two friends raised more than £12,000 for Children’s Hospice South West by doing an ultra triathlon - but his efforts do not stop there.

Paul has now set up a social and friendly membership club for novice and more experienced athletes, and a portion of each membership fee is going to the hospice at Charlton Farm, Wraxall.

He chose to support the hospice as it had supported his friend Jim, whose son Jack died there. With Marc Thomas and Phill Edwards, from Bradley Stoke, he took part in the Bristol Brutal, which involved covering 320 miles over three days on foot and by bike. Day 1 consisted of a 6.2 mile swim and 90 mile cycle. Day 2 was a 171.4 mile cycle and Day 3 saw them running 52.4 miles; the equivalent of a double marathon.

The three men attended The Glitter Ball at Ashton Gate Stadium to celebrate Charlton Farm’s tenth birthday. It was there they

Admiring baroque beauty in Vienna IT'S not always necessary to travel to distant lands (especially when we have so much beauty in Europe to marvel at!) This time, I want to share with you a story of spending a long weekend in Vienna; where everywhere you look, buildings evoke daydreams of fairytales and magical kingdoms.

Upon arriving at the airport, my fiance and I chose to purchase the Vienna City Card as we knew we were going to devote most of our time to the famous museums and palaces. With our Vienna cards tucked away in our pockets, we raced for our train. But, in all of our hurry and excitement to get to the city’s centre, we jumped onto the wrong train! The inspector noticed our tickets weren’t correct just as the doors were closing. We looked

at each other in anticipation, but thankfully, the inspector took pity on us and opened the doors so we could find a different train on the neighbouring platform.

Now settled on the correct train, we were still itching to sightsee. St Stephen’s Church was first on the list before even dropping our suitcases off at our apartment. Once inside, mahogany pillars, colourful stained glass windows and purple lighting shone down on us from all sides, transporting us into a simpler world. We may have looked amusing pulling our little suitcases

around this incredible place, but we were unaware of anyone or anything. Our eyes were entirely focused on this stunning church.

And this was only the first part of one day!

Across the following few days, we gathered as much beauty and culture as we could from the Austrian capital. From romantic walks along the Donaukanal, to marvelling at the crown jewels inside Hofburg Palace and gazing at exquisite artwork inside Belvedere Palace, we tried to see as much as we could.

However, a few extraordinary highlights would have to include: the Egyptian exhibits within Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Gloriette and zoo at Schonbrunn Palace, admiring the city lights from on top of the Wiener Riesenrad ferris wheel and standing, awestruck, facing row upon row of ancient books and documents inside the Nationalbibliothek.

Kunsthistorisches Museum offers many hours of admiring history, but it was the several rooms of Egyptian artefacts that took my breath away. There were intricately decorated tombs, plaques carved out in hieroglyphs and golden treasures just waiting to be discovered.

BMX ace Jensen shows grit to win again BMX rider Jensen Egan has been crowned South West Champion for the second year running despite competing just weeks after witnessing his dad suffer serious injuries.

The nine-year-old watched excitedly as dad Jason competed in the 30 and over masters category of the British BMX Championships, which took place in Derby in August. The 31-year-old, who had already won the South West regional title this season, was in podium position when another rider hit his wheel, causing Jason to fall off, breaking his hip and leg.

But despite this, brave Jensen went on win the South West BMX Championship, travelling to Bideford in Devon with mum Kiri just two weeks later.

“Jason had some quite severe injuries which Jensen watched which was really hard for him,” said Kiri. “However, they are very used to seeing crashes and although Jason was taken to hospital by ambulance none of us realised the severity of his injuries at the time.

“A few weeks later it was the South West Championships and originally I didn’t intend to taken Jensen. But despite seeing his dad’s accident, he didn’t lose the

love for the bike so I decided I would take him. He won in an incredible race and I was really proud of him.It was double heartbreaking as last year Jason also won the SW championships alongside Jensen.”

Sadly Jason was still in hospital so was unable to be there to witness his son’s victory.

