David Lloyd centre plans are set for a re-match THE long wait for a leisure centre for Emersons Green could soon be over. Plans have gone in to South Gloucestershire Council for a David Lloyd centre, to include covered tennis courts, sports halls, indoor and outdoor pools, and gym and spa facilities. Proposals for a David Lloyd

centre were first mooted early in this millennium. They were initially said to be against longterm plans for the area but were approved on appeal in 2005. Planning approval was again granted in 2010 but David Lloyd requested a time extension “due to other financial commitments in the business”.

The organisation, which has 86 clubs in the UK including two in Bristol, began talks with the council last year about reviving its plans for the site just off the Rosary roundabout. It has now come up with a scheme it says is better than previous proposals. More details: Page 6

Gromit on his way DOWNEND & Bromley Heath Parish Council has sponsored a Gromit sculpture as part of The Grand Appeal’s arts trail, Gromit Unleashed 2. The sculpture will be in the village centre from July 2 and the council hopes residents will support it and help raise money for Bristol Children’s Hospital. Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council told the Voice it was delighted to back Gromit Unleashed 2 and was looking forward to welcoming visitors to Downend from across Bristol and beyond. n NEWS Rich Woods

Rich Woods has lived in Lyde Green with his wife Vicki and daughters Lily (six) and Ella (four) for two and a half years. During the snow, he used his 4x4 truck to help tow resident’s cars and give them a lift to the local supermarkets. Speaking about his decision to lend a hand, he said: “I have a commercial landscaping business and during the snow I couldn’t work so I had two days off. On the Thursday night I lent my truck to a friend who took NHS staff to and from work, and then I spent the Friday playing with the kids. “However, the fun ran out when they got cold, so rather than sitting around doing nothing (which is my worst nightmare) I saw on Facebook that people couldn’t get out of the estate to collect their shopping so I offered them a lift and the uptake

was great. Along with that I also towed three cars out of the snow and delivered emergency logs to a lady in Frampton Cotterell - it was a busy day and although I refused a cash reward, the wine was much appreciated!”

Everybody needs good neighbours... Curry 24

Genevieve Whittle Ford sent us this photo of her daughter sledging at Pomphrey Hill

Minal and Sachin Badekar have lived in Lyde Green for two years with their two young daughters. They set up their business, Curry 24, in October 2017, selling homemade curries to local residents for collection or delivery on Friday and Saturday nights. When they realised the effect that the snow was having, they decided to do something positive for the community and cook free meals for locals to collect. Minal said: “On the Friday, we started to see a lot of posts on the Lyde Green Local Facebook group from people saying that they were struggling because of the snow and that they didn’t have much food as they couldn’t get to the supermarket. We decided to do something to help the community, and rather than profit ourselves we wanted to

raise money for charity instead. “We asked people to place their orders via our Facebook page for collection between 4pm and 6pm on the Saturday. We thought that maybe 10-20 people would contact us, but when we received over 80 orders we couldn’t believe it!” The couple don’t normally cook for that many people in one go and when they realised how popular their offer had been, they had to make an emergency trip out in the snow to borrow a large cooking pot from a friend in Brislington, and also to Makro in Cribbs Causeway to buy more takeaway containers. Overall, Minal and Sachin served over 91 meals of chicken curry or tadka daal with rice and an onion bhaji, and raised £196.25 for their chosen charity, Muscular Dystrophy UK. “We are proud to have been able to do something

to help the community and raise money for such a worthwhile cause at the same time, and we’d like to thank everyone who placed an order during the snow for their support”, Sachin said.

Junction 18a:

Determined battle to save green belt CAMPAIGNERS from Siston turned out in force at the South Gloucestershire Council meeting to make the case against the Eastern options for the M4 Junction 18a and link road. They said their village had not been given sufficient consideration in the report to the cabinet. Zillah Savage said: “Siston is a unique and special area and its community cares about the past and looks forward to the ther future.”: It would be as adversely affected as any of the surrounding areas by “a dual carriageway gouged through the green belt”, she added. Mary Webb said the road would slice through every field on the farm that had been in her husband’s family for five generations and would have a catastrophic effect on their lifestyle and income. Lisa Fry said she had moved from the city to a home in the green belt three years ago and had been shocked to hear last year of the possiblility of a road through the area. She said the junction and link road were not wanted or needed but if they were to be built the Western option was preferable as it took much less green belt land.

Tony Payne spoke of the impact of any new road would have on the historic Siston Court and said that if the Eastern option went ahead it would ruin the idyllic ambience of Siston Lane by turning it into a rat run to the M4. Steve Ward said areas in the Siston parish close to the A420 and the A4174 already suffered noise and air pollution, which would worsen if a dual carriageway were built through it. Others agreed that there would be a negative impact on the whole of east Bristol. Rick Dunning, from Pucklechurch Parish Council, said he was glad to see that the recommendations to the cabinet concurred with the parish council’s view that any eastern option was not acceptable.

ANY new junction on the M4 should be at Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire Council has agreed. The council’s cabinet voted unanimously to press the case for the Western option for junction 18a, which would link with the ring road with the aim of reducing congestion and boosting the economy. Members noted the strength of feeling against the Eastern options at Pucklechurch, which were put forward by consultants who carried out a £500,000 feasibility study. The consultation on this study received large-scale engagement from the public, with more than 800 people attending roadshow exhibitions, 1275 returning online questionnaires, and over 300 residents writing letters to the council. Responses showed that 74 per cent of people supported a new junction on the M4. Fifty one per cent of people had a preference

