The largest independent not-for-profit UK health and wellbeing organisation wins Health Investor Award Nuffield Health picked up the award for Private Hospital Group of the Year at the Health Investor Awards 2017. Teams battled it out at Canford School recently as part of the first Diverse Abilities’ Totally Wiped Out challenge event, raising funds for the local disability charity. Groups of fundraisers warmed up for the challenge by taking part in a dance off before taking to various obstacles, which included a punching wall, tricky trunks, the sweeper arm and some large inflatable red balls. Congratulations go to Keytek Locksmiths for beating stiff competition and taking home the first-place trophy. The money raised at this year’s Totally Wiped Out event will help the charity to continue supporting adults and children with disabilities across the county, to enable them to achieve their full potential. Victoria Parade at the top end of Winton opened on the 22nd January 1927. The centre piece of the parade of shops was the Victoria Super Cinema, The Ritz. It was the centre piece of a parade of shops known as Victoria Parade. The building was requisitioned at the outbreak of war and was used as an ARP store. It was not released for civilian use until 1948. It closed in 1950 for repair work to be carried out and reopened in October of that year. My own personal portfolio contains a mixture of normal rents and HMO’s (houses of multiple occupants). For example, we purchased a house in Poole at the beginning of the year. To rent to a family would have brought in around £1,000 per calendar month. We converted the house into 5 lettable rooms which now brings in a return of £2,500 pcm. I am proud to say Move On has won multiple Awards, I have a radio show I produce and present that is dedicated to the property industry and this column you are reading. The property industry is changing! On the lettings side we have over 150 new legislations that have come in alone over the last few years. The government is not our friend! Landlords will be facing bigger tax bills over the next 4 years. In the Queens speech recently, it was announced as an addition to banning tenant fees to also cap deposits - to be no more than the monthly rent. This will leave no money in the pot if the tenant does not pay the last months rent. Let alone alienate families with pets.

riginally from Hayling Island in Hampshire, Benjamin did most of his growing up in Italy and has spent a lot of time travelling to Barcelona where he picked up his keen eye for design.

Ben runs Human Kitchens based in Swanmore, with offices in West Sussex and the Test Valley. Ben has a successful career in Kitchen design and has worked some of the 'big names' in the UK kitchen industry. Human Kitchens specialise in bespoke, high quality, made to measure kitchens. Ben wanted to be able to offer top quality kitchens at the fraction of the cost, with excellent customer service. “There’s are a lot of customers who would use a high-street retailer to source their kitchen and find it difficult (if not impossible) to purchase the size and style they wanted, to fit their space. The materials could also be low quality, for instance, rather than being real oak it would be veneer.”

A kitchen fitter can fit a kitchen, but as soon as there is a slight curve in the wall or something is not quite right with the room, problems begin. A craftsman can make something wonderful out of that situation, as opposed to being stopped by it.”

The new Skoda Ocatvia vRS 245 is the most powerful vRS model ever available in the UK. Offering 245 PS (242 hp), it has a top speed of just 6.6 seconds. Available in hatch and estate forms, with sixspeed manual or a new sevenspeed DSG transmission, it is priced from £27,595. Says Skoda: “Thanks to the standard fitment of an electronically regulated limited-slip differential, drivers can fully exploit the car’s performance - even in challenging conditions. The VAQ limited-slip differential was originally developed for motorsport.” Externally, the vRS 245 is distinguished by striking 19-inch ‘Xtreme’ gloss black alloy wheels, gloss black front grille, door mirror housings and exhaust tailpipes. Inside, the vRS 245’s cabin features heated and electrically adjustable vRS sports seats trimmed in Alcantara and decorative trim panels finished in gloss black. The colour multifunction trip computer, located in the main instrument panel between the speedometer and rev counter, also includes a lap timer as standard. Other equipment highlights shared with the standard vRS range include Amundsen satellite navigation with eightinch display and integrated Wi-Fi, full LED headlights with adaptive front light system and LED daytime running lights, LED interior light pack (10 colours) and a Super sport three-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel with vRS logo and paddles for DSG-equipped models.

