El Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno participa en la XIII edición del Festival Internacional de Artes y Culturas Digitales de Gran Canaria, Canariasmediafest, con la muestra Present Tense; proyecto centrado en el uso de la crónica mediática del mundo actual desde la creación visual para denunciar la aparente estabilidad en que vivimos.

La propuesta nos sitúa ante una nueva versión de la crítica ideológica ejercida desde la videocreación, que ha asumido el reto de representar el espectáculo de la actualidad en una era globalizada, dedicando una mirada irónica al desmoronamiento de la fantasía de un mundo estable que se había consolidadado en Europa y Estados Unidos tras la Guerra Fría y la caída del Muro, una especulación cercenada con los atentados del 11 de Septiembre de 2001. Cuestionada la confianza en la seguridad y la economía, la incertidumbre y el miedo han pasado a ser el elemento que cohesiona las sociedades occidentales en un escenario marcado por nuevas tensiones geopolíticas que generan una circulación masiva de personas y nuevas formas de exclusión.

Berta Sichel, responsable del Departamento de Audiovisuales del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía y comisaria de esta exposición, nos aproxima al procedimiento artístico de la apropiación de imágenes de los medios de comunicación a través de la videocreación para expresar la inquietud ante la realidad, para representar y denunciar el Tiempo Presente en un intento de recontextualizar la lógica de esta nueva era donde las relaciones de predominio y subordinación también se definen y se rechazan desde la creación visual.

Abiertas ya las puertas a la reflexión sobre la inmigración clandestina vista por los artistas africanos en la exposición Travesía, el CAAM, a través de la convivencia de ambas muestras, nos invita en su programación de otoño de 2008 a reflexionar sobre el estatuto contemporáneo de la obra de arte, sobre la hibridación de lenguajes y argumentos, sobre la concurrencia entre compromiso y acción.

The Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno is taking part in the 13th International Gran Canaria Festival of Digital Arts and Culture, Canariasmediafest, with the exhibition Present Tense, which focuses on the use of the media report on today’s world from the perspective of visual creation to denounce the apparent stability in which we live.

The proposal places us before a new version of the ideological criticism levelled by video art, which has taken on the challenge of representing the spectacle of current events in a globalised epoch, casting an ironic glance at the collapse of fantasy in a stable world consolidated in Europe and the United States after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, a conjecture curtailed by the September 11 attacks in 2001. With security and the economy called into question, uncertainty and fear have become the glue binding Western societies in a scenario marked by new geopolitical tensions that fuel the massive circulation of people and new forms of social exclusion.

Berta Sichel, head of the audiovisual department at Madrid’s Reina Sofía Museum and Arts Centre, and curator of this exhibition, leads us to the artistic procedure of appropriating images from the media for video art expressing disquiet in the face of reality, to represent and denounce the Present Tense in a bid to recontextualise the logic of the new era in which relations of domination and subordination are also defined and rejected by visual art.

Having opened the gates to reflection on clandestine immigration as viewed by African artists in the exhibition Travesía [“Crossing”], the CAAM, via the two shows, invites us with this year’s autumn programme to consider the current state of contemporary art, the hybridisation of idioms and discourses, and the concurrence of commitment and actions.

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) Todos nos sentimos hoy protegidos dentro de la burbuja artificial del presente. No importa que el mundo exterior esté en llamas o anegado por las aguas, se trata de un mundo remoto, aunque la CNN cubra esas catástrofes bajo el título Our World Today (Nuestro mundo hoy). Eso de que los noticiarios televisivos difunden la verdad en tiempo real no es más que una ficción. A pesar de su apariencia high-tech y high-speed, no son más que una construcción de imagen realizada mediante un proceso de montaje, un método que la fotografía y el cine llevan ochenta años utilizando. Lo que ese montaje artificial y la ausencia de significado1 que la televisión aporta no es sino una seudohistoria del presente que llega ya empaquetada a nuestro cuarto de estar. Con una imagen y resolución sonora nítida y perfecta, seduce a los televidentes hasta el punto de hacernos olvidar la deformación de esa ventana asomada diariamente al mundo. En un mundo en el que redes y enlaces son vocablos clave, nuestra interfaz con la televisión es fundamental.2 Con todo, las noticias, tal como nos llegan, se compilan y editan con unos estándares que se acercan más a la publicidad que a la cobertura tradicional de noticias. Y en las noticias televisivas, toda noticia es efímera y desaparece como llevada por el viento.

Dentro de la seguridad de nuestra burbuja artificial, la historia no sólo pertenece a un pasado remoto, sino que se convierte, ante todo, en fuente de entretenimiento. El History Channel es la respuesta televisiva a la popularidad de la ficción y el cine histórico, las historias de guerra o las biografías de grandes personajes. El espacio lineal de la historia desarrollado por Euclides y sancionado por la Ilustración no ha podido sobrevivir a la velocidad, a la simultaneidad ni a la interconectividad de Internet. La existencia contemporánea no nos concede el tiempo necesario para examinar Present Tense

con detenimiento el mundo o para comprender las conexiones sutiles que existen entre la aparente estabilidad de nuestra rutina cotidiana y los complejos subtextos que mantienen el estado moderno a flote. Todo intento por hallar las líneas de fondo, los comienzos y/o la narración lineal queda, así, incumplido.

La tecnología, ligada como está tanto a la percepción como a la conciencia, es un poderoso agente. Y eso es cierto tanto para la vieja tecnología como para la de nuevo cuño, resultando totalmente falsa la creencia de que sólo la nueva tecnología ha modificado la realidad; la imprenta trastornó por entero la sociedad medieval alterando drásticamente su organización. Y aun así, resulta imposible comparar la sociedad de hoy con la de hace seiscientos años.3 Para muchos estudiosos, todos los aspectos que conciernen a la actual era geopolítica parten del 11 de Septiembre de 2001. El espantoso espectáculo de aquel día produjo una imagen que vale, no más de mil palabras, sino un millón; una catastrófica visión que se propagó por el globo en cuestión de segundos y que, inmediatamente, se transformó en el icono de nuestro tiempo presente. Para muchos, ese único episodio del 11 de Septiembre es responsable de la desestabilización de estados y sociedades que hasta entonces habían vivido la euforia de seudopoder. Y, sin embargo, muchos otros atribuyen nuestra situación presente a acontecimientos que se extienden a lo largo de las últimas cinco décadas y que habrían configurado, todos ellos, las fantasías de nuestra actual existencia cosmopolita e (in)estable. Como escribió Henri Lefebvre inmediatamente después de los sucesos de Mayo de 1968, esas desviaciones que nos rodean son un microcosmos de las condiciones generales de opresión, el espíritu de un mundo sin espíritu.4 Durante los últimos veinte años, ese mundo sin espíritu ha incrementado su control burocrático sobre una sociedad obsesionada por el consumo. La nunca antes vista velocidad de transmisión de la imagen ha transformado la imaginación de la

vivencia social cosmopolita. Y, con todo, el daño provocado por esa distorsión mediática no ha logrado impedir la supervivencia de espacios y situaciones que permiten eludir esos ghettos mentales y que ofrecen condiciones en las que resulta posible compartir otras historias.

Leyendo el arte hoy: Los medios de comunicación no son la única e inevitable ruta; existen otras maneras de narrar y desvelar los acontecimientos. Y la creación artística sigue siendo un medio poderoso, a pesar de la situación de comercialidad del actual mercado global del arte. En una reciente conferencia, el filósofo italiano Antonio Neri describe el actual mundo del arte equiparándolo al sistema bancario. Neri ve a los bancos y a las instituciones financieras como el mecenas contemporáneo. Dentro del contexto estudiado por Neri, la proliferación de bienales, de ferias de arte, de itinerancias artísticas y de exposiciones de éxito arrollador constituye una paradoja crucial: a pesar del éxito de público, esos espectáculos son vistos con indiferencia. Y con todo, continúan siendo el principal escenario en el que ejercitar nuestra visión contemporánea. Esa visión que se ha convertido prácticamente en un acto de voyeurismo ya que, según recientes estudios sobre audiencias de museo, la gente invierte una media de quince segundos delante de una obra de arte.

