Designing Zangrandi came with its challenges. As a heritage building and brand since 1930, preserving its authenticity while adapting to modern needs required careful thought. This project allowed layout adjustments to enhance functionality.
The goal of this project was simple: to make Zangrandi more than just an ice cream shop. It aimed to create a cozy, inviting space where people could gather, reminisce, and create new memories. Every design choice preserved its nostalgic charm, ensuring each visit felt like a journey through time filled with warmth, familiarity, and history.
BANK INDONESIA
LIBRARY
Library / 2024
Location : Wonokromo, Surabaya
Area : ±1.075 m2
Problem
The Bank Indonesia Library in Surabaya, as a heritage building, faces the challenge of accommodating the evolving needs of public spaces. Integrating historical elements with innovation is essential to creating a functional, collaborative, and interactive environment while preserving its historical value.
Solution Concept
Neo-Nostalgic
This concept revives nostalgia within the library, housed in a heritage building, by blending historical elements with modern touches. Nostalgia is brought to life by preserving and transforming the building’s distinctive architectural details, enriched with multisensory design to deepen the spatial experience. The concept also prioritizes functionality and relevance to contemporary public space needs, creating a flexible, collaborative, and user-responsive environment.
Site Analysis
Multisensory Implementation
Highlighting the building’s history and narrative by transforming original elements, while a play of light and shadow accentuates its unique architectural details.
Incorporating stone and wood materials on hallway walls to create a distinctive tactile experience with textures that can be directly felt.
Beyond the scent of old books, coffee-scented diffusers are introduced in the lounge and communal areas, evoking the ambiance of the colonial era.
Historic Adaptation
The building’s history and narrative are reflected through carefully selected materials and patterns.
Existing stained glass windows are thoughtfully repurposed as corner partitions within the library.
The iconic bambu runcing, a symbol of Surabaya, is reinterpreted as a lighting element, creating a striking focal point in the space.
