La collaboration fructueuse entamée entre Outhere Music et la Chapelle Musicale il y a dix ans se poursuit avec un très beau projet d’envergure autour des œuvres de musique de chambre à clavier de Dvořák.

Cette ambitieuse intégrale Dvořák est consacrée à l’ensemble de son œuvre de trios, quatuors et quintettes à clavier. Elle clôture deux ans de préparation intense et d’enregistrement des neuf œuvres de musique de chambre par le Trio Busch, accompagné, pour les quatuors et quintettes, par Miguel da Silva, ex-altiste du quatuor Ysaÿe de 1984 à 2014 et maître en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale et par la violoniste Maria Milstein, artiste associée à la Chapelle Musicale.

Ce projet ambitieux a vu le jour grâce à la présence d’une formation très talentueuse, le Trio Busch, en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale dans la section de musique de chambre, de 2014 à 2017. Ce trio a tout de suite convaincu le Quatuor Artemis par sa qualité de jeu et son approche à la musique très rigoureuse.

La rencontre du trio avec l’altiste Miguel da Silva a inspiré une série de projets de musique de chambre. Leur alchimie sur scène a séduit immédiatement et a conduit à ce projet ambitieux d’enregistrement. « De l’idée de rencontre entre le Trio Busch et moi-même : La rencontre entre des artistes est fréquente, elle participe de leur métier même. C’est bien souvent une rencontre aléatoire, mystérieuse, irrésistible qui façonne notre vie et la transforme en destin. » « De cet enregistrement des quatuors et des quintettes, je n’ai rien de plus à part la grande fierté d’avoir enregistré avec les Busch ! C’est magnifique de réalisation, de construction, de culture & de sensibilité. » Miguel da Silva Le Trio Busch est composé de très belles personnalités musicales enrichies d’une expérience déjà conséquente en tant que solistes.

Cette intégrale est d’une qualité musicale qui restera une archive importante de ces artistes et une référence dans ce répertoire. Par ailleurs, cette intégrale a aussi fait l’objet d’une captation filmée en concerts en juin 2018.

La Chapelle Musicale est très heureuse d’avoir été associée à ce beau projet avec son partenaire Outhere (Label Alpha).

ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Trio à clavier n°3 en fa mineur, op. 65 Sur les six trios avec piano que composa Dvořák, seuls quatre ont survécu. Il en détruisit deux, probablement écrits en 1871 ou 1872, mais pas avant que l’Adagio de l’un d’eux n’ait été donné à Prague le 5 juillet 1872. Les autres occupent une place importante dans l’œuvre de Dvořák – chacun se situe à un carrefour important de son évolution comme compositeur, donnant une image claire de son style à ce moment particulier.

Le Trio en fa mineur op.65, de 1883, signale de nouvelles orientations dans le style de Dvořák.

Au cours de la décennie précédente, dans sa Bohême natale, il s’était fait une solide réputation, fondée en grande partie sur l’opéra. Ses Duos moraves et le premier recueil de Danses slaves avaient fait connaître son nom dans toute l’Europe à la fin des années 1870, ce qui conduisit, dans les années 1880, à un déluge d’invitations à écrire de nouvelles œuvres, venant de l’étranger, en particulier d’Angleterre. Inévitablement, on pressait Dvořák de dompter ses instincts naturels et de s’assurer qu’ils se rapprochent davantage du langage musical austro-allemand de son ami et mentor Brahms.

De Vienne, on avait tendance à lui conseiller de s’éloigner d’un style musical direct, avec des inflexions nationales apparentes, au profit de quelque chose de plus manifestement brahmsien. À première vue, Dvořák semblait prêt à se plier à ces demandes avec son Trio en fa mineur. Il composa l’œuvre rapidement, sinon sans difficulté, en février et mars 1883. Son manuscrit montre qu’il eut du mal à décider de la forme finale de la partition, et la version publiée diffère substantiellement du premier brouillon ; il y fit de nombreux changements, modifiant entre autres l’ordre des mouvements médians.

La création en fut donnée le 27 octobre 1883 à Mladá Boleslav en Bohême, avec Dvořák au piano – la première audition à Prague suivit deux semaines plus tard, le 13 novembre.

La manière brahmsienne est parfois apparente dans la rhétorique musicale, et l’exemple du compositeur plus âgé pourrait également avoir inspiré la nature agitée du matériau secondaire dans le premier mouvement, endroit où Dvořák écrit normalement une mélodie plus soutenue. L’œuvre pourrait aussi être redevable à une composition non viennoise : le Trio en fa mineur (1872) du compositeur tchèque Zdeněk Fibich, dont l’idée initiale est étonnamment proche de celle de Dvořák. Mais l’essentiel de 10

l’œuvre est entièrement typique de Dvořák : le ton puissant, qui évoque clairement la manière tragique, fut peut-être suscité par sa situation personnelle, puisque sa mère était décédée deux mois avant qu’il ne commence le trio.

L’urgence du début du premier mouvement est présente tout du long, même dans les thèmes secondaires plus retenus. Comme repoussoir pour l’énergie vigoureuse de l’Allegro ma non troppo, Dvořák écrit un intermezzo plutôt qu’un scherzo véritable : la mélodie principale revêt un caractère mélancolique, tandis que sa section centrale apporte le premier moment de lyrisme détendu dans l’œuvre. Le mouvement lent, avec sa mélodie éloquente, presque vocale, pour le violoncelle, revient au style grandiose du premier mouvement. L’Allegro con brio conclusif est l’un des finales les plus réussis de Dvořák à cette époque. Les décalages rythmiques de ce finale pourraient évoquer le furiant tchèque, mais l’impression prédominante est une activité abstraite et agitée. S’il y a des inflexions populaires, elles se trouvent dans le second thème en manière de valse. La résolution de toute cette activité vient avec une sombre et magnifique référence au thème initial du premier mouvement, avant qu’un moment de douce nostalgie ne soit balayé par une course rapide jusqu’à la cadence.

Trio à clavier n°4 en mi mineur, op. 90, « Dumky » En janvier 1892, Dvořák proposa à son éditeur, Simrock, cinq œuvres récemment achevées. Parmi elles se trouvaient six Dumkas pour trio avec piano, qui, selon le compositeur, étaient « en style de musique de chambre ». Dans une correspondance ultérieure avec Simrock, Dvořák parlait généralement des Dumkas comme d’un trio avec piano, mais en les composant en 1890 il était loin d’être sûr de la désignation finale : En ce moment je travaille sur quelque chose de petit, et même très petit […]. De petites pièces pour violon, violoncelle et piano. L’œuvre sera à la fois heureuse et triste ! En certains endroits comme un chant méditatif, en d’autres une danse joyeuse.

La description de Dvořák, faite à son bon ami Alois Göbl, non seulement est juste pour ce qui est du contenu émotionnel de l’œuvre, mais résume succinctement l’idée qu’avait le compositeur lui-même de ce qu’était une dumka. S’il avait écrit des dumkas dans divers contextes, il n’avait jamais tenté d’en 11

« … LES MÉLODIES DÉFERLAIENT SUR MOI » LES QUATUORS AVEC PIANO DE DVOŘÁK Les deux quatuors avec piano de Dvořák datent de périodes très différentes de sa carrière de créateur.

Le premier, composé en 1875, remonte à l’année où il obtint de l’État autrichien une bourse réservée aux artistes pauvres. Celle-ci lui permit de se consacrer entièrement à la composition, et les fruits en furent impressionnants : mis à part son Premier Quatuor avec piano, Dvořák composa cette année-là la Sérénade pour cordes en mi majeur, plusieurs de ses célèbres Duos moraves, la Cinquième Symphonie en fa majeur ainsi qu’un grand opéra en cinq actes, Vanda. En revanche, le Deuxième Quatuor avec piano, écrit quatorze ans plus tard, date d’une époque où il était devenu l’idole de l’Europe, suscitant partout commandes et attention.

Tout au long des années 1860, Dvořák était avant tout connu comme altiste d’orchestre ; mais au début des années 1870 il commença à émerger comme aspirant compositeur. En juillet 1871, il démissionna de l’orchestre du Théâtre provisoire de Prague, institution qui donnait des pièces et des opéras en tchèque ; peu de temps après, il se mit à participer à des soirées de musique de chambre dans la demeure d’un grand industriel, le baron Josef von Portheim. Ses liens avec divers salons pragois lui donnèrent l’occasion de composer de la musique de chambre, et tout d’abord un Quintette avec piano (la majeur, op. 5, B. 28) en 1872, puis en 1875 le Quatuor avec piano en ré majeur.

La créativité libérée par l’obtention de cette bourse était sans précédent dans la carrière de Dvořák, et il composa à une allure étonnante, achevant le Quatuor en à peine plus de quinze jours entre le 24 mai et le 10 juin, juste après la Sérénade pour cordes, bien qu’il ait dû attendre plus de cinq ans sa création, donnée à Prague le 16 décembre 1880. Le Quatuor avec piano partage les généreuses qualités mélodiques de la Sérénade, notamment dans le thème initial du premier mouvement, accompagné d’une pulsation régulière. Mais, dans l’ensemble, le premier mouvement tend à être pensif, parfois agité, ce qui conduit à un développement de thèmes à la fois lyrique et intense. Dvořák fait plein usage

composer une série faite pour être entendue dans son ensemble. La similitude extérieure de forme de chaque mouvement – une alternance de tempi lents et vifs, qui pourrait venir de la ballade populaire ukrainienne du même nom – aurait pu résulter en une certaine monotonie sans la variété mélodique de Dvořák, son habile construction et la superbe utilisation des instruments.

