How do I start my day, you ask? Well, I’m the luckiest girl alive because I love to walk and I just happen to live in the Historic Sandwich Village. I sit on my front porch with a cup of coffee and meditate on the natural beauty that surrounds me while contemplating which path I will take that day. If I seek solace, I head to Heritage Museums and Gardens for a walk through the hundred acres of beautifully landscaped grounds with ever changing color. To socialize and get the buzz of what’s happening in town I head to Main Street and pop into the Sandwich Arts Alliance to see the new exhibit and poke in the gift shop - next stop Jarves and Main to pick up something special for my clients or friends (or myself)around the corner to Collections to scout out a great handmade treasure - then a stop at Beth's Bakery & Cafe for a coffee break and then back home with a stop at the Brown Jug to pick up a delicious sandwich and a stop at the library to rest a bit. PS: On a day that I hear the beach calling me I’ll skip the shops and head to the Sandwich Boardwalk instead to refresh my soul with cool ocean breezes and sand in my toes. Every day looks different up close and the scenery never disappoints!
If you want to start your day in Sandwich right , try going down to Cafe Chew off route 6A. I always get the guest brew to be a little adventurous. The breakfast menu is great but today I settle for a Jordan Marsh blueberry muffin. After that I make my way down to the old Sandwich Town Hall on Main Street, right next the to the Dexter Gristmill,. Step between the columns and open one of the large front doors and enter the Sandwich Arts Alliance. On your right is a wonderful gift shop filled with hand made items, from jewelry and pottery to artwork and stained glass. If you go a little further down the hallway on your left is the gallery which alway has an art show hanging. You can fill out a ballot to help choose the peoples choice award for that show. The gallery is filled with books written by local authors. When you leave the Town Hall please check out the architecture and history of our town. You will not be disappointed !

My family of 4 loves a day in Sandwich. The perfect day for us is a bike ride or walk down the Cape Cod Canal with a stop at the playground for the kiddos! After that, dinner at Seafood Sam’s is a must (perfect for families with young kids). I highly recommend their Lobster Roll Plate (I grew up in Maine, so I know a good lobster roll) and their coleslaw is the best around. After dinner, a walk down the new Sandwich Boardwalk at Sunset is so relaxing and a great way to walk of dinner. No summer evening is complete without a stop for ice cream. We love both Shipwreck and Twin Acres, but the kids love visiting the animals at Shipwreck.

I am always inspired by walking lovely Water, Grove and Main Streets, and their adjoining side streets, taking in the rich architectural tapestry of our village. From 17th century early-American to 20th century Greek revival structures, Sandwich Village is entirely unique as it offers vistas of each architectural era in America. Within a 15 minute walk, one can visit a working 17th century Dexter Gristmill, admire handsome Greek Doric columns of the old Town Hall, stroll past several different styles of polychrome Victorians, or delight in the perfectly proportioned entryways of early and mid-18th century cottages — all beautifully scaled and set within a charming framework of grand trees and gardens or against the peaceful backdrop of Shawme Pond. I have walked our village countless mornings over the years, marveling at its design and history, and continue to see (and learn) something new each time.

I have so many favorite ways to wind down, and Sandwich offers many choices- meeting friends for a glass of wine after work at one of the many out door venues in town or by the canal, going to the boardwalk, attending Open Mic night at St. James Church or a Sound Bath at Lotus and Rose, watching the sunset from the deck at the Treehouse Brewing Company. Just walking around town admiring the lit trees in the evening, listening to the town band on the library lawn.

When I have out of town guests visit me here in Sandwich, I always make sure I take them to our town’s two historic sites: The Hoxie House, considered the oldest on Cape Cod, and The Dexter Gristmill
The experience of “living history” found in these two 17th. Century museum sites never fails to impress, especially those who are experiencing New England for the first time. They continue to recall their visits to these sites over anything else I might have them experience.
I like to kick off my summer mornings with a Mexican iced latte from SipJack Coffee—she truly makes the best coffee in town. And when I need an extra boost, an iced coffee from Nana’s Café hits the spot. Most of my days are spent working at Modern Vintage and Modern Vintage Bridal, but after work. if I’m not driving the kids to Align Dance Training or picking them up from the Boardwalk, I love meeting friends for a handcrafted cocktail at The Seal. On a day off, there’s nothing better than heading out with our family to Sandy Neck ORV—it’s our happy place. When it’s not a beach day, we like to swing by the Sandwich Co-Op for a little shopping, grab a Hillport Burger at Off the Grid, and treat ourselves to something sweet at The Sweetish Fish candy truck. The kids love to end their day with ice cream from Shipwrecked or Twin Acres. And for dinner dates, my husband and I love Fishermen’s View or sipping drinks at the outdoor bar at The Pilot House. It’s a plus when there is live music at both locations!

Tour this living timeline and discover unique historical features: peer through an authentic courting door, experience the comfort of a 17th-century rope bed, and examine precious Wing family heirlooms. Stroll through the meticulously maintained colonial kitchen garden, where herbs and vegetables grow just as they did centuries ago.
The adjacent Wing History Museum chronicles 300 years of Wing family descendants across America. The compelling "Whaling Wings" exhibit honors the many Wing sea captains who sailed the world's oceans in pursuit of whales, including the story of the J & WR Wing Company's prize vessel, the Charles W. Morgan—the most successful wooden whaling ship ever constructed.

