Plans to build a Travelodge, Costa Coffee and a Greene King pub and restaurant have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.

Developer Hinton Group says the new businesses on land next to the Harlequin Office Park, off Folly Brook Road, could create up to 100 new jobs.

The site is close to the Wick Wick roundabout, where the Avon Ring Road meets Badminton Road, between the M4 and the Willy Wicket pub.

POLICE have arrested a man after two women reported assaults on a cycle path at Mangotsfield.

Both incidents took place within half an hour of each other, on the stretch of path which links the Bristol and Bath Railway Path to Pomphrey Hill on the morning of July 21.

In the first, a man grabbed a woman’s waist as she was running on the path between the old Mangotsfield station and Rodway Hill at about 8.15am.

He ran off after she called for help from passing cyclists.

In the second, at about 8.40am, a man pushed a woman who was out walking her dog on the path. She had been asked for directions by the same man about 10 minutes earlier, near

Drama at petrol station TWO people suffered minor injuries when a car ploughed through the window of a busy petrol station.

The Vauxhall Corsa car drove from the forecourt of the Sainsbury’s Emersons Green petrol station through the window of the sales kiosk, demolishing a wall and shelves and ramming an ice cream freezer.

The driver, who was in his 80s, was helped out of the car and given a check-up by emergency services called to the scene on June 26.

A second person was also slightly injured.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service, paramedics and a hazardous area response team from South Western Ambulance Service went to the scene because of the presence of flammable fuel at the site.

Firefighters checked the kiosk was safe but it had to be closed for more than a day while it was boarded up and emergency repairs carried out. The petrol station was then closed overnight from July 11-12 for further repairs. A Sainsbury’s spokesman apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers by the closure.

Avon and Somerset police immediately linked the incidents and on July 23 announced that they had arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with both alleged assaults.

As the Voice went to print, the arrested man was being held in custody while further police enquiries were carried out.

Motorists would reach all three businesses via the Harlequin Office Park access road, Fieldfare, which turns off Folly Brook Road, although the site is also close to a cycle path and m3 metrobus stops on the ring road.

The developer says the site currently has planning permission for a three-storey office building but has not received any "viable or credible interest" from prospective tenants for the past ten years.

South Gloucestershire planners have until mid-October to decide whether to approve the plans and anyone who wants to see them and make a

Hinton Group says the development "would provide major benefits for the local economy through job creation, economic development and bringing a vacant site into

beneficial use".

The developer says it would "complement the existing employment uses surrounding the site and provide important services making the surrounding employment area attractive for prospective and current

Event sizzles in spite of the clouds LYDE Green’s fourth annual Summer Sizzler saw families come out in their droves to celebrate their community.

Taking place on Saturday July 13, the event was organised by Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA) and took over the space outside the Bristol and Bath Science Park on Dirac Crescent from 11am to 4pm.

The event was the biggest yet and welcomed over 40 stands, caterers and display. Some of the stalls on offer including hair plaiting, face glitter and arts and crafts, and visitors also had the opportunity to meet LGCA, find out more information about the Lyde Green Community Centre.

Rides were provided for children by Jenkins Amusements and proved extremely popular, especially the unique water orbs which lots of smaller guests were queuing up to try.

The scouts delighted with a camp style cooking fire, making smores in the traditional way, while St James’s church provided fabulous free crafts. The event was crowned by the ever popular Vets4Pets dog show, which sadly had to be cancelled last year due to the heat, but was back with even more participants of the four-legged kind.

In addition, live music was also provided by local performers.

There was also a host of refreshments on offer for residents to enjoy, with pizzas from Pizza Adore, a hog roast, and hot drinks from Coffee at Lyde. As a result of having so many delicious food choices of offer, a number of sell-outs were reported and a bar was provided by the local Rotary club.

The organisers told the Voice that the event displayed the new development at its finest, welcoming talent to the stage and offering families the chance to join the

Emerson and Lyde communities in a fun-filled day full of smiles.

Commenting on the event, Sadik AlHassan, Deputy Mayor of Emersons Green Town Council, said: “It was great to see so many people at this year’s Sizzler. The LGCA team did an amazing job organising and with the help of volunteers made a fantastic day despite some bad weather early on.

“I and some of my fellow councillors really enjoyed the opportunity to talk with residents about what the town council is focussing on at the moment like our summer events for children and the development of a Bee Corridor in the area. A massive thank you to everyone involved as events like this are what make our area a great place to live.”

The next Summer Sizzler is set to take place on Saturday July 1, 2020 – put the date in your diary!

£30,000 found to repair playground MONEY has been found to fix a play area damaged by arsonists.

Safety surfacing and a slide at Springfield Park off Springfield Road in Mangotsfield were damaged when they were set on fire by a teenager on April 30.

The play area had to be sealed off for safety reasons after the fire, which left some local youngsters in tears, and fencing remains around it as the school holidays get under way.

After the blaze South Gloucestershire Council said repairing the damage would cost around £30,000 but said it needed to “explore options” for funding the repairs.

Now the council’s cabinet has announced a £200,000 investment into play equipment and facilities across the area, which will include £30,000 funding for the repairs at Springfield Park.

