Transcrire était tout autant le moyen, pour Franz Liszt, de célébrer le génie de Beethoven que de méditer sur son œuvre. C’était également une manière de susciter une confrontation quasi titanesque entre les moyens du pianiste et de son instrument, et l’immensité des possibilités de l’orchestre. La puissance de la pensée de l’interprète, sa compréhension de l’essence de l’œuvre, deviennent alors l’enjeu crucial de la démarche, de l’aventure proposée à l’auditeur. Pour le troisième volume de son intégrale des symphonies de Beethoven transcrites par Franz Liszt, Yury Martynov a choisi un piano de 1867 réalisé par Blüthner, dont Liszt appréciait particulièrement les instruments.
Transcription, for Franz Liszt, was in equal measure a means of celebrating the genius of Beethoven and of meditating on his works. It was also a way of provoking a well-nigh titanic confrontation between the resources of the pianist and his instrument and the immense potential of the orchestra. Thus the power of the interpreter’s conception, his understanding of the essence of the work, become the crucial factor in Liszt’s approach and in the adventure offered to the listener. For the third volume of his complete set of Liszt’s transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, Yury Martynov has chosen a piano of 1867 made by Blüthner, whose instruments were much admired by Liszt.

Le nom de Beethoven est un nom consacré dans l’art. Ses Symphonies sont universellement reconnues aujourd’hui comme des chefs-d’œuvre. Elles ne sauraient être trop méditées, trop étudiées par tous ceux qui ont un désir sérieux de savoir ou de reproduire. Toutes les façons de les répandre et de les populariser ont en conséquence leur degré d’utilité, et les arrangements pour Piano, faits en assez grand nombre jusqu’ici de ces symphonies, ne sont pas dépourvus d’un certain avantage, bien que considérés intrinsèquement ils soient pour la plupart de médiocre valeur. La plus mauvaise lithographie, la traduction la plus incorrecte donne encore une idée vague du génie des Michel-Ange et des Shakespeare. Dans la plus incomplète réduction on retrouve de loin en loin les traces demi-effacées de l’inspiration des maîtres. Mais l’extension acquise par le Piano en ces derniers temps, par suite des progrès de l’exécution et des perfectionnements apportés dans le mécanisme, permettent de faire plus et mieux que ce qui a été fait jusqu’à cette heure. Par le développement indéfini de sa puissance harmonique, le Piano tend de plus en plus à s’assimiler toutes les compositions orchestrales. Dans l’espace de ses sept octaves, il peut produire, à peu d’exceptions près, tous les traits, toutes les combinaisons, toutes les figures de la composition la plus savante, et ne laisse à l’orchestre d’autres supériorités (immenses il est vrai) que celles de la diversité des timbres et des effets de masse. Tel a été mon but dans le travail que je publie aujourd’hui. J’eusse estimé, je l’avoue, comme un assez inutile emploi de mes heures la publication d’une vingtième variante des Symphonies dans la manière usitée jusqu’ici, mais je les regarderai comme bien remplies si j’ai réussi à transporter sur le Piano, non seulement les grandes lignes de la Composition de Beethoven, mais encore cette multitude de détails et d’accessoires qui concourent si puissamment à la perfection de l’ensemble. Je serai satisfait si j’ai accompli la tâche du graveur intelligent, du traducteur consciencieux qui saisissent l’esprit d’une œuvre avec la lettre, et contribuent ainsi à propager la connaissance des maîtres et les [sic] sentiment du beau. Ce très beau texte est la préface proposée par Liszt en introduction à l’édition de ses transcriptions des Symphonies de Beethoven en 1865 chez Breitkopf & Härtel. En terminant, en 1863-1864, sa transcription de l’ensemble des neuf Symphonies, Liszt renoue avec un projet ancien. C’est en effet, beaucoup plus tôt, dès les années 1835-37, que Liszt songe à transcrire pour piano les Symphonies de Beethoven, cela dans l’esprit de sa magistrale transcription de la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz en 1833. En 1837, il effectue une première transcription de la Ve symphonie et de la Symphonie pastorale (Symphonie n° 6). Un an après, en 1838, il s’attaque à la VIIe Symphonie. Ces trois symphonies sont publiées en 1840 et dédicacées à Ingres, souvenir des moments où Liszt, à Rome, en 1839, jouait les sonates de Beethoven pour violon et piano avec le grand peintre alors directeur de la Villa Médicis et connu aussi pour son violon. Autour de 1840, il se livre à un important travail de transcription d’autres œuvres de Beethoven : Adélaïde (1839-1841), les six Gellert-Lieder op. 48 (1840), et le Grand Septuor de L. van Beethoven op. 20. Un peu plus tard, en 1849, alors qu’il vient de s’installer à Weimar, Liszt transcrit encore un certain nombre de lieder dont le fameux cycle cycle An die ferne Geliebte op. 98. Ce n’est que beaucoup plus tard, près de vingt-cinq ans après ses transcriptions des Symphonies V-VI et VII, qu’il reprend, en 1863-1864, alors qu’il est à Rome, son travail laissé inachevé en 1841. Il transcrit alors les symphonies manquantes (n° 1-2-4-8-9), reprend et achève la Symphonie Héroïque (Symphonie n° 3) dont il n’avait transcrit en 1841 et édité peu après que la « Marche funèbre » et révise entièrement, pour ne pas dire plus, les trois Symphonies transcrites en 1837-1838 (n° 5-6-7 donc). Il dédie l’ensemble à son gendre, élève et disciple Hans von Bülow. Les arrangements pour piano des Symphonies de Beethoven sont des transcriptions. C’est le type de réécriture le plus fidèle au texte selon une logique que l’on pourrait résumer sous la forme : ne rien ajouter et enlever le moins possible. C’est ce qui différencie la transcription de la paraphrase, beaucoup plus libre,

