Motorcycle ride aims to help empower children

In Ottawa, there is a group of guardians dedicated to making sure every child grows up great.

The Guardian of the Children Ottawa Chapter is a group of motorcycle riders who have dedicated their time to helping children.

President of the club, Sean “Superman” Leach, said he and about 11 other members started the chapter in April 2016 to stand up for children who may be being abused, bullied, or suffering from parental alienation.

Chef Kenton Leier pours broth into a heated pan, something he’s done countless times over his long career, but never before inside the warehouse at the Ottawa Food Bank.

The executive chef of the Westin Ottawa served up a healthy cooking lesson to students from Ottawa Technical Secondary School as part of a new initiative designed to teach young people about the needs of food bank clients and what they can do to boost their own nutrition.

“People need to know how to cook,” said Nick Lahan, 17, an Alta Vista-area resident who is in Grade 11 at the school in Castle Heights.

It was his first time visiting the Ottawa Food Bank, and the opportunity on May 17 also allowed the students to pitch in to help unload 6,000 boxes of Catelli pasta.

The company makes the major donation every year, but this was the first time students were brought in to help and also watch a cooking demonstration.

The experience proved eye opening for Nick and his peers.

“It’s very important to give to the people because I know it costs so much money to cook for one family, and some people can’t do that (without the help of the food bank,” he said. “It’s a good place to come for food and feed their children and themselves.”

As the students looked on, Leier walked them through the steps of creating a soup made with trout, leeks, asparagus and pasta — all ingredients that food bank clients have access too. The organization feeds 41,540 people in Ottawa each month, and almost 50 per cent of the food that is distributed is fresh, including meat, dairy and vegetables.

Leier developed the recipe based on ingredients selected by Westboro-based dietician Debora Sloan. Both were chosen to create a healthy and inexpensive dish for an online recipe book sponsored

by Catelli Foods.

As well, the value of teaching kids to cook means passing on important skills, such as making wise ingredient choices.

“They can see how easy it is to make something, and how you can stretch out a meal that can feed a lot of people,” Sloan said.

Leier has passed on his cooking expertise to students before when he was taught food demonstration classes at Algonquin College from 2006 to 2011. But this was his first time doing a demo at the food bank.

“I think it’s a great cause, and it’s chance for me as a chef to give back to the community to showcase, I think, a simple, healthy recipe that people can cook at home,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be everything out of a can.”

The cookbook they contributed to can be downloaded and shared for free.

For every download and share, Catelli Foods will donate a serving of pasta to food banks in Canada.

The company’s recent pasta donation to the Ottawa Food Bank is part of a national initiative, but bringing in local students to help unload the food is new and served as a chance for kids to see the food bank behind the scenes.

“The kids come to the food bank and learn a little about an organization in the community that is working to help people in need,” said Michael Maidment, executive director of the Ottawa Food Bank. “There’s a great value to having the kids here because we don’t do this in the education system anymore, we don’t really teach people how to prepare food anymore in the education system.”

Bringing in students every year for a cooking lesson to coincide with Catelli’s annual donation would be a welcome addition.

“I like having the students be part of it,” Maidment said. “I hope we keep doing it.”

Province could axe OMB, replace with tribunal

Councillors will have to get better at deal making if the package of reforms to the land use planning appeal system at the provincial level goes through, said College Coun. Rick Chiarelli.

“We have to be more creative without the guillotine of the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) there to focus us,” he said. “Councillors won’t be able to vote against something they know will be overturned at the OMB just to get applause.”

The proposed reform, announced May 16, by Attorney General Yasir Naqvi, will be a more streamlined approach that lends a hand to residents and places more importance on planning decisions by the municipal government.

The Ontario Municipal Board would be replaced with the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal.

The reform would also eliminate lengthy and costly “de novo” hearings for the majority of planning appeals.

Mayor Jim Watson, who was minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs from 2007

to 2010, said reform of the process has been a long time coming.

“When I was minister, I would sign official plans and often times before the ink was dry there’d be an appeal,” he

said, adding that pretty much every “ask” the city had for the reform is included in the government’s proposal.

“One of the things is the effort on the part of the province is more density around transit oriented development, as a result of billions of dollars of investment,” Naqvi said. “Developments would be protected or shielded to protect density around those zones, as opposed to get into the kinds of disputes we often see at the OMB.” Sheila Perry, president of the Federation of Community Associations, said the change is a good-news story.

“To make a challenge to the OMB is quite daunting,” she said. “You have to have a planner and a lawyer, which is no small expense for a community

association.”

While most people were in favour of the move to a tribunal system that’s less adversarial, Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper said he saw one red flag.

The package of reforms includes a piece that would prohibit appeals of development within 500 metres of a major transit station.

Transit-oriented development would essentially be insulated.

Naqvi said that’s because transit receives investment from all levels of government and the province wants to ensure success by promoting intensification around transit centres.