As reported in last month’s Voice, a 14-year-old from Emersons Green has admitted starting the fire. Police said the boy had been referred to a youth panel for a decision on how he will be dealt with. Three other children interviewed after the incident – a 14-year-old boy and girls aged 13 and 14 – will face no further action.

A spokesman for the council’s cabinet said the money had come from a £4 million underspend for the last financial year,. The council is also looking at ways of involving volunteers to help restore the play area.

Following a recent boundary change, the park is inside the council’s Emersons Green ward.

Ward councillor Rachael Hunt, who is also the cabinet member for communities, said: “I am delighted that the council have been able to provide this

Fellow Emersons Green representatives Colin Hunt and Judy Adams said: “Because the play area at Springfield Park is such a popular area for children and young families in our area, the damage caused by the fire had a considerable impact on the community.We

have been working towards holding a public meeting to discuss the damage and possible ways forward, which might still happen if there is sufficient interest, but regardless, this announcement will come as a very welcome reprieve to residents who had been concerned about where the money might come from.”

Darren set for marathon ride to aid Marie Curie

A RESIDENT from Lyde Green is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.

Darren Mew has lived in the area with his two daughters for a year and a half, and works for Lloyds Bank in the centre of Bristol. As part of the company’s charity scheme, which encourages employees to raise funds to help their communities, Darren and two of his colleagues – Louisa Amsell from Yatton and Steve Burnard from Frome – decided to put their interest in cycling to good use and raise funds for Marie Curie.

They will pedal the length of the UK, covering a total of 980 miles in nine days.

However, rather than staying in a comfy hotel to rest and recuperate at the end of each day, they will camp instead.

The group will travel to Land’s End on Friday September 6, before starting the challenge on the Saturday morning. The Ride Across Britain 2019 cycle event is being organised by Deloitte and will see over 900 rides taking part from as far away as Canada and Australia. Darren told the Voice: “It does feel a bit more daunting the closer we’ve got to setting off! Our friends think we’re a bit crazy but are well behind us and are confident that we can do it.

“We decided to raise funds for Marie Curie because our families have benefited from their work. I had a grandparent who spent the last few weeks of their life at home which was thanks to the work of the charity – it made a massive difference to be at home in their own environment.

“None of us knew what training would be involved when we agreed to take on the challenge, but we’ve drawn up a training plan between us. Although it looks easy on paper, when you look outside on a Saturday morning and there are gale force winds, it can be really hard to motivate yourself! Nine days of consecutive cycling is certainly going to be a big challenge!”

New scout group seeks volunteers

Launch events for Lee’s charity fund

PARENTS and members of the local community are being asked to volunteer and support a new Scout group in Lyde Green.

The group started three months ago and meets on Tuesday evenings during term time at the Lyde Green Community Centre. The Beavers (for six – eight year olds) meet from 5.15pm-6.15pm and the Cubs (for eight to 10 year olds) meet from 6.45pm-8pm. The older section for Scouts (10 – 14 year olds) meet in Emersons Green as there aren’t enough members for the Lyde Green group at the moment.

The Beavers group is already over-subscribed, and there is a waiting list for children who won’t be able to join for two years due to their age. The Scout groups are for both boys and girls and encourage children to take part in activities and experiences that they wouldn’t

TWO fundraising events are taking place in memory of eight-year old Lee Belgium from Lyde Green, who died in April after battling leukaemia for the third time.

His family, who raised nearly £80,000 earlier this year in the hope of taking him abroad for treatment, are setting up a charity called “Lee Belgium Lasting Legacy”, to help other families who have lost a child and to keep Lee’s name alive.The family have registered the charity and are waiting for their charity number to come through.

The charity will provide free haircuts for funerals, as well as items such as teddy bears with heart-shaped lockets of hair and photo pillows in order to help families remember their loved one.

The first fundraising event is taking place on Thursday August 29 at The Park Centre in Kingswood from 1–3pm. Entry will cost £1 per person and there will be a toy sale, face painting, a bouncy castle, sweets, a cake sale and much more.

The second event is on Saturday August 31 at the Live & Let Live pub in Frampton Cotterell from 3pm, where there will be a BBQ, auction, face painting, karaoke and cakes, and children are encouraged to come along in fancy dress.

In addition, following a Just Giving fundraising campaign, Lee’s former primary school, Park Primary in Kingswood, have raised the £2500 needed to buy a Captain America superhero bench in memory of Lee, who was a superhero fan. His mum Clare told the Voice that the bench will be in place during the first week of September, ready for the start of the new school year.

Each child gets so much more confident the longer they stay with the Scouts. “ Scouting is amazing at trying to get the community together, and Lyde Green already has a great community so there is lots of potential for people to get involved.”

DOWNEND School finished the year on a high with its second annual PRIDE day.

Pupils came together to take part in activities and enjoy ice cream, candyfloss and waffles in the sun.

Staff planned a series of activities for the event and students also helped to run stalls and provided entertainment.

They paid £1 each to ditch school uniform for the day and also paid for treats, workshops and games, with all the money raised going to the nominated charities of each of the school’s four houses.

