YURY MARTYNOV Parallèlement à son intégrale des symphonies de Beethoven dans la transcription pour clavier de Liszt, réalisée sur instruments anciens, Yury Martynov montre un autre aspect de son grand talent de pianiste et de musicien : l’interprétation éclairante qu’il donne, sur un Steinway résolument moderne, d’œuvres d’un avant-gardiste de la première moitié du 20ème siècle, Serge Prokofiev.

Se trouvent ainsi réunies ici des œuvres de l’avant-seconde guerre mondiale (Sonate n°5, Pensées), une œuvre « de guerre » (Sonate n°6) et les douze merveilleuses pièces de Musique pour enfants.

Alongside his ongoing complete recording of the Beethoven symphonies in their keyboard transcriptions by Liszt, performed on period instruments, Yury Martynov here displays another aspect of his outstanding talents as pianist and musician: an illuminating interpretation, on a thoroughly modern Steinway, of compositions by a figure of the early twentieth-century avant-garde, Sergey Prokofiev. The programme features works from the pre-World War II period (Sonata no.5, Pensées), a ‘War Sonata’ (no.6), and the twelve marvellous pieces of Music for Children, familiar to many budding pianists.

Elève au Conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg, Serge Prokofiev (1891-1953) y a reçu une formation complète en écriture musicale, composition, orchestration et piano, pour lequel il a bénéficié de l’enseignement de l’efficace et redoutable pédagogue Anna Essipova, remportant en 1914 le prix du concours Rubinstein.

Le piano l’accompagna toute sa vie durant, et son importante production pour cet instrument, hormis une multitude de pièces diverses généralement regroupées en recueils, est dominée par neuf sonates échelonnées entre 1909 et 1947.

Après avoir connu une nette désaffection dans la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, la sonate pour piano a retrouvé une nouvelle existence, principalement grâce aux compositeurs russes. A la suite de Scriabine, et parallèlement à Medtner et à Feinberg, Prokofiev est un de ceux qui participent le plus activement à ce renouveau. Ses quatre premières sonates datent de ses années pré-révolutionnaires, la cinquième de sa période occidentale, et les quatre dernières sont écrites après son retour en URSS. Au cours de la vingtaine d’années passées en Occident (1918-1938), les dernières étant marquées par des relations de plus en plus resserrées avec son pays natal, Prokofiev se consacre majoritairement à des œuvres de vastes effectifs et proportions : concertos (N°3,4,5 pour piano, N°2 pour violon), ballets (Chout, Le Pas d’acier, Le Fils prodigue), opéras (L’Amour des trois oranges, L’Ange de feu), symphonies (N°2,3,4). Confie-t-il épisodiquement son inspiration au piano seul, il cultive alors davantage la petite et la moyenne forme que la grande (Contes de la vieille grand-mère, Choses en soi, Sonatines, Pensées). Une seule sonate donc, au cours de cette période, la N°5 écrite en 1923 lors d’un séjour à Ettal dans les Alpes bavaroises. Elle se ressent un peu de cette notion de sonatine qu’à la suite de Ravel, Prokofiev affectionnait. Plus tard, peu de temps avant sa mort, il y apporta quelques remaniements. Elle est dédiée au musicologue Piotr Souvtchinski, ancien collaborateur de la revue Le Contemporain musical, ami, conseiller et dé-

fenseur de plusieurs compositeurs de l’avant-garde russe et occidentale (Prokofiev, Stravinsky, mais aussi Pierre Boulez). La sonate présente une forme remarquablement équilibrée en trois mouvements concis, d’une durée à peu près équivalente, d’environ quatre à cinq minutes chacun. Sans armure à la clé, elle est centrée sur le ton d’ut majeur favori de Prokofiev, bien que s’ouvrant par moments sur un considérable élargissement de la notion de tonalité. Le premier mouvement, Allegro tranquillo, offre dans l’ensemble une texture sonore assez fine, en restant assez nettement centré dans le médium et l’aigu du clavier. La figure de quatre doubles croches qui amorce régulièrement les premières phrases du thème initial cède bientôt la place à des triolets puis des quintolets, ceux-ci accompagnant l’énigmatique second thème indiqué narrante, sous-entendant un récit imaginaire. L’important développement où passent les deux thèmes ainsi que d’autres éléments constitutifs de la première partie, culmine sur une fausse réexposition du premier thème fortissimo, corsée de l’indication sonoramente, peu avant la réexposition réelle. Suit un Andantino dans un rythme à 3/8 où la propension du compositeur à des effets d’ostinato se reconnaît aux accords staccato maintenus, à peu de moments près, durant tout le mouvement, chaque premier temps de mesure étant marqué d’une acciacature. Le caractère d’ensemble est ironique, étrange, le discours mélodique suit des contours imprévisibles, les dissonances sont abondantes, le registre tend là encore vers l’aigu, hormis la partie centrale qui fait soudainement contraste en se voilant d’ombres.

