This issue we welcome renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen to HOUSE on page XXX, who talks us through her view on what makes the perfect sanctuary as well as sharing her top tips on interior design, meaning you can keep abreast of the latest trends.

We’ve also put together a mini-feature on plant pots on page XXX. This is a little soon to be project of mine and my two year old son as we take to the garden, with pots, seeds, compost and the very much loved watering can of his! The teams at Tanner & Tilley Town Planners and Bournecoast Property Agents are flying high at the moment after both their Managing Directors reached the final three of the Langtry Manor Business Women Awards. This is a proud achievement for both teams as it is the only

Spring is definitely here and since the last Ask The Expert article, we’ve been inundated with readers asking for tips on decorating with bright colours, using bold patterns and textures; and most importantly, how to make sure it’s done right. So, we’ve put together a few pointers for you. If you want more help from our team, just get in touch! Decorating with bright colours: 1. Create definition by combining the bright colours with plenty of natural ‘white space’ 2. Add an accent. Choose one dominant colour and then add in a standout accent. For example, team indigo walls with neutral tones and add a zesty yellow accent. 3. Pair bold prints with bright colours if you love the strong pattern-look out for geometric designs and oversized florals. 4. Brighten up for impact. Use the purest hue you can- no wishy-washy pastels. One hot pink cushion is more striking than a whole room in pale pink tones. 5. Get the right light. Bold colours really come alive under bright lights, so include pendant and task lights in your scheme. 6. Look at the colour wheel when planning a bright scheme, contrasting colours are a win win solution. 7. Try a new approach to decorating: Start with a painting you love and let it inspire a creative, characterful room .scheme.

9. The pattern rule, if you’re mixing patterns, use large with medium, or medium with small, never large with small. Choose prints and patterns with one colour in common, for a look that feels co-ordinated and not too matched. 10. Inside Kelly Hoppen's sanctuary Designer Kelly Hoppen opens the door to her glamorous home and gives her top tips on creating successful rooms.

Leading designers, especially those with celebrity clients who are also friends, usually guard their privacy with a zeal. But Kelly Hoppen has chosen to use her own home to demonstrate those highly successful techniques that have won her a host of famous fans, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Elton John. Her uber-luxurious sanctuary is a homage to her renowned 'East Meets West' style with its uncluttered, opulent rooms; a distinctive use of balance and symmetry, and trademark colour palette of neutrals, including her signature 'taupe' shade. "Each of the homes I have designed and lived in myself has been an on-going exercise an experiment if you like - where I have tried to understand how we see things, what gives us contentment and what we are really trying to achieve," she explains. Walls are finished in light-reflecting white waxed plaster, one of her favourite effects, and there are ebony-stained floorboards and glossy lacquered surfaces. "I have displayed more objects and used more furniture, texture and subtle contrast here than in any of my previous homes," she says. "It's a marked shift towards a feminine, luxurious, organic glamour in which I feel very

much at ease." The sophisticated, tranquil setting is the result of a painstaking renovation of her period home in London, during which she ensured the interior was perfectly tailored to suit her lifestyle. "Choosing your home's style is a similar process to choosing a piece of couture clothing - it should fit you like a glove," she says of the setting, which features in Kelly Hoppen Ideas, her new book that includes a foreword by Victoria Beckham describing Hoppen as "a very dear friend". Hoppen, who is as discreet about her clients as she is about her private life (her stepdaughter is film star Sienna Miller), says simply: "I think nowadays, whoever we are, we all want a nurturing retreat that feels safe, comfortable and easy to live in." Her own homes, she says, have always been characterised by an eclectic element - mixing vintage, contemporary, ultra-modern and antique styles. But whatever a person's taste, she insists, the guiding principle must be that "your home works for you and how you live, and in essence represents who you are". Follow Hoppen's room by room guide to creating a designer home.

Personal retreat Define how a bedroom will be used and consider whether it will also function as a dressing room and extra private lounging area, she says. In Hoppen's compact bedroom, a low, wide headboard and integrated bedside units help give an illusion of more space. "A bedroom is a treasured place, the ultimate comfort zone, and should be designed to please all your senses," says Hoppen. "It's your sanctuary and must be warm and inviting with lots of texture. My own bedroom is my hiding place and I've used a calm, taupe palette and concealed lighting to give the room a warm, seductive glow." Hoppen loves: Adjustable lighting which gives you the freedom to alter the atmosphere to suit mood, shutters that filter daylight softly and allow privacy, and fabrics such as linen, velvet and satin for a luxury look, plus a dressing table for jewellery and treasured possessions. A taupe scheme in the master bedroom is brought to life with a mix of textures; velvet, linen, silk and a shag pile carpet. Make a splash Adequate storage, a tranquil colour scheme, practical easy-clean surfaces and beautiful fittings are essential in a bathroom, says Hoppen. "My bathroom is an inner sanctum. She has a backlit floating marble wall behind the bath and concealed lighting behind the toilet and basin. Hoppen loves: Mixing two types of tile in the same tone of colour but in contrasting textures, such as reflective mosaic tiles in gold, silver, mirror or glass. Try using reflective milk glass (painted foil-backed reinforced glass) as an alternative to marble for floors and shower enclosures. A serene bathroom sanctuary has blackened oak boards, set into a milk glass floor, which mark a path to the bath.

Entertaining zone The dining area has its own character defined by a large oak farmhouse-style table which Hoppen designed. Hoppen loves: Maximising space with an island bar on double-sided central units, using reflective surfaces such as glossy lacquer or silky polished plaster and employing the colour taupe - a perfect neutral which creates an atmosphere of harmony and calm.

Kelly designed the oak dining table with its curvy edges, and the seating is benches upholstered in leather.