Council votes for new M4 link at Emersons Green for the Western option, 17 per cent supported the Eastern option, and 26 per cent said they did not support either option. Six per cent had no preference on a location. A report to the cabinet showed that the costs of the two options had changed since the consultation was carried out. Western option costs had decreased by £18m to £428m and the Eastern option costs have increased by £31m to £378m. Highways England will need to undertake further reviews of the costs. The report also ruled out a second Eastern option, which would have run close to historic buildings in Pucklechurch, because of “ significant adverse impact on heritage and the surrounding population”. The cabinet was told that the Western option had the potential to enable 5,700 new jobs and generate income of £449m, thus proving it had significantly

higher potential for economic growth than the Eastern Option. The report concluded that there was a strong outline business case for the junction and link road at Emersons Green. Councillor Colin Hunt, cabinet member responsible for transport, said: “Having a new junction on the M4 is a long-standing aspiration of this council as there is a real need to ease congestion in this part of South Gloucestershire and provide better access to homes and jobs. “The option we are recommending that Highways England now progress to the next stage of the process is the Western option. This would create a new junction to the north west of the Lyde Green housing development and would also connect the Westerleigh Road and link up with the A4174 ring road. This is the best available option and will help

support future growth planned for the West of England.” A report to the cabinet showed that the costs of the After the meeting, cabinet member Councillor Ben Stokes, said: “As a local councillor for Pucklechurch and the surrounding villages, I have serious concerns about the Eastern option proposed, which would run a link road for 4km through the green belt near to Pucklechurch. This option has much graver environmental implications, does less to combat congestion at key points on the traffic network, offers less in the way of economic growth, and has one third of the level of public support that the Western option has.” Councillor Jon Hunt, who represents Downend, said: “The main reason for needing a new junction on the M4 is to ease congestion on the M32 and the ring road, which has so many drivers aiming for the M4 who have to travel either to Bristol

or towards Bath. Giving these people the option of joining the motorway earlier will make life easier for local residents, by freeing up road space. The study clearly shows that the Western option is by far the best option for achieving this – to me it is a no-brainer that we have to back this route.” Highways England will decide whether to take the scheme forward to the Department for Transport. Subject to funding and consent, the junction could be built from 2025. Pucklechurch parish councillors, who led a strong campaign against the Eastern options, say they are delighted to have won the first stage of the battle but will keep up their opposition until the proposals are formally dropped, which could be as far away as 2022. Labour councillors at South Gloucestershire have called for the Eastern option to be killed off as soon as possible.

Anyone for tennis at Lyde Green? PLANS for a David Lloyd centre on a site between the ring road and Folly Brook at Lyde Green will meet a need for leisure facilities in Emersons Green and Downend, its backers say. The nearest public facility is Downend Outdoor Sports Centre and the closest David Lloyd Centre is at Westbury-on-Trym, nearly eight miles away. "David Lloyd have a longstanding interest in the site and are keen to develop the site into the much required and demanded sports facility," the organisation says. Its proposals include three weather protected tennis courts and a show court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a multipurpose sports hall, gym facilities, 245 car parking and 20 cycle parking facilities. The site is off the Rosary roundabout and because of its proximity to the ring road and to overhead power lines is considered unsuitable for alternative forms of development. The David Lloyd organisation has worked with council officers to come up what it says are the best possible proposals, although a suggested roof terrace and additional glass to increase natural light were deemed too costly. It says the proposals are an improvement on plans put forward in 2005 and 2010.

The scheme will be considered by the council's planning committee. The public can comment online: find the plans on the South Gloucestershire website with the reference PK18/0692/F David Lloyd centres, founded by a former GB Davis Cup player, have some 475,000

members across Europe and employ more than 6,000 people, including an expert health and fitness team of over 1,800 professionals alongside more than 400 tennis coaches. In the UK, it has 800 tennis courts, 180 badminton courts and 140 squash courts, and 150 swimming pools.

Lyde Green mum named A MUM from Lyde Green who has been crowned Mrs England Curve 2018 hopes her success will encourage body confidence in others too. Emma-Jay Jones has lived in the estate with her two children, Maggie, two, and Zack, four, for two and a half years. She first became aware of the British Beauty Curve pageant last year after seeing an advert on Instagram. The pageant aims to showcase the diversity of women across Great Britain, and is specifically for ladies who are UK dress size 14 and above. There are three categories in total for women of different ages: Miss for ladies aged 18-29, Ms for ladies aged 30 and above, and Mrs for ladies aged 18+ and legally married or in a civil partnership. After initial apprehension about applying, Emma-Jay took the plunge in December after seeing last year’s final. The application involved answering

several questions and sending three photos of herself, and despite her lack of confidence, she was delighted to be given the Mrs Bristol Curve 2018 title by the judging panel. This led to her also being awarded the title of Mrs England Curve 2018 earlier this year. Emma-Jay now has her sights set on winning the British Beauty Curve title at the finals on August 4 and the Mrs International Curve title at the finals on October 20. As part of the British Beauty Curve final, she will take part in three rounds: a ‘glitz and glam’ round where she has to pick an outfit of her own choice, a swimwear round, and an evening wear round where she will wear a floor-length dress and will be judged on her poise and elegance. Points are awarded for each round, and Emma-Jay will have her friends and family in the audience for support. The

Mrs England Curve 2018 'Despicable' attack international final will be more of a black tie event, and she will also take part in a traditional wear round. However, as England doesn’t necessarily have a traditional style of dress, she says she has yet to decide what type of outfit she’ll wear. Outside her roles as Mrs Bristol and England Curve 2018, Emma-Jay works in customer services for Motability in Frenchay and also dances as part of the Showgirl Academy, a Bristol-based dance company that teaches different dance styles from their studio in Kingswood. Speaking about her achievements to date, EmmaJay said: “It really feels like a whirlwind. Back in December when I initially submitted my application for Miss British Beauty Curve, I didn’t expect to get anywhere or hear back, but now the ball is really rolling! It’s very exciting, and it feels

like I get to step into this totally different world. “Since being given the two titles, I have a massive opportunity to get involved in charity work and campaigns that promote body confidence such as ‘#FAB’ and ‘I’m A Queen’. I think it’s so important to be positive about your body, and have good self esteem too. “My main message to any ladies reading this is never doubt that you are valuable and powerful, and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams. You are perfect just the way you are. Being yourself and being unique is what makes us all beautiful. Believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable!” To find out more about EmmaJay and to keep up to date with her progress in the upcoming finals, visit her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ MissBritishBeautyCurve2018