Des fusées de sextolets ramènent au premier thème. Le finale Un poco allegretto, commence en demi-teintes, dans un esprit qui rappelle d’abord celui du premier mouvement, puis suit une progression qui combine des éléments de toccata et de scherzo, avec quelques rappels des accords mordants de l’ Andantino. Toute la dernière partie développe une vigueur bien signée Prokofiev, à travers la frappe des accords, l’articulation des doigts, et les ostinatos d’octaves brisées dans l’extrême grave.

C’est après son retour définitif en URSS, où il est retenu à partir de 1938, que Prokofiev revient, après seize ans d’interruption, à la sonate pour piano en produisant entre 1939 et 1944 le triptyque de ce qu’on appelle ses « sonates de guerre » N°6-7-8, qui marquent l’apogée de son œuvre pianistique. Selon Myra Mendelssohn, sa seconde épouse, la 6e sonate, écrite en 1939, aurait été inspirée par la lecture du livre de Romain Rolland sur Beethoven. Mais le modèle de l’humanisme beethovénien ne pouvait évidemment apparaître que chimérique à Prokofiev, compte tenu de la réalité qu’il observait autour de lui, même en affectant de se désintéresser de la politique. C’est de cette réalité, celle de deux totalitarismes l’un en face de l’autre, de l’imminence du conflit mondial et de la situation de l’être humain dans ce contexte, que parle la 6e sonate. Prokofiev en fut lui-même le premier interprète, mais c’est surtout sous les doigts de Sviatoslav Richter, alors âgé de 24 ans, qu’elle entra véritablement dans l’histoire du répertoire pianistique. Dans un article relatant ses rencontres avec le compositeur, Richter témoigne de l’effet immédiat que l’œuvre produisit sur lui : « Je fus frappé par l’étonnante clarté du style et par la perfection de la construction. Je n’avais encore jamais rien entendu de pareil. Avec une hardiesse barbare, le compositeur rompt avec les idéaux romantiques pour animer sa musique des pulsions dévastatrices du 20e siècle ». Ces derniers mots du pianiste se confirment dès les premières mesures de l’Allegro moderato qui exposent le thème principal, jouant sur une équivoque tonale majeur-mineur, dur, violent, répété avec acharnement. Le second thème, apportant le contraste d’une paix sereine a beau créer un bref état d’abstraction, c’est bien par des accents de menace et de destruction que le mouvement sera dominé. Le procédé le plus éloquent est celui qui consiste à faire interrompre des tentatives de réapparition de cette pure mélodie par les interjections péremptoires du premier thème, figurant l’homme aux prises avec la machine totalitaire, laquelle aura le dernier mot dans la mesure conclusive. Le second mouvement Allegretto, lance un thème en staccatos d’accords, légers et

narquois, ironie soulignée à plusieurs reprises par un accompagnement sous forme de quintolets répétitifs de courts arpèges descendants, curieux borborygmes qui, à l’orchestre, auraient été instrumentés au basson. Les staccatos traversent le mouvement en alternance avec des motifs tour à tour robustes ou mélodieux. Après le mouvement précédent, on peut voir dans ce scherzando une réaction de l’individualité, critique, lucide, positive - et prudente… L’oasis lyrique de l’œuvre est le troisième mouvement Tempo di valzer, lentissimo. Ici, c’est l’auteur de Roméo et Juliette qui parle, traduisant le meilleur de la sensibilité humaine à travers le rythme gracieux de la valse, à l’intérieur d’une mesure à 9/8.

Mais la réalité n’est pas oubliée pour autant et des nuages s’accumulent, une crispation surgit en sonorités acérées sur un fond de triolets ostinato. Prémonition justifiée, car le final Vivace est bien un constat de barbarie : le monde est entré dans la guerre. Le style pianistique ici est proche d’une toccata, technique souvent représentative de Prokofiev. Comme dans le premier mouvement, la voix de l’humain s’efforce de se faire entendre au milieu des tournoiements et des déhanchements grotesques, avec notamment un thème mélodieux et populaire, qui apporte le principal effet contrastant. Et ainsi qu’il le fait assez fréquemment, dans un réflexe de retour à l’idée première, Prokofiev introduit dans son final une citation de l’Allegro initial. Son thème principal, qui résonne d’abord comme un écho lointain et interrogatif, retrouve toute sa virulence dans la coda. Après un remarquable effet de bitonalité, dans une course divergente vers les extrêmes du clavier d’une gamme de si bémol majeur montante à la main droite et de ré majeur descendante à la main gauche, les dernières mesures concluent la sonate par de furieux trépignements.