où Liszt garde l’essentiel du texte d’origine, notamment sa structure, mais se permet un certain nombre d’excursus et d’embellissements ornementaux, virtuoses. Enfin, à côté des transcriptions et des paraphrases, très nombreuses, Liszt compose des fantaisies, essentiellement, sur des thèmes d’opéras, qui elles sont proches du pot-pourri et sont des grandes formes. Liszt recompose une dramaturgie pianistique, et virtuose, à partir de différents fragments qu’il met en forme selon un schéma, la forme-fantaisie, qui servira d’ailleurs plus ou moins de laboratoire formel aux grandes œuvres telles que la Sonate en si, Après une lecture du Dante ou encore les Poèmes symphoniques. « En fait de lecture – je n’ai rien lu. Mais en revanche, j’ai transcrit la marche funèbre de la Symphonie héroïque que j’enverrai à Mechetti pour son Album Beethowen [...] » écrit Liszt à la comtesse d’Agoult dans une lettre datée du 13 novembre 1841. Cette transcription est isolée. Elle a pour toile de fond une tournée de concert de Liszt en Allemagne commencée durant l’été 1841 et qui culminera avec les pharamineux succès de Berlin du début de l’année 1842. Cette tournée est une des plus importantes de la période virtuose (1839-1847) de Liszt que l’on appelle aussi Glanzperiode et qui le voit sillonner l’Europe. Les lauriers récoltés à Berlin vont en effet amplifier et stabiliser l’européanisation de la figure de Liszt. Ensuite, c’est aussi lors de cette tournée, entre le 25 et le 30 novembre, que, pour la première fois, le grand virtuose séjourne à Weimar. On connait la suite. Après la période italienne des Années de pèlerinage (1837-38), le retour en Hongrie fin 1839, Liszt commence à structurer progressivement à partir des années 1840-41 ce qui sera ni plus ni moins le troisième pôle de la deuxième partie de sa vie : l’Allemagne. La Lettre d’un bachelier « à M. Léon Kreutzer » et le magnifique lied Die Lorelei datent de cette époque. Enfin, l’allusion à l’Album Beethoven de Mecchetti dans la lettre que nous venons de citer nous renvoie vers une des causes les plus chères de Liszt : la célébration récurrente et en

même temps médiatisée, militante, du génie beethovenien dont le point d’aboutissement sera le Festival Beethoven d’août 1845. Il est probable que cette transcription isolée ait aussi des origines plus circonstancielles. Le 7 juillet, lors du Norddeutsches Musikfest de Hambourg, Liszt joue la partie de piano de la Fantaisie pour choeur, piano et orchestre lors d’un concert où était interprétée, en première partie, justement, la Symphonie Héroïque. Quelques jours après, le 15 juillet, à Copenhague, à la Cour et en présence du Roi Christian VIII, il joue sa transcription de la Symphonie pastorale et la Sonate à Kreutzer. Ajoutons enfin l’hypothèse d’une note plus sombre, plus intime. Liszt compose en effet cette transcription dans les jours qui suivent l’adieu de Düsseldorf (3 novembre), après, donc, le séjour de Nonnenwerth d’août 1841 où apparaissent entre lui et la comtesse d’Agoult des mots lourds tels que « rupture », « ajournement », des phrases telles que « je vous serai meilleure comme amie que comme amante » (Lettre de la comtesse d’Agoult du 10 août 1841). Sans aller jusqu’à affirmer que le funèbre est la conséquence de la rencontre entre un contexte affectif troublé et un contexte de carrière nettement germanique, il est possible au moins d’en formuler l’hypothèse. Cette transcription restera sans lendemains. Plus exactement, il faudra attendre 1863 pour que Liszt transcrive les autres mouvements en même temps qu’il achèvera l’ensemble du cycle. Sur un plan musical, cette transcription de la « Marche funèbre » de la Symphonie héroïque met en évidence un certain nombre d’éléments qui d’ailleurs ne sont pas propres à ce mouvement et sont peu ou prou valables pour l’ensemble des 8 symphonies, la IXe posant un certain nombre de problèmes spécifiques. Liszt, comme toujours, reste extrêmement fidèle au texte et restitue admirablement le climat poétique et dramatique de l’original beethovenien. La grandeur, le caractère tour à tour sombre, lugubre, des parties extrêmes puis plus serein de la partie centrale gardent pratiquement la même force d’évocation, le même impact émotionnel, la même densité, la même plénitude mais aussi les mêmes équilibres

