N’en déplaise à Igor Stravinsky, qui avait un jugement curieusement abrupt à propos de l’œuvre d’Antonio Vivaldi, les sonates pour violoncelle de l’opus 14 du « prêtre roux » sont de splendides pages de musique de chambre, bien davantage construites sur une richesse mélodique, sur des contrastes rythmiques et modaux, que sur la virtuosité démonstrative des concertos bien connus du compositeur vénitien. Aux commandes de ces sonates, l’un des membres les plus remarquables de l’ensemble Gli Incogniti d’Amandine Beyer, Marco Ceccato, qui réalise ici son premier enregistrement pour Zig-Zag Territoires.

Whatever Igor Stravinsky, who was oddly doctrinaire in his views on Vivaldi’s output, might have had to say on the matter, the Cello Sonatas op.14 of the ‘Prete Rosso’ are quite splendid chamber works, built more on rich melody and rhythmic and modal contrasts than on the demonstrative virtuosity of the Venetian composer’s well-known concertos. At the helm of these sonatas is one of the most outstanding members of Amandine Beyer’s ensemble Gli Incogniti, Marco Ceccato, here making his first recording for Zig-Zag Territoires.

SIX SONATES POUR VIOLONCELLE

Si nous pouvons amener une querelle entre vous, nous en aurons un plaisir infini; nous nous glorifierons d’être les instruments de la dissolution d’une alliance aussi hétérogène et d’avoir séparé le doux de l’irascible et le divin du bestial. James Boswell Toute collection est suspecte. Elle sélectionne et assemble des choses autonomes qui, pour quelques points en commun, se retrouvent amalgamées, classées, numérotées, uniformisées. Une collection est étrangère au hasard, elle suit une logique, une nature, elle a donc une raison d’être, un mobile. Bien qu’encore vivant en 1739-40, Vivaldi n’a probablement jamais su qu’à Paris, rue Saint-Honoré pres [sic] l’Oratoire, Le Clerc et Madame Boivin publiaient dans son dos un recueil de six de ses sonates pour violoncelle. Vivaldi avait déjà été piraté à plusieurs reprises, son nom usurpé sans scrupule par l’édition musicale européenne ; le Pastor Fido, par exemple, vendu « de Vivaldy » au comptoir de cette même Madame Boivin, sortait entièrement de la plume de Nicolas de Chédeville, qui jonglait, parfois, avec quelques compositions et mélodies du musicien vénitien. Mais Vivaldi avait alors perdu contact avec le monde éditorial depuis longtemps ; sa réalité musicale avait bien plus à voir avec des exigences de terrain qu’avec le souci de propager sa notoriété dans les milieux dilettantes d’Europe (ce qui était déjà fait). En 1733, il confiait d’ailleurs qu’imprimer sa musique lui empêchait de vendre ses propres manuscrits, ce qui était bien plus rentable. Boivin pensait également en termes de rentabilité quand elle a présenté ces six sonates. En France, le violoncelle savourait finalement son triomphe face à la viole de gambe, grâce notamment aux prestations du violoncelliste Jean Barrière, et devenait l’instrument de salon par excellence. Aussi des compositions sur mesure, de chambre, accessibles techniquement, de l’un des maîtres d’Italie

les plus prisés, était une aubaine. D’ailleurs, le recueil fut réimprimé en 1748, avant d’être piraté à son tour dans d’innombrables collections et écoles pour violoncelle. En vérité, Le Clerc et Boivin publiaient une collection déjà existante. Ils avaient mis la main, à Paris, sur un manuscrit remontant à Vivaldi, rédigé par un copiste actif à Venise entre 1716 et 1726, le Scribe 9 . Vivaldi aura vraisemblablement offert ces six sonates pour violoncelle (RV 47, 41, 43, 45, 40, 46) à un visiteur parisien de passage, ou lié à l’ambassade française de Venise, institution avec laquelle il travaillait régulièrement. Si l’édition Le Clerc/Boivin a indubitablement contribué à la diffusion des sonates pour violoncelle de Vivaldi (bien plus célèbres, jouées et enregistrées que celles pour violon), elle a aussi jeté un voile sur le corpus . D’abord, il faut remarquer qu’elle n’hésite pas à trahir le manuscrit original à plusieurs reprises, en adoucissant plusieurs intervalles augmentés ou diminués, quelques dissonances non préparées ou chromatismes osés, en supprimant parfois certaines variations de motifs, en ajoutant des silences autour des reprises, et en affublant la basse d’une myriade de chiffres peu au fait de la praxis vivaldienne. Par ailleurs, les quatre sonates ne faisant pas partie du recueil, exclues, passent souvent inaperçues. Pour l’une d’entre elles (RV 38) c’est normal, puisque nous n’en connaissons qu’un incipit de deux mesures. Les trois autres sont conservées au Conservatoire de Naples (RV 39 et RV 44, avec la RV 47) et dans la collection privée du Comte de Schönborn, à Wiesentheid (RV 42 et RV 44, avec la RV 46). La présence des sonates à Wiesentheid s’explique facilement par la personne même du Comte Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn (1677-1754), violoncelliste, qui constitua pendant sa vie une extraordinaire collection de musique pour violoncelle, contenant aujourd’hui de nombreux unicum , beaucoup de musique italienne dont neuf compositions vivaldiennes. Il est moins aisé de préciser en revanche l’origine du fond de Naples, mais la ville nourrissait une telle tradition