ROAD TEST: ISUZU D MAX BLADE DOUBLE CAB In recent years, sales of pick-ups have surged - especially in double-cab form as they can be tough workhorses one day and family transport the next. And as pick-ups are classed as light commercial vehicles, business users can reclaim the VAT, another significant benefit, writes NICK FLETCHER. There is plenty of pick-up choice and one of the leading contenders is the Isuzu D Max, available in single, extended and double cab form, with prices starting at £15,749 CV On The Road. Four-door double cabs are by far the most popular, and are very well equipped, with most of the features you would find on a family or even luxury car. My recent test model, a D Max in top-spec Blade trim had 4 power windows, remote locking, keyless entry and push button start, cruise control, climate control, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Auto Android for compatible smartphones, 9-inch multi-function screen, sat-nav, leather upholstery, front side and curtain airbags, 18-inch alloy wheels, and reversing camera among its kit – impressive in this class. With six-speed auto gearbox this model is £27,999 CV On The Road.

The latest D Max has a new 1.9 litre 162 hp diesel engine and has enough power to tow up to 3.5 tonnes and carry a 1.1 tonne payload. Fuel consumption is 36.3 mpg combined. Underway the D Max is civilised to drive and the autobox is refined and efficient with the changes. There is a little more engine noise than in some rivals but it is not really intrusive. Most pick-ups exhibit some pitch on the corners due to their higher centre of gravity and the D Max is no exception through it always feels fully under control, and ride quality on the tarmac is very good. From the outside, the D Max looks formidable, its tall wide stance dominant. Climb aboard and you find a simple, functional dashboard which is easy to use, including the touch screen functions. Piano-black inserts and leather upholstery boosts the interior look, and the seating is comfortable. The rear seats will take three occupants and the squabs fold upwards to boost cabin loadspace when not in use, a handy feature. There are also plenty of cubby-holes for oddments. This work/family/leisure versatility explains the boom in pickup sales in recent years, a trend which shows no signs of abating.

SUPERB EQUIPMENT UPGRADE ŠKODA has upgraded its Superb flagship range with extra features which include automatic emergency call as additional security, more comfort features, and extended connectivity solutions. Both saloon and estate versions of the Superb come with Care Connect as standard from Ambition trim upwards – regardless of the choice of infotainment system. Care Connect is an automatic emergency call feature which is activated following an accident if a restraint system has been triggered. The vehicle establishes a voice and data connection to an emergency call centre and transmits all the necessary data. The emergency call can also be initiated manually via a button in the roof module. In addition, remote access to the vehicle is now possible via the ŠKODA Connect App. The smartphone can inform the driver, among other things, whether the windows and doors are closed or the lights are off. The parking position function shows the location of the vehicle, the “Honk & Flash” function makes it easier to find the car by activating the horn and hazard lights. The display of the Columbus navigation system has grown from 8 to 9.2 inches and with the SmartLink+ system

now offers additional networking between the vehicle and smartphone. SmartLink+ brings navigation, infotainment and communication apps from the mobile phone into the car and also provides vehicle data for the evaluation on the smartphone. Other upgrades include Park Distance Control, driver´s seat with a massage function and improved occupant communication with voice amplication.

ASTON MARTIN NEW V8 ENGINE

ROAD TEST: SEAT LEON XCELLENCE TECHNOLOGY The SEAT Leon is smart sporty hatchback based on the architecture of its stablemate the VW Golf, and that is a very good starting point. The Golf is noted for its poised and agile chassis and sets class standards for build-integrity. SEAT takes those credentials and adds some stylish Spanish flair with a distinctly sporting edge, writes NICK FLETCHER. The Leon range includes a racy SC coupe and a practical estate but the big-seller is the five door hatch, which starts at £17,455. There is a wide choice of engines – 1.0 to 1.8 litre petrol units and 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesels. My test model was a 2.0 litre 148 hp diesel in upper range Xcellence Technology trim and priced at £23,830. Standard kit is extensive and highlights include auto lights and wipers, keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, 8-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, DAB radio/CD, and connectivity features, climate and cruise control, and rear parking sensors and useful smartphone charger pad. The Leon was re-vamped last year and has a subtle new look but its major plus-point is its superb driving