que dans la version orchestrale. Tout ceci est en définitive assez mystérieux et nous conduit à questionner les connivences subtiles qui unissent le piano et l’orchestre romantique. On a souvent tendance lorsqu’il est question des arrangements lisztiens à mettre l’accent sur les différences entre le piano et l’orchestre ou entre le piano et l’opéra avec comme conséquence logique une sorte de grandissement épique du génie lisztien. Liszt est le seul à pouvoir restituer au piano sans perte, sans altération, le génie de Berlioz ou de Beethoven mais la performance lisztienne ne doit pas nous conduire à sous-estimer les convergences profondes qui existent au XIXe siècle entre le piano, l’orchestre, l’opéra et le lied romantique. S’il a été possible pour Liszt de passer si facilement de l’orchestre vers le piano, et du piano vers l’orchestre d’ailleurs, c’est parce que se trouvaient, aussi bien du côté du piano que de l’orchestre les conditions de possibilités pratiques, matérielles (facture), idiomatiques (écriture), permettant aux deux médiums sonores d’accompagner conjointement le renouvellement du cahier des charges expressif propre au romantisme. Le génie de Liszt est d’avoir su voir et d’avoir eu les moyens de révéler cette transversalité profonde unissant le piano et l’orchestre de son temps mais il n’a pu le faire que parce que sa technique prodigieuse et sa totale liberté d’esprit le libéraient de toute formule conventionnelle imposée. Aucune limite technique, en dehors des possibilités strictement physiques de la main, aucune formule conventionnelle imposée ne vient s’interposer chez lui entre le texte de Beethoven et sa réécriture pianistique avec comme conséquence une exceptionnelle fidélité au texte beethovénien, là où d’autres, plus limités que lui, auraient été conduits à altérer le texte original. Aucun obstacle ne vient parasiter l’acte créateur de Liszt quand il s’agit de restituer les oppositions de plans sonores et les résonances sombres dans le grave et l’extrême grave, presque de l’ordre du bruit, de la première section de cette « Marche funèbre », unifier au contraire dans un même continuum mélodico-résonnant ceux la partie centrale, de timbrer et de registrer le fugato de la troisième partie, dilater ensuite la masse sonore pour mieux la raréfier dans cette même troisième partie. Liszt met admirablement en valeur la relation

entre le timbre et les lignes de force de l’écriture. Ainsi, aux mesures 8 et suivantes, il enlève le remplissage des vents pour mieux concentrer le rapport dialectique entre la mélodie, au soprano, et l’énergie rythmique de l’accompagnement pour avec à propos faire apparaître ce même remplissage simplement pour souligner la zone cadentielle de la fin de la phrase. Beaucoup plus loin, dans la partie centrale, à la mesure 75 exactement, il simplifie les deux dessins complémentaires de hautbois et de flûte pour rendre plus perceptible la continuité logique de la ligne mélodique. Fidèle à son habitude, prise dès la transcription de la Symphonie fantastique, Liszt prend soin de noter sur la partition, quand il le juge important donc sans systématisme, les détails d’instrumentation. Mesure 1, il indique la mélodie principale au violon, mesure 8 au hautbois et ainsi de suite. Ces mentions ont plusieurs fonctions. Elles sont une marque de respect vis-à-vis du texte original et des intentions de Beethoven. Elles indiquent au pianiste des sonorités à imiter, éventuellement, quand c’est possible, en suggérant au moins un esprit si la lettre est difficile à restituer, bien évidemment. Pourtant, là encore, une trop grande focalisation sur le timbre et le passage de l’orchestre vers le piano peut conduire à occulter certaines réalités. Une question simple : est-ce que Liszt, transcripteur, dans son atelier, voit ou est-ce qu’il entend ? Ou plutôt est-ce qu’en définitive il n’entend pas plutôt imaginairement à partir de ce qu’il voit ? En d’autres termes part-il réellement de la matérialité concrète du son de l’orchestre ou de l’abstraction de la partition ? Pour des raisons qui tiennent aux conditions pratiques d’exécution musicale au XIXe siècle avant l’enregistrement moderne, Liszt a certainement peu entendu concrètement la « Marche funèbre » de la Symphonie héroïque , tout comme l’ensemble des Symphonies de Beethoven d’ailleurs, ce qui veut dire que les possibilités de contrôle timbrique du rendu pianistique de ses transcriptions sont minorées par rapport aux informations qu’il puise dans sa lecture de la partition d’orchestre. Sans doute reconstitue-t-il imaginairement le son de l’orchestre à partir de ce qu’il lit à la table ou bien

