There is an impeccable logic in pairing Aaron Copland (1900– 1990) and Carlos Chávez (1899–1978) on an album. Both were important in establishing and solidifying, each in his own environment, a musical language with a clear national profile and, at the same time, informed by an unmistakable modern outlook. On the other hand, after leaving their mark with works written in a clearly national vein, both Copland and Chávez effected a transition, in the late stages of their creative lives, towards a more universal, abstract mode of expression. And, last but not least, they had a close relationship which, beyond its personal dimension, became an

important link in the furthering of Mexican music in the United States, and of American music in Mexico. The dimension of this personal and professional link becomes crystal clear in their copious correspondence, which figures prominently in the Epistolario selecto de Carlos Chávez (‘Carlos Chávez: Selected Correspondence’), compiled by Gloria Carmona and published in Mexico City by the Fondo de Cultura Económica in 1989. While Chávez conducted in the Mexican ca­pital the world premieres of some of Copland’s works (El Salón México, the Second Symphony), Copland promoted in America the music of his friend and colleague, conducting several of Chávez’s more important orchestral works.

There are musical moments so overwhelming that, after being experienced for the first time, they are never forgotten. There is one such unforgettable moment in Copland’s Third Symphony. After the third movement, the fourth begins without pause or interruption, with a soft, mysterious version of a well-known melody on flutes and clarinets, played pianissimo. Suddenly, the melody modulates to a faraway key and brightly explodes on brass and percussion; these are the first measures of Copland’s own Fanfare for the Common Man (1942). Their inclusion in this symphonic transition remains one of the most intense musical moments in Copland’s output.

At the outset of the 1940s, some of Copland’s friends (Elliott Carter, David Diamond, Arthur Berger) insisted on the composer wri­ting a big, expansive orchestral work; even Samuel Barber wrote from Italy on this subject. At that time, Copland had been gathering themes and ideas which he planned to include in a new symphony. The opportunity came in 1943: 6

the Koussevitzky Foundation commissioned a new work from Copland, and thus the Third Symphony began to take shape. Copland started writing the work in August 1944 in Mexico, and the Symphony was finished in September 1946, just in time for its premiere. Copland himself wrote some notes, mostly technical in outlook, for the work’s first performance. Later, through other texts, he provided some interesting facts on this, the most extensive and ambitious of his orchestral works. For example, he wrote: There is something to be emphasized regarding my Third Symphony: it contains no popular or folk references. Any refe­ rence to jazz or folk material is pure coincidence. Nevertheless, I use my own music, that from the Fanfare for the Common Man, in an expanded and augmented manner, in the last movement. I took this opportunity to take the Fanfare’s materials a step further in order to satisfy my own wish to impart an affirmative tone to the Symphony. After all, it is a war piece or, more precisely, a piece on the end of war. It is an ambitious score, sometimes compared to Mahler and Shostakovich and, on occasion, to Prokofiev, especially in the second movement.

As a great admirer of Mahler, my music sometimes shows his influence, but I was never conscious of any other influence while writing this work.

Copland’s Third Symphony is probably his most important work, and is certainly a good showcase for the more typical musical elements in his production, skilfully synthesized in the score. Here we have the contours of

his music for film and theatre, the popular touch, music of a more abstract nature, the clearly American profile of some of its me­­lodies, and vague references to religious hymns and country dances. With these elements and a structural development built on traditional foundations, Copland created an expansive, very powerful work that is typical of his musical thought. The Third Symphony was premiered on 18 October 1946 by Serge Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After the first performance, the conductor described the work as the most important American symphony written up to that time. The work’s score bears a dedication to the conductor’s wife: ‘In memory of my dear friend Natalie Koussevitzky’.

It is worth noting that the inclusion of the Fanfare for the Common Man in the Symphony is no mere act of vanity on Copland’s part; as it happens, the Fanfare’s first two intervals (an ascending fourth and an ascending fifth) clearly dominate the Symphony’s entire thematic material. Thus, the spectacular and moving appearance of the Fanfare in the Symphony not only leaves a strong impact on the listener, it also articulates and unifies the work’s discourse. As so many other works throughout history, this one has had particularly intuitive and committed performers, as witnessed by these words from Copland: The conductor who has understood my music with greater intuition is Leonard Bernstein. His way of conducting the Third Symphony is the closest to what I had in mind when I wrote it.

It is worth noting that, strictly speaking, this is Copland’s Fourth Symphony, if one takes into account the Dance Symphony of 1925.

