18 Emanuel School

The Archer Advisory Group, named after John Richard Archer, first black mayor of London and lifelong Battersea resident, is an important voice within Emanuel School, made up of staff – from across all employee positions and pupils of different ages and backgrounds.

Eco Committee

Archer Advisory Group

Autumn Term 2022 19

is committed to instilling a sense of collective responsibility and ambition in our pupils, staff and wider community to achieve an environmentally sustainable future.

These working groups (Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form) will audit changes that have already been made within the school, as well as devising and advising on new approaches. It will have a specific focus on the way the school creates an environment where all pupils feel safe, secure and able to speak about their concerns, in particular regarding treatment of girls and women within our comunity, fostering a spirit of mutual respect and gender equality.

Pupils meet once a week to think together with Miss Childerstone about global and local environmental issues. The group has been very active in making changes to encourage more sustainable practices in the school through ‘Wasteless Week’, the Emanuel Environmental Conference and taking the necessary steps in pursuit of the Eco Schools Award. It has also created the following environmental manifesto that all members of the school community are encouraged to Emanuelfollow...School

Prism and the Pride Committee

Meeting twice termly, its task is to review the school’s curriculum, structures and population, through the lenses of the diverse members of the Emanuel community. It has a specific focus on the ways in which we provide education and act regarding race, anti-racism and forms of inequality and representation in society. In addition, the group reviews the school’s approaches to pastoral care and behaviour, the policies underpinning the care of our pupils, recruitment practices throughout the school and accessibility to the school for all young people (and their families) at every entry point.

Section groups on gender equality and mutual respect

We believe it is our duty to raise awareness of the challenges that our environment faces and are determined to take positive action to address these so that sustainability and environmental considerations are embedded into our everyday school culture.

Prism provides a space for constructive conversations around matters relating to equality, inclusions, diversity, and sexuality. Run by Father Labran and Miss Holden all pupils from Year 8 and above are welcome to attend once a fortnight. The group also plays a significant role in supporting the work of the Pride Committee that organises Pride Week in the spring term every year.

By demonstrating best practice that engages all stakeholders and incorporates all our activities we can be proactive in minimising the ecological impact of our school operations and ensure that understanding and the practice of sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do at Emanuel.

Autumn Term 2022 61

Always do what it takes to make sure that you can achieve the highest mark possible.

1. Pay close attention to the teacher’s feedback by fully correcting work returned and adding in anything that you missed, so you can get full marks on it when you revise.

3. Ask your teacher to give you feedback when you have attempted more of the work.

How to improve in any subject

5. Research the topic further: in your textbook; online; in newspapers; in the library. If you have unfortunately missed a lesson, by the end of the week, you are expected to have:

2. Rewrite a paragraph of marked work or do some more questions to practise the skills needed to improve.

• got reliable copies of all the missing notes and materials used in the lesson missed; • READ THESE, and done everything you need to do to make sure that you fully understand them; • (if you haven’t understood) asked the teacher when it would be convenient to go over the work, and/or gone to the appropriate help club.

62 Emanuel School

4. Do any extension tasks set. Ask your teacher for additional questions or reading materials.

Always do what it takes to make sure that you understand everything.

2. Preparation: Arrive with the right equipment and any work that needs to be handed in. Know your timetable and when to pack your bag in advance to be able to do this.

5. Proactivity: Ask questions if you do not understand. Anticipate deadlines for homework by planning your time so that work can be completed well in advance. Where work is not understood, speak to the teacher and arrange a time to look at this. Find out when the relevant help club is and go along to get your questions answered.

Autumn Term 2022 63 Code of Conduct 5 Ps

These are expected of all Emanuel pupils in every lesson.

1. Punctuality: Arrive on time. Plan your break/bag-packing/toilet trips and water collection so that you are in the right classroom, ready to start the next lesson, before the second bell.

4. Positivity: Work with attention, at a good pace, and consistently apply effort. Participate fully in lessons by volunteering answers to the teacher’s questions as much as possible.

3. Politeness: Follow your teacher’s instructions to the letter. Put a hand up to ask a question and wait to be asked to speak. Never call out.