A SEXUAL assault on a 96-year-old woman as she waited for a bus in Staple Hill has been described by police as "despicable". The incident, which was only reported to police recently, happened at around 4.45pm on Wednesday January 31. The victim was on her own at the bus stop on Soundwell Road, Staple Hill near to the Portcullis pub when she was approached by a man thought to be in his late 50s. The man, who claimed to be from the former Republic of Yugoslavia, repeatedly touched the elderly woman inappropriately before eventually walking off in the direction of Downend. The victim described the man as being tanned, about 5ft 8ins, of large build with straight dark hair. He is also said to have a large face and big hands. He was wearing a navy anorak, navy jumper and black or dark coloured shoes with white soles which were possible trainers. He was also carrying a rucksack. Champions of the arts as well as sport - the performers of Blackhorse Primary School

School’s Annie show wows audiences “ABSOLUTELY sensational” was the Twitter review by one parent, “Amazing – ended up watching it three times!” was another; “The talent and effort demonstrated by the kids was astounding.” Said a third. These ‘rave’ reviews were prompted by Blackhorse Primary School’s Performing Arts Club’s production of the musical Annie, which wowed parents with the quality of the singing, dancing and acting. The cast, made up of children from across the school, had been practising twice a weeks since Christmas for a week-long run at the school just before Easter. And the cast wasn’t made up of children with stage experience, quite the opposite: Ellie, who played Annie, had

never really thought of herself as a singer before she was spotted busking with her ukulele in the playground just before Christmas. Ollie, who played Oliver Warbucks, is more used to the boxing ring than the stage (as an accomplished boxer and footballer) and had never sung solos in front of an audience. And Nathanial, whose performance of the evil Miss Hannigan was so convincing he made some Reception children cry during the dress-rehearsal, was so bitten by the acting bug that he’s joined a local theatre club! Headteacher, Simon Botten, said: “As a school we’ve always been good at sports but our governors set us the challenge of becoming equally excellent at music, dance and drama.

For the past three years we’ve therefore tried to offer many more opportunities in the arts with all children now receiving free professional music tuition in Years 1 to 5, and with a target of 50 per cent of children learning a musical instrument by 2020.” It appears that this drive to champion the arts has paid off. The show, the brainchild of Performing Arts Club producers Miss Sturge, Miss Daverson and Mrs Hayes, demonstrated just how far the school had come in developing excellent provision in the arts (a feature of the school’s curriculum which was also recognised in the school’s recent successful Ofsted inspection). Mr Botten added: “As well as fabulous children who will throw themselves whole-heartedly into

any challenge, we are incredibly lucky to have staff like Mrs Hayes, Miss Sturge and Miss Daverson (along with a great many staff who helped along the way) who have the drive, enthusiasm and specialist skill necessary to put on a show of this standard. We know that these are performances which the children will never forget and will give them the confidence to succeed across the curriculum.” The school’s Performing Arts team are already considering possibles for next year with Beauty and the Beast, Shrek and even Starlight Express on the shortlist. Wrestling melanoma and falling in love - Dr Mark's inspirational story A MUM has published the memoirs of her son who died from cancer at the age of 28. Mark Sims, a talented junior doctor, raised £100,000 for Cancer Research UK after blogging about his experiences of living with malignant melanoma. Since his death last January the fund has now reached more than £200,000 and it is hoped sales from the poignant book, entitled P.S. I have cancer, will boost the total even further. Mark, who attended John Cabot Academy, was 15 when he fought off skin cancer, caused by a genetic defect. The following 11 years Mark was healthy but a sudden stomach pain one morning led to the discovery of tumours in his liver, lung and spleen. During his two-year battle with cancer, Mark was determined to do everything he could to raise awareness of the illness so he could help others. Sadly Mark died on January 19, 2017, but lives on through his brutally honest and powerful blog, wrestlingmelanoma.com, which formed the basis of the book. Mark's mum Sue published the 312-page paperback through her company Poetry Space. Sue, who lives in Longwell Green with husband Chris, said: "Mark wrote the book in the last few months of his life based on the blog he kept throughout his illness and there's been some extra material added. "He asked me to publish it for him and, as I already publish poetry books, I was all set up to do that. I've had so many orders; it's been amazing."

Sue said: "I was editing the book while Mark was still alive but I never knew about the groom's speech he wrote. He said he wanted it in the book and also read out at his memorial service by his brother Matthew. That was heartbreaking." As well as paying tribute to Georgie, the speech thanks his parents for being an 'inspiration' to him and his brothers. Sue said: "The first time I read it was after Mark died so it was very touching. "I've been working with his words all year to correct grammar and to get the book perfect. I like working with his words; it brings him back. As well as being a story about Mark's illness, there's a

Chris and Sue Sims with the book about their doctor son Mark

Sue said: "Mark wanted to raise awareness of cancer generally and skin cancer in particular and also how you can still live a full life with cancer, as he managed to do." The book is subtitled 'wrestling melanoma and falling in love', and chronicles how Mark met Georgie Latcham, a medical student who has since qualified as a doctor. Sue said: "Mark met Georgie very soon after he was diagnosed. When the fundraising and blog took off he started to get invitations to talk about his illness. He contacted the University of Leicester, which is where he trained to be a doctor, and arranged to speak to medical students. Georgie was in the audience. She has since said that she'd already fallen in love with him from reading the blog and wanted to meet 'this amazing person'. They just hit it off straight away." Mark proposed to Georgie in January 2016 on the steps of the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Extract from Chapter 43: Of a Groom's speech 'A huge thank you to my mum and dad, you've both been an inspiration to Matt, Paul, Dave and me. Dad for your love of sport, exercise, hard work and for practical advice, Mum for your kind heart, creative attitude and your dedication to good writing and non-rhyming poetry. Thanks too Mum for your great roast dinners and pastry fish pies over the years.'