Lounging style Living rooms can be integrated into an open-plan design or be just as effective as a separate grand space, she says. Hoppen's spacious first-floor living room has a fireplace as its focal point and a chimney breast covered in a panel of black glass within which a television is set. "Always think about where the main seating will be, where the television will be be, to help you decide the layout," she advises. "A monochromatic palette fulfils my aim to make the room seem like a stunning black and white picture." Flooring, she advises, must be timeless - not a fashion statement - as it will be in place for a long time and expensive to change. Hoppen loves: Sheer curtains to filter natural light, black and white framed photographic prints and the impact of repetition in pieces of furniture and objects, such as a group of three tables or a pair of vases.

Entrance power Hallways are often, neglected areas in the home, says Hoppen, and can flag up personal style. In her hallway, recessed strip lights on either side of the treads and risers of the staircase make it appear to 'float.' The lighting also has the effect of appearing to widen the space. "Halls should impress as well as being practical. Whenever I come home, I look forward to experiencing the sense of wellbeing that my hall engenders," says Hoppen. Eye-catching features include a pair of Sixties zinc wall mirrors hung above a shelf displaying flower arrangements and tea lights. Hoppen loves: Full-height doors that run all the way up to the ceiling to increase a sense of space, as well as bespoke door handles and flooring and furnishings that echo the overall feel of the rest of the home.

Oak stairs in the hall are softened by a silk taupe carpet runner. Walls are in Hoppen's favourite finish, white waxed plaster created by Polidori Barbera, www.polidori-barbera.com.

Entertaining zone Kitchens are now as popular as dining and entertaining areas, and Hoppen has devised her own streamlined recipe for the space. In her home this area extends over the majority of the ground floor and incorporates a dining area leading on to the garden. "It's definitely the theatre at the heart of my home," she says. "To cook and entertain at home is now cool and I have a fireplace up on the wall like a painting, which is a focal point, and cosy in winter. "As I'm always hosting dinners and love having guests drinking and chatting whaile I cook, I wanted this to be an open and alluring space for friends to relax. "The island bar is where everyone gravitates - it's not only a 'chill and chat' zone, it's a place to work, read and have breakfast and so upholstered comfortable chairs are an essential."

May is one of my favourite months; the prospect of summer, the first flush of warm weather (boy, we have been spoilt already) and the social diary becomes even busier than usual. This year has felt particularly crazy with all the bank holidays thrown into the mix – you can see business people all over the place not sure whether they’re coming or going! I was extremely lucky to have picked a deliciously hot and sunny week to enjoy some of my old haunts in the motherland (Cornwall) that included a trip to Zennor with our smelly old surf dog, Zennor (as mentioned in a previous column). Not doing anything to support my fitness drive at all, we ate far too many cream teas and pasties. Scrummy. It’s good to know that the European Commission is now developing guidelines to protect the official recipe that makes a proper ‘Cornish Pasty‘ – nothing annoys me more than finding a rogue carrot or pea in my pasty! It does make me laugh though that the Cornish call a ‘turnip’ a ‘swede’ (they’re really quite different vegetables) making the guidelines really tricky for the EC. The upshot is that turnip can be listed in a pasty’s ingredients, yet it mustn’t contain any - it has to be swede! Simply bonkers……and I love it. Back at base, there are lots of lovely projects coming to a head that we at Liz Lean PR are working on, and they’re all very different, which keeps our lives more than interesting! First off, for fashionistas – Beales Bournemouth is about to host its third Spring Summer Girls Night Out fashion show in the store on 12th May. We love the buzz of this twice-yearly event; the reaction to the male models, the flowing fizz and the great discounts throughout the store. Heading to the Mac counter for a quick makeover starts the whole night off nicely. For animal lovers - a pair of Oriental small clawed otters are now basking in their waterside penthouse at the Oceanarium Bournemouth. From Saturday May 28 throughout the half-term holidays you can get involved with some otter themed entertainment, activities, talks and competitions. The otters are really cute and funny to watch – they juggle with rocks and pebbles and talk to each other in their own language of calls and noises; it’s been a real dream project. In stark contrast, and for those who like big boys’ toys, the very first custom bike show comes to the BIC on 28th and 29th May from 10am to 6pm. The Battistinis California Dreamin’ Expo is likely to make some noise as it comes to town – several ‘chapters’ of Harley-Davidson and custom bike owners from all over the UK are heading to Bournemouth over the Bank Holiday weekend, over one thousand motorcycles are expected to rock up! Imagine the roar? It’s going to turn heads that’s for sure. We’re most looking forward to seeing Evel Knievel’s original stunt bikes and memorabilia, their first appearance at a UK bike show. For my usual ‘blatant plug of the month’, I need to give credit to one of Wave 105’s presenters, Simon Clarke, for his ‘man up’ month of fundraising in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust (I bet he’d ride a Harley). Adding lighting to your garden gives a whole new dimension to the space. Suddenly the garden will come alive after dark and be a completely different space. Garden lighting is now regarded as a vital ingredient in the garden that we design for clients. Technology has made a great impact on garden lighting none more so than the development of LED lighting. Light Emitting Diode (LED) is the new technology sweeping through the lighting industry and is improving at an incredible rate with multi-billion investments from large companies such as Osram and Phillips. With this sort of backing then LED is certainly not a “flash in the pan” and is now commonplace in modern homes, shops, bars and restaurants. It is no longer just coloured decorative lighting but is also capable of replacing conventional white light sources such as Halogen and Fluorescent. LEDs tick all the boxes. They are the most efficient light source available at around 100 Lumens per Watt. So not only are they cheap to run they also run cooler than other lamps. The good quality ones have incredible life expectancy backed up by the manufacturer’s guarantees. A life time of 50,000 hours can be expected, this equates to over 17 years at 8 hours per day for commercial applications and 45 years at 3 hours per day for domestic. They are more expensive to buy but with