Le début de la première Dumka est un vigoureux appel à l’attention. La pièce n’est pas un premier mouvement conventionnel, mais, combinée avec la deuxième Dumka, avec laquelle elle s’enchaîne sans guère d’interruption, elle en satisfait bon nombre d’exigences. L’alternance détermine la structure des deux, et, bien que Dvořák développe des thèmes, c’est la répétition rehaussée par l’ornementation et l’instrumentation habile qui domine. La troisième pièce, de forme ternaire claire, est la plus simple : après un prélude radieux, la main droite du pianiste devient le soliste avec une mélodie de caractère presque vocal – peut-être le « chant méditatif » évoqué plus haut. L’allure de marche de la quatrième Dumka est interrompu deux fois par un capricieux Allegretto scherzando. Une troisième interruption conduit à un Allegro enjoué, avant que la musique ne revienne à la démarche plus mesurée de l’Andante moderato initial, qui s’estompe ensuite tel un rêve au loin. Les accords hardis qui ouvrent la cinquième Dumka annoncent un mouvement qui, malgré sa grâce et sa légèreté, est le plus concentré de l’œuvre. Recourant aux procédés du canon et de la diminution, Dvořák poursuit son thème avec une détermination beethovénienne. La dernière Dumka est la plus sérieuse et la plus dramatique des six.

Un Lento hautement expressif alterne avec un féroce Vivace. L’atmosphère est très tendue, avec un tremolo dans la partie de violoncelle et, pour le piano, des passages proches du récitatif qui créent des moments de grande tension.

Malgré leur nouveauté, les Dumkas de Dvořák occupent une place solide au répertoire, témoignant du grand succès d’une œuvre que même le compositeur considérait comme expérimentale. Ses couleurs instrumentales constamment changeantes et son registre émotionnel lui ont assuré sa popularité depuis sa création, le 11 mars 1891, avec Dvořák lui-même au piano.

L’Andantino central est une série de cinq variations avec coda fondée sur une mélodie expressive en si mineur. C’est une préfiguration évidente du style dumka de Dvořák, dans lequel des interludes plus légers forment un contraste avec un climat essentiellement mélancolique. Comme dans le premier mouvement, la richesse des textures instrumentales est irrésistible, et le puissant élan rythmique débouche sur une coda étonnamment passionnée, avant une fin exquise toute en demi-teintes.

Le dernier mouvement a des allures d’expérience hardie, combinant des éléments à la fois de scherzo et de finale. Un début en douceur, une fois encore emmené par le violoncelle, engendre bientôt les décalages rythmiques nerveux du furiant tchèque et conduit à un développement énergique qui fait dresser l’oreille. Les résultats sont incontestablement frappants, même si la conclusion est un peu capricieuse.

Dvořák écrivit le Quatuor avec piano en mi bémol majeur sur les instances de Fritz Simrock, son éditeur berlinois. Simrock, qui lui réclamait un quatuor avec piano depuis 1885, relança le compositeur en 1887 et 1888, prétendant que le compositeur lui avait « promis depuis longtemps » une telle œuvre. Dvořák commença finalement à composer le Quatuor à la mi-juillet et acheva le finale le 19 août. La création en fut donnée à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 17 octobre 1890 ; une exécution à Munich quelques semaines plus tard, le 12 novembre 1890, incita un professeur de conservatoire à écrire au compositeur pour l’informer que « les critiques et le public étaient unanimes dans leurs louanges ».

Bien que le Quatuor avec piano en mi bémol majeur n’ait jamais atteint l’immense popularité du Deuxième Quintette avec piano (op. 81, B. 155), composé deux années auparavant, il est tout aussi direct, et d’un lyrisme aussi engageant. Il y a toutefois des différences dans la manière dont l’argumentation est exposée. À la différence du Quintette, le début du Quatuor est presque brusque, avec les cordes qui présentent le premier thème à l’unisson, suivi d’une réponse en accords du piano.

Ceci conduit à un vigoureux énoncé du thème principal, qui introduit un mouvement à l’argumentation puissante et aux vastes modulations.

Si le climat du Quatuor dans son ensemble est positif et énergique, il en émerge parfois un courant sous-jacent de tragédie dans l’expression musicale de l’œuvre, qui culmine dans le mouvement lent.

Le début de ce Lento d’une grande portée est d’une apparente sérénité, caractérisé par un thème gracieux pour le violoncelle. Au moment où ce premier énoncé arrive à son terme, la musique plonge vers une section passionnée, riche en rhétorique tragique, avant que la sérénité ne soit rétablie avec une nouvelle mélodie. Dans cet extraordinaire mouvement, ces saisissants changements d’affect préfigurent à la fois l’Adagio de la Huitième Symphonie (op. 88, B. 163) et de nombreuses pages du Trio « Dumky » (op. 90, B. 166). Étrangement, le scherzo débute par un geste introductif clair avant de faire entendre un élégant premier thème, presque comme une valse. Dans cette section initiale, les cordes mènent, tandis que le piano fournit un accompagnement qui évoque parfois le cymbalum. La séduisante langueur de la section initiale est opposée à un trio plus énergique, avec des échanges en canon animés entre le violon et l’alto.

Le finale débute avec un puissant énoncé à l’unisson en mode mineur, mais plonge bientôt vers une mélodie positive en majeur. Dans une lettre à un ami proche, Alois Göbl, Dvořák s’enthousiasmait à propos de son travail sur le Quatuor, disant que la composition se faisait facilement et que les mélodies « déferlaient sur moi ». Ses commentaires semblent particulièrement justes en ce qui concerne ce dernier mouvement. Sans jamais perdre de vue l’argumentation musicale, Dvořák conçoit des mélodies les unes après les autres, dont l’une des plus mémorables est présentée par l’alto, marquée molto espressivo, dans la tonalité éloignée de si majeur. Le développement des thèmes explore aussi des tonalités éloignées et des harmonies expérimentales, avant une joyeuse explosion dans la tonalité de mi bémol majeur qui amène cette œuvre remarquable à sa conclusion.

aussi de la combinaison instrumentale : c’est le violoncelle qui introduit le premier thème, et ajoute ensuite au piano une couleur harmonique douce et délicate pour la deuxième mélodie principale.

LES QUINTETTES AVEC PIANO DE DVOŘÁK : APPRENTISSAGE ET MATURITÉ Le tournant décisif dans la carrière du jeune Dvořák fut le succès spectaculaire de la création de sa cantate patriotique Les Héritiers de la montagne blanche, à Prague en 1873. Mais depuis le début des années 1870, il s’affirmait comme compositeur, après une décennie pendant laquelle il s’était surtout fait connaître comme altiste solide et pilier de l’orchestre lyrique du théâtre tchèque de Prague. Dans les années 1860, ses travaux d’aspirant compositeur, qu’il garda presque entièrement pour lui, étaient atypiques parmi ses contemporains tchèques : deux symphonies de grande envergure, un cycle de mélodies et quelques quatuors à cordes très expérimentaux.

Les premiers signes d’une modération dans le style de Dvořák vinrent avec des mélodies et des œuvres de petites dimensions destinées aux salons de Prague, en particulier celui de Ludevít Procházka, pianiste amateur passionné, et de son épouse, la cantatrice lyrique Marta Reissingerová. C’est de cette époque que date son Premier Quintette avec piano en la majeur, composé à la fin de l’été de 1872.

Le quintette aurait pu être perdu pour la postérité, puisqu’il semble que Dvořák ait déchiré et brûlé son manuscrit. Procházka en avait toutefois fait une copie, qui permit à l’œuvre de survivre au jugement impétueux et irréfléchi du compositeur.

que le mouvement se termine un peu abruptement, mais le compositeur lui donna néanmoins une digne conclusion héroïque.

L’intense Andante sostenuto, soutenu de manière imposante, est fondé sur un thème principal d’une noblesse beethovénienne. Après une section centrale agitée, le mouvement se conclut dans une tranquillité magique. Avec un contraste marqué, le finale débute de manière turbulente par un thème principal hardi. Peut-être pour compenser l’absence de troisième mouvement, Dvořák y intègre des éléments de scherzo. Dans son ensemble, malgré le manque d’expérience, ce quintette de jeunesse est d’une assurance remarquable.

Alors qu’il passait en revue ses œuvres antérieures, comme il faisait périodiquement, Dvořák se souvint de son quintette de jeunesse et demanda à Procházka son exemplaire de l’œuvre. Après avoir fait des coupures dans les trois mouvements, Dvořák ne se sentit néanmoins pas à même de le proposer à son éditeur, Simrock (la création de la version révisée n’eut lieu qu’en 1922, dix-huit ans après la mort du compositeur). Mais, comme c’était souvent le cas chez Dvořák, la réflexion sur une œuvre conduisit à la composition d’une autre dans la même forme. Il lutta avec le Premier Quintette pendant cinq mois avant de conclure qu’il n’était pas viable. Mais ces efforts libérèrent de nouvelles énergies créatrices, et il acheva un nouveau quintette en l’espace d’un peu plus de six semaines seulement, entre la mi-août et le début d’octobre 1887.

