New bid for secondary school in Lyde Green A NEW move is being made to get a secondary school for Lyde Green - but the provision of a second primary school seems to have been set back.

SGS Academy Trust, whose bid for an all-through school for children aged four to 16 was turned down by the Department for Education earlier this year, is now seeking to open a secondary school.

The trust intends to put in a bid under the Government’s free school scheme in early November and if successful will open the school, to be named SGS Parkfield, on a six-hectare site at the north of Lyde Green, close to the former Parkfield colliery site.

SGS, which runs three secondary schools, is proposing to open a five-form entry school, which would increase over four years to take a maximum 900 students. It says the school would have a digital and engineering specialism and would be designed as ‘autism friendly’ so that students with the condition Turn to Page 2

Kevin Hamblin, executive principal at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, which sponsors SGS Academy Trust, told the Voice that last year’s bid had been unsuccessful because South Gloucestershire was less of a priority that some other local authorities but that the criteria had changed for this year’s applications, which are known as Wave 14.

He said: “The new bid will respond to feedback by the Department of Education, who felt the primary phase of the previous bid was not required at present. The proposed new school will therefore be for an 11-16 school which will have a digital and engineering technology focus, alongside the core GCSE subjects.”

However, this change of approach does not yet appear to have reached South Gloucestershire Council .

A spokesman told the Voice: “We are seeking to commission the provision for primary and secondary pupils at Lyde Green through the Department for Education’s (DfE) Wave 14 Free Schools Programme.

“We require new school provision at Lyde Green to meet the need for school places generated by new house building development in the area.

Improving school standards is

the council’s number one priority and delivering new school facilities for our children and young people will help us to do that.

“SGS Academy Trust has launched a consultation on a new proposal to establish a school with provision for primary and secondary pupils at Lyde Green and the DfE will assess the application.”

SGS is carrying out a consultation in advance of its application next month and was due to hold a community meeting at the science park on September 30 at 7.30pm, to give parents, residents and the council the chance to raise this and other questions.

Town councillor Matt Palmer told the Voice that people living in Lyde Green, which was always due to have two primaries and a secondary school, had many questions about the provision of school places.

“Lyde Green is desperate for another primary school and a secondary school and the completion date of September 2022 is far too late. South Gloucestershire Council and the government has let down the children of Lyde Green forcing some pupils and parents to travel long distances for an education.”

He said the council’s own forecasts showed that Winterbourne, Downend, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green would need 99 extra secondary places in 2020, 126 in 2021 and 156 by 2022.

Staff back community’s campaign to keep Emersons Green resource base STAFF at Emersons Green Primary School have backed a community campaign against the possible closure of its resource base, which enables disabled children to learn alongside mainstream pupils.

In a statement, National Education Union members said the school was “proud to be considered a beacon of inclusive practice” and thanked the parents aiming to ensure that provision for children with visual impairments and physical disabilities developed over 20 years was not lost.

It said: “All pupils who attend the school benefit from inclusion.

They enjoy learning with, and developing friendships with pupils of all abilities and learn to appreciate that we all have different strengths.

“The school provides so much more than is available in a typical mainstream school.

It is a unique and valuable provision for children with visual impairments, wheelchair users, braille users, communication aid users, Makaton users and cane users.

“Specialist support is given for pupils’ wide-ranging needs: speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, mobility, tube feeding, oxygen, self-care and independence, manual handling, social and emotional needs and the fundamental need to develop

Parents and children turned out in force for the first protest in July. They were expected to do the same on September 30, gathering at Emersons Green to march to Blackhorse for a meeting with the council independence. These needs are met through the skills and expertise of school staff working with a variety of therapists who are able to support a number of pupils in a single visit. The provision is both exemplary and cost-effective.

“The school has been visited by educators from around the world and is proud to be considered a

beacon of inclusive practice.”

South Gloucestershire Council is considering “phasing out” the 12-place resource base once all children currently attending have moved on to secondary school.

It is part of a review of special educational needs and disabilities provision, which will bring an overall increase in places. The authority, which says

the Emersons Green base has a high cost per pupil, will hold a consultation next month and make a decision early next year.

Supporters are continuing their campaign.

More than 6,000 have signed a petition and a march is due on September 30. More information can be found on their Facebook page.

Traffic: it’s time for joined-up thinking A BAN on some turns at the Hambrook traffic lights has almost halved journey times for drivers on the Avon Ring Road, according to South Gloucestershire Council.

But the restrictions are making school buses late and increasing congestion and pollution in Frenchay, say parish councillors.

Bans on traffic from Frenchay and Bromley Heath accessing the B4058 Bristol Road towards Winterbourne at the junction were introduced in August, in a bid to cut the amount of toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from stationary traffic. South Gloucestershire Council was ordered to take action by the government as pollution levels were above legal limits.

The council has been monitoring journey times around the lights as an indication of the likelihood of NO2 reductions.

A spokesman said: "Initial results indicate we are almost halving morning peak journey times between Wick Wick and the M32 compared to this time last year, however it is too early to draw firm conclusions.”

