Carlington association meets to consider contentious project Steph Willems

EMC news - A contentious development proposal on Fisher Avenue was the subject of a members-only meeting of the Carlington Community Association on April 3. The six-storey condo proposed for 110 Fisher Ave. would require a significant rezoning in order to be built, and neighbouring residents would like to see the application rejected by the city. In a neighbourhood that doesn’t see the amount of infill and intensification experienced in other areas of the city, the proposal has caused significant outcry. In response to these concerns, the association’s board met on March 17 to plan its response, organizing the April 3 meeting and unanimously passing a motion stating their opposition to the proposed rezoning. The association had earlier succeeded in having the comment period for the application extended from March 18 to April 12, in order to have time to properly gauge the building’s potential impact and collect community feedback. Community crafts Laroche Park vision Steph Willems

steph.willems@metroland.com

EMC news - Mechanicsville residents met for a brainstorming session on April 6, breaking into working groups to figure out the best ways of improving Laroche Park. The expansive park, a neighbourhood centerpiece that will bridge two communities once the Bayview Yards redevelopment begins, is the focus of a visioning exercise organized by the Mechanicsville Com-

munity Association. Unlike other park brainstorming sessions, in this case the community has resources at its disposal to make the changes it wants. Developer Richcraft Homes is pledging a portion of improvement money towards the park as part of its legal obligations following the recent approval of a 30-storey residential tower on Parkdale Avenue. The exact amount of money allocated from Section 37 and cash-in-lieu-of-parkland funds

shack and boards for the ice rink are in poor shape as well.” McCrae said after the attendees at the weekend meeting broke off into groups, “all four tables stood up and said, if not the same thing, then things that were very consistent.” Before brainstorming, residents compiled a list of things the park is currently used for – good and bad – before looking at what they’d like to see added. that can be brought to bear on the park is somewhat hazy at this point, though the association is confident the number will be in the six-figure range. Residents at the meeting had a lot of upgrades to consider, as the park has seen few improvements in recent years. “It’s been a long time,” said association secretary James McCrae when asked if he recalled the last large investment in Laroche Park. “The splash pad is 20 years old, and the fieldhouse is pre-1950.