“We had to go on our own and that made it all the more poignant. The riders earn their places at the championships throughout the year in their regional series so, as long as Jason was being looked after, we felt we should go.

“I ran to meet Jensen at the finish line and when he won he said, ‘I did it for my dad’. I was incredibly proud and both myself and Jensen were crying. Jensen rang his dad to tell him and they had a little moment together.”

It was equally tear-jerking at the presentation evening.

Kiri said: “They give out end of season trophies from regional events on the same night. Because Jensen’s dad had won the regional series this year Jensen went up on the podium and took the trophy for his dad whilst holding up his dad’s jersey with his name on. That was very overwhelming to watch.”

Jensen, who has also been crowned Bristol BMX champion for past four years, has now been placed 16th in the country, finishing eighth regionally despite racing in an older age category.

was flooring his age group so we raised him up to bring him on. It’s been a very good year for him.”

Team Egan, as the father and son duo are affectionately know, travel throughout the year competing in regional, national and club level races from Scotland to Cornwall.

They raced the past two seasons for national team, Factory Team Bikes, but from 2018 will race with Psykopath Industries, a national team based at Bristol BMX Club in Patchway.

Jensen, a pupil at Barley Close Community Primary School, attends weekly training and racing on Wednesday evenings from April to September and once a month on Sunday afternoons in winter.

Meanwhile Jason is continuing to recover. He is out of his wheelchair and is using crutches but is unable to return to his job as a panel beater in Longwell Green for at least four months. Despite this, Jason is keen to get back on his bike and compete once again.

Kiri said: “They call it a neck of femur injury where the ball of his femur at the top of his leg was pushed up into his hip. He had to have screws and bolts put in, going from his hip right the way down his leg. It’s a six month recovery time and we have been told he’ll be off work for four to five months. It’s an unusual

injury to ascertain for someone Jason’s age because normally it’s an injury older people get.

Doctors say they don’t really have an outlook as to if or when he’ll ride again but we are being positive and Jason has every intention of riding again.

“The doctors say he is going in the right direction and Jensen is taking it very well. We are all trying to be positive and think that his dad will race again.

“It hasn’t put Jensen off at all; he’s on his bike all the time. We are an absolute BMX family and Jensen is the centre of it.”

n NEWS A GROUP who meet in Bromley Heath are keeping the age old tradition of quilting well and truly alive.

Emersons Green Quilters bring together a community interested in continuing the tradition and enjoy hearing from people who have used quilting and patchwork in many different forms.

Members meet monthly where they hear from speakers as well as hosting a show and tell section where members are able to present their most recent projects.

Some members regularly quilt for charities and share their makes with other members including providing information on the charities themselves.

Quilter Natalie Anderson said: "We have heard from members who have created quilts made from passed family member's clothing to remember them, some follow designs, and some freely create more modern ideas."

practical items such as a covering used on the bed for warmth.

This developed into the craft

being used for more decorative and practical purposes. Natalie said: "Today you will find many people use quilting as a way to finalise forms of patchwork, and/ or to make more intricate pieces of art. You will see quilting used on an array of items from bed coverings to blankets, hand bags and more."

Emersons Green Quilters have a mix of people, from enthusiastic quilters to some who are just interested in hearing about the craft.

If you are interested in finding out more about the club, you can pop along to meet members during one of their meetings.

They meet every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Christ Church Centre, Quakers Road, Bromley Heath.

n LYDE GREEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION SINCE we were selected by South Gloucestershire Council as the operator for the new Lyde Green Community Centre (LGCC) it’s been all go to get ready for the anticipated opening in early 2018.

We held an engagement event for the community last month where we invited Lyde Green residents to find out more and share their views. Residents also had the chance to vote for our new

All go for opening in 2018 logo. It was brilliant to see such a good turnout at the event and the discussion tables produced some great ideas that we can’t wait to put into practice.

Following our event, we have taken residents’ views on board for future work. We’ve also spoken

with lots of potential hirers and have been putting together a provisional booking timetable; it’s looking positive and is beginning to get full so let us know if you’re interested in hiring the space.

