Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet Op. 135 The String Quartet in F, opus 135, was the last complete work Beethoven composed, only a few months before his death in March 1827. It is traditionally grouped together with his other late quartets, opp. 127, 130, 131, 132 and the Grosse Fuge; but it’s hard not to wonder what Beethoven would have thought of that grouping. Certainly opus 135 is the black sheep of this bunch. Where the other quartets are monumental in scale, sprawling in their expressive reach and scope, and often searching for a new formal basis for the quartet genre altogether, opus 135 stands apart: tightly reasoned, having an airy and transparent texture, playful and teasing in so many places, it is the work of a composer who seems to have suddenly attained some new, simple truth after miles of struggle. It is more similar in length and structure to his early opus 18 quartets than to the later ones, and yet it could not be mistaken for an opus 18 quartet: it is a greater and deeper achievement than those quartets, yet somehow less ambitious, less reaching, at the same time.

The first movement is as spare in texture as any quartet movement Beethoven ever wrote. It begins with a four-note question in the viola, colored with a mock-serious minor note in the cello; the first violin answers with a giggling echo. Right away the composer is signalling that here he will have nothing to do with the old, earnest questions of existence

or fate; this is to be put aside, at least for the time being. What ensues is a genial, often Haydn-esque Allegretto in 2/4 time, which ambles along, four friends sharing a melody or two between them, breaking it into fragments so that everybody gets a piece. The movement is a typical sonata form, with all the responsible sections of exposition, development and recapitulation; but it feels more like an airy distillation of that form, with its spareness, its fragmentation, and its economy of means. It is music that speaks to us about the process of creating, a blueprint where we see all the parts laid out before our eyes, and are given a glimpse inside Beethoven’s mind as he fits them together.

The second movement is a quicksilver scherzo.

The parts at the beginning stage a rhythmic comic act, ill-fitting and awkward, everyone sitting on the wrong beat, then suddenly falling heavily onto a unison E-flat that is also off the beat, stuck in the wrong meter for awhile before righting itself (sort of). This section is abruptly succeeded by a more brilliant one featuring a set of rapid upward scales in the first violin, playful and yet tense and expectant.

Then an extraordinary eruption occurs, a fortissimo section where the lower instruments are stuck in an infinite whirling loop while the first violin, berserk, goes off on an impossible tangent. This eventually spirals down to a quiet unison, where, for a brief instant one hears the four simple pitches that the movement is based on. Finally the opening section returns in all its bumptiousness.

The third movement: a dark hymn, a whispered prayer. In early sketches, Beethoven designated it “Süsser Ruhegesang oder Friedengesang”, a sweet

song of calm or peace. It is one of the half-dozen slow movements that stand at the pinnacle of his late-period achievement, and it serves as the expressive center of gravity for this quartet. In fact it is a theme with four variations, but they unfold in such a continuous fashion that this is not immediately obvious. Set in D-flat major, it feels a universe away from the sunny F major key of the rest of the quartet; we have been pulled out of the public eye and find ourselves hearing an intimate confession.

The theme is in the lowest register for all four instruments, husky and sorrowing. The first variation lifts us higher up, visiting some painful harmonic moments, but maintaining much of the tone of the original. In the second variation, we are taken to the minor key; the flowing rhythms of the earlier music are lost, and replaced with stony, halting steps. This is one possible answer to the prayer, an unthinkable rejection, a bereft state. Some measure of relief comes in the final two variations, as we return to the major, and the cello reassuringly takes the melody.

The last variation is the most extraordinary part of the movement: the first violin, winged, hints at the theme in gentle, gasping rhythms, while the other instruments describe simple upward arpeggios. It is a movement that overflows with forgiveness and love, but is also full of great sadness.

climax before subsiding. Then follows the main Allegro section, joyful and affirmative, marked “Es muss sein!” -- “it must be!” Two-thirds of this movement then unroll with barely a cloud on the horizon. All is happiness, high jinks, carefree melody, playfulness. It is all the more shocking when the minorkey introductory question -- muss es sein -- returns gigantically, terrifyingly, and almost without warning.

