THANK YOU DONOR IMPACT REPORT 2023

Donor Impact Report 2023

THANK YOU FROM THE HEADMASTER This report celebrates the impact of philanthropy at Emanuel and highlights some of the key moments of our fundraising campaign, Giant Strides, in the past year. Thank you to you all - our parents, alumni and friends of the school - who have supported us this year. Whether you have given through regular monthly gifts, one-off donations or through legacies, your support makes an incredible difference and impacts the lives of all pupils at Emanuel and our local community both now and in the years to come. Through widening access and developing our site, we not only support our pupils, but have an opportunity to expand our award-winning outreach activities including Primary Ambitions, the GCSE booster programme and Ascent. In 2022/23, we partnered with 32 local schools, had over 1,100 pupils active in Primary Ambitions and 10 schools participated in Ascent. You can read more about these initiatives in our Emanuel in the Community booklet. We are very proud of our school, its rich heritage, sustained academic success and its warm and active community. Thank you for generously giving your time and your donations to support our aims. Robert Milne Headmaster

PHILANTHROPY SUPPORTS CRITICAL BUILD PLAN Sixth Form Centre expansion The hub of Sixth Form life at Emanuel is the Sixth Form Centre. Opened last autumn, the extension provides 50% more space, and comprises a modern café, common room, group and silent study areas. The new space ensures that the expert support we provide sixth formers – from higher education advice to careers guidance and pastoral care - is located in one space and in an environment more aligned with the next stage of their lives.

Emanuel was founded and endowed by Lady Anne Dacre in 1594 and, as we look towards our 430th year, the school continues to benefit from the generosity and foresight of our donors. Your support secures the school for the future and strengthens our commitment to the wider community. Launched in November 2022 with an event in the new Sixth Form Centre extension, Giant Strides will create inspiring spaces for teaching and learning, further our award-winning outreach initiatives and widen access by making more funded places available. As part of the school’s critical build plan, we will enhance facilities for sport, academia and cocurricular activities. This year, we raised £527,132 – making it one of our most successful fundraising years to date. Old Emanuels showed their support in a variety of ways through giving their time, expertise and resources. As part of the campaign launch, we previewed a brilliant Giant Strides film featuring influential OEs including Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Mark Miodownik, Niclas Baker and Ben Moore – highlighting the importance and impact of science, sport, the arts and social mobility. Since the public launch, we have achieved a significant milestone – securing over £2 million towards our £5 million target. Thank you for investing in the people and places that make us a success.

“THE NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE CAME WITH MANY PERKS. THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE FRIENDS BETWEEN YEARS WITHIN THE SIXTH FORM CENTRE CREATED A VIBRANT AND LIVELY SENSE OF COMMUNITY.” 2023 LEAVER

NEW ALL WEATHER PITCH OPENS Phase 1 of our Off Site Sports Ground, Blagdons, is now complete with the new All Weather Pitch and cricket nets in use. The pitch will provide a home venue for girls’ hockey and will allow hockey and rugby matches to be run for girls and boys at the same time and location. The new pitch will also be used for netball and football as well as recreational tennis from next year. We are incredibly grateful to the parents and supporters who have invested in this transformational capital project and the future of sport at Emanuel.

“THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT IS VERY EXCITED TO HAVE A HOME FOR HOCKEY AND MANY OTHER SPORTS AT OUR OFF-SITE SPORTS FACILITY. IT WILL BE FANTASTIC TO SEE BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS REPRESENTING THE SCHOOL AT SPORTS FIXTURES AT OUR HOME SITE. PARENTS ARE VERY WELCOME TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS IN WHAT PROMISES TO BE A BRILLIANT ATMOSPHERE AS WE CONTINUE TO BUILD OUR PERFORMANCE SPORT WITH THE ADDITION OF THE NEW ALL WEATHER PITCH.” KERRY SMITH, DIRECTOR OF SPORT

Sport remains an integral part of day-to-day life at Emanuel. We run over 1,000 inter-school fixtures each year with significantly more teams than many other independent schools in our performance sports. Our sports facilities are very busy throughout the week with training and fixtures, giving significant numbers of pupils the opportunity to represent the school and compete alongside their peers. Further developments at the 14-acre Off Site Sports Ground are now underway.

