Come sono i pulsanti degli orologi a carica manuale?
What are the push buttons like on hand-wound watches?
Per le ref 6239, 6241, 6262 e 6264, i pulsanti sono a pompa modello 24-P3. È possibile trovare per queste referenze anche i pulsanti a vite di fornitura, questo dovuto alle sostituzioni fatte durante il servizio di manutenzione, per migliorare l’impermeabilità della cassa. Per le ref. 6240, 6263, 6265, 6269 e 6270, i pulsanti sono a vite (Patente Rolex del 1964). Esistono tre generazioni di pulsanti a vite, la prima con pulsanti zigrinati chiamata dai collezionisti “Millerighe” che venivano montati sulla ref. 6240 e solo inizialmente sulle ref. 6263 e 6265, mentre i pulsanti scanalati (24-P301 e 24-P302) si trovano sulle ref. 6263, 6265, 6269 e 6270. Da notare che sovente durante il servizio di manutenzione, venivano sostituiti i pulsanti zigrinati “Millerighe” con quelli scanalati di fornitura che erano piú pratici all’uso. Rolex definisce i pulsanti a vite “Pulsanti a vite a tenuta stagna”.
References 6239, 6241, 6262 and 6264 have pump 24-P3 push buttons. For these references, one sometimes also finds replacement pressure-proof screwdown push buttons, possibly fitted during a maintenance service in order to improve the water-tightness of the case. References 6240, 6263, 6265, 6269 and 6270 have pressure-proof screw-down buttons (1964 Rolex patent). There are three generations of pressure-proof screw-down push buttons: the first with knurled buttons, nicknamed “Millerighe” by collectors, fitted on reference 6240 and only initially on the references 6263 and 6265; the second and third with fluted buttons of the 24-P301 and 24-P302 type for references 6263, 6265, 6269 and 6270. It is important to note that during maintenance services, Rolex often used to replace knurled “Millerighe” buttons by factory-made spare-part fluted buttons, which were more user-friendly. Rolex uses the expression “pressure-proof screwdown push buttons” to refer to its water-resistant screw-down push buttons.

Where are the reference and series numbers engraved?
La referenza è sempre incisa tra le anse superiori alle ore 12, mentre il numero di produzione è inciso tra le anse alle ore 6, entrambi al pantografo. Dalla fine degli anni ‘60 nelle casse in oro è riportata la scritta “REGISTERED DESIGN” e nelle ultime produzioni “ORIG. ROLEX DESIGN”, simili scritte anche per le casse in acciaio “REGISTERED DESIGN, STAINLESS STEEL e ORIG. ROLEX DESIGN”.
The reference is always engraved between the upper horns, at 12 o’clock, while the series number is engraved between the horns at 6 o’clock. From the late 1960s onwards, for gold cases, the words “REGISTERED DESIGN” were engraved between the horns, replaced on the later productions by “ORIG. ROLEX DESIGN”. Steel cases also carry the inscription “REGISTERED DESIGN”, along with “STAINLESS STEEL” and “ORIG. ROLEX DESIGN”.

Praticamente tutti i movimenti Cosmograph hanno le specifiche per essere definiti Cronometri, solo quelli che hanno inciso sulla platina il numero di produzione sono movimenti che hanno ottenuto il Certificato di Cronometria del C.O.S.C. Dal 1970 tutti i modelli in oro sono Cronometri, ma solo dalla metà degli anni ‘70 portano la scritta “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” e sono accompagnati da un certificato di Cronometria. Tutti gli orologi con le ref. 6269 e 6270 sono certificati cronometri e marcati sui quadranti standard, mentre non portano la scritta i quadranti pavè di diamanti.
Virtually all Cosmograph movements feature the characteristics of a chronometer-worthy movement, but only movements bearing a production number engraved on the mainplate have earned the COSC Chronometer Rating Certificate. From 1970 onwards, all the gold models are chronometers but only from the mid-1970s do they bear the legend “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” and are accompanied by a Chronometer Rating Certificate. References 6269 and 6270 are chronometer-certified; the inscription appears on standard dials, but not on the paved-set diamonds dial.

Negli anni ‘60 la scritta DAYTONA appariva solo nei manuali d’istruzioni Rolex destinati al mercato americano, per quello italiano solo COSMOGRAPHE. Dagli inizi degli anni ‘70 i manuali cambiano formato e non riportano ancora in copertina la scritta DAYTONA, ma dalla fine del decennio la copertina cambia e appare “DAYTONA” in colore rosso così come sui modelli in acciaio. Tra il 1983 e il 1984 la copertina si rinnova, mantenendo però la scritta DAYTONA in rosso, qui troviamo il cambio d’impermeabilità dell’orologio da 50 a 100 metri (pur mantenendo le stesse identiche immagini degli orologi del manuale precedente).
In the 1960’s, the writing DAYTONA only appeared in the Rolex instruction booklets intended for the American market; in the ones for the Italian market only COSMOGRAPHE appeared. Starting in the early 70’s, instruction booklets changed format and though the writing DAYTONA did not yet appear on their cover; starting at the end of that decade, however, the cover changed and the writing “DAYTONA” appeared in red color as well as on the stainless steel watch models. Between 1983 and 1984 the cover was given a make over, which kept the word DAYTONA in red, while the watch waterproof rating altered from 50 to 100 meters (watch pictures remaining the same ones of the previous booklet).