It is one final struggle; and this time, it appears, the beast is tamed, the doubts laid to rest. The music dances away through the coda, teasing, pianissimo, and is crowned by one final boisterous affirmation.

The final movement bears a strange inscription: “Der schwer gefasste Entschluss”, or “The Difficult Resolution.” The slow introduction, which features a rising minor-key question in the lower instruments, is marked “Muss es sein” -- “must it be?” Here we have the Beethoven who poses difficult questions, literally. This brief introduction reaches an anguished

There has been endless debate about just what this “difficult resolution” was, and many theories have been advanced. Is it about facing and accepting death? Is it another weighty philosophical question?

Is it the laundry bill that has to be paid? Beethoven’s note to his publisher hints that it might simply be the necessity of finishing the composition, and bidding farewell to a favorite genre: “Here, my dear friend, is my last quartet. It will be the last; and indeed it has given me much trouble. For I could not bring myself to compose the last movement. But as your letters were reminding me of it, in the end I decided to compose it. And that is the reason why I have written the motto: “The difficult resolution--Must it be?--It must be, it must be!”.

String Quartet Op. 132 A poem by Dylan Thomas begins: Your pain shall be a music in your string And fill the mouths of heaven with your tongue Art has the capacity to take on the burdens of existence and lend to them in reflection beauty and nobility which both console and edify. Ludwig van Beethoven was a man within whom the trials and triumphs of being resonated loudly. His ability to translate these into music was not something he took lightly; sensing the pressure of time in his final years he chose to renounce the felicities of life and devote his energies fully to composition. For Beethoven the act of composition was an act of giving, of doing for others, and the last years of his life saw the birth of a remarkable set of works which are indeed a gift. His late period works offer hope of transcendence through penetrating insight into the nature of suffering and difficulty. Inspired, perhaps, by the inherent intimacy and flexibility of the medium, Beethoven wrote five epic string quartets during these years.

The quartet Op. 132, in a minor, begins in shadows, tenuously searching, reaching towards the unknowable. The introductory material of the quartet encompasses the sense of the infinite within the merest of whispers filled with portent and possibility. The voices echo one another with a four note motif which is to permeate the first movement, unstable and yearning. A brief torrent of whirling notes unleashed in the first violin gives way to a restless theme which will be wrestled with throughout the movement.

In all of Beethoven this is perhaps the movement

which best embodies a sense of process. One gets the feeling of being inside the composer’s mind and imagination as he wends his way through the argument, including not only forward progression but distractions and digressions as well, all integrated into the evolving shape of the movement. Beethoven displays here what musicologist Maynard Soloman calls the “potential for coherence within the fragmentary.” In embracing disorder, the composer manages to create a compelling structure achieved through careful balancing of musical quanta. Coherence is earned through struggle with confusion, purification through tribulation.

The second movement perhaps owes its inspiration to its counterpart in Mozart’s A Major quartet, K 464, a piece of which Beethoven was fond. As in that earlier piece the movement opens with a unison figure gently poised between the graceful and the austere.

A more tender melody is then intertwined with the opening material in a somewhat odd pas-de-deux.

Irregular rhythms and slightly anxious expressive markings lend the dance a quirky, uncertain lilt.

As if to assuage this unease the trio section could hardly be more open, simpler, or more innocent.

Evoking bagpipes and childlike play, the flow of the music gets interrupted once briefly by an ominous and threatening pronouncement initiated by the viola and cello. It is a frightening moment, seemingly unprovoked, the darkness lurking behind our fragile states of happiness. It is quickly dispelled by the return of the bagpipes and then of the main dancing section of the movement, but the sense of portent hovers in the air even at the movement’s close.

Certainly one of the most expansive of Beethoven’s slow movements, the third movement is entitled “song of thanksgiving to God for recovery from an illness, in the lydian mode.” This is a profound and deeply personal utterance, rooted certainly in biographical fact, but perhaps in metaphysical metaphor as well. The ancient modes, with a slightly different color than the major and minor scales on which most music of this period is based, and thus exotic in sound, suggest piety and devotion.