the above figures have a quick return on investment. In general terms they are 80% more efficient then Halogen and 50% more efficient than Fluorescent, so up to 80% off the lighting bill immediately for the user. Led-Zip have a 3 led floodlight producing 500 Lumens (enough to light an entrance or driveway) that costs just £1.50 a year to run at 8 hours a night, 365 days a year. They run on low voltages from 3-30 Volts so are safe to handle and work well in harsh environments. This makes them an ideal choice for garden designers. LEDs are based on Silicon chip (Diode) technology and it is possible to put red, green and blue diodes very close to each other or even on the same chip. What this means to you and I is that over a million colours are available from one lamp. Taking this a step further and incorporating DMX control allows designers to create fabulous landscapes of colour. DMX is widely used in the stage and theatre industry to control special effects and if you have seen the fireworks display in London on New Years Eve set to music then you have seen DMX in action. Led-Zip Lighting have a DMX controller that fits into a single switchbox and sends signals to the LED drivers dictating brightness and colour. Combining this with light sensors and proximity detectors gives Led-Zip scope to create some effects with an extra special touch. A recent garden project was programmed by Led-Zip so that the exterior lighting came on automatically at dusk and then slowly faded from one colour in to the next throughout the evening this then gently faded down to a low level white at midnight. Sensors were positioned so that anyone entering the garden would be detected and bring all the lights back on full brightness. The same system was programmed with an exit function, that when pressed, would give the occupants time to leave the premises as the garden slowly dimmed. On returning the sensors picked up their approach in the driveway and faded up the lighting to welcome them home – how cool! This same system has also been used on luxury yachts. Led-Zip Lighting have a full range of waterproof fittings in either single colour or colour changing and they are all made here in the UK. They come with a minimium of 3 years warranty and are fully repairable so when you buy a Led-Zip fitting you buy a “light for life” to use their slogan. Ben Shephard became one of the familiar faces that TV viewers woke up to when he hosted GMTV. Since it was taken off air, he has done various presenting stints, but is first and foremost a regular on Sky Sports. He's also a keen fundraiser, his most notable effort being that of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2009 for Comic Relief. Shephard is helping families have fun this Easter with Cadbury, the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland to promote Cadbury Easter Egg Trails across the UK. WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH CADBURY AT THE MOMENT? Cadbury's has got together with the National Trust to set up The National Trust, National Trust for Scotland and Cadbury Easter Egg Trails across, I think, 270 properties, where families can rock up to the properties and can go on these fantastic egg hunts over the Easter period. It's something I did last year with my family. My wife is a huge Agatha Christie fan and we went to Dartmouth, which is just an incredible place. And of course the boys, who were three and five at the time, the last thing they wanted to do was traipse around what they considered to be an old house, whereas for myself and my wife it was fascinating. But the great thing was that they had this added incentive of the Easter egg trail, so between us all, we got to wander around the house and the garden looking for these clues which they absolutely adored, as did Annie and I watching them enjoy it. HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING YOUR SHIFT TO THE SPORTING WORLD? It's been absolutely fascinating, really quite remarkable in terms of change; the pace of which I was living. My life revolved around my alarm clock before, getting up at half-past three in the morning. Now I do a Sunday morning programme, but I have to be in the office for 7am and that's a three-hour lie in! I get to wake up when my boys wake up, have breakfast with them and take them to school which is something that I rarely did before, if ever. As a young dad, I appreciate that immensely. I'm very lucky because I'm passionate about sport, I love my football and I'm now working in an environment where I get to work alongside legends of the game and within an industry that people really care about. DO YOU MISS THE NEWS PRESENTING? I miss the people that I worked with but I'm still very close with them - I saw Penny (Smith) the other day, I speak to Kate (Garraway) regularly and I spoke with Emma (Crosby) the other day. I'm in and out of ITV where the guys are now and it's always brilliant - if you wander past the pub on a Friday, you can usually find most of the crew have been in there since the show came off air and they're in very jolly spirits by the time I get in there! And that's great. I also miss the people that came on the show. Something I'm passionate is people. I have a real connection with them and enjoy interviewing people; no matter where they're from or their walk of life. People still talk about GMTV very, very fondly and that's lovely. WITH PIERS MORGAN IN THE US, THERE'S A BIG GAP IN SATURDAY NIGHT TV SCHEDULES FOR A CHAT SHOW - EVER FANCIED IT? I've talked about it a lot. It's something that I'm very passionate about, interviewing

people, and I think there's a real skill to getting the best out of people. I think there's a real trend for talk show hosts whereby the host is the entertainer. If you look at the likes of Graham Norton or Alan Carr, for example, they are the reason you watch, and the guests they have on become part of that show, whereas the sort of show that I love would be Parkinson or Michael Aspel's old show where it's very much all about the answers not the questions. It would be great to get the chance to do some more of that. The great thing for me is that I do a show called Goals On Sunday with Chris Kamara which is on Sky Sports and that's a football review show but we get these great guests, for example, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, and I get to interview them about their career. WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO INTERVIEW THAT YOU'VE YET TO COME ACROSS? I would love to interview some of the American politicians. I would love to meet Barack Obama because I think he's a pretty fascinating character. I'd also love to interview Gordon and Sarah Brown together, I think that would be really interesting. Gordon was one of the most fascinating people I got to interview at GMTV. When he was chancellor, he was an extraordinary character and then he became prime minister and suddenly he had to be a completely different person and it wasn't just enough to be great at his job - he had to be human and appeal to people as well. You could see the dramatic change; how he wasn't as comfortable being like that and I would love to interview them both now they're outside of the limelight. I'd love to interview sporting heroes of mine. I don't think anybody's had a real crack at getting to know Jonny Wilkinson - that'd be brilliant. I love interviewing Daniel Radcliffe - he's one of the most entertaining people I've met. GIVEN YOUR JOB, WHEN PEOPLE INTERVIEW YOU AND THE ROLE'S REVERSED, IS IT A STRANGE FEELING? Yeah, it always is - it's quite disarming! Believe me, I've been in many situations where you're interviewing people that aren't interested in being interviewed so there's a real understanding of what you're trying to get from an interview. I always think the best people who are interviewed are the ones who understand the tone of the programme they're appearing on and give you what you need. The likes of Will Smith, for example, he was always a pleasure to interview because he just got it. Equally there are people you interview who are not there to make things easy for you. I had an hour with Madonna in a hotel room - which is something I think I dreamed about as a kid - but it was absolutely brilliant. By the end of it, I'd really enjoyed the challenge because she's somebody who has achieved so much in her career and has done thousands and thousands of interviews and if you're not completely on your game, she lets you know.