Le quintette garde un peu du caractère discursif de ses œuvres antérieures, comme le nota l’un des critiques lors de la création ; mais l’assurance avec laquelle Dvořák traite la combinaison piano et cordes (d’autant plus impressionnante qu’il ne possédait pas de piano à cette époque) est incontestable ; en bien des endroits, la partition préfigure le célèbre Deuxième Quintette avec piano. Inéluctablement, à ce stade de sa carrière, les influences sont manifestes : Liszt dans le thème initial du premier mouvement, et peut-être Schubert dans la deuxième mélodie principale. Mais dans l’ensemble le discours musical est d’une grande clarté, renforcée ensuite par les révisions que Dvořák fit en 1887, dont une coupure de quelque 150 mesures ; sa décision ultérieure d’omettre le second thème dans la réexposition signifie

Dvořák composa son Deuxième Quintette avec piano alors qu’il approchait du faîte de sa renommée internationale ; l’œuvre bénéficia aussi de ce qu’elle fut conçue dans le cadre agréable de sa retraite campagnarde, Vysoka. La création en fut donnée le 8 janvier 1888 à Prague, avec quatre des meilleurs instrumentistes à cordes tchèques de l’époque, et le prometteur chef d’orchestre et compositeur Karel Kovařovic au piano.

Clarté de conception et lyrisme captivant sont deux caractéristiques marquantes du quintette, et la réussite de Dvořák dans l’alliance de la richesse de ses dons mélodiques et d’une maîtrise infaillible de la forme classique est remarquable. Le mouvement lent, intitulé Dumka, alterne les sections lentes et plus rapides, et forme le cœur lyrique de l’œuvre. En réalité, les contrastes ne sont pas particulièrement marqués, la section « rapide » sensuelle (Un pochettino più mosso) avançant à une allure à peine plus vive que le début mélancolique (Andante con moto). Le contraste est plus accusé dans la section centrale, Vivace, qui s’empare de la mélodie initiale du mouvement pour bâtir une captivante gradation. Le brillant scherzo est une valse rapide combinée aux rythmes nerveux du furiant tchèque. Le trio comprend une délicate succession d’accords ornés et entremêlés d’allusions rêveuses à la mélodie principale du scherzo.

Dans le finale, magnifiquement soutenu, Dvořák préserve l’élan en laissant à ses thèmes une fin ouverte : chacun conduit au suivant avec une éloquente inéluctabilité. Rien ne se perd, et même les accords enjoués du début sont utilisés dans le développement avec un bel effet. Au terme de beaucoup de joyeuse activité, l’allure précipitée de la musique ralentit avec une série magique d’accords. Après ce repos, le tempo s’accélère et le quintette se conclut avec de brillantes figures pentatoniques qui préfigurent la manière « américaine » de Dvořák.

L’harmonium était un instrument à clavier domestique très répandu dans la Prague de la fin du XIXe siècle. Un ami du compositeur, Josef Srb-Debrnov, avec qui il participait à des soirées de musique de chambre, en possédait un, et c’est pour ces occasions en 1878 que Dvořák écrivit les Bagatelles.

Composées au même moment que le premier recueil de Danses slaves, les Bagatelles en partagent les accents nationaux. La mémorable mélodie initiale du premier mouvement, qui se déploie au-dessus du violoncelle pizzicato et du bourdon sourd de l’harmonium, non seulement fournit du matériau pour cet Allegretto scherzando, mais revient dans le capricieux troisième mouvement et le finale. Le deuxième mouvement est un élégant menuet, et le quatrième un canon rigoureux, mais d’un doux lyrisme.

LES DÉBUTS MARQUANTS D’ UNE CARRIÈRE REMARQUABLE : LES DEUX PREMIERS TRIOS AVEC PIANO D’ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK Le destin d’un compositeur ayant écrit quelques œuvres pour lesquelles la postérité s’est prise d’affection lui vaut parfois de voir une grande partie du reste de sa musique sombrer dans l’oubli.

L’immense popularité d’une poignée d’œuvres comme la Symphonie « du Nouveau Monde », le Concerto pour violoncelle en si mineur, le Quatuor « Américain » et le grand Quintette avec piano en la majeur a fait que pendant de longues années, Dvořák est resté un compositeur « méconnu ». Son vaste catalogue, qui comprend onze opéras, des mélodies, des cantates et des oratorios ainsi que des symphonies et des concertos, de la musique de chambre et pour piano, montre que Dvořák était une personnalité musicale complexe, sensible aux évolutions contemporaines et tout à fait capable d’affirmer clairement son identité musicale à travers un certain nombre de genres.

Au total, Dvořák semble avoir écrit six trios avec piano, bien qu’il n’en subsiste que quatre. Deux, probablement composés en 1871 ou 1872, ont été détruits, mais pas avant que l’Adagio de l’un d’eux n’ait été exécuté lors d’un concert à Prague le 5 juillet 1872. Le Trio op. 21, le premier à avoir survécu, nous livre un aperçu fascinant de Dvořák à un tournant significatif de sa carrière. Composé au printemps de 1875, ce trio appartient à une période au cours de laquelle il forgeait et consolidait une vision plus conventionnelle de la forme et du style musical. À la fin des années 1860 et au début des années 1870, il s’était livré à de nombreuses expériences musicales débridées. Dans le substantiel développement, Dvořák utilise tous ses thèmes, mais donne une place de choix à la mélodie initiale, qu’il soumet à des transformations d’une subtilité caractéristique.

L’assurance de l’écriture dans le Trio avec piano en si bémol majeur est aussitôt apparente : sur un accompagnement frémissant du piano, le premier violon déploie un séduisant thème pentatonique qui renvoie à la fois en arrière au premier Quatuor à cordes de Dvořák (1862) et en avant au début de son Quatuor « Américain » de 1893. Le piano met bientôt un terme à ce début nonchalant avec quelques accords abrupts qui conduisent ensuite à un attrayant second thème. Dvořák se montre habile en préservant l’équilibre entre les éléments plus détendus et les gestes musicaux plus vifs tout au long de ce mouvement d’une tenue impressionnante.

L’Adagio molto e mesto est simple à la fois dans son contenu et ses contours. La mélodie mélancolique et sans affectation entendue au début a d’évidentes affinités avec celles des mouvements lents de la Dumka de la maturité du compositeur. Au lieu d’un robuste scherzo, Dvořák adopte un ton national, avec une polka en guise de troisième mouvement ; il pourrait y avoir été incité par son contemporain un peu plus jeune, Zdeněk Fibich, le premier à utiliser une polka en musique de chambre dans son Quatuor à cordes en la majeur de 1874. Mais, quel que soit le modèle, l’Allegretto scherzando de Dvořák est un mélange magnifiquement réussi de communicatif et d’insaisissable. Le finale commence dans un climat agité, avec des allusions aux tonalités mineures, avant de s’installer ensuite dans un

mode majeur plus confiant. Bien que la conclusion soit résolument optimiste, l’introduction dans le développement du thème principal du mouvement lent fait entendre un ton plus plaintif.

Lorsque Dvořák commença à travailler à son Trio avec piano en sol mineur le 4 janvier 1876, il était épuisé, puisqu’il venait d’achever son grand opéra en cinq actes, Vanda, et accablé de chagrin, car, juste après qu’il eut terminé le premier acte, sa fille Josefa était morte, âgée de deux jours seulement.

Il devait certainement savoir que Smetana, dans des circonstances analogues, s’était également tourné vers le genre du trio pour exprimer sa tristesse à la mort de sa fille Bedřiška en 1855. Bien qu’écrites dans la même tonalité, et peut-être proches dans leur inspiration, les deux œuvres sont très différentes – le trio de Dvořák est disposé plus classiquement en quatre mouvements sans liens entre eux, tandis que la partition de Smetana est en trois mouvements seulement et utilise délibérément les renvois thématiques. Le travail sur le trio avança rapidement, et il fut achevé dès le 20 janvier 1876.

Dvořák ouvre son trio avec un saisissant geste en accords, suivi d’une introduction « au tempo » – procédé qu’il avait commencé à développer dans son premier Quintette avec piano et qui lui servit jusque dans la Huitième Symphonie. La partie principale de l’Allegro moderato, fondée sur deux mélodies expressives, développe un fort sentiment de détermination et est de caractère constamment sombre. Le Largo, bien qu’écrit en mi bémol majeur, vire souvent vers les tonalités mineures – sa mélodie principale, pensive et mélancolique, a, comme celle du premier trio, quelque chose de la manière de la Dumka postérieure de Dvořák. Dans le Scherzo agile, Dvořák montre ses profondes affinités avec Beethoven (en particulier le scherzo du Quatuor à cordes op. 135), trait qui allait reparaître ensuite dans son Trio avec piano « Dumky » et son dernier Quatuor à cordes en sol majeur, op. 106.

La manière beethovénienne est également apparente dans le motif principal du finale, mais la personnalité en développement de Dvořák lui-même est fortement présente, ainsi que son optimisme fondamental, qui amène le trio, commencé dans des circonstances si sombres, à une conclusion positive dans un franc sol majeur.

Des signes d’un style musical plus abordable étaient apparus dès sa Troisième Symphonie (1873) mais le tournant décisif vint lorsque son opéra comique, Le Roi et le Charbonnier, fut mis en répétition à l’automne de la même année. La complexité de la partition et son style ouvertement wagnérien posèrent des problèmes insurmontables aux chanteurs, obligeant Dvořák à le retirer. Au cours des deux années suivantes, non seulement il recomposa l’opéra note pour note dans une veine beaucoup plus simple et plus manifestement populaire, mais il commença à développer une nouvelle vision du style. This ambitious Dvořák cycle is devoted to his complete trios, quartets and quintets with piano. It concludes two years of intense preparation and recording of these nine chamber works by the Busch Trio, accompanied in the quartets and quintets by Miguel da Silva, violist of the Quatuor Ysaÿe from 1984 to 2014 and professor in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, and the violinist Maria Milstein, associate artist at the Music Chapel.

This large-scale project came about thanks to the presence of a very talented group, the Busch Trio, in residence in the Chamber Music section of the Music Chapel from 2014 to 2017. Its members immediately captivated the Artemis Quartet with the quality of their playing and their exceptionally rigorous approach to music.