(Among Beethoven’s unrealized plans at the end of his life were a “pious song in a symphony in the ancient modes” and a “chorus in the ancient modes” as part of an oratorio.) Hymn-like sections alternate with sections marked “feeling new strength.” In this quicker, far more ornate music, there is the sense of a vibration of the soul as it aspires upward toward heaven, of illumination born of a struggle with darkness. At each return of the hymn-like music it becomes more sensitive, more vulnerable. At its third and final appearance Beethoven writes in the score above the material which weaves through the intoned hymn melody “with the most intimate feeling.” The movement builds to a climax of nearly unthinkable intensity, filled with love and recognition of the sublime. Its denouement leads to an almost complete stillness, with only the merest suggestion of a vibration within, a sense of peace. The last moments perhaps relate to something Beethoven had copied into one of his notebooks of this period, from an Indian religious text, “for God, time absolutely does not exist.” This movement must be counted among the greatest of Beethoven’s creations.

Having reached toward the celestial, Beethoven reestablishes the terrestrial with an “alla marcia.”

This march is one which continually dissolves into more delicate, playful music, as if unsure of exactly in which direction the march should head, not yet ready for a triumphant conclusion despite all that has preceded it. Uncertainty gains the upper hand with a quickening of the pulse ushering in a recitative in the first violin accompanied by quaking, trepidatious tremolos underneath. The most famous use of recitative to introduce a large scale final movement is surely in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and in fact the sketches for the theme of the last movement of the Op. 132 quartet were originally intended for a purely instrumental finale of that work. Whereas in the choral finale Beethoven eventually wrote for the Ninth Symphony the recitative serves to cast aside doubt and obscurity in favor of light and joy, the route he chose to take in the Op. 132 quartet is wrought with further struggle. An anxious yearning characterizes this finale, with the composer indicating that the main theme should be passionately expressive. To an even greater degree than in the second movement where an inherently dance-like rhythmic meter is slightly distorted by unsettling surface elements, here the same meter is almost rent asunder by heaving, nervous figuration. No respite is to be had, even when more simply lyrical material attempts to assuage the unrest. About two thirds of the way through the movement the tempo accelerates and the music reaches fever pitch, with the cello crying out in the register usually reserved for the violins, approaching a feeling of terror. This is the crisis that at long last brings resolution, although not in one fell swoop. The key of A major is entered

into gently, with a sense of freedom attained, open and soaring. The quartet gathers strength toward a conclusion affirming victory of the spirit, only to be thwarted by brief hesitation and uncertainty. When this moment of uncertainty is reached for the second time, however, there is hesitation no longer and the quartet ends having triumphed over adversity.

Perhaps this is the greatest gift that Beethoven has given us. He grapples with the vicissitudes of our inner and outer lives, in full acknowledgement of our native suffering, and through the transformative power of art leads us to recognition of beauty and faith in humanity.

Brentano String Quartet Mark Steinberg, Serena Canin (violins) Misha Amory (viola) Nina Maria Lee (cello) Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has been singled out for its technical brilliance, musical insight and stylistic elegance.

Within a year’s time, the Brentano String Quartet claimed the distinction of being named to three major awards, winning the first Cleveland Quartet Award, the 1995 Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the 10th Annual Martin E. Segal Award.

For its first appearance in Great Britain at Wigmore Hall the Brentano was awarded with the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for the most outstanding debut in 1997. The Quartet became the first quartet-in-residence at Princeton University in 1999, and served as quartet-in-residence at New York University from 1995. In the same year they were chosen by The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to participate in the inaugural season of Chamber Music Society Two - a program designed for outstanding emerging artists and chamber musicians.

The Quartet performs extensively, both in North America where all its members reside, as well as on stages in Europe, Japan and Australia (England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Greece) and international festivals like, Edinburgh, Bath, De Divonne, Kuhmo, Mozartwoche in Salzburg and many others. Enjoying an especially close relationship with Mitsuko Uchida they regularly appear with her in the United States, Europe and Japan.

Other prestigious artists they have worked with include the soprano Jessye Norman and pianist Richard Goode.