En tanto que análisis crítico del presente, Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) explora diversas posibilidades a través de las imágenes de obras de soporte electrónico, quizás el más apropriado para la representación artística de la vida contemporánea. Las obras expuestas ofrecen expresivas imágenes del mundo de hoy en las que priman lo visual sobre el texto y el diálogo. Al insistir en la autonomía relativa de la cultura e indagar en intersticios específicos del arte dentro de estructuras políticas y económicas, el marco de esta exposición implica un cambio de énfasis desde la cultura en sí misma al terreno de las políticas culturales, un lugar en el que es necesario negociar los significados y en donde las relaciones de dominación y subordinación se definen y refutan. Como afirma Stuart Hall, las Present Tense

prácticas culturales se convierten, por tanto, en un ámbito en el que nos implicamos y en el que elaboramos política.5 Política que, en este contexto, nada tiene que ver con la de los partidos, sino con cómo pueden las personas expresar la identidad y los artistas definir su propio lugar dentro del mundo. En un periodo en el que los movimientos de personas, ideas y tecnología son sometidos a un examen más amplio e intenso, parecería de especial importancia reflexionar sobre las posibilidades y desafíos que plantea la comprensión de la fragilidad del poder del mundo industrializado, y su aparente libertad y abundancia. Rápida e implacablemente, el nuevo sistema local/global ha acelerado el proceso de circulación e intercambio cultural. Y aunque se trata de unos rasgos que han existido durante siglos, como afirma la teórica y escritora Irit Rogoff en su libro Terra Infirma: Geography’s Visual Culture: simplemente, carecíamos tanto de los recursos como de la conciencia necesaria para describir ese proceso.

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) plantea también un desafío al acto de mirar y ofrece una experiencia de alcance que transforma el instante de ver. Las cinco obras de base medial encajan y resuenan en el diminuto espacio de la antigua capilla del monasterio de San Antonio Abad, un lugar en el que se dice que Colón oró antes de zarpar en uno de sus viajes a las Indias. La iglesia, situada en una pequeña plaza y restaurada en 1999, se ha convertido en un espacio de exposición satélite del Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno.

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) intenta desestabilizar conceptos que habían sido, hasta ahora, asumidos, al desafiar el modo de producción de las imágenes definido por las noticias de los mass media. Al hacerlo, proporciona otras formas de ver y comprender acontecimientos cruciales del presente. La exposición mira al presente a través de las obras de dos generaciones de artistas de cinco países: Stéphanie N’Duhirahe, Omer Fast, Antoni Muntadas, Marcel Odenbach y Martha Rosler. El catálogo se planeó como parte fundamental de la exposición, se invitaron a cinco críticos de arte a escribir textos nuevos sobre cada una de las obras seleccionadas con

el propósito de generar una multiplicidad de visiones que ayude a comprender y situar unas obras tan expresivas como provocadoras.

A ellos dejaré, por tanto, la tarea de analizar las obras, limitándome en estas líneas a reseñarlas brevemente.

El hilo conductor que atraviesa el discurso visual de las obras expuestas es de una cierta tensión, pero permite al mismo tiempo constatar que eluden el énfasis en el estilo y en la manipulación de la imagen que convierte tantas obras de base videográfica en problemáticas. Todo lo contrario, sus narrativas son visualmente convincentes al intentar explorar los significados más profundos que se ocultan tras las imágenes, incluso en aquellos casos en los que han sido extraídas de los medios de comunicación, como en el caso de CNN Concatenated de Omer Fast, un extensísimo monólogo editado en su totalidad a partir de material grabado de Cable News Network en el periodo 2001-2002. La obra de Fast es la primera con la que el público se encuentra al entrar en la exposición. Exhibida en un monitor de televisión, como los situados en las zonas de espera de un aeropuerto, se cierne sobre nuestras cabezas como una sombra esquizofrénica que nos habla de la im/posibilidad de entender los acontecimientos noticiables.6 Las historias que cuentan –algunas sin diálogo, como la videoperformance Sans titre (2006) de Stéphanie N’Duhirahe o Stuttgart (2006) de Muntadas– exigen una nueva lectura de las imágenes. N’Duhirahe mantiene el equilibrio mientras sus pies descalzos cruzan de puntillas por un gran espacio de cemento con objetos cotidianos –platos, tazas, un cenicero– esparcidos por el suelo, arreglándoselas, sin embargo, para mantenerse en pie.

Siempre a punto de caer, manteniendo el equilibrio, es una metáfora de la fragilidad de la existencia, parcialmente provocada por la excesiva producción de objetos desechables. Por su parte, Muntadas proporciona una visión crítica de la globalización del poder empresarial: la hipnótica imagen de la estrella gigante de MercedesBenz rotando silenciosamente sobre el edificio del cuartel general de la empresa que domina la ciudad de Stuttgart.

En conexión con la crítica que Fast efectúa sobre el terrorismo, Rosler investiga la forma en la que las realidades sociales y las ideologías políticas dominan la vida cotidiana. Prototype (God Bless America) de 2006, es una breve, pero no por ello menos incisiva, declaración que utiliza un ready-made, la figura de un juguete mecánico vestida de soldado norteamericano. Finalmente, en la segunda planta, In Still Waters Crocodiles Lurk (2004) de Odenbach consiste en una instalación de vídeo de dos canales que, como otras obras anteriores del artista, investiga y recorre países como Camerún, Sudáfrica, Ghana y Ruanda. Según Odenbach la obra, que no se trata de un documental, sino de una meditación perceptiva sobre la representación visual en África y, en particular, sobre la representación en los medios de comunicación occidentales, posee subtextos que abordan las disparidades entre nuestro mundo y el suyo, cuestiones sobre el valor de la vida, sobre las consecuencias de las migraciones y sobre los efectos de la violencia. 7 Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) pide a los espectadores que se tomen su tiempo. Y si cualquier otra muestra con sólo cinco obras expuestas podría verse en un par de minutos, no es ese el caso de la que nos ocupa. La exposición pone de manifiesto una plétora de incoherencias, incluyendo nuestra resistencia a plantearnos la inestabilidad en nuestra cotidianidad, en la que lo ambiguo y lo impredecible están desterrados. Y eso requiere tiempo. ¿Cómo se reflejará este nuevo estado de cosas en la realización, la recepción pública y la comprensión del arte contemporáneo?

Como rama del conocimiento que registra y explica los acontecimientos del pasado, el valor de la historia es hoy mínimo.

En Millennium Film Journal 8, una prestigiosa publicación neoyorquina, Grahame Weinbren titula uno de sus artículos, de gran carga emocional, sobre el cine experimental y las instalaciones fílmicas Post Future Past Perfect, una provocativa expresión que estaría en sintonía con la intención de nuestra muestra. En un paisaje intelectual post-foucaultiano, lo que Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) sugiere es que las visiones históricas que se

construyen sobre líneas rectas impiden el ir y venir en el tiempo a través de los textos, o incluso de las imágenes como textos. Visiones monolíticas movidas únicamente por ideas y motivaciones enfrentadas al hecho real no implica comprender el presente. Necesitamos incorporarlo al futuro y también al pasado.

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) Each of us feels protected within the artificial bubble of the present.

The outside world may be flooded or in flames, but it’s a distant world despite the fact that CNN reports such catastrophes as Our World Today. Television’s story that its news delivers the truth in real time is fiction. Rather it constructs images, high-tech and high-speed, though they are, through a process of montage, a method already employed for eighty years in photography and film. Television’s artificial montage and non-meaning1 delivers a pseudo-history of the present which arrives in our living rooms pre-packaged. With ultra crisp image and sound resolution it seduces its viewers so thoroughly that we forget that our daily window on the world is distorted. In a world where networks and links are key words, our interface with television is crucial.2 Yet the news, as delivered, is compiled and edited with standards closer to advertising than to traditional news reporting. And in television news, all news are ephemeral, disappearing in a breeze.

Inside the security of our artificial bubble history not only belongs to the distant past but becomes primarily a source of entertainment.

The History Channel is television’s response to the popularity of historical fiction and films, war stories and celebrity biographies.