Head teacher Lisa Howell said: “Students enjoyed fun in the sun with stalls, activities and ice-cream – which was most welcome in the warm weather.”

your Anger over concrete football Cast vote for A FOOTBALL which had been filled with concrete and left with a sinister note saying 'Bet that hurt' has sparked anger among members of the community.

The blue and white leather ball was discovered by a dog walker at Pomphrey Hill who promptly removed the offending item.

One of ball's pentagonal panels had been cut out, concrete poured inside and left to set until it was rock solid.

The walker, who does not want to be named, posted a photo on Staple Hill and Mangotsfield Residents Facebook page saying: “Found and removed this from the upper cricket pitch at Pomphrey last night (July 7), a sick joke waiting to cause someone some pain, a concrete filled football with some kind messages written on.”

Dozens of group members responded by condemning the actions of the culprit, saying the consequences could have been

dire. One woman said: “What is wrong with people playing sick jokes on innocent people, what sort of mind would think of something so horrible as to hurt someone?”

Another man posted: “That could change someone's life. A really nasty, nasty thing to do.”

The ball, which has now been destroyed by police, was estimated to have weighed 15 to 20kg. It had been designed to keep the ball looking as round and realistic as possible.

He said: “What may have seemed like a thoughtless joke could have caused serious and life changing injuries to anyone who unwittingly tried to kick the ball. Given that this 'football’ was left on a playing field this could have been a real possibility.

Thankfully due to the vigilance of one of our residents the police were informed and the ball has now been destroyed.”

A police spokesman said: “We received an email on July 9 at about 8.20am reporting that on Sunday July 7 at about 8pm a football was found on Pomphrey Hill playing fields . It had been filled with concrete and left in the middle of a cricket pitch.

“Various messages were written on the outside of the ball, which suggested it was a malicious act. Anyone with information should contact us quoting call card 0572 of the 9 July.”

Space research is vital for our future

S Space Minister, I was honoured last month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, marking half a century since the historic launch and moon landing which captured the imagination of people all around the world in 1969.

The events of that July have inspired generation after generation and the effects will reverberate for years to come.

For decades now, we have been able to reap the benefits from the research needed to explore space, from laser eye surgery to portable X-ray machines.

We can continue to build on our efforts in space research and technology development, for example by using satellites to aid the observation of the changes happening to our planet.

This will be vital to help us deal with the challenges we face

right here on Earth.

This is why last month I was also very proud to announce that the UK Space Agency and NASA have agreed to enhance our cooperation and will work together on joint scientific projects and future lunar missions. This new partnership between the UK and the USA, along with our continued commitment to the European Space Agency as we leave the EU, will allow the UK to embrace and lead in the new Space Age and could mean we are one step closer to seeing a Briton walk on the Moon.

As the local MP, I was also delighted to see that the Jodrell Bank Observatory here in the UK recently became our country’s 32nd site to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The Observatory is home to the Lovell Telescope, the world’s third-largest steerable

radio telescope named after founder and famous South Gloucestershire resident Sir Bernard Lovell.

The world-renowned scientist and physicist was born and raised in Oldland Common and educated at Kingswood Grammar School, now King’s Oak Academy, and went on to receive a first-class degree from the University of Bristol. I am proud of this addition to the prestigious UNESCO list, in recognition of our local astronomer’s pioneering work and research, his life and achievements an example of what South Gloucestershire children can aspire to.

Space will continue to inspire and amaze all of us for years to come, and as a country I know we will continue to build on our strengths to ensure space remains a key priority in the future

Children at the Abacus Pre-school meet up with regulars at the Mangotsfield and Castle Green United Reformed Church to play games and have a singalong.

The pre-school, which has 60 children aged two to four on its roll, meets five days a week on premises at the church site in Cossham Street. For the monthly singalong they come into the church itself to join people who drop in for the church’s coffee morning.

Pre-school manager Kate Menear said: “It’s lovely to see the children with the elders – it’s amazing to see some of them, who are normally quite quiet. They are never shy when they come here and everyone enjoys the singalong.”

They said the Bromley Heath Viaduct roadworks had led to “long queues of traffic from Downend towards Cleevewood Bridge” and warned this was likely to happen again, adding: “If you wanted to turn right or go over towards Winterbourne you had to make a longer journey, adding to time spent en route and pollution, which will be the same again.”

The councillors said they had been told the option to go straight over towards Winterbourne from Frenchay may be tried during the experimental order period.

Almost all comments on the Voice’s Facebook page raised

concerns over the changes.

One reader said: “Traffic will be forced to travel further, there will be tailbacks at the M32 roundabout and pollution will increase. As we all know, these ‘temporary’ changes with consultation are a done deal.”

South Glos Green Party said the council had “rushed out a quick fix to avoid a legal challenge” over the pollution and said changes to the Y4 bus route could “drive more people away from the very public transport we need to be getting them on” .

Cabinet member for transport Steve Reade said the authority had to comply with a government direction “to improve air quality on this part of the A4174 ring road in the shortest time possible for all road users”.

He said: “Our traffic modelling has shown that the changes will allow east and westbound traffic on the ring road to flow more efficiently and

help reduce queues, and that the removal of limited movements at the interchange will improve traffic flow for all vehicles.

“It is important to note that this is an experimental order that

can be amended through time, so if we see a particular type of road user is negatively affected then the order can be adjusted.”