Leiper said he worries the area will become the “wild west.”

The most recent example is the approval of a 22-storey building on Scott Street, at the former Trailhead site.

“I know that the height in the current community design plan wasn’t going to go ahead, but we could have come up with something that is a better transition,” Leiper said.

But overall, Leiper said, the changes will be good new for residents, and keep land use decisions in the hands of the people who have to live with the decisions.

“There’s definitely more responsibility on the part of councillors to ensure good planning decisions,” he said.

Guardians of the Children Ottawa hosts ride, party to raise money for kids in need Continued from page 1

“It’s a Catch-22,” he said. “This is the reason why it works. The perception of bikers is not always a good one. But for kids, we are cool. So we can help.”

The guardians have partnered with CHEO and work with the Ottawa Bullying Coalition, school boards, teachers, therapists, and councillors.

“We are still fairly new and so many people are not aware of our presence in the community, so we do

everything we can to get exposure,” Leach continued.

One of those ways the group is reaching out is a motorcycle ride planned for June 10.

The ride, Empower the Children Motorcycle Ride in Ottawa, will run from Kanata Recreational Centre to Petrie Island.

“There are many rides that take place every weekend throughout the year, many of which are generally held outside the city,” Leach said.

“Our ride will not only be held in the city, but ride directly through it.

We want to raise awareness for child

abuse and bullying — what better way to get the communities attention than by having 100-plus motorcycles all riding together through the city?”

The ride finishes at Petrie Island, where there will be a free barbecue, music, silent auction, and a 50/50 draw.

There will be lots of activities for children, including a balloon toss and possibly a dunk tank.

Riders who are looking to participate can contact the group at gocottawa@outlook.com. Registration for the ride costs $25.

“That was way to easy!”

All the money donated goes straight to the children, Leach said.

“We do not even use the money that is donated to us to fund our events. The $20 you donate goes back to the children and teens in our community 100 per cent.”

The group doesn’t even use any funds that are donated to fund the organization’s expenses — its members do that.

The funds they acquire, Leach said, pay for things like counselling or therapy that the child or teen may need, or are used to pay for a child or teen to take part in an after-school

activity — even, at times, used to pay a medical or dental bill.

“We want the community to know that their donations go to what they are donating to the kids,” he said.

Aside from monetary donations, the group also accepts toys, clothing, and necessities.

“We may not change the world, but you can change that child or teen’s world,” he said. “Bottom line is, it means the world to these kids that there is someone out there that will speak up for them and be there for them when they feel no one else is.”

Connected to your community

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

L

eadership in politics is what energizes and motivates people and engages them in the political process. But while good leadership excites, bad leadership discourages.

And we have seen recent cases that have covered this spectrum.

Let’s call it The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, with apologies to the 1966 spaghetti western starring Clint Eastwood.

“The Good,” obviously, is federal Conservative Party interim leader Rona Ambrose, who has announced she is leaving politics. She guided the party to something of a rebirth after its disheartening defeat in the last election. After a relatively mediocre stint as a cabinet minister under former prime minister Stephen Harper one might have wondered about her leadership qualities, but over her term as interim leader she has rebuilt the party into a formidable and respected opposition. She has done this, we would suggest, with dignity, poise, intelligence and integrity. She has demonstrated what leadership should be all about.

Compare this with “The Bad” and “The Ugly.”

“The Bad” is Liberal defence minister Harjit Sajjan, who not once but twice took credit for mil-

itary planning in Afghanistan that he simply did not do. That much is pretty clear. What is not clear is why Sajjan, a respected and decorated soldier in Afghanistan, did this? By way of explanation, he said that he had “made a mistake in describing his role.” Really? He may describe it as a “mistake;” others might term it downright lying. But what is truly disappointing in this situation is that the minister did not have the integrity to resign from his position. That’s why he merits “The Bad” label.

And as for “The Ugly,” the Mike Duffy episode was bad enough, lowering the public’s esteem for the Senate immensely. But now comes Senator Don Meredith, who used his position to pursue an inappropriate sexual relationship with a very young woman. The Senate’s ethics committee called his behaviour “one of the most egregious breaches” by a senator of what is expected. It called for his expulsion from the Senate, the first time that would happen.

The senator avoided this by eventually resigning, ending this “ugly, ugly” situation. So, there you have it. “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.”

And some wonder why so many get turned off of politics these days.

Airline travel certainly no walk in the clouds

T

here seems to be no shortage of news stories about people getting kicked off airplanes.

Typically, people get on an airplane, the airline discovers that there are not enough seats, and then determines that a particular passenger, along with his family, should leave the flight in order for other passengers to board.

In the worst case (so far), the passengers booted off the plane were unseated in order to make room for airline employees. In a less-bad case, the passengers were booted off the plane because of what seemed to be a rather minor irregularity in ticketing.

In all cases, passengers were seriously inconvenienced, when not physically harmed.