The linear space of history developed by Euclid and sanctioned by the Enlightenment has not survived the Internet’s speed, simultaneity, and interconnectedness. Contemporary life allows no time to look closely at the world or to understand the subtle connections between the apparent stability of our daily routine and the complex subtexts which keep the modern state afloat. Any attempt to find baselines, beginnings, and/or linear narration remains unfulfilled. Technology, tied as it is to perception as well as consciousness, is a powerful agent. This is true for old as well as new technology and it is falsehood to believe that only the new has 18

altered reality; the printing press completely disturbed medieval society and radically altered its organization. Yet we cannot compare society today with that of six hundred years ago.3 All the features of the current geopolitical era began, according to numerous scholars, on September 11, 2001. The dreadful spectacle of September 11 produced an image worth a million, not a thousand words. Its catastrophic picture circulated the globe in a matter of minutes and it was instantly transformed into the icon of our present tense. For many it was the single event of September 11 that destabilized states and societies which had been living in a state of pseudo-power. Yet many others attribute our present condition to events over the last fifty years – all of which shaped the fantasies of our current cosmopolitan and (un)stable life. As Henri Lefebvre wrote just after the events of May 1968, those deviations that surround us are a microcosm of the general conditions of oppression, the spirit of a world without spirit.4 Over the last two decades the world without spirit has increased its bureaucratic control of a society obsessed by consumption. The unprecedented speed of image transmission has transformed the imagination of cosmopolitan social experience. Despite all the damage that such media distortion produces, spaces and situations still survive where it is possible to break out of these mental ghettos; they offer conditions whereby other stories can be shared.

Reading Art Today: Mass media is not the only and inevitable route; there are other ways to narrate and disclose events. Art is still a powerful medium, despite the commercialized state of the current global art market. In a recent conference the Italian philosopher Antonio Neri described the present art world as similar to the banking system; he considers banks and financial institutions to be the contemporary maecenas. Within Neri’s framework, the proliferation of biennials, art fairs, art-tours and blockbuster exhibitions is a crucial paradox: these spectacles are well-attended but disregarded. Yet they are still the primary arena where we Present Tense

exercise our contemporary viewing. This viewing has become almost an act of voyeurism, since people spend on average fifteen seconds looking at an art work, according to recent studies of museum audiences.

As a critical assessment of the present, this exhibition explores various possibilities through electronic imagery and media – forms well suited for artistic representation of contemporary life. The work offers powerful images of today’s world which emphasize vision over text and dialogue. Insisting on the relative autonomy of the culture, and exploring art’s specific interstices within political and economic structures, the framework of this exhibition involves a shift in emphasis from culture itself to the domain of cultural politics – a place where meanings are negotiated and relationships of dominance and subordination are defined and contested. As Stuart Hall has said, cultural practices then become a realm where one engages with and elaborates politics.5 Politics in this context has nothing to do with political parties, but with how people can express identity and how artists can define their own places in the world. In a period during which movements of people, ideas, and technology have come under growing and intensified scrutiny, it seems particularly important to reflect on the possibilities and challenges for understanding the fragility of the industrialized world’s power, despite its apparent freedom and abundance. The new local/global system has swiftly and relentlessly accelerated the process of cultural circulation and exchange. While these traits have existed for centuries, as theorist and author Irit Rogoff puts it in her book Terra Infirma: Geography’s Visual Culture: “We simply did not have the means and awareness by which to narrate this process.”

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) also challenges the act of seeing. It offers alternative means for art to provide a far-reaching experience which transforms the moment of viewing. prayed. The church, which sits on a small plaza and was restored in 1999, has become a satellite exhibition space for the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno.

Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) attempts to destabilize concepts that we take for granted. It offers alternative views of the present which challenge the public imagery defined by mass-media news; in doing so it offers different ways of seeing, and hence understanding, crucial current events such as suicide bombers and families living in refugee camps. The exhibition looks at the present through the works of two generations of artists from five countries: Stéphanie N’Duhirahe, Omer Fast, Antoni Muntadas, Marcel Odenbach and Martha Rosler. The catalog was planned as an essential part of the exhibition and five art critics were asked to produce new essays about each of the selected works, providing multiple points of view by which to understand and situate these eloquent and thought provoking artworks. Leaving the task of analyzing the works to them, this essay will only address the works briefly. The common element linking all their compelling visual discourse is a certain tension as well as the fact that they avoid an emphasis on style and manipulated imagery that makes so many video based art works problematic. On the contrary, their narratives are visually compelling as they attempt to explore deeper meanings behind their images – even when they are borrowed from the media, as in Omer Fast’s CNN Concatenated – a very long monologue edited entirely from recordings of Cable News Network hosts during 2001-2002. Fast’s is the first work the public sees on entering the exhibition. Shown on a television monitor located as in an airport waiting area, the work hovers over our heads as a schizophrenic shadow presenting the im/possibility of a new and truthful understanding of news events.6 The histories told in these works, some silent, such as Stéphanie N’Duhirahe’s video performance Sans titre (2006) or Muntadas’ Stuttgart (2006), require a new reading of images. N’Duhirahe maintains her balance as she tiptoes barefoot across a large concrete hall where a jumble of domestic and everyday objects – dishes, cups, Present Tense

an ashtray – are scattered across the floor. Yet, somehow she manages to stay on her toes. Always about to fall, yet maintaining her equilibrium, she offers a powerful image of the fragility of life.

Muntadas offers a critical view of globalized corporate power: the hypnotic image of the giant star of Mercedes-Benz that silently rotates atop the company’s headquarters which tower over the city of Stuttgart.

Connected to Fast’s critique of terrorism, Rosler investigates how social realities and political ideologies dominate ordinary life.

Prototype (God Bless America) from 2006 is a short but incisive statement that uses a ready-made mechanical toy figure dressed as an American soldier. Finally, on the second floor Odenbach’s In Still Waters Crocodiles Lurk (2004) is a two-channel video installation that, like some of his previous work, is a result of research in numerous travels to countries such as Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana and Rwanda. Not a documentary, according to the artist, this perceptive meditation on the visual representation of Africa, in particular the representation by Western media, has subtexts that include the disparities between our world and their’s, questions about the value of a life, about the implications of migrations and the effects of violence. 7 Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) asks viewers to take their time. If other exhibitions with only five works can be viewed in a couple of minutes, that is not the case here. Our present tense raises a plethora of incoherencies, including our unwillingness to address instability on a daily level – where ambiguity and unpredictability are banished – which require time. How might this new state of affairs reflect on the making, the public reception, and the understanding of contemporary art?

As a branch of knowledge that records and explains past events, history has little value today. In Millennium Film Journal 8 a prestigious New York publication, Grahame Weinbren titled one of his emotionally charged essays on experimental films and cinematic installations

Post Future Past Perfect, a provocative expression consistent with the intent of this exhibition. In an intellectual post-Foucault landscape, Present Tense (On Contemporaneity) suggests that historical views constructed on straight lines prevent viewers from moving back and forth in time via the tenses of texts – even image texts. Monolithic views, driven by single ideas and motives, confront the reality that grasping a single idea doesn’t constitute understanding in the present. We need to incorporate it into the future and the past as well.

Breaking News (a propósito de CNN Concatenated, de Omer Fast) CNN Concatenated llama la atención en primer lugar por su temible eficacia formal. El procedimiento, cuya realización suponemos laboriosa, es no obstante extremadamente sencillo: una fragmentación palabra a palabra de los discursos de diferentes presentadores de la cadena de noticias estadounidense CNN, y un montaje entrecortado que fuerza un enunciado totalmente distinto.

A medio camino entre la esquizofrenia audiovisual, la mecanización de la palabra, la manipulación y el periodismo coral, la obra suscita a la vez malestar y fascinación con su vertiginoso diluvio de palabras y de imágenes a un ritmo estroboscópico, casi epiléptico.

Sin embargo, más allá de su efecto contundente, se trata de una obra que posee múltiples niveles de comprensión y que se revela más compleja de lo que parece. Primero, y pese a su impacto visual inmediato, se trata de una obra esencialmente sonora, incluso fundamentalmente lingüística. Mediante una inversión de la lógica televisiva habitual, las imágenes aquí no pasan de ser escurridizas, fugitivas, sometidas a una necesidad acústica y semántica superior que guía su modo de aparición. News Flashes. Esa manipulación sintáctica ofrece, de este modo, una brillante formalización del carácter fundamentalmente inestable de los cuerpos fonéticos.