We’re also making progress with seeking an operator for the café in the LGCC and are looking for volunteers to sit on a community panel as part of the selection process later this month – give us a shout if you’d like to be a part of this.

In recent weeks we visited the LGCC build; a brief video tour from early October is available on our Facebook page if you’re interested/ nosey enough! We participated in training on the fundamentals like the alarm systems, heating and CCTV. It’s all looking great and we’re really excited.

The next steps are to finalise our discussions with the Council, make sure our policies are all up to date and spend time seeking funding and assistance with the fit

out of the building itself. We’ll need lots of help to find equipment and funding, so let us know if you can help.

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP I WANTED to use this month’s column to thank residents for taking the time to share their views as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s recent consultation regarding the proposals for the new M4 link road. As readers will know – I have long campaigned for the new junction to be built either at the Willy Wicket junction where the ring road and the M4 are in very close proximity, or on the land behind the Bristol and Bath Science Park. The council’s public consultation on the proposals closed on October 16 and it was great to see so many people contributing to this process either by writing to me or by contacting the council directly.

I was also very pleased that so many local residents signed my petition which called on the eastern option through Pucklechurch to be dropped in favour of the western proposal, which I believe will be of great benefit to the local area both in terms of easing congestion and helping local businesses. I sent my joint consultation response, along with Luke Hall MP, to South

Gloucestershire Council and was delighted to be able to enclose a strong petition containing 2,000 signatures which will demonstrate the strength of local feeling surrounding the proposals.

Throughout my time as the MP for Kingswood, I have worked hard to protect the many beautiful green spaces around us from any unnecessary development. I feel that we sent a strong and clear message through the consultation process and I look forward to the response in March which must take account of the overwhelming strength of local feeling that the eastern option is not – nor should have been considered - a viable proposal.

On a separate matter, following the tragic death of Ross and Clare Simons who were killed by a disqualified driver whilst cycling in Hanham in 2013, I am pleased to note that the Ministry of Justice has a recently announced that they will be introducing far stricter penalties for those who cause death or injury by dangerous driving. n AROUND THE WIs DOWNEND WI HELLO, our September meeting was a learning experience for all, and a big thank you to all the contributors.

We had bike maintenance from

MANGOTSFIELD WI OUR October annual meeting always proves to be an interesting and productive evening.

The annual report was read and the previous 12 months was summarised by our 2017 secretary Sue. It is great to reflect on what we have done as a WI over the previous year. We have enjoyed a diverse and interesting program of events. Who knew that 60 ladies within the age range of 30 to 80+ could have so much fun.

Looking ahead to our meeting on Monday November 27, we will be entering the festive spirit; joining us will be Caroline to demonstrate a Christmas floral arrangement. We hope to let everyone have a go at making one during the evening. The Manor Cup Competition is "a Christmas cracker". Use your imagination ladies!

We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us.

BROMLEY HEATH WI IT is that time of year again – time for our Annual General Meeting and election of our president and committee. The year has flown by and it certainly doesn’t seem like a whole year since our last AGM. It was a busy night with a talk and a social as well as the business of the AGM. We welcomed two representatives from the Jessie May Trust, our nominated charity for the year. They talked about the wonderful work that the charity does to care for terminally ill children at home and to support their families. For this he had to get the permission of the Pope.

Angela’s collection contains scenes from countries as far apart as South America, Europe and near and far eastern countries.

There's no such thing as bad weather Mud pie explorers with Nickie Corr AS it starts to get wetter and a tad chillier the temptation to keep children indoors ‘protected’ from the elements begins to creep in. This article is a call for you to resist this temptation! At Mud Pie Explorers we firmly agree with John Ruskin’s view that: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather”.

Some of our most memorable and giggly times we’ve spent in the woods with children have taken place in the pouring rain.

We’ve laughed while catching hail in our mouths and made the most amazing mud slides which parents have literally thrown themselves into! We’ve hunted for Rain Fairies with torches in the dark, yes they DO exist. The best picnic I ever had

was in the woods in the snow.

So long as children are appropriately dressed so called ‘bad weather’ can provide magical moments that will stay with them for a lifetime! Layers are best as they hold the heat more efficiently.