In past seasons it appeared to great acclaim among others at the Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Center London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Konzerthaus in Vienna and Berlin, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House as well as in Cologne, Hamburg, Basel, Geneva, Madrid and in Copenhagen with Barbara Sukowa and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. They also played with great virtuosity also at Kissinger Sommer, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Festival de Fayence, Aspen Festival and Salt Bay Chamber Festival.

Their eclectism and wish to go beyond the boundaries of the standard string quartet repertoire have led the quartet to perform both Renaissance and early music pieces with transcriptions of, for example, Gesualdo and Monteverdi’s Madrigals, Fantasias of Purcell and secular works by Josquin des Prés. In the contemporary field, the Brentanos regularly collaborate with living composers among others Elliot Carter and György Kurtág and interpreted commissioned works by Milton Babbitt, Chou Wen-Chung, Charles Wuorinen, Bruce Adolphe, Steven Mackey and Jonathan Dawe. To commemorate their tenth anniversary, the quartet commissioned ten composers who wrote a piece inspired by and to be interwoven with excerpts of Bach’s Art of Fugue.

time in Europe in the beginning of 2005. For their project called “Fragments” the musicians combine incomplete works by composers such as Mozart, Schubert, Bach and Schostakowitsch with contemporary compositions among others by Sofia Gubaidulina and Bruce Adolphe.

The Brentano Quartet has released their first CD featuring Mozart’s quartet K. 464 and his Quintet K. 593 recorded with viola player Hsin-Yun Huang, for the French label æon, with whom they pursued their collaboration with the recording of the late Beethoven string quartets (November 2011). Prior to this, the quartet had released a CD with Haydn’s Op 71 as well as a recording of Steven Mackey’s music, the latter for Albany records.

Ludwig van Beethoven Quatuor à cordes Op. 135

Le quatuor à cordes en fa majeur opus 135 est la dernière œuvre complète composée par Beethoven, quelques mois seulement avant sa mort en mars 1827. Traditionnellement, il est regroupé avec ses autres quatuors tardifs, op. 127, 130, 131, 132 et la Grosse Fuge ; il est difficile toutefois de ne pas se demander ce que Beethoven aurait pensé de ce regroupement. L’opus 135 est, sans aucun doute, la brebis galeuse de cet ensemble. Parmi les autres quatuors, monumentaux, d’une portée et d’une ambition expressives considérables et souvent à la recherche d’une nouvelle base formelle pour le genre du quatuor dans son ensemble, l’opus 135 fait figure à part : strictement raisonné, de texture légère et transparente, si souvent enjoué et espiègle, il est l’œuvre d’un compositeur qui semble avoir atteint soudain quelque vérité simple et nouvelle après des kilomètres de lutte. Il ressemble plus, en longueur et en structure, aux premiers quatuors Op. 18 qu’aux quatuors plus tardifs ; mais malgré cela, on ne pourrait le prendre pour un quatuor de l’opus 18 : c’est une œuvre plus grande, plus profonde que ces quatuors, bien qu’étant en même temps, d’une certaine manière, moins ambitieuse et de moindre portée.

Le premier mouvement présente la texture la plus éthérée de tous les mouvements pour quatuor que Beethoven ait jamais écrits. Il commence par Brentano String Quartet

une question de quatre notes à l’alto, colorée par une note mineure à demi sérieuse au violoncelle, à laquelle le premier violon répond en écho par un petit gloussement de rire. D’emblée, le compositeur nous signale qu’il n’abordera pas ici les vieilles et sérieuses questions sur l’existence ou le destin ; celles-ci sont à écarter, du moins pour le moment.

S’ensuit un aimable Allegretto en 2/4, souvent haydenesque, qui évolue en toute tranquillité, quatre amis se partageant une mélodie ou deux, la brisant en fragments pour que chacun en ait sa part. Le mouvement est une forme sonate typique, avec toutes ses sections : exposition, développement et réexposition ; mais avec sa parcimonie, sa fragmentation, et son économie de moyen, elle semble plus une distillation légère de cette même forme.

