Plumbing work at Bayshore Public School in March, April suspected Nevil Hunt nevil.hunt@metroland.com

EMC news - Multiple tests have found levels of lead in the drinking water at Bayshore Public School that are 60 times what is considered acceptable. In addition, some of the plumbing work that is suspected as a possible source of the contamination has been carried out at other schools across the Ottawa public board, although no other school’s has been found with unhealthy amounts of lead. Students have been stopped from drinking any of the water at Bayshore Public School since May 23, when a test result showed 626 micrograms of lead per litre of water. The acceptable level is 10 micrograms per litre. It’s not clear how long students may have been drinking water contaminated with high levels of lead. A possible cause mentioned on the school’s website was described as “recent work on

the plumbing.” A spokeswoman for the school board replied to a request for information by email. Sharlene Hunter said a new design of water fountain was installed at the school in early March. A clothes washer was installed in April. PLUMBING CHANGES

The same type of drinking fountain – a design that includes a faucet to fill water bottles – has been installed in other schools in the public board, possibly using the same installation materials and methods as the fountain at the Bayshore school. Health Canada says leadbased solder on plumbing pipes can introduce lead to a water system. Hunter said the water-bottle filling stations have been installed in 146 of the board’s 147 elementary and secondary schools. See LEAD, page 3

EMC news - Melanie McCann recently finished in seventh place at another World

Cup competition in China, her best-ever result in modern pentathlon. While she has to work hard on all five events – pistol shooting, epee fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, show jumping and three-km crosscountry running – McCann said she’s put in a lot of work on swimming and running over the winter. Several weeks ago, she recorded a ninth-place finish in Hungary at a World Cup event.

McCann’s previous top finish in a World Cup event was 15th, something she’d recorded three times. Heading into the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the 22-year-old said her placing gives her a lot of confidence. “It means that whatever my coaches and I have been doing over the winter has obviously been working,” she said. “We can just keep moving forward without changing a lot on the training end of things.” McCann, originally from

Mount Carmel, Ont., returned to Canada after a week of fencing training in Paris, where she worked on some 0412.R0011347046
