Apply these seven insider tips to any interior design project that

you are working on. They will save you stress, time and money, and most importantly make you look like a professional.

OBJECTIVE – Develop a real

understanding of the project. What are your personal goals? What

impression do you want the room to make? What is your budget? Answering such questions and

defining your objective are key. FUNCTION AND LIVABILITY –

Determine the function of your

space. Is it a living room? Dining room? Bedroom? Deciding

on the function of the space impacts how you design the space to be liveable.

SCALE AND PROPORTION – Size, and how the sizes of objects work together, are what add grace and

balance to a room. Choose pieces that will complement each other, and not overcrowd.

Think about the quantity, placement, colour, and type of light needed,

as well as the flexibility that you will need to support and enhance your function. Light is fun, play with it.

COLOR – Color can subdue or ignite a room. It can add formality and

sophistication, or create a relaxed

and casual atmosphere and improve the room’s functionality. Be fearless when it comes to color.

PATTERN AND TEXTURE – The spices of interior design, pattern and texture enhance any room. They

take your surroundings to

a higher level of quality and impact. Experiment with simple or ornate patterns and add some natural

textures for warmth. It will not take

long to find what works for the space. SIGNIFICANT AND RELEVANT

ORNAMENTS – The art on the walls

and the accessories chosen are the final layers to the Art of Space. These pieces should have significant meaning and

beauty, as they will enhance the mental

and emotional engagement of a space.

FUNCTION AND LIVABILITY The kitchen, breakfast, and family rooms, all open to each other live extremely well because we integrated the necessary functions early in the planning stage. A tech niche/desk for keeping up with the family’s activities, lots of counter space for cooking, and a spacious island with stools for a casual meal or afterschool homework. Then, the breakfast table is just the right size for the entire family to sit together for casual weeknight suppers, but also spread out on family game night or when working on a school project.

PATTERN AND TEXTURE Pattern and Texture are enhancers. They work together like the seasoning and spice in a good recipe to add interest and dimension to a room. The textural effect of the wainscot works beautifully with the subtleness of the floral print.

i

have always cherished everything old -it holds a sense of magic and dreams for me. As I started investing in

properties, I realized how most people thought the only

way to make money was to get rid of everything old. It's

all I could do from standing in front of these houses that they were gutting and screaming stop-well, let's be honest, in a lot of cases I did just that.

I love saving old homes, however, that's not what defines me. I

started in design because I believe that most people think they can't afford good design-that design is expensive. I felt like people like

me and my family were shut out because we didn't have thousands of dollars to spend. I really set out to be a pioneer in design for

people like me that knew quality-had what I consider great taste,

but had more important things to spend fifty dollars on than a throw pillow-like my electric bill.

I hope when people look at my designs they are encouraged and they feel at home. My home is my sanctuary and it is built on the

idea that this is where my family can be burden free. I've never been one for loud designs-calm color palettes comfortable fabrics-most

importatnly as the mom of 2 rambunctious rescue pups-washable. I

mix old with new. One hundred years ago, we had the best building

materials, fabrics money could buy. After the mid 20th centuty when everything started being mass produced the quality went downhill. I view each day as a new adventure and I must add I really don't have a choice. There are still many days where I have to fight

for credit on projects-where people (men and women) are quick to judge and discriminate against me. I have never claimed to

be an expert-I didn't spend my twenties studying at design and architectural school-I spent it working.

Studying houses that I cleaned -yes cleaned -design was a side dream

for a very long time. Every day I ask

questions from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep -I want tot know why something works, how it's made-how I

can make it better. It's frustrating for me when egos get in the way of salvaging classic designs. I , for one, am happy

to admit there's not a chance I would

ever be able to replicate the quality of

craftsmanship that I find in my projects

and in buildings across this world from

centureis ago. I think it's foolish for any

desinger to claim something as new and fresh-there's nothing new and fresh-we all take something exisitng and put our own interpretation on it. Very simple. I'm very fortunate- the beautiful

projects of yester year are snubbed

by the majority-so they are all mine to marvel at, cherish and renovate. My

latest works are in my favorite city-my hometown of Detroit, Michigan -it's a wonderful feeling to be working in a

city where some of the greatest minds are flocking to for a second chance.

It's funny-we haven't lived there in 7

years, but my son still says Detroit as his hometown. It gives me great pride.

I went from a penniless desinger a

decade ago to a sought after "expert" in historical restoration-has my life

changed? Sure-but my design values haven't -I just completed a 2 million

dollar mansion and my favorite part -I

tiled a bathroom that my friend, Art, had saved from an old building for years.