FUNDED PLACES IN ACTION Regular support enables us to provide more fully funded places, ensuring we can support young people with distinctive promise, regardless of financial means. Our aim, supported by our community initiatives, is to widen access, increase opportunity and foster talent. Twelve pupils received a transformational free place (100% fees) this year. We are extremely thankful for the generosity of our supporters. Funded places remain at the core of Giant Strides as we know an Emanuel School experience truly transforms a recipient’s future, has a significant impact on their wider family and benefits every Emanuel pupil. Pupils on a funded place go on to contribute as prefects, sports captains, actors, debaters, musicians and so much more during their time at school and beyond, inspiring others and strengthening the culture of learning, kindness, high aspiration and inclusivity at the heart of our school.

“I HAVE MADE SO MANY GOOD FRIENDS HERE AND ALL THE TEACHERS ARE REALLY WARM AND HELPFUL. WE HAVE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN ALL OUR SUBJECTS. I AM HAVING EXTRA ENGLISH SESSIONS WITH A TEACHER WHICH IS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL TOO.I FEEL LUCKY TO STUDY HERE.” YEAR 10 PUPIL We were delighted to offer two of our fully funded places to Ukrainian pupils displaced by the conflict. In the next academic year, two families have kindly established a fully funded place to ensure that children have access to an Emanuel School education.

WHAT A FUNDED PLACE MEANT TO ME Zeeshan, 2023 leaver “Emanuel gave me access to many enjoyable extracurricular activities such as academic societies and sport. There were many opportunities to further my knowledge through courses and talks hosted or suggested by Emanuel, which were great for university applications and allowed me to expand my areas of interest. This will all help me to make a good transition to later stages of education. I played rugby throughout my time at Emanuel. I played First team over the course of the Sixth Form and had the opportunity to play my final match at Twickenham Stoop. I was consistently part of the School Council from Y6 to U6, which allowed me to give voice to changes and improvements to the school from my peers and myself. I was a member of the school chess team throughout my time at Emanuel, and in the lower school was a member of the Literary Society. In the Sixth Form, I was part of the Business and Economics Society, in which we maintained a stock profile on Etoro and I also made a presentation on the gig economy. I mentored a Year 7 student for a year to help improve his grades in Maths and English and did Bronze and Silver DofE. Thank you very much for your support, which has allowed me to be a part of this school and given me so many opportunities which I have welcomed and taken advantage of. Emanuel has allowed me to make the most of my education and has also been a wonderful environment to grow through, with supportive teachers and sport which I have thoroughly enjoyed.”

Ariadne, 2023 leaver “Emanuel meant that I was able to mature in a larger environment with more opportunities to discover new passions and explore my love for music. Emanuel allowed me to excel at subjects with excellent support from teachers and to visit places that I never would have been able to go. During Covid, Emanuel enabled me to continue learning by providing a computer, a desk chair and Wi-Fi support. This meant that I was not disadvantaged compared to my peers during my GCSEs. I was in the choir, orchestra and senior string ensemble at Emanuel. I completed grade 4 and 5 singing as well as reaching a grade 8 level in violin and piano with the help of Emanuel funding for my lessons. Moreover, I got a taster in the saxophone which allowed me to round out my musical capabilities. Emanuel has enabled me to have more faith in my future and believe that I can become successful. Most recently, through careers advice, I was encouraged to apply for a law internship with Comcast’s law team, a media company based in Philadelphia. The help I received from the school in not only applying but encouraging me to believe that I could get the place was inspirational. My funded place has meant so much for my family and me in changing my future as well as my enjoyment of school and learning. I am very grateful and hope that more people will be able to experience this at Emanuel.”