YOU BECAME A BIT OF A DREAM TEAM WITH JENNI FALCONER IN YOUR ENTERTAINMENT TODAY DAYS, DO YOU STILL SEE MUCH OF HER? I see Jenni all the time. She's pregnant, which is so exciting. Jenni and I live very close to each other so we go running around the park. She's finally running at about my pace now she's pregnant because she's far too fit for my liking! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR? Well, this is the first time I've worked in sport so my summer holiday starts, in theory, when the football season ends. We've got the Champions League coming to an end towards end of May so we've got quarter-finals and semi-finals coming up so I'll be involved in that. There's the culmination of the Carling Nations Cup which I'm involved in, and then I'm hoping that we're going to get to America with the boys because they're the right age to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse now. I'm involved with some charity work with a friend as well. Last year, we ran across the country. This year, we're cycling one way, which is 145 miles and then running back the other way so we've got 290 miles to do in seven days at the end of July, for Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Children's Heart Unit Fund in Newcastle - that's our big mission in the summer. Before I know it, the football season will be starting again in August and we'll be back into the swing of things.

Nissan serious about electric car racing Nissan have released details of its first pure electric racing car - the Leaf Nismo RC prototype. It is a rear wheel drive racing prototype of Nissan's electric family hatchback the Leaf and is set to bring new meaning to the term 'racing green'. The 100 per cent electric racing car has a purpose-built carbon-fibre racing shell and its powertrain is a zero emission advanced lithium-ion battery design. In preliminary testing the NISMO RC produces 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 6.85 seconds and a top speed of 93 miles per hour. It is projected to have a running time of around 20 minutes under racing conditions.

Nissan is now looking at the racing world as a way to draw attention to the seemingly untapped potential of electric vehicles. "The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC will serve as a rolling laboratory for the accelerated development of EV and aerodynamic systems, as well as a platform for the development of new green motorsports series," said Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas. He added: "There's a perception among some people that electric vehicles fall on the dull side of the automotive enthusiasm scale. The Leaf Nismo RC will make its world debut at the New York Motor Show on April 20.

I have been lucky to have been regularly employed in my chosen career for almost half my life and enjoyed a regular income from it. It’s probably not as much as you might think a radio presenter earns but I have always been contented with my lot. But I have not really looked after my pennies as well as I should and it’s now during these days of austerity that I have started to feel a little remorse for not being more sensible with the wages I have earned over the years. One thing I have always been good at saving while shopping. The first “app” I bought for my iphone was one that shows you which shops near you are offering discount. You can then download a voucher which you redeem in store. At the supermarket I only multibuy on household items I know I will use and don’t get blinded by deals on foods and perishables. I read a statistic recently that showed 40% of all supermarket purchases are discounts sales like 2 for 1 or BOGOFF and a quick trip around the isles will leave you in no doubt that’s true. I used to laugh at a former colleague who (when visiting Bournemouth by train) would visit to a certain car park on the way to his favourite Fish & Chip restaurant and purchase a parking ticket for the car he hadn’t brought just because it came with a “two meals for the price of one” voucher on the back. While I am not sure that Martin “money saving expert” Lewis would go to such extremes he would probably applaud my friend’s devotion to going out and making a saving. The older generation are a great source of inspiration for how not to waste money. On a recent trip home to Northampton I questioned why my parents had a four pint milk carton full of water next to the sink. Mum explained that when she turns on the tap for hot water she fills the bottle with the cold/tepid water that you always get before the hot water arrives and then takes it down to the water butt in the garden so it can be used on the plants. I was impressed to have such ecologically sound parents until Dad chipped in with the true reason which had nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with having a water meter fitted and “if I’m going to pay for it I might as well use it “he said. I am definitely not a chip off the old block in that respect but will be taking a leaf out of their book and thinking harder about how I can make what I have go further and last longer.

Opening up about depression Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones recently admitted she has been treated for bipolar II, which causes sufferers to experience extreme highs and lows. Lisa Salmon looks at the disorder, which used to be known as a form of manic depression, and what it might mean for Jones and her family.


She may lead a glamorous lifestyle, but behind the glittering showbiz facade Catherine Zeta Jones is as fragile as any other ordinary human being. Her husband Michael Douglas's battle with throat cancer over the past year has put the mother-of-two under enormous pressure, finally culminating in her being admitted to a psychiatric hospital suffering from a form of manic depression. The Welsh star, who was in the Connecticut hospital for five days, has bipolar II disorder, a less severe form of bipolar I disorder which involves mood swings between depression and a kind of manic elation. Last week, Zeta Jones's publicist confirmed that the 41-year-old Oscar winner had received mental health treatment, saying: "After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder. "She's feeling great and looking forward to starting work on two upcoming films." In an interview last year, the actress hinted at her struggle with depression, saying that although she was fortunate, "that's not to say I don't get down on myself". She added: "I try and stay positive. I don't just bring myself down, I bring everyone else down. It's like a dark cloud, 'Uh oh, here we go', and I have to snap out of it." The star is not alone with her illness - other celebrities including Stephen Fry, Kerry Katona and Ben Stiller have the disorder, and the Royal

College of Psychiatrists estimates that around one in 100 adults has bipolar disorder at some point in their life. The illness, which affects males and females equally, usually begins during or after the teenage years. It's unusual for it to start after the age of 40. According to Dr Peter Byrne, director of public education at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, as many as 2.5% of people may suffer, or have suffered, from bipolar disorder. Awareness raising The fact that Zeta Jones has publicly announced that she has bipolar disorder has been welcomed by the Depression Alliance, which hopes the star's honesty will encourage more people with any form of depression to seek treatment. O'Neill points out: "Depression has got a lot of media coverage as celebrities have come forward, and that's helped lift the stigma about it." She says the charity "applauds" the honesty of well-known people like Zeta Jones, and the England cricketer Michael Yardy, who flew home from the World Cup in India last month suffering from depression. "One of the awful things about all forms of depression and mental illness is the loneliness and isolation, which can lead people to suicide," she explains. "What you need more than ever is the kindness of people around you, but they often turn their backs.