In all cases, the airline apologized, sometimes belatedly, sometimes grudgingly, and announced that its primary concern was to serve the

For example, here is how Delta Air Lines ended its apology for kicking off an entire family, including an infant: “Delta's goal is to always work with customers in an attempt to find solutions to their travel issues.”

These stories resonate with us, because when we read them we realize that it could happen to us. Having passed through security, having waited and waited, having presented our boarding pass and our photo id., we could be safely in our assigned seat, breathing a sigh of relief when somebody from the airline comes along

and demands that we get off, for a reason that doesn’t even matter.

It could happen to us. And we are powerless to stop it. That’s what makes it worse — our powerlessness.

Powerlessness is part of the air travel experience for all of us. We dare not make a joke. We dare not question authority.

Because at any moment we could be singled out and denied the right to fly.

If we want to know what living in a totalitarian society is like, this is it.

There are nice airports in the world, and Ottawa’s is one of them, but the over-all impression of the flying experience is that we are treated like cattle.

In a largely free and largely democratic society, it is difficult to imagine other areas of life in which this is so.

In most places, if we are treated unfairly, arbitrarily, we object. We

argue. Someone in authority comes to talk it over with us. We might win the argument, we might lose it, but at least there is a discussion.

Not so in airline world.

The airline world has us over a barrel because we need to get on the plane, and will endure whatever mistreatment is on offer in order to do so. We will pay for things that we shouldn’t have to pay for (checked baggage, room for our knees), we will take off our belts and shoes, sit through unexplained delays and, it appears, look on without comment as our fellow passengers are chucked off the plane.

Fortunately, one thing aggrieved passengers can do is go to the news media.

Feminism has made access and choice possible

round Mother’s Day, I was asked by a friend why his wife seemed ultimately dissatisfied with her decision to take an extended career break to stay home and raise their kids for more than a decade. “I didn’t ask her to do it and I always said I’d support any decision she would make,” he said.

“Don’t take it personally,” I said.

“I have women friends who work fulltime, women friends who stay home full-time and those who try to do both the job of employee and mother parttime. Not one of us is satisfied.”

It was a fascinating realization for me to learn the truth of this through a continuous online conversation I’m having with three working mothers.

The working and mother parts are the only thing we all have in common.

One is a divorcee who parents two children full-time every second week.

One works full-time for a global company from home and manages the busy schedules of two children in competitive sport. One runs communications for a series of public organizations, has four children and tends to travel a lot for work.

I’m the hybrid, running my own business from my home office for years, while cutting my work day short to meet the school bus at 2:45 p.m. daily, (and generally overscheduling my kids in extracurriculars, even though I said I’d never do that).

Ottawa secures future Hard Rock Casino

A major employment hub will roll into Ottawa with the future transformation of the Rideau Carleton Raceway into the Hard Rock Casino Ottawa.

The plan calls for a multi-phase $320-million redevelopment and expansion of the current entertainment centre at 4837 Albion Rd. between Findlay Creek and Greely into a complex with a hotel, 2,000-seat concert venue, café and bar, merchandise shop, music and memorabilia displays and more than 13,000 square metres of gaming space with additional slot machines and table games, including a higher limit room, complete with butler service and hot towels, Hard Rock International chair Jim Allen announced May 15.

The proposal, which must work through the city’s planning approval process, could see the creation of 1,900 construction jobs and 2,000 direct and indirect ongoing jobs at the casino and horse track, which is a windfall in the eyes of Ottawa’s south-end councillors.

“It’s the milestone of the south end.

It’s a big deal,” said Osgoode Coun.

George Darouze, whose ward is home to the casino.

“Communities like Greely, Findlay Creek, Riverside South, Manotick, Osgoode — they suffer from unemployment,” said Darouze, who was

on hand for the announcement with officials from Hard Rock, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the city and the federal government.

“Every time you have to work or find a job, you have to drive to the city. It adds half an hour or an hour travel time.”

The rural south end has largely been passed up as a large-scale employment hub compared to the city’s east and west ends.

“The south has nothing,” Darouze said. “It’s going to have sustainability for jobs. This will help the economy in our community.”

Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt, who spoke at the event on behalf of Mayor Jim Watson, agreed that, while the current casino is already a large employer with 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, including those in horse racing and 500 full-time positions, the expansion will be a game changer.

Under the new agreement, current OLG employees at the raceway will work for Hard Rock for at least a year.

The casino will undergo renovations, including the creation of a new entrance later this year, and plans for the second-phase expansion are expected to be completed in late 2018 or early 2019.

“Within the long-term viability of whatever is on this site — a hotel, entertainment complex, a retail sector, restaurants — that offers jobs for the entire south end, whether you’re in Manotick or Greely or Metcalfe

The rebranded casino will also mean a larger annual cash windfall for the city, which last year garnered about $5 million based on a percentage of the centre’s operations. It is projected in the 2017 budget to receive $5.6 million, Moffatt said.