Todas las palabras enunciadas, al igual que las llamadas “deícticas” –esas pequeñas partículas lingüísticas que cambian de sentido en función del contexto en el que aparecen– operan como un elemento químico volátil, autónomo y caótico, capaz de recomponerse hasta el infinito con otros elementos para crear estructuras lingüísticas incontrolables. Un discurso contiene potencialmente todos los discursos. Este tipo de reorganización retórica recuerda la utilización de voces verdaderas grabadas en los programas informáticos de 30 Omer Fast

síntesis vocal, donde la palabra recompuesta por la máquina cobra una entidad extraña, hibridación artificial entre lo humano y lo robótico, con una superioridad manifiesta del orden sobre el órgano.

Lo vivo constreñido por la lógica informática. Machina ex homo.

Esta demostración de una mecanización teledirigida del discurso es evidentemente una crítica, en actos y en formas, de los medios de comunicación de masa. Un ejercicio de ventriloquia que denuncia la automatización rampante de la prensa, cuyos portavoces aparecen como marionetas ridículas y patéticas, sometidas a la autoridad del metadiscurso dictado por un demiurgo invisible. Espectacularización, teatralización, reificación del periodismo audiovisual. Pavor, también, pues el discurso cuasi-subliminal creado por el artista mantiene la autoridad natural del medio televisivo y revela su tendencia hacia el adoctrinamiento. Sabemos que la televisión lleva a cabo una especie de masaje electrónico del ojo, lo que podría explicar sus virtudes hipnóticas y adictivas. Más allá, CNN Concatenated nos muestra que se trata igualmente de un masaje mental. Los comentarios a priori incoherentes de los presentadores están todos relacionados con una voluntad de control psicoanalítico sobre el espectador. Manipulación mental, tele-evangelismo generalizado. De hecho, el mentor catódico de Fast destila órdenes y consejos a partir de una posición dominante, culpabilizante y moral. Convertido en ofensa, en injuria, en humillación verbal, el comentario descarrila, rozando a veces la locura, alternando declaraciones seudo-tranquilizadoras con consideraciones apocalípticas.

Obsesiones, repeticiones, paranoia, coprolalia, síndrome de Tourette: es en estos deslices de registro permanentes y compulsivos donde reside, por otro lado, el carácter profundamente fantástico de la obra.

Como si una especie de subtexto implícito, malsano y monstruoso existiese en los intersticios de una comunicación de masas supuestamente objetiva. Nos recuerda el modo en que la niña poseída por el demonio de El exorcista se ponía a vociferar injurias y amenazas alternando timbres de voz, idiomas y cambiando de rostro. ¿Acaso en la religión cristiana no reconocemos la figura del “maligno” Present Tense

(el mal), por su capacidad de embelesar a su público mediante la palabra, adoptando cada vez una apariencia diferente? La logorrea lingüística del cancerbero audiovisual creado por Omer Fast podría perfectamente relacionarse con ese mismo tipo de determinación malévola.

CNN Concatenated es también una obra política por su manera de mostrar los insidiosos efectos de una comunicación de masas que se muta en transacción individual. El meta-presentador híbrido de Omer Fast, que no cesa de interpelar personalmente al teleespectador a través de la pantalla del televisor, fuerza de este modo una intimidad turbadora y perversa. Sabemos cómo utilizan los políticos en los mítines el saludo individual a alguien que no existe, de modo que cada uno de los integrantes de la multitud pueda creer que va dirigido a él. Sabemos, de un modo más global, que el giro reaganiano de la década de 1980 volcó el orden de lo político inaugurando una sistematización de la escala individual del discurso a expensas de lo colectivo y de la masa, privilegiando una alocución directa y personalizada a los ciudadanos. Una falsificación semántica que permite que lo político penetre individualmente los cuerpos y las mentes. Eso es también lo que ilustra este vídeo, con pertinencia y no sin una cierta dosis de humor.

Breaking News (on CNN Concatenated,

by Omer Fast) CNN Concatenated strikes us first of all because of its frightful formal effectiveness. The procedure, which we might think laborious, is nonetheless extremely simple: a word by word fragmentation of the discourse of several newscasters from the American news channel CNN, in conjunction with a jerky reediting that forces a completely different utterance. Somewhere between audiovisual schizophrenia, speech mechanisation, manipulation and journalistic chorus, this work produces uneasiness and fascination at the same time through its mind-spinning outpouring of words and images delivered in a stroboscopic, almost epileptic flow.

However, beyond the striking effect, it is a piece with many levels of interpretation which reveals itself more complex than it would seem. In the first place, despite its immediate visual impact, it is essentially a sound work, even fundamentally linguistic. By upturning the usual television logic, images here only appear in a skidding, fugitive manner, as they are subjected to a superior acoustic and semantic need that guides the mode in which they appear. News Flashes. This syntactic manipulation also avails of a brilliant formalisation of the fundamentally unstable character of the phonetic bodies. Every word that is uttered, similarly to “deictic words� (small linguistic particles that change meaning depending on their context), operates as a volatile chemical element, autonomous and chaotic, capable of infinitely recomposing itself with other words to create uncontrollable linguistic structures.

Any speech potentially contains all speeches. This type of rhetorical reorganisation is reminiscent of the use of real recorded voices in speech synthesis software, where speech is recomposed by the Present Tense

machine and acquires a strange status, becoming an artificial hybrid halfway between the human and the robotic, with a manifest superiority of order over organ. The living constrained by computer logic. Machina ex homo.

This demonstration of a remote-controlled speech mechanisation is obviously a criticism, through action and form, of mass media. An exercise in ventriloquism that exposes the rampant automation of the news, with spokespeople appearing as ridiculous, pathetic puppets controlled by the authority of a metadiscourse that is dictated by an invisible demiurge. The spectacularisation, theatricalisation, reification of audiovisual journalism. There is terror, too, for the quasi-subliminal discourse created by the artist maintains the natural authority of the television medium and exposes its tendency towards indoctrination. We know how television effects a kind of electronic eye massage, which may explain its hypnotic and addictive virtues. Furthermore, CNN Concatenated shows us how it also performs a mind massage. The newscasters’ statements, a priori incoherent, are all related to the psychoanalytic control of spectators. Mind manipulation. Extended television evangelism. In fact, Fast’s cathodic mentor produces orders and advice from a moral, dominating position that tries to instil guilt in the viewers. Turned into offence, insult, verbal humiliation, the newscast goes astray, bordering at times on madness, alternating pseudo-reassuring statements with apocalyptic comments.

Obsessions, repetitions, paranoia, coprolalia, Tourette’s syndrome: the deeply fantastic character of the piece lies precisely in these permanent and compulsive slips of register. As if some implicit subtext, unwholesome and monstrous, existed within the gaps of an allegedly objective mass-communication medium. It is reminiscent of the little girl who is possessed by the devil in The Exorcist and shouts insults and threats while alternating languages, the pitches of her voice, and while changing her face. Isn’t the figure of the devil known in Christian religion for its capacity to court its audience 34 Omer Fast

through words, adopting each time a different appearance? The linguistic logorrhoea of the audiovisual watchdog created by Omer Fast could equally relate to a similar type of malicious determination.

CNN Concatenated is also a political piece in the way it shows the insidious effects of a mass-communication medium that mutates into an individual transaction. Omer Fast’s hybrid meta-newscaster, who never ceases to personally address the viewer through the television screen, forces thus a disturbing and perverse kind of intimacy. We know how politicians wave during rallies at some nonexistent individual, so that everyone in the crowd may think the gesture is directed at him. In a more global way, we know how in the 1980s the Reagan shift overturned the political order by introducing a systematisation of the individual scale of the discourse at the expense of the collective scale, of the masses, by privileging a direct, personal way of addressing citizens. A semantic distortion that allows the political to penetrate bodies and minds individually. This video also illustrates this, pertinently and not without a certain dose of humour.