The trio’s meeting with violist Miguel da Silva inspired a series of chamber music projects. Their chemistry on stage immediately seduced audiences and led to this prestigious series of recordings.

‘On the notion of encounter between the Busch Trio and myself: encounters between artists are frequent, indeed are part of their very stock-in-trade. It is very often a random, mysterious, irresistible encounter that fashions our life and transforms it into destiny.’

Miguel da Silva The Busch Trio is composed of outstandingly appealing musical personalities enriched by an already substantial experience as solo artists.

The musical quality of this set means it will remain an important archive document for these artists and a benchmark in this repertory. Moreover, some of the performances were filmed live in concert in June 2018.

The Music Chapel is very proud to have been associated with this splendid project along with its partner Outhere (Alpha label).

ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Piano Trio no.3 in F minor, op.65 Of the six piano trios Dvořák composed, only four survive. Two, probably composed in 1871 or 1872, he destroyed, but not before the Adagio from one of them had been performed in Prague on 5 July 1872.

The remaining trios occupy places of significance in Dvořák’s output – each stands at an important juncture in his development as a composer, providing a clear image of his style at that particular time.

The F minor Trio op.65, dating from 1883, signals new directions in Dvořák’s style. In the previous decade, he had built a strong reputation in his native Bohemia, much of it founded on opera. His Moravian Duets and the first set of Slavonic Dances had taken his name across Europe in the late 1870s, which led in the 1880s to a flood of invitations for new works from abroad, especially England.

Inevitably, the pressure on Dvořák was to tame his natural instincts and tailor them to ensure a closer fit with the Austro-German vernacular of his friend and supporter Brahms. Advice from Vienna was inclined to nudge Dvořák away from a course of direct, apparently nationally-inflected musical style towards something more obviously Brahmsian.

At first sight the Trio in F minor looks as if Dvořák was willing to comply. He composed the work rapidly, if not without difficulty, in February and March 1883. His manuscript shows he had trouble in deciding on the final shape of the score, and the published version differs substantially from the first draft; he made numerous changes, including altering the order of the middle movements. The first performance was given on 27 October 1883 in Mladá Boleslav in Bohemia with Dvořák at the piano – the Prague premiere was held a fortnight later on 13 November.

The Brahmsian manner is apparent in the musical rhetoric on occasion, and the older composer’s example may also have prompted the restless nature of the secondary material in the first movement, a point at which Dvořák normally provided more sustained melody. There may also be a debt to a non-Viennese composition: the F minor Trio of 1872 by the Czech composer Zdeněk Fibich, whose opening idea is strikingly similar to Dvořák’s. But the majority of the work is entirely typical of Dvořák: its powerful tone, clearly evoking the tragic manner, was perhaps prompted by personal circumstances, since his mother had died two months before he began the trio.

The fruitful collaboration between Outhere Music and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel that began ten years ago continues with an exciting large-scale project focusing on Dvořák’s chamber music with keyboard.

Piano Trio no.4 in E minor, op.90 ‘Dumky’ In January 1892 Dvořák offered his publisher Simrock five recently completed works. Among them were six Dumkas for piano trio which, the composer added, were ‘in chamber music style’. In later correspondence with Simrock, Dvořák usually referred to the Dumkas as a piano trio, but while composing them in 1890 he was far from certain of a final designation: At the moment I am working on something small, indeed very small . . . little pieces for violin, cello and piano. The work will be both happy and sad! In some places like a meditative song, in others just like a joyful dance.

Dvořák’s description, made to his good friend Alois Göbl, is not only accurate with regard to the emotional content of the work, but sums up succinctly the composer’s own idea of what the dumka actually was. Although he had written dumkas in various contexts, he had never attempted to compose a series to be heard together. The outward similarity in form of each movement – an alternation of slow and fast tempi may derive from the eponymous Ukrainian folk ballad – might have resulted in monotony were it not for Dvořák’s melodic variety, deft construction and superb use of the instruments.

The opening of the first Dumka is a bold call to attention. The piece is not a conventional first movement, but, combined with the second Dumka, into which it runs with hardly a break, it fulfils many of the 30

‘... THE MELODIES JUST SURGED UPON ME’ DVOŘÁK’S PIANO QUARTETS Dvořák’s two piano quartets come from very different periods in his creative life. The first, composed in 1875, marks the year in which he won a grant in support of poor artists from the Austrian State.

This allowed him to devote himself to composition and the results were impressive: apart from his first piano quartet, 1875 saw Dvořák compose the famous E major string serenade, several of his popular Moravian Duets, the fifth symphony in F major as well as the five-act grand opera, Vanda. By contrast, the second piano quartet, written fourteen years later, comes from a time when he was the toast of Europe attracting commissions and attention far and wide.

requirements. Alternation determines the structure of both, and although Dvořák develops themes, repetition enhanced by ornament and skilful instrumentation dominate. The third piece, in clear ternary form, is the simplest: after a radiant prelude, the pianist’s right hand becomes the soloist with a melody of almost vocal character – perhaps the ‘meditative song’ mentioned above. The march-like tread of the fourth Dumka is twice interrupted by a skittish Allegretto scherzando. A third interruption leads to a playful Allegro before returning to the more measured gait of the initial Andante moderato, which then fades dreamily into the distance. The bold chords opening the fifth Dumka herald a movement which, for all its grace and lightness, is the most concentrated in the work. With the devices of canon and diminution, Dvořák pursues his theme with Beethovenian determination. The last Dumka is the most serious and dramatic of the six. A highly expressive Lento alternates with a fierce Vivace. The atmosphere is highly charged, with a tremolo in the cello part and recitative-like passages for piano producing moments of great tension.

For all their novelty, Dvořák’s Dumkas have a firm hold on the repertoire, indicating a high degree of success for a work that even the composer regarded as experimental. The constantly changing instrumental colours and the emotional range have ensured their popularity ever since the first performance on 11 March 1891, at which Dvořák played the piano.

The urgency of the opening of the first movement is present throughout, even in the more subdued secondary themes. As a foil to the driving energy of the Allegro ma non troppo, Dvořák provided an intermezzo, rather than a full-blown scherzo: the main melody has a wistful quality while its middle section provides the first stretch of relaxed lyricism in the work. The slow movement, with an eloquent, almost vocal melody for the cello, returns to the grand manner of the first movement. The concluding Allegro con brio is one of Dvořák’s most effective finales in this period. The cross-rhythms of this finale may evoke the Czech furiant, but the prevailing impression is one of abstract, restless activity. If folk inflection is to be found, it is in the waltz-like second theme. The resolution of all this activity comes with a magnificently dark reference to the opening theme of the first movement before a moment of sweet nostalgia is swept away by a brisk dash to the cadence.

Dvořák wrote the E flat major piano quartet at the prompting of Fritz Simrock, his Berlin publisher.

Simrock had been pressing for a piano quartet since 1885 and renewed his appeal to the composer in 1887 and 1888, claiming that the composer had ‘long promised’ such a work. Dvořák eventually began composing the quartet in mid-July and completed the finale on 19 August. The premiere took place in Frankfurt am Main on 17 October 1890; a slightly later German performance in Munich on 12 November 1890 prompted a conservatory professor to write to Dvořák informing him that ‘Critics and public were united in your praise’.

The creativity unleashed by the award of a grant was unprecedented in Dvořák’s career to date and he composed with astonishing speed, completing the piano quartet in barely more than a fortnight between 24 May and 10 June, hard on the heels of the string serenade - though it had to wait over five years for its premiere, given in Prague on 16 December 1880. The piano quartet shares the generous melodic qualities of the serenade, not least in the opening theme of the first movement with its pulsing accompaniment. But as a whole its first movement has a reflective, occasionally restless tendency which leads to a development of themes that is both lyrical and intense. Dvořák also makes full use of the instrumental combination: the cello takes the lead with the first theme and provides sweetly delicate harmonic shading to the piano in the second main melody.

Although the E flat major piano quartet has never achieved the huge popularity of the second piano quintet (op. 81, B 155) composed two years before, it is comparably direct and as winningly lyrical.

However, there are differences in the way in which the argument is delivered. By contrast with the quintet, the opening of the piano quartet is almost brusque with the strings presenting the first theme in unison followed by a chordal riposte from the piano. This leads into a bracing statement of the main theme which introduces a movement of powerful argument and wide-ranging modulation.

The central Andantino is a set of five variations and a coda based on an expressive melody in B minor. There is a clear anticipation of Dvořák’s ‘Dumka’ style in which lighter interludes contrast with a predominantly soulful manner. As in the first movement, there is a compelling richness to the instrumental textures and a strong sense of rhythmic impetus which results in a surprisingly passionate coda before an exquisite, understated close. There is an air of bold experiment in the concluding movement in which elements of both Scherzo and Finale are combined. A gentle opening, once again led by the cello, soon generates the excitable cross-rhythms of the Czech Furiant and leads to a strenuous, ear-catching development. The results are undoubtedly striking even if the conclusion is a touch whimsical.

While the demeanour of the piano quartet as a whole is positive and energetic, there emerges at times an undertow of tragedy in the musical expression of the work which is at its strongest in the slow movement. The opening of this broad-ranging Lento has an outward serenity characterized by a graceful theme for the cello. As this first statement draws to a close, the music plunges toward an impassioned section rich in tragic rhetoric before serenity is restored with a new melody. These startling changes of affect in this extraordinary movement anticipate both the Adagio of the eighth symphony (op. 88, B 163) and many parts of the Dumky Trio (op. 90, B 166).