“As the facility grows we expect that the contribution to the city will grow with it,” said Stephen Rigby, president and chief executive of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Under the 20-year service agreement, Hard Rock International’s HR Ottawa, LP, owns 51 per cent of the enterprise following its selection by the OLG to take over day-to-day operations of OLG Slots this fall. RCR In-

vestor Inc., which is owned by Rideau Carleton Raceway Holdings, will keep a 49-per-cent stake in the partnership.

Though the Lac Leamy casino is just across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Allen said there is room for both based on population.

“There is no doubt the market is underserved,” he said, adding the Hard Rock Casino will be marketed as an entertainment destination and not just for gaming.

Horse racing will also continue to be a fixture at the centre, a sport that was in jeopardy as recently as five years ago. At one time, OLG sought to modernize gaming across the province by relocating racing facilities from rural areas to urban centres, Moffatt said.

“This is going to ensure the survivability of this iconic sport, which we

have, and that’s not an insignificant economic development on its own,” said Ottawa West-Nepean MP Bob Chiarelli, the federal minister of infrastructure.

“With this joint venture being at Rideau, horse racing’s got a much rosier future than it would have otherwise,” said Andrew Wright, a raceway director, whose father-in-law, Warren Armstrong, spearheaded the construction of the raceway, which opened in 1962. “With Hard Rock as a partner, you’re also looking at expanding the horse racing market.

“You can probably imagine the demographic is going to change considerably from what it is today to what it’s going to be in five years when you’ve got the Hard Rock entertainment facility up and running.”

The motion would have changed the 7 a.m. start time to 9 a.m. but was opposed by the Ottawa Construction Association and The National Capital Heavy Construction Association before it was even tabled.

John Devries with the construction association, said the vast majority of their workers are seasonal and reducing hours could put members at risk of not obtaining the number of hours needed to qualify for EI benefits in the off season.

Keith Egli, who chairs the transportation committee, asked if a change could impact the city’s promise that the redesign of Elgin Street in one construction season.

The answer from the delegation was that the city would have its “hands full” meeting the timeline.

Dale Harley, who represents the National Capital Heavy Construction Association, said the complaints over construction noise are minimal and reducing work hours would have an economic impact.

“You’re using a sledgehammer to kill a flea problem,” he said.

The staff report said there

were 63 complaints related to construction noise last year.

Roger Chapman, manager of bylaw services, said Ottawa is pretty restrictive in terms of what they allow for construction than other municipalities, which is why staff wasn’t recommending a reduction in hours.

But Nussbaum pointed out that Toronto only allows construction from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and doesn’t allow construction on statutory holidays.

“The motion is a modest approach,” he said, adding it’s time to consider construction noise in different parts of the city.

Even if the allowed time for construction was changed, companies could apply for an exemption – which already happens in some cases, said planning GM Stephen Willis.

Egli said modest motion or not, he wouldn’t support curtailing construction hours.

“Construction is nasty, noisy and dirty, but it’s necessary,” he said, adding he wouldn’t put a bylaw that’s simply “window dressing.”

College Coun. Rick Chiarelli said he thinks the motion is a misfire on what residents actually want when it comes to construction.

residents were determined to see what could be done to get the work completed as quickly as possible.

“If this had been in place it would’ve taken longer,” Chiarelli said. “We don’t want to be the council that takes three hours to rip off a bandied.

Chiarelli added it’s council’s job to support economic growth.

“Stepping in the way of construction isn’t the way,” he said.

The review uncovered that low-frequency or bass noise is the problem with a lot of complaints around house parties.

Now bylaw officers will have the ability to enforce low frequency noise, which wasn’t included in the bylaw before.

Ottawa Festivals representative Carole Anne Piccinin said the industry would have liked to be consulted on the changes.

“We only learned about the survey on the deadline day,” she said.

Chapman said festivals and venues shouldn’t be too concerned about the changes since 95 per cent of the calls are for noise in residential units.

Police and public health were consulted as part of the review.

More than 3,100 residents participated in the survey and inperson consultations.

Children under six will be forced out of city daycare programs

Changes to provincial legislation that deals with child care will leave some Ottawa families out in the cold, the city’s community and protective services committee heard on May 18.

The city operates several before-andafter-school programs, but aren’t licensed child care centres.

The province made changes to the legislation that deals with daycares — cracking down on unlicensed centres caring for the more vulnerable four- and five-year-old children.

The move was a response to the death of a child in Vaughan, Dan Chenier, the city’s general manager of recreation, said.

Committee chair Diane Deans said she understands the concern that prompted the changes, but feels the province cast “too wide a net.”

Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury said he remembers attending a similar program when he was younger. He feels the provincial legislation misses the mark.

The changes are on the way for the fall and will impact students under six.

Those will have to enrol in licensed programs, most likely extended-day programs at their schools.

Chenier said 104 kids won’t be returning to city programs in the fall because they’re too young.