We're keeping our cool ...

WITH the schools finishing for the holidays and the sun shining, summer is in full swing.

It’s important to remember that for those working during this time, in particular those working in uniform, the heat is more than a little uncomfortable.

Regardless of this, I know officers will continue to keep our communities safe and feeling safe to ensure you are able to enjoy all that summer brings.

In Avon and Somerset, we’re lucky enough to have many wonderful events take place over the summer. At the start of July, the biggest music festival in the world came to our doorstep and over 200,000 people descended on Worthy Farm for Glastonbury 2019. I was pleased to hear that crime levels at Glastonbury have remained low with 118 crimes reported this year compared to 202 in 2017, a reduction of 41.6%.

I was also delighted that St Paul’s Carnival was back again

for another year as it’s a fantastic celebration of people, diversity, culture, community and music.

The event proves what great things can happen when the whole city pulls together, and is a testament to the local community and the love that residents have for the place they live and work.

Most recently, we celebrated Bristol Pride and officers proudly donned rainbow colours and marched alongside revellers at the annual parade. As with the other two events I have mentioned, Pride brings local people together to celebrate our differences and allows us to share the important message that hate crimes will not be tolerated.

Being targeted because of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other reason is unacceptable.

It's been over three months since Operation Remedy started.

The operation, which focuses on knife crime, burglary and drugs

in our area, has got off to a flying start and has made notable improvements in tackling these issues. Since April, there have been 450 related offences; 33 warrants executed, 23 of which resulted in a positive outcome; a total of 287 stop searches; and 414 reports of crime from both the public and police officers.

Various stolen items have been seized, recovered and returned to the owners. Drugs have been seized, including approximately 645 cannabis plants, 12 grams of Amphetamine and 1 kilo of cocaine.

I know people will be pleased with the police’s increased focus on these issues. There’s still plenty to be done but I am delighted with the positive results the team have achieved so far. We will continue to work hard and send a clear message to criminals that coming into our villages, towns and cities to commit their crimes is not an option.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens Finally, I mentioned a new initiative called the ‘Chat Bench’ that hopes to tackle isolation within the senior community. I’m delighted to read that this Avon and Somerset Police initiative has gained real traction and inspired communities as far away as the USA to start their own ‘Chat Bench’ to tackle loneliness.

Pre-school 'has good teachers and confident learners' THE education watchdog has praised a day nursery and pre-school after its first ever inspection.

Ofsted visited Muddy Puddles in Blackhorse Road in June and its report has now been published.

The regulator rates preschools in in four areas: leadership and management, teaching and learning quality, outcomes for children and their development, behaviour and welfare. Muddy Puddles, founded by Sam Vitale in 2017, was rated good in all four areas.

Sam was an early years teacher before setting up Muddy Puddles with her mum and co-manager Lynne Thompson, who has worked in early years education for 30 years.

Inspector Dominique Allotey said Sam had a “clear vision for the nursery” and worked to continually identify and address areas for improvement.

She said staff benefited from

regular training, supervision and support, and had regular opportunities to enhance their professional development.

The inspector said: “Staff are good teachers and show enthusiasm in their interactions with children. They understand how children learn and ensure that children benefit from time to be independent and make their own choices in play. Staff ensure activities interest both boys and girls, helping to promote gender

equality in play.”

Ms Allotey said all children at Muddy Puddles made good progress, including those who spoke English as an additional language and those who had special educational needs or disabilities. She found children to be “confident learners”, who concentrated well during activities, made friends easily and took turns well.

She said: “Children interact well together and staff regularly

praise children for doing things well, which helps boost children's self-esteem and reinforces the nursery rules. Children benefit from regular fresh air and exercise in the nursery garden.

“Young children learn through messy play opportunities. They explore a range of materials and textures in the outdoor mud kitchen.

Older children benefit from activities that prepare them well for the eventual move on to school, such as physical education sessions and playing small group games to develop social skills.”

Sam said: “We are very pleased with the report and felt that it reflected our nursery well.

“We are so proud of the children and we are pleased that their great communication skills and lovely personalities shone through.

“Our parents and families are always so supportive and we are so proud of our fantastic team.”

School's auction nets £10,000+ PARENTS concerned about the lack of funding in education put their weight behind an auction which raised more than £10,000 for Mangotsfield School.

Mums and dads were aghast when they watched a TV series last year which highlighted the school's funding woes.

Following the documentary, the academy launched the Mango 50 – an appeal to raise £50,000 to fund the refurbishment of its science labs.

The auction of goods and promises was the culmination of an idea pitched to head David Spence by parent Nick Kenway. Nick then galvanised other parents to unite and put on the event.

From sourcing goods to organising the evening, parents worked hard to ensure the auction was a success.

The event, on July 5, saw 150 people bidding on items as diverse as a year’s membership to the new David Lloyd gym, through to a signed Marcus Rashford shirt.

Auctioneers Adam Tutton, CEO of Bristol Rovers Community Trust, and Jon Parsons, ex-Mangotsfield staff member, helped the event go with a swing, injecting fun into the proceedings.