Winterbourne parish councillors Adrian Collins, Paul Kembery, Charlie Watkins and Hugh Whatley said pollution and congestion was worse.

The return of school traffic had been compounded by road works at Abbey Wood.

They said: "The whole point of the temporary traffic measure is to reduce CO2/NOx emissions and this is making matters worse. These pressure points really need joined-up thinking to try and help the situation long term – the junction from Frenchay needs a redesign and yellow hatched areas implemented to help keep traffic flowing."

Invitation to tea

A FUNDRAISING tea is planned to support a project to renew Mangotsfield’s St James Church, which is undergoing a transformation ahead of its 800th anniversary next year.

The church on the corner of St James Street and Cossham Street is set to get new flooring, chairs, disabled access, toilets and a host of other improvements.

Church committee members have organised an afternoon tea event in St James Church Hall, in Richmond Road, to help raise funds towards the estimated

£500,000 cost of the project.

Supporters have already donated crockery for the tea event and now people are being invited to come along on October 12 between 2pm and 5pm to enjoy sandwiches, cakes, scones, jam and clotted cream.

There will also be a tombola, raffle, craft stall and book sale.

Tickets cost £8 each or two for £15, with £4 tickets for children aged between 4 and 10 and under-3s free.

Charity quizzes ‘are a way to give back’ A MUM in Lyde Green has launched a project to raise funds for charities after her family were supported by a local church.

Katie Rakoczi lives in the development with her two daughters. For her project, called Quizzing for Causes, she produces a monthly quiz sheet that people can pay a £1 for, or make a donation. There’s a child’s quiz and adult quiz available, with questions on topics such as general knowledge, ding bats and word puzzles, nursery rhymes and logos for kids to colour in. After they have completed it and returned it to Katie (either directly or via Coffee at Lyde in Lyde Green Community Centre), they will be entered into the monthly prize draw, where they could win a £10 cash prize for the adult quiz and a goodie bag for a children’s quiz.

Initially Katie chose to support St James Church in Mangotsfield and their Create800 project for building renovations, and she raised £110 the first month and £160 the second. For October she has also written a quiz in aid of Lee’s Lasting Legacy, the charity launched by the family of eight-yearold Lee Belgium, who died in April.

Katie said: “I took my kids to a messy church session at St James and everyone there was so lovely and friendly. After learning that they were fundraising to rebuild

parts of the church, I decided I wanted to give something back. It started off as my way of saying thank you for the support that they had given to me and the girls, and I also wanted to do something that would get kids off their screens, bring people together and help everyone escape the stresses of everyday life too.

questions and picking out prizes too. After the success of the first few quiz sheets I decided I wanted to keep it going for other local causes. The idea is that anyone from a small charity that needs a bit of a cash injection can come forward, and all of the takings from the quiz will go directly to them.

At the moment I am driving round to drop off paper copies of the quiz or emailing it to people, with donations being received via PayPal, but I am hoping to make this process simpler as the quizzes get bigger.

“The nicest part of it has been when people have messaged back to tell me about the fun they had, and a man from the church group also told me he enjoyed doing it to keep busy. For me it’s not just about raising money, it’s also something to give a bit of escapism too!”

Katie told the Voice she has been invited to pitch at Downend Soup in November, and she hopes to receive some support to help grow her quizzes using technology such as an app. In addition, she is also looking for businesses to offer quiz prizes, and shops or cafes that would be happy to act as a collection and drop-off point for quiz sheets.

A VILLAGE drama group is offering local people the chance to take up roles both on and off the stage.

Pucklechurch Players was formed in 1982 and some of its members have been performers from the start so the group is in need of some younger blood!

The drama group meets in the community centre on Thursday evenings to read play scripts or rehearse and puts on two performances a year, in May/June and in November/December.

In alternate years the winter performance is a pantomime and preparations normally begin in August.

If you think you would like to be involved with the construction of the stage, set building or any of the other aspects of a production (makeup, costumes, props, prompting, publicity, sound or lighting), please get in touch via their Facebook page or go along to a weekly meeting at 8.15pm in the Pucklechurch Community Association meeting room.

Drive-thru and hotel 'not needed' NEIGHBOURS of a planned new hotel, pub and drive-thru coffee shop say the area already has enough of them.

South Gloucestershire Council has until the middle of October to make a decision on developer Hinton Group's plans for land next to the Harlequin Office Park, off Folly Brook Road.

The developer says the Travelodge, Costa Coffee and a Greene King pub and restaurant would create up to 100 new jobs on land which has had no "viable or credible interest" for its original intended use as a site for offices.

The hotel would have 90 bedrooms, 30 staff and 95 parking spaces, the Greene King pub restaurant would have around 60 staff and 80 parking spaces, while the Costa Coffee drive-thru would employ an estimated 11 workers and have 32 parking spaces.

The site is close to the Wick Wick roundabout, where the Avon Ring Road meets Badminton Road, between the M4 and the Willy Wicket pub.