dynamics. It is quick, responsive, nimble, composed and has outstanding handling, an overall package very hard to beat in the sector. The 2.0 litre diesel in the test model delivered its power smoothly and eagerly, and the 6-speed gearshift was slick and precise, underlined by 0-60 mph time of just 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 134 mph. However, fuel economy is still exceptionally good – 72.4 mpg combined. The Leon has a sleek exterior which does pull some admiring glances and the revised cabin, which at a glance appearing unexceptional, it proves to be well thought out, with all the controls easy to find and use. Cabin space is very good, with generous room for four adults, wide rear doors for easy access and a big boot – 380 litres expandable to 1,210 litres with the rear seats folded. SEAT’s reputation for producing value for money models with a sporty persona is well established and this latest Leon dutifully upholds that with its engaging driving feel and charismatic presence.

Aston Martin’s DB11 GT is now available with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With 503 hp, the car reaches 60mph in 4.0 seconds and has a top speed of 187 mph. Fuel economy is 28.5mpg combined. It is priced from £144,900. Inside, both the new V8 and its V12 stablemate have the same standard equipment levels and the same choice of colour and trim options. They can also elect to enhance the specification of their car via the same Option Packs and Designer Specification packages. Aston Martin President and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said of the V8-engined DB11: “The DB11 is the most complete and sophisticated car Aston Martin has ever made. Now, with this new V8 engine option we have broadened its appeal by offering a car that will bring the DB11 to more customers around the world while still blessed with the exceptional performance and memorable character that sets Aston Martin apart from its rivals.”

NEW INSIGNIA SPORTS TOURER Vauxhall’s all-new Insignia Sports Tourer is on sale now priced from £18,685. It is based on a completely new vehicle architecture,is 200kg lighter than its predecessor and has larger capacity. Luggage volume has increased to 1,665 litres, 135 litres, more than the outgoing model. The length of the boot has grown by 97mm to 2005mm versus the previous model and 40/20/40 foldable seats are standard across the range. For those pulling a caravan or a trailer, towing capacity is now up to 2200kg. It has an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Many functions are controlled via the touchscreen to simplify the interface, while all functions have been grouped into three distinct sections to allow quick and intuitive operations: the upper ones for the major functions of the infotainment system, the central ones for climate and heating controls, and the lower ones for driver assistant controls. The engine range is the same as that for the hatchback version, a mix of 1.5 and 2.0-litre turbo petrols and 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels.

DOWN BY THE RIVER I thought they were joking: panna cotta made with seaweed? Surely River Cottage’s head forager John Wright’s in cahoots with head chef Gill Meller? Setting a room of novices - which includes me - up for a fall come the end of lunch, when we’d all have to dish up a salty sludge of sea green cream to celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Either that or we’re actually about to make two dishes, and they’d just jumbled up all the ingredients. But no - it turns out, as I discover by the end of the day, you really can use stewed, smooshed fronds of seaweed, strained through muslin, as a gelatin alternative to set a creamy panna cotta. It’s one of many interesting facts I glean during a foggy morning spent cooking, foraging and eating at River Cottage HQ, a picturesque farm and cookery school wedged in a valley on the DorsetDevon border. A rickety tractor ride takes us down to meet the River Cottage team, a group of food writers, experts and teachers, led by Fearnley-Whittingstall, who have put together a grand book, River Cottage A To Z, an opus containing more than 350 recipes, dedicated to their favourite ingredients - and it’s huge; the definition of a doorstopper, one that requires not insignificant bicep muscles to heft.