Muntadas. Stuttgart (for H.H.) Hay dos conceptos que Muntadas ha empleado en diversas ocasiones para referirse a algunos proyectos suyos y que conviene reconsiderar nuevamente al aproximarse al trabajo Stuttgart (for H.H.) (2006). Estos conceptos son la idea de ritual y la noción de protocolo. Por ritual entiende Muntadas toda una serie de dinámicas que se desarrollan en los contextos urbanos y que están vinculadas a fenómenos tan distintos como los flujos turísticos (City Museum, 1991-2007), el consumo cultural indiscrimado (On Translation: Stand By, 2005-2007) o la percepción de la memoria de un lugar específico (Media Sites/Media Monuments, Buenos Aires, 2007). En todos estos proyectos, así como en otros que también profundizan en la misma dirección, el ritual se transforma en una especie de conducta colectiva que permite explorar los condicionantes sociales, económicos, políticos y culturales que subyacen tras de sí, una especie de metáfora o, mejor, de metonimia a través de la cual desenmascarar los impulsos que articulan, reconfiguran y determinan la percepción que se tiene de la ciudad y de la historia.

En cuanto al concepto de protocolo –uno de los últimos proyectos de Muntadas, precisamente realizado en la Württembergischer Kuntsverein de Stuttgart en 2006, llevaba por título Protokolle1–, éste se refiere a las “etiquetas sociales” o connotaciones que regulan los ámbitos de lo público y lo privado, a los códigos de actuación que discriminan unos espacios, unos usos y unos comportamientos de otros. La idea de protocolo provoca, así, múltiples lecturas y asociaciones en ámbitos distintos, posibilitando una comprensión crítica de las estructuras simbólicas y sus mecanismos de exclusión y de inclusión.

Emparentado con propuestas como Portrait (1995), donde se observaba un conjunto de coreografías gestuales, anónimas pero estereotipadamente relacionadas con el poder, y con On Translation: On View (2004), en el que un grupo de personas situadas en un Present Tense

espacio inhóspito de espera miran y son miradas al mismo tiempo, Stuttgart (for H.H.) participa, por tanto, de las dos ideas antes mencionadas y, al mismo tiempo, las reformula hacia otras significaciones. Es importante señalar que se trata de una propuesta realizada simultáneamente a otro proyecto en Stuttgart y que, por tanto, participa de una misma exploración acerca de las características urbanas, históricas y sociales de esta ciudad alemana. Así, en el trabajo aparece un icono corporativo asociado a cierto nivel de sofisticación, mercantilismo y opulencia, reconocible en cualquier lugar del mundo y especialmente significativo en el contexto de Alemania. Este logotipo corona un espacio arquitectónico indeterminado y gira sobre su eje de forma ralentizada, como si se tratase de un gran ojo o de un radar que peina lo que sucede a su alrededor. La cámara que registra esta imagen se encuentra detenida, en estado de observación, lo que produce un loop que nunca parece terminarse, una coreografía reiterativa en la cual vemos a este símbolo desde una perspectiva muy cercana, con una calidad visual voluntariamente poco cuidada, típica de las grabaciones de vigilancia. Así, el signo comercial sustituye, como señalización urbana y como punto de referencia de la memoria particular, al monumento conmemorativo convirtiéndose en el depositario de una forma de identidad colectiva asociada a valores económicos y jerárquicos.

Muntadas. Stuttgart (for H.H.) There are two concepts that Muntadas has used on several occasions to refer to some of his projects, and which are worth reconsidering when examining the piece Stuttgart (for H.H.) (2006). These concepts are the idea of ritual and of protocol. Muntadas’ understanding of “ritual” comprises an entire series of dynamics which unfold in urban contexts and are linked to such diverse phenomena as tourist flows (City Museum, 1991-2007), indiscriminate cultural consumption (On Translation: Stand By, 2005-2007) and the perception of the memory of a specific place (Media Sites/Media Monuments, Buenos Aires, 2007). In all of these projects, as well as in others which delve in the same subject-matter, rituals are rendered a sort of collective behaviour which allow for an exploration of social, economic, political and cultural factors under which lies a metaphor, or, rather, a metonymy for the unmasking of the impulses which articulate, reconfigure and define our perception of the city and history.

As for the concept of protocol – one of Muntadas’ most recent projects, produced at the Württembergischer Kuntsverein in Stuttgart, in 2006, was in fact entitled Protokolle1 –, it refers to the “social labels” or connotations which control public and private realms, the codes of behaviour legislating spaces, uses, and the behaviour of others. The idea of protocol thus gives rise to many interpretations and associations in a range of contexts, allowing for a critical understanding of symbolic structures and their mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion.

Therefore, Stuttgart (for H.H.), with its links to works such as Portrait (1995), which featured a series of gestural choreographies, anonymous yet stereotypically connected to power, and On Translation: On View (2004), in which a group of people standing in an inhospitable waiting space are simultaneously watchful and watched, partakes of the two ideas mentioned above while at the same time, it reformulates them to lend them new meanings. important to point out that this project was been carried out in parallel to Muntadas’ participation in another Stuttgart production which emerged from the same exploration of the urban, social and historical characteristics of the German city. Accordingly, the piece features a corporate logo, symbolising a certain standard of sophistication, mercantilism and opulence, which is recognised anywhere in the world, and is particularly meaningful in the German context. This logo crowns an undefined architectural space, and slowly spins on its own axis, as if it were a great eye or radar surveying everything around it. The camera capturing this image has been stopped, and lies in a state of watchfulness, giving rise to a seemingly endless loop, a reiterative choreography which allows us to see this symbol close-up, with a deliberately rough visual quality, typical of CCTV footage. Thus, the commercial logo replaces the commemorative building in its role of urban sign and reference point of individual memory, becoming the repository of a form of collective identity linked to economic and hierarchical values.

Sans titre Dos pies se posan sobre un lector de CDs, buscan el equilibrio y siguen su camino. Un primer plano subraya el esfuerzo empleado, la fuerza necesaria para realizar este gesto y la precariedad de dicho estado.

Poco a poco la cámara va tomando distancia. El espectador descubre los objetos que amueblan el espacio y que constituyen los puntos de apoyo sobre los que la artista realiza su itinerario. Una vajilla, un electrodoméstico, una regadera, unos prismáticos… objetos cotidianos de los que todos nosotros estamos rodeados y que nunca nos paramos a mirar. En esta obra los objetos adquieren una dimensión completamente distinta. Desposeídos de lo que constituye su esencia, es decir, su utilidad, los juzgamos en función de otros criterios. Su forma y su materia se vuelven determinantes: el sacacorchos resulta peligroso y el recogedor hospitalario. Ciertamente, la obra de Stéphanie N’Duhirahe, pariente lejano del ready-made, dirige una mirada nueva, no exenta de poesía, hacia estos objetos de ingrato destino. Los objetos cobran vida bajo el peso de la artista: la regadera se deshincha, los condimentos explotan, la grapadora grapa. Sobre un suelo de cemento bruto, todas estas cosas tienen un aire de abandono y de desuso.

El espacio se asemeja a un cementerio en el que yacen las reliquias de nuestra banalidad. Stéphanie se pasea por él alegremente, descalza y con cuidado de no estropear nada, realizando un ballet cuya aparente facilidad deja sin embargo entrever la proeza técnica que ello implica.

El equilibrio está en la base de este trabajo. Tenerse en pie sobre una pila de platos, sobre un cazo de fondue o un teléfono móvil precisa un verdadero talento. La composición así lo resalta al centrarse en un primer momento sobre los pies de la artista, como lo hiciera Alain Resnais con las manos del artista en el filme Visite à Hans Hartung (1947). Finalmente se desvela el cuerpo en su conjunto, completamente extendido en su busca de estabilidad. leyes de la gravedad. Se subraya la dualidad entre el sufrimiento del cuerpo y el espectáculo etéreo que se nos ofrece, así como su fragilidad. En efecto, amenaza en todo momento con desmoronarse y romper la magia. La acción no se desarrolla lejos del suelo, pero el espectador queda suspendido de los gestos de la artista y nadie duda por un instante que aun cuando ésta no cayese, no dejaría de verse engullida por el abismo.