Concerns over the plans have been raised by people living nearby, who have written to the council to say that streets such as Westons Brake are already used as overflow parking by workers at the nearby Emerald

Nearby resident Lindsay Godsell raised concerns over extra noise and air pollution and said the area did not need any more hotels or coffee shops.

In her statement to the council she said: "The proposal would not create more jobs. It would simply add to competition of businesses already established in the area, and existing jobs could be compromised."

Neighbour Nigel Dilling said the proposed parking for the businesses was not enough.

He said:"The surrounding business park is already cramped and overcrowded for parking, often causing overspill into the neighbouring residential areas. The addition of a hotel, pub and shop will potentially only add to the issue."

He said there was already a Premier Inn and Beefeater restaurant plus two pubs, The Folly and The Willy Wicket, all within a mile of the proposed development.

Cheryl Cooper said: "I'm deeply concerned for not only the knock-on effect on neighbouring streets but also the added pollution the ring road already suffers."

Emersons Green Town Council said that members had "serious concerns" over the impact of the venture on existing businesses nearby. They also asked for "bee corridors" and other landscaping to maintain biodiversity in the area.

Hinton Group says the development "would provide major benefits for the local economy through job creation, economic development and bringing a vacant site into beneficial use".

Join the How would you spend £1.1m clean-up on improving railway path?

A CLEAN-UP is being planned at Mangotsfield Railway Station, one of the most popular points of the Bristol and Bath Railway Path.

People are being invited to help clear litter from on October 20, 10am-12.30pm.

The community event has been organised by the Plastic Free Shop in conjunction with environment group Surfers Against Sewage's #SummitToSea series.

The organisers said: "From bottles of pop being thrown behind a low wall, to energy gel packets being dropped by cyclists and runners, this beautiful area really gets hammered by litter."

Anyone interested can leave a message on the events section of the Plastic Free Shop Facebook page.

PEOPLE are being urged to say how they think £1.1 million should be spent to improve the Bristol and Bath Railway Path.

Anyone who walks, jogs or cycles on the path, which runs through Mangotsfield and Staple Hill, is being invited to help decide the best way of using the money to make it easier to use, reducing the problems caused by sharing it.

Charity Sustrans, which has been given funding from the Department for Transport, also wants to hear from people who want to use the path but are currently put off, to find out what would make it accessible.

The consultation comes as the path prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary with an event in Staple Hill this month.

Sustrans' James Cleeton said the improvements would

be a 'community-led redesign', focusing on the busiest stretch of the path between Fishponds and Whitehall, used by 1,000 people per hour in the morning and evening rush.

A survey of 1,500 path users found the five most popular suggestions for improving the path were to widen it, segregate walkers and cyclists, improve signage and lighting and to install calming measures to slow speeding cyclists at certain points.

But James said it was up to people who used the path to make choices about how the path should change.

He said: "We're at the point where we can't do nothing."

Sustrans is planning a series of workshops for people to share ideas on the best way to improve the path, starting with a

meeting on Friday October 18 at Easton Community Centre in Kilburn Street. People can drop in between 4pm and 9pm, and there will be a presentation at 7pm.

James is encouraging all users of the path to come along to the meeting.

He said: "It means so much to so many people – it's up to all of us to come up with the answers."

People can also get involved with the project via the Bristol & Bath Railway Path – OnePath group on Facebook.

The path's 40th anniversary will be marked with a choral performance at the Staple Hill tunnel from 2-3pm on October 5.

Nathan takes gold at World Transplant Games EMERSONS Green resident Nathan Rogers has struck gold at the World Transplant Games this summer.

Nathan, 46, was selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in golf following his success at the British Transplant Games in Birmingham last year.

He had a stem cell transplant in 2016 to treat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells.

Just three years on, the Bristol City fan is full of life, honing his skills regularly at Kendleshire Golf Club where he plays with a handicap of 3.

The World Transplant Games welcomed competitors, aged six to 84, from 59 countries at various venues across Newcastle Gateshead, with golf played at the prestigious Close House.

The week-long event started with the teams parading through the streets of Newcastle cheered on by huge crowds who were visibly moved by the inspirational athletes, every one of them having survived a life-saving transplant.

Nathan’s wife Fiona joined the team of GB and NI supporters, all of whom had seen first-hand how far their loved ones had progressed since their life-saving surgery.

On the third anniversary of his transplant, Nathan won the silver medal in the singles scratch golf competition and, two days later, went on to win gold in the pairs golf with his partner Dan, a kidney recipient from Derby.

competed in the British Transplant Games in Newport as a member of Team Anthony Nolan, representing the organisation who successfully led the search to match him with a donor. He scooped bronze in the singles scratch golf at the Celtic Manor Resort.

Nathan’s transplant and care was provided by Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre under the leadership of Professor David Marks.

Looking ahead, Nathan will represent Team Anthony Nolan at the British Transplant Games 2020 in Coventry and will continue to champion the benefits of transplantation.

Nathan, a manufacturing engineer, said: “The whole week was an amazing experience.

You are non-stop for most of the week and when you stop you feel quite exhausted. The buzz you get from everyone there, athletes/ donors and supporters just celebrating life is really incredible.