Oh, and now instead of dreaming about owning an old home --I own several-

some women have Chanel bags-Nicole Curtis has a great collection of homes

along with the high of knowing I saved someone's "history".

I'm looking forward to some happiness over the next few years. The stress

levels are still there-but only because

I'm detremined to make the most out

of this wonderful experience I have. I'm

going to seek as much time as I can out of the next two years before I send my

son, Ethan, off to college -I mean unless he says no and joins me at work -which I would be thrilled to see happen.

Actually, I wish happiness for him-

because what I have found is that when

you seek that success follows. My name

might not be circulating at country clubs as the hottest designer, but my name

is circulating the country as a different designer and I couldn't be happier.

GREAT TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING YOUR DREAM HOME. BY STEPHIE ROCKWELL

As we all know, buying your dream

home or that amazing vacation property can be a bit stressful and very exciting

all at the same time. Here are a few tips we suggest that buyers think about

when purchasing your next home to

make the experience more enjoyable. We have all heard of the “3 L’s” –

Location, location, location - more than once. It does play a large role in where

you want to purchase that perfect home or vacation property for you and your family. At PGA Luxury Real Estate we

encourage our buyers to create a list

of the most important factors that they

would like to have within the home and environment.

We encourage buyers to visit the

location a few times during the day and evening, in order to get an overall feel

of the area, community, and to explore

the town where they desire to purchase their dream property. This makes the

home buying process more specific and helps with what is truly important to the

buyer and the buyer’s family. Your home is not just a place where you sleep; it

is a reflection of you and your lifestyle.

Look for elements that complement and inspire you.

maintenance of your property year round. Although it is an extra expense in your budget, water damage from an unexpected leaky pipe or roof will probably cost you more later on. Plus, it will keep the property active. We hope these tips will help make the process of finding the right home or vacation property for you an enjoyable process.

At the heart of the plot stands Aberdeen Square. Two

blocks of flats and a complex of ten houses border an

expansive communal lawn. Former Cambridge mayor, Sheila Stuart and husband Bruce purchased one of

the four storey houses in the middle of the complex. When they first viewed the property, it was still under construction and was comprised of little more than a

shell. Today, from the ground floor kitchen and dining

room right up to the sky high master bedroom, it’s a study in show stopping interior design.

“Seeing it all come together has been a great

experience” says Sheila. “Moving here was quite a change for us. We came from a Victorian end-of-

terrace, so a very different way of living, – but the house instantly felt like home.”

Hugh had worked with Sheila and Bruce previously,

on their large Victorian end of terrace home and “We gave Hugh a brief, but then having worked with him on our other house, gave him the freedom to come up with his own schemes.”

Initially, furniture was “sorted” into suitability for

this new house or another home in Scotland. It then became clear that quite a few new items needed to

be sourced. Antiques are cleverly mixed with modern pieces to give a balanced eclectic look.

There were some surprises along the way, – for example,

the wallpaper in the master bedroom. A mottled pattern, which, blends blue, grey and a metallic shimmer, it’s

stunning stuff. The colours are brought out by cobalt curtains and silvered accessories, including a lame

bucket chair and a bedside angle poise with glass shade.

architect, who’s run his own practise for almost ten years, Bruce admits it was a bit of a leap of faith to move into

a house he had not designed himself. “I did have mixed feelings, but, on the other hand, you’re not forever

kicking yourself for things you could have differently.”

The Stuarts’ decision to leave their large Victorian home, filled with period furniture and a lifetime collection

of objets d’art, was, says Sheila, fuelled by a desire to

“‘downsize – and simplify our lives a bit in the process’”.

“The whole thing happened very quickly. Which is typical us”, continues Bruce. “Among other things, I’d become

move was this desire to simplify our lives. We’re looking towards our next stage:

calming down, working less, and enjoying life a bit more”. When they viewed the

Aberdeen Square house it was bare bones. “Being an architect does help you visualise what the end result could be, “ explained Bruce. “And we felt this house was ‘us’.”

The Stuarts knew, from the outset, that their existing furniture – many of their treasured personal possessions – simply would not

suit the new house. “We’d used an interior designer before, so we realised this was

our chance to do something completely different,” Bruce continues.

“You can build a house without using an

architect, but you’re unlikely to get such a

good end result. I think the same is true when it comes to interior design.”

Life in Aberdeen Square is particularly

sociable. The neighbours began inviting the Stuarts to block parties before they even

moved in. “That’s another great thing about the design of the house,: wherever you are inside, you feel connected to the outside,.”

adds Bruce. “We had blinds fitted, but to be quite honest, we hardly ever use them.” There are still a few jobs left to do

around the house. Being keen gardeners, Sheila and Bruce want to furnish multiple decks and balconies with planters, – but the end is firmly in sight.