Mr Spence said: “We are so indebted to our amazing parents, staff and wider community for getting behind this ambitious event. Being a head is a tough job at times, but can be the best job in the world on occasions like this when the whole community comes together in the name of a cause.”

Mr Kenway, whose daughter Lily is at the school and will be joined by sibling Ruby in September, said: “After watching the documentary I think as a parent I understood the financial situation the local schools were in and what they were fighting against. Mr Spence contacted me and explained he was not willing to accept the situation and wanted to do something about it. I thought I should get involved and help where I could. My children’s education is my priority and if I can help to improve things at the school then I will.”

Adam Tutton, CEO of Bristol Rovers Community Trust, said: ““The school community has really pulled together and I was honoured to have been able to play a small part in a fantastic evening of fundraising.”

Memories of happy days at Rodway MANGOTSFIELD School extended a warm welcome to ex-pupils from its predecessor school during an emotional reunion.

More than 70 Old Rodwegians from Rodway School met old friends and caught up during the event on July 13.

All the visitors had been pupils at the predecessor school, so would all have attended Rodway School before 1982, when Mangotsfield School first came into being as the result of a merger between Chase Boys’ and Rodway School.

Rodway School had originally been founded as Rodway

Some of the Old Rodwegians who came back to the classroom for a reunion event at Mangotsfield School Technical High School in 1957.

The walk down memory lane consisted of a tour round the school and then a perusal of the school's small archive.

Current head teacher David Spence said: “The main hall and staircase are probably the most obvious examples from that

era, and it was very interesting to hear tales from yesteryear where health and safety, risk assessments and safeguarding were most definitely not order of the day! The uniform even consisted of a straw boater in the early days.

“A huge thanks to Julie Scull

for organising, and to Anne Wells, ex-member of staff, both former Rodway School pupils, for conducting some of the tours and supporting what was a really successful morning. We hope to create an alumni network and to put on further events at the school.”

n NEWS WELFARE checks on dementia sufferers in South Gloucestershire could be carried out by Amazon’s Alexa and neighbours “popping in”, it has been claimed.

Councillors said they were “horrified” at the possibility, which they discovered during a monthly budget monitoring task group meeting on adult social care.

The council insists it is exploring assistive technology such as Amazon’s voice-activated virtual assistant to provide better care and that it would run alongside, not replace, traditional support such as carers’ visits.

Worries over ‘Alexa home care’ examples of how social services will develop and we were given a real example of how technology can be used.I have no issue with that but the example we were given was someone with early-stage dementia who it was suggested should have a daily welfare check.The solution for that was to have an Alexa put in and for a neighbour to be popping in.Those were the words — ‘to have a neighbour popping in’.

“If that was your parent or grandparent who had early-stage dementia, that the social

services review depended on a neighbour popping in, I would be disappointed.”

A council spokesman said: “Using digital assistants is not something we are offering, but with further research and with the full understanding of individuals and their families, and the recommendation of professionals such as occupational therapists, we believe they may have a role to play in the care people need. There are a host of new developments that can help those with increasingly complex care needs.”

Botteginos sponsors team THESE young footballers are raring to go for the new season after securing a new kit sponsor.

Botteginos have committed to kitting out the Emersons Green Junior Football Club boys team for the next two seasons, when they will play at Under 9s and then Under 10s level.

The boys play in the Hanham Minor League and, after a great 2018/19 season at Under 8 level, are expecting big things this coming season.

They have already played in their new kit at the annual Emersons Green club tournament on the Walkers Playing fields at the end of June.

Managers Mark Skidmore and Barry Greenslade, the boys and the parents welcomed the sponsorship deal from the Emersons Green restaurant, which is run by local businessmen Raf and Gino Botta.

Emersons Green JFC was established in 2014 to provide children in the area with football training, games and enjoyment.

From the 30 children who joined at its onset the club has grown considerably over the last five years and now has over 230

players registered.

Emersons Green JFC offers boys and girls the opportunity to play grass-roots football, from mini kickers soccer schools, to teach younger children from four upwards basic

skills, to Under 15s.

Winning together

WELL what a month we’ve just had! England team winning the cricket, Hamilton winning the British Grand Prix (for the sixth time no less) stunning Wimbledon finals and it’s been beautifully warm & sunny weather! I find it very fascinating to read the stories about the often larger than life characters we see on the TV, when so few of us have the privilege of actually meeting or knowing the people we come to admire, love and even idolise.

Now I’m usually an armchair sports fan as with busy work & family life I don’t usually have the spare time to enjoy travelling to and watching live sporting events. This year however it all changed. I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to head off to Silverstone and enjoy a full

three days trackside and watch the whole event live for the first time.

I realised just how close we were to the action when as a racing car took a corner a little too wide a piece of gravel flew up and hit me in the face just under my eye.

Thanks to my trusty Ray-Bans my eyes were protected, (from the bright sun as well as flying objects!) but it was a useful reminder that even watching sports is not entirely risk free.

The personal stories about our sporting heroes and how they value and respect the support of their families are perhaps quite different to the sports stories I grew up with, when I think in the past it would have been seen as a sign of weakness to be thanking our families for the necessary help they give us. I for one, know that without a loving and supporting

family both at home now, and when I was growing up I would most probably not be where I am today.