"For people who've struggled for years and haven't wanted to tell anybody, having well-known people come forward helps them see that everyone can get depression, and everyone can come through it." She adds: "Mental illness is absolutely devastating and can bring you to your knees, and the cruelty of everyone else on top of that can be life-threatening. "I'd like to thank Catherine Zeta Jones for letting her story hit the headlines. I hope it helps other people."

Poles apart Bipolar II is similar to bipolar I, which involves moods swinging between high and low, from depression to a form of elation featuring manic, impulsive and restless behaviour. However, in bipolar II, the "up" moods never reach full-on mania. The less intense elevated moods in bipolar II disorder are called hypomania. In between episodes of hypomania and depression, many people with bipolar II disorder live normal lives, possibly for years. Dr Byrne says that because people with bipolar II get many episodes of depression, it's often assumed they're among the 20% of the population who get unipolar depression - that is, major depression without manic phases. "But what's missed is that they have an episode not of mania - when someone becomes very high and gets delusions - but hypomania, which is very subtle," he explains. Hypomania can make a person very anxious and irritable, they may lose sleep, and have a sensation of being slightly more productive (which is usually a misperception). However, people with hypomania are typically not deluded. "It's quite subtle," says Dr Byrne, "and that's why people with bipolar take an average of 15 years to get a diagnosis." Hypomania can sometimes occur because the many episodes of depression may lead to a person taking antidepressants, and their mood goes too high as a result. Bipolar mood swings can last for several weeks or months, and are far beyond the moods experienced by people without the disorder.

In the genes The cause isn't completely understood, but the Royal College of Psychiatrists says research suggests bipolar disorder runs in families, and has more to do with genes than with upbringing. There may be a physical problem with the brain systems which control moods, which is why the disorder can often be treated with medication. Episodes can sometimes be brought on by physical illness, or stressful experiences such as Michael Douglas's struggle with cancer, which is thought to have triggered his wife's bipolar episode. "Although bad news and bad events don't cause the disorder, they're more likely to precipitate it," explains Dr Byrne. "Any bad event, like a failed exam, a broken relationship, a death in the family, are all things that are likely to bring on either a manic episode or, more likely, a depressed episode." The best treatment is a healthy lifestyle including sensible drinking and exercise, and recognising early warning signs such as disturbed sleep and losing interest and pleasure in life. However, most people diagnosed with bipolar will be on a mood-stabiliser medication, usually lithium. Earlier this month it was revealed that use of anti-depressant drugs soared last year, with more than 41 million prescriptions issued - although the rise was particularly in the most common group of antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Prozac, rather than the lithium-based medications normally used to treat bipolar disorder. It hasn't been disclosed whether Zeta Jones is on any form of medication as a result of her illness. However, the UK depression charity Depression Alliance points out that the star has done the right thing by going into hospital. The charity's chief executive, Emer O'Neill, says: "The great message from Catherine Zeta Jones is that she hasn't locked herself away. "She's got bipolar disorder, acknowledged it, is getting the right treatment, and her whole career is still ahead of her."

Symptoms explained The US National Institute of Mental Health describes bipolar disorder symptoms as: Mania • Long periods of feeling high, or an overly happy or outgoing mood. • Extremely irritable mood, agitation, feeling jumpy or 'wired'. • Talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another, having racing thoughts. • Being easily distracted & restless. • Increasing goal-directed activities, such as taking on new projects. • Sleeping little. • Having an unrealistic belief in your abilities. • Behaving impulsively & taking part in pleasurable, high-risk behaviours, such as spending sprees, impulsive sex, & impulsive business investments.

Depression • Long periods of feeling worried or empty. • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, including sex. • Tiredness. • Having problems concentrating, remembering, & making decisions. • Being restless or irritable. • Changing eating, sleeping, or other habits. • Thinking of death or suicide.

Paula Radcliffe Fitness tips for new mums If you're a new mum and watching the London Marathon has made you want to get fit, marathon World Record holder Paula Radcliffe, a new mum herself can help you along your way. Sleepless nights, weight gain and lack of exercise can leave new mums feeling a physical wreck. But, just weeks after the London Marathon showed how much so many people get out of running, marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe, a new mum herself, has raced in to help other mums get back into shape. She's hoping that her tips will encourage mums to take part in this year's Cancer Research UK and Tesco Race for Life, a women-only 5k or 10k race that she's an ambassador for. Radcliffe, who gave birth to her second child, Raphael, in September, started exercising again just a week afterwards. She gives these training tips for new mums who want to try running: Give yourself time to recover and enjoy spending bonding time with your baby. Don't feel pressured to exercise before you're ready, and listen to your body. Ease yourself back into exercise gently. If you rush too soon it'll catch up with you later. Remember, if in doubt you should consult your doctor, midwife or health visitor who will be able to advise you on how to get back into exercising sensibly. Start pelvic floor muscle exercises in the first few days post-partum. To practise pelvic floor exercises imagine that you need to stop yourself from going for a wee, pull the muscles up and in. Hold the position for five counts, then release back to the starting position. Start with low-impact exercise such as walking round the garden or local park before gradually building back to running. It's supposed to take up to four months for your ligaments to regain their usual tension and strength, and until they do this, your joints will take more of the impact. When you're ready to start running again, run off road as much as possible to begin with. Build up gradually. Keep well hydrated, especially if you're breastfeeding.

learnt? The key lesson that I have learnt is not giving in to the temptations of crash diets. They don’t work. You need to stick to something that you can use throughout your life for long periods of time not just a quick fix.

