how to handle the workload. Meanwhile, Syd had worked

for six years to build a start-up digital marketing firm that was acquired and left him searching for a new start-up to dive into. He soon realized there was the perfect candidate right in front of him.

This Maida Vale apartment has undergone an enormous transformation to become an airy, light-filled space. From the beginning of the project, our

clients wanted a home that was bright, modern and engaging. We took to this brief by designing an open plan living

and dining area flooded with light, with

clever storage, to create a layered space that is not only beautiful, but works. Our material considerations were to create a

classic style that would never date, and chose a striking, but restrained palette.

Our clients, a young and energetic

Australian couple with a newborn baby, felt their home should reflect their lifestyle and taste, and they are thrilled with the results.

The kitchen went from dim and

cramped, to a total realignment with a generous island bench wrapped in

honed Carrara marble, breakfast bar

with linen upholstery, and gorgeous, minimal cabinetry.

The open plan living and dining space benefit from the

high ceilings, and to make the most of this, the palette remained refined. A large gas fire brings a hearth to the room, and carefully chosen furniture was imported

from Jardan Melbourne to compliment the space.

The difficulty with this design was that there was

no precedent for this type of work in the Mansion

block. Our clients and our central concept to open up the space had not been approved before and there was some resistance to the idea initially. We worked

around this disinclination through careful planning, patience, and adherence to regulation.

Prior to the renovation, the property

was overgrown with cacti and weeds, the children were unable to play in the front yard and the maintenance was overwhelming. My goal was to provide

a place where they could spend time

together as a family and entertain friends, but also have some privacy from passing traffic.

The back yard design includes a

vegetable bed (used for vegetables

and cut flowers) and a pre-existing shade structure with brick fireplace

and barbecue. We also added a brick patio along the back of the house for

lounging and a ping-pong table. We recycled the existing brick that was already on site.

The plants were selected to suit the

coastal southern California climate. We

chose a subtle color palette of whites, greens, pinks and purples.

TOM DIXON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEER LINDGREEN

Life often gives you few opportunities to really seize and make your mark. It's up to you whether you want to take that risk or not. It is often this decision that separates visionaries and creators from the rest of us. Tom Dixon is, in our opinion, one of those visionaries. With his passion and perseverance, he created a design empire that we at Embark simply admire. Our opportunity to interview him was something we gladly embraced, and we are delighted to share his perspectives on design and what he has in store!

Q

WHAT LEAD YOU IN THE DIRECTION OF BECOMING A DESIGNER? WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INCLINATION

THAT YOU WERE GOING TO BE A DESIGNER (THAT MANY WOULD ADMIRE)?

I was a late developer. I have no training in design. I started making objects when I was a musician and

had many free hours during the day, as my work was mainly at night. After trying Art College for six months, I broke a leg in a motorcycle accident, and

gave up education in favour of a career as a bass

guitarist in a disco band. After another fortuitous

motorcycle accident, where I was unable to join the band on tour, I discovered welding, and driven by

my enthusiasm for making functional forms in metal, I began a series of radical experiments in shape and

material. There was no real turning point, but I was very active in designing and making new things – I always had many ideas and was lucky.

Q

WHAT IS IT LIKE SEEING HOME DESIGN THROUGH YOUR EYES?

Some days I work as a designer, but the bits that really interest me are the invention, engineering and marketing rather than the actual process of

designing. I think that effective designers tend to be interested in the whole chain. Robin Day, Verner Panton and all those people really felt that they were going to change everything through design. It’s a

very humbling way to look at it. I think designers now

are more concerned about the shape of the object and their own personal evolution within it. And I

think a good designer is somebody who manages

to put together all the elements – an understanding of materials and a belief in improving functionality –

then puts the shape on last as a result of all those experiments. I’m a designer very occasionally. I tend

to be on the periphery, occasionally popping out a product which is designed mainly through an interest in materials and technologies.

Q

WHAT

WOULD

BE

SOMETHING

DESIGNERS

SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONSIDERATE OF IN THEIR CAREERS?

One of the hardest things in such an image-rich world is to stop yourself from becoming overwhelmed by

outside influences. It is very important to establish

your own point of view and develop your own distinctive design personality and aesthetic.

Q

IF THERE IS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, ANY ONE PLACE YOU COULD CONSIDER YOUR “FOUNTAIN OF INSPIRATION,” WHERE WOULD THAT PLACE BE AND WHY? Everything inspires me. Bridges and planes and

museums and travel and sculpture and space exploration and music and metalwork. I have always been inspired by the no-nonsense approach of

industrial artifacts and military engineering, science and mathematics, alongside materials and processes for manufacture. I try and understand where the thing will be made, and I try and challenge the brief

and make sure I am not repeating something that already exists. I very rarely think of the final shape of

an object , or the surface before I start … I am always thinking of the material possibilities , the potential of

the factory , and the structure of the object … which means that I am a Vertebrate designer , rather than an invertebrate.

Q

WHAT IS A CURRENT PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING

ON RIGHT NOW THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

OR RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECT? WHAT WAS FULFILLING ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE?

THE RESTAURANT, our project for Milan Design. It was a series of four extraordinary sculptural kitchens in collaboration with Caesarstone. Each kitchen cooks on course and services its corresponding

dining hall arrayed in a cruciform building. The four

kitchens were inspired by the elements; earth, water, fire and air.

On a wooded lot in Burlington, Ontario this warm and inviting open

concept space was inspired by West Coast Design, and the beauty found in nature and organic elements. A busy family of four, who enjoys

casual entertaining hired Kate Davidson Design to prepare the plans, custom millwork and finishes for the extensive home renovation.