You don’t need fancy base layers (they are good but not essential)

as old pyjama bottoms or leggings with a slightly small t-shirt will do the job. Hats and gloves are the most essential bit of kit. We lose the most heat through our heads and cold fingers simply are not fun.

So please this winter wrap yourselves up and get outside making memories together. A

warm bath and a cuppa tea will never be as pleasurable after an adventure in the woods on a chilly day, trust me, I’ve done it once or twice!

Get ready for Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops CHRISTMAS at Cleeve Wood Road shops in Downend is back for another triumphant year in 2017.

This year's charity event has moved to a Sunday to allow for more space and will take place on Sunday November 26 from 12-4pm.

This year’s attractions include fairground rides, live entertainment, local stalls, meet Santa in his indoor grotto as well as the ever-popular large raffle, a nearly new toy stall, a used book stall and games for children.

The event will also be attended

by Miss Teen Bristol, Imogen Chapman, who is sponsored by Cleeve Wood Road shops for her entry into this year's Miss Teen Great Britain competition.

This year the event will be supporting Jessie May, a children’s hospice charity, as well as Heart Animal Rescue. The event also helps raise funds which are used to support causes in the local area

Previous Christmas events at Cleeve Wood Road shops have proved a popular attraction, with crowds flocking from Downend and further afield throughout the year.

The event is free to attend, although there are fees for stalls and attractions.

"Last year’s event raised over £1,400 for local causes and this year we’re hoping to better that.

We’ve put in a lot of work to make sure this year is the biggest

yet," said Adam Jones from West 70 Photography, one of the organisers.

Michelle Cipolla, of Cleeve Wood Pharmacy, another of the event’s organisers, said: "We’re grateful to those businesses in Cleeve Wood Road shops who

have supported us financially for the event as well as the local companies who have donated raffle prizes."

The event is hosted and planned throughout the year by the Cleeve Wood Road Shops Regeneration Group committee.

n PARKRUN As parkrun, which holds friendly, free 5k weekly events including one in Mangotsfield, passes a milestone, writer Siân Harris gathers stories from fellow parkrunners on why they run THE weather was damp and and the hour was early but the car park was full and the atmosphere buoyant. It was the usual Saturday morning Pomphrey Hill parkrun.

I say ‘usual’ but every parkrun has something that makes it special to somebody.

It might be the first time running 5k, a personal best or a run after an injury or illness. Today was the 13th birthday of parkrun so there were memories to share.

For Danny Smith, it was also a milestone run - his 100th - which means he got a free T-shirt. And, as often happens for milestone runs, there was a dressing-up theme for Danny and friends. Running plays a special part in Danny’s life so he encouraged us each to help him celebrate by wearing the running top that meant the most to us.

I was volunteering this morning as a marshal (another great aspect of parkrun) but I donned the T-shirt from my first half marathon (Oxford 2015, very slow but emotional and amazing) and asked others what they had chosen to wear and why.

Some, like me, chose their first race at a particular distance, for example Andy, who chose his Stroud half marathon top from 2015 because it was his first race.

Lucy also chose to remember a half marathon: "The running top I’m wearing is from the Great North Run. It was my first half marathon. I started with a couch to 5k course.

I never really thought I’d keep running or that I’d actually do a half marathon - and neither did any of my family - so I guess it’s the top I’m proudest of."

Sandra chose her Bath half marathon top for similar reasons: "It was a fantastic sense of achievement and it was hard."

Others chose parkrun tops. Sally, who runs regularly with Sandra, was wearing her 50th parkrun top. "That was a real achievement because we started at the beginning of January two years before and we never thought we’d get to 50. And now we are about five away from our 100 - so the next favourite will be the 100 T-shirt I expect."

Mandy chose her 50th parkrun top too: "My favourite running top is my parkrun 50 top, which arrived two days ago. It shows my running journey from my first parkrun when I could hardly get round, to when I was at my peak and achieving my PB, to now when I had to finish my 50th run after suffering pneumonia so it feels like I’ve done full circle."