C’est une musique qui nous parle du processus de création, un plan où nous voyons toutes les parties exposées sous nos yeux et qui nous permet de jeter un œil dans l’esprit de Beethoven pendant qu’il les assemble.

Le second mouvement est un scherzo très vif. Au début, les parties mettent en scène un numéro comique rythmique, mal ajusté et maladroit ; tout le monde y est assis sur le mauvais temps, puis tombe soudain lourdement sur un mi b unisson, décalé lui aussi, qui reste coincé quelque temps dans une mesure incorrecte avant de se redresser (si l’on peut dire). Cette section est suivie abruptement d’une section plus brillante, enjouée et toutefois tendue et chargée d’attentes, présentant un ensemble de gammes ascendantes rapides au premier violon.

Puis se produit une extraordinaire éruption, une section fortissimo où les instruments plus graves

sont pris dans un tourbillon sans fin pendant que le premier violon, déchaîné, se lance dans une impossible digression. Tout ceci finit par retomber sur un unisson paisible où, pour un bref instant, on entend les quatre simples notes sur lesquelles est basé le mouvement. Enfin, la section introductive revient dans toute sa suffisance.

Le troisième mouvement : un hymne sombre, une prière murmurée. Dans les premiers brouillons, Beethoven le nommait « Süsser Ruhegesang oder Friedengesang », doux chant de calme ou de paix.

C’est un des six mouvements lents constituant le sommet de son œuvre tardive, et constitue le centre de gravité expressif de ce quatuor. En réalité, il s’agit d’un thème avec quatre variations, mais elles se développent d’une manière si continue que cela n’est pas immédiatement évident. Ecrit en ré bémol majeur, le mouvement se trouve à des années lumières de la tonalité ensoleillée de fa majeur du reste du quatuor ; nous sommes arrachés à la scène publique, et nous retrouvons à entendre une confession intime. Le thème, rauque et endeuillé, sollicite le registre le plus bas de chacun des quatre instruments. Si la première variation nous entraîne un peu plus haut, nous faisant visiter quelques moments harmoniques douloureux, elle conserve en grande partie le ton de l’original. La seconde variation nous emmène vers la tonalité mineure ; les rythmes fluides de la musique initiale sont perdus, remplacés par des pas lourds et hésitants : une des réponses possibles à la prière, un inconcevable refus, un état d’abandon. Quelques mesures de soulagement nous sont apportées par les deux variations finales, lorsque nous retournons en majeur et

que le violoncelle, rassurant, reprend la mélodie. La dernière variation est la partie la plus extraordinaire du mouvement : le premier violon, comme ailé, fait au thème des allusions rythmiques délicates, haletantes, pendant que les autres instruments décrivent de simples arpèges ascendants. C’est un mouvement qui, tout en débordant de pardon et d’amour, est chargé d’une grande tristesse.

Le mouvement final porte une étrange inscription : « Der schwer gefasste Entschluss », ou « la décision difficilement prise ». Au-dessus de l’introduction lente – une question ascendante en mineur posée par les instruments graves – on peut lire « Muss es sein? » « Faut-il qu’il en soit ainsi ? ». Ici nous sommes en présence du Beethoven qui pose littéralement des questions difficiles. Cette brève introduction atteint un sommet angoissé avant de s’effondrer. Puis suit la section principale, Allegro, joyeuse et affirmative, portant l’inscription « Es muss sein » « Il le faut ! ». Les deux tiers de ce mouvement se déploient ensuite sous un ciel presque serein.

Tout est bonheur, frasques, mélodie insouciante et allégresse. Le retour écrasant, terrifiant, de la question introductive en mineur « Muss es sein » – sans le moindre avertissement, ou presque – n’en est que plus choquant. Il s’agit là d’un dernier combat ; mais cette fois, semble-t-il, la bête est apprivoisée, les doutes apaisés. La musique traverse la coda en dansant, espiègle, pianissimo, avant d’être couronnée par une ultime et bruyante affirmation.