La période occidentale de Prokofiev a été marquée par des périodes d’intérêt pour la philosophie et des moments d’introspection ; on en trouve notamment un témoignage avec les deux pièces de 1928 intitulées Choses en soi, échos à des

lectures de Kant. Terminé six ans plus tard (1933-34), le triptyque des Pensées op.62 va jusqu’au bout de l’abstraction méditative du compositeur, et oblige l’interprète autant que l’auditeur à un effort pour en dépasser la sensation d’aridité et en reconnaître la valeur. On peut trouver quelques ressemblances avec l’esprit de Hindemith dans ces trois pièces où la recherche d’une formulation aussi personnelle que secrète prend le parti de sacrifier la séduction. Portant toutes des indications de tempi lents, successivement Adagio penseroso, Lento, Andante, ces trois pièces récitent des phrases aux conduites de voix surprenantes, laissant surgir des îlots de tonalités bientôt brouillées par des harmonies imprévisibles.

Dans chacune d’elles, un premier épisode statique est cependant suivi d’une certaine animation, intégrant le thématisme dans des dessins pianistiques, la plus remarquable étant à ce titre la seconde pièce, avec ses fines guirlandes de triples croches. Et l’ Andante final développe, au bout d’une progression dynamique, la vitalité rythmique bien reconnaissable de son auteur, culmination avant un retour à l’apaisement et à son idée première, comme refermant à nouveau la porte sur son monde intérieur.

On sait la complicité que l’auteur de Pierre et le loup entretenait avec le monde de l’enfance. Au cours de cette même année 1935 où il écrit ce conte, passant l’été en Russie au village de Polenovo, sur les bords de la rivière Oka, il travaille à plusieurs partitions de vaste envergure (le ballet Roméo et Juliette , le 2 e concerto pour violon), et pour se délasser, écrit pour piano la douzaine de miniatures qui constitueront la Musique pour enfants. Il s’inscrit ainsi dans le sillage de Tchaïkovski, le premier Russe à avoir produit un Album pour enfants. Contemporainement à Prokofiev, ou peu après lui, des compositions du même esprit naissent de la plume de Chostakovitch et surtout de Kabalevski, qui s’investira beaucoup dans ce répertoire. L’échelonnement des douze pièces n’est pas effectué au hasard, mais suit un ordre logique, une sorte de programme rassem-

blant les moments-clés, les petits événements, les observations de la nature, les jeux d’un enfant, du matin jusqu’au soir d’une journée de vacances. Par leur caractère, les pièces peuvent être subdivisées en plusieurs catégories : évocatrices ou descriptives (Le matin, Cortège de sauterelles, La pluie et l’arc-en-ciel, Sur les prés la lune se promène, cette dernière inspirée à Prokofiev par un paysage nocturne), narratives (Historiette), psychologiques (Repentir), observatrices des activités enfantines (Promenade, Attrape-qui-peut). Le goût du compositeur pour les rythmes de danses se retrouve dans la Tarentelle et la Valse . Mais ce qui frappe surtout à l’écoute de ces pièces, c’est leur richesse d’écriture, et la diversité des procédés techniques et expressifs : croisements de mains, staccatos, caractère national russe des mélodies comme dans Le Soir , ou jeu sur les contrastes harmoniques dans La Pluie et l’arc-en-ciel. Prokofiev réussit à ne jamais tomber dans le simplisme ni la banalité, et tout son cycle dégage un constant parfum de fraîcheur, en évitant toute ostentation didactique : la valeur pédagogique des pièces s’exercera d’elle-même en éveillant l’imagination et la sensibilité du jeune pianiste qui se retrouvera en elles tel qu’en lui-même.

As a student at the St Petersburg Conservatory, Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) received an all-round training in harmony and counterpoint, composition, orchestration, and piano. For the last-named he benefited from the teaching of the effective and formidable pedagogue Anna Esipova; in 1914 he won the Rubinstein Competition. The piano was to accompany him throughout his life, and his substantial output for the instrument, aside from a multitude of diverse pieces generally grouped into collections, is dominated by nine sonatas spread over the period from 1909 to 1947.