lorsqu’il réduit à vue la partition d’orchestre dans une sorte d’improvisation bricolée. Dans les deux cas, il ne s’agit que d’une reconstitution. Si l’on considère que la partition est un passage à l’abstraction par la graphie, rien n’interdit de penser que Liszt se montre en définitive plus sensible aux lignes de force de l’écriture, certes soulignées par les différents choix de timbre et d’orchestration mais qui apparaissent aussi abstraitement par la seule graphie de la partition, que par la matérialité du timbre lui-même – surtout qu’en 1841 il n’a pas encore l’expérience de la direction des années passées à Weimar. Sans vouloir sousestimer les révolutions sonores de l’orchestre beethovénien, il est probable que, malgré les indications d’instrumentations de Liszt, le rapport, sans doute plus abstrait que concret, que Liszt entretient dans son atelier avec l’orchestre beethovenien et le caractère monocolore de la transcription pour piano, nous conduise à réévaluer, en amont, chez Beethoven, le rapport entre ce qui est proprement timbrique et ce qui relève du soulignement, par l’instrumentation, des lignes de force de l’écriture. Liszt, d’une certaine manière, par son travail de transcripteur, nous met sur le chemin du déchiffrement des priorités beethovéniennes. Les trois autres mouvements ont été transcrits en 1863-65 tout comme la Huitième symphonie qui complète cet enregistrement. Plus de vingt ans vont s’écouler entre la transcription de la « Marche funèbre » de la Symphonie héroïque et le reste de la Troisième symphonie. La Symphonie héroïque (1804) et la Huitième symphonie (1812) ont pour caractéristique d’être aux deux extrêmes d’une partie particulièrement dense de la vie de Beethoven bornée par, d’un côté, le Testament d’Heiligenstadt (1802), l’élan créateur de la Deuxième symphonie, des Sonates op. 31, de la Sonate à Kreutzer, de la Waldstein et de l’Appassionata et de l’autre par les Lettres à l’Immortelle bien aimée, la maladie, la rencontre assez désastreuse avec Goethe. Après la Huitième symphonie, Beethoven entre dans une période de stérilité relativement importante qui durera jusqu’en 1815, année des deux Sonates pour violoncelle et piano op. 102. D’une certaine manière, le Liszt de

1863 donne de la Symphonie héroïque une version presque apaisée, comme monumentalisée. C’est aussi un Liszt qui a maintenant la solide expérience de la direction d’orchestre et de la composition symphonique acquise à Weimar. Nul effet inutile ou tapageur. Nul héroïsme grandiloquent. Le texte juste le texte, l’essence du texte. Il est possible aussi que cette sérénité se ressente du climat particulièrement contemplatif du couvent du Monte Mario, à Rome, où Liszt réside à ce moment là. Comme chacun sait, la Symphonie héroïque est en quatre mouvements : un « Allegro con brio » de forme allegro de sonate, la « Marcia funebre », adagio assai, évoquée plus haut, un « Scherzo », allegro vivace, et un « Finale », allegro molto. Liszt propose une lecture qui, par sa sobriété, n’est pas véritablement héroïque. En fuyant l’anecdote, il tend à se rapprocher de la pensée pure et rejoint plutôt l’interprétation de Berlioz qui, dans son Etude critique des Symphonies de Beethoven, écrit : « on a grand tort de tronquer l’inscription placée en tête de celle-ci par le compositeur. Elle est intitulée Symphonie héroïque pour fêter le souvenir d’un grand homme. On voit qu’il ne s’agit point ici de batailles ou de marches triomphales, ainsi que beaucoup de gens, trompés par la mutilation du titre, doivent s’y attendre, mais bien de penser graves et profonds, de mélancoliques souvenirs, de cérémonies imposantes par leur grandeur et leur tristesse, en un mot, de l’oraison funèbre d’un héros. Je connais peu d’exemples en musique d’un style où la douleur ait su conserver constamment des formes aussi pures. » La Huitième symphonie n’est sans doute pas la plus célèbre des neuf. Composée dans la proximité de la septième, elle a été longtemps plus en retrait. Elle n’en est pas moins tissée d’originalités. Dans la tonalité de fa majeur, elle se compose de quatre mouvements : un « Allegro vivace e con brio », un « Allegretto scherzando », extrêmement humoristique et piquant, un « Tempo di Menuetto » et un « Allegro vivace ». L’œuvre ne comporte pas véritablement de mouvement lent et Beethoven, contrairement à son habitude, ne compose pas un scherzo mais un menuet. C’est l’« Allegretto scherzando », écrit à la place du mouvement lent, qui prend en charge la dimension primesautière, sèche, rythmique, du

scherzo habituel. Cette transcription du Liszt de la maturité montre le grand virtuose en pleine possession de ses moyens. Le premier mouvement nous fait entendre un piano ample qui trouve, sans abus des effets d’orchestres au piano, de type trémolos ou octaves, accords ou octaves répétés, batteries plus ou moins compliquées, le juste équivalent du discours beethovenien. Bien sûr, Liszt utilise les trémolos et les octaves, à dire vrai il n’a guère le choix, en raison de la densité et de la continuité résonante du discours beethovenien, mais tous ces procédés qui pourraient basculer dans l’effet facile sont étroitement contrôlés par la logique mélodique ou rythmique du discours beethovenien dont la juste expression est la priorité de Liszt. Les difficultés propres au deuxième mouvement sont négociées très subtilement. La principale difficulté est de rendre sans surcharge le mélange de prolifération d’événements et de sécheresse quasi mécanique qui caractérise le discours en pointe sèche de cet « allegretto scherzando », presque rossinien. Liszt dose en permanence la relation de complémentarité/compensation entre le staccato et les doublures en même temps qu’une habile répartition entre les deux mains lui permet de respecter les contrastes et les oppositions de plans sonores. Le « Tempo di minuetto » est sous les doigts de Liszt presque schumannien. L’« Allegro vivace » final est saturé de défis notamment en raison de l’extrême vivacité de ses notes répétées. Ces répétitions rapides sont un risque en soi : celui de l’alourdissement-ralentissement. Liszt invente très librement une formule à base de trémolos qui lui permet de contourner la difficulté et ainsi de laisser au discours beethovenien toute sa concentration et toute son énergie.