In addition to young kids, other families will be impacted, as the city is no longer able to offer three hours of continuous care.

Chenier said that change means another 128 families will have to make a choice between before or after care.

“Or they’ll have to move to a licensed centre,” he said.

Barb Shantz, whose son goes to Castor Valley Elementary School, says the changes will mean daycare costs of $22 per day.

Fleury asked Chenier if there’s the potential for schools to lease space from the city to offer essentially the same programs as Ottawa offered before.

true, as the school boards move to reclaim space the city had been using, as they will be offering their own programs.

The city was hoping for an exemption from the province to be able to continue offering the program.

Chenier said with the advent of fullday kindergarten there was pressure to provide the service to four and five year olds.

But, with the absence of an exemption, getting a licence to be able to keep the four and five year olds isn’t an option, Chenier said.

“It would represent a 76 per cent increase in costs to the families,” Chenier said, adding that wouldn’t just be affected families — but everyone in the program.

In dollars that means a cost from $1,900 for the year to roughly $3,800 he said.

Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney said a number of her residents attend nearby Hintonburg Community Centre and will be impacted by the changes.

“Licensed care represents $300 a month,” she said.

While the province has pledged to offer a cash infusion in the form of subsidies, not everyone will qualify. The province’s subsidy system is income based and on a sliding scale. It doesn’t take into account the parents’ household expenses.

Deans asked if city staff are worried that children who won’t be able to access the program may end up staying home.

Chenier said staff will keep an eye out for a need.

“Some places are thinking of moving to a drop off or occasional model,” he said of other non-licensed recreation providers.

The city will still be able to offer fullday summer and PD day camps for four and five year olds. It’s something Deans said she was having trouble seeing the logic in.

Chenier said other than the occasional skinned knee, the city had no safety concerns while caring for the younger population.

The city runs 34 sites that offer before and after school care.

George Street Plaza The official opening of the redesigned George Street Plaza in the ByWard Market was on May 12th. It was celebrated with a ceremony put on by Mayor Jim Watson and Rideau Ward Councillor Mathieu Fleury. The infrastructural enhancements added in the renewal project include new concrete surfacing, a granite programming space, LED lighting, a mist feature, drinking fountains, a heritage clock and shade trees. Additional road work was also completed to improve the pedestrian experience in the Market.

Ottawa Race Weekend The annual Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend is taking place again on May 27 - 28th. Run Ottawa is the City’s most prominent running event of the year. Notice of Commencement Baseline Road Bus Rapid Transit Corridor (Bayshore Station to Heron Station) Planning and Environmental Assessment Study The Project The City of Ottawa is proposing to construct a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) facility between Bayshore Station and Heron Station. The corridor follows an alignment which includes Holly Acres Road, Richmond Road, Baseline Road, and Heron Road (Figure 1). Near the Baseline Station area, it travels via Constellation Drive, Navaho Drive, College Avenue and Woodroffe Avenue to link the Centrepointe community and Algonquin College campus. The project proposes dedicated bus-only lanes (generally in the median), 25 new transit stations and new pedestrian and cycling facilities along the length of the 14-km corridor. The project will incorporate all elements of a complete street while also maintaining the function of the road as an Arterial Road.

This project is part of the Rapid Transit and Transit Priority Network identified in the City’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) 2013 and connects to other existing and planned rapid transit corridors, including the West Transitway, the O-Train Confederation Line, the Southwest Transitway, the O-Train Trillium Line, and Southeast Transitway. The project will accommodate the anticipated growth in transit ridership as contemplated in the TMP and support the growth management policies identified in the City’s Official Plan (OP).

Hundreds of treasure hunts will converge on the Glebe on May 27 for the annual garage sale.

Great Glebe Garage Sale aims to keep unsold items from trash

As Ottawa’s biggest garage sale gets underway, there is one group determined to make sure nothing gets tossed in the garbage.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale will take place in the Glebe on May 27.

The annual event, organized by the Glebe Community Association (GCA), is a community-wide garage sale that sees hundreds of homes participate and thousands of bargain hunters come out.

As for the association’s environment committee, they will be watching what happens after the sale ends.

“What the environment committee of the GCA is trying to do with our environmental stewardship initiative is to channel the leftovers of the neighbourhood-wide garage sale to reuse and recycle opportunities,” said committee member Angela KellerHerzog.

The committee is providing the neighbourhood with a

drop-off donation map with community partners who are keen to receive the goods.

The drop-off locations are all within the neighbourhood and, as Keller-Herzog puts it, hopefully will help every unsold item find a new home.

“Ideally, very little of the stuff put out for the garage sale should end up in the garbage,” Keller-Herzog said.

HELPING HANDS

The neighbourhood garage sale, which started in 1986, has homeowners throughout the neighbourhood opting to sell their slightly- used wares.

As part of the event, the association asks that 10 per cent of any homeowner’s proceeds be donated to the Ottawa Food Bank.