The book is a stunner, but it’s easy to become distracted when you’ve been shepherded into a yurt and are being plied with still warm tahini flatbreads and split pea hummus around a fire. You certainly don’t go hungry at River Cottage. Bellies almost full, Wright takes us on a tour of the grounds and kitchen garden, guiding us as we forage for herbs to flavour our desserts, knocking down sprays of musky elderflower with a staff when we can’t reach, telling us to get our noses into plants like lemon verbena and lavender, and to sniff scrunched up currant leaves. He even wades into a stream to pluck water mint leaves, and provides a running commentary on foraging misconceptions (“Don’t confuse elderflower with fool’s parsley, unless you want cordial tasting of cat wee”), recipe ideas (“Gooseberry fool is always a winner”) and drinking tips - his home-made grass vodka is particularly pungent when sipped at 11am on a Thursday, and smells very much like a horse stable. Thankfully, the vodka doesn’t knock my cookery skills too much, as lunch - two courses prepared by the River Cottage chefs (little gem and broad bean salad, followed by fragrant pork belly with noodles), and then dessert by me and my fellow novices - is still to go.

Perhaps it’s the sheer amount of enthusiasm that drives the place, which means that while putting seaweed in a pudding might be bamboozling at first, by the time you’re whisking it into shape and sticking it in the freezer, everything makes total, straightforward sense. Ingredients 300-400g ripe tomatoes (ideally a mix of varieties, including cherry tomatoes) 3tbsp olive or rapeseed oil, plus a little extra for the fish 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1tsp ground cumin, plus a little extra for the fish 2 large flounder (about 500g each), filleted Sea salt and black pepper Salad and fresh bread, to serve

Method Preheat the grill to high. Halve cherry tomatoes and cut larger varieties into 1cm slices. Lay the tomatoes out in a single layer on a large, shallow baking tray. Trickle over the oil, then scatter over the garlic and cumin and season generously with salt and pepper. Place the tomatoes under the grill and cook for 10-12 minutes until tender, juicy and lightly blistered, turning them carefully halfway through. Meanwhile, rub the flounder fillets with a little oil and season with salt and pepper and a pinch of cumin. Carefully nestle the fish, skin side up, among the grilled tomatoes. Return to the grill and cook for a further four to five minutes, or until the fish is just cooked through.

Roasted Chicory With Honey, Mustard & Thyme (Serves 4-6)

1kg piece free-range bone-in pork belly, cut from the thick end, skin scored 8-12 spring onions, trimmed, tops reserved 4 garlic cloves, sliced 1 finger-sized piece of root ginger, thinly sliced 1 medium-hot red chilli, roughly chopped A large bunch of coriander, stalks removed and reserved Zest of 1 large lime, plus some of the juice A pinch of sugar Tamari or soy sauce, to taste 2-3 nests of dried egg noodles (about 200g) A drop of rapeseed or sesame oil 200g cherry tomatoes Sea salt and black pepper

First remove the bones from the pork: starting in the thickest corner, use a sharp meat filleting knife to make a cut immediately under the ribs. Keeping the knife tight to the underside of the bones, work carefully and slowly down from the corner, gradually releasing the ribs from the meat until you can remove them, all in one piece. Cut between the bones to release the individual ribs.

Cook the pork for a further three hours. Add a little more water if you need to during cooking to stop the lovely juices from the pork burning.

Place these in a stockpot with the spring onion tops, garlic, ginger, chilli, coriander stems and lime zest. Pour over one litre of water and bring to a gentle simmer over a medium heat. Cook for one and a half hours.

Remove the pork from the oven and allow it to rest while you cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain, refresh under cold water, then drain again and toss with the tiniest drop of oil, just to stop them sticking together.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 220C/Fan 200C/Gas 7. Place the boned pork, skin side up, in a suitably sized roasting tin. Season it well with salt and pepper and cook in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes, or until the skin starts to blister. This is the beginning of your crackling - don’t be afraid to give the joint another five to 10 minutes at this high heat to get that blistering going (though do watch that the juices aren’t burning).