My aim for our teams at our practices is that they all feel a valued part of our work family.

We enjoy success together and we share the difficulties that life so often can bring as well. This ultimately makes us a closer and more effective team as we care for each of our patients. It also creates a pleasant & friendly atmosphere which hopefully you find welcoming as you visit and we enjoy working in.

Special needs group wins national award A GROUP that gives a voice to families of children with disabilities has had its work recognised with a national award.

South Glos Parents and Carers was nominated for the Excellence in Parent Carer Participation award as part of charity Contact’s ‘Together at 40’ celebrations.

The group was presented with the award

by Minister for Children and Families Nadhim Zahawi during a ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster and hosted

by Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter Jane Garvey.

SGPC is the parent carer forum for South Gloucestershire, representing families of children and young people, aged up to 25, with additional needs.

Founded 10 years ago from a meeting of eight parents in a coffee shop, the group now has more than 1,150 members and 40 volunteers, providing a range of services.

The first SGPC community base opened in Kingswood in 2009 and its head office is in Poole Court, Yate.

In London to receive the award were SGPC members Rachel Trueman and Leonie Pollinger, who both live in Emersons Green.

Leonie Pollinger and Rachel Trueman of South Glos Parents and Carers receive their award from Children's Minister Nadhim Zahawi executive, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award. Our passion and our drive are to see service improvements for our community and making sure that we are fully involved in the process.

“Over the past 10 years we have been working really hard to build trust and relationships with education, health and

social care services, with the sole aim of working co-productively together in mutual understanding towards positive change. We have had successes but there is still a lot of work to be done.

“Our community is our motivation.

Without our community giving their time and energy attending our events, completing our surveys and giving us their views, winning this award would not have been possible.”

Julie Bye, a parent who nominated the group, said: “They are a force for change, but also hugely supportive. They run a counselling service and training for parent carers to empower them to get jobs.”

South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage and MPs Luke Hall and Chris Skidmore also attended the ceremony.

Any parent carer of a child with additional needs in South Glos, diagnosed or otherwise, is welcome to join the SGPC community and access the services and support offered, which include low-cost counselling, workshops, accessible stay and play, drop-in support sessions, support groups, written guides and a closed Facebook group.

We’ll be at the Dame School again giving the internals a good clean and tidy and “renovating” an old picnic table and bench that we recovered from the old primary school before its demise. If we get enough volunteers, then St James Church have asked us if we could do some gardening (I think they mean shrub cutting back) at St James Church Hall. If these dates have passed by the time you read this, don't despair - there's plenty more you can help us with!

We attended the S.Glos Council Community Engagement Forum at Staple Hill Library.

We now have our own slot at the meeting, recognition of the work we are doing and difference we are making. However, the

meetings are still poorly attended so please come along; the next one is at Cleve Rugby Club on Tuesday November 19, kick off 7pm.

Did you know that the Red Lion now runs a very successful fortnightly “coffee and cakes”? It’s aimed at those who have little social interaction, a chance to get out and meet people for a chat over tea or coffee, cakes or sandwiches. It’s on every other Wednesday from 10am – noon, the next one is on Wednesday July 31 and it’s free, though you are welcome to make a donation in the collecting bucket. The money goes towards future projects We supported Mangotsfield Festival with a local history display and raised over £70 towards our Xmas decorations.

We held a meeting with Taylor Wimpey to discuss the field they own between Mangotsfield School and Cossham Street and in particular the poor state of the boundary fence.

The meeting was positive so hopefully we’ll see some improvements.

On the theme of builders, a meeting has been arranged with Cotswold Homes to discuss the proposed Artwork for Richmond Grove (the former school site). More on that soon.

Parking is a constant source of “irritation” to

many of us, whether it’s lack of parking spaces or people parking where they shouldn’t. On the latter, parking on the common is becoming a problem, it’s damaging the grass, so we are arranging a meeting with S. Glos Council with a view to replacing the posts on the common to prevent this.

Another “Did You Know”? This year marks the centenary of our war memorial and we intend to update the list of names as it is incomplete. We will also help arrange the remembrance parade and service, which gets bigger every year.

We remain indebted to our local councillors for all the work they do, much of which goes unnoticed and un-thanked.

More and more is happening in Mangotsfield. It’s fair to say that a lot of it is not driven or run by the Residents Association but it’s happening because the Residents Association exists and has prompted people to “do something”. Long may that continue.

Team raising awareness of bowel cancer THE team at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre have joined forces with Bowel Cancer UK to promote awareness of the condition.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, and as well as raising awareness, the team have also been raising funds for the charity that supports people with the condition.

Holly Wale, the centre’s business development manager, said: “We have raised almost £400 with raffles, cakes and book sales and a day when we donated money to wear our favourite team’s football shirts to work. On another occasion the centre looked lurid as we all wore green and yellow for the day and we are planning more events throughout the year to boost the total.”

Head of nursing Michelle Parsons added: “While we do not treat bowel conditions at the centre, we are carrying lots of leaflets and information throughout the month.

Almost 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK, and the quicker the symptoms are spotted, the more successful the treatment will be.