This year, there will also be an effort to help out Ottawa Centre Refugee Action, a group that has helped settle 12 refugee families since December 2015 and is looking to help the relatives of those refugees also settle in Canada.

The goal is to help privately sponsor to bring eight families to Ottawa.

According to the organization, new arrivals can be more successful if they have family here in Canada — whether they are employed or not.

And so to bring these relatives to Canada, the group must gather more volunteers and raise close to $200,000.

To ramp up its fundraising efforts, and thanks to a partnership with the Great Glebe Garage Sale, the organization will host its own sale at 164 and 166 Glebe Ave. and is accepting donations for the sale on May 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. or 7 to 11 a.m. on May 27.

Other than donating to the sale, homeowners in the Glebe can sell at their home and donate to the organization — basically still offering the 10 per cent to the food bank, but donating the remaining 90 per cent to Ottawa Centre Refugee Action.

Chambers come together over protest of $15 minimum wage Special to the News

The Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, the Orléans Chamber of Commerce and the West Ottawa Board of Trade, in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) has sent a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne warning against potential changes to Ontario’s Labour Relations Act (LRA) and the Employment Standards Act (ESA), including

the introduction of a $15 minimum wage. The letter is cautioning that these reforms may have unintended consequences impacting job creation and competitiveness, as well as discouraging investment in the province.

The potential reforms are coming at a time when costs for consumers and the cost of doing business is high and putting Ontario at a competitive disadvantage. Ontario has experienced

slower growth in GDP and job creation than in the past, and drastic reforms to labour and employment run the risk of causing serious damage to the future prosperity of the province.

“These extensive changes could seriously impact job creation and the health of our local economy,” said the heads of the Chambers of Commerce in Ottawa. “We need to get the message out that the proposed changes

Brittany Drive Pumping Station Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA)

Revised Notice of Completion The City of Ottawa is planning a replacement of the existing Brittany Drive water pumping station located at 565 Brittany Drive with a new facility to serve the Montreal Road Pressure Zone.

The proposed new pumping station is required to provide water system capacity and reliability to the existing users and new development in the zone. The planning process for this project followed the requirements of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment and was completed in November 2005 as a Schedule B undertaking. The timing of the station replacement was connected to the former Rockcliffe CFB Redevelopment project which was delayed for several years. The City consequently also delayed the detailed design and construction of the new Brittany Drive Pumping Station.

perverse effect of discouraging investment and eliminating jobs, thereby diminishing economic opportunities in Ontario. Politics cannot drive decision-making, evidence must.”

On issues of non-standard and part-time work, Statistics Canada data shows that part-time work has risen 22 percent since 2003, down from the 36 percent increase in the previous 12-year period. Recent studies show that

76 percent of part-timer workers voluntarily choose part-time work to better accommodate schooling or personal life.

“We are urging Premier Wynne to complete an economic impact analysis of the proposed reforms to limit potential consequences that could seriously jeopardize our future growth,” said Richard Koroscil, Interim-President and CEO, Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

A Nepean family doctor is facing sexual assault charges STAFF

A family doctor who worked in the city’s west-end is facing multiple sexual assault charges.

The Ottawa police Sexual Assault and Child Abuse unit has charged Walid Al-Houssan, 56, with three counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference of a female under 16 and one count of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability.

The investigation started in 2016 and dates back to 2012. So far, three female complainants have been identified by police.

According to his registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Al-Houssan’s primary practice location is at the Sunrise Medical Centre on Merivale Road in Nepean. He also practices in Kemptville. He graduated from the University of Damascus in 1986, and has been a member of the Ontario College since October 2006. His specialty is family medicine.

Al-Houssan was scheduled to appear in court on May 18.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to call the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944.

Doors Open welcomes 39 new stops this year

There are more than 150 reasons to check out Doors Open Ottawa this year.

The annual city-run event is a free architectural event that celebrates the city’s built heritage.

On June 3-4, there will be 162 buildings with its doors open from Carp to Cumberland for visitors to explore.

“It was not hard to find 150 buildings,” said Amy Kudrinko, co-ordinator of Doors Open Ottawa. “Being that its Canada’s 150th we felt the interest. Everyone wanted to be involved.”

Of the 162 buildings this year, Kudrinko said 75 per cent of the buildings are past building participants, however she said they are always on the lookout for new interesting buildings that fit into the mandate of the event.

This year, thanks to Algonquin College students in the mobile application design and development course — there is a free app to help figure out which buildings visitors should check out.

Gerry Hurdle, the program co-ordinator for mobile application design and development course, said the app developed by the college can work as a key to figuring out which buildings to check out.

Hurdle said he was approached by the city in the summer of last year.

“I didn’t initially think it was an appropriate project for the students because of the timing,” Hurdle said of the app for Doors Open Ottawa — which happens June 3 and 4.

The course is a two-year program and is largely project based.