“I am so grateful to my wife Fiona, my transplant team at BHOC and most of all my donor who without her selflessness there would be no medals.”

Can you help GWAAC? GREAT Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) is looking for people to volunteer with its fundraising team.

The charity provides the air ambulance and critical care services for 2.1 million people across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire and South Glos.

Its life-saving service relies on a team of volunteer ground crew to stay flying, from manning a stall at events, to servicing collection tins across the region or giving talks about the charity to community groups.

Volunteer coordinator Claire Harmer said: “Here at GWAAC, we’re very lucky to have a dedicated and passionate team of volunteers who donate their time and energy to help us raise vital funds and spread the word about the work which we do. It’s a great way to meet people and learn new skills whilst making a real difference. As a charity, we need to raise £3 million a year to provide our service. We receive no day-to-day funding from the Government or National Lottery, and now we need more people to join our amazing ground crew.”

GWAAC Volunteer, Julia, says: “I enjoy volunteering for GWAAC because there are always plenty of worthwhile things to do to help out and the staff are friendly and welcoming! Seeing the blue and green helicopter flying over my house on its way to or from a mission makes me feel part of something really special.”

Delight for NBT THE NHS trust which runs Southmead and Cossham hospitals has been given a good rating by the care watchdog – for the first time since it moved into its new buildings five years ago.

North Bristol NHS Trust was previously rated as requiring improvement by the Care Quality Commission.

A team of inspectors from the CQC visited the trust during June and July to check the quality of five core services: urgent and emergency services, medical care (including older people’s care), surgery, maternity and end of life care. CQC also looked specifically at management and leadership.

The CQC said the trust was now rated as 'outstanding' for care and leadership, and 'good' for safety and effectiveness. It still requires improvement for responsiveness.

n NEWS A YOUNG offenders unit is making changes after being told it must improve by inspectors.

Vinney Green Secure Unit, in Emersons Green, provides care and education for up to 24 young offenders, aged between 10 and 18, and a report last year described residents as “amongst the most troubled and troublesome in the country”.

Education watchdog Ofsted visited Vinney Green in June and has told South Gloucestershire Council, which runs the unit, that it “requires improvement”.

Inspectors said management and leadership at the unit, where 144 assaults took place last year, was inadequate.

The report reserved its harshest criticism for Vinney Green’s management, describing it as inadequate.

The facility was criticised for its “high” use of restraint, locking children in their rooms “without good reason”, leaving some children to sleep on plastic mattresses, and rooms that were defaced with graffiti and toothpaste.

The report concluded: “The

However, there are no serious or widespread failures that result in their welfare not being safeguarded or promoted.”

Manager Alison Sykes told a council scrutiny commission on September 18 that the unit had begun making changes and was already seeing improvements.

She said the facility had faced numerous challenges in the past year, not least of which had been a heavily depleted senior management team.

Staff sickness, trouble

recruiting staff, “not enough communal space” and the rising complexity of the needs of their “volatile” young residents had only compounded the difficulty of providing the £6 million-ayear service, Ms Sykes said.

Ofsted inspections had become noticeably “harder” and “more critical” since the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, she added, with ‘requires improvement’ ratings

now “more commonplace rather than unusual”.

Building work is currently under way at the unit, off Emersons Green Lane.

A council spokesperson said: “We are undertaking an ongoing programme of work to upgrade and improve the ageing infrastructure at Vinney Green, which is funded by grants from the Department for Education.

The work includes improvements to the dedicated educational and communal facilities for our residents as well as redecorating the bathroom facilities.

"The work will take place over the next couple of years, as it is important to note that the service will still be running throughout and we need to be mindful to minimise disruption to lives, education and care provided to the young people who live there.”

Tower Playgroup given Good rating A PRE-SCHOOL in Pucklechurch is delighted to have received a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating following its first inspection in three years.

Tower Pre-School is based at St Thomas A Becket church.

They were visited by an Ofsted inspector on July 9, following their last inspection in 2016 when they were also previously rated as Good.

The pre-school is managed

by Pre-School Leader Katherine Robbins, who has worked there for 13 years. It is run by a committee of parents, and children aged from two and a half can enjoy activities such as crafts and painting until they are ready to go to school. The preschool also encourages them to explore maths and they also visit Pucklechurch Primary School once a week to help with their school transition.

Katherine said: “The inspector said that we know our children and their families really well, and praised the fact that we take part in community and local events and that our children are happy and motivated to learn too. They also said that the children take pride in their achievements, and their feedback overall was really lovely.

“Although the inspection was a bit stressful, it was really nice to receive those comments and it made us feel really happy. As we’re based in the church we have a limited outdoor area, so to get a good report is really nice.

Our parents are really pleased too and have said we deserve it because we work so hard.”

Village hall to become Big Top EMERSONS Green Village Hall is set to take part in a city-wide circus festival.

Circus City - the UK’s biggest festival of contemporary circus returns to Bristol from October 17 to November 2 with a programme for all ages combining music, film, dance, and spoken word with an array of international circus skills.