pour le violoncelle, que la présence de pièces de Vivaldi, musicien alors au sommet de sa renommée, n’est pas vraiment surprenante. Pour plusieurs raisons stylistiques, thématiques et contextuelles, ces sonates ont vraisemblablement été composées vers la moitié des années 1720. Ce tir groupé fait penser à un destinataire précis. S’agirait-il des premiers professeurs de violoncelle à l’Ospedale della Pietà de Venise (Antonio Vandini 1721-1722 et Bernardo Aliprandi 1722-1728/1732 ?), où Vivaldi était lui-même maestro de’ concerti ? Certains musicologues ont toutefois tendance à exclure qu’il s’agisse d’un musicien professionnel, en raison de la relative simplicité technique des sonates. Cet argument manque pourtant de poids car les sonates pour violon de Vivaldi (dont plusieurs ont d’ailleurs servi à élaborer celles pour violoncelle) sont également bien plus abordables que ses concertos, même quand elles sont dédiées à Pisendel, un des virtuoses les plus physiques de l’époque. On connaît par ailleurs des pièces pour dilettante de Vivaldi, dont le compositeur renierait sans aucun doute la paternité, et emploierait immédiatement le feu, s’il apprenait qu’elles ont quitté le pupitre de leur destinataire. Si ces sonates pour violoncelle construisent leur effet virtuose plus sur le moto général, les contrastes rythmiques et modaux, les structures irrégulières, l’aisance gestuelle, la richesse d’articulation que sur la capacité à surmonter d’ardues situations mécaniques, elles font néanmoins appel à une remarquable sensibilité musicale. Vivaldi privilégie avant tout la fluidité du discours, principalement basé sur des danses, afin de caractériser chaque mouvement, de réserver de l’espace à l’interprétation ; ces sonates de maturité montrent combien la basse se réduit au minimum, pour éviter d’interférer avec la déclamation soliste et la réalisation du continuo. Si, à l’instar des sonates de cette période, elles emploient toutes la structure corellienne en quatre mouvements, on peut toutefois les distinguer des homologues pour violon en remarquant plus de chromatisme et un emploi fréquent du saut de corde.

Ce disque propose une sélection de six sonates, choisies parmi le recueil manuscrit de Paris, les fonds de Naples et Wiesentheid. Comme nous souhaitions tout de même inclure Madame Boivin dans cette collection, en rendant hommage à ses éditions peu musicologiques, ses pirates et ses faux, si caractéristiques de l’époque, nous lui dédions ici la reconstruction du prélude de la sonate perdue RV 38. Chédeville y aurait probablement rajouté quelques sifflets, musettes, serpents, vielles à roue, tambours, bourdons, crécelles et autres pétards amusants, puis signé Vivaldy, mais les mobiles du XXIe siècle étant définitivement plus troubles, nous nous sommes cantonnés à une démarche bien moins authentique. SIX CELLO SONATAS

. . . if we can make up a quarrel between you, it will give us infinite pleasure. We shall glory in being the instruments of dissolving so heterogeneous an alliance; of separating the mild from the irascible, and the divine from the bestial. James Boswell Any collection is suspect. It selects and assembles autonomous things that, for the sake of a few points in common, find themselves amalgamated, classified, numbered, standardised. A collection is a stranger to chance; it has a logic, a nature, and thus a raison d’être, a motive. Although he was still alive in 1739-40, Vivaldi probably never knew that in Paris, in the rue Saint-Honoré pres l’Oratoire , Le Clerc and Madame Boivin were publishing a set of six of his cello sonatas behind his back. He had already been pirated several times, his name unscrupulously usurped by the music publishers of Europe; Il Pastor Fido, for example, sold as being ‘de Vivaldy’ over that same Mme Boivin’s shop counter, was entirely a product of the pen of Nicolas de Chédeville, who occasionally fiddled around with compositions and melodies by the Venetian composer. But by that time Vivaldi had long lost all contact with the world of publishing; his reality had a great deal more to do with the demands of music-making ‘on the ground’ than with any concern to spread his fame in the dilettante milieus of Europe (a task he had already achieved, in any case). Indeed, he admitted in 1733 that printing his music actually prevented him from selling his own manuscripts, which was much more profitable. Mme Boivin too was thinking in terms of profitability when she issued these six sonatas. In France, the cello was at last savouring its triumph over the viola da