It can be said, in a more or less simple way, that Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonía india’s singular profile comes from three fundamental elements, fully interdependent: original indigenous melodies, rhythmic complexity and the use of certain pre-Hispanic percussion instruments. Regarding the autochthonous melodies it is worth noting that this is not the only work in which Chávez approached such musical sources; indigenous melodies are also present in such works as Los cuatro soles and El fuego nuevo. The composer said that this was the first music he ever heard, and that this music had nourished his musical sense and his musical taste. In particular, the Sinfonía india has at its core three me­lodies originating in three Mexican ethnic groups: the Seri and the Yaqui from Sonora, and the Huichol from Nayarit. The Sinfonía india’s rhythmic complexity is partly anchored in the composer’s respect for the rhythm patterns of the melodies he utilized.

Thus, a quick glance at the score will reveal, in the first five pages alone, the following time signature changes: 85, 42, 85, 42, 85, 43, 85, 43, 85, 42, 85, 42, 85. The rest of the work is built on a rhythmic layout as irregular as that of the beginning, and further on Chávez displays other combinations of these patterns with pulses in 87, 23 and 22. From the combination of all these rhythmic ­patterns arises a forward thrust that is undoubtedly one of the main assets in the whole Mexican symphonic repertoire. It is also worth noting that, after such an irregular beginning, Chávez introduces in its final pages, by way of contrast, a forceful and relentless ending built upon a long episode in a constant rhythm. At number 88 in the score, where Chávez indicates

Poco più vivo, sempre giusto (‘A bit livelier, always steady’), the work’s coda begins, 126 bars in an unchangeable 68 time signature. Brass instruments are especially prominent in this bright episode, the trombones’ brief but powerful glissandi adding a remarkable touch of energy to the Symphony’s finale.

The Symphony’s orchestration includes, on the other hand, a series of indigenous percussion instruments which, if the originals should be unavailable, can be substituted by their contemporary equi­valents: Indian drum, tlalpanhuéhuetl, water gourd, güiro, maracas, clay rattle, metal rattle, raspador, tenábaris, teponaztli. And alongside these indigenous instruments, the more conventional orchestral percussion, such as timpani, tenor drum, cymbals, xylophone and claves.

In the winter of 1935/6, Chávez made one of his many trips to the United States, and the Sinfonía india was born from an invitation to conduct a concert for the Columbia Broadcasting System. The work was written in New York between the end of 1935 and the beginning of 1936, and was first performed by Chávez himself conducting the CBS Orchestra on 23 January 1936. A few months later, on 10 and 11 April, Chávez conducted his Sinfonía india with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The work’s Mexican premiere took place on 31 July 1936, also under Chávez’s baton, during one of the Orquesta Sinfónica de México’s season concerts; the work was repeated on 18 September of that year.

To emphasize the Sinfonía india’s undeniable telluric drive, one can recall the remarkable resemblance of its final bars to the last pages of Malambo that rounds off the Estancia ballet suite by Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983). Here we find the best of musical nationalism, closely linked with the earth and its oldest sounds.

Among the first (of many) famous international conductors who soon took up Chávez’s Sinfonía india, special mention should be made of Leopold Stokowski, who wrote a letter to the composer asking for the score only five months after the work’s premiere. It can be said without exaggeration that Chávez’s Sinfonía india is the best known and appreciated Mexican symphonic work in the United States. © Juan Arturo Brennan, 2019

Carlos Miguel Prieto Conductor

Musical America’s 2019 Conductor of the Year, Carlos Miguel Prieto is known for his charismatic conducting and dynamic, expressive interpretations, which have led to major engagements and popular acclaim throughout North America, Europe and beyond.

A passionate proponent of music education, Prieto has served as Principal Conductor of The Orchestra of the Americas from its inception in 2002, and was named Music Director in 2011. Prieto also works with Carnegie Hall’s NYO2, leading musicians aged 14–17 from across the United States.

A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School, Prieto is a highly influential cultural leader as well as the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He has been Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico since 2007. In 2008, he was

appointed Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. Having conducted over 100 world premieres of works by Mexican and American composers, Prieto is renowned for championing and commissioning the music of Latin American composers.

Since 2006, Prieto has been Music Director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. On 27 February 2018, he led the orchestra in its Carnegie Hall debut in a concert celebrating the eightieth birthday of Philip Glass. Prieto has also conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the Hallé, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa.

Prieto’s recordings include works by Bruch, Beethoven and Mendelssohn with violinist Philippe Quint and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería (Avanticlassic), and Korngold’s Violin Concerto, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards (Naxos).

In April 2018, Prieto was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music

by Loyola University New Orleans.