Hat trick of prizes for Bristol Starlight IT’S three cheers (and a lot more) for the Bristol Starlight cheerleaders who came away with a hat trick of prizes from a competition in Newport. Youngsters aged three to 11 attend the classes in Bromley Heath. The older competition squad, aged nine to 11, got first prize in their age group, won best pom routine out of all the pom groups taking part and gained the Spirit award for the first time. Deb Denny, who runs the squad, explained: “The Spirit award is always the last trophy of the day to be given out and it’s for the team who cheers and supports all the other teams the most – we’ve never won one of those before.” This month all three competition teams will be competing in Gloucester; for the majority of the children it will be their first competition. You can also see the cheerleaders perform at Frenchay Flower Show in July.

n TRAVEL

OVER the years, I've had the fortune to travel to Italy many times. In fact, it's one of the first holidays I remember taking as a young child. Although I could write about Italy into the early morning and beyond, I only have 500 words to capture the best for you. And as each city within Italy is vastly different, I'll also be concentrating on one destination in particular. Nope, it's not Venice, Florence, Pisa or even Rome, beautiful as these cities may be. Instead, I'm going to focus on Lake Garda, the largest of the three lakes in northern Italy. It was my 24th birthday - not exactly what you’d call a milestone - but I’d spent the months leading up to it deep in stress at work. A birthday treat and luxury vacation was calling out to me. And I definitely found luxury in Lake Garda. I’d chosen to stay at Casa dei Pescatori in an ancient town called Sirmione and opted for one of their

Seeking luxury in Lake Garda, Italy

Views of Lake Garda from the top of Monte Baldo in Malcesine deluxe suites. This afforded me lakeside views, my own balcony and a jacuzzi spa bath. During my stay, Spa Termale Aquaria was also calling my name and once again, I found luxury; this time in the shape of indoor and outdoor saunas, steam baths, experience showers and an intensive back massage. At this point, I should mention that my vacation wasn’t completely spent basking in self-care. In true globetrotter fashion, I made sure I visited the local sights, learned about the histories of the town and ventured to Malcesine on the northern part of the lake to take in the views from the top of Monte Baldo. These views really were sublime and some of the best I’ve seen in Europe. Sirmione itself has a fair amount to offer those of you who

are interested in Italian history. It’s said that the name Sirmione derives from the ancient Greek word “syrma” meaning tail or train, and from the Gallic words “sirm” and “ona” meaning aquatic hotel. There is also a royal connection to the town as Queen Ansa of Desiderio chose this area of Lake Garda to build a monastery for the Benedictines in the 8th century. Rocca Scaligera di Sirmione is a castle built by the Scaligeri of Verona and guards the only footbridge into the main town of ancient Sirmione. Although the castle is now just a shell of what it may have once looked like, the views from the top of the turrets are worth climbing the 146 steps for. And if you venture on further

into ancient Sirmione, you’ll find the Roman ruins of Grotte di Catullo beside the coastline. It’s a chance to once again step back in time and appreciate the wonders of the once dominant Roman empire. So although I went in search of simple luxury in Lake Garda, I found so much more. Ancient Italy’s beauties opened its arms to me and reaffirmed that I had been right to spend so much time exploring this incredible country. Dismay for families as nursery faces more delays PARENTS of toddlers in Lyde Green are being forced to wait even longer for the promised nursery facility to open in the estate, as a result of ongoing delays with the legal negotiations. The nursery building was initially due to be completed by Easter 2018, ready to be occupied in September 2018. However, concerns over nearby listed buildings and ground levels have caused some delays, meaning that the provider, Happy Days Nurseries, has not yet submitted a planning application. Rhiannon Powell recently moved to Lyde Green from Emersons Green with her two daughters, aged five and two. Her elder daughter attends Lyde Green Primary, and her younger daughter is due to start nursery next April. As she doesn’t drive, the delayed opening of the nursery in the estate is causing her concern. She told the Voice: “I have no other means of transport apart from foot, so really don’t know where I can send her and be able to do the primary school run as well. “I know a lot of other parents who have to send their little ones to nurseries out of the area, when it would be so much easier if there was a nursery facility in Lyde Green itself. I think that not having one is causing a negative impact on the community, as parents constantly have to juggle their children about. “I think the whole community would benefit greatly from having its own nursery facility and it would make many lives a lot easier!” Lyde Green Community Association is also disappointed about the lack of progress with the provision of the nursery in Lyde Green. Bob O’Brien, vice-chair, said: “We’ve raised the issue on a number of occasions and have emphasised the social and practical impact of the delays on our lives. We have taken steps to

Support for care leavers 1625 Independent People (1625ip) and South Gloucestershire Council have announced a partnership aimed at kick-starting the journeys into learning and employment of 200 young people leaving care. The initiative, Reboot West, will support young people to access work experience, jobs, apprenticeships and mentoring, and is calling on businesses across the South West to get involved. Reboot West is a partnership between 1625ip, four local authorities - South Gloucestershire Council, Bristol City Council, Bath & North East Somerset Council, North Somerset Council - and social investor Bridges Fund Management (Bridges). If you are interested in Reboot West, and how your business can get involved, email tim.wye@1625ip.co.uk

Waiting : Rhiannon Powell with her younger daughter hold those responsible to account and to make sure that promises made to us all are kept. “We’re hopeful that steps have been taken in the right direction but we’ll continue to press for progress and work with our partners to ensure that Lyde Green is a great place to live! If residents would like to get involved, then please get in touch by emailing lgcapartnership@ gmail.com.” A spokesman for Happy Days Nurseries said: “All parties are working together to get this moving forward; we’re excited that we’re almost there and as the occupier for the nursery we’re looking forward to having the opportunity to work in the community.” A spokesman for Emersons Green Urban Village said they are close to concluding legal negotiations and hope to make an announcement shortly.