Finalmente, el sonido constituye un elemento fundamental de esta obra. El silencio de la performance únicamente se ve alterado por el ruido de los objetos que, al caer o al deformarse, resuenan en el espacio vacío, lo que viene a reforzar el aspecto a la vez dramático y poético del vídeo. Dramático, porque los objetos parecen resistirse a la intervención de la artista y enrojecer de ira. Esos chasquidos que parecen gritos de rebeldía primero y de rendición después, toman al espectador por sorpresa. El ruido de Sans titre se inscribe también en la poética. Reunidos, los sonidos producidos por los objetos forman una suite incómoda, una melodía disonante, cercana al caos, que por su aspecto desorganizado y enérgico remite a la desobediencia y a la vida. El sonido persiste en el vídeo tras la desaparición de la imagen. ¿Constituye Sans titre una puesta en escena de la lucha por la vida?

Sobrevolar lo material, burlarse de él, pisarlo, ¿sería la fábula de nuestra sociedad de consumo, descrita en toda su ambigüedad, ya que, al mismo tiempo, son los propios objetos los que nos permiten no tocar el suelo? Sin duda, pero mucho más que eso, el equilibrio entre el suelo y el cielo remite al proceso artístico, al impulso que nace desde abajo y aspira hacia lo alto. La desorganización aparente del espacio recuerda el caos del que surge la creación artística, aquí bajo la forma de una performance aérea. Partiendo de objetos que forman parte de su universo cotidiano, la artista se reapropia de este espacio para ofrecernos una visión del mundo y de su trabajo artístico. Esa sensación de libertad es palpable, se transmite al espectador, y transmite a su trabajo la fuerza y la energía que de él se desprenden.

Sans titre Two feet are standing on a CD player, trying to get their balance, then they continue their course. The close-up underlines the effort made, the strength needed to achieve this, as well as the precariousness of the stance.

The camera backs off little by little, and the viewer discovers the objects that furnish the space and serve as points of support on which the artist will run her course. Dishes, an appliance, a watering can… everyday things that are all around us and we never look at.

Objects take on a completely different dimension in this work.

Stripped of what constitutes their essence, their function, we judge them on the basis of different criteria. Their shape and their matter become determining: the corkscrew looks dangerous, the dustpan hospitable. A distant relative of the ready-made, Stéphanie N’Duhirahe’s work casts, indeed, a new gaze on these objects of humble fate, a gaze that is not without poetry. The objects come to life under the artist’s weight: the watering can deflates, the condiments explode, the stapler staples. On the raw concrete floor all these things seem abandoned, in disuse. The space resembles a cemetery where the relics of our banality lie. Stéphanie walks cheerfully through it, barefoot, taking care not to damage anything, in a ballet whose apparent ease lets us see, nonetheless, the technical prowess involved.

Balance is indeed at the heart of this work. Standing on a pile of dishes, on a fondue pot or a mobile phone, takes real talent. This is underlined by the framing, focusing first on the artist’s feet, just as Alain Resnais focused on the artist’s hands in the film Visite à Hans Hartung (1947). The whole body is finally unveiled, fully stretched in its search for stability. This extreme concentration is palpable in each of her gestures, as the search for a point of harmony permanently challenges the laws of gravity. of us is emphasised, and so is its fragility: at any given moment she could fall and break the magic. The action does not take place high off the ground, but the spectator hangs on to the artist’s gestures and no one doubts for an instant that, even if she doesn’t fall, she will be engulfed by the abyss just the same.

Finally, sound is a fundamental element in this work. During the performance, silence is only disrupted by the noise of the objects which, as they fall or get deformed, resounds in the empty space, thus contributing to the video’s dramatic/poetic aspect. Dramatic, indeed, as the objects seem to resist the artist’s intervention and turn red with rage. Taking the viewer by surprise, the snapping sounds first seem like screams of revolt, and then like sounds of rendition. The noise in “Untitled” also belongs to the poetics of the work. Put together, the sounds emitted by the objects form an awkward suite. Approaching chaos, the disorganised, energetic aspect of this discordant melody is reminiscent of disobedience and of life. The sound persists on the video after the image is gone.

Is Sans titre a staging of the “struggle for life”? Would flying over the material, mocking it, stepping on it, be a fable of our consumerist society, described here in all its ambiguity, since, at the same time, the objects allow us to stay off the ground? No doubt, but, furthermore, the balance between the ground and the sky alludes to the artistic process, to the impulse that originates down below and seeks to soar upward. The apparent disarray of the space recalls the chaos from which artistic creation emerges, here in the form of an aerial performance. Using objects that are part of her everyday universe, Stéphanie N’Duhirahe reappropriates this space and presents a vision of the world as well as of her artistic work. This palpable feeling of freedom is conveyed to the viewer and is what lends her work the power and energy it communicates.

Marcel Odenbach: Los cocodrilos acechan en aguas tranquilas Una cierta parte de las obras de Marcel Odenbach se alimentan de su investigación y de sus viajes por países como Camerún, Sudáfrica, Ghana o Ruanda, reflexionando a la vez sobre las formas adoptadas por la representación visual del continente africano, muy en particular sobre los medios de comunicación occidentales.

Mientras trabajaba en los archivos fílmicos de las Naciones Unidas, Odenbach se topó con un material fílmico que documentaba el genocidio llevado a cabo en 1994 en Ruanda, un hallazgo que supuso el punto de partida para el proceso de creación de un corpus en el que el artista propone una reflexión personal sobre la incalificable violencia de ese episodio de infausta memoria y las consecuencias que tuvo para las gentes de aquel país. Al referirse a esa obra, Odenbach la describe como “una documentación subjetiva sobre un drama en siete capítulos” que evocan ese turbulento periodo de la reciente historia ruandesa a través de un rico montaje que reúne más de treinta minutos de material de archivo y filmaciones de vídeo recién creadas. El filme arranca con la imagen de la luz y el sonido saliendo de un proyector de cine.

Desde ese preciso instante, la atención del espectador se centrará en la construcción y el poder de la imagen en movimiento, examinando con detalle sus propiedades materiales, su proyección y difusión y el papel fundamental que desempeña en la producción de noticias y de historia.

Los dos primeros capítulos del filme nos muestran una Ruanda rica y de exuberante vegetación, una tierra de abundancia. La proyección dual de gran formato posee una cualidad inmersiva llena de lirismo, con el paisaje emergiendo con una poderosísima presencia; una continuación entre el pasado y el presente. embargo, como el propio título de la obra se encarga de anunciar, hasta en este aparente paraíso el peligro acecha justo debajo de la superficie. Un examen minucioso del flujo de imágenes nos permitirá descubrir los signos de ese peligro: la fragmentación, unas manchas oscuras que van impregnando la tierra y unos descoloridos andrajos… Unos recuerdos angustiosos, un terror que parece inscribirse en el estudio de las manos, los ojos, las bocas.

La interacción coreografiada del material fílmico que vemos en las pantallas va tejiendo unas asociaciones y conexiones que se asemejan a las secuencias de un sueño. Los flashes de la pesadilla del genocidio coexisten con muestras de la existencia cotidiana: el trabajo en el campo, la vida doméstica, la preparación de los alimentos y el momento compartido de la comida. Unas imágenes luminosas que se reflejan en el verde oscuro de la superficie del agua, desviando la atención del espectador hacia el título de la obra e intensificando así la sensación de oscuro presagio y de miedo.

Como espectadores, aportamos al desentrañamiento de esos ensayos virtuales nuestro propio mix de conocimiento incompleto.

Las complejas raíces del conflicto ruandés se hunden en una amplia variedad de factores –entre los que la herencia del dominio colonial representa un papel nada desdeñable– que los relatos de los medios de comunicación tienden a simplificar en exceso y cuya complejidad está presente en la obra, que desdibuja, además, los límites entre la idea de víctima y la del perpetrador. Odenbach no aspira a ofrecernos un relato documental del propio genocidio, sino que, a través de un montaje de signos alusivos a la violencia, como los enseres destrozados y esparcidos o las imágenes mudas de niños llorando y sufriendo, sugiere en su obra un sentido del horror tan penetrante como contenido. In Still Waters… nos propone un espacio para el recuerdo y para la reflexión sobre las secuelas de un trauma violento y sus consecuencias psicológicas.