Unusually, the scherzo begins with a clear introductory gesture before settling on an elegant, almost waltz-like, first theme. In this opening section, the strings take the lead while the piano provides an occasionally cimbalom-like accompaniment. The alluring languor of the opening section is set off by a more energetic trio with lively canonic interchanges between the violin and viola.

Through the 1860s, Dvořák was known primarily as an orchestral viola player, but in the early 1870s he began to emerge as an aspiring composer. In July 1871 he resigned from the orchestra of the Prague Provisional Theatre, an institution devoted to performing plays and opera in Czech; shortly after, he began to take part in evenings of chamber music at the home of the industrialist Baron Josef von Portheim. Connections with a range of salons in Prague led to the opportunity to compose chamber music among which was a first piano quintet (A major, op. 5, B 28) in 1872, and in 1875 the piano quartet in D major.

The quintet has something of the discursiveness of his earlier works, a point noted by a critic at the premiere, but there is no doubting the confidence with which Dvořák handles the combination of piano and strings (particularly impressive since he did not possess a piano at this stage in his career) which in many places anticipates the famous second piano quintet. Inevitably at this early stage in his career, there are clear influences: Liszt in the opening theme of the first movement and perhaps Schubert in the second main melody. But overall there is a clarity to the musical argument much enhanced by revisions Dvořák made in 1887, including a cut of some 150 bars; if his later decision to leave out the second theme in the recapitulation means the movement ends a touch abruptly, he nevertheless provides a suitably heroic conclusion.

DVOŘÁK’S PIANO QUINTETS: APPRENTICESHIP AND MATURITY

The intense, impressively sustained Andante sostenuto is based on a main melody of Beethovenian nobility. After a restless central section the movement comes to a magically tranquil close. In sharp contrast, the finale begins in agitated fashion with a bold main theme. Perhaps to make up for the lack of a third movement, Dvořák incorporates elements of scherzo style. As a whole, for all its callow nature, this early quintet is remarkably assured.

The decisive moment in Dvořák’s early career was the spectacularly successful premiere in Prague of his patriotic cantata, The Heirs of the White Mountain in 1873. Through the early 1870s he had been emerging as a composer after a decade in which he was known largely as a dependable viola player and a stalwart of the opera orchestra of Prague’s Czech theatre. As a composer in the 1860s Dvořák’s aspirations, which he kept almost entirely to himself, were atypical among his Czech contemporaries: two large-scale symphonies, a song-cycle and some highly experimental string quartets.

The first signs that Dvořák was moderating his style came in song settings and smaller-scale works geared to the salons of Prague, in particular that of Ludevít Procházka, an enthusiastic amateur pianist, and his wife, the opera singer Marta Reissingerová. From this time came his first piano quintet in A major composed in the late summer of 1872. The quintet might have been lost to posterity since it seems Dvořák tore up and burnt his manuscript. However, Procházka had made a copy and thus it survived the composer’s rashly impetuous judgement.

During one of his periodic reviews of earlier works, Dvořák remembered his early piano quintet and asked Prochazka for his copy of the work. Notwithstanding making cuts in all three movements, Dvořák did not feel able to offer it to his publisher, Simrock (the premiere of the revised version did not take place until 1922, eighteen years after his death). But as was often the case with Dvořák, the contemplation of one work led to the composition of another in the same form. He wrestled with the earlier quintet for five months before concluding that it was unviable. However, these efforts unleashed new creative energies and the new quintet was completed in just over six weeks, from the middle of August to the beginning of October 1887.

The second quintet was written as Dvořák approached the zenith of his international fame; it also benefitted from being composed in the congenial surroundings of his country retreat, Vysoka. The premiere was given on 8 January 1888 in Prague with four of the finest Czech string players of the day and the promising conductor and composer, Karel Kovaˇrovic, at the piano.

The finale begins with a strong unison statement in the minor key, but soon plunges toward a positive melodic statement in the major. In a letter to his close friend Alois Göbl, Dvořák enthused about his work on the quartet saying that composition was going easily and that its melodies ‘surged upon me’. His comments seem particularly apt where this final movement is concerned. While never losing sight of the musical argument, Dvořák supplies melody after melody, one of the most memorable of which is led by the viola, marked molto espressivo, in the distant key of B major. The development of themes also explores remote keys and experimental harmonies before a celebratory explosion in the key of E flat major brings this remarkable work to a close.

The slow movement, entitled Dumka alternating slow and faster sections, is the lyrical heart of the work. In fact, the contrasts are not particularly marked, with the sensuous ‘fast’ section (Un pochettino piu mosso) ambling along at barely a faster tempo than the soulful opening (Andante con moto). There is greater contrast in the Vivace central section which takes the opening melody of the movement to build a thrilling climax. The brilliant Scherzo is a fast waltz combined with the excitable rhythms of the Czech Furiant. The trio comprises a gentle sequence of chords adorned by and interspersed with dreamy references to the main melody of the Scherzo.

In the superbly sustained finale, Dvořák maintains momentum by leaving his themes open-ended: each one leads on to the next with compelling inevitability. Nothing is wasted and even the jaunty vamp from the start is used to fine developmental effect. After much cheerful bustle, the headlong pace of the music slows with a magical series of chords. After this repose the pace increases and the quintet concludes with brilliant pentatonic flourishes anticipating Dvořák’s ‘American’ manner.

The harmonium was a popular domestic keyboard instrument in Prague in the later nineteenth century.

A friend, Josef Srb-Debrnov, with whom Dvořák enjoyed evenings of chamber music, owned a harmonium and it was for one of these occasions in 1878 that he wrote the Bagatelles. Composed at the same time as the first set of Slavonic Dances, the Bagatelles share their national accent. The catchy opening melody of the first movement, unfolding over pizzicato cello and the subdued drone of the harmonium, not only provides material for this Allegretto scherzando, but returns in the skittish third movement and finale. The second movement is an elegant Minuet and the fourth a rigorous, but sweetly lyrical canon.

A STRONG START TO A REMARKABLE CAREER: THE FIRST TWO PIANO TRIOS OF ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK The fate of a composer who writes a few works which posterity has taken to its heart can be that much of the rest of his music falls into neglect. The enormous popularity of a handful of works, such as the symphony ‘From the New World’, the B minor cello concerto and the ‘American’ quartet and the great A major piano quintet, meant that for many years Dvořák was something of an ‘under known’ composer.

His vast output, which includes eleven operas, songs, cantatas and oratorios, as well as symphonies, concertos, chamber and piano music, shows Dvořák to be a complex musical personality sensitive to contemporary developments and quite capable of establishing a clear musical identity across a number of genres.

In total, Dvořák seems to have written six piano trios, though only four survive. Two, probably composed in 1871 or 1872, were destroyed, but not before the Adagio from one of them was performed at a concert in Prague on 5 July 1872. The trio op. 21 was the first of these to survive and gives a fascinating glimpse of Dvořák at a point of significant change in his career. Composed in the spring of 1875, the trio belongs to a period in which he was forging and consolidating a more conventional approach to musical style and form. In the late 1860s and early 1870s he had gone in for a good deal of wild musical experiment. While to some extent he had been inspired by the music of Wagner and Liszt in this turbulent period, a number of compositions went well beyond mere influence and showed a composer of astonishing originality and technical audacity, in particular the E minor string quartet in which Dvořák pushed form and tonality to the limits of romantic understanding.

Signs of a more approachable musical style were apparent in the third symphony of 1873, but the key turning point came when his comic opera, The King and the Charcoal-Burner, went into rehearsal in the autumn of the same year. The complexity of the score and its unashamedly Wagnerian style caused insurmountable problems for the singers and Dvořák withdrew it. Over the next two years, he not only recomposed the opera note for note in a much simpler and more obviously popular vein, but he also 37

Clarity of design and captivating lyricism are two winning features of the quintet, and Dvořák’s success in matching the richness of his melodic gifts with an unerring grasp of classical form is remarkable. The leisurely opening of the first movement for cello over a rocking piano accompaniment belies the vigorous activity that occupies much of the first movement. In the substantial development, Dvořák makes use of all his themes, but gives pride of place to the opening melody, subjecting it to characteristically subtle alterations.

The assurance of the writing in the B flat major piano trio is immediately apparent: over a rustling accompaniment in the piano part the first violin unfolds an attractive pentatonic theme that looks both back to Dvořák’s first string quartet of 1862 and forward to the opening of his ‘American’ quartet of 1893. The piano soon calls a halt to this leisurely beginning with some abrupt chords leading eventually to an attractive second theme. Dvořák proves himself adept at keeping the more relaxed elements in balance with brisker musical gestures throughout this impressively sustained movement.

The Adagio molto e mesto is simple in both content and outline. The unaffected, wistful melody heard at the start has clear affinities with those in the Dumka slow movements of the composer’s maturity.

Instead of a robust Scherzo, Dvořák adopts a national tone with a Polka by way of a third movement; he may have been prompted by his younger contemporary Zdeněk Fibich’s first use of the Polka in chamber music in his string quartet in A major of 1874. But whatever the model, Dvořák’s Allegretto scherzando is a superbly successful blend of the infectious and the elusive. The finale begins in restless mood with hints of minor keys before eventually settling into a more confident major mode. Although the conclusion is decisively optimistic, a more plaintive note is struck with the introduction of the slow movement’s main theme into the development.

unlike Smetana’s work which is in three and makes a conscious use of thematic recall. Work on the trio proceeded quickly and it was complete by 20 January 1876.