Unique act of remembrance MORE than 140 Year 8 students from Downend School have been visiting the First World Ward battlefields 100 years after the end of the conflict. On one of the two trips, two students and a staff member recreated a photograph on display at the Bayenward trenches, close to Ypres. This was territory occupied by the Germans during the war. Each group of students spent three days visiting the trench systems and graveyards of both sides and attended a wreathlaying at the Menin Gate. Staff said they were proud of the interest shown by many students at the two museums visited. Like the soldiers a century ago, the students had to deal with challenging weather, including a rough crossing of the Channel. They also took the opportunity to defeat their teachers in a snowball fight in the trenches.

Wonders of science are so inspiring BARLEY Close Community Primary School welcomed scientists from UWE Bristol as part of National Science Week. Dr Gabriel came to talk about DNA, what it is, where to find it and how to extract it. Dr Sarah, a geologist and forensic scientist showed pupils how fossils can be found and what it is like to live in a volcano for six weeks! Dr Steph is a marine scientist and the children were excited to find out about her two-month research project in the oceans around South America. Finally children found out how science helps the police with a talk from a forensic scientist. Head teacher Jo Williams said the children had been hugely inspired by the scientists and the visitors had been impressed by the pupils' enthusiams and excitement and by the questions they asked.

Apology over bin collections A SERIES of missed rubbish and recycling collections have caused frustration in Lyde Green. Locals have used the Lyde Green Local Facebook page to voice their annoyance after collections were missed across the estate for several weeks, as well raising concerns about the mess that is left by the bin collectors. Some collections were missed because of snow, and others as a result of road works around Rowan Drive. Residents complained of collections being missed despite reporting them on several occasions, rubbish blowing over the street and not being picked up by refuse teams and the large green recycling bins for some flats never being emptied. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “We are aware of some issues with collections in the Lyde Green area and we are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. We are working with SUEZ, our contractor, to resolve this. As the Lyde Green development is still being built, we have had some issues gaining access to a few roads on the scheduled collection day. “Waste collections in Lyde Green should be on a Wednesday and we will be in the area to help resolve any problems and address any concerns over litter.” Residents should report any missed collections through the council’s website at www.southglos.go.uk/report or call the contact centre on 01454 868000 as soon as possible after their collection day.

n ON THE BEAT

What to do if you're worried about ASB CALLS about anti-social behaviour (ASB) on the beat have reduced from last summer’s peak, but we know that this issue tends to increase in warmer weather and during school holidays. We’re still getting calls about problems with groups of teenagers causing damage, setting fires, fighting, using foul language, nuisance motorbikes and throwing things at people and vehicles. As we’ve explained before ASB covers a wide range of issues including noisy neighbours, inconsiderate vehicle use, littering, damage and rowdy or drunken behaviour. Because of this we, South Gloucestershire Council and housing providers all have powers to deal with different aspects of it, and we work closely together in order to make sure we can all enjoy our community spaces and feel safe in our homes.

We always need evidence to take action, so please report issues as they happen, with as much information about the person responsible as you can give. Although we might not always be able to attend immediately, we can build a picture of what’s happening, where and when, enabling us to target our response and bid for resources. You can download an incident diary and find more information on reporting ASB from www. avonandsomerset.police.uk or www.southglos.gov.uk Young people often get blamed for ASB. We’re continuing to tackle those who cause issues, but remember most just want to meet their friends. Parents and carers can help to keep their children safe and out of trouble by making sure they know where they are and who they’re with. PC James Rochford

RESIDENTS in Emersons Green and Lyde Green have got together to make their areas cleaner and tidier places to live. In Emersons Green, Noel Hiorns and Claire Stone decided to organise a litter pick on Saturday March 10. Noel said: “When I saw the new Emersons Green Facebook group, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know some more of the people living on the estate, to strengthen the local sense of community and belonging, while at the same time doing something really positive for the local area. I think people should be proud of where they live, such that they want to look after it and encourage others to do the same.” During the litter pick, a total of 20 people helped clear the bushes and footpath along Cousins Way and the area by the stream that runs under the road next to Blackhorse Garage. In total, 11 bags were filled with recycling and a similar amount with rubbish, and over 200 glass bottles were picked up.

The Lyde Green litter pickers

Collectors also removed car number plates, lots of sweet wrappers, crisp packets and plastic bottles, a large home improvements advertising sign, polystyrene, car head rests, solar

garden lights, batteries, shoes, a rucksack and blue Ikea bags. Lyde Green Community Association and Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch also organised a litter pick on

Saturday March 17, where 29 bags were filled by over 20 volunteers. Ten of the bags were collected from the footpath by the bridge over to Emersons Green Retail Park.

