5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HOME COOL THIS SUMMER

Your windows can be an inlet for hot air. Keep the curtains and blinds shut and check all seals periodically.

Keep all doors closed as far as possible. By reducing the volume of air your AC needs to cool, it saves energy by working more efďŹ ciently.

Activities like ironing, washing and cooking can generate heat. Do them at a cooler time of the day.

Turn on the exhaust fan after your shower. This helps get rid of rising hot air quickly.

Use cotton for clothing, bedsheets and pillow covers, instead of heavier fabric such as silk or polyester.

THE HOME AID BOX Q. I’m getting a musty odour in my home. How do I get rid of it? A musty smell is generally associated with the presence of mold, when humidity is higher. 1. Inspect all pipes for leaks. If you find damp spots around the house, call a reliable plumber to take a look. 2. If you’ve been away, the drain pipes may have dried up allowing sewage gases to seep into your home. Pour water down all drains if the odour seems to be coming from them. 3. Setting your air-conditioning too low in the summer can cause excessive condensation in the inner walls, leading to mold growth in and around the duct chambers. If the odour is coming from the AC vents, call a reliable service provider to inspect the vents. 4. Indoor plants can release odour as they rot if they have been overwatered or not been tended to. Prune any rotting parts of your indoor plants.

Paranormal Activity

Our teacher told us about phantom power today, dad! Did you know most electrical appliances use power even when turned off?

Is that so? That’s interesting, son!

So what do you plan to do about it, Adam?

DAD, I already went around the house and unplugged anything that wasn’t in use!

Good job, son! You wouldn’t happen to have unplugged our new TV too?

Yes, so I guess I won’t be returning the TV after all.

Of course, dad! I thought of everything.