Scouts in appeal for leaders A SCOUT group in Staple Hill urgently needs more adult volunteers to help keep it running.

Around 60 children attend the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections of the 74th Kingswood Scout Group, which meets at Staple Hill Methodist Church every Friday evening.

But the healthy membership means the group's existing leaders are in need of help.

Group Scout Leader Katie Cox said: “We need people to help with the planning and to be additional leaders in the groups.

"We are also looking for people who could provide back up and overall support. They don't need to be available every Friday, even two or three times a month would be a big help.

“We are a friendly group and can help to provide the necessary training and support for anyone that is interested.”

n CHARITY FOOTBALL FOOTBALL fans who turned out to help raise more than £17,000 for charity were treated to a spectacular goal from a Bristol Rovers legend.

A crowd of 1,500 were at Mangotsfield United's Cossham Street ground on September 1 to see 23 ex-Rovers professionals take on a scratch fans' team in the Martin Belsten Memorial Match.

The professionals' class showed in the match, which they won 4-0, with the highlight a 45yard goal from former England international Rickie Lambert, who lobbed the fans' keeper from close to the halfway line.

More importantly, the match raised a total of £17,138 for the British Heart Foundation.

It was the third annual game organised by fan Ash Belsten, from Kingswood, in memory of his grandad Martin, who took him to his first Rovers match.

Martin died in 2016.

£1,500 for Paul’s Place A FOOTBALL team led by ex-Bristol City star Louis Carey was the star attraction at a charity event in Mangotsfield which raised more than £1,500 for charity.

The football and music fundraising day at Pomphrey Hill pavilion was organised by Daz's Rock 4 Charity, a fundraising organisation run

by Bristolian musician Darren Sims. It was supported by staff from Sainsbury’s Emersons Green.

It raised £1,516.95 for Paul's Place, which supports adults with any physical, sensory and cognitive impairment and runs a day facility in Serridge Lane, Coalpit Heath. Carey is a patron of the charity, which was represented by former chair Clair Armstrong.

n MANGOTSFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

We're a lot busier than we look ...

ON the surface, it’s been relatively quiet over the last month or so. On the surface, that is.

Some good news. A few months ago we started quietly fundraising in the hope that we could bring our plans for a Christmas Nativity in the Dame School and some Christmas lights in the village to fruition.

Well, thanks to some excellent work applying for and obtaining grants, and the generosity of the local community, we are nearly there, nearly there to the extent that we are confident enough to start ordering things.

We’d still like to raise more, so if anyone would like to make a donation you can do it

During our last “Hour A Month” (HAM) we delivered leaflets publicising our work and our attempts to create the Nativity. For future HAMs? Well, there must be lots of things that need doing around the area, things that can be done by a team of volunteers in a relatively short time and at low cost. We need ideas please – the more, the better – and volunteers – the more, the merrier.

We have heard back from Taylor Wimpey and we should soon start to see some improvements to the fence around the field between Mangotsfield School and Cossham Street.

Our fortnightly Coffee and Cakes at the Red Lion is going well but we’d love to see more people there. It’s every other Wednesday in the Red Lion lounge from 10am. The next one is on October 9.

On Sunday September 29 at 2pm there is a Harvest Festival, again in the Red Lion. It is in support of the Staple Hill Community Hub, who feed and support many in Staple Hill and Mangotsfield. Donations of non-perishable food and drink are welcome on the day or beforehand. There will be a short, traditional,

service and blessing followed by a disco.

There are a number of different sources for funding for community projects. A number of local groups, us included, have already benefited from them. The registration and application process can seem a bit daunting so South Glos council and their partners are running a number of sessions at their offices in Yate to give advice and guidance.

The next one is on Monday October 7, from 12.30 to 3.30pm.

AS a long-time campaigner for the M4 Link, I organised with my fellow South Gloucestershire MPs to lobby the new Transport Secretary to support the need for the new M4 junction 18a at Emersons Green.

Working with my neighbouring MP colleagues and West of England Mayor Tim Bowles, I met with the new Transport Secretary Grant Shapps MP and Roads Minister Baroness Vere to lobby for funding to progress the next stage of technical work for the new motorway junction. We received encouraging feedback from them on the benefits of the scheme and how the next stage of technical work can be progressed.

This work would follow on from the initial government funding I helped secure for a feasibility study, which eventually recommended the ‘western option’ for the new junction, next to the Bristol and Bath Science Park. I had campaigned hard against the so-called ‘eastern

option’, which would have carved through our local Green Belt countryside.

The feasibility study also indicated various benefits of the new £428 million junction, such as: • Relieving congestion on M4 J19 and M32, J1 and on the A4174 corridor • Improving safety by reducing queuing on the M4 at junction 19, resulting in less collisions • Unlocking the economic potential in the local area by providing good direct access between the M4 and Science Park/Emersons Green Enterprise Area • Potential to facilitate 5,700 new jobs.