“All the work has been worthwhile,” adds

Sheila. “It’s a beautiful place, – and we know we’re going to love living here.”

GRAND ILLUSION YOUR HOME WITH @TONISABSTYLE

BY TONI SABATINO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RIKKI SNYDER

I often joke about interior design being part inspiration, part mea-

suring tape, part drawing pad and part magic. Magic, as in creating an illusion with smoke and mirrors. Art Deco, also known as Style Moderne, has roots from the Exposition Internationale des Arts

Decoratifs et Industiels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925. Common

knowledge holds that the original intent was to create an "anti traditional" elegance to symbolize wealth and sophistication. Sleek lines and repetitive geometric shapes are signatures of this iconic style.

This master bathroom is truly Art Deco inspired. The bold black and white

color scheme and the use of geometric patterns are classic examples of the

style. The floor tile was created with water jet technology using polished steel between the stone pieces. The black smoke glass accented wall border was designed to mimic the geometric sophistication. Acrylic faces on the vanity

add depth and shine while the linear knob placement keeps the geometric

theme. Creating an illusion of space in a windowless high rise bathroom can be difficult. I feel that this Art Deco inspiration really did the trick.

BEFORE & AFTER

A WEST COAST COUPLE TAKES THEIR HOME FROM OUTDATED TO REJUVENATED WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY COLLIN KAYSER & ELENA MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLLIN KAYSER & GARRISON HULLINGER

A young couple’s desire to infuse their new home

with an aesthetic that reflected their personality and

style resulted in turning to Garrison Hullinger Interior

Design for their remodel. The couple wanted to dress several main rooms throughout the home’s interior including the dining room, living room and master

bathroom. The project lead, Senior Interior Designer Collin Kayser, gravitated to the home’s alluring rural

setting and charming architecture. He pulled from this for his inspiration to help make their home reflective

of the couple’s vibrant personalities. Kayser candidly reflects on how he made this a dream home for the couple by creating a sophisticated, comfortable, timeless place that felt original to the home.

MASTER BATHROOM: BEFORE – The outdated bathroom

fixtures and surfaces show no sign of the home’s grandeur. Although the master suite is large, the allocation of space did not fit the needs of the current family. A small master closet promoted the re-allocation of space—a prime opportunity to bring life and beauty into the lackluster bathroom. AFTER – Since the couple wanted

a larger walk-in closet, the only solution was to cut into the master bathroom’s square footage. Although 78

| THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE |

embark

the square footage is now smaller, the layout was greatly improved. Removing the fireplace, eliminating the tub surround, and creating a more size appropriate shower, allowed for a new linen cabinet and a larger double vanity. To achieve an elegant master bathroom retreat, surfaces, textures, and fixtures were selected to blend refined and rustic; this was accomplished through the use of distressed porcelain wood plank tile flooring and warm wood tones in the cabinetry contrasted with the white tongue and groove cottage-like walls, polished fixtures, and Carrara marble.

LIVING ROOM: BEFORE – The fireplace is

confused and lacks refinement. It is the focal point in the room, but lacks interest and appeal. The light colored wooden mantel dates the space and competes with the cherry flooring. The saturated blue walls and ornamental wall sconces added to the design confusion.

80

| THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE |

embark

AFTER – For budgetary reasons,

it was determined that the fireplace surround was to stay intact. A few fresh coats of paint, natural stone accents, and a custom fireplace screen add new life to the once dated fireplace. With new wall sconces, a light and subtle wall color, and placing the room’s TV over the mantel, the fireplace now stands as the focal point. The room is now filled with texture, depth, and contrast and brings home a new style more reflective of the family living there.

EMBARK WITH US

DINING ROOM: BEFORE – The formal dining

room was incompletely furnished and lacked general interest. The clients’ busy schedule resulted in using the space as a temporary “catch-all” instead of a functional dining room. Artwork and décor were haphazardly placed, kitchenware covered the tabletop, and an original boxstore chandelier hung from the high ceiling. The footprint and high ceilings created an excellent opportunity for a quick fix.

AFTER - The dining room boasts

high ceilings, so in an effort to make the room feel more intimate and keep costs down, it was suggested to faux paint the ceiling while using the original wall color. Kayser custom designed a built-in dining hutch at the back wall. The hutch grounds the space and creates much needed storage. As a finishing touch, a new transitional light fixture, dining room furniture, rug, and accessories were added to complete the overall design in the dining room.

place to stay, photos of hotel properties line the walls.

