Downtown Dubai Badminton League In an exciting adrenaline-fueled event, the residents of Downtown Dubai smashed it up at the Downtown Dubai Badminton League. From a total of 40 participants, Myron Verano and Martin Castrodes were declared the winner and runner-up, respectively in the male category.

April Castrodes romped to victory in the female category, while Frances Powell swooped the runner-up trophy. Browse on for exclusive highlights.

PEST PROOFING THIS WINTER Invasive pests want to be indoors during the winter for the same reasons you do! So, don’t neglect pest control in the coming cooler months.

Prevention is vital • Don’t leave food and water exposed overnight – indoors or outdoors.

• Make sure your home, including the balcony, is always clean.

• If you have a balcony garden, remove the ripened fruits as they can attract fruit flies.

• Avoid leaving feed for birds in the balcony.

• Dispose waste properly into the trash chute. Do not leave garbage bags lying around in the garbage room.

• Get rid of newspapers, cardboard boxes and magazines.

Unwanted clothes cluttering up your home?

Modified your home, have to deal with construction waste?

Don’t let them go to waste.

Simply deposit them in the Beit Al Khair donation box located in your towers’ parking levels. But please make sure the clothes are in good condition and clean.

As per Dubai Municipality (DM) regulations, disposing construction waste is the responsibility of your contractors. This waste should not be disposed in communal waste and only in DM approved sites.

Downtown Dubai Billiards Tournament The billiards tourney was back this year drawing residents of all age groups for an exciting event at Old Town Island. George Tarazi from Yansoon took the winning shot to sweep away the championship trophy, while Andy Sachdev from The Residences closed in as the runner-up.

Being fire-ready Fire drills are conducted to educate and prepare residents to respond quickly and calmly in the event of a fire. Drills also provide the perfect platform to test the safety systems in place.

In the event of a fire, remember: • Close all doors and windows before evacuation.

• Learn how to use the fire extinguisher only from a qualified source.

• If your clothing catches fire, stop, drop and roll.

• When the fire alarm is raised, proceed to the fire exit on your floor.

• Report at the assembly point.

• Listen to and follow instructions from the Community Security.

My training helped me save someone, for which I am very grateful.

Service providers are the pillars of a thriving community. With a harmonized team working round-the-clock - from cleaners, gardeners, security to electricians, plumbers, pest control staff - like cogs in a well-oiled machine to serve a common goal – resident satisfaction. But every once in a while, a team member elevates his esteem in the community.

Hailing from Pakistan, Muhammed Asif came to Dubai with hopes of providing a better life for his family back home. A trained electrician, the 24-year old is extremely passionate about his job. “I love my job and the best thing is the teamwork and cooperation with our peers,” he says. Little did he know his knowledge would be soon put to the test.

On the evening of 04 October, Muhammed was in the Building Management Systems (BMS) control room when he noticed the emergency sign was glaring and a person was stuck in the elevator. Having attended the Elevator Emergency Precaution Rescue Training, he was able to keep his cool and let his training take over. Muhammed rescued the person by using the key and manually opening the elevator. The resident was a little shaken but perfectly fine and extremely grateful. His manager was also extremely happy at the quick action taken, and Muhammed says, “I felt great confidence in myself and my training helped me save someone, for which I am very grateful.”

Parking bay protocol Have you ever refused to drive just to avoid parking woes? Let’s be honest, one of the most stressful and annoying aspects of owning a car is finding a parking. However, having a designated parking bay is an immense advantage, but it comes with these caveats: Parking bays are for cars only. Using it for storage is strictly against the community rules, because: • Think of how it looks to outsiders – junk stored and spilling out of your parking bay presents a dim view of the community. This in-turn puts-off prospective investors, drastically reducing the property value.

• Storing various items such as petrol, oil, lighter fluid, garden products, and paints are few of the hazardous solvents together where the heat from vehicles pose a serious threat.

• Storage of chemical compounds and cars emitting carbon monoxide is a dangerous combination.

• Fluctuating temperatures and humidity are not ideal conditions for storing items. You’re in danger of attracting mold and pests that flourish in such environments.

We are in the festive mood! But it isn’t complete without great food. Maionchi from Boulevard Central delights you with her tried-and-true recipe for an easy and delicious ‘Peppermint Crisp Refrigerator Tart’.

You’ll need: • 380 gm caramel • 500 ml cream • 70 gm peppermint crisp chocolate (you'll find this in the international section or a South African shop) • 1 packet of thin coconut biscuits (tennis biscuits are best; find in the international section or a South African shop) Method: • Whip cream till thick. Add caramel and mix well till combined. Crush two-thirds of the peppermint crisp and add to the cream-caramel mixture. Set one-third aside.

• In a suitable dish (preferably square or rectangular), place a layer of biscuits. Don't worry if there are small spaces in between. Spoon a little bit of the caramel mixture over the biscuits to cover completely.

• Repeat with layering biscuits, cream-caramel, and grated chocolate until finished, ending with a caramel layer and sprinkle the remaining crushed chocolate on the top.

• Place in the refrigerator to set overnight. Serve chilled and dig in!