23 Lots of different types of litter was picked up over two hours such as cigarette butts and little pieces of sweet wrappers and crisp packets, as well as cans, milk bottles and cardboard for recycling. A huge metal pole was also found in addition to a lot of building debris such as insulation, dumped roadwork signs and cones, bits of wood and metal work. The organisers of the litter pick reported anything that was inaccessible to estate management company GreenSquare and the South Gloucestershire Council Streetcare team for collection. Councillor Sadik Al-Hassan from Emersons Green Town Council was one of the volunteers in Lyde Green. He said: “It is so important to help protect the environment that we live in for our children and the wildlife in the area. Rubbish building up on the estate is an eyesore that we have to do something about. I am so impressed with local residents like Cate Biggs who have taken their time to make a difference by organising an event like this.

n COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

n NEWS

Big Spring Clean 2018 It was Big Spring Clean time in Lyde Green in March. This now annual event is an opportunity to get out, blow off the cobwebs and tidy up litter that has appeared. We love the community coming together and joined Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch and the new Lyde Green Open Space group to pull this event together. It was great that residents supported this on and around the day, and with a bit of community spirit and elbow grease we all managed to make a difference to the area – huge thanks to everyone who got involved! Important Data Changes Many will know that new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into force across Europe in May. This gives all individuals greater control over their personal data. We’ve been working hard to upgrade all our systems to ensure they meet the new requirements. It’s important to

us that you have full control over your data and can make choices over what information you receive from us. We’ve recently asked everyone who is a member, or on our mailing list, to “refresh” their consent for us to contact them and remain a member. These discoveries are now in the safe hands of the experts, and once they have been studied they will be displayed in the museum in Bristol to add to our knowledge of the history of the area. We’ll let you know when we hear more details about the exhibit. Community Centre update We’re still busily working behind the scenes to secure the handover of the Community Centre. Thanks to everyone for their supportive patience, and we are looking forward to having some positive news, and putting all our plans and preparations into action. Dig deep for community allotment MANGOTSFIELD School has created a community allotment and is appealing for equipment and support. Students plan to plant potatoes and herbs and also aim to recycle plastic bottles to make a bottle greenhouse. Fundraising activities including a cake sale and a raffle are being organised to raise money for equipment. The biggest expense will be a fence to protect the area. The school is also looking for unwanted garden items such as old decking to make raised beds, water butts, forks, spades, pots, string, cable ties, old paving slabs and compost bins. The first “community dig” has already taken place - look out for details of the next one. If you can help, please contact Mrs J Poole at the school.

n PETER'S VISION THE book ‘I Can Read with My Eyes Shut’ was apparently written after children’s writer Dr Seuss started to need glasses to help his failing eye sight. He has been quoted many times from this book (which he dedicated to his eye specialist). I like his encouragement to his readers, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”. Good advice, but suppose you find reading difficult, what then? Well if the issue you have is just that your arms are not quite long enough anymore then come see us and we can fix you up with a pair of glasses to bring your close vision back into sharp focus. If, as for many of our younger patients, you just find reading a challenge & chore rather than a pleasure then you should come and see us as well! I read an interesting article recently. The author was writing about children & young people who either find reading more difficult than they should or have a reading ability lower than expected. Of interest was that the author reported that three quarters

Words in focus (that’s a lot!) of those with reading difficulties had passed a normal sight test as they had good sight, but still had difficulty reading. What’s this all about you may say? Well to those in the know, vision is about so much more than just sight. Seeing and identifying a few letters on the wall chart or reading card is not always a great indicator of actual visual performance & reading ability. The author goes on to say that when they gave each of these patients with reading difficulties a complete binocular vision assessment they found many had binocular vision problems or visual stress; to quote a colleague ‘eyes that were just not friends!’ So if you, or a (young) person you know finds reading more difficult than it should be what next? May I present our eye exam (NHS funded if U16). This is more in-depth that a standard sight test, and while not a full binocular vision assessment, we can certainly

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Hot cross buns ... and the bread of life WHO’D have thought back in 2010 that so many people would become fascinated by a baking competition and terms such as ‘soggy bottom’ would enter the nations vocabulary. Every week amateur bakers work tireless sieving and folding and mixing and proving and then sitting in front of a glass oven door to see whether their creation rise. Part of the ‘entertainment’ is seeing the successes but also the failures, as cakes implode or creations collapse. On a baking tangent, I was interested to hear last month that due to a shortage of dried fruit and berries (not Mary of course!) that hot cross buns, Christmas cake and mince pies would gradually become more expensive. Not a happy prospect in our house.

Taking a further tangent – hot cross buns, hot or cold? Mince pies, hot or cold? When I was a boy, many years ago now, on a Sunday afternoon my mum might do some baking and would make rock cakes. When placed on the table my brother and I would tip the table to give the impression that they were made out of rock – sad I know! In many churches across the world on Easter Sunday the minister will make the affirmation – ‘He is Risen’ – and the congregation will respond – He is Risen Indeed. Our collective faith affirming that Jesus, who was crucified on Good Friday, has risen from the dead. John 3:16, ‘For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal

life’. The true cost of Easter – not the rising costs of raisins. Following his resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples, including a time by the side of the lake where his friends (disciples) were fishing. As they bring their catch to the shore, in John chapter 21 we read that Jesus had baked some bread and cooked some fish for his friends. Whilst they were eating, Jesus speaks to Peter, named by Jesus as ‘the rock’ on which he would build his church, and asks him 3 times, ‘Do you love me?’ The Risen Jesus asks us the same question today – Do you love me? What is our response to Jesus who in John 6:35 says “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “Those who come to me will never be hungry; those who believe in me will never be thirsty.“

Grease is the word at John Cabot Academy STUDENTS at John Cabot Academy put on their own spectacular version of Grease for their annual production. More than ninety students from Years 7 to 11 auditioned for the hotly contested parts, with 50 making it through the final audition and into the cast. Stars of the all-singing, alldancing musical, set in California 1959, included Charley Adams, Year 10, as greaser Danny Zuko and Annabelle Grant, Year 11, as new student Sandy Olsson. The show, about teens in love, also featured members of the gang the T-Birds, a gang of black leather jacket-wearing greasers, and the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-jacket wearing girls led by Rizzo. The musical was supported by an impressive live five-piece student band consisting of Year 11s and a Year 10 student. Lights and sound was managed by Mr Bridges and Mr Kennedy and their technical team of Key Stage 3 students.