Il a été spéculé infiniment sur ce à quoi se référait exactement cette « décision difficilement prise ». Au fait d’affronter et d’accepter la mort ? A une autre question philosophique importante ? A la facture

de la blanchisserie qu’il fallait régler ? La note écrite par Beethoven à son éditeur semble indiquer qu’il pourrait s’agir simplement de la nécessité de finir la composition, et de faire ses adieux à un genre bien-aimé : « Voici, mon cher ami, mon dernier quatuor. Ce sera le dernier ; et il m’a donné, en effet, beaucoup de fil à retordre. Car je n’arrivais pas à me résoudre à composer le dernier mouvement. Mais comme vos lettres me rappelaient qu’il fallait que je l’écrive, j’ai finalement décidé de le faire. C’est pour cela que j’y ai écrit cette devise : “La décision difficilement prise” “Faut-il qu’il en soit ainsi ?” “Oui, il faut, il le faut !” » Misha Amory

Ludwig van Beethoven était un homme en qui les épreuves et les triomphes de la vie résonnaient avec force, et le don qu’il possédait de les traduire en musique n’était pas une chose qu’il prenait à la légère ; sentant la pression du temps au cours de ses dernières années, il choisit de renoncer aux joies de la vie pour consacrer toutes ses énergies à la composition. Pour Beethoven, composer signifiait donner, faire pour les autres, et les dernières années de sa vie virent naître un remarquable ensemble de compositions, qui constitue – effectivement – un don. Ses œuvres de la période tardive nous offrent, à travers la compréhension pénétrante de la nature de la souffrance et de la difficulté, un espoir de transcendance. Inspiré, peut-être, par l’intimité et la flexibilité inhérentes à ce médium, Beethoven écrivit au cours de ces années cinq quatuors à cordes épiques.

Le quatuor Op. 132, en la mineur, commence dans l’obscurité, cherchant en tâtonnant, tendant les bras vers l’inconnaissable. Le matériau introductif du quatuor inscrit le sens de l’infini dans un murmure des plus ténus empli de présages et de possibilités.

Les voix se renvoient en écho un motif de quatre notes qui imprègnera, instable et languissant, le premier mouvement. Un bref torrent de notes tourbillonnantes lâché par le premier violon fait place

à un thème tourmenté contre lequel on luttera à travers le mouvement tout entier. Dans tout l’œuvre de Beethoven, ce mouvement est sans doute celui qui incarne le mieux le sentiment de processus. On a l’impression de se trouver à l’intérieur de l’esprit et de l’imagination du compositeur pendant qu’il se fraye un chemin à travers cette altercation, non seulement dans sa progression vers l’avant, mais jusque dans ses distractions et ses digressions, toutes intégrées dans la forme en évolution de ce mouvement. Beethoven déploie ici ce que le musicologue Maynard Soloman appelle le « potentiel pour la cohérence au sein du fragmentaire ». En embrassant le désordre, le compositeur réussit à créer une structure fascinante à travers un équilibrage subtil du matériau musical. Il conquiert la cohérence à travers la lutte contre la confusion, la purification à travers la tribulation.

Le second mouvement doit peut-être son inspiration à son pendant dans le quatuor en la majeur de Mozart K 464, une pièce que Beethoven aimait particulièrement. Comme dans cette pièce qui lui est antérieure, le mouvement s’ouvre sur un motif à l’unisson délicatement situé entre le gracieux et l’austère. Une mélodie plus tendre est entremêlée ensuite, en un « pas de deux » quelque peu étrange, au matériau introductif. Des rythmes irréguliers et des accents expressifs légèrement inquiets confèrent à la danse une cadence instable, incertaine. Comme pour dissiper ce malaise, le trio est d’une ouverture, d’une simplicité et d’une innocence rares. Evoquant des cornemuses et des jeux enfantins, le flux de musique est interrompu une fois brièvement par une déclaration inquiétante et menaçante amorcée

par l’alto et le violoncelle. C’est un moment terrifiant, que rien ne semblait présager, les ténèbres aux aguets derrière nos fragiles états de bonheur.

