INTRODUCTION

Mayor's Foreword T he city of Valletta usually comes alive during the festive season. Holiday lights line the city’s roads, activities take over the main square and people are scattered throughout the city-centre. The spirit of Christmas is usually a palpable force in the city.

Although a great time for meeting up with family and friends I am mindful that the sparkle of Christmas may be dulled for many as they struggle with loneliness, the loss of a loved one or when they come to terms with an illness. It is important that we do all we can to provide help and support to vulnerable people in our communities, particularly during this period. There are many for whom Christmas is a sad time. I would encourage everyone

to reach out this Christmas and extend a hand of friendship to vulnerable people.

Let’s look after each other throughout the festive season. Drive safely. Donate to those in need. Support local businesses. And keep talking to each other because even when we don't see eye to eye, as long as we keep talking, we’re building towards a better, brighter future.

The festive season in the City Don’t miss out! Here’s all you need to know about what’s happening in the capital in these upcoming weeks.

It’s going to be a jolly season in the capital as everyone in Valletta comes together to celebrate Christmas, with Town Centre Management of the Valletta Local Council; Arts Council Malta; Pjazza Teatru Rjal; the Malta Tourism Authority; Valletta 2018 Foundation and Commerce Department joining forces for the fifth year running to turn the city into one massive party zone between December 13 and 31.

The Christmas calendar is packed with various activities taking place daily – from concerts by various local performing artists and orchestras; to street buskers; Christmas caroling; Christmas 3D projections lighting up the Grand Master’s Palace in Pjazza San Ġorġ; a traditional procession with Baby Jesus; band marches; crib exhibitions; a traditional Christmas artisan fair and … to end it all in style, the New Year’s eve National Celebrations 2017, to be held in Pjazza San Ġorġ and Valletta City Centre.

And as an added gift, when visiting Valletta during the festive season shoppers will benefit from various offers, lottery cash vouchers drawn daily, free gifts for children, and free parking offered by the city’s business community. Valletta – a truly unique cultural experience and one of the most popular shopping destinations during Christmas.

During Christmas time, because the complex is decorated beautifully and it’s a pleasure seeing the people enjoy it.

There is more than one, really. First of all, you can find everything under one roof – cafeteria, clothing shops, cinema, even bingo! So it's very convenient.

Working in Valletta is great because?

Because it's the capital city and it's very easy to get here from any other location by bus.

What is your role?

I’m a full-time sales representative.

Can you share one highlight when you were really proud of being part of this team?

After every successful shift, seeing our patrons leave the Embassy Cinemas satisfied. Without such a great team, it wouldn't be possible.

Which is the best part of the day?

From my experience I can say that this is that moment when you see customers leave the shop satisfied with a smile on their face.

When customers come to visit me at the shop just to thank me for my support and help.

What do you feel is the one element that makes the Embassy so popular with people?

The fact that it really is the one-stop mall for everything; you can find anything related to technology, clothing, cinema, food and so forth.

It’s always bustling within the historical capital city, and I love that.

DID YOU KNOW? The Manoel Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Europe. It was commissioned by Grandmaster De Vilhena in 1731 to serve as "honest entertainment" for the public. The theatre opened a mere 10 months and 2,184 scudi later, and the motto "ad honestam populi oblectationem" remains inscribed on the main entrance to date.

The Triton fountain that lies at the entrance to the city was designed by sculptor Vincent Apap in collaboration with Victor Anastasi, after winning a public competition launched by the government in 1952. The sculptor chose to include the figure of the Triton, from Greek mythology, in order to link to Malta's strong maritime identity. Rome's Fontana delle Tartarughe, in Piazza Mattei, inspired the actual design showing the Tritons holding the basin.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Fans of Harry Potter will be pleased to know that J.K. Rowling is back with more magic and adventure. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them revolves around the adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards, some 70 years before Harry Potter reads his book in school! The year is 1926, and Newt has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts,

which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. The original lift that connected the Upper Barrakka Gardens to Lascaris Wharf was constructed

by Joseph Richmond and Co. Of London. The lift was opened in September 1905. The lift included two cabins, each carrying up to 12 passengers. It rose vertically 167 feet 7 inches, extending around 23 feet out from the bastions themselves.