gamba, thanks notably to the exploits of the cellist Jean Barrière, and was in the process of becoming the salon instrument par excellence. Hence a set of tailor-made compositions for it, on a chamber scale, technically accessible, by one of the most highly esteemed Italian masters, was an absolute windfall. Indeed, the set was reprinted in 1748 before being pirated in its turn by countless collections and methods for the cello. In point of fact, Le Clerc and Boivin issued a collection that was already in existence. They had laid their hands, in Paris, on a manuscript going back to Vivaldi himself, written by a copyist active in Venice between 1716 and 1726 and known as ‘Scribe 9’. Vivaldi very likely gave these six cello sonatas (RV 47, 41, 43, 45, 40, 46) to a Parisian visitor who was passing through Venice or was connected to the French embassy in the city, an institution with which he worked regularly. Though the Le Clerc/Boivin edition undoubtedly contributed to the diffusion of Vivaldi’s cello sonatas (which are nowadays much better known and more frequently performed and recorded than those for violin), it has also cast a long shadow over the corpus. In the first place, it must be pointed out that this edition does not hesitate to betray the original manuscript in several places, by smoothing out a number of augmented or diminished intervals, unprepared dissonances, and bold chromaticisms, sometimes omitting variations of motifs, adding rest signs around the repeats, and equipping the bass with a myriad of figures that have little in common with Vivaldian praxis. What is more, the four ‘excluded’ sonatas that are not featured in this collection often go unnoticed. For one of them (RV 38) this is only to be expected, since all we have of it is a two-bar incipit. The other three are held in the Naples Conservatory (RV 39 and RV 44, along with RV 47) and in the private collection of Count von Schönborn at Wiesentheid (RV 42 and RV44, along with RV 46). The presence of the sonatas in Wiesentheid may easily be explained by the personality of Count Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn (1677-1754) himself, a cellist

who built up in the course of his life an extraordinary collection of music for his instrument, including many unica, which contains a large number of Italian compositions, among them nine by Vivaldi. Although it is a less straightforward matter to identify the precise origins of the Naples collection, the city had such a strong tradition of cello playing that the presence of pieces by Vivaldi, then at the height of his fame, is hardly surprising. For several reasons – stylistic, thematic, and contextual – these sonatas can probably be dated to the mid-1720s. This concentration in time suggests they must have been intended for a specific player. Could this have been one or both of the first cello teachers at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice (Antonio Vandini, 1721-22, and Bernardo Aliprandi 1722-28/32?), where Vivaldi himself was maestro de’ concerti ? Certain musicologists, however, tend to discount the hypothesis that they were written for a professional musician, given the relative technical simplicity of the sonatas. But this argument lacks weight, since Vivaldi’s violin sonatas (several of which in fact served as a basis for the cello pieces) are also much more playable than his concertos, even when they are dedicated to Pisendel, one of the most physical virtuosos of the period. Moreover, we know pieces for dilettante by Vivaldi which the composer would undoubtedly have disowned and immediately consigned to the flames if he had learnt that they had strayed from the music stands of their intended recipients. Although these cello sonatas derive their virtuoso effect more from their overall moto, their contrasts of rhythm and mode, their irregular structures, their fluency of gesture, their richness of articulation, than from the player’s ability to overcome treacherous mechanical pitfalls, they nonetheless call for remarkable musical sensibility. Vivaldi gives pride of place to the fluidity of the discourse, principally based on dance metres, in order to characterise each movement, to leave the performers room to manoeuvre; these mature sonatas demonstrate how the bass is now reduced to the minimum so as not to interfere with the solo declamation and

the realisation of the continuo. If, like the other sonatas of this period, theyall employ the Corellian structure in four movements, one may nevertheless distinguish them from their counterparts for violin by observing that they feature greater chromaticism and frequent use of string crossing. This disc presents a selection of six sonatas, chosen from among the Paris manuscript set and the Naples and Wiesentheid collections. Since we still wished to include Mme Boivin in this recital, in order to pay tribute to her decidedly unmusicological editions, her pirates, and her forgeries, so characteristic of the period, we would like to dedicate the reconstruction of the prelude to the lost sonata RV38 to her. Chédeville would probably have added a few whistles, musettes, serpents, hurdy-gurdies, drums, drones, ratchets, and other ‘amusing’ sources of noise, then signed the whole thing Vivaldy, but since the motives of the twentyfirst century are distinctly murkier, we have restricted ourselves to a much less authentic approach.