Others picked their running club tops.

Anna explained: "I chose to wear my Emersons Green Running Club top because before I joined the club I used to run pretty much on my own and now it’s lovely to be part of a club and run with friends and meet new friends."

Running 5k 'up Pomphrey' will give you a lift - you can put your shirt on it Running Club top means a lot to me. I joined on the spur of the moment and I’ve met the most supportive, encouraging, mad group of people - friends now - that I could wish to meet."

"I started running when I did Race for Life in about 2007 when my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer," said Helen.

"I didn’t think I’d be able to run 5k and then the next year I signed up for the 10k and it’s gone from there. Today I’ve got my Bristol half marathon T-shirt on from a few years ago. I put it on today because it was one of those races where the night before I just didn’t think I was going to be able to do it and it was a horrible day but I got to the finish line and it makes me proud."

Gary chose the Doynton Hard Half Ton up for Danny

Marathon (a tough, off-road run held in January and organised by Emersons Green Running Club) because it was his favourite race. "I’ve not done many races; I just enjoy running in the countryside," he said.

Laura chose her 'pink Emersons Green versus the Monster Race 2014' T-shirt. "It’s special to me because we made some really good friendships on the journey. Prior to that I was wearing my long-sleeved Weston Christmas Cracker 2013 top because that was my first ever 10k," she said.

Angus chose his Green Man (an ultramarathon around the outskirts of Bristol) top: "I just so loved the idea of bring able to run all the way round Bristol without hardly being on roads. I knew I was going to be very slow. So I took a year to learn all the byways off by heart so I wouldn’t get lost and lose

time. It was such an achievement to run considering I’d only then been running three years before and was still a plodder."

Steven was wearing his apricot Pomphrey Hill parkrun T-shirt "because I love parkrun".

However, he had also brought with him his Loch Ness marathon T-shirt because that was the first marathon that he did with his now fiancée (and soon-to-be-wife) Anne.

For Rich, the top he chose was for the mental health charity Mind. "It reminds me of the year that I ran every day raising money for Mind." In his work with university students, Rich sees how serious an issue mental health is. All the people I spoke to mentioned ways that running improves how they feel. For some, it was the chance to get away and have a bit of headspace.

Ian said, "I run to get away from everything, to escape, with no screens," while Mandy said, "I run to keep myself earthed."

Another person mentioned how running provides some 'me time' to help them deal with the extra challenges of parenting a child with special needs.

Sally agreed: "Because my husband works on a Saturday morning, if I did nothing I probably wouldn’t talk to anyone until maybe three in the afternoon. Coming here, we have lovely friends and we’ve made lots of lovely friends — so it sets you up for the day."

There are, of course, physical as well as emotional benefits. People talked to me about keeping fit, losing weight, recovering from illness and setting challenges. Or, as Sally put it, "We run so we can eat lots of cake".

And some just simply said they run because they enjoy it. Ian probably summed up the feelings of many when he said, "I don’t really have a favourite running top but my favourite run is my next one."

It was quite emotional hearing how running, our local running clubs and parkrun mean so much to people for so many reasons.

And, interestingly, not one person mentioned competition with anyone but themselves.

So, as this theme was Danny’s idea, which top did he choose to wear? The answer was all of them. He wore all the running tops that he has gained at runs - 21 tops in total. He then removed them one by one as he went around the 5km course until he finished with his apricot-coloured parkrun top.

"Since starting parkrun I’ve done so many incredible things I thought I’d make it a celebration of everything I’ve done running. I took off all the T-shirts in chronological order so I’d be left at the end with the one that means the most to me, my Pomphrey Hill parkrun top."

n PETER'S VISION

Red or green - or is it yellow?

NOW those of you who visit an Opticians regularly may remember that sometimes (and not always!) we ask you to compare black circles on a red and green background.

This test has a couple of uses, but it can be a bit trickier for some patients than others so tends to be one of a couple of similar tests used to fine tune your glasses prescription.

The main use we have for colour these days are both in our amazing glasses collections (you may know of our love for Italian designed Vanni frames - which are truly stunning!) and also for youngsters who are experiencing reading difficulties.

