Emanuel pupils are happy, confident and kind, demonstrating high aspirations in all that they do.
Ethos
Pupils, teachers and parents work together in our:
• Teaching and learning, to ensure lessons and daily interactions are full of vitality and inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition.
• Pastoral care, so that every child is recognised, listened to and understood within a community that values the development of spiritual and social understanding.
• Co-curricular and community life, so that every child can enjoy being part of a larger cause, find friendships and develop life-enhancing interests and passions.
Values
We are an ambitious and kind school community. We operate within the framework of our Christian ethos, promoting equality and diversity and upholding fundamental British values, the rule of law and individual liberty. We have a commitment to free-place funding and state partnerships.

Wellbeing
Pupils at Emanuel School are provided with meaningful opportunities to share their experiences, views and hopes about their school, and they understand that it is safe and important for them to do so.
School Council
The school council is a formal group chaired by the pupil voice prefects and consisting of representatives from each year group. School council meetings are scheduled on the school calendar and take place on a termly basis throughout the year.
Each form raises issues through their representatives at a year group council meeting that is chaired by the head of year. A selected agenda item from each year group is then taken to the whole school council meeting by two representatives. This meeting is chaired by the prefects with responsibility for pupil voice. Following each meeting, minutes are circulated to members of the council for approval, and then discussed at SMT level. Actions and outcomes are shared with the school council members for feedback to their peers, and also in year group assemblies throughout the following term.
Archer Advisory Group
The Archer Advisory Group is an important voice within Emanuel School. It is made up of school staff – from across all employee position and pupils of different ages and backgrounds. Its task is to review the school’s curriculum, structures and population, through the lenses of the diverse members of the Emanuel community. The advisory group audits changes already made within the school, as well as devising and advising on new approaches. It has a specific focus on the ways in which we provide education regarding race, anti-racism and forms of inequality and representation in society
The Bridge: Gender Equality and Mutual Respect
This working group (led by pupils in the sixth form) audited changes that have already been made within the school, as well as devising and advising on new approaches. The group had a specific focus on the way the school created an environment where all pupils felt safe, secure and felt able to speak about their concerns, in particular regarding treatment of girls and women within our community, fostering a spirit of mutual respect and gender equality.
Gender equality and mutual respect is now a standing agenda item for each school council meeting to ensure such matters remain prominent within the school. The Bridge meets as required by the school community and to raise items for the school council agenda.
The Charities Committee
The Emanuel community is regularly involved in charity fundraising for nominated school charities and charities selected by the houses, as well as our partner schools in India. The charity committee, consisting of pupils drawn from across the school and supported by the charities co-ordinator, takes the lead in planning and delivering our fundraising events and initiatives. These events are an opportunity for pupils to take control and develop their personal traits such as leadership, creativity, teamwork. The pupils also take an active role in identifying local charities for the school to support.
Eco Committee
The eco committee is made up of pupils from all year groups who play a key role in educating the school and local community on environmental issues as well as identifying and implementing methods to improve the sustainability of the school and have a meaningful impact on the environment. The eco committee is chaired by the environmental leader, who reports to the deputy head: co-curricular, partnerships and admissions.
Amongst other tasks, members of the committee design and implement campaigns, help writing the school’s eco manifesto and action plan. These tasks allow them to expand their understanding of contemporary environmental issues and to develop important, transferable skills including teamworking, communication, planning and evaluation.
Emanuel Nutrition Review Group (ENRG)
The ENRG group meets on a termly basis to discuss food and nutrition-related matters. Items are submitted for discussion following the same process as for the school council (above).
At the meeting of the year group council, each head of year selects pupils to represent their year group at the next ENRG meeting. These meetings are chaired by the deputy head: pupils/designated safeguarding lead, with the catering manager in attendance. Minutes are taken and circulated following the process outlined above for school council.
Pride Committee and Prism
The Pride committee exists to ensure the voice of all LGBTQ+ pupils and staff and those who consider themselves allies are represented within the school. Led by sixth form pupils but overseen by staff, the group organises the annual school Pride Week. The committee also runs the weekly discussion group ‘Prism’, which is meant to provide information, friendship and support in a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ pupils and their friends to discuss queer culture.

Need advice or someone to talk to?
We want your time at Emanuel to be a happy, safe and fulfilling one. Sometimes we could all use some help and support.
We hope that you feel able to share any worries with your teachers and parents. It is important that you feel able to share concerns with us so that we can work together to take helpful action. There are many people you can speak to in school: your form tutor, Head of Year, Head of Section or any member of the school Safeguarding team. You can also speak to the school Chaplain (chaplain@emanuel.org.uk), the school nurses (nurse@emanuel.org.uk) or any teacher. You can talk to them in person, by email or using the ‘Want to talk?’ button on the Firefly dashboard.
If you have a pastoral concern relating to yourself or another pupil at school, you can report it using the ‘Pastoral Concern’ button on the Firefly dashboard. There is an option to raise concerns anonymously should you wish.
You can also refer yourself or ask a teacher to refer you to the School Counsellors: counsellor@emanuel.org.uk

Classroom Guide
Code of Conduct
5 Ps
These are expected of all Emanuel pupils in every lesson.
1. Punctuality: Arrive on time. Plan your break / bag-packing / toilet trips and water collection so that you are in the right classroom, ready to start the next lesson, before the second bell.
2. Preparation: Arrive with the right equipment and any work that needs to be handed in. Know your timetable and when to pack your bag in advance to be able to do this.
3. Politeness: Follow your teacher’s instructions to the letter. Put a hand up to ask a question and wait to be asked to speak. Never call out.
4. Positivity: Work with attention, at a good pace, and consistently apply effort. Participate fully in lessons by volunteering answers to the teacher’s questions as much as possible.
5. Proactivity: Ask questions if you do not understand. Anticipate deadlines for homework by planning your time so that work can be completed well in advance. Where work is not understood, speak to the teacher and arrange a time to look at this. Find out when the relevant help club is and go along to get your questions answered.
Always do what it takes to make sure that you understand everything.
How to improve in any subject
Always do what it takes to make sure that you can achieve the highest mark possible.
1. Pay close attention to the teacher’s feedback by fully correcting work returned and adding in anything that you missed, so you can get full marks on it when you revise.
2. Rewrite a paragraph of marked work or do some more questions to practise the skills needed to improve.
3. Ask your teacher to give you feedback when you have attempted more of the work.
4. Do any extension tasks set. Ask your teacher for additional questions or reading materials.
5. Research the topic further: in your textbook; online; in newspapers; in the library.
If you have unfortunately missed a lesson, by the end of the week, you are expected to have:
• got reliable copies of all the notes and materials used in the lesson missed;
• READ THESE, and done everything you need to do to make sure that you fully understand them;
• (if you haven’t understood) asked the teacher when it would be convenient to go over the work, and/or gone to the appropriate help club.