L’instrument, en fort mauvais état lorsque nous l’avons trouvé, a été restauré par nos soins en 2012/2013. Parce que j’aime particulièrement les pianos Blüthner et que leurs premiers instruments de concert sont aujourd’hui très rares, nous avons relevé le défi d’entreprendre la restauration. Au bout de trois cents heures de travail, il n’était plus question de s’arrêter en si bon chemin: il nous a donc fallu plus d’un millier d’heures pour mener notre tâche à son terme. Les grands facteurs de pianos, Bechstein, Steinway et Blüthner, ont tous fondé leur propre entreprise en 1853. Franz Liszt, dans ses dernières années, les a beaucoup fréquentés et Alexander Siloti, son élève favori, a donné son premier concert à la salle Blüthner. YURY MARTYNOV Après des études à l’Ecole Centrale de Musique du Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou, Yury Martynov poursuit sa formation au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Moscou où il étudie le piano et l’orgue avec des professeurs de renom tels M.S Voskresenskiy ou encore A.A Parshin.

En 1993-1994, il suit des cours de clavecin et de basso continuo en France avec le professeur Wjuniski, des cours au Conservatoire “Jean-Wiener” à Bobigny, et au Conservatoire “C. Debussy “à Paris, dont il est diplômé avec deux médailles d’or. A partir de 1989, Martynov donne de nombreux concerts en proposant les meilleurs programmes en tant que soliste et membre de l’ensemble de chambre dans de prestigieuses salles de concert à Moscou (le Théâtre Bolchoï, le Théâtre Maly, la Salle Rachmaninov, la Maison Internationale de la Musique), à SaintPétersbourg (la Petite Salle de la Philharmonie, la Salle National Capella entre autres), ainsi que dans d’autres villes en Russie. Il s’est également produit dans de nombreux pays d’Europe (aux Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam et de Bruges, à la Salle Cortot à Paris, ou encore au Mozarteum de Salzbourg) ainsi qu’au Japon (notamment au Masashino-hall) ,Turquie et Etats-Unis. Martynov a participé à de nombreux festivals et manifestations musicales en Russie et à l’étranger, comme les “Soirées S. The name of Beethoven is a hallowed one in the realm of art. His symphonies are universally acknowledged today as masterpieces. They cannot be meditated enough, studied enough by all those who have a serious desire for knowledge or wish to create. Consequently, all methods of disseminating and popularising them have their degree of usefulness, and the piano arrangements of these symphonies, of which a fairly large number has already been made, are not without a certain merit, even though, considered for their intrinsic worth, they are for the most part of mediocre quality. The poorest lithograph, the faultiest translation can still give a vague idea of the genius of the Michelangelos and the Shakespeares. In the most incomplete piano reduction, one may find here and there half-erased traces of the inspiration of the masters. But the recent progress made by the piano as a result of advances in execution and improvements to the action makes it possible to do more and better than has been achieved until now. Thanks to the untold development of its harmonic power, the piano tends increasingly to assimilate all the orchestral repertoire. In the compass of its seven octaves, it can produce, with only a few exceptions, all the characteristics, all the combinations, all the most learned compositional figures, and leaves the orchestra no other advantages than those (admittedly immense) of diversity of timbre and massed effects. Such has been my aim in the work I publish today. I confess I would have regarded it as a somewhat futile use of my time to publish a twentieth variant on the symphonies in the manner that has hitherto been practised, but I will consider that time well spent if I have succeeded in carrying over to the piano not only the general outlines of Beethoven’s compositions, but also the multitude of details and accessory features which contribute so powerfully to the perfection of the whole. I will be satisfied if I have accomplished the task of the intelligent engraver, the conscientious translator, who grasp the spirit of a work along with the letter, and thereby help to propagate knowledge of the masters and the appreciation of the beautiful. This fine text is the preface provided by Liszt as an introduction to the edition of his transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies published in 1865 by Breitkopf & Härtel. When he completed his transcription of all nine symphonies in 1863-64, Liszt was returning to an old project. For it was many years earlier, in 1835-37, that he had first thought of transcribing the Beethoven symphonies for piano, in the spirit of his masterly 1833 version of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. In 1837 he made an initial arrangement of the Fifth Symphony and the Pastoral (no.6). A year later, in 1838, he tackled the Seventh. These three symphonies were published in 1840 and dedicated to Ingres, in fond recollection of the days in Rome in 1839 when Liszt played the Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with the great painter, at that time director of the Villa Medici, who was also known as an amateur violinist. In the years around 1840, he made a substantial number of transcriptions of other Beethoven works: Adelaide (1839-41), the six Gellert-Lieder op.48 (1840), and the Grand Septuor de L. van Beethoven (the Septet op.20). Some years later, in 1849, shortly after his move to Weimar, Liszt transcribed some more lieder, including the famous song cycle An die ferne Geliebte op.98. It was only much later again, nearly twenty-five years after his transcriptions of Symphonies nos.5-7 – when he was in Rome, in 1863-64 – that he resumed the task left unfinished in 1841. Now he transcribed the missing symphonies (nos.1, 2, 4, 8-9), took up again and completed the Eroica Symphony (no.3), of which he had previously transcribed and published only the Marcia funebre, and thoroughly revised, to say the least, the three symphonies transcribed in 1837-38 (nos.5-7). He dedicated the set to his pupil and disciple Hans von Bülow. These piano arrangements of the Beethoven symphonies are transcriptions. This is the type of rewriting that is most faithful to the text, following the principle of adding nothing and removing as little as possible. It is this that distinguishes the transcription from the much freer paraphrase, in which Liszt retains the essential features of the original text, notably its structure, but allows himself a certain