Pero la obra aborda también la propia vivencia personal del artista en la Alemania de la posguerra, país en el que creció y que se encontraba todavía inmerso en el proceso de asimilación de los Present Tense

horrores del Holocausto, de su participación en un conflicto mundial sangriento y prolongado y de su traumática división (y, más recientemente, de su reunificación). En las secuencias finales, la silueta de un niño alarga una mano para tocar la fantasmal proyección de un rostro de mujer: un tierno acto de contacto humano que sirve, quizás, no sólo como una poderosa evocación de un sentido abrumador y onírico de pérdida e incredulidad, sino también para suscitar en nosotros interrogantes sobre la posibilidad de reconciliación entre la víctima y el verdugo, un tema recurrente y apremiante en la obra de Odenbach.

El capítulo sexto trae a colación el espectro del fracaso inicial de las fuerzas políticas internacionales para prevenir el genocidio masivo, y la subsiguiente resolución de que esos crímenes contra la humanidad no vuelvan a repetirse nunca jamás. Las imágenes de archivo y mediáticas contenidas en In Still Waters… recuerdan al espectador que, a pesar de la reivindicación del nunca jamás, ese genocidio específico de finales del siglo XX no sólo tuvo lugar, sino que se retransmitió a los hogares de todo el planeta casi en tiempo real. En relación al trabajo con material encontrado (ciclo del hallazgo, recopilación y, en última instancia, uso de las imágenes), Odenbach describe la peculiar situación del coleccionista afirmando que “quien posee algo lleva, también, una carga, en este caso una carga no sólo material, sino también emocional”. Una carga o responsabilidad que, mediante el acto de hacer público ese material, se transfiere también, al menos en parte, al espectador por medio de su participación en un proceso crítico de contemplación, cuestionamiento y memoria colectivos.

Marcel Odenbach: In Still Waters Crocodiles Lurk A number of Marcel Odenbach’s works have been informed by research and travel in countries such as Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana and Rwanda, and have considered the ways in which the African continent has been visually represented, in particular by the Western media. While working in the film archives of the United Nations Odenbach came across documentary footage of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and thus began a process of making a work that might offer reflection upon the unspeakable violence of this infamous episode and its consequences for the people of that country. The artist has described this work as “A subjective documentation about a drama in seven chapters”; through these chapters, this turbulent period of Rwanda’s recent history is evoked through a rich montage that weaves together over thirty minutes of archival and newly created video footage. The film begins with an image of light and sound emanating from a film projector. From the outset the viewer’s attention is drawn to the construction and the power of the moving image: its material qualities; its projection and dissemination; and its critical role in the production of news and of history, are brought under scrutiny.

The first two chapters of the film show a rich and verdant Rwanda, a “land of milk and honey”. The large-scale dual projection has a lyrical immersive quality in which the landscape features as a powerful presence; a continuum between past and present.

However as the title of the work forewarns, even in this seeming paradise danger lurks close to the surface. Closer scrutiny of the flow of images reveals signs of damage: fragmentation; dark stains seeping over the earth and discolouring ragged garments.

Anguished memories and fear seem inscribed in studies of hands, eyes, and mouths.

The choreographed interplay of the footage across and between the two screens weaves associations and connections like sequences in a dream. Alongside glimpses of the nightmare of the genocide we find signs of the everyday: working the land; domestic life; the preparation and sharing of food. Images of light reflecting off the dark green surface of water draw the viewer back to the title of the work, intensifying a sense of foreboding and fear. As viewers we bring our own mix of incomplete knowledge to our unravelling of these visual essays. The Rwandan conflict has complex roots in a variety of factors – not least the legacies of colonial rule – which media accounts tended to oversimplify, and the work reflects this complexity. Similarly in this work there is a blurring between the idea of victim and perpetrator. Odenbach is not concerned with presenting a documentary account of the genocide itself, but through a montage of signs referring to the violence – such as broken and scattered belongings, or silent footage of children crying and in distress – the film evokes a pervasive yet stifled sense of terror. In Still Waters… proposes a space for remembering, and for reflection upon the aftermath of violent trauma and its psychological consequences.

The work is also concerned with the artist’s personal experience of growing up in post-war Germany, a country still coming to terms with the horrors of the Holocaust, its involvement in a bloody and protracted world-wide conflict, and traumatic partition (and more recently re-unification). In the closing sequences of the work, the silhouetted figure of a child reaches out a hand to touch the spectral projection of a woman’s face. This tender act of human contact perhaps not only powerfully evokes an overwhelming and dream-like sense of loss and disbelief, but also raises questions as to the possibility of reconciliation between victim and perpetrator, a recurring and urgent theme of Odenbach’s work.

Chapter six raises the spectre of an earlier failure of international political forces to prevent mass genocide, and the ensuing resolve that such crimes against humanity should never again be permitted to happen. The archival and media images contained within In Still

Waters… remind the viewer that, despite the claims of never again, this particular genocide of the late 20th century was not only perpetrated, but also broadcast into homes across the globe almost in real-time. Writing about the practice of working with found footage, (the cycle of finding, collecting and ultimately disposal of images) Odenbach describes the peculiar situation of the collector. “One who possesses something also bears a burden, and, in this case the burden is not just material but emotional too.” Through the act of making this material public, the viewer too takes on some of that burden or responsibility, through participating in the critical process of collective looking, enquiry and remembering.

¡Dios bendiga a América!

“God Bless America!” (¡Dios bendiga a América!) exclama un trompetista de juguete con casco y vestido con ropa de camuflaje verde y marrón antes de lanzarse a la interpretación de la canción del mismo título.

La obra comienza con un ajustado primer plano del soldadotrompetista y de la brillante campana de latón del extremo de su trompeta de juguete. Prototype (God Bless America) registra la interpretación musical de un minuto de duración del juguete mecánico. El muñeco-soldado aparece en una acogedora cocina rodeado de otros objetos: un televisor en miniatura, un pequeño espejo de marco dorado, unas cortinas de encaje blanco, una colorida calcomanía con forma de hoja otoñal sobre la puerta del jardín, una extraña escultura realizada con un desordenado juego verde de té...

El muñeco posee un aspecto peculiar: su singular casco y sus rasgos vagamente asiáticos son inusuales en un juguete patriótico americano. Mientras el muñeco se balancea al interpretar con vocecilla metálica su sentimental y patriótica canción, la cámara se acerca y se desliza por su cuerpecillo hasta detenerse en un primer plano de una pierna, con la pernera del pantalón del uniforme enrollada sobre la rodilla revelando una articulación prostética de plástico y metal. La cámara sigue descendiendo hasta alcanzar la base de la pequeña figura en donde se lee la frase “God Bless America” flanqueada por unas diminutas banderas americanas.

En ese momento, la canción llega a su fin.

La canción posee una interesante historia y funciona a menudo como himno nacional alternativo de EE.UU., sustituto del más antiguo.

Magistral –y belicosa–, Star-Spangled Banner (Bandera llena de estrellas) fue escrita en 1917 por Irving Berlin, quien acabaría convertido en prolífico compositor, principalmente de musicales de Broadway y de canciones populares. tema para un espectáculo musical del ejército en esa ciudad en la que prestó servicio durante la Primera Guerra Mundial (los judíos rusos habían huido de su país para evitar la muerte de sus hijos a manos del ejército del zar o las levas forzosas que a menudo se prolongaban por un tiempo indefinido; por ello, servir en el ejército americano equivalía a afirmar las diferencias entre ambos ejércitos). Al final, Berlin no la incluyó en la revista, pero decidió resucitarla en 1938 con ocasión de una concentración en contra de Hitler. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y después, se interpretó continuamente en una conmovedora versión a cargo de la popularísima Kate Smith, permaneciendo en la memoria de los americanos durante muchos años. Tras los ataques sufridos en EE.UU. el 11 de septiembre de 2001, el tema ha acompañado a menudo demostraciones de patriotismo, superando a America the Beautiful y a su reverencial invocación a la tierra, la libertad, la fraternidad, con sus “majetuosas montañas púrpura” y “ambarinas olas de grano”, considerado por muchos el himno nacional (no oficial). Una de las causas del renacer de God Bless America podría estribar en su primera palabra, God (Dios), que rompe con el laicismo y parece anteponer la idea de Dios a la de nación en un periodo de conflictos que ha llevado a un gran número de norteamericanos a elegir la expresión religiosa como forma de lucha (una lucha entendida, de forma connotativa, como judeocristiana en contra de un enemigo que opera bajo la enseña del Islam. Seguramente, quienquiera que escogiera God Bless America para ese danzarín muñeco-soldado, made in China, lo habrá hecho tanto por ese motivo como por su simple ritmo marcial.