• Improving network resilience and journey time reliability particularly for M4, M32 and A4174 ring road around

Hambrook; • New and improved walking and cycling routes as part of the improvements where possible Along with so many local residents, I was pleased to see that South Gloucestershire Council’s negotiations with First Bus has resulted in the 48 and 49 bus services being extended to Lyde Green and the Science Park – another new way for people to get around our local area.

I will continue to campaign for the investment needed across the range of transport modes to keep our area moving and boost our local economy.

Pucklechurch Short mat bowls has been running for 30 years at Pucklechurch Community Centre thanks to Les Whittock, now 94.

Les was presented with an inscribed shield to thank him for his three decades of service to the club. The club started with one night a week and 6 members. n PETER'S VISION

How to keep eyes healthy

I WAS reading recently about eye health. This is clearly a topic close to my heart, and hopefully as our sight is such an important sense it matters to you too. During National Eye Health Week we were reminded that around two million people in the UK live with some form of sight loss. That must count as a significant number in anyone's estimation. Perhaps more importantly, it's estimated that half of this sight loss could be avoided.

How? I’ll come to that later.

As a parent I have a keen interest in the eye health of young eyes. Around 1 million children in the UK are thought to have an undetected sight problem.

My concern is that if a child has a sight problem it can become an avoidable barrier to their development, learning and social interactions with friends & family.

A solution - book your child, and encourage all those you know to

do the same, for a free NHS sight test. We offer these six days per week, particularly Monday to Friday in our after-school children’s eyes clinics.

So, how can we avoid eye health troubles? Well the saying you are what you eat is a good reminder about healthy eating.

Dark leafy greens, bright fruits, oily fish, eggs and broccoli are all on the healthy eating list. Don’t forget grapes, blueberries, avocado and papaya too. I’m afraid there aren’t any sweet treats I can recommend although I know many of us are partial to the odd cookie or doughnut. These just don’t make it on to anyone's healthy eating list!

Although not as strong as our summer sun, it's still important to protect our eyes from the rays of the often glorious autumn sun.

In the autumn the sun is lower in the sky, so we have less natural protection from our eye brows and

need to remember our sunglasses.

It’s an easy excuse really to keep looking cool in our sunnies for another season.

One of the key health issues affecting our sight continues to be smoking. Many of the eye conditions we see are worsened by two things, age and smoking.

Although often difficult, one we can reduce, the other we definitely can’t. No matter what we try and tell our children, they always seem to know exactly just how old we are! One benefit that comes with age is that once over 60 you are

entitled to a free NHS sight test. As we do for young eyes, we offer NHS sight tests for the over 60’s six days per week.

You and your family, whether you have any sight concerns or not, are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and glasses.

HUNDREDS of people came out to enjoy the sun at a food festival at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in September.

The South Gloucestershire Food and Drink festival, which is free to enter, returned for its autumn edition on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September from 10am – 4pm. Visitors to the event had the chance to try a wide range of fantastic food and drink including churros, noodles, burritos, pizzas and chicken wings, as well as gin and prosecco cocktails and plenty of Pimms!

n CRAFT COLUMN

Pumpkin Paperweight With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s What better way to celebrate Halloween with this spooky pumpkin paperweight! Ideal to use to stop those important documents escaping, or to use simply as a table decoration or spooky prop! The best thing is that it can be brought out year after year – and be as creative as you like with variations of this design, but most of all have fun!

You will need: A plate – 20cms in diameter Piece of fabric for your pumpkin (a minimum of 20cms square) Pen Stone roughly 5cms in diameter Sewing needle Sewing thread in a colour to complement your main fabric Fabric scissors Fabric Glue Toy wadding Oddments of felt for decoration

1. Begin by drawing around your plate on the reverse side of your fabric – cut this shape out.

2. Now take your needle and thread and, starting 1cm from the edge of your circle, work a few stitches over each other to secure your thread in place, and use a running stitch to stitch around the edge of your pumpkin, ensuring you are always roughly 1cm away from the edge.

3. Once you have sewn completely around the edge of the circle, pull the thread slightly and the edges should start to gather. At this point pop a little toy wadding into the middle of the circle and place your stone on top.

4. Now pull the thread so that the circle gathers tightly at the top and at the same time keep popping your wadding into the shape, you should end up with a circular shape and the top edges should be completely gathered.

Secure the top edge by working a few stitches over each other so that the gathers remain secure.

Now knot the end of your thread and cut just above the knot.

5. Take a scrap of felt and either draw around a circular object as a template or roughly draw a circle which will be the top of the pumpkin and which will be wide enough to hide the gathers at the top of your pumpkin. Cut this out and create triangular ‘tendrils’ around the edge of the circle. Now cut out another shape in the same colour which will be the stem.

7. Now run some fabric glue on the underside of the stem and tendril shape and stick to the top of your pumpkin, hiding the gathers at the top.

8. You are now ready to embellish your pumpkin! We used black felt to create a spooky pumpkin face but you could create your own monster or even decorate with beads or sequins – the possibilities are endless! Have fun and have a spooky, fun and enjoyable Halloween!