Dvořák begins his trio with an arresting chordal gesture followed by an ‘in tempo’ introduction, a device that he had begun to develop in his first piano quintet and which stood him in good stead up to and including the eighth symphony. The main part of the Allegro moderato, based on two expressive melodies, develops a strong sense of purpose and is pervasively dark and sombre in tone. The Largo, though set in E flat major, often veers toward minor keys – its main melody, reflective and wistful, has like that of the first trio something of the manner of the later Dvořákian Dumka. In the fleet-footed Scherzo, Dvořák shows the depth of his affinities with Beethoven (in particular the Scherzo of the string quartet, op. 135), a trait that would appear later in his ‘Dumky Trio’ and last string quartet, in G major, op.106. The Beethoven manner is also apparent in the main motif of the Finale, but Dvořák’s own developing personality is strongly present as well as his fundamental optimism which brings the trio, begun in such dark circumstances, to a positive conclusion in clear G major.

When Dvořák began work on his G minor piano trio on 4 January 1876, he was exhausted from just having finished the five-act grand opera, Vanda, and grief-stricken, since just following his completion of the first act, his daughter Josefa, only two days old, died. He would certainly have been aware that Smetana, in similar circumstances, had also turned to the trio as a medium to express his grief over the death of his daughter, Bedřiška, in 1855. Though similar in key, and quite possibly inspiration, the two works are very different – Dvořák’s trio is disposed more classically in four unrelated movements 38

began to develop a new approach to style. The watershed year was 1875, a virtual annus mirabilis, in which not only did he write the B flat major piano trio, but the well-loved E major string serenade, the fifth symphony, the D major piano quartet, the G major string quintet, four Moravian Duets and the five-act grand opera, Vanda. Far from stretching his inspiration too far, the works of this remarkably prolific year show a clear crystallization of Dvořák’s mature melodic style.

Diese ehrgeizige Gesamtaufnahme ist allen Klaviertrios, -quartetten und -quintetten Dvořáks gewidmet. Sie schließt zwei Jahre der intensiven Vorbereitung und Aufzeichnung von neun Kammermusikwerken mit Klavier von Dvořák durch das Busch Trio ab, das für die Quartette und Quintette von Miguel da Silva begleitet wurde, der zwischen 1984 und 2014 Bratschist des Quatuor Ysaye war und Maître en résidence an der Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth ist, sowie von der Geigerin und assoziierte Künstlerin der Chapelle Musicale Maria Milstein.

Dieses ambitionierte Projekt entstand dank des sehr talentierten Ensembles Busch Trio, das von 2014 bis 2017 an der Chapelle Musicale Artist in Residence in der Abteilung für Kammermusik war. Das Trio überzeugte das Quatuor Artemis augenblicklich durch die Qualität seines Spiels und sein sehr rigoroses Herangehen an die Musik.

Die Begegnung zwischen dem Trio und dem Bratschisten Miguel da Silva inspirierte die Musiker zu einer Reihe von Kammermusikprojekten. Auf dem Podium begeisterte ihre Alchimie sofort und führte zu diesem anspruchsvollen Aufnahmeprojekt. „Die Idee einer Begegnung zwischen dem Busch Trio und mir selbst: Die Begegnung zwischen Künstlern ist häufig und gehört direkt zu ihrem Beruf.

Oft handelt es sich um eine zufällige, geheimnisvolle, unwiderstehliche Begegnung, die unser Leben prägt und unser Schicksal ändert.“ „Von dieser Aufnahme der Quartette und Quintette bleibt mir nichts mehr als der große Stolz, mit den Buschs aufgenommen zu haben! Die musikalische Qualität dieser Gesamtaufnahme wird ein wichtiges Archiv dieser Künstler bleiben und Maßstäbe für dieses Repertoire setzten.

Außerdem wurde die Gesamtaufnahme im Juni 2018 bei Konzerten gefilmt.

Die Chapelle Musicale freut sich sehr, an diesem schönen Projekt gemeinsam mit ihrem Partner Outhere (Label Alpha) beteiligt gewesen zu sein.

ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Klaviertrio Trio Nr. 3 in f-Moll, op. 65 Von den sechs Klaviertrios, die Dvořák komponierte, haben nur vier überlebt. Zwei Trios, die vermutlich 1871 oder 1872 geschrieben wurden, vernichtete er, jedoch nicht, bevor das Adagio aus einem der beiden Werke am 5. Juli 1872 in Prag aufgeführt worden war. Die uns überlieferten Trios nehmen einen bedeutenden Platz in Dvořáks Schaffen ein – jedes von ihnen steht für einen wichtigen Schritt in seiner Entwicklung als Komponist und zeichnet ein klares Bild seines Stils zum jeweiligen Zeitpunkt.

Das Trio in f-Moll op. 65 aus dem Jahr 1883 deutet bereits neue Richtungen in Dvořáks Stil an. Im vorhergehenden Jahrzehnt hatte er in seiner Heimat Böhmen bereits großes Ansehen erworben, vor allem aufgrund seiner Opern. Seine Mährischen Duette und der erste Teil der Slawischen Tänze hatten seinen Namen in den späten 1870er-Jahren in ganz Europa bekannt gemacht, was in den 1880ern zu einer Flut von Einladungen zu neuen Arbeiten aus dem Ausland, besonders England, führte.

Damit entstand für Dvořák zwangsläufig der Druck, seine natürlichen Instinkte im Zaum zu halten und so zurechtzuschneidern, dass sie sich der österreichisch-deutschen Diktion seines Freundes und Förderers Brahms noch mehr annäherten. Die Ratschläge, die ihm aus Wien erteilt wurden, zielten darauf ab, Dvořák von seinem Kurs auf einen klar national geprägten Musikstil abzubringen und ihn hin zu etwas offensichtlich Brahms’scherem zu führen.

Auf den ersten Blick scheint es, dass Dvořák im Klaviertrio in f-Moll diesen Ansprüchen genügen wollte. Er schrieb das Werk sehr schnell zwischen Februar und März 1883, wenn auch nicht ohne gewisse Hürden. Aus seinem Manuskript geht hervor, dass er Schwierigkeiten dabei hatte, sich für die endgültige Form der Partitur zu entscheiden, und in der Tat weicht die veröffentlichte Version grundsätzlich vom ersten Entwurf ab; er nahm zahlreiche Änderungen vor, unter anderem, was die Reihenfolge der mittleren Sätze betraf. Die erste Aufführung wurde am 27. Oktober 1883 in Mladá Boleslav in Böhmen mit Dvořák am Klavier gegeben – die Prager Premiere fand etwa 2 Wochen später, am 13. November, statt.

Der Brahms’sche Duktus scheint hier in der musikalischen Rhetorik deutlich auf: So könnte das Vorbild des älteren Komponisten auch den ruhelosen Charakter der Seitenthemen im ersten Satz 45

Die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit zwischen Outhere Music und der Musikkapelle, für die vor zehn Jahren der Grundstein gelegt wurde, wird nun mit einem sehr schönen, aufwändigen Projekt rund um die Kammer­ musikwerke mit Klavier von Dvořák fortgesetzt.

Klaviertrio Trio Nr. 4 in e-Moll, op. 90, „Dumky“ Im Januar 1892 legte Dvořák seinem Verleger Simrock fünf vor kurzem vollendete Werke vor.

Unter ihnen befanden sich sechs Dumkas für Klaviertrio, die, wie der Komponist hinzufügte, in „kammermusikalischem Stil“ geschrieben waren. In seiner späteren Korrespondenz mit Simrock bezeichnete Dvořák die Dumkas gewöhnlich als Klaviertrio, doch während ihrer Entstehungsphase 1890 war er sich längst noch nicht über ihre endgültige Benennung sicher:

Zur Zeit arbeite ich an etwas Kleinem, tatsächlich sehr Kleinem . . . kurze Stücke für Violine, Cello und Klavier. Das Werk wird fröhlich und traurig zugleich sein! An manchen Stellen wie ein meditatives Lied, an anderen einfach wie ein freudvoller Tanz.

Diese Beschreibung, die Dvořák seinem guten Freund Alois Göbl gab, ist nicht nur akkurat, was den emotionalen Gehalt des Werkes betrifft, sondern sie fasst auch in wenigen Worten die Ansichten des Komponisten darüber zusammen, was die Dumka eigentlich ist. Zwar hatte er bereits in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen Dumkas geschrieben, doch bislang hatte er noch nie den Versuch unternommen, eine ganze, zusammengehörige Reihe zu komponieren. Die äußerliche, formale Ähnlichkeit aller Sätze – mit ihrem ständigen Wechsel zwischen langsamen und schnellen Tempi, der von der namensgebenden ukrainischen Volksweise herrühren mag – hätte zu einer gewissen Monotonie führen können, wären da nicht Dvořáks melodische Vielfalt, sein geschickter Aufbau und der äußerst durchdachte Einsatz der Instrumente gewesen.