After falling sharply from favour in the second half of the nineteenth century, the piano sonata gained a new lease of life in the early years of the twentieth, chiefly thanks to Russian composers. Following in the footsteps of Scriabin, and alongside Medtner and Feinberg, Prokofiev was among those who participated most actively in this renewal. His first four sonatas date from his pre-Revolution years, the Fifth from his Western period, while the last four were written after his return to the USSR. During the two decades he spent in the West (1918-38), the final years of which were marked by increasingly close relations with his homeland, Prokofiev devoted himself mostly to works of vast proportions for very large forces: concertos (nos.3, 4, and 5 for piano, no.2 for violin), ballets ( Chout, Le Pas d’acier, The Prodigal Son ), operas ( The Love for Three Oranges , The Fiery Angel ), and symphonies (nos.2, 3, and 4). If, from time to time, he also channelled his inspiration into music for solo piano, he cultivated small and medium-sized forms ( Tales of an Old Grandmother, Things in Themselves, Two Sonatinas, PensÊes) more than largescale works. Hence he wrote just one sonata in this period, the Fifth, composed in 1923 during a stay at Ettal in the Bavarian Alps. It reflects to some extent the notion of the sonatina, for which Prokofiev, like Ravel before him, had consider-

able affection. He later revised the work, shortly before his death. It is dedicated to the musicologist Pyotr Suvchinsky, a former collaborator on the periodical Muzikalniy sovremennik (Contemporary music) and friend, adviser and champion of several composers of the Russian and Western avant-garde (Prokofiev, Stravinsky, but also Pierre Boulez). The sonata displays a remarkably balanced structure in three concise movements, lasting around four or five minutes each. There is no key signature, but the tonal centre is Prokofiev’s favourite C major, although the concept of tonality is considerably expanded at some points in the work. The first movement, Allegro tranquillo, offers for the most part a fairly delicately textured sonority, remaining quite markedly focused on the medium and treble of the keyboard. The four-semiquaver figure that begins the first phrases of the initial theme in regular fashion soon gives way to triplets, then quintuplets, the latter accompanying the enigmatic second theme, whose marking narrante implies some imaginary storyline. The substantial development, featuring the two themes in addition to other constitutive elements of the first section of the movement, culminates in a fausse reprise of the first theme, fortissimo reinforced by the marking sonoramente, shortly before the true recapitulation. Then comes an Andantino in 3/8 time where the composer’s propensity for ostinato effects is evident in staccato chords maintained virtually throughout the movement, with each first beat marked by an acciaccatura. The overall character is strange and ironic, the melodic discourse follows unexpected contours, and there is abundant use of dissonance; here too the register tends towards the upper part of the keyboard, except for the middle section, which affords a sudden contrast by draping itself in shadowy sonorities. Rising sextolet runs bring back the first theme. The finale, Un poco allegretto, begins in subdued fashion, in a spirit initially recalling that of the first movement, then follows a course combining elements of toccata and scherzo, with occasional reminders of the mordant chords of the Andantino. The whole final section builds up a vigorous peroration very typical of Prokofiev,

through firmly struck chords, digital articulation, and broken-octave ostinatos in the bottom register.

It was after returning for good to the USSR, where he was in effect stranded from 1938 onwards, that Prokofiev went back to the piano sonata, after a gap of sixteen years. Between 1939 and 1944 he produced the triptych now known as his ‘War Sonatas’, nos.6-8, which marks the peak of his œuvre for piano. According to Mira Mendelson, his second wife, the Sixth Sonata, written in 1939, was inspired by reading Romain Rolland’s book on Beethoven. But of course the model of Beethovenian humanism could not but seem chimerical to Prokofiev, given the reality he observed around him, even if he affected a lack of interest in politics.

That reality, with the confrontation of two totalitarian systems, the imminence of world war, and the situation of the human being in this context, is the subject of the Sixth Sonata. Prokofiev himself gave the first performance, but it was above all thanks to the interpretations of Sviatoslav Richter, then aged twenty-four, that it truly entered the piano repertory. In an article relating his encounters with the composer, Richter testifies to the immediate impact the work had on him: ‘I was struck by the extraordinary clarity of the style and the perfection of the construction of the composition. I had never heard anything like it. With singular boldness the composer severed himself from the ideals of Romanticism and included in his music the shattering pulse of the twentieth century.’ These last words of the pianist are confirmed right from the first bars of the Allegro moderato, which state the principal theme, playing on major-minor tonal ambiguity, harsh, violent, relentlessly repeated. Even though the second theme provides a contrast in its serene peace and creates a brief moment of respite, the movement will be dominated by images of menace and destruction. The most eloquent device is the way the attempts of this pure melody to reassert itself, as if to symbolise humanity grappling with the totalitarian machine, are cut short by the peremptory interjec-