number of excursus and virtuosic ornamental embellishments. Finally, alongside his large number of transcriptions and paraphrases, Liszt wrote large-scale fantasias, essentially on operatic themes, which are close to the potpourri principle. In these he recomposes a pianistic, and virtuoso, dramaturgy from a variety of fragments which he structures with the aid of ‘fantasia form’, a scheme that was also to serve more or less as a formal laboratory for such major works as the B minor Sonata, Après une lecture du Dante, and the symphonic poems. ‘As far as reading is concerned – I have read nothing at all. On the other hand, though, I have transcribed the funeral march of the Eroica Symphony, which I will send to Mechetti for his Beethoven Album’: so wrote Liszt to the Comtesse d’Agoult in a letter dated 13 November 1841. This transcription is an isolated one. It was made against the backdrop of a concert tour of Liszt in Germany that began in the summer of 1841 and culminated in his sensational success in Berlin early in 1842. The tour was one of the most important of Liszt’s virtuoso years (1839-47), also known as the Glanzperiode, during which he travelled the length and breadth of Europe. The praise he won in Berlin had the result of amplifying and stabilising his reputation all over the continent. It was also on this tour, from 25 to 30 November, that the great virtuoso first spent some time in Weimar. What happened next is well known. After the Italian period of the Années de pèlerinage (1837-38) and the return to Hungary at the end of 1839, Liszt gradually began to construct, from 1840-41 onwards, what was to become no less than the third pole of the second part of his life: Germany. The Lettre d’un bachelier ‘à M. Léon Kreutzer’ and the magnificent lied Die Lorelei date from this period. And finally, the allusion to ‘Mecchetti’s Beethoven Album’ in the letter quoted above refers us to one of the causes closest to Liszt’s heart: the celebration – recurrent and at the same time mediatised, militant – of the genius of Beethoven, which reached its peak with the Beethoven Festival of August 1845. It is likely that this isolated transcription also had more circumstantial origins. On 7 July 1841, at the

Norddeutsches Musikfest in Hamburg, Liszt played the piano part of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia in a concert that had featured the Eroica Symphony in its first half. A few days later, on 15 July, in Copenhagen, he played his transcriptions of the Pastoral Symphony and the ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata at court in the presence of King Christian VIII. Finally, let us add a hypothesis on a darker, more intimate note. Liszt made this transcription in the days following the farewell at Düsseldorf (3 November), that is to say, after his stay in Nonnenwerth in August 1841, where highly charged words such as ‘separation’ and ‘deferment’ were exchanged between him and the Comtesse d’Agoult, phrases like ‘I will be better for you as a friend [amie] than as a lover [amante]’ (letter of Marie d’Agoult dated 10 August 1841). Without going so far as to assert that Liszt turned to the Marcia funebre as a result of the conjunction of an agitated affective context and a markedly Germanic phase in his career, one may at least put forward the hypothesis. This transcription had no immediate successors. Or, to be more precise, it was not until 1863 that Liszt transcribed the other movements of the symphony, at the same time as he completed the entire cycle. In musical terms, the transcription of the Marcia funebre of the Eroica Symphony highlights several elements which, moreover, are not restricted to this movement and are more or less valid for the whole corpus of the eight symphonies (the Ninth poses a certain number of problems all its own). Liszt, as always, remains extremely faithful to the text and admirably conveys the poetic and dramatic atmosphere of Beethoven’s original. The grandeur and the character of the successive sections – sombre and gloomy in the outer sections, then more serene in the central section – retain practically the same evocative power, the same emotional impact, the same density, the same plenitude, and even the same balances as in the orchestral version. All of this is, in the end, somewhat mysterious, and prompts us to examine the subtle complicities that link the piano and the Romantic orchestra. There is often a tendency, in discussions of Liszt’s

