ike most young adults and students my age, I have a fair share of moments where I lost myself in a limbo of confusion, self-loathing, feeling like I am floating in an endless void, not knowing where I’m headed or what I’m doing in the first place There came a time when I lost all hope and motivation to move forward the ember that kept me going had gone out and everything was pitch black I felt as if the universe conspired against me and I asked myself

In the world we live in today, in the current stage of our lives, we are constantly bombarded with trials and challenges as old and as cliché as it is, the same heat that melts the butter hardens the egg, these will either make or break us

Additionally, we are always expected to live up to the roles we play either as a cog in the machine that we call “existence” or as an element in the cycle we call “life” We go through the same old, mundane, and archetypal process: be born, go to school and get that education, grow up, get a job, have a family and settle down, and meet your Creator when all of it is done Sometimes we may feel that all of it is meaningless, but eventually, we would come to a realization that the journey we had, the lessons we learned from the trials of life, and the decisions we made make everything make sense just like what happened two years ago when the pandemic started, when the world stopped, and when it felt as if everything is falling apart

However,anewdawnispeekingoverthe horizon.

As we leave the horrors of the pandemic and embark on a new journey ahead, let us retrospectively take into account what happened, what transpired, and what could have been during one of the worst shocks of our collective existence In the process, let us celebrate the milestones we’ve achieved and the amazing display of humanity’s bravery and tenacity to trudge against the unknown waters of time

Although Kambangon revolves around celebrating resiliency which got us through the nightmares of recent events, we must not over-glorify and romanticize it to the point that we accept the status quo especially if it is unfavorable and it jeopardizes the marginalized To be critical is to question existing ideologies and practices, to spark honest conversations that will bring to light what was once hidden in the dark, and to engage in transformative dissent that will bring forth the change necessary to propel humanity toward equality and progress It is a choice that we can have and what we do with it matters

Infact,recentdatafromtheWorldBank revealedthePhilippineshavingthehighest percentageoflearningpovertywhichisat91% ascomparedtoitscounterpartnationsinAsia Itwasfoundthatchildrenattheageof10still struggledwiththeinabilitytoreadand understandshort,andage-appropriatetexts ThesedatafromtheWorldBankaremerelyan additiontothelonglistofevidenceservingas prooftoascertainandestablishtheveracityof thepresenceofaneducationalcrisis

Tosupportsuchclaims,probablyoneofthe mostshockingyeteye-openingrevelations thatsparkedpublicinterestandconcern

Consecutivelyin2019,theTrends inInternationalMathematicsand ScienceStudy(TIMMS)was releasedindicatingthatFilipino Grade4studentslagandscored lowestinmathematicsandsciences ascomparedtotheircounterparts from58countries Alarmingly,when compared,astarkdifference betweenthe2013and2019results showsacleardeteriorationin learning

Inthesameyear,theSoutheast AsiaPrimaryLearningMetrics (SEA-PLM)Program2019Main RegionalReportshowedthatofall theGrade5studentsnationwide only10%mettheproficiency standardsofreading,while2%for writing,and17%inmathematics