To serve, reheat the pork stock. Remove the crackling from the pork and snap it into pieces (you can give it a final blast under the grill if it’s not quite crisp enough). Quarter the tomatoes and slice the spring onions on the diagonal. Tear the pork roughly into pieces.

Now turn the heat down to 150C/Fan 130C/Gas 2 and add half a glass of water to the roasting tin.

Once the stock has simmered for long enough, pass it through a fine sieve into a clean pan. Season with salt, a good pinch of sugar, tamari or soy and lime juice to taste.

Divide the shredded pork between large warmed bowls and add the noodles, tomatoes and spring onions. Ladle the hot stock equally into the bowls, and finish with some pieces of crackling and a generous scattering of coriander leaves. 151

THE PAMPER LOUNGE A little you time Sometimes a girl needs to escape her routine, put aside all dependency from work and home and just indulge in a little ‘you time’. In our on-going pursuit to review Dorset’s greatest spas and salons, we visited power-duo and besties ‘Kim’ and ‘Rachel’ at their brand new salon ‘The Pamper Lounge’. Having both studied and worked in the industry for several years it had always been a dream of the girls to have their own salon. Tired of working within other salons, the girls stuck their heads together and started planning how they could turn their dream into a reality. Shortly after the initial discussion, a potential site became available – it was a sign. The girls rushed to see the abandoned store. Walking around the empty shell the girls could barely contain their excitement, they could see the buildings potential and how they could put their mark on it. Well, before they could say anymore the deeds had been signed and shortly all of the plans they had made were brought to life by Kim’s husband/handyman. It’s an inspiring story for all entrepreneurs out there; two girls who worked hard all of their life and it had finally paid off. We arrived at their Southbourne salon on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. Vicky and I could barely contain our excitement. We burst through the door only to find Kim and Rachel happily working away on the nails of some regular clients. The girls shot us a smile and invited us to get comfy whilst we

waited. Shortly after an array of coffee’s and glass bottled waters appeared, a welcomed extra special touch t. to a day of pampering. A sip or two later and it was time to get ready for our massage. Vicky and I were shown to their double treatment room (all the better for gossiping and idle girly chit chat). We whipped our gear off and slid into our own plush towel covered massage couches. Having finished their previous clients Kim and Rachel returned to begin our first treatment. The lights were dimmed and the tranquil sounds of and running water, chirping birds and gentle chimes played in the background soundtrack. A wave of serenity and calm washed over me as the warm oil was ever to gently applied to my back. It was divine. In the weeks before our salon visit, in an attempt to sculpt some form of ‘beach body’ I had been hitting the gym pretty hard, that, in addition to sitting at a desk 5 days a week had resulted in some serious tightness in and around my shoulders, but my knots were no match for Kim’s miracle-working hands. Massage isn’t about following a rulebook, a good masseuse will gauge what is needed based on the individual and that’s exactly what Kim did. She spent due care and attention working the tension out of my shoulders; no knot was left unraveled, yet I still left without feeling like I’d been kneaded like a pizza base. My partner in crime Vicky, a self-confessed massage-phobic also commented on how relaxed she felt post treatment.