arrangements, to emphasise the differences between piano and orchestra or piano and opera, an approach that logically leads to an epic glorification of his genius. Liszt is the only composer who was capable of recreating the genius of Berlioz or Beethoven on the piano without loss or alteration, but this feat must not make us underestimate the deep-seated convergences that existed in the nineteenth century between the piano, the orchestra, opera, and the Romantic lied. If it was possible for Liszt to move so easily from the orchestra to the piano, and indeed from the piano to the orchestra, it is because both media offered the practical, material (the craft of instrument making) and idiomatic (compositional technique) conditions that permitted them conjointly to accompany the renewal of the expressive template specific to Romanticism. It was Liszt’s genius to have grasped, and to have possessed the resources needed to reveal, the far-reaching transversality that linked the piano and the orchestra of his time; but he was only able to do so because his prodigious technique and total independence of thought freed him from all the formulas imposed by convention. No technical limitation, aside from the strictly physical possibilities of the hand, no set conventional formula came between Beethoven’s text and its transposition into pianistic terms. The consequence of this was exceptional fidelity to the original text, where others, more limited than Liszt, would have been obliged to alter it. No obstacle impedes Liszt’s creative process when it is necessary to reproduce the contrasts of sonic perspective and the sombre resonances in the low and bottom registers, almost noise-like in quality, of the first section of the Marcia funebre; to combine those of the central section, on the contrary, into a single continuum of melody and resonance; to distribute timbre and register in the fugato of the third part, and then to dilate the sonic mass, the better to rarefy it, in that same part of the work. Liszt admirably brings out the relationship between timbre and the principal contours of the composition. For instance, in bars 8 ff., he removes the harmonic filling of the wind parts in order to concentrate on the dialectical relationship between the melody, in the treble, and the rhythmic

energy of the accompaniment, subsequently bringing in those filler parts at the appropriate moment simply to emphasise the cadential zone at the end of the phrase. Much later, in the central section, at bar 75, he simplifies the two complementary motifs on oboe and flute with a view to making the logical continuity of the melodic line more perceptible. True to the habit he adopted from the transcription of the Symphonie fantastique onwards, Liszt is careful to mark the details of the instrumentation on the score when he deems it important, but does not do so systematically. In bar 1 he indicates the principal melody in the violin, in bar 8 in the oboe, and so forth. These notations have several functions. They are a mark of respect for the original text and for Beethoven’s intentions. They indicate to pianists the sonorities they may attempt to imitate, where possible, by suggesting at least a spirit even if the letter is, obviously, difficult to recreate. Yet, here too, excessive focalisation on timbre and the transfer from the orchestra to the piano may lead us to mask certain realities. A simple question: when Liszt was working on the transcription in his studio, did he see or did he hear? Or rather, is it not the case that he heard in his imagination on the basis of what he saw? In other words, was his starting point really the concrete, material sound of the orchestra, or the abstraction of the score? For reasons to do with the practical conditions of musical performance in the nineteenth century, before the advent of modern recording, Liszt certainly had few opportunities actually to hear the Marcia funebre of the Eroica , or indeed the other Beethoven symphonies. This meant that the possibilities of verifying the timbre in the pianistic rendering of his transcriptions were of less significance than the information he drew from his reading of the orchestral score. He probably recreated the sound of the orchestra in his imagination from what he read at his desk or else when he reduced the orchestral score at sight in a sort of makeshift improvisation. In either case, we are dealing only with a reconstruction. If one considers that the score is a passage to abstraction through written

representation, there is nothing to prevent us from thinking that Liszt showed himself to be, at bottom, more attentive to the main lines of the compositional concept – emphasised, to be sure, by choices of timbre and orchestration, but which also appear abstractly in the mere representation of the notes in the score – than to the materiality of timbre itself. This view is supported by the fact that, in 1841, he had not yet benefited from the conducting experience he was to acquire in his Weimar years. Without wishing to underestimate the sonic revolutions of Beethoven’s orchestration, it is likely that, despite Liszt’s indications of instrumentation, the (probably more abstract than concrete) relationship he had in his studio with Beethoven’s orchestration, coupled with the monochrome character of the piano transcription, should lead us to reassess, in Beethoven’s original work, the relationship between what is strictly timbral and what comes into the category of bringing out, by means of instrumentation, the main lines of the compositional concept. In a sense, Liszt’s work of transcription sets us on a path that can help us unravel Beethoven’s own priorities. The other three movements were transcribed in 1863-65, as was the Eighth Symphony, which completes this recording. Thus more than twenty years elapsed between the transcription of the Marcia funebre of the Third Symphony and the rest of the work. The Eroica (1804) and the Eighth Symphony (1812) are situated at opposite ends of an extremely eventful period in Beethoven’s life, marked off, on one side, by the Heiligenstadt Testament (1802), the creative impulse of the Second Symphony, the Piano Sonatas op.31, the ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata, the ‘Waldstein’ and ‘Appassionata’ sonatas, and on the other by the letters to the ‘Immortal Beloved’, his illness, and his fairly disastrous meeting with Goethe. After the Eighth, Beethoven entered a relatively long period of sterility that was to last until 1815, the year of the two Cello Sonatas op.102. In a sense, the Liszt of 1863 gives a version of the Eroica that seems almost pacified, as if monumentalised. This is also a Liszt who has under his belt the solid experience of symphonic