LEGACY INITIATIVE LAUNCHED

WHY I HAVE LEFT A LEGACY TO EMANUEL

Emanuel initiated a legacy campaign as part of the launch of Giant Strides to support the school’s current and future needs. A legacy gift is an opportunity for a donor to leave a lasting commitment to the future of the school. Legacy gifts allow us to continue to widen access, develop our site and ensure Emanuel remains a leading coeducational school. Unlike many other independent schools, we do not have a large endowment fund so we value legacy and major gifts to help secure our future and that of future generations.

I joined Emanuel Preparatory School at the age of nine in 1947 and then progressed to the main school two years later. It was then a State aided grammar school. During my education, I joined the CCF and participated in a number of sports teams including cricket, tennis and cross country running. It was a very disciplined and rounded education which enabled me to lead a successful business and social life, including a very happy marriage of 39 years to my late wife, Anneliese, who passed on in 2006.

Emanuel School and the national Assisted Places Scheme gave many of our alumni a start in life that has secured their futures; our free place initiative aims to sustain our school’s ability to do this for young people in the years to come.

“THOSE OF US WHO WERE PRIVILEGED TO RECEIVE A FREE EDUCATION AT THIS GREAT SCHOOL OWE A HUGE DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO OUR BENEFACTORS. AS THE SON OF POORLY EDUCATED PARENTS FROM A VERY HUMBLE BACKGROUND MY SCHOLARSHIP TO EMANUEL WAS A LIFELINE TO THE FUTURE, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OBLIVION AND SALVATION” DEREK SAUNDERS (OE1948-56)

As such, I feel most grateful to Emanuel for giving me a sound basis for a happy and successful life and have shown my gratitude by including the school in my will. John Sullivan (OE1947-57)

FAMILY HONOURS LIFE BY DONATING TO THE BOAT CLUB

Donor Impact Report 2023

“I AM VERY GRATEFUL TO EMANUEL SCHOOL BOAT CLUB FOR HELPING MY FAMILY HONOUR MY FATHER IN THIS WAY AND I WISH THE BOAT AND ALL WHO RIDE IN HER SAFETY, HAPPINESS AND, OF COURSE, SPEED! ALAN DANGOUR, EMANUEL SCHOOL DONOR

The Dangour family made a significant donation to the Boat Club to part fund the purchase of a new boys’ coxed four in memory of Aboodi Dangour, grandfather to our former Captain of Boats and his brother, both Emanuel pupils.

“THE GENEROUS DONATION FROM THE DANGOUR FAMILY MEANT THAT WE COULD FAST TRACK OUR PLANS TO UPGRADE OUR FLEET AND PURCHASE A BOYS’ COXED FOUR ROWING BOAT. THE NEW BOAT SAW US SUCCESSFULLY COMPETING AT THE TOP LEVEL WITH FOUR GIRLS AND A BOY MAKING A FINALS IN A CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT AT NATIONAL SCHOOLS, A FEAT NOT SEEN FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS.” TIM LIVERSAGE, DIRECTOR OF ROWING The Boat Club had an incredible season with top 5 finishes at the Schools’ Head for boys and girls, qualification for Henley Royal Regatta for the first time in 10 years and the boys’ pair winning the prestigious Bevan Cup at the National Schools Regatta. Two boys have been selected to row for England and will compete in Ireland this year. Last autumn, 76 rowers including 8 recent leavers completed an epic 54km row from Windsor to Emanuel in support of transformative free places at Emanuel and smashed their target, raising an impressive £14,000. Thank you to our dedicated rowers and their families and friends who sponsored them.

WATES FAMILY CONTINUES ITS 100-YEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH EMANUEL The school’s connection to the Wates family dates back over a century with Allan, Norman and Ronald Wates attending the school between 1917 and 1927. The family has carried on its connection through the funding of the Boathouse, Year 7 block and transformative free places as well as serving on Emanuel School’s Governing Board. The Wates family has generously committed a significant sum to the Giant Strides campaign to support capital development at our Off Site Sports Ground. The largest donor to our sports facility, their investment allows us to further opportunities for Emanuel pupils and the wider community. Thank you to the Wates family for your continued investment.