–––––– Por lo general, Prototype (God Bless America) se exhibe en un monitor de tipo comercial y de tamaño muy reducido, similar al utilizado por familias o individuos para ver DVDs durante los viajes.

de una visión “prohibida”, la del mecanismo, por lo general oculto, del exagerado movimiento del personaje.

Y aunque el título Prototype sugiere un modelo de apariencia y comportamiento ejemplares, la visión del mecanismo del muñeco despeja cualquier tipo de ilusión inconsciente –un resto de la infancia– que el espectador pueda albergar acerca de que esa miniatura de cuerda pudiera encerrar una personita intacta bajo su uniforme, de funcionamiento, más que técnico, mágico. Quizás podríamos extender esa no del todo disipada fascinación adulta por las miniaturas de movimiento al deseo de poseer unos diminutos soldados en un lejano paisaje bélico, que solemos ver, sobre todo, en pequeñas imágenes de televisión, en la web, en el periódico, que generen soluciones mágicas a los desconcertantes problemas políticos. ¡Qué asombroso, qué inquietante resulta verlos heridos o defectuosos!

Frecuentemente, Prototype (God Bless America) se exhibe en combinación con una pierna prostética de tres metros y medio de altura, pintada de azul, que da patadas lentamente, titulada Prototype (Freedom Is Not Free). Las dos piezas sugieren la inconsciencia de quienes confunden deseo y realidad, sus percepciones personales con la verdad, haciéndonos pensar en los costes ignorados que la mutilación y la muerte acarrean a quienes luchan, a quienes aplauden la lucha, y a todos los demás desganados participantes y víctimas de la guerra. Todos ellos atrapados en una estrategia de dominación que es también una suerte de mecanismo que avanza insensible por vidas y territorios, mientras interpreta un patriótico y sentimental estribillo.

God Bless America!

“God Bless America!” announces a helmeted toy trumpeter, dressed in green and brown camouflage, before he launches into his song, God Bless America.

The work begins with a tight close-up of the soldier-trumpeter and the reflective brass bulb of his toy trumpet. Prototype (God Bless America) records the one-minute musical performance of the mechanical toy. The soldier doll is shown situated in a cozy kitchen amid other items: a miniature television set, a small mirror in goldpainted frame, white lace window curtains, a colorful autumn-leaf decal on the garden door, a strange sculpture composed of a jumbled green tea set. The doll is odd-looking: its strange helmet, its vaguely Asian features unusual in an American patriotic toy. As the toy bobs and sways, singing his sentimental patriotic song in a tinny, tiny voice, the camera closes in and slides down the small body. The camera cuts to a close-up of a leg with the uniform rolled above the knee, revealing the flexing plastic-and-metal prosthetic joint. The camera pans down, reaching the toy figure’s small base with the words “God Bless America,” flanked by tiny American flags, as the song draws to its end.

The song itself has an interesting history and is often treated as an alternate national anthem for the United States, secondary to the older, more magisterial – and more warlike – Star-Spangled Banner.

The song was written in 1917 by Irving Berlin, who became a highly prolific composer primarily of Broadway show tunes and popular songs. Berlin, a Russian Jew who immigrated with his family to New York as a small child, wrote the song for an army revue in New York, where he was serving during the First World War (Russian Jews, in particular, fled Russia to avoid having their boys killed by the Tsar’s army or conscripted, often for indefinite terms; thus, serving in the US army was an affirmation of its difference.) Berlin did not include it in the revue after all, but he decided to revive it in 1938, to rally Present Tense

people in the fight against Hitler. Sung every week, through the Second World War and beyond, in a stirring rendition by the very popular Kate Smith, it remained on American lips for many years.

After the attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, the song has often accompanied displays of patriotism, outdistancing America the Beautiful, with its reverential invocation of soil, liberty, and brotherhood, its “purple mountain majesties” and “amber waves of grain,” widely considered the (unofficial) national hymn. One may trace part of the revival of God Bless America to its first word, God, which breaches secularism and appears to put God before nation in a period of conflict that many Americans have couched in religious terms, as a struggle (understood, albeit by connotation, to be a [Judaeo-] Christian one) against an enemy operating under the banner of Islam. Whoever chose God Bless America for the dancing soldier doll made in China, surely stemmed from this as much as from the simplified martial beat.

–––––– Prototype (God Bless America) is generally exhibited on a very small consumer monitor, the kind that families or individuals use for viewing DVDs on trips. It is a miniature of a miniature of a miniature: a small image of a short performance of a toy soldier. The repetitive loop adds the dimension of endless repetition of a “forbidden” view, that of the character’s normally hidden mechanism of its exaggerated movement.

The title Prototype suggests a model of exemplary appearance and behavior. But the view of the toy’s mechanism shocks whatever unconscious illusion – a childhood leftover – the viewer may harbor of the clockwork miniature as an intact little person under its uniform, with its performance magical rather than engineered. The adult’s not-quite-dissipated fascination with performing miniatures can be generalized, perhaps, to the desire for tiny soldiers in a faraway landscape of war, glimpsed primarily in small images on television, on the web, in the newspaper, to produce magical

solutions to perplexing political problems. How shocking and unsettling, then when they are injured or imperfect.

Prototype (God Bless America) is often shown in conjunction with a three-and-a-half-meter high, slowly kicking, blue-painted prosthetic leg, entitled Prototype (Freedom Is Not Free). Both suggest a lack of self-awareness of those who mistake their desires for realities, their self-assessments for truth. They call to mind the unacknowledged costs of maiming and death to those who fight, to those who cheer on the fight and to the other, unwilling participants and victims of war.

All are caught up in a strategy of dominance that also is a kind of mechanism that strides unfeeling across lives and territories while performing a sentimental patriotic refrain.

Antoni Muntadas La obra de Antoni Muntadas aborda temas sociales, políticos y de comunicación, como la relación entre el espacio público y el privado dentro de determinados marcos sociales, o los canales de información y la forma en que son utilizados para censurar o promulgar ideas. Presenta sus proyectos en distintos medios, como fotografía, vídeo, publicaciones, Internet, instalaciones multimedia e intervenciones en espacios urbanos.

Muntadas ha recibido diversos premios y becas; uno de los galardones más recientes es el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas 2005, otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura español.

Su obra se ha exhibido en diversos museos, entre ellos el MoMA de Nueva York, el Berkeley Art Museum de California, el Musée Contemporain de Montreal, el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid y el Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona.

Cabe destacar su participación en la VI y X ediciones de la Documenta de Kassel (1977, 1997), en la Whitney Biennial of American Art (1991) y en la 51.º Bienal de Venecia (2005), así como en las de São Paulo, Lyon, Taipei, Gwangju y La Habana.

Entre las exposiciones individuales celebradas con posterioridad a On Translation: I Giardini en el Pabellón de España de la última edición de la Bienal de Venecia, se cuentan: Protokolle, Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart; la instalación On Translation: SocialNetworks en la Inter-Society of Electronic Arts de San José, California (2006), proyecto público de dos años de duración; y en 2007 expuso Muntadas/BS. AS., simultáneamente en el Espacio Fundación Telefónica, en el Centro Cultural Recoleta y en el Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires. Antoni Muntadas’ work deals with social, political and mass-media issues, such as the relation between public and private spaces within particular social contexts, and information channels and how they are used to censure or advocate ideas. His projects are presented in a variety of media such as photography, video, publications, the Internet, multimedia installations, and interventions in urban spaces.

Muntadas has received numerous awards and grants, one of his most recent was Spain’s National Visual Arts Prize by the country’s Ministry of Culture in 2005.

His work has been shown in many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Berkeley Art Museum in California, the Musée Contemporain in Montreal, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Museu d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona.

He took part in the 6th and 10th editions of Documenta in Kassel (1977, 1997), in the Whitney Biennial of American Art (1991), in the 51st Venice Biennale (2005), and in the biennales of São Paulo, Lyon, Taipei, Gwangju and Havana.