The production has been more than four months in rehearsal, with students giving up time in their holiday and after school. The show ran for three sellout nights and had the audience dancing in the aisles to hits from the show that included ‘You’re the one that I want’ and ‘Greased Lightning’. Emily Grainger, drama teacher and Charlotte Grierson, music teacher, said: "This was our first joint production and we have been really overwhelmed by the amount of students that wanted to get involved. We are very proud of their hard work, commitment and achievement in putting on this amazing production. A big thank you must also go to staff and parents who have supported us in the process. Grease is the word!” The T-Birds and Pink Ladies

also performed segments from the show to Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cottrell.

They sang hits, acted scenes and undertook a Q&A with pupils at the school.

Salute to our quiet community heroes

A SCOUT leader and a school governor were among the unsung heroes honoured at the annual South Gloucestershire Council Chair’s Community Awards. The annual awards recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make to life in the district. Simon Budd, group scout leader at the 67th Scout Group for many years, and John Smith, a governor at Staple Hill Primary School for two decades were some of nearly 30 people recognised at this year’s event at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s WISE campus. Simon is also chairman of Mangotsfield Festival and an active leader at Emersons Green Baptist Church as well as a volunteer at a food ban cares deeply about staff wellbeing and provides a friendly face to the school’s leaders. He gives two days each week to reading with children who have fallen behind, need extra practice or perhaps do not have the opportunity to read at home. For some children, their time with John is a highlight of the week. One nine-year-old pupil said: “He is very generous giving up his time for lots John and his wife, Eileen, have been very supportive and active at many school events.

Their thoughtfulness and kindness for the children is much appreciated by the school staff. Arwa Said, headteacher, said “John has helped our school in so many ways with his cheerful, patient manner and he always gets us smiling! We all agree that he is most deserving to be recognised with this special award.” Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, CoIan Blair attended the celebration

event along with the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Dame Janet Trotter and Vice Lord Lieutenant Robert Bernays, Group Chief Executive & Executive Principal of South Gloucestershire & Stroud College Kevin Hamblin and Principal and Deputy Chief Sara-Jane Watkins. Award winners were presented with their certificates by Cllr Blair and Sara-Jane Watkins.

Royal double for Warmley Park's water sports crew MEETING a member of the royal family is something many people never experience in their lifetime. But for students at Warmley Park School it seems to be a regular occurrence. For not only did they rub shoulders with Princess Anne, just weeks later they said hello to Prince Edward. Students from the special school for pupils aged from three to 19 with learning difficulties and additional needs met both royal family members when they visited All-Aboard Watersports Centre on Bristol Harbourside. All-Aboard provides opportunities for all members of the community, regardless of ability, age or background, to take part in a wide range of water sports on the historic docks. Princess Anne, who is president of the Royal Yachting Association, visited in January to help celebrate the charity’s fifth anniversary. As well as launching a new powerboat called Andiamo, she also had great fun when she started a canoe race between children from Warmley Park School and Elmlea School in Westbury-on-Trym. The youngsters, who demonstrated great team skills during the race, were awarded their certificates by the Princess Royal. The following month her brother, Prince Edward, also met youngsters from Warmley Park when he paid a visit to the charity. The Earl of Wessex popped in to the centre in his capacity as Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme Ambassador, taking

over the role from his father, Prince Philip, who recently stepped down from royal engagements. Students from Warmley Park were invited to meet the prince after they spent several weeks with the centre before a two-day paddling expedition on the River Wye as part of their bronze DofE Award Scheme. n WORLD BOOK DAY FANTASY fiction novel Shadow Magic has been chosen as the 2018 winner of South Gloucestershire’s Concorde Book Award. Author Sarwat Chadda, writing under the pseudonym Joshua Khan, beat off competition from five other young people’s fiction titles to claim the literature prize. Students from Mangotsfield and Downend Schools, other secondary schools and library reading groups read their way through the shortlisted titles. Votes were cast on World Book Day and the winner was announced at a gala event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park at Emersons Green. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Ian Blair presented the award. He said: “I’m thrilled to have been involved with the Concorde Book Award this year. Congratulations to all the young people who have taken part, their enthusiasm and love for reading really is inspiring. My thanks go to South Gloucestershire’s libraries and schools who have worked together to organise this award, which celebrates young people’s reading and gives young people a stage to share their interests and achievements. Finally, congratulations to author Sarwat Chadda for his well-deserved win.” The awards event saw a number of young people give presentations about their favourite books and conduct interviews with the shortlisted authors who attended. The shortlisted authors also each nominated an item to go in to ‘Room 101’ and the students voted for the winner. Five members of the school

library group represented Mangotsfield School at the event. They were Jess Dando, Billie Edwards, Mia Johnson, Erica Weeks and Evie Westbrook. The Concorde Book Award is a long-running ‘young people’s Booker’ run by South Gloucestershire schools and public libraries in which groups of young people read a shortlist of novels. They are then encouraged to join a reading group, whether at school or in a local library, to read six books and talk about them with other group members,

before voting on their favourite title. The scheme aims to promote a love of reading among 11-14 year olds (Year 7 to 9 secondary school students, Key Stage 3), and thousands of young people have taken part since it was launched in 2007. The other shortlisted titles were Generation Next by Oli White; More of Me by Kathryn Evans; Scarlett and Ivy: The Lost Twin by Sophie Cleverly; The Bone Sparrow’by Zana Fraillon; and Time Travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford.