What motivated you to call a personal trainer? (What was the turning point for you?) After seeing various pictures of me at birthday parties and Christmas, I was repulsed by what I saw. I really wanted to be in shape for summer and this gave me the motivation I needed to get a personal trainer.

Do you feel you could have achieved the same results on your own? Definitely not. A personal trainer gives you that extra boost and the encouragement that you need. Receiving weekly updates on progress and motivational emails really does help push you and gives you reasons not to cheat on your diet.

How has working with a personal trainer benefited you? It has really increased my confidence. Before I started training I was quite a shy person, but after losing all the weight I have had a much better social life. I was also really uninformed when it came to fitness and diet. Working with a personal trainer has provided me with the knowledge to work even when Shay (personal trainer) isn’t here.

Are you confident that you are going to hit your long term goal? Definitely. If you have something that you are striving for you will always reach your long term goal. Mine was to be able to feel confident enough to go topless on the beach in the summer holidays and get down to my target weight. If you keep that image in mind then you will always be able to work hard in the training sessions and eat well too!

What have been the hardest obstacles to overcome and have you had to make any major sacrifices? The hardest obstacle is the diet, and getting motivated to actually do the exercise. I have had to give up a lot of food that I love, and dealing with the cravings has been very difficult. It is odd what cravings you have when you don’t get to eat food you previously ate on a daily basis.

On a typical day, what foods do you eat? I am obviously eating a lot of meat day to day making sure I’m eating the protein. I am also eating plenty of vegetables, not only are they good for me but they fill me up which stops the temptation of snacking throughout the day. I will have three square meals a day (especially breakfast!) and make sure I vary what I eat so I don’t get bored! What have been you favourite workouts?


The nice thing about working with Shay is the huge variety of workouts we do. It ranges from cardio to weights and every training session is different. My favourite so far is definitely boxing. It is something that I would never have chosen to do if I was working out on my own. It has improved my balance and co-ordination and introduced me to a discipline that I now have a lot of respect for.

Urban Beach, both a hotel and a restaurant, is the older sister of the very hip and trendy, very popular seafront destination Urban Reef. Never having experienced Urban Beach before, I was intrigued to discover the roots of the ‘Urban’ enterprise. We visited Urban Beach for dinner on Good Friday evening and were pleasantly surprised by the buzzing atmosphere. The outside garden was filled with young, trendy locals all making the most of the fantastic weather we had enjoyed that day. Situated on Argyll Road, between the heart of Boscombe town centre and the seafront, Urban Beach is yet another fine example of the up and coming nature that is Boscombe, evidenced by the ‘young professional’ bustling crowd that were happily enjoying the relaxed surroundings. We ventured inside for dinner, where we were allocated a very comfortable and cosy booth tucked around the corner, which suited us well, because the restaurant adjoins the indoor bar. However, the positioning of our booth, meant that we were sheltered from any overflow of bar noise. We were served very promptly and enthusiastically and before we knew it our drinks had arrived. The menu was

concise, yet varied with specials offering some exciting dishes of local fresh fish. We started dinner with the selection of breads, which were gone in seconds not only because we were so hungry but because they were extremely moreish. The breads were accompanied by a balsamic syrup and a parsley oil, the latter which neither my husband or I had ever experienced before, but were keen to do so again. For my starter I had the bruschetta which was light and full of deliciously intense Italian flavours with a very creamy mozzarella topping. My husband started with the Thai fishcakes served with a mango salsa. He thoroughly enjoyed the fishcakes, but for him the mango accompaniment didn’t sit too comfortably with the fish, but this was more his personal palette than anything else. For our main courses, I had one of the ‘specials’ of lemon Dover sole served with a lemon and caper butter, roasted new potatoes and a seasonal salad. The fish was cooked perfectly, and had the wonderfully light and delicate flavour that I always enjoy from fresh Dover sole. Chris chose the rib-eye steak, served with thick cut chips and a béarnaise sauce. His steak was cooked perfectly to his liking of medium-rare,

and he thoroughly enjoyed the sauce and home made thick cut wedges. Feeling hungry for more, we dared to push our stomachs to the limit and both had desserts. I chose the white chocolate croissant bread and butter pudding served with English custard whilst Chris decided on the chocolate squares with banana cream. We had a 10 minute wait, but as the old adage goes of ‘the best things are worth waiting for’, this proved to certainly be the case with my bread and butter pudding. It satisfied my sweet tooth perfectly and had I not been full to the brim, I would have certainly cleaned the plate. Chris’ chocolate squares were delicious, but the banana cream could have benefited from more banana flabouring. Overall, this hidden gem was a lovely surprise for us and overall we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. In contrast to its younger sister Urban Reef, Urban Beach offers a less polished, more homely environment with its Victorian exterior and internal finishing’s including the Victorian cornicing and ceiling roses. If you are looking for a laid back, rustic appeal, that offers super food then Urban Beach is certainly a place to head to. We do recommend booking, because the few tables that weren’t filled on our arrival had reserved signs on.

My dark hair turns a reddish shade when I go in the sun which I hate - what can I do? Exposure to the sun can change the colour of hair – sometimes this is welcome. If you have light brown hair for instance you will find it may lighten up giving a naturally sun kissed effect but often it the effect is less flattering. If you’ve had your hair coloured dark red for instance you may find it starts turning more of an orange shade. The best thing to do is simply to avoid exposing it as much as possible by keeping hair covered with a hat, scarf or protective product like Redkens waterwear. Ken Hom's complete package 61 year old Ken Hom has become one of the nation's favourite celebrity chefs. The Chicago-born cook explains his rise to the top, including his OBE award and cooking for celebrities. Along with three recipes from his latest release, Complete Chinese Cookbook.