Unlike today you were picking your hotel somewhat blind.

Once seeing my hotel, I knew

it was too big and impersonal for me. Being a fan of small, rather intimate properties, I made a few calls regarding availability, did some

I knew that most folks who told me

they were an actor, writer or musician were nothing more than still aspiring to ‘make it’. So I asked him how it

It was a clear night and on the ride home the Southern Cross made a

me and asked if I knew whom I had been talking to all night. I replied, “Eric”? And he said “yes”. “What

The next day I went off to explore the island in my jeep. As I was going up a hill to perch myself at the perfect locale to photograph the sunset, a truck heading down stopped

not Eric’s forte and I did have to bite my tongue when he lamented as to why his relationship with a 19 year old island girl wasn’t working.

Eventually we made our way up to view the sunset and hung around chatting while waiting for the sun

with the writer for the Daily Mail, his wife and the PR fellow so I had to

TRENDING HARDWARE WITH ACCLAIMED DESIGNER ERIC COHLER + AMEROCK Eric Cohler is highly acclaimed for his distinguishing ability to fuse classical and contemporary elements.

Dubbed “The Mixmaster” by industry editors, Cohler’s

interior spaces display layers of unusual texture and color, and he is known for his carefully curated eclecticism.

From his visit to Paris in January for Maison et Objet, Eric shared that one of the hottest trends coming across the Atlantic is copper, with unlacquered brass and bronze

to follow. The designer notes that copper, unlacquered

brass and bronze are “living finishes,” because the more you touch them, the more they change. The patina that

these finishes develop over time is organic, and unique

to each piece, which in Eric explained, further enhances their desirability and beauty.

The new Brushed Copper finish from Amerock®

is both timeless and on-trend, as New York-based interior designer Eric Cohler observes. Here, the award-winning Cohler shares his own ideas and insights on working with copper:

WARM IS HOT. “Copper, along with its chromatic cousins – brass, bronze and gold – brings a sense

of warmth to the home. I love copper because it’s elemental,” says Cohler.

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS. Cohler sees copper as a supremely versatile design element. Pairing it with

natural wood, leather, or glass, Cohler says, creates a “calm, elegant impression” in any environment.

Combining a range of metal finishes is one of Cohler’s

favorite creative strategies. “Especially in the bath, I don’t like fittings that are identical, that match everything in the room. By changing them up, you get a layered effect which is visually interesting.”

94

| THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE |

embark

EMBARK WITH US “More than other metals, copper can assume a

unique persona,” he says. “Depending on how it’s

finished, the metal plays

differently in the light. For example, a hammered

sink has shadowing on its

surface; a polished faucet catches the eye with its

shine; a brushed or matte

finish adds depth and detail.”

But there are limits to

copper’s compatibility.

Cohler cautions, “I wouldn’t mix it too much with the

primary colors, especially

red, because that’s a part of copper’s base tone.”

CABINET MEETINGS. When it comes to

decorative hardware for cabinets, a coordinated

look is still the most popular among homeowners. For the more adventurous,

Cohler proposes modified mixing of hardware. “As

long as you’re consistent— for instance, all the wall

cupboards are fitted with brass, and all the base

cabinets and drawers have copper hardware—this

approach will work. Don’t change the scheme with every other door.”

SIBEL KOCABASI ARCINIEGA

Kocabasi’s work is distinctive for its combination of Turkish traditional art technique with a contemporary willingness to experiment, constantly testing new ideas and techniques. The past, present and future exist together in her work. Moreover, mixing the narrative style of manuscript illumination with vivid abstractions, her paintings are filled with historical references, and commentary on the conflicts of our era— religion, control of natural resources and our regard for the planet. Sibel’s work uses decorative patterns and social/cultural references content to achieve a balance of contrasting elements, emphasizing the beauty and misfortune of humanity’s impact on nature in a single statement. Her latest series focuses on the co-existence between humans and animals which shows us humor & beauty as well as the frustrations in this relationship. “I still believe in the ability of art to be a beautiful thing. In fact, beauty and hope are the strongest means to protest injustice,” Kocabasi explained. “Not just political injustice but also the ugliness of environmental degradation. In the

Kocabasi is the recipient of the 2006 Hector Ubertalli Visual Arts Award and the 2010 South Florida Cultural Consortium’s Visual and Media Artists Fellowship.

Kocabasi was born in Turkey and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Turkish Traditional Arts (rug-kilim design, natural dyes, conservation and restoration of textiles, and illumination of manuscripts) from Marmara University of Fine Arts in Istanbul.
