A flowery drive through the community Prepare to be greeted by the vibrant sight of blossoming flowers as you drive through your community – we’ve upgraded the landscaping with the introduction of Purple Sage, Desert Rose, Bougainvillea and Purslane.

Fun Fact: The Bougainvillea’s purple doesn’t come from its flowers, which are like tiny white pinheads. It’s the bracts – specialised leaves surrounding the flower – that are purple. Look closely the next time you’re strolling through The Meadows!

MEET YOUR GREEN-FINGERED IRRIGATION TECHNICIAN

Up close & personal with Raj If you spot someone closely observing the irrigation lines, it’s probably Raj – the man who keeps all the plants well-watered.

We decided to catch up with Raj Mohan from India, who’s been working in the community for nearly eleven years.

Why he loves it here: “It’s definitely the green-est place I’ve seen in Dubai. After stepping into Emirates Living, I can’t believe I’m in a desert. The residents are also so warm and always smile at everyone, including me.”

What a typical day is like: “Mornings are for a bit of listening to music and sharing a few laughs with friends back home on WhatsApp groups. After work, it’s more or less the same – I may go out for a stroll if I’m in the mood.”

On his family back home: “I miss my family a lot – I do speak with them often, especially on weekends. But being there with them is special, and I always look forward to the holidays!”

His ambitions: “I can honestly say my greatest dream is to bring my family here some day and show them around this beautiful community. I want to see their stunned reactions when they see how great the place looks!”

How friends describe him: “Raj is a helpful, honest guy who loves to learn new things. He’s been here for eleven years now but he’s still always looking to take his expertise further!”

Pet saliva and waste contain germs, and their fur can trigger allergies among a few.

Some residents may feel afraid when animals are around.

All community streets are pet-friendly – they’re perfect for walks with your furry friend.

Rule #2 - Always keep dogs on a leash.

Take necessary precautions.

What can I do?

Animals may get frightened by abrupt sounds like loud vehicles, making them behave unpredictably.

Incorporate basic training like ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ in your dog’s exercise routine and walks.

This will make your pet more obedient.

Rule #3 - Clean up after your dog.

If they poop, you must scoop.

Why is it important?

What can I do?

Pet waste harbours disease and parasites that other dogs roll around in, sniff, and accidentally eat. Avoid the spread of sickness.

Dog bins are located throughout the community to make clean up easy.

Rule #4 - Don’t let it get too noisy.

Be a good neighbour.

What can I do?

Your community is home to families with small children, elderly folks and others who can be inconvenienced by too much barking. Lay down some home rules for your pet.

Try to find out what’s upsetting your pet.

Don’t leave dogs alone for long – it makes them sad!

Get rid of any hitchhikers Pests can latch onto travelling cases and follow you right back home. It’s not just the bags though – clothing can also hold insects, eggs and larvae.

Solution Toss all clothes into the dryer – the heat will kill all critters. Give your luggage a thorough cleaning, and don’t forget the shoes!

Look for signs of activity Dark spots resembling ground pepper mean there’s a good chance cockroaches are running wild in your home. If you spot even one cockroach, you probably have an infestation.

Solution Scatter crushed bay leaves and garlic powder around your cupboards. A mixture of baking soda and sugar also gets rid of them.

Watch out for water Check the water in your toilet, any water features and other stagnant sources – mosquitoes lay their eggs in them, and one stray mosquito is all it takes.

Solution If you notice any wriggling larvae that resemble little black threads, just add a few drops of dish soap to the water.

Listen to your pets Rodents can be detected by most dogs and cats. If your pet is paying extra attention to certain parts of the house, darting around at night or whining near a particular wall, look for grain-sized droppings or gnawed floorboards to confirm a rodent infestation.

JUST DIY IT POCKET-FRIENDLY REFRIGERATION Stop paying for your refrigerator’s sins – here’s how you can save money by optimising its energy consumption:

Keep your fridge vents clean with a solution of vinegar and water. Clogged vents will cause the fridge to draw more power.

Inspect your gaskets and door seals periodically to look for air gaps from which air could be seeping in or out of the fridge.

Pack your freezer tightly – solids don’t gain or lose heat as easily as air, so the average temperature in your freezer won’t rise too quickly when you open it.

Wipe liquid spills immediately, don’t wait for the chores day!

THE HOME AID BOX Q. One of the windows in my home is stuck – how do I open it without damaging it?

Use a plastic knife or a putty knife to gently score the line between your window and the frame, slowly applying pressure to prise the window open.

Once the window is open, apply a thin layer of paraffin wax – if you don’t have wax, rub soap around the edges.

Why are you storing that water, mom?

Well Adam, boiling vegetables releaSE water-soluble nutrients like vitamin C into water. They’re great for plants!

I’ve also collected some eggshells and teabags FOR the soil TOO. crushed eggshells HAVE calcium while teabags provide the soil with nitrogen.

Don’t throw those coffee grounds!

It’s a pity dad only drinks coffee, isn’t it?

Coffee works too!

Coffee grounds release nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus into the soil.