“I don’t do exams, I do projects, just like in real life,” Hurdle said.

Hurdle did think developing the app was a good learning opportunity, so he had students put together a showcase in December — at the close of the fall courses — and show their ideas to the city.

After that, he put together a team of students to work on the project.

An engineer-turned educator says she’s humbled to have received the prime minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

The award was handed out on May 3 and Sabrina Rehman from Little Scholars Montessori School in Barrhaven, was one of five recipients from across the country.

“You’re nominated by your friends and colleagues, so it was so wonderful just to be nominated,” Rehman said, adding the award may bear her name, but it really belongs to the school.

“What makes the school is the parents and all the educators,” said Rehman, whose twin, two-year-olds attend the

school.

Rehman grew up in Barrhaven and earned a degree in engineering from Carleton University.

It was working for a nongovernment organization in a developing country that made her think about shifting her focus.

“There was a huge focus on developing early learning,” Rehman said. “I realized that it has just as big of an impact as engineering. It’s just not as obvious.”

Not surprisingly, Rehman’s focus is science and technology.

She uses a STEM — based program, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and inquiry.

Montessori education is a philosophy originally coined by an Italian educator named

Maria Montessori. She originally developed her ideas working with children who had development delays.

In Barrhaven, Redman’s program has students classifying gems and rocks, preserving leaves and racing marbles.

When asked how the holistic approach works for the younger kids, since the school takes babies as young as a year old.

“For those kids it could be as simple as counting leaves on a walk,” Rehman said. “They still lead their own learning.

A class can be divided into different areas and they take turns on the items that interest them.”

In Rehman’s “maker space” students have designed and engineered creations like Rob the recycling robot.

CELEBRATING CANADA’S BIG DAY By: Mayor Jim Watson We have been working hard to bring Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations to the Nation’s Capital and kicked off 2017 by lighting up the Cauldron at City Hall and the Centennial Flame with a First Nations sacred fire.

Walk-In Bathtubs – What you need to know!

Are they safer?

First and foremost a walk-in bathtub can provide a senior with “safety”, greatly reducing the risk of falling while entering or exiting the bathtub. The side of a typical bathtub is 16 inches or more in height and 6 inches across, which can present a significant barrier to some people. This hydrotherapy can help with poor circulation by dilating blood vessels, while reducing inflammation and pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis and other conditions. Privacy & Convenience Walk-in bathtubs allow a senior to bathe in dignity, often without assistance, that might otherwise be necessary. It also spares them the necessity of sitting on an uncomfortable shower stool, while attempting to wash.

Most of these tubs include a retractable shower wand.

What about Installation?

Although these tubs can be installed in most homes, it’s recommended that you use an experienced walk-in tub installer that does it for a living, rather than a regular plumber.

What can I expect to pay?

Solutions start at around $2500 and can go as high as $15000 or more depending on what you want and whether or not installation is included.

What about Warranties?

Most manufacturers have what are called limited lifetime warranties that basically cover the tub itself. It’s best to have the installation done by the company you purchased the tub from, so that you are covered regardless of any issues concerning the manufacture or installation of the tub.

Where can I buy one?

You can buy walk-in tubs from a distributor right in your home or from one of the big box stores. The advantage of buying in home is that the representative can look at the bathroom where you want the tub installed to determine whether or not it can be done and what issues there may be. He/she will be able to answer all the questions right there on the spot. Big box stores will also sell you this product, often for less money, but generally carry imported products of lesser quality and you have to hire your own installer.

In summary Walk-in bathtubs allow seniors to stay in their homes longer and can have many health benefits, providing pain relief from arthritis, fibromyalgia and stiff aching joints. Walk-in tubs can allow some seniors to bathe alone again not having to depend on others for help.

“John Pestka’s executor and friend Patricia Pepper made the call to donate the legacy gift on John and wife Joan Pestka’s behalf,” the hospital foundation wrote in a press release. “She worked with

family and co-executors to cover the balance of the campaign through the estate, something everyone knew that John would have loved to do in life.”

Pepper presented the cheque to the hospital’s foundation during a celebratory breakfast with 200 guests and campaign supporters at the Brookstreet Hotel on May 15.

“It is a lovely story,” said Melanie Adams, president and CEO of the QCH Foundation, adding the event was a great way to celebrate and thank the unit’s donors and supporters.

here I sat, as I did every Sunday, in the same pew, in the same row, in the same church.

Only a calamity of the highest order would keep us away from the Lutheran Church in Northcote on a Sunday morning.

And it was always an ordeal for me.

Goodness knows, I tried my best to understand what the minister was talking about, but as usual, I had no idea what he was saying.

His very voice sent chills up my spine. I couldn’t understand why. When he came to visit, I wasn’t the least bit frightened of him, but everything changed when he came swooping down past our pew leading the choir.