St John's Co-Cathedral has been at the center of most of the biggest historical happenings in Malta. When the French Occupation was ended successfully thanks the intervention of the British, the occasion was marked with a solemn mass at St John's, attended by all Malta's leaders of the time. This was also the site for one of Malta's first experiences of self-government, as, in November 1921, Ministers and Members of the Legislative Assembly, met there for the Tedeum.

The Valletta National 2017 NYE celebrations are back Wave goodbye to the outgoing year and welcome 2017 in style as Valletta holds its much-anticipated New Year's Eve celebrations.

Following the success over the last few years, Malta now boasts a New Year’s Eve national celebration rivalling those in other countries. The event aims to bring the magic and festive atmosphere throughout most of our capital city in this magical night.

The celebrations are being organised by the Valletta local council in collaboration with G7 Events, and supported by the Valletta 2018 Foundation, Ministry for Tourism and the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government.

St. George’s Square once again will host the main stage and will see the very best of Malta’s top local artists and bands. This year the lineup includes some international artists, which will be announced soon.

Back to its former glory Fort St Elmo played a pivotal role throughout Valletta’s history.

Now, as extensive restoration works were recently completed it takes its place as a jewel of the capital once again.

By the late middle ages, the strategically-important positioning of Fort St Elmo was already recognised and referred to as a “permanent watch-post at Santu Eramu”.

However, the fort’s role in Malta’s history was sealed around the time of the Great Siege of 1565, when it played a big role during the Ottoman attack.

The Turkish attack ended up destroying massive sections of the fort, and today’s building has precious little left of the original.

The restoration included the on-site chapel and also saw the dismantling of the National War Museum, which is now incorporated with the new military museum.

During restoration works, a number of previously unseen tunnels, underground rooms and the foundations of a windmill dating back to the pre-British period were discovered.

After Malta’s victory during the Great Siege, reconstruction works started immediately. The fort was enlarged and fitted with barracks, ovens and cisterns.

More changes and additions to the building were carried out during subsequent decades and centuries.

Of note is the building of the Vendome Bastion in 1614; a polverista in the 18th century and the construction of the Carafa Bastions by military engineer Carl Grunenberg in 1687.

The British also did their fair share of changes to the building, adding a musketry parapet that goes on up to the Vendome battery and converting the polverista within Vendome Bastion into a permanent armoury to house the small arms removed from the Palace Armoury.

A number of gun emplacements were constructed between 1919 and 1939 in order to house new guns. The fort played an important part to help defeat the Italians when they attacked the Grand Harbour by sea on July 26, 1941.

Later, in the early 1970s, more works were done on Abercrombie's Bastion.

The fort recently received a multi-million Euro restoration, which was carried out

St Biagio steps are named after a fourth century bishop and physician who was believed to have performed a number of miracles, including saving the life of a child who was choking on a fish bone. He was martyred in 316AD when the Romans were trying to stop the proliferation of Christianity in their territory. His feast is celebrated on February 3.

1. TAKE A TOUR OF VALLETTA'S GARDENS Valletta has a considerable amount of green spaces, most of which sport spectacular views covering The Three Cities, Sliema and Manoel Island. The most popular starting point are the Upper Barrakka gardens, with plenty of open spaces for the little ones to run around and use up their energy, while the adults enjoy a drink at the kiosk. Or how about giving your little ones a tour of the historical monuments at Hastings Garden? The views and the greenery make it an ideal spot for family picnics – don’t forget to pack some munchies for the young ones! The Lower Barrakka gardens are popular for the breathtaking views and the many possibilities for a game of hide and seek. There’s also the added advantage of a beautiful (short) walk down to Barbara's Bastions, with its picturesque surroundings.

2. ENJOY BREATHTAKING VIEWS FROM ST ELMO'S And, while there, admire the recent renovation job that has transformed an already stunning fort into something even more special. Besides the obvious, and bloodied, historic connections, St Elmo's was the location where a number of iconic scenes in movies were shot - starting with the classic Midnight Express. The piazza and the chapel are also worth rediscovering.