A Walk Through Sandwich trails
Golden morning light filters through Sandwich, Massachusetts, illuminating a network of conservation areas and walking trails that reveal the town's natural character. Beyond the historic downtown, these protected spaces offer quiet escapes into forests, wetlands, and waterfront paths.
Boyden Farm encompasses 48 acres along Peter's Pond, where a peaceful trail winds through varied habitats. The property attracts both wildlife and visitors seeking a gentle walk through meadows and woodland edges. Bird songs punctuate the stillness as the path follows the pond's shoreline.
The Briar Patch extends across 166 acres behind the Green Briar Nature Center, creating one of the area's most expansive conservation areas. Native wildflowers bloom throughout the seasons while mature trees provide shade and shelter. The interconnected trails here reveal the diversity of Cape Cod's inland ecosystems.
Cape Cod Canal Bike Paths offer a different perspective, with paved surfaces running alongside the canal's engineered waterway. The flat terrain accommodates walkers, cyclists, and runners while providing unobstructed views across the water. The canal's industrial heritage blends with the coastal landscape in unexpected ways.
Cooks Farm Conservation Lands spans 133 acres under the stewardship of the Thornton W. Burgess Society. The property demonstrates how community organizations preserve local landscapes for future generations. Multiple trail options allow visitors to explore different sections of this varied terrain.
Elinor's Woods, tucked away near Richards Way in East Sandwich, provides a more intimate forest experience. The canopy creates natural architecture overhead while filtering light onto the trail below. This smaller preserve offers solitude within walking distance of residential neighborhoods.
These conservation areas form a network of accessible natural spaces throughout Sandwich. Each property has its own character—from waterfront walks to deep woods—yet together they represent the community's commitment to preserving the landscapes that define this corner of Cape Cod. Whether seeking a morning walk or an afternoon of exploration, these trails provide year-round opportunities to connect with the region's natural heritage.

Sandwich offers a diverse collection of beaches along Cape Cod's shores, from quiet boardwalk spots to expansive state reservations. Here's what you need to know about each location.
Ocean Beaches
Town Neck Beach serves as Sandwich's charming boardwalk destination on Wood Avenue. This unguarded beach offers a classic Cape Cod experience with its wooden walkway leading to the shore, perfect for leisurely strolls and family outings.
First Beach on Town Neck Road provides a more secluded ocean experience without lifeguards, ideal for visitors seeking a quieter alternative to the busier beach areas.
East Sandwich Beach along North Shore Boulevard strikes a balance between amenities and tranquility. During peak season, you'll find parking attendants and restroom facilities, making it convenient for day-long visits while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere.
Sandy Neck Beach stands out as the crown jewel of the area's beaches. This expansive stretch requires four-wheel drive permits for vehicle access to remote areas, though daily passes are available at the gatehouse. The main beach area features full amenities including restrooms, showers, a snack bar, and seasonal lifeguards. Adventure seekers can explore hiking trails, with brochures available to guide their journey through this pristine coastal environment.
Scusset Beach State Reservation offers the most comprehensive beach experience in the region. Located on Scusset Beach Road in Sagamore Beach, this state-managed facility provides camping opportunities alongside traditional beach activities. Visitors can enjoy fishing, dining at the snack bar, and using shower facilities after a day on the sand.
Freshwater Options
For those preferring lake swimming, Peters Pond at Oakcrest Cove welcomes non-residents with daily passes available for purchase on-site. The calmer waters make this an excellent choice for families with young children.
Snake Pond and Wakeby Lake at Ryder Conservation Lands are exclusively reserved for Sandwich residents, offering pristine freshwater swimming in a more private setting.
Planning Your Visit
Beach access requires proper permits, with resident stickers starting at $35 for the first vehicle and non-resident passes at $105 for most town beaches. Daily ($20) and weekly ($50) options provide flexibility for shorter stays. Remember that Sandy Neck and Scusset Beach have separate fee structures and requirements.
Lifeguard services operate from late June through early September, typically from 10am to 4pm where staffing allows. Whether you're drawn to the ocean's endless horizon or prefer the calm of freshwater ponds, Sandwich's beaches offer something for every coastal enthusiast.

This scenic 2.8-mile loop, clearly marked with signs and sharrows, connects the Cape Cod Canal to historic Sandwich village center.
The Route:
Begin at the eastern terminus of the canal path near Sandwich Marina. Follow Freezer Road, then turn right onto Tupper Road. Exercise caution when turning left at the traffic light onto Route 6A, then make your next right onto Jarves Street toward the village heart. (For a scenic detour, turn left to visit the town's famous Boardwalk instead.)
The marked route continues right from Jarves Street onto Main Street. Before following the official route left onto River Street, consider extending to the end of Main Street where you'll discover a charming park featuring bike racks, seasonal restrooms, and benches. Across the street via crosswalk, you can explore Sandwich Town Hall, the historic grist mill, and an artesian well perfect for refilling water bottles.
Dining & Amenities:
Multiple eateries throughout the village offer perfect rest stops. Bike racks are strategically placed at beaches, public buildings, parks, and the Sandwich Welcome Center on Route 130, with additional racks added annually.
Beyond the Village Loop:
Mountain biking enthusiasts should explore Shawme-Crowell State Forest and the single-track trails between Oak Ridge School and Corpus Christi Parish off Quaker Meetinghouse Road. These trails connect to Maple Swamp Conservation Area (parking on Service Road between Mill Road and Noel Henry Drive), creating nearly 50 miles of trails highlighted by a panoramic lookout platform atop Nye Mountain with Cape Cod Bay views.
BMX riders can enjoy the Cape Cod BMX track off Quaker Meetinghouse Road between Cotuit Road and Route 130.
Future Connections:
Sandwich's Bikeway & Pedestrian Committee is developing a designated route linking the village to an upcoming multi-use path along Service Road, which will eventually connect to the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Their 2018 master plan focuses on creating safer connections between commercial centers, recreational areas, neighborhoods, and schools throughout town.
More information about the committee is available at tinyurl.com/sandwichbikeway