Hay una lógica impecable en reunir a Aaron Copland (1900– 1990) y Carlos Chávez (1899–1978) en un disco. Ambos fueron figuras importantes en establecer y solidificar, en sus respectivos ámbitos, un lenguaje musical de claros tintes nacionales y, a la vez, matizado por una inconfundible modernidad. Por otra parte, después de dejar una importante huella con sus obras de claro sabor nacional, Copland y Chávez transitaron en la última etapa de su vida creativa hacia una expresión más abstracta y universal. Y, no menos importante, tuvieron una relación cercana que, más allá de su dimensión personal, sirvió como un importante enlace para promover la música mexicana en los Estados Unidos y la música estadunidense en México. Del perfil de esa relación personal y

profesional da cuenta la copiosa correspondencia que sostuvieron a lo largo de los años, que figura de manera destacada en el Epistolario selecto de Carlos Chávez, compilado por Gloria Carmona y publicado en la Ciudad de México por el Fondo de Cultura Económica en 1989. Así como Chávez dirigió en la Ciudad de México el estreno absoluto de algunas obras de Copland (El Salón México, la Segunda sinfonía), Copland promovió en los Estados Unidos la música de su colega y amigo, dirigiendo varias de las obras orquestales más importantes de Chávez.

Hay momentos musicales tan impactantes que, después de ser experimentados por primera vez, no se olvidan jamás. En la Tercera sinfonía de Copland hay uno de esos momentos inolvidables. Después del tercer movimiento, el cuarto se inicia sin pausa o interrupción, con una suave y misteriosa versión de una conocida melodía en flautas y clarinetes, pianissimo. De pronto, la melodía modula hacia una tonalidad lejana y estalla esplendorosa en los metales y la percusión; se trata de los primeros compases de la Fanfarria para el hombre común (1942), del propio Copland, quien al incluirla en esta transición sinfónica logró uno de los momentos musicales más emotivos de su catálogo.

Al inicio de la década de los 1940s, algunos amigos de Copland (Elliott Carter, David Diamond, Arthur Berger) insistieron en la necesidad de que el compositor escribiera una obra orquestal de gran calibre; incluso Samuel Barber le escribió al respecto, desde Italia. En ese tiempo, Copland había estado reuniendo temas e ideas que pensaba incluir en una nueva sinfonía. La oportunidad cristalizó en 1943: la Fundación Koussevitzki

encargó a Copland una obra, y fue así como comenzó a tomar forma la Tercera sinfonía. Copland inició la creación de la obra en agosto de 1944, en México, y la sinfonía quedó terminada en septiembre de 1946, apenas a tiempo para su estreno. El propio Copland escribió algunas notas, de carácter fundamentalmente técnico, para la primera ejecución de su Tercera sinfonía. Más tarde, en otros textos, aportó datos interesantes sobre ésta, la más extensa y ambiciosa de sus obras orquestales. Por ejemplo, Copland decía esto: Hay que recalcar algo sobre mi Tercera sinfonía: no contiene ninguna referencia folklórica o popular. Cualquier referencia a material folklórico o de jazz es pura coincidencia. Sin embargo, utilizo mi propia música, de la Fanfarria para el hombre común, en una forma expandida y aumentada en el último movimiento.

Utilicé esta oportunidad de llevar más lejos el material de la fanfarria para satisfacer mi deseo de darle a la sinfonía un tono afirmativo. Después de todo, es una pieza de guerra, o mejor dicho, una pieza de fin de guerra. Es una partitura ambiciosa, comparada a veces con Mahler y Shostakovich, y en ocasiones con Prokofiev, en especial el segundo movimiento. Como gran admirador de Mahler, mi música a veces muestra su influencia, pero nunca estuve consciente de alguna otra influencia mientras compuse la obra.

La Sinfonía No. 3 de Copland es quizá su obra más importante, y es ciertamente un buen muestrario de los elementos musicales más típicos de la producción del compositor, hábilmente sintetizados en la partitura; 19

aquí está el aliento de su música para cine y teatro, el toque popular, la música de corte abstracto, el perfil típicamente estadu­nidense de algunas melodías, vagas referencias a himnos religiosos y danzas campiranas.

Con todos estos elementos y un desarrollo estructural de cimientos tradicionales, Copland logró una obra expansiva, de gran poder y, sobre todo, muy típica de su pensamiento musical. La obra fue estrenada el 18 de octubre de 1946 por Serge Koussevitzki dirigiendo la Orquesta Sinfónica de Boston. El propio director calificó la obra, después del estreno, como la más importante sinfonía estadunidense escrita hasta ese momento. La partitura, por cierto, lleva una dedicatoria a la esposa del director: “A la memoria de mi querida amiga Natalie Koussevitzki”.