Calm, softly spoken and humble. There aren't many celebrity chefs who could be described in this way. But then Ken Hom isn't your typical TV chef, he's perhaps the most relaxing celebrity you can spend half an hour with. As he leans back in his chair exchanging pleasantries, his cool, laid-back demeanour gives nothing away of his success. Over the years, his name has become synonymous with far eastern food. In addition to his TV career, he's written more than 20 cookery books, has a hugely successful wok and accessory range and has been a consultant to airlines and hotels worldwide. Mild mannered he may be, but slouch he isn't. Remind him of his achievements and he almost seems surprised by them. "I never ever dreamt I'd be here 27 years later talking to you," he explains. "I thought, OK, I'm from the States. I'll come and do the TV series because it's work for me and then I'd go back and that would be it. But instead, it actually became my career!" The series he's referring to is the 1984 BBC show Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery - the programme which kick-started his career in the UK. Not that he's taking all the credit. "Madhur Jaffrey mentioned me to the BBC and made a strong case for the series. I'm also grateful to Delia Smith because, when I did my first series no one knew who I was and the week before, she'd written a fantastic review encouraging viewers to watch it. That's something I'll never forget." There have been plenty of career highlights along the way. One particular standout being the 2009 OBE he was awarded for 'services to the culinary arts'. "At first I thought it was a friend doing an April Fool's joke," he laughs. "When I realised it wasn't, I was stunned, surprised and happy - not so much for myself but because I knew it would make my mum so happy, and very proud of me. She was close to 90 at that time and couldn't travel anymore, but she read all about it in the Chinese newspapers." It seems a lot's changed since the Chicago chef came to the UK. Now, after an illustrious career, the 61-year-old is trying to take life a little easier. He splits his time between France and Thailand and loves to travel, but he's definitely not ready to hang up his wok just yet. After all, his passion for food is yet

to abate. "One of the reasons I don't eat breakfast is because I often dream about food, so I feel full when I wake up. When I have nightmares, the usual one is that I'm preparing a meal for about 100 people which isn't ready and I'm running late." Given his ongoing obsession for food, Hom is still hungry for recipe success and as such, the BBC recently published his latest book Ken Hom - Complete Chinese Cookbook. His enthusiasm for the book is infectious. It's easy to find yourself absentmindedly planning a veritable Chinese feast while he passionately speaks about some of the 244 mouth-watering dishes in the publication: "The book is pretty comprehensive. Some things are quite complicated while others are very simple, so there's something for everyone," he gushes. And when asked about the celebrities he's fed, he admits: "I've cooked for Tina Turner, Elton John and also political leaders, presidents and prime ministers," before thoughtfully adding, "They're just like anybody else." And as for his own celebrity appeal? "I don't feel like I'm a celebrity, I'm a teacher," he states matter-offactly, though still with a smile on his face. He looks back at his career with fondness and is proud of the contribution he's made in bringing Chinese cuisine into the nation's kitchens. "I think we can all be proud that people can cook good roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, great curry and Chinese food. It brings something into your life to cook other dishes, and hopefully it also brings tolerance and understanding." He ends our chat as reflective and calm as he started: "We need peace and love in the world, and if we can contribute to that, why not? I sound like an old hippy - but I was one when I had hair! Barbecued roast pork (Serves 6 to 8) Ingredients: 1kg boneless pork shoulder 3-5tbsp honey, for basting For the marinade: 2tbsp light soy sauce 2tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 2tbsp sugar 1tbsp whole yellow bean sauce 2tbsp finely chopped garlic 2tbsp hoisin sauce 2tbsp fermented red beancurd 1tbsp five-spice powder Salt and black pepper Method: Cut the pork into 18x10cm strips. Mix the marinade ingredients in a bowl, add the pork, and leave overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4. While it's heating up, place the pork strips on a rack in a roasting pan, breast side up. Put 150ml of water into the roasting pan. (This will prevent the fat from splattering.) Put the pork into the oven and roast for 45 minutes, basting from time to time with the honey. Turn the heat up to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6 and continue to roast for a further 15 minutes. Remove the pork from the oven and leave until it's cool enough to handle. Slice thinly and serve.

Aubergine with sesame sauce

(Serves 4) Ingredients: 675g Chinese or regular aubergines For the sauce: 2tbsp sesame paste or peanut butter ½tsp roasted and ground Sichuan peppercorns 2tbsp sesame oil 2tsp chilli oil 2tsp sugar 1tbsp finely chopped garlic 2tsp chilli bean sauce 2tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander Salt

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Put the aubergines into a roasting tin and bake them for about 35 minutes if they're the Chinese variety, or 50 minutes if they're the larger variety. They should be charred outside and tender inside. Allow them to cool thoroughly before peeling them. Set aside until you're ready to use them. To serve the dish, mix all the sauce ingredients together, season with one and a half teaspoons of salt, add the cooked aubergines and mix well. Serve at once, at room temperature.

Warm banana compote in plum wine with candied ginger

recipe, I love to add lots & lots of fresh chopped tomatoes to the olive oil and shrimps, which help add a sweet bite with a slight sharpness to complete the vinaigrette."