An hour later, having worked my neck, back and legs the massage was over and it was time to pay attention to our paws and claws. After changing, the girls lead us to their nail stations where we each took a seat. We all had such a fantastic time laughing and chatting away and before I knew it I looked down to a full-set of gorgeous nail extensions. Beautifully shaped and the perfect length, I was so pleased! Rachel topped my talons with a healthy coat of blush pink and let the gel polish set. As a standard, whenever the girls are giving a nail treatment, gel is always the first given option, whilst they do stock some varnishes, they prefer to give customers a superior treatment at no extra cost. We left the salon feeling a million dollars. There’s nothing better than the feeling of stepping out, full of confidence and that’s exactly what we did with our total bill coming to no more than £50 you can sleep a little easier having not forked out hundreds to look and feel fabulous. FRANCO MANCA Humble, Authentic, Delicious. As Robin Leach once said, “In Italy, they add work and life, onto food and wine” - now THAT’S a philosophy a girl can get behind. We had been invited to an exclusive press evening, complete with pizza making and wine tasting, at the newly opened ‘Franco Manca’ – don’t mind if I do! Located in the once Debenhams menswear department is the new and shiny ‘Franco Manca’ the new ‘it’ pizza joint. Gone are the stacks of woolen jumpers and colourcoordinated socks and in its place are pendant lights, rustic wooden tables and industrial shelves filled with organic wine, chopped tomatoes and pickled artichokes. We scanned the room, our attention immediately being grabbed by their open kitchen. Three chefs were busily working away in front of a gargantuan stone pizza oven, a whirlwind of fast moving hands, flying dough and flour merged into one awe-inspiring vision. “Apperol Spritz?” came a voice from behind, a voice that was attached to a cheery looking man with a cocktail in the hand of an outstretched arm – well, when in Rome. A slug of delicious cocktail and an olive or two later our pizza maestro – Executive Chef ‘Alfonso Marseglia’ – popped up from behind the bustling hot plate. Adorned with a warming smile and a lulling Italian accident, he instantly made us feel at home, if not

somewhat in awe. One by one Alfonso lead us into the kitchen to make our very own pizzas, sharing secret hints and tips along the way, all of which washed over me like that 3rd cocktail I’d had. But despite a fear of shaming myself in front of the pros (and some minor inebriation – thank you bar team) I had such a fantastic time and my horizons had been broadened to a new and exciting way to make pizza. If you don’t know already, the theme is ‘sourdough pizza’. The key ingredient (in addition to talented chefs and insatiable passion) to making their dough is a live ingredient know to bakers as ‘Fresh Starter’; a porridge like substance containing organic flour, salt and cool or tepid water (depending on the room’s temperature). This is no simple task; this mixture is then left to prove for a couple of days, with regular supervision and feeding. The live (good) bacteria in this blend are what give their dough that signature flavour and wonderful elasticity. It has to be tried to be believed, but for me Franco Manca make the best pizza dough around. Having thoroughly embarrassed myself in the kitchen it was time to sit down and let the professionals do their thing. Despite today’s set feast, we took the opportunity to glance over their menu for future reference. To my

surprise their staple menu consists only of 6 pizzas, with the addition of some daily specials too. I flipped by placemat menu over to reveal a list of ingredients complete with origin, qualities and a ton of information on the seasonal produce that they use. These guys are diligent when it comes to their food philosophy. No aspect of their menu is left to chance. The culinary masterminds behind the brand spend a lot of time finding the best possible ingredients to top their signature dough. Never was this more evident then when taking my first bite of cured organic choritzo (No.6

on their menu), when the complex smokiness and rich meaty flavour totally took me by surprise. Paired with a sweep of tomato base and sparing amounts of Somerset mozzarella, each ingredient stood out on it’s own, whilst at the same time unifying in an explosion of complimentary flavours. In addition to this delicate meat feast, I also had the opportunity of trying their signature courgette pizza. Unlike most pizza’s this was without a tomato base, instead a creamy cheese enhanced sauce, topped with lashings of chargrilled courgette and yet more cheese – ricotta and parmesan – finished with a sprinkle of fresh basil, made for a seriously tasty, alternative pizza. Our experience was made complete with a wine tasting session, held by sommelier Francesco Cali. Much like the food, the drinks list is rich with organic, handpicked goodies. Two absolute must-tries include a deep rose (delivered straight from Francesco Cirelli’s organic farm in Italy) and an exciting and alternative sparkling red, the ‘Lambrusco (Grasparossa di Castelvetro)’. I could go on and on about this incredible chain. Their dedication to quality produce, along with a shared passion among all staff, makes this pizza place by far the best around.