Helping school-gate mums return to work TWO Bromley Heath mums have solved the issue of combining work and childcare by setting up their own recruitment agency. Cathy Knight, 37, and Gemma Smye, 36, both found that their high-level jobs at national agencies weren’t flexible enough to fit around family life after they each had two children. Instead they have founded Isme Recruitment to serve professional businesses across Bristol and the surrounding area. Being their own boss allows them both to fit in school runs to Bromley Heath Infant and Junior schools, as well as attending school plays and sports days, around supporting their business clients and job candidates. Cathy, who already has daughters Ivy, four, and Edie, one, with a third daughter due in June, said the pair’s own experience of flexible working helped them understand the needs of their clients. She said: "We know exactly what it’s like to have

commitments as a parent and the need for a career that can be combined with that. "In fact the very first person we found a new job for was another mum we got talking to at the school gates." Cathy, originally from Frampton Cotterell, became friends with Gemma while they were both at The Ridings High School in Winterbourne, now Winterbourne Academy. They have remained friends ever since, even working together at recruitment agency Adecco for several years. Between them they have amassed more than 30 years of recruitment experience and plan to bring their knowledge to their new business. Gemma, who is mother to Esme, eight, and Annie, five, grew up in Mangotsfield and returned to the area after a stint working in recruitment in Australia. She said: "The advantage Isme Recruitment has is,

Thule Top Box & Bar stockists For Sale or Hire service available

Bromley Heath mums Gemma Smye and Cathy Knight unlike a big agency where the job of finding and vetting job candidates is left to junior staff, we have two very experienced management-level people and meet with every client. It means we get a great idea of whether they’ll fit into the organisation that is looking, so the business doesn’t waste time interviewing unsuitable people. "We can also be more flexible than a business that works a standard nine to five. We’ve met potential candidates in the evenings or weekends, so they don’t have to take any time off from their current job." Isme Recruitment – the name comes from combining the pair’s eldest daughters’ names – is concentrating on providing staff for professional businesses, such as financial services, marketing, HR and IT. Vicki Finch, from Charlton Hayes, has been one of the first people to find a job through Isme, taking up a part-time

role to work around parenting commitments. Vicki, who has been placed in a job as an insurance advisor at Glentworth in Bristol, said: "I was nervous as I hadn’t done anything like that for a long time but Cathy made me feel comfortable instantly and was 100 per cent professional and friendly. She let me know what to expect at the interview stage and made me comfortable when going to meet my potential new employer. The new job is a great reflection of my skills and she paired me well, putting me forward for the role and being successful with getting the job." Cathy said the way people search for jobs had changed in the digital age, but there was still no substitute for actually getting out and meeting people. She said: "When my daughter asks what my job is, my answer is simple. 'Mummy helps people to change their lives by finding them the right job'."

n BOWLS

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE Just keep moving ... Blog 49: Tackling back pain RESEARCH released to mark Chiropractic Awareness Week (9 – 15 April), has found that nearly half (47%) of people in the South West of England are currently experiencing back or neck pain. There has also been a notable rise in the number of people aged 3140 in the region experiencing back and neck pain. The research, which was carried out by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), found that for sufferers in the South West, the top triggers for this pain were:: • Lifting or carrying heavy objects (60%) • Sitting for long periods of time (52%), and; • Poor posture (35%) The BCA’s research findings align with what I see at Cleve Chiropractic on a day to day basis, however it’s particularly interesting that lifting and carrying was the most cited trigger for neck and back pain. It really highlights the importance of maintaining a strong and active body that can move well and cope with the demands you are making of it. For those of you in Bristol who are finding that sedentary lifestyles and sitting for long periods of time are causing you a problem, I would encourage that you make a change. We are designed to move and if you hold your body in any position for an extended period of time, it is likely you will feel pain. I find that patients are increasingly reporting sedentary lifestyles and work lives that have them sat at their desk all day, so to help prevent back and neck pain occurring in these patients, there are a number of simple exercises and small changes I recommend are incorporated into your daily

Get out on the green

routine. For example, shrugging and circling your shoulders whilst sitting and taking the stairs are easy ways to improve your back health - these may sound simple but I know from my patients that they really work! My top tips to help Bristol to prevent and manage neck and back pain are: Take a break: When sitting for long periods of time, ensure you stand up and move around every 30 minutes. When at work, also make sure your desk is set up to support a comfortable position. This is different for everyone so if you don’t feel comfortable in your current set up, try altering the height of your chair or screen. Keep on moving: Physical activity can be beneficial for managing back pain, however it’s important that if this is of a moderate to high intensity that you warm up and down properly to get your body ready to move! If a previous injury is causing you pain, adapt your exercise or seek some advice. Activities such as swimming, walking or yoga can be less demanding on your body while keeping you mobile! Other things to bear in mind are: Lifting and carrying: Remember to bend from the knees, not the waist when lifting heavy items. Face in the direction of movement, and take your time. Hold the object as close to your body as possible, and where you can avoid carrying objects which are too heavy to manage alone, ask for help or use the necessary equipment. Sleep comfortably: The Sleep Council recommends buying a new mattress at least every 7 years.

Mattresses lose their support over time, so if you can feel the springs through your mattress, or the mattress is no longer level, your mattress is no longer providing the support you need. Everyone has different support requirements, so when purchasing your mattress ensure it is supportive for you. If you share a bed and require different mattress types, consider two single mattresses which are designed to be joined together. Straighten Up!: The BCA has created a programme of 3-minute exercises, Straighten Up UK, which can be slotted in to your daily schedule to help prevent back pain by promoting movement, balance, strength and flexibility in the spine All of us at Cleve Chiropractic recommend that, if you are experiencing pain for more than a few days you should seek professional help. When needed we can assess you and help to get you moving again without pain.

SIX years after getting their first taste of cricket through Frenchay Cricket Club’s Chance to Shine programme, two girls travelled to Sri Lanka with the Gloucestershire U17 squad. Georgie Hunt and Molly Bliss, both 15, progressed through the Frenchay and Gloucestershire county age group squads, and Their performances earned the girls the opportunity to fly over 5000 miles to play as part of the ten-day 2018 bottlegreen Gloucestershire tour. They played at the Pallekele International Stadium, a venue that has hosted six Test Matches. Georgie went to Frenchay CE Primary and now attends Mangotsfield School, and Molly was at Bromley Heath Juniors before going on to Winterbourne Academy,