“There is a taboo around bowels, but do not let embarrassment or fear stop you asking your GP if you have a concern. Around

16,000 people die from bowel cancer each year, making it the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. Your doctor will not make you feel embarrassed and they would feel happier seeing you than have you face an uncertain future.”

Symptoms of bowel cancer can include: • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in

your stools • A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason • A pain or lump in your tummy.

Crackdown on misuse of street bins BINMEN will start checking litter bins in South Gloucestershire to try and catch people who are using them to dump their household waste.

The council says some residents are “regularly” throwing waste from their homes in street litter bins. Anyone whose waste is identified will face enforcement action and a possible fine.

The measure is part of a new 10-year waste strategy being launched by the council which sets a target of recycling 65 per cent of rubbish by 2035 and sending no more than 10 per cent to landfill.

The new strategy does not include any changes to kerbside collections, although from April next year bulky household items will be taken to a new facility to be shredded, removing metals, wood and rigid plastics for recycling. The remaining material would be sent to be burned to generate energy, with the aim of zero going to landfill.

The council’s new waste strategy is open for consultation until September 27. Comments can be made online at bit.ly/30Rwj8n, at local libraries or one-stop shops or by calling 01454 868154.

You will need: 2 pieces of fabric, each measuring 20cms x 30cms Complementing colour cotton Sewing machine Pins Sewing needle Fabric scissors Sewing machine Fabric glue Iron 1m length of ribbon Safety pin Oddments if felt or buttons for embellishments

4. Secure your safety pin into one end of your ribbon and fasten closed. With both fabrics facing you (wrong side facing) and using the safety pin to pull the ribbon through, thread the ribbon through one channel then through the next on the other piece of fabric and pull out the other side.

5. Now place the fabric rectangles on top of each other (right sides facing) and pin around each long side and the bottom. Once you have done this, ensure the ribbon has equal lengths outside of the end and that it isn’t twisted.

8. Pop your picnic cutlery in and pull the ribbons together to close your bag and tie off in a bow.

These can now be stored safely together for that next lovely summer picnic!

POSITIVE feedback from people undergoing joint surgery at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre has seen the facility appear near the top of a table of high performing hospitals.

The table is produced by NHS England and is based on health gains following hip and knee replacements.

It uses the Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) data, which is collected by the Health and Social Care Information Centre. The PROMs outcomes at the treatment centre placed it ninth in the country for hip replacement surgery.

Each year the centre performs around 1,000 joint replacements, and as well as NHS treatment, it now offers an affordable self pay service too.

1. Iron each piece of fabric flat.

Take one piece of fabric and fold one of the top (short) edges over by 1.5cms. Iron in place. Now fold the fabric over by a further 4cms and iron in place.

6. Starting at the side where the ribbon joins each piece of fabric, machine stitch around the three edges you have just pinned (including down the channel), ending at the bottom seam of the channel where each end of the ribbon is. Fasten off your threads and now sew, either by machine or hand stitch, a couple of stitches at the top of this channel to secure the sides in place but leave the channels open so that the ribbons poke out.

n AROUND THE WIs DOWNEND WI AT our June meeting we were joined by Clair McGill, who gave us a lovely relaxing evening of yoga, which was suitable for all members, whether it was in a chair or on the floor.

For July’s meeting we were being joined by Alan Freke, from Frenchay Museum, who was to talk to us about Frenchay Hospital’s Hidden History.

August is holiday season, so instead of a speaker we will be holding our annual quiz.

We are now starting to plan our programme for next year.

BROMLEY HEATH WI BHWI’s Fizz and Quiz July meeting included good news about our trips, sub-groups and proposed events.

Our members had enjoyed the recent NEC Craft Trip and our Heathfest tombola had proved a resounding success once again.

Sharon, our super sub-groups and events committee lady is currently considering a supper club group, which received a positive reaction.

The highlight of the evening was a fun quiz organised by quizmaster Matt Stringer, whilst we enjoyed our glass of fizz and luscious strawberries. Last but not least, a huge thank-you to the generous ladies who brought donations for the Resound Foodbank, with specific support for their school children’s Holiday Hunger project.

Like all WI’s, we take a break in August (don’t know if any of our ladies are heading Jerusalem way this year?). Look forward to seeing you all in September, when we will be joined by paramedic Jeff White.

MANGOTSFIELD WI WOW, what a brilliant July meeting! Pippa introduced us

to the concept of mindfulness practice.

She explained the benefits to regular mindfulness and how making time for yourself brings huge benefits to everyday life.

Mindfulness can assist us cope with anxiety.

Being Mindful isn’t a learned skill, it is about doing something for yourself.

By investing more in our mental health and our well-being we can help ourselves and the people around us.

So now we are all calm and reflective, we can prepare for the August Summer Evening.

There will be a ramble around Mangotsfield for those who wish to partake.

We will meet at the Lamb Inn after the ramble for a fish and chip supper, and enjoy a quiz.

We hope you will join us and enjoy a summer evening in good company with good food.

If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone.

We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening.

You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends.

BEECHMERE BELLES: EMERSONS & LYDE WI BEECHMERE Belles have had

another great month. Some of our members joined with another local WI to visit Denman, where they had a fantastic day involving demonstrations and great food. It was lovely to hear all about their day. The WI Denman Institute now offers well over 600 courses.