Once the minister lumbered up to the pulpit, he paused, scanned the entire church, and I was absolutely sure when his eyes lit on me, he knew I was scared out of my wits. I wondered if my fright had something to do with his flowing robes, since my brother Emerson whose imagination was many notches above mine, said they reminded him of a huge black vulture getting ready to swoop down on us.

His voice thundered through the church, and his face got redder and redder. But I had to pay attention, because soon he would send us children off to Sunday School.

And the woman who taught us, it was rumoured, could recite the bible cover to cover, and she would be waiting for us, with her arms folded that she reminded me of a praying mantis.

She would ask us what the message was from the minister. And of course, I would have no idea. I would purposely go into a coughing fit in the hope she would bypass me and go onto one of the other poor souls waiting to be grilled on what it meant to be a Christian.

Thankfully the questions would end, and the teacher would begin the lesson, which had everything to do with being a better person.

And on she would go. And she always seemed to know when the last hymn was being sung upstairs, because she would tell us to bow our heads for the closing prayer.

Each of us would be given a little folded piece of shiny paper with a story printed inside, and always there was a picture of Jesus on the front page, which I loved, and which was far different from the one hanging in the church upstairs.

That day I was very quiet on the way home, as I tried to

luck suppers, and the oncea-year lawn social when we ran races, played ball, and ate home-made ice cream. And I decided, maybe I wasn’t a very nice person. Maybe no amount of praying would make me any better. And even though I had no idea what Father meant when he said it, but I wondered if that was my fate.

When someone did something just a bit off centre, or the news in the paper was doom and gloom, he would say, “the world is going straight to Hell in a basket.”

I wondered. Would that too be my fate?

Red Cross to provide flood victims with relief cash

Homeowners and tenants impacted by the historic flood of the Ottawa River can turn to the Canadian Red Cross for financial relief.

The organization announced May 18 that impacted households will each receive $600 via an electronic bank transfer within five to seven days of registering for the monetary help.

“We have approximately 1,600 households that we estimate at this time,” Tanya Elliott, vice-president of the Canadian Red Cross in Ontario, said of the number of households in Ontario that were affected by flooding in recent weeks.

The relief is thanks to more than $7 million Canadians have so far donated to the Red Cross spring flood fund. Donations specifically earmarked for Quebec have climbed to $5.3 million, and $2.1 million has been dedicated for other regions impacted in Canada.

“That continues to climb, and that money will be used to address the needs of those who are most vulnerable going forward,” Elliott said. She did not know when more money will be

“We’re very fortunate at Red Cross to see the generosity of Canadians time and again when disaster strikes either here or around the world,” she said in an interview with Metroland Media. “We’re very

grateful for that support because it enables us to provide the assistance that we do, both financially and also to ensure that we’re ready before disaster strikes.”

Those eligible to receive the $600 can use it however they wish to address their most urgent needs.

“That’s the key with this direct financial assistance in these early days,” Elliott said.

“A lot of people are transitioning back into their house right now as flood waters are receding and may have been out of home right now or have had a number of immediate needs for over a week now.

“So this allows a lot of people some flexibility to meet some of their unique and immediate needs right now.”

So far, the organization has provided temporary shelters, offered information at emergency centres and distributed cleanup kits and personal items. Red Cross volunteers have also been in a number of impacted communities assisting flood victims.

There is no set deadline for households to apply for the financial assistance, but the Red Cross is encouraging people to register for the funding as soon as possible.

To be eligible, residents must be a homeowner or tenant in Ontario or Quebec whose primary rented or owned residence has suffered water damage due to flooding between mid-April and mid-May. Red carpet rollout at Girls Night Out

Hospice Care Ottawa is rolling out the red carpet for its 11th annual Girls Night Out event on May 26.

The theme for the evening is “red carpet glam” and more than 600 women are expected to attend the fundraiser, which supports the non-profit’s palliative and end-of-life services.

“Girls Night Out is great and I take advantage of it to

bring together a great group of friends — enough to fill two tables,” said longtime supporter Shirley Greenberg. “It ranges from hilarious and enervating to just a super get-together.”

The fête features plenty of fun, beginning with a firefighter escort down the red carpet. It includes dinner, wine and dessert, a special gift, a live and silent auction, entertainment, dancing, a photo booth and more.

“It’s a fun way to spend a Friday evening with your girl-

friends,” said Susan McIntosh, manager of fund development at Hospice Care Ottawa. “Girls Night Out is a fabulous event that many ladies look forward to year after year.”

Phil Massad, with BMO Nesbitt Burns, has sponsored the event for the past two years after his family experienced the care provided by those with the organization. Although the event is ladies only, it’s his way of being able to give back, he said. “(It’s) my way of thanking

the dedicated staff and volunteers of Hospice Care Ottawa for the tremendous care and compassion shown to my aunt, and our entire family, during her final days at the May Court Hospice,” he said. “We are so fortunate as a community to have access to Hospice Care Ottawa’s services and programs.”