I have talked about our frames many times, to see these for yourself just call in to our practices.

For the colour testing for those with reading or learning difficulties I have more to say.

I remember in my local school (yes, yes, it was several years ago, but my memory remains intact) two class mates had tinted glasses

- coincidentally both shades of blue. Dad prescribed these to help my classmates read more easily.

How you may ask? Well back then it was a manual test consisting of comparing transparent coloured sheets called overlays and seeing which the patient chose and could read better with.

These days we have a touch more sophistication to our testing for colour preference. We use an automated program which has an enormous range of colours our patients can choose from, we measure their reading speed, symptoms and impression of black print on a white background then following the precise colour lens testing we repeat these tests.

Those in whom we measure an improvement who also notice the improvement themselves we offer a colour lens trial.

There is an interesting statistic, that of those who find a colour beneficial, around 90% have an underlying problem of visual stress.

This led us to look in more detail.

Our latest aid here is an IR tracking system, used as part of our Optometric Vision Therapy assessment. The eye tracking system assesses how we read in much finer detail than possible with human observation only, it charts reading performance and guides treatment options.

The improvements can be quite astounding, and have over recent months really helped many who were reluctant readers become in several cases enthusiastic readers!

Swimming pool reopens YATE swimming pool has reopened after a ÂŁ1.4million major refurbishment.

The leisure centre is holding a free open day on Saturday November 4, where the public can look round and try out the refurbished facilities.

The seven-month project saw the pool closed for maintenance and refurbishment, which included replacing the pipework and installing environmentally friendly new equipment.

When the swimming pools were taken out of action back in April, a temporary popular throughout the summer season. This will be dismantled over the coming weeks.

A large-scale project is still under way at Longwell Green leisure centre. This will bring a new fitness studio, an overhauled gym and a new lobby. Work is expected to be completed later this year.

n CRAFT COLUMN

Cute Travel Tissue Holder WITH the weather turning colder and the inevitable sniffles on the way, why not create a cute travel tissue holder for those tissues, to keep in your bag or pop in school bags - you could even create one for each of the family!

You will need: 1 piece of outer fabric measuring 5.5 inches x 6.5 inches 1 piece of lining fabric measuring 5.5 inches x 7.5 inches Sewing thread

1. Take both pieces of fabric and, with right sides together, match together and pin each side measuring 5.5 inches. Sew in place.

You will notice that the lining fabric is longer and therefore doesn’t sit flat against the outer fabric. Don’t worry this is correct!

2. Turn the piece right side out and press flat, ensuring that there is equal amounts of lining fabric visible at each side.

3. Now turn the piece over and fold the piece in half, marking with pins where the crease line is. Fold each side into the centre crease and pin in place.

4. Sew along the top and bottom of the piece, ensuring you remove the pins as you go. Tidy up thread ends and, if preferred, use pinking shears to neaten the raw edges of the fabric.

5. Now turn right side out, pushing each corner out with a knitting needle or other similar object.

6. Press for a final time. You are now ready to take the plastic wrapper off your travel tissues and pop them into your handy travel tissue cover!

The girls are back in town EIGHTIES girl group Bananarama - Keren Woodward, Sara Dallin and Siobhan Fahey - have reunited for a national tour this month.

Keren and Sara met at Bromley Heath Infant School when they were four and went on to the junior school and then to what is now Mangotsfield School. They met Irish singer Siobhan in 1979 and released the band’s first single Venus in 1981.

Martial arts maestros scoop the medals

Testing times for Mangos MANGOTSFIELD United are appealing for locals to give their support as they try to end a terrible run of form.

As Downend Voice went to print, the team had managed to stop the rot after losing six games in a row, including early exits from the FA Trophy and the Gloucestershire Senior Cup. They beat Larkhall Athletic 3-1 at home on October 21 but remain close to the bottom of the league.

New manager Wayne Thorne has made a considerable number of changes to the playing squad he inherited and it is hoped that results will improve once the new players settle in.