Rapidement dissipé par le retour des cornemuses puis par la section dansante principale du mouvement, le pressentiment continue toutefois de planer dans l’air jusqu’à la fin du mouvement.

Le troisième mouvement, sans aucun doute un des mouvements lents les plus expansifs de Beethoven, est intitulé « Chant d’action de grâce sacrée d’un convalescent à la Divinité, en mode lydien ».

C’est une déclaration profonde et profondément personnelle qui, si elle prend certainement ses racines dans une réalité biographique, les prend peutêtre aussi dans une métaphore métaphysique. Les modes anciens, à la couleur légèrement différente des gammes majeures et mineures sur lesquelles est basée la plus grande partie de la musique de cette époque, ont une couleur exotique qui suggère piété et dévotion. (Parmi les projets non réalisés de Beethoven à la fin de sa vie figurent un « Chant pieux dans une symphonie dans les modes anciens » et un « Chœur dans les modes anciens » comme partie d’un oratorio). Des sections au caractère d’hymne alternent avec des sections portant l’inscription « Avec une force nouvelle ». Cette musique plus rapide, beaucoup plus ornée, semble évoquer la vibration de l’âme aspirant au ciel, l’illumination née d’un combat contre les ténèbres. A chaque retour de la musique au caractère d’hymne, celle-ci devient plus délicate, plus vulnérable. A la troisième et dernière apparition de celle-ci, Beethoven écrit dans la partition, au-dessus du matériau entrelacé avec la mélodie psalmodiée de l’hymne : « Avec le

sentiment le plus intime ». Le mouvement évolue vers un climax d’une presqu’inconcevable intensité, empli d’amour et de reconnaissance du sublime. Son dénouement mène vers une immobilité presque totale, qui ne contient plus qu’une infime suggestion de vibration, un sentiment de paix. Les derniers moments se rapportent peut-être à quelque chose que Beethoven avait recopié dans un de ses carnets de notes de cette période d’un texte religieux indien : « pour Dieu, le temps n’existe absolument pas ». Il faut compter ce mouvement parmi les plus grandes créations de Beethoven.

Après avoir tendu vers le céleste, Beethoven rétablit le terrestre avec un « alla marcia ». Cette marche est une marche qui se dissout sans cesse en une musique plus délicate, plus enjouée, comme si elle n’était pas tout à fait sûre de la direction dans laquelle elle devait aller, pas prête encore pour une conclusion triomphante, en dépit de tout ce qui l’a précédée. L’incertitude prend le dessus avec une accélération de la pulsation introduisant un récitatif au premier violon accompagné en sourdine de trémolos tremblants et inquiets. L’exemple le plus célèbre de récitatif utilisé pour introduire un grand mouvement final se trouve sans aucun doute dans la Neuvième symphonie de Beethoven et, effectivement, les brouillons pour le thème du dernier mouvement du quatuor Op. 132 étaient prévus à l’origine pour un finale purement instrumental de cette symphonie. Mais, si dans le finale choral que Beethoven écrivit par la suite pour la Neuvième symphonie, le récitatif sert à écarter le doute et l’obscurité en faveur de la lumière et de la joie, la voie qu’il choisit d’emprunter dans le quatuor

Op. 132 est empreinte de nouvelles luttes. Un désir ardent et inquiet caractérise ce finale, dont le thème principal, selon les indications du compositeur, devrait être passionnément expressif. A un degré plus grand encore que dans le second mouvement, où une mesure rythmique fondamentalement dansante est légèrement distordue par des éléments de surface perturbants, ici la même mesure est pratiquement écartelée par une configuration houleuse et nerveuse. Aucun répit n’est possible, même lorsqu’un matériau plus simplement lyrique tente d’apaiser l’agitation. Au deux tiers à peu près du mouvement, le tempo s’accélère et la fébrilité de la musique atteint son comble, le violoncelle poussant des cris dans le registre habituellement réservé aux violons, presqu’en proie à la terreur. C’est cette crise qui apportera, finalement, une résolution, même si celle-ci ne sera pas tout à fait immédiate. L’entrée dans la tonalité de la majeur se fait en douceur, avec un sentiment de liberté retrouvée qui s’ouvre et va s’accroissant. Le quatuor, gagnant en puissance, se dirige vers une conclusion qui affirme la victoire de l’esprit, mais de brèves hésitations et incertitudes viennent contrarier sa progression. Toutefois, lorsque le moment d’incertitude est atteint pour la deuxième fois, toute hésitation disparaît, et le quatuor s’achève, victorieux de l’adversité. Il s’agit là sans doute du plus grand don que Beethoven nous ait fait. Il lutte avec les vicissitudes de nos vies intérieures et extérieures et, en parfaite connaissance de notre souffrance innée, nous amène, à travers le pouvoir transformateur de l’art, à la reconnaissance de la beauté et à la foi en l’humanité.