In the daytime, the space shines with abundant natural light filtering

through the oversized black painted windows. Window treatments

were omitted to showcase the statement windows and not distract from

the view. In the evening the layers of lighting that we introduced offer warmth and highlights the architectural elements of the space. With

square recessed, trim less pot lights, modern hanging fixtures and

accent lighting in the valance and millwork, the layers of light casts a glow throughout the space. 52

When we began the renovation process

working on the new layout of the home, the addition of a sunken living space was added at the back of the home while the dining room, kitchen and mudroom were

re-arranged to create a better flow for this open concept main floor.

What makes this space stand out

is the use of rich and luxurious finishes. We used the exotic hardwood - Sapele for the flooring and horizontal grained book matched custom cabinetry in the

kitchen, dining room and family room. The Sapele’s matte Rubio finish highlights

the wood’s warmth and depth. The use of honed granite on the island, a statuario marble slab on the feature wall above the stove and clean white quartz on the

counter overlooking the family room all combined add depth to a rich palate.

A major design feature in this main

floor open concept area is the valance and

lighbox that surrounds all three spaces. This ceiling detail unifies the three areas

together while functioning as a light source

with recessed pot lights and adding visual height and dimension to the ceiling.

For the major renovation of this 1928 home, we

discover the value that Novell Design Build brought

to an older home in need of a facelift. Using creativity, integrated disciplines and innovative solutions they

introduced modern and functional living ideas to spaces that were never designed with its present homeowner in mind.

The project had clear intention and purpose from

the beginning; to rejuvenate and optimize modern living in a home that had been the victim of multiple awkward renovations over different decades. It was in

need of thoughtful design and planning to restore the

home with respect to its original architectural character, yet allow new accommodations for a growing modern family.

The plan here was to re-plan the entire house, lift

the roof, while undisturbing the existing foundations

and without compromise to the original craftsman front faรงade aesthetic. The interior open floor plan has been opened up to allow for ease and flow of

functions from living, dining, kitchen and outdoor

deck space; priority areas for the homeowner who

loves to entertain. Vaulted ceilings and designer lighting pieces celebrate the interior volumes of the house and create a special feeling of distinction as the built-ins respond to the space.

This project also afforded the transformation of the ground

identity is not tied to these infamous establishments. Duffy is his own person. He has taken his experience to

Duffy explains the philosophy. “Thoughtful is around

what you enjoy eating. I never put on the menu what I don’t eat.”

It’s this continual push to be innovative that drives the

team at Grace. “We are the biggest critics in anything we do. I am always pushing forward and applying the

Even at a young age, Duffy had this innate inner

compass to propel himself forward, with a clear vision

of what he wanted to do. He started cooking at 14, decided to become a professional chef in his late high school years, becoming addicted to the love of being

in the kitchen. “There are noises in the kitchen that I cannot go without,” he says, even up to present day.

as a kind of David vs. Goliath tale, but Duffy’s own selfperception doesn’t resonate with this thinking.

“I don’t think I ever had the mindset (of being an

underdog). I knew what I wanted to do and was going to do it regardless. What happened in my past catapulted

that and I put on the biggest blinders that put me on the straight and narrow.”

It is Duffy’s clarity of vision and resoluteness

Duffy is not standing still. His plan is to open other for his next project. “I know I want to do this. It’s just a matter of time of when I feel comfortable to proceed,” he says.

Above the success and the rising of his stature as

a chef, entrepreneur, restauranteur and leader in the industry, what has captured our attention is Duffy’s

inner strength and openness to share his struggles. His ability to remain true to himself has inspired millions of

COLOR

KITCH E N

written and photographyed by

Linda Mazur

The kitchen has and probably always will be, the heart of any home but if you’re feeling that your kitchen is

lacking in personality, then rest assured it doesn’t take much to inject a bit life into your space. A little bit of

color in your kitchen can go a long way in transforming your basic white or neutral kitchen into an attractive living space with charm.

Yes it’s true that neutral kitchens will always continue

to maintain their popularity, and for obvious reasons. Your kitchen is an expensive and time consuming room to renovate, therefore staying relatively neutral

allows you to maximize the longevity of your space, as well as your investment. That said neutral does not need to equal boring. Consider the great range of kitchen accessories available to us, a fantastic way of

bringing color and character into this well-used room. Over the last couple of years we have been seeing color emerge in both large and small appliances. If

you’re looking for a new range, perhaps you should

consider injecting some color with this great gas range from Bertazzoni, available in numerous different colors with stainless steel accents.

110

THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE

discovering home

As a designer, I also like to inject color in my kitchens with fabric and furniture.

Consider this beautiful

custom-made banquette from Silva Custom Furniture. The rich blue is a wonderful addition to any space and

the banquette itself is a good compliment to many different design styles.

It’s all about color this spring!

Find your

inspiration and punch up your kitchen…don’t be afraid of having a bit of fun.

Many of the smaller appliances on

the market are also being manufactured in an array of fun and whimsical options

that can spark some life to your counter tops. Breville has introduced their Barista

Express beverage station in a gorgeous cranberry red, Kitchen-Aid has an array

of fun colors for their stand mixers, or

perhaps it’s the Dualit retro toaster in yellow that has caught your eye!

If you’re the more adventurous type, colored cabinetry may be your way of dramatizing your space.

This kitchen

with red high-gloss cabinets is a good

demonstration of injecting color into a contemporary neutral black and stainless kitchen; and the addition of the ceiling

fan from Royal Lighting really completes the modern industrial aesthetic.