3. TAKE A HISTORICAL TOUR OF VALLETTA ON THE BIG SCREEN Watch the exciting, glorious, and

sometimes bloodied history of the capital city come alive on the big screen at the Embassy Cinema. Valletta Living History is a 35-minute long audio visual show that will take the whole family on a thrilling journey, helping you relive Valletta’s evolution over the centuries. GET INTERACTIVE WITH MALTA’S FORTRESSES The recently-opened Fortress Builders Fortifications Interpretation Centre sheds light on the history of Valletta’s awe-inspiring defensive structures, displaying most of the historical sites in an interactive manner under one roof. The site is not a museum in the traditional sense of the word – instead, it brings together facts, audio-visual material, hands-on experiences and replica models to create a holistic experience

that sheds light on the island’s most important defense systems. Finish off by taking in the spectacular view over Manoel Island, Sliema and Valletta from the terrace.

5. VISIT STRAIT STREET It was known as The Gut for its less-thansavoury reputation between the 1950s and the early 1970s, but nowadays Strait Streets is a fun destination for the entire family. Signs of gentrification are evident, however the character and architecture of this notorious area remains. ‘Art is my life’ Ġanni Pace, one of Malta’s veteran artists, has just helped celebrate Valletta’s 450th anniversary with a solo exhibition.

T

his was my eleventh solo exhibition and I was privileged to help celebrate Valletta’s 450th anniversary. And to think, it all started with drawing lessons at the Malta School of Art! I have always been into art, of course, and I thank my family for this. We didn’t have much money, back then, but my father always encouraged my brother and myself to appreciate art. He even used to buy arts magazines for us to learn about the great masters.

This influenced me to such an extent that even at school, I would often be daydreaming about art, studying the landscapes, instead of paying attention to whatever was happening in class.

Many of my teachers weren’t happy with this state of affairs, of course, except for my art teacher, George Borg, whom I still think about so fondly and with the utmost respect.

It was thanks to him that I was encouraged to start following evening classes at the School of Art. Eventually, I even started taking modelling lessons, under the same teacher, and since then I haven’t looked back.

I remember that, growing up and developing as an artist, one problem I had was finding studio space. Our house was not big enough to offer that extra space! But even here, I got lucky, finding a couple who very generously offered to allow me to use a flat they owned as a studio, while they vacationined in their summer house. This became my second home for the next three or so decades

and I spent too much time there, just getting inspired, planning my works, painting, making sculptures...

Of course, back then it was impossible to make a living as an artist, so I still needed to find a full-time job to help us survive. My first real employment was at a hotel, where the owners were also generous enough to allow me enough space and time to practice my art. At the time, I still needed to attend the School of Art, so they were very flexible with my work shifts. In return, I used to create food sculptures for the hotel buffet dinner.

When my work at this hotel came to an end, I set about finding another job immediately. Times were very hard and there weren’t enough jobs to go round.

Unfortunately, my art didn’t really help with jobs; one politician told me to learn a trade or to try my luck abroad!

Still, I persevered. I couldn’t give up what I loved doing most. I managed to find a job at the bank in the late 1970s and it was a profession that I continued until retirement. Even here, my employers totally supported my art – I put up a number of solo exhibitions with their help, in fact. The working hours also meant that I had enough time to continue working on my art.

Religious art has been a recurring theme for me. I have portrayed many religious

statues, such as St Andrew’s, St Dominic’s and St Augustine’s. I’m also quite proud of my depiction of San Ġorġ Preca’s life, which I executed in a two metre high terracotta panel. My work is even present at the President’s Palace of San Anton; I had repaired a fountain there!

It was Fr Marcio Zerafa who commissioned me to do that, while I was still working at the bank. Various presidents have also lent their support to my work.

Throughout the years, I have executed works in various media. I’m not sure what I prefer, to be honest. I’ve worked in wood, stone, clay... different materials come with their own different properties, but I do confess a fondness for terracotta. Somehow, working it with your bare fingers makes it more intimate.
