THE IDES OF MARCH FOR FLUTE, ALTO SAXOPHONE, MEZZOMEZZO-SOPRANO, PERCUSSION, AND PIANO

Performance Notes General

Percussion

Accidentals carry through the measure and are canceled at the bar line.

In m. 3 there is no need to rush between the bowed note in event 3b and the malleted part in event 3c; and, similarly between the malleted part ending in event 3e and the bongos in event 3f.

All trills are a half step.

There is no rush during the aleatoric sections. Timings are a suggestion for the least amount of time to be spent on each event. Let each figure develop before moving on to the next.

Flute In m. 3d, begin playing notes in order softly and low in the register. As the arrow continues, get faster and move to higher notes.

Begin key clicks slowly and increase in speed throughout m. 4.

Grace notes in mm. 17, 26, and 37-38 should be played as quickly and as close to the downbeat as possible.

For mm. 30-32, the out of tune effect is more important than the quarter tone accuracy.

Similar to mm. 30-32, emphasis should be placed on oscillating in and out of tune, quickly at first and slowing down over the course of all four events in m. 45.

In m. 3c, begin the pattern slowly, increasing with speed until the switch to bongos. Measure 3f is improvised; playing should always be getting louder, faster, and more intense.

Turn the snares off for all snare drum parts. Slashed notes indicate a rim shot. X’d notes are cymbal hits.

The same sticks may be used in m. 29 when switching from snare drum to bongos.

In measure 44d-g the bowed notes should not necessarily line up with the piano notes. Play notes shorter, faster, and closer together at the beginning and then slow down as the arrow continues. Avoid long rests between notes, but lengthen the notes themselves.

Voice Descend slightly in pitch in m.4 as close to the end of the measure as possible.

The rest in measure 6 is an optional breath to be taken only if necessary.

Take as much time as possible during the slide in m. 41.

The figure in measure 44e may be repeated.

Piano Begin the pattern in m. 3 slowly and gently accelerate through the figure. As the arrow enters, the notes should be performed by each hand at random; the pattern should start to become unrecognizable. Continue to accelerando to a moderate allegro.

In m. 4, notes should be played in a pointalistic style, randomly, and very quickly.

8va markings in mm. 28, 31, 33-35, 37, and 38 beats 1-3 and 5-6 are for the right hand only. Beat 4 in m. 38 and m.

44, both hands should be played up an octave.

The feathered notes in m. 6 do not need to line up with the feathered notes in the vocal line; just increase in tempo and volume.

The C before each multi-phonic is optional; play the C if it helps the multi-phonic sound quickly.

In measure 43f, the feathered notes do not need to line up with the feathered notes in the piano.

Play the notes in the cluster in m. 43a similarly to the end of measure 3, quickly, randomly, and without a pattern.

Slow down as each other instrument enters and the piece comes to a close.

In measure 43f, the feathered notes do not need to line up with the feathered notes in the saxophone.