6. Cut a small incision into the centre of your circular shape and pop your stem through.

n AROUND THE WIs BEECHMERE BELLES: EMERSONS & LYDE WI WE all laughed and had a thoroughly entertaining evening with Emma Britton at our latest meeting.

Emma is the breakfast show host for Radio Bristol and after meeting her, I’m sure there was more than one of us that retuned our radios for the next day. We heard all about how she sort of fell into broadcasting, through to the famous people she had met and interviewed – my absolute favourite being David Attenborough. It was a shame Emma had to leave us before cake and coffee, as she has an alarm call every morning at 3am, because the cakes made by our members were lovely: some of us had two slices.

Beechmere Belles have decided to start a Sunday lunch club for any member who would like to meet once a month for a relaxing dinner out, with maybe a glass or two of whatever takes your fancy. Our first one is booked at a local eatery, so nobody has to travel far.

We also have a cinema club: our choice for September was Downton Abbey, for which most of us have been holding our breath for a long time.

It’s getting to that time of year where our lovely committee have a lot of work on their hands. Planning for our AGM/ birthday meeting in October has begun. Last year’s meeting was a hoot. After the formalities of re-electing posts, we enjoyed a glass of bubbly, non-alcoholic and alcoholic, whilst fighting tooth and nail over the quiz – ladies can be ferocious if there is a prize to be won - followed by a beautiful piece of birthday cake, made and decorated by our brilliant secretary.

The evening was such a success we are planning the same for this year.

I apologise now if you get me on your team and I promise not to say “are you sure?” because you were before I asked.

Then we have our stall for the Christmas event at Emerson’s Green Village Hall to organise, and confirming all planned events and speakers for next year’s calendar – and it’s looking good, ladies. Two of our members have joined the committee and it is great to have them in board, with new ideas and plenty of enthusiasm. You don’t have to be on our committee to put forward ideas and we have had some fantastic ones from our Belles this year. Not only are the planned meetings coming along nicely but

we have plenty of ideas for trips outside of our monthly meets.

Our next meeting is another craft one; it’s great to learn new things and leave with something you have made, but best of all it’s a chance to sit around the craft tables and have a chat and laugh.

I’ve made some lovely friends since I have been a member, people I would otherwise not have met.

If you would like to become part of a WI, you are very welcome to drop in and see what it is all about. Your first meeting is just £3 and is a chance to see if it would be your thing. We meet every fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green Village Hall at 7.30pm. There is a car park at the side – ensure you enter your vehicle reg just inside the door and we are in the Cullimore Room.

We danced the night away at our September meeting with a Salsa session which was suitable for all ages and abilities, and found out that chair dancing is good!

For October, we will have a session to learn some tips on public speaking, this isn’t about standing in front of hundreds of people, it’s just about how you can remove the anxiety of this and appear confident even when you are shaking inside! There is no role play or forced participation on this either.

WHAT a marvellous meeting we had in September, we were visited

by Andy Stowe from East Bristol Auction Rooms. Andy gave us a talk about the antique world and then we were able to participate in the talk with some of our own antiques. Although my mum was there, I did take something else too. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and as always a great attendance with members and visitors.

October brings the annual meeting. Along with the May Resolutions meeting, this is a very important meeting for the members when we ‘swear in’ the president, secretary and treasurer along with the committee members. Without a committee there would be no Mangotsfield WI. If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone.

We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too.

Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits.

SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI Our September meeting was a lovely relaxed evening, which was welcomed after all the excitement and preparations for our Group Event in the previous few months.

It was a catch up on all the business side. A letter has been received from Southmead Hospital thanking us for our donation to the Stroke Unit, which was money raised at the “Tea on the Lawn” event in the summer. This charity was chosen in memory of Catherine who is greatly missed by us all. We also talked about our next Group Event on the 5th December, which will be based

on a Christmas theme with lots of singing and fun. I am pleased to say that we will again muster up a team for the skittles tournament and let’s hope we can get past the first round this time. The saying “It’s not the winning but the taking part” springs to mind.

In early summer, each member was given sunflower seeds, (the same variety to make it fair) and we were asked to grow the best sunflowers possible. Some fail miserably for various reasons but our winners this year, who showed photograph evidence, were Diane for the biggest head at 38cm/15” wide and Janet for the tallest overall at 188cm/6’2” high.

We then had a cuppa and the obligatory biscuit, which this time was yummy shortbread and we each had an ice cream which had been kept in my freezer and were surplus to requirements from our “End of the Pier” Group Event.

Thank goodness I no longer have to keep reminding my family that they DO NOT belong to us.

The evening was finished by using our artistic talents to make Christmas cards, with the bits and bobs being kindly supplied by Doreen and Lewina, who do this for a hobby in real life, so to speak.

There is always a warm welcome for new members and the first taster session is free. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the Shortwood Chapel which is at Main Road, Shortwood. Our next meeting is on 10th October and it is the AGM followed by refreshments and a quiz and games. Hope to see you then!!

n LYDE GREEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION IT’S our 1st birthday! We can hardly believe that it has been a whole year since the LGCA opened the doors of the Lyde Green Community Centre and began taking our first bookings.