tions of the first theme, which will have the last word in the final bar. The second movement, Allegretto, embarks on a theme in staccato chords, light and sardonic, their irony several times underlined by an accompaniment in the form of repetitive descending quintuplet arpeggios, curious rumblings which in an orchestral piece would have been scored for bassoon. The staccatos run through the movement, alternating with motifs by turns robust and melodious. After the preceding movement, one may see in this scherzando a reaction of individuality, critical, lucid, positive – and cautious . . . The work’s lyrical oasis is the third movement, Tempo di valzer, lentissimo. Here it is the creator of Romeo and Juliet who speaks, conveying the finest qualities of human sensibility through the gracious rhythm of a waltz in 9/8 time. But reality is by no means forgotten: clouds begin to accumulate, and the tension rises in scathing sonorities over a background of ostinato triplets. The premonition is justified, for the concluding Vivace acknowledges that barbarity is all around: the world has gone to war. The pianistic style here is close to that of the toccata, a technique often employed by Prokofiev. As in the first movement, the voice of humanity strives to make itself heard amid the grotesque swirling and swaying, notably with a tuneful, folklike theme that provides the principal effect of contrast. And, as he quite frequently does, in a reflex of reversion to his initial idea, Prokofiev introduces into his finale a quotation from the opening Allegro moderato. That movement’s principal theme, which sounds at first like a distant, interrogatory echo, regains all its virulence in the coda. After a remarkable bitonal effect, in a divergent race towards the extremities of the keyboard between a rising scale of B flat major in the right hand and a descending scale of D major in the left, the final bars conclude the sonata amid furious stamping.

Prokofiev’s years in the West were marked by periods of interest in philosophy and moments of introspection; a striking example of this is to be found in the two pieces of 1928 entitled Things in Themselves, which reflect his reading of Kant.

The triptych of Pensées op.62, completed six years later (1933-34), pushes this

vein of meditative abstraction to the extreme, and obliges both performer and listener to make an effort to go beyond the impression of aridity it gives and to recognise its value. One may discern certain resemblances to the spirit of Hindemith in these three pieces, where the quest for a formulation as personal as it is hermetic resolutely sacrifices all surface appeal. The three movements, all with slow tempo markings (successively Adagio penseroso, Lento, and Andante), recite phrases with surprising voice-leading, allowing islands of tonality to emerge only to cloud them soon afterwards with unpredictable harmonies. In each of them, however, an initial static episode is followed by a certain animation, integrating thematicism with pianistic motifs; the most remarkable in this respect is the second piece, with its delicate garlands of demisemiquavers. And, after a dynamic progression, the concluding Andante eventually develops the easily recognisable rhythmic vitality of its creator, in a climax that precedes the return to calm and to the initial idea, as if closing the door once more on the composer’s inner world.

It is well known that the composer of Peter and the Wolf felt a very close bond with the world of childhood. In the very same year that he wrote that celebrated tale, 1935, he spent the summer in the Russian village of Polenovo, on the banks of the river Oka. There he worked on several large-scale scores (the ballet Romeo and Juliet , the Second Violin Concerto), and, for relaxation, wrote the twelve miniatures for piano that were to be named Music for Children. In so doing he was following in the tradition of Tchaikovsky, the first Russian to have produced music specifically for children in his Album pour enfants . At much the same time as Prokofiev, or shortly afterwards, compositions in the same spirit issued from the pen of Shostakovich and, above all, Kabalevsky, who was to devote himself extensively to writing for young people. The dozen pieces are not arranged in a haphazard fashion, but follow a logical order, a sort of programme bringing to-

gether the key moments, the small events, the observations of nature, the games, that go up to make a child’s day during the holidays, from morning to evening. In terms of character, the pieces can be subdivided into several categories: evocative or descriptive (Morning, March of the Grasshoppers, The Rain and the Rainbow , The Moon Sails o'er the Meadows – this last piece was inspired by a nocturnal landscape Prokofiev saw), narrative (A Little Story), psychological (Regrets), observation of children’s activities ( Promenade, Playing Tag). The composer’s taste for dance rhythms is found in Tarantella and Waltz. But what is most striking when one listens to these pieces is their stylistic richness, and the diversity of the technical and expressive devices: hand-crossing, staccato, the Russian national character of the melodies as in Evening , or the play on harmonic contrasts in The Rain and the Rainbow. Prokofiev manages never to lapse into the simplistic or the banal, and the whole cycle exudes a constant freshness, avoiding all didactic ostentation: the pieces automatically achieve their pedagogical aim by stimulating the imagination and the sensibility of the young pianist, who will feel perfectly at home in them.