Der Beginn der ersten Dumka ist ein kühner Ruf nach Aufmerksamkeit. Zwar ist dieses Stück kein gewöhnlicher erster Satz, doch im Zusammenhang mit der zweiten Dumka, in die es ohne nennenswerte Pause übergeht, erfüllt es viele der entsprechenden Kriterien. Ständiger Wechsel bestimmt die Struktur beider Sätze, und auch wenn Dvořák seine Themen stets entwickelt, sind es doch die mit Verzierungen und geschickter Instrumentierung bereicherten Wiederholungen, die hier den Ton angeben. Das dritte Stück, in klar dreigeteilter Form, ist das einfachste von allen: Nach einem strahlenden Präludium wird die rechte Hand des Pianisten zur Solistin, die eine gleichsam gesungen wirkende Melodie interpretiert – vielleicht das oben erwähnte „meditative Lied“. Der marschartige Grundtenor der vierten Dumka wird zweimal von einem ausgelassenen Allegretto scherzando unterbrochen. Eine dritte Unterbrechung leitet zu einem spielerischen Allegro über, bevor zur rhythmisierteren Gangart des anfänglichen Andante moderato zurückgekehrt wird, das dann traumverloren in die Ferne entschwindet. Die kühnen Akkorde, mit denen die fünfte Dumka beginnt, kündigen einen Satz an, der bei all seiner Anmut und Leichtigkeit der dichteste in diesem Werk ist. Mit Hilfe solcher Kunstgriffe wie Kanons und der Verkleinerung der Notenwerte führt Dvořák sein Thema mit Beethoven’scher Bestimmtheit weiter. Die letzte Dumka ist die ernsteste und dramatischste von allen sechs. Ein äußerst ausdrucksstarkes Lento erklingt im

geprägt haben – an Punkten also, wo Dvořák normalerweise getragenere Melodien wählte. Auch Einflüsse eines nicht aus Wien stammenden Komponisten könnten hier gewirkt haben, nämlich das f-Moll-Trio des tschechischen Komponisten Zdeněk Fibich aus dem Jahre 1872, dessen Eingangsidee verblüffende Ähnlichkeit mit der Dvořáks aufweist. Dennoch ist das Werk in seinen Grundzügen ganz typisch für Dvořák: Sein kraftvoller Ton, der klar eine tragische Grundstimmung erzeugt, ist vielleicht persönlichen Lebensumständen Dvořáks geschuldet, dessen Mutter zwei Monate, bevor er das Trio begann, gestorben war.

Die Dringlichkeit, die den Beginn des ersten Satzes kennzeichnet, ist allgegenwärtig, selbst in den stilleren Seitenthemen. Als Hintergrund zur drängenden Energie des Allegro ma non troppo setzt Dvořák ein Intermezzo anstelle eines voll ausgeführten Scherzos: Die Hauptmelodie hat wehmütigen Charakter, während im Mittelteil die ersten entspannten, lyrischen Passagen des Werkes vorgestellt werden. Der langsame Satz mit seiner beredten, fast gesanglichen Melodie des Cellos nimmt den großen Gestus des ersten Satzes wieder auf. Das abschließende Allegro con brio ist einer der eindrucksvollsten Finalsätze Dvořáks aus dieser Schaffensphase. Die Kreuzrhythmen dieses Finales erinnern ein wenig an den tschechischen Furiant, doch der vorherrschende Eindruck ist derjenige abstrakter, ruheloser Aktivität.

Wenn hier Einflüsse aus der Volksmusik zu finden sind, dann wohl in dem walzerähnlichen Nebenthema.

Die Auflösung all dieses regen Treibens kommt in Form einer wundervoll dunklen Referenz auf das Eingangsthema des ersten Satzes daher, bevor dann ein Augenblick süßer Nostalgie mit einem flotten Sprung in die Kadenz davongespült wird.

„… DIE MELODIEN STRÖMTEN MIR NUR SO ZU“ DVOŘÁKS KLAVIERQUARTETTE Die beiden Klavierquartette Dvořáks stammen aus zwei sehr verschiedenen Perioden seiner Schaffenszeit. Das erste komponierte er 1875, also im Jahr, in dem er vom österreichischen Staat ein Stipendium zur Unterstützung armer Künstler erhielt. Das erlaubte ihm, sich dem Komponieren zu widmen, was zu eindrucksvollen Ergebnissen führte: Abgesehen von seinem ersten Klavierquartett komponierte Dvořák 1875 seine berühmte Serenade in E-Dur, mehrere seiner Mährischen Duette, die fünfte Symphonie in F-Dur sowie die fünfaktige große Oper Wanda. Im Gegensatz dazu stammt das fünfzehn Jahre später entstandene zweite Klavierquartett aus einer Zeit, in der er der Stolz Europas war, weit und breit Aufmerksamkeit erregte und von überall Aufträge erhielt.

Die Zusprechung eines Stipendiums war in Dvořáks Karriere bis dahin noch nie dagewesen und löste solche Kreativität aus, dass er mit erstaunlicher Geschwindigkeit komponierte und das Klavierquintett in kaum mehr als vierzehn Tagen zwischen dem 24. Mai und dem 10. Juni direkt nach der Streicherserenade vollendete. Danach musste es allerdings mehr als fünf Jahre auf seine Uraufführung warten, die in Prag am 16. Dezember 1880 stattfand. Das Klavierquartett hat mit der Serenade großzügige melodische Eigenschaften gemein, nicht zuletzt im Anfangsthema des ersten Satzes mit seiner pulsierenden Begleitung. Doch im Großen und Ganzen hat der erste Satz eine nachdenkliche, manchmal rastlose Tendenz, die zu einer sowohl lyrischen als auch intensiven Themenverarbeitung führt. Dvořák macht sich auch die Kombination der Instrumente bestens zunutze: Das Cello übernimmt die Führung mit dem ersten Thema und unterstützt das Klavier im zweiten Hauptthema mit süßen, zarten, harmonischen Schattierungen.

Das zentrale Andantino besteht aus einer Reihe von fünf Variationen sowie einer Coda und baut auf einer ausdrucksstarken Melodie in h-Moll auf. Hier ist eine deutliche Vorwegnahme von Dvořáks Dumka-Stil festzustellen, in dem leichtere Abschnitte zu einer vorherrschend gefühlvollen Art im Kontrast stehen. Wie im ersten ist die instrumentale Textur überwältigend reich, und ein starker Sinn für den rhythmischen Antrieb führt vor einem erlesenen, zurückhaltenden Schluss zu einer erstaunlich leidenschaftlichen Coda. Der Schlusssatz hat den Anhauch eines mutigen Experiments, da darin Elemente des Scherzos mit solchen des Finales kombiniert sind. Ein sanfter Beginn, der wieder vom Cello angeführt wird, ruft bald die nervösen Gegenrhythmen des tschechischen Furiants hervor und leitet zu einer energischen, sofort ins Ohr gehenden Durchführung über. Die Ergebnisse sind zweifellos bemerkenswert, auch wenn der Schluss ein wenig eigenwillig ist.

In den 1860er Jahren war Dvořák vor allem als Orchesterbratschist bekannt, doch in den frühen 1870er Jahren begann er als aufstrebender Komponist in Erscheinung zu treten. Im Juli 1871 kündigte er seine Stelle beim Orchester des Prager Interimstheater, das vor allem Stücke und Opern in tschechischer Sprache aufführte. Kurze Zeit später begann er, an Kammermusikabenden im Haus des Industriellen Baron Josef von Portheim mitzuwirken. Verbindungen zu einer Reihe von Salons in Prag führten zur Gelegenheit, Kammermusik zu komponieren, darunter 1872 ein erstes Klavierquintett (A-Dur, op. 5, B 28) und 1875 das Klavierquartett in D-Dur.

Auf das Drängen seines Berliner Verlegers Fritz Simrock schrieb Dvořák ein Klavierquartett in Es-Dur. Simrock bedrängte ihn seit 1885, ein Klavierquartett zu schreiben, und bestürmte den Komponisten erneut 1887 und 1888, indem er behauptete, Dvořák habe ihm „seit langem“ ein solches Werk versprochen. Dvořák begann schließlich Mitte Juli, das Quartett zu komponieren, und vollendete das Finale am 19. August. Die Uraufführung fand am 17. Oktober 1890 in Frankfurt am Main statt.

Eine etwas spätere Aufführung in München am 12. November 1890 veranlasste den Professor eines

Wechsel mit einem heftigen Vivace. Die Atmosphäre wirkt durch ein Tremolo im Cellopart wie elektrisch aufgeladen, und rezitativartige Klavierpassagen produzieren Momente höchster Spannung.

Trotz all ihrer Neuartigkeit nehmen Dvořáks Dumkas einen festen Platz in seinem Repertoire ein und stellen ein Beispiel für seinen großen Erfolg beim Publikum dar – und das, obwohl der Komponist selbst diese Stücke als Experiment betrachtet hatte. Doch mit den sich stets ändernden Klangfarben der Instrumente und ihrer großen emotionalen Bandbreite konnten sie sich schon seit der ersten Aufführung am 11. März 1891, bei der Dvořák selbst am Klavier saß, außerordentlicher Popularität erfreuen.

Obwohl das Klavierquartett in Es-Dur nie die große Beliebtheit des zwei Jahre zuvor geschriebenen zweiten Klavierquintetts (op. 81, B 155) erreichte, ist es ebenso direkt und einnehmend lyrisch.

Allerdings gibt es Unterschiede, in der Art, in der die Argumentation vorgetragen wird. Im Gegensatz zum Quintett ist der Beginn des Klavierquartetts, in dem die Streicher das erste Thema unisono vorstellen, fast schroff, worauf eine akkordische Antwort vom Klavier folgt. Das führt zu einer erfrischenden Exposition des Hauptthemas, das die Entwicklung einer kraftvollen Argumentation und breitgefächerten Modulation einleitet.

Während der Charakter des Klavierquartetts im Ganzen gesehen positiv und energisch ist, kommt manchmal im musikalischen Ausdruck des Werkes eine tragische Gegenströmung auf, die im langsamen Satz am stärksten ist. Der Beginn des breit gefächerten Lentos ist von äußerlicher Gelassenheit, die von einem anmutigen Cellothema charakterisiert wird. Als diese Exposition ihrem Ende zugeht, taucht die Musik in einen leidenschaftlichen Abschnitt voll tragischer Rhetorik, bevor sich die Gelassenheit mit einer neuen Melodie wieder einstellt. Die überraschenden Wendungen des Affekts in diesem außerordentlichen Satz nehmen sowohl das Adagio der achten Symphonie (op. 88, B 163) vorweg als auch viele Momente des „Dumky-Trios“ (op. 90, B 166).