How many dial makers were used by Rolex for the series 16500?
Per i quadranti, Rolex ha utilizzato quattro diversi fabbricanti: Singer, a La Chauxde-Fonds per i modelli classici laccati e galvanizzati, Beyeler di Ginevra per i quadranti laccati, galvanizzati ed anche per alcune piccole serie di “creazioni gioielleria”, la Stern di Ginevra per i quadranti “creazione” in pietre semipreziose, madreperla e pavé di brillanti e Lemrich a La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Rolex employed four different manufacturers: Singer at La Chaux-de-Fonds for lacquered and galvanized classical models; Beyeler in Geneva for lacquered and galvanized dials and also some short series of jewelry models; Stern in Geneva for their creations in semi-precious stones, mother of pearl and pavé brilliants, Lemrich in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
I quadranti della serie 16500 hanno il logo al posto del 12, la marca e le specificità sotto. Il logo Rolex è identico per tutti i quadranti anche se prodotti da quattro differenti manifatture. Le fasce dei contatori esistono in almeno due dimensioni: strette o larghe, i caratteri grafici e il posizionamento delle scritte cambiano.
On the dials of the series 16500, the 12 is replaced by the logo and is surmounted by the inscription giving the specifics of the watch. The Rolex logo is identical for all dials even though they were produced by four different manufacturers. The rings of the totalizers are available in at least two sizes: narrow or wide, fonts and writing position changes.
Alla fine degli anni ‘80, la marca Rolex e le specifiche poste sul quadrante non vengono più stampate utilizzando clichè incisi a mano, ma utilizzando clichè realizzati con fotoincisione ad acido che permettono una stampa di maggior qualità definita anche nei minimi dettagli.
At the end of the 1980s, the process for affixing the name ROLEX and the technical characteristics change. The transferring plate is no longer handengraved, instead an acid process is used which allows a better quality even in the slightest details.

Ci sono varie grafiche per le scritte sul quadrante, Rolex ha cercato di variarne il posizionamento per ottenere un quadrante graficamente perfetto.
The inscriptions appear in a variety of ways since Rolex always looked for ways to vary their position so as to obtain a graphically perfect dial.
Il fondo del quadrante nella produzione classica può essere champagne, nero, bianco e bianco laccato lucido (chiamato dai collezionisti “porcellanato”, ma prodotto solo per un brevissimo periodo nel 1988/89). Da notare che alcuni di questi quadranti “smaltati” sono personalizzati per Tiffany.
For the classic models, the background color of the dial could be champagne, black, white and brilliant lacquered white (incorrectly called “enamel” by collectors and produced only during three short periods from 1988 to 1989). It is worth noting that some “enamel” dials were personalized for Tiffany.

I quadranti ausiliari della serie 16500 sono bordati da un anello in metallo lucido, rodiato o dorato, le corone graduate dei contatori sono sia brillanti che opache sabbiate. Generalmente i quadranti ausiliari hanno quest’ultime in contrasto con il colore del fondo per facilitare la lettura.
With auxiliary dials edged with a ring of brilliant metal, treated with rhodium or gilded, the graduations of the totalizers are held within the ring, sometimes brilliant and sometimes opaque grained. Generally the auxiliary dials contrast with the background color in order to increase legibility.
La scritta “DAYTONA” è quasi sempre in rosso o bordeaux, più raramente dorata (vedi pag. 213), anche se cambierà la grafica e la posizione sopra il contatore delle ore.
The word “DAYTONA” is always in red or bordeaux (and more rare, gilded - see at page 213), regardless of the silkscreen variations or the positioning on the hours’ totalizer.
Nel 1988 la marca e le scritte delle specificità sono su 5 linee, mentre il nome del modello ha un’interspazio di una riga. I collezionisti americani lo chiamano “floating dial”, quadrante con scritta fluttuante. Tutte le lettere sono in grassetto. La cifra 6 del contatore delle ore è convergente seguendo la grafica delle altre, verso l’esterno (9). L’interspazio tra “T SWISS MADE T” è molto più ravvicinato che nelle versioni seguenti.
In 1988, the brand name and the inscriptions were spread over five lines with a break of one line for the name of the model. American collectors called this type of dial the “floating dial”. All the characters of the letters were in bold. The number 6 of the hours’ totalizer followed similar characteristics (viewed as 9). The distance between “T SWISS MADE T” is much closer than in later versions.

Altre specificità, compreso il nome del modello hanno piccole differenze. Tutte le lettere restano in carattere snello e meno marcate mentre le cifre dei quadranti ausiliari sono piu marcate e larghe. Alla fine degli anni 1997/8 la spaziatura della scritta “T SWISS MADE T” è identica alla versione precedente.
PERPETUAL From the end of 1993 to 2000 we find (with very few changes) the dial inscriptions in five close but asymmetric lines. This includes the name of the model and small differences. All the letters remain in refined characters and less pronounced even though the numbers of the auxiliary dials are more evident and large. Towards the end of 1997/1998, the distance between the words “T SWISS MADE T” becomes identical to the preceding version.

Tutti i Cosmograph delle serie 116500 sono dei Cronometri dichiarati, anche se non sempre riportano sul quadrante la scritta “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED”. Si ritrova questa anomalia tra i quadranti “gioielleria”. Tutti i Cosmograph sono comunque accompagnati da un certificato di Cronometria C.O.S.C. Il movimento è quindi sempre numerato e il numero visibile.
All the Cosmograph series 116500 are chronometer certified, even if the mention “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” is not systematically indicated on the dial. This anomaly is a characteristic one comes across on jewelry models. In any case, all the watches are accompanied by a Certificate of Chronometry of the C.O.S.C. The movement is always numbered and the number is visible.

Among the exceptions, Patrick Heiniger, ex chairman and managing director of Rolex, had made for himself and several of his close colleagues, a Cosmograph series with special dial in a variety of colors. Sadly the information relating to these objects is insufficient and not verifiable.