conducting and composition acquired in Weimar. No redundant or flashy effects. No grandiloquent heroism. The text, just the text, the essence of the text. It is also possible that this serenity was a result of the particularly contemplative atmosphere of the Oratory of the Madonna del Rosario on Monte Mario in Rome, where Liszt was living at the time. As everyone knows, the Eroica Symphony is in four movements: an Allegro con brio in first-movement sonata form; the Marcia funebre, Adagio assai, already discussed above; a Scherzo, Allegro vivace; and a Finale, Allegro molto. Liszt offers an interpretation that, in its sobriety, is not genuinely heroic. In shunning the anecdotal, he tends towards an abstract conception and is more in line with the interpretation of Berlioz, who wrote in his Étude critique des Symphonies de Beethoven: ‘It is a great mistake to truncate the inscription placed by the composer at the head of the work. It is entitled “Heroic Symphony to celebrate the memory of a great man”. One can see that we are dealing here not with battles or triumphal marches, as many people, misled by the mutilation of the title, must expect, but with grave and profound thoughts, with melancholy recollections, with ceremonies imposing in their grandeur and their sadness, in a word, with the funeral oration of a hero. I know few examples in music of a style in which grief has shown itself capable of constantly conserving such pure forms.’ The Eighth Symphony is doubtless not the most famous of the nine. Composed in close proximity to the Seventh, it long remained in that work’s shadow. It is nonetheless shot through with original features. Composed in the key of F major, it consists of four movements: an Allegro vivace e con brio, an extremely witty and piquant Allegretto scherzando, a Tempo di Menuetto, and an Allegro vivace. The work does not really possess a slow movement, and Beethoven, contrary to his habits, here composes not a scherzo but a minuet. It is the Allegretto scherzando, written in place of the slow movement, that takes over the impulsive, terse, rhythmic dimension of the customary scherzo. This transcription by a Liszt

in the years of his full maturity shows the great virtuoso in scintillating form. The first movement presents an ample pianistic style that, without overusing orchestral effects on the keyboard – tremolos and octaves, repeated chords and octaves, more or less complaisant repeated-note figuration – succeeds in finding an accurate equivalent for Beethovenian discourse. Of course, Liszt does employ tremolos and octaves – in truth, he hardly has any option but to do so, given the density and the resonant continuity of Beethoven’s writing; but all these devices that could so easily topple over into facility are tightly controlled by the melodic and rhythmic logic of the discourse of the original, the just expression of which is Liszt’s priority. The difficulties specific to the second movement are very subtly handled. Chief among these is the need to reproduce without excess detail the blend of proliferating events and well-nigh mechanical terseness that characterises the dry-point etching of this quasi-Rossinian Allegretto scherzando. Liszt keeps the relationship of complementarity-compensation between staccato and doublings in careful balance throughout, while at the same time a skilful distribution of the material between the two hands enables him to respect the contrasts and confrontations of sonic perspectives. In Liszt’s hands the Tempo di minuetto is almost Schumannesque. The concluding Allegro vivace is brimming with challenges, notably because of the extreme briskness of the repeated-note figuration. These rapid repetitions constitute a risk in themselves, that of slowing and weighing down the movement. With great freedom, Liszt invents a formula founded on tremolos that enables him to get round the difficulty and thus retain the full concentration and energy of Beethoven’s discourse.

The instrument was restored by us 2012-13 after I found it in extremely poor condition. Because I love Blüthner and their early concert-size pianos are very rare, we took up the challenge of beginning the restoration. Once you’ve spent 300 hours, you don’t feel like stopping, one would not stop and the whole restoration ended up taking us much more than 1000 hours... The great and famous piano builders, Bechstein, Steinway and Blüthner all started business in 1853, Franz Liszt became familiar with all of them in later life. His favourite student Alexander Siloti played his first concert in the Blüthner Hall. YURY MARTYNOV After studies at the Central Special Music School of the Tchaikovsky National Conservatory in Moscow, Yury Martynov continued his training at the Conservatory’s senior department where he studied the piano and the organ with such celebrated professors as M. S. Voskresenskiy and A. A. Parshin.

In 1993-94 he studied harpsichord and basso continuo in France with Professor I. Wjunisky and took classes at the Conservatoire Jean Wiéner in Bobigny and the Conservatoire Claude Debussy in Paris, from both of which he graduated with gold medals. From 1989 onwards Yury Martynov gave many concerts in a wide range of programmes as a soloist and member of chamber ensembles in prestigious venues in Russia. He has also appeared in many countries in Europe, and in Japan, Turkey, and the United States. He has taken part in numerous festivals and musical events in Russia and abroad, including the Sviatoslav Richter December Nights in Moscow, the Mozartfest in Würzburg, the Sans-Souci Festival in Potsdam, Raritäten von Klaviermusik in Husum, the St Petersburg Early Music Festival, the Vantaa Baroque Festival, the York Early Music Christmas Festival, and Liszt en Provence. Yury Martynov has appeared in concert with many talented musicians, among them Alexei Lubimov, Mario Brunello, Natalia Gutman, Saulius Sondeckis, Peter Schreier, Sigiswald Kuijken, Boris Tevlin, Alexander Rudin, Dmitry Liss, Michiyoshi Inoue, and Barnabas Kelemen. In 2000 he joined forces with Sergey Filchenko and Dmitry Sokolov to found the PLAYel Trio.