Members can attend for just a few hours for a specific course, to all day learning, an overnight stay and even weekend breaks. The best thing is Denman caters for all abilities, from beginners who want to try their hand at something new, to members who want to advance their skills in their chosen craft. As we all know, learning new things and meeting new people keeps our minds and souls fit and healthy.

June was also the month for visiting the confetti fields and as always they were beautiful. A large group of us had a very enjoyable evening eating and drinking at an establishment in Mangotsfield, the food was plentiful and lovely and the company was even better.

Our June meeting, on the fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green Village Hall, was taken by a representative from Paul’s Place. This charity, for the physically disabled, is based in Coalpit Heath and it was great to hear about all the opportunities that are on offer for people who think they will never be able to take part in the activities that “normal “ people can. A few days after our meeting, Paul’s Place were taking a group of people fishing for the weekend, which is no mean feat with wheelchair users, but the staff are committed to ensuring all their members have the chance to experience and achieve anything.

In August they are planning to have an afternoon of cream teas in their sensory garden and I am hoping that our lovely Belles can bake 100 scones between us to go with the jam and cream that has been donated. Then of course we have the age old question of, jam then cream, or, cream then jam!

July holds plenty in store for us, our much anticipated evening at Calendar Girls, our Cinema Club, we have chosen to see Yesterday, and our speaker for this month is from Feed the Homeless. I’m sure we will be shocked and saddened by what we hear but also enthusiastic when we find out ways in which we can help.

SHORTWOOD WI HELLO everyone! In July we hosted our first evening this year as group hosts – and what an evening it was! We welcomed all our guests, fellow members from other groups, to our “End of the Pier Evening” at Shortwood-on-Sea. The evening’s entertainment was started by a song and dance entrance performing Summer Holiday and Y Viva Espana. Unfortunately, despite numerous rehearsals, I think nerves took over and some of us forgot our left from our right. The musical accompaniment was by a fabulous ukulele group called the Saturday Strummers, who also played throughout the evening.

Next was our Punch and Judy show, performed by real-life grown-up puppets, namely ourselves. This was devised and narrated by Jo, who did a magnificent job and, after many rehearsals, we began to believe that we were in fact budding actors in a former life.

This was followed by a refreshments interval, when we served a picnic box of goodies and Marshfield ice cream.

The evening ended by showing our murder mystery film, The Presidential Campaign, where each president elected was murdered in mysterious ways and eventually the culprit was uncovered. This, again, was Jo’s brainchild and acted by us, in various stages, over the last six months, then finally edited by Caroline. Jo was the producer and musical director, accompanying the silent film on the piano. If you think you would like join this mad bunch of thespians, we would love to welcome new members and we meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Apologies for last month and a new treatment for arthritis FIRSTLY I must apologise for missing last month’s blog. Indeed, I do tend to write the blog on the last day or two before publication and I confess to getting caught out this time. But for good reason as my wonderful wife gave me the kick at midnight to tell me that her contractions had started. At 5:15am, another wonderful little boy was born into the Button family and we are overjoyed. I am pleased to say that mother and baby are doing well. So how’s that for a good excuse?

If that’s not enough the football season has started, and Keith and I are back to the grind with the players, coaches and support staff.

It should be an interesting season!

The new clinic refurbishment is going really well. I’m so pleased to be staying in Mangotsfield where we have made so many friends and have so many patients. It seems that as long as I bring the builders ice creams each day they are happy!

In the meantime the work never stops with patients and we are all very busy. This time of year brings us lots of tennis and cricket players but another more unique cause of injuries is the primary school sports days. Not for the children but all of the men pulling hamstrings in the dads' race! I don’t remember

the dads' race in my day. When it was Molly’s sports day a few weeks ago I declined due to this insider knowledge … I am a groin strain waiting to happen!

So after safely avoiding running with all the super fit younger dads I managed to pull my back bent over weeding in the garden! I really should know better. If you are gardening for a long time then you should have breaks every half an hour or so to give your body a chance to recover. Most of us are not used to working that hard all day and our backs aren’t conditioned for it. Luckily, I have easy access to a chiropractor and Jack managed to squeeze me in the next day. A couple of clicks and I was good to go. However, prevention is better than cure so if you are doing lots of gardening then remember to take regular breaks, bend your knees when lifting even light pots and put your sun cream on!

Now that Keith is a prescribing physio he has been busy doing injections for patient who need them. Most commonly he has been doing injections in shoulders that are impinged or frozen. You know if you have an impingement or similar shoulder problem when you struggle to lift your arm up to wash your hair or can’t get your

hand behind your shoulder blades the same as the other side. You can come and see Keith directly if you think you may need an injection and he can advise you accordingly.

He is also using a new treatment at the clinic called ‘a Durolane injection’ that helps with the cushioning and lubrication of a worn out joint. It is a drug free solution that has a long history of safety. I sent a patient over to Keith for this as he had osteoarthritis in both knees and was in a lot of pain walking. Two weeks after the injection he reported to me that he felt wonderful and couldn’t believe the improvement. So, if you feel like you may be suffering with arthritic joint pain then please call the clinic and ask to have an appointment