To mark this occasion, we will be celebrating with the whole community, as well as South Gloucestershire Council, with a grand opening ceremony/birthday event taking place at LGCC on Sunday October 13, from 1pm onwards. We will be inviting all our regular hirers to come and promote their classes, and there will be plenty of free activities. We have lots of celebrations planned and refreshments – so please come along to see what LGCC has to offer and celebrate all we have achieved so far.

LGCA recently held the latest quarterly partnership meeting.

We were pleased to welcome some new partners, including Rotary Club, Happy Days Nursery,

Sainsburys and representatives of the new IAAPS development.

The loud noises associated with the fireworks can give rise to fear and even phobias. Your pet might shake, pant, salivate, urinate/defecate inappropriately, hide or cling to you or try to escape for example.

There are some short-term solutions that can help your pet to cope better, when the firework season is looming, until appropriate Your Vet and behavioural advice can be sought. Stepping off the subs' bench Blog 67 – Keith's debut blog!

SO! After 4ish years of being asked nicely, cajoled and pleaded with by the one and only Tim Button, I have finally found time in my hectic schedule to take a crack at something very dear to all of us at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step……Tim’s Blog!!

If you have ever heard Tim refer to “Keith the Physio”, well that is me, so Hello from me at last. I have known Tim from the heady days of working with Bath Rugby and then our paths crossed again working together for the London Olympics in 2012. Not long after that we had a chance meeting and Tim asked me if I knew anyone who could manage and work in his brand spanking new physiotherapy practice that he was building in Mangotsfield. Some time later I finally understood that was a subtle “Would you like to….” sort of question, and Next Step Exercise & Performance was started. That will be a little over five years ago now and many of you will now have heard of or met our wonderful team: Chris – physio and Pilates extraordinaire! Sian – one of the best physios I have had the good luck to work with (and Chris of course!) and what she does not know about feet, particularly those belonging to dancers, is probably not worth knowing. More recently Darren joined us over this summer to help out while I worked pre-season with Bristol Rovers, and we hope to see him again when he finished his prescribing qualification – good luck Darren.

Some of you will know that I have had the honour and privilege to be Head of Medical Services at the mighty Bristol Rovers for the past three seasons, and after long chats with my two bosses, Tim and of course Mrs G, we have all agreed that now is the time to leave Rovers and come back to Next Step at this amazingly exciting time now we are moving to our new premises in the very near future.

Tim HAS mentioned the new clinic right??! Leaving a lead position in a professional sports club is never an easy decision, nor can it be taken lightly. When I delivered the news to Graham (manager) and Martyn (CEO) back in May, they gave me their full support and were kind enough to allow me to time my leaving date in order to give the new practice my full attention.

For that I shall always be eternally grateful to them both and wish

them and the lads the very best for both this season and all future endeavors.

It is a very exciting time at Next Step and Cleve Chiropractic as we continue to plan for our new clinic and all the opportunities that come with that. Staying in Mangotsfield we will have at 2-3 clinic rooms, so those of you who thought Chris and I were never seen in the same room together meant we COULD be the same person can rest easy.

Chris will be continuing his super popular Pilates sessions in the new, larger gym and I am currently twisting his arm about giving us a couple more sessions to satisfy the Pilates minded among you and get rid of the dreaded waiting list for those sessions. We are also looking to start a yoga class so watch this space!

Regular blog-readers will have seen the exciting announcement that Luke has joined us from Bristol Rovers, and if you have not yet experienced those talented hands, you should really get booked in to try the treatments that professional athletes take for granted. If you are lucky, Luke might treat you to some of his life experience stories that include competing at World Championships, climbing Kilimanjaro and flying a plane! He really does get about!!

Now we have secured Luke’s hands and banter, he and I will be working hard to bring something new to the Next Step repertoire and indeed new to most of the Bristol area. We intend to start running “Return to Play” rehabilitation on a local sports field in the very near future. In professional sport the bulk of the rehab is done out on the grass, with a ball and some cones and poles, covering distances and at speeds designed to match your actual playing experience.

Though we can guide rehab from the treatment cubicle, nothing can beat the “pitchside” experience in both quality of rehab and in getting the athlete ready psychologically for Return to Play. We take it for granted when working in pro sport and now we are planning to bring that experience to you and deliver it locally. We truly believe that this will be a one of a kind service, and if I tell you that this was Luke’s favourite role at Bristol Rovers then you know you will be getting the full Return to Play experience just like the professionals have every

day.

In the meantime, I will be helping plan for the new clinic (Tim HAS mentioned the new clinic?) and keep developing our exciting injection service, offering steroid and Durolane joint injections has been a really rewarding new service. Meeting some lovely people who just want to get a head start on their arthritis, impingement or frozen shoulder and so on, it is really a privilege to be able to offer them something that can help straight away and do away with the need for long waits elsewhere.

Well, that is enough for me for one blog, and it has been pretty cool getting to talk to you all instead of reading Tim talking about us for a change.