Brentano String Quartet Mark Steinberg, Serena Canin (violons) Misha Amory (alto) Nina Maria Lee (violoncelle) Formé en 1992, le quatuor américain Brentano est connu pour ses interprétations alliant une technique parfaite à une musicalité hors pair. Après seulement un an d’existence, le quatuor obtient les récompenses suivantes : Cleveland Quartet Award, Naumburg Chamber Music Award et Martin E. Segal Award. Suite à leurs magnifiques débuts en Angleterre au Wigmore Hall de Londres, le quatuor Brentano reçoit le Prix du meilleur récital attribué par la Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award.

Le quatuor est résident des Universités de Princeton, New York et fut choisi par la Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center pour participer à l’inauguration de leur saison de musique de chambre. En Europe, il a été quatuor résident au Wigmore Hall de septembre 1999 à septembre 2001.

Les salles de concert du monde entier ont accueilli le quatuor Brentano : Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall, St Luke’s Hall de Londres, Philharmonie de Cologne, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Opéra de Sydney (tournée VIVA en Australie), Festivals de Salzburg, Bath et Edimbourg ainsi que toutes les villes les plus importantes aux Etats-Unis.

Parmi leurs partenaires célèbres de musique de chambre, on compte la pianiste Mitsuko Uchida avec qui ils ont effectué une tournée européenne en mars 2006, le pianiste Richard Goode et la soprano américaine Jessye Norman.

Le répertoire du quatuor est vaste avec une particulière attention à la musique de la Renaissance, période sacrée de la polyphonie que des compositeurs comme Gesualdo, Monteverdi et Josquin des Prés ont transcendée, et la musique de notre temps. Le quatuor Brentano collabore régulièrement avec des compositeurs comme Elliot Carter ou György Kurtág et ont créé une liste impressionnante d’œuvres de, par exemple, Milton Babbitt, Chou Wen-Chung, Steven Mackey et Bruce Adolphe. Pour commémorer leur dixième anniversaire, le quatuor passa commande à dix compositeurs, dont Sofia Gubaïdulina, dont ils jouèrent les pièces en alternance avec l’Art de la Fugue de Bach qui les avait inspirées. Un autre projet « Fragments » combina des œuvres inachevées de Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach et Chostakovitch avec des œuvres contemporaines de Sofia Gubaidulina, Bruce Adolphe et autres.

Le quatuor Brentano est nommé d’après ce que de nombreux spécialistes s’accorde à penser qu’elle est la « Bien-aimée lointaine » à qui Beethoven déclara son amour via un de ses cycles de lieder. www.brentanoquartet.com

Le quatuor Brentano enregistre pour le label français, æon. Leur premier CD est consacré à Mozart (quatuor K464 et quintette K593 avec l’altiste HsinYun Huang) : « comment ne pas être saisi par la densité du tissu contrapuntique qu’ils tissent dans le premier mouvement du Quintette KV 593, ou par la plénitude lyrique qu’ils font jaillir de son poignant Adagio » (Diapason (5)), et est suivi de deux enregistrements des quatuors tardifs de Beethoven en novembre 2011 et mars 2013.

Le Brentano String Quartet a réalisé la musique pour le film A late Quartet (avec Philip Seymour Hoffmann et Christopher Walken) qui a été montré à l’International Film Festival à Toronto en 2012.