EMANUEL SCHOOL FAMILIES DONATE THEIR SCHOLARSHIP IN SUPPORT OF FREE PLACES ‘DONATE YOUR DEPOSIT’ SECURES OVER £70,000 Thank you to the parents of 2023 leavers for your generous support of Giant Strides. Over £70,000 in deposit donations were gifted to the school to support capital developments as well as provide more funded places to talented children across our community. We are proud to now welcome the Class of 2023 as Old Emanuels and look forward to seeing where life takes every member of the cohort.

Each year, Emanuel offers scholarships to exceptionally talented pupils across Music, Drama, Sport and academia. Scholarships are highly competitive and may provide our pupils with more prestige than financial support – though scholarships can be topped up with means tested funding. A very engaged Emanuel School family encouraged others to join them by donating back their scholarship to support other young people in financial need. Through this, 9 families donated more than £23,000 in scholarship funding to support our free places programme. We are incredibly grateful to all of those who chose to donate their scholarship.

“THE IMPACT OF COLLECTIVE GIVING CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE; THE SUPPORT OF JUST 10 FAMILIES RECEIVING A SCHOLARSHIP CAN PROVIDE A FULLY FUNDED PLACE FOR ONE CHILD WHO WOULD NOT OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO ATTEND EMANUEL.” CURRENT PARENT AND DONOR

Donor Impact Report 2023

EMANUEL AND THE COMMUNITY REGULAR GIVING Thank you to nearly 100 donors who choose to support us through regular monthly or annual donations. Regular giving allows us to plan for the future and empowers donors to join together to strengthen the Emanuel community with widespread participation. Thank you to our regular donors for your ongoing support. Every gift, of whatever size, helps us towards achieving our Giant Strides goals.

OEA PROVIDES MEANINGFUL SUPPORT TO EMANUEL’S COMMUNITY PROGRAMMES “The OEA is proud and happy to support the awardwinning Primary Ambitions programme and view it as an initiative that is both innovative and rewarding for the primary school children of Wandsworth. Many OEA members have strong connections with the partner schools and feel that Wandsworth is a critical part of their heritage. In addition, Primary Ambitions is an excellent confidence builder for students in the Lower Sixth, one of their most important years in their development.” OEA Executive Committee

We were thrilled that the Old Emanuel Association (OEA) chose, once again, to support Primary Ambitions this year with a £2,000 grant to help address our primary school partners’ travel costs. Many of our 16 partner primary schools come to us on Friday afternoon under their own steam but others cannot participate in the weekly Primary Ambitions programme without help with transport. These partner schools have insufficient staff to bring their children safely to Emanuel School on public transport or on foot. By providing them with access to a minibus, we enable our partner pupils and our Lower Sixth to fully benefit from the programme.

Emanuel is very much part of its local community. We have a diverse and ever-developing partnership and outreach programme which includes the award-winning Primary Ambitions programme. Our aim is to foster aspiration and social mobility through education. Please read our Emanuel in the Community publication for more information and to see the impact of our programmes.

The cohort achieved 93% A*/B grades in all forms of assessment. the highest ever proportion. Last year, we were delighted to report an outstanding year for Oxbridge offers, with just under 60% of our applicants achieving places and two pupils taking up a place at the University of Oxford to study Chemistry. A third of 2022 leavers are studying STEM subjects at university (up from a quarter last year) and 75% of places are at Russell Group universities.

GCSE RESULTS Our 2022 GCSE results were exceptional with 41% of grades at level 9, our highest outcome in any examination year. With the national picture showing a return to 2019 grading, Emanuel pupils achieved 68% 9-8 grades, an increase of more than 50% on our highest pre-pandemic results.