Es importante aclarar que la inclusión de la Fanfarria para el hombre común en la Tercera sinfonía no es un simple ejercicio de vanidad por parte de Copland; resulta que los dos primeros intervalos del tema inicial de la fanfarria (una cuarta y una quinta ascendentes) dominan con claridad todo el material temático de la sinfonía. Así pues, esa espectacular y emotiva aparición de la fanfarria en la sinfonía no sólo impacta al que escucha, sino que también unifica el discurso sonoro de la obra. Como tantas otras partituras a lo largo de la historia, ésta ha tenido intérpretes particularmente intuitivos y comprometidos con el espíritu de la música, como lo demuestran estas palabras de Copland: El director que siempre ha entendido mi música con mayor intuición es Leonard Bernstein. Su forma de dirigir la Tercera sinfonía es lo más cercano a lo que yo tenía en mente cuando la compuse.

Cabe señalar que, estrictamente, esta obra es la Cuarta sinfonía de Copland, si se toma en cuenta la Dance symphony de 1925.

De un modo más o menos simple, puede decirse que la Sinfonía india de Carlos Chávez toma su peculiar carácter sonoro de la combinación de tres elementos fundamentales, plenamente interdependientes entre sí: las melodías indígenas originales, la complejidad rítmica, y el empleo de ciertos instrumentos prehispánicos de percusión. En cuanto a las melodías autóctonas, hay que mencionar que no fue ésta la única obra en la que Chávez acudió a tales fuentes musicales; en partituras como Los cuatro soles y El fuego nuevo, las melodías indígenas están presentes también. El compositor afirmó que esa era la primera música que había oído, y que era la que más había nutrido su gusto y su sentido musical. En particular, la Sinfonía india tiene como materia prima tres melodías surgidas de otros tantos grupos étnicos mexicanos: los seris y los yaquis de Sonora, y los huicholes de Nayarit. Respecto a la complejidad rítmica de la Sinfonía india, es claro que nace, en parte, del respeto que Chávez tuvo por los patrones rítmicos de las melodías que utilizó. Así, un vistazo a la partitura de la obra nos permite apreciar, tan sólo en las cinco primeras páginas, los siguientes cambios métricos: 85, 42, 85, 42, 85, 43, 85, 43, 85, 42, 85, 42, 85. El resto de la obra progresa sobre un esquema rítmico tan irregular como el del inicio ya que más adelante, Chávez plantea otras combinaciones de estos patrones rítmicos con pulsos de 87, 23 y 22. De la combinación de todos estos patrones rítmicos emerge un impulso motor que es sin duda uno de los más grandes aciertos de todo el repertorio sinfónico mexicano. Dentro del ámbito rítmico de la obra cabe señalar también que, como contraste

con el inicio tan irregular, el final de la Sinfonía india, pujante e inexorable como pocos, está construido sobre un largo episodio de ritmo constante.

En el número 88 de la partitura, donde Chávez hace la indicación de Poco più vivo, sempre giusto (“Un poco más vivo, siempre justo”), se inicia la coda de la sinfonía, construida en 126 compases de ritmo inalterable de 68.

En este brillante episodio los metales llevan una parte de capital importancia, en especial los trombones, cuyos breves pero poderosos glissandi dan una soberbia pincelada de energía al final de la sinfonía.

En la instrumentación de la sinfonía hallamos, por otra parte, una serie de instrumentos indígenas de percusión que, en ausencia de los originales, pueden ser sustituidos por sus equivalentes contemporáneos: tambor indio, tlalpanhuéhuetl, jícara de agua, güiro, maracas, sonaja de arcilla, sonaja de metal, raspador, tenábaris, teponaztli. Y acompañando a este instrumental indígena, los instrumentos de percusión orquestal más convencionales: timbales, tambor tenor, platillos, xilófono, claves.

En el invierno de 1935–1936, Chávez realizó una de sus múltiples visitas a los Estados Unidos, y de una invitación a dirigir un concierto para el Columbia Broadcasting System nació la Sinfonía india. La obra fue compuesta en Nueva York entre el fin de 1935 y el principio de 1936 y fue estrenada por el propio Chávez con la Orquesta de la CBS, el 23 de enero de 1936. Poco tiempo después, los días 10 y 11 de abril de ese mismo año, Chávez dirigió su Sinfonía india con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Boston. La obra fue estrenada en México el 31 de julio de 1936, también bajo la batuta de Chávez, en uno de los conciertos de la temporada de la Orquesta Sinfónica de México, y se repitió el 18 de septiembre de ese mismo año.

Para documentar el innegable impulso telúrico de esta Sinfonía india no está de más señalar la asombrosa semejanza de sus compases finales con las últimas páginas del Malambo con que concluye la suite del ballet Estancia del compositor argentino Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983).

He aquí lo mejor del nacionalismo musical vinculado directamente con la tierra y con sus sonidos más antiguos.

Entre los primeros (de muchos) directores de prestigio internacional que pronto se interesaron en la Sinfonía india de Chávez destaca Leopold Stokowski, quien apenas cinco meses después del estreno escribió una carta al compositor solicitándole la partitura.