(Serves 4-6) Ingredients: 1 vanilla pod, split in half, or 1tsp vanilla extract 2tsp sugar 300ml Japanese sweet plum wine or port wine 6 ripe bananas 2tsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (optional) 2tbsp finely chopped candied ginger 1tbsp lemon juice

Method: Scrape out the inside of each half of the vanilla pod, & put into a bowl with the sugar.Put the plum wine into a wok or a large frying pan and add the vanilla pods. Bring to a simmer until reduced by one third. Peel the bananas and cut them in half lengthways. Add them to the reduced plum wine, together with the sugar and vanilla seed mixture (or the vanilla extract) and simmer for five minutes, until warmed through. Whisk in the butter, if using, then add the candied ginger and lemon juice. Serve immediately. 155

Made by award-winning film-maker Henry Singer (The Falling Man), this programme tells the exclusive behind-the-scenes story of Wootton Bassett. The documentary tells the story of the people of Wootton Bassett as they prepare to honour the repatriation of Ranger Aaron McCormick. It follows Wootton Bassett over one day as it builds up to the arrival of the hearse and looks back over the four years that have bought the town to the nation's attention. The film meets those who regularly line the streets, including resident Ken, a 94-year-old Second World War veteran who lost comrades in that conflict; resident Bert, whose brother Tom was killed in the Korean War; and Lee, the mother of a marine who was killed in Afghanistan. Wootton Bassett – The Town That Remembers tells the story of a remarkable town and explores how people have grieved and remembered their war dead across different wars and generations.

Britain’s largest high security prison has allowed an exclusive insight into life for prisoners and staff for a new documentary series on ITV1, Strangeways. Behind the Victorian walls of HMP Manchester, formerly known as Strangeways, are some of the country’s most violent men. There are 1200 prisoners, including murderers, rapists, drug dealers and terrorists serving sentences ranging from a few days to life. Programme makers, Wild Pictures, who have won acclaim for powerful documentaries on Holloway and Wormwood Scrubs prisons, were given unique access to follow the lives of prisoners and prison officers who make up this complex community at HMP Manchester. The three part series shows how the prison has moved on from the notorious riots of 1990 and provides a close up view of prison staff’s efforts to cope with the many challenges thrown at them, often in the face of extreme provocation and physical violence. By tracking individual stories, with prisoners talking openly on camera, the series provides an intimate perspective on inmates’ ways of dealing with the tension of life on the inside and offers an unflinching view of prison culture and its violence, self-harm and drug use. The series also looks at the importance of strong family ties in keeping prisoners on the straight and narrow, and features television’s first prison wedding as Kelly Hansen marries her fiancé – armed robber, Adrian Fielding. Cameras follow the couple on their special day in Strangeways and then during the next few months as they come to terms with the fact that Adrian will not be released for at least another two years. Despite family misgivings, Kelly was determined to marry Adrian in prison rather than wait until he had completed a seven year sentence. On the big day Kelly is welcomed into the prison in her pink bridal gown, with their children in matching wedding finery. But they all have to be searched thoroughly in case they have smuggled in contraband.

There’s no celebratory champagne and flowers for the couple as they take their vows in a spartan meeting room in the prison visitors’ area. Adrian has been allowed out for an hour, and as soon as the short ceremony is over he has to return to his cell to spend his first night of married life alone. Category A prisoners arrive at HMP Manchester daily under armed guard in bomb proof vans. These are men with the means and motive to escape. They are so dangerous they must be locked up in a prison within a prison. Richard Vince, Governor of Strangeways. “We have people in custody who have murdered in custody. Absolutely they can be dangerous... by virtue of some people having life sentences you can safely say they are a very dangerous individual.” The cameras were allowed onto the Cat A wing to film the lives of some of the nation’s most notorious criminals, like body builder Michael Sharp, who is in prison for a brutal murder. Michael Sharp says: “There's no light at the end of the tunnel, so what you're finding is a lot of stabbings, a lot of slashings, people boiling up tubs of butter, turning it into oil, throwing that over the faces, over the body, they don't care what they do. They don't care if they stab someone up, they don't care if they slash people up.” The film also followed first time prisoner Lee Smith as he was given the devastating news that he would be spending 15 years in jail for his role in a multi million pound drugs ring. His baby son may be a teenager before he is released. He says he had been paid £500 to drive a van on three trips to earn some money for Christmas. Lee pleaded guilty to his part in the conspiracy, and was anticipating a seven year sentence. The film shows how he has to come to terms with seeing his family only in the prisoners’ visiting room. The second programme brings a unique portrait of the work of the nursing staff in the prison hospital. The nurses talk candidly about their daily efforts to stop prisoners self-harming and committing suicide because they cannot cope with life in jail.

Hunting Britains Most Wanted 10 may, 9pm, channel 4

The expansion of the EU and open borders in the UK has led to a surge in foreign criminals heading for Britain. The number of requests for wanted fugitives has risen ten-fold over the past five years and now totals more than 4,300 a year. Over the course of three months Cutting Edge have unique access to New Scotland Yard's Extradition Unit and follow them as they go about their work - tracking down murderers, suspected rapists and armed robbers from abroad to send them back to face justice. Some of these criminals go to extraordinary lengths to evade capture, changing their name and ID so it's a painstaking and often frustrating experience tracking them down. A record 1500 foreign fugitives are now arrested each year and with more and more coming to these shores it's a job that is stretching the unit and its officers to the limit. Assisted by homelessness experts, they’ll discover if they have the skills to become mentors and work with their guests to improve

criminals, and capture high tension arrests as the unit's hard work finally pays off. The cameras are also with the unit when it deals with some of its biggest ever high profile cases including the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, wanted in Sweden for alleged sex crimes, and the arrest of Shrien Dewani, wanted in South Africa in connection with the death of his wife, Anni, on their honeymoon. Other cases include the hunt for Hungary's most wanted fugitive, a man linked to a string of armed robberies and an attempted murder and currently roaming around London. The police also chase down a Turkish man who conducted an honour killing and a suspected Croatian war criminal. Officers intercept a man convicted of murder in his homeland Albania. He has spent more than ten years on the run, and his wife unwittingly leads them to him. He is arrested in the middle of a busy street market protesting his innocence. The unit is put on high alert for a suspected serial rapist who's escaped the French authorities - he is considered by the police to be highly dangerous and they must do everything in their power to close in on him before it's too late.