Thorne wants Cossham Street to become a fortress - so members of local scout groups are being invited to attend a match for free on November 14 in an effort to swell the crowd.

A TEAM of four members from the Elite Gym in Staple Hill took part in the Southern Area Championships in Southampton against more than 300 other competitors, writes Andrew Davies.

Ray Godfrey from our Kickin' Cubs Classes did extremely well against a more experienced opponent and took his bout to extra time where he lost by a single point in a sudden death extension, just missing out on a medal position.

International competitor Dean Turner, 16, had to settle for Bronze after a very exciting and technical bout against an equally experienced competitor who went on to win the division with some well-executed head kicks.

Milly Mancey was on form yet again overcoming other

competitors in the elimination rounds with consummate ease ,also taking an early lead in the final where her opponent eventually fought back to win Gold and Milly taking Silver.

For Maddy Morgan from our kickboxing section, this was his first competition and made sure it wouldn't be his last. He overcame his opponents in the elimination rounds to reach the final where a smaller and more experienced opponent began to take a convincing lead. However, Maddy in the last round took the fight to his opponent and won on a TKO with the other competitor throwing in the towel.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Raising a glass (or three) of rosé Blog 45 – French wine and tennis elbow TO start I would like to thank Mike for writing last month’s blog whilst I was busy taking the family on holiday to the south of France. It was a cracking two weeks planted in the middle of a rosé vineyard country with my whole family. It’s the first time that my Mum, Dad, Brother and all associated family members have been on holiday together in years.

We stayed in a villa on a campsite and we had all the perfect ingredients for a lovely family holiday. The weather was nice, the travel was smooth, the kids were well behaved (so were the grandparents!) the food was top notch and the wine was even better. The local vineyard was selling 10L of some decent rosé for 23 euros, in English money that’s about £1.50 per bottle. Not that I condone too much drinking of course but when in Rome…

We have now said farewell and thankyou to our chiropractors Iain and Hannah Crombie, who been working at Cleve Chiropractic.

They are off on the next phase of their journey to live and work nearer their family in Exeter. I first met Iain treating him at Colston’s School back when he was 16, guided him into Chiropractic and then gave him a job when he left university. Shortly afterwards his girlfriend (now wife!) joined us to form a strong team that lasted for five years.

Now that they have left I am pleased to say that our two new chiropractic associates Michael

Jordan and Jack Withey have settled in nicely. I am very proud to say that both Mike and Jack are locals and I helped them on their journey into Chiropractic university. They are now offering their world class help and latest techniques to Mangotsfield and the surrounding areas including Downend, Emersons Green, Lyde Green and the wider community.

Since my return I have been using the shockwave machine to great effect. Last month Mike talked about how fantastic it is for Plantar Fasciitis (pain under the sole of the foot) and Achilles Tendonitis. Since then I have also been trying out its research proven benefits for tennis elbow.

Conveniently I have had a number of patients willing to offer up their elbows for my experience. The results, as before with shockwave, have been wondrous.

Tennis elbow is a notoriously difficult condition to treat, with some poor NHS treatment options like injections and surgery.

Chiropractic and physiotherapy have been proven to work but often take time. Conversely with shockwave, I have had almost unbelievable results in one treatment. Patients have reported to me that their symptoms have reduced by 80-90 per cent after just their first treatment.

The research shows that full benefit would come from three to five treatments with shockwave, although at Cleve Chiropractic we believe, where possible, in getting patients better fast so the fewer treatments you need the better!

free. It is often an achy treatment but it lasts only three min and 20 seconds for the 2000 shocks normally required, allowing time for extra conventional treatment and advice to be given. If you asked me to put up with three minutes of mild to moderate ache to alleviate my frequent or even constant pain then I, and most of my patients, definitely would.

What a wonderful machine shockwave is proving to be. I look forward to telling you more as we build up our experience using the gold standard device on various conditions. For now we are offering shockwave for free as part of a first treatment or initial consultation (£35 – associate, £38 – me!) if appropriate and then for just £50 per time afterwards if needed, including any normal treatment that time will allow for.
