Ealing, Hanwell, Acton & Southall were all situated on the main road that lead from London to Oxford, which travellers used to pass through to the villages. The electric trams drove social change as its cheap & fast service encouraged workers to move out of the inner city & settle in suburban areas.
With the continued influx of immigrants from the West Indies, inter-racial tensions grew in West London, partly due to the increased competition for scarce affordable housing. This lead to the infamous Notting Hill riots in 1958.

The Ealing Great Western Railway was demolished in 1961 & replaced by a more modern building with shops & a ticket hall. The late 50s & early 60s saw the start of mass slum clearing in Notting Hill, & working class communities were broken up. At a similar time Portobello market became a place to be seen by trendsetters as it was cheap & still very close to London. In the west, areas such as Chiswick, Richmond & Ealing Broadway have been popular among wealthy buyers for a while now. However, with the much anticipated Crossrail & regeneration, less well-known areas are being highlighted, & younger first-time buyers are emerging in the area.
