the sport when he opened the Team Blackburn centre in 2001, but he came out of retirement in 2008, shortly after Maduk joined him and set her sights on a world title. Now he’s fighting against martial artists closer in age to Maduk, who is in her last year as a junior.
News - If it’s approved in the city’s 2014 budget, the Shefford and Montreal road intersection will be getting a major overhaul, said Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney. “There’s always been a traffic problem on Shefford hill… that is a very well known issue” Tierney said. “You can get stuck for three lights trying to get up the hill.” Especially during the morning rush hour, turning from Shefford Road onto Montreal Road can take a long time. It’s further complicated because it isn’t clearly indicated which turning lane vehicles need to be in to access the highway, though the on-ramp is almost immediately after the intersection. That causes a jam right after the turn, sometimes mid-intersection, because drivers are stopped as they try to merge to reach the highway on-ramp. A recent traffic study said the intersection is below standard and can be improved, Tierney said. The city’s annual budget allows for several intersection modifications every year. “It’s pending approval, but I feel very confident because it’s within the budget envelope,” the councillor said. He said the modifications will completely change the intersection by aligning the north and south sides of the road, and extend turning lanes. There will also be modifications to the light cycles to address peak traffic periods, like early morning and evenings between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. when traffic is heavy because of nearby soccer fields.

Maduk, 17, has been training with him since 2007, though she started training at the age of three, joining her older brother and father at a west-end studio. She moved to a Blackburn
Hamlet centre when she set her goals on world championships as a pre-teen. And it worked – they both qualified for the 2011 world championship in New Zealand, where she won a world title in her second-degree black belt weight class for junior women in patterns, and a silver medal in sparring.