Auf unübliche Weise beginnt das Scherzo mit einer deutlichen Einleitungsgeste, bevor es sich für ein elegantes, fast walzerartiges Hauptthema entscheidet. In diesem Anfangsteil übernehmen die Streicher die Leitung, während das Klavier eine Begleitung dazu spielt, die manchmal an das Cymbalom erinnert.

Der verführerischen Mattigkeit des einführenden Abschnitts wird ein energischeres Trio mit lebhaften, kanonartigen Wortwechseln zwischen Geige und Bratsche gegenübergestellt.

DVOŘÁKS KLAVIERQUINTETTE : LEHRZEIT UND REIFE Der entscheidende Moment in Dvořáks früher Karriere war der spektakuläre Erfolg der Uraufführung seiner patriotischen Kantate Die Erben des weißen Bergs im Jahr 1873 in Prag.

Doch schon seit Beginn der 1870er Jahre trat er als Komponist nach einem Jahrzehnt in Erscheinung, in dem er vor allem als zuverlässiger Bratschist und Stütze des Opernorchester des Prager Tschechischen Theaters galt. In den 1860er Jahren waren Dvořáks kompositorische Arbeiten, die er fast ganz für sich behielt, untypisch für seine tschechischen Zeitgenossen: zwei groß angelegte Symphonien, ein Liederzyklus und zwei höchst experimentale Streichquartette.

Die ersten Anzeichen dafür, dass Dvořák seinen Stil mäßigte, waren Lieder und Werke mit kleineren Ausmaßen für die Prager Salons, besonders für den von Ludevít Procházka, einem begeisterten Amateurpianisten, und seiner Frau, der Opernsängerin Marta Reissingerová. Aus dieser Zeit stammt sein erstes Klavierquintett in A-Dur, das er im Spätsommer 1872 komponierte. Dieses Quintett hätte der Nachwelt verlorengehen können, da Dvořák sein Manuskript anscheinend zerriss und verbrannte.

Procházka hatte aber eine Kopie davon angefertigt, und so überlebte es das übereilte, unüberlegte Urteil des Komponisten.

Das Finale beginnt mit einer kräftigen Unisono-Einleitung in Moll, doch stürzt es sich bald in eine positive Melodie in Dur. In einem Brief an seinen engen Freund Alois Göbl schwärmte Dvořák von der Arbeit an seinem Quartett und sagte, dass ihm die Komposition leicht von der Hand gingen ihm „die

Melodien nur so zuströmten“. Seine Kommentare scheinen besonders passend, wenn man an diesen Schlusssatz denkt. Während Dvořák die musikalische Argumentation niemals aus den Augen verliert, bringt er eine Melodie nach der anderen, unter denen eine der unvergesslichsten von der Bratsche gespielt wird. Sie wird als molto espressivo bezeichnet und steht in der entfernten Tonart H-Dur. Auch die Durchführung der Themen durchläuft entfernte Tonarten und experimentelle Harmonien, bevor eine feierliche Explosion der Tonart Es-Dur dieses bemerkenswerte Werk beendet.

Konservatoriums Dvořák zu schreiben, um ihn zu informieren, dass „Kritiker und Publikum in ihrem Lob einstimmig waren“.

Das intensive, eindrucksvoll unterstützte Andante sostenuto baut auf einem Hauptthema von beethoven’scher Noblesse auf. Nach einem ruhelosen Mittelteil kommt der Satz zu einem zauberhaft ruhigen Abschluss. In scharfem Kontrast dazu beginnt das Finale turbulent mit einem kühnen Hauptthema. Möglicherweise wollte Dvořák das Fehlen eines dritten Satzes durch den Einbau von Elementen im Scherzostil wettmachen. Obwohl es sich um ein Frühwerk handelt, ist dieses Quintett im Ganzen gesehen mit bemerkenswerter Sicherheit geschrieben.

Während einer seiner regelmäßigen Überarbeitungen früher Werke erinnerte sich Dvořák an sein Klavierquintett und bat Procházka um seine Kopie davon. Nachdem er Striche in allen drei Sätzen vorgenommen hatte, fühlte sich Dvořák dennoch nicht fähig, es seinem Verleger Simrock vorzulegen (die Uraufführung der überarbeiteten Fassung fand erst 1922 statt, also achtzehn Jahre nach dem Tod des Komponisten). Doch wie es bei Dvořák oft der Fall war, führte die Auseinandersetzung mit einem Werk zur Komposition eines anderen derselben Gattung. Fünf Monate hindurch kämpfte er mit dem früheren Quintett, bis er zu dem Schluss kam, dass es nicht „lebensfähig“ sei. Diese Bemühungen setzten jedoch frische, kreative Energien frei, so dass das neue Quintett in nur etwas mehr als sechs Wochen von Mitte August bis Anfang Oktober 1887 vollendet wurde.

Die Klarheit der Konzeption und die faszinierende Lyrik sind zwei einnehmende Merkmale dieses Quintetts, und Dvořáks gelungene Kombination seines reichen melodischen Talents mit seiner unfehlbaren Beherrschung der klassischen Form ist bemerkenswert. Der geruhsame Beginn des ersten Satzes, der dem Cello über einer wiegenden Begleitung des Klaviers anvertraut ist, widerspricht der energischen Aktivität, die den Großteil des ersten Satzes einnimmt. In der soliden Durchführung benutzt Dvořák alle seine Themen, teilt aber der Anfangsmelodie besondere Bedeutung zu und unterzieht sie Veränderungen von charakteristischer Subtilität.

Im langsamen, Dumka genannten Satz wechseln langsame und raschere Teile ab. Er ist das lyrische Zentrum des Werkes. Eigentlich sind die Kontraste nicht besonders stark. Der sinnliche „rasche“ Teil (Un pochettino piu mosso) schlendert mit einem kaum schnelleren Tempo voran als der gefühlvolle Beginn (Andante con moto). Stärker ist der Kontrast im Vivace-Mittelteil, der die Anfangsmelodie des Satzes verwendet, um einen spannenden Höhepunkt zu schaffen. Das brillante Scherzo ist ein schneller Walzer, der mit den nervösen Rhythmen des tschechischen Furiants kombiniert ist. Das Trio enthält eine sanfte Aufeinanderfolge von Akkorden, die mit träumerischen Anspielungen auf das Hauptthema des Scherzos verziert und durchsetzt sind.

Im großartig angelegten Finale erhält Dvořák den Elan bei, indem er das Ende seiner Themen offen lässt: Jedes führt mit zwingender Unvermeidlichkeit zum nächsten. Nichts geht verloren, und selbst die fröhlichen Akkorde des Beginns werden in der Durchführung effektvoll eingesetzt. Nach viel fröhlicher Geschäftigkeit verlangsamt sich die überstürzte Geschwindigkeit der Musik mit einer Reihe magischer Akkorde. Nach dieser Ruhe wird das Tempo wieder rascher, und das Quintett endet mit brillanten pentatonischen Figuren, die Dvořáks „amerikanische“ Kompositionsweise vorwegnehmen.

Das zweite Quintett schrieb Dvořák, als er nahe am Höhepunkt seines internationalen Rufes stand; auch kam es ihm zugute, dass es in der angenehmen Umgebung seines ländlichen Zufluchtsortes Vysoka komponiert wurde. Die Uraufführung fand am 8. Januar 1888 in Prag mit vier der damals besten

und Streichern behandelt (was besonders eindrucksvoll ist, da er in diesem Stadium seiner Karriere noch kein eigenes Klavier besaß), ist unbestreitbar und nimmt an vielen Stellen das berühmte zweite Klavierquintett vorweg. In diesem frühen Stadium seiner Karriere sind deutliche Einflüsse unvermeidbar: Liszt beim Anfangsthema des ersten Satzes und vielleicht Schubert beim zweiten Hauptthema. Aber insgesamt ist der musikalische Diskurs sehr klar und wird danach durch die Überarbeitung noch verstärkt, die Dvořák 1887 vornahm, wobei er auch etwa 150 Takte strich. Seine spätere Entscheidung, das zweite Thema in der Reprise wegzulassen, führt zu einem etwas abrupten Ende des Satzes, dem er dennoch einen angemessenen heroischen Abschluss verleiht.

EIN HERVORRAGENDER KARRIERESTART: DIE ERSTEN BEIDEN KLAVIERTRIOS VON ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK Das Schicksal eines Komponisten, von dem die Nachwelt einige Werke ins Herz schließt, kann es mit sich bringen, dass ein bedeutender Anteil seiner restlichen Musik vernachlässigt wird. Die enorme Beliebtheit einer Handvoll seiner Werke wie etwa der Symphonie „Aus der Neuen Welt“, des Cellokonzerts in h-Moll und des „Amerikanische“ Quartetts sowie des große Klavierquintetts in A-Dur bedeutete, dass Dvořák viele Jahre lang sozusagen ein „verkannter“ Komponist blieb. Sein riesiges Schaffen, das elf Opern, Lieder, Kantaten und Oratorien sowie Symphonien, Konzerte, Kammermusik und Klavierwerke umfasst, zeigt, dass Dvořák eine komplexe musikalische Persönlichkeit und zeitgenössischen Entwicklungen gegenüber aufgeschlossen und durchaus fähig war, seine musikalische Identität in zahlreichen Gattungen zu beweisen.

Im Ganzen scheint Dvořák sechs Klaviertrios geschrieben zu haben, obwohl nur vier erhalten sind.

Zwei wahrscheinlich 1871 oder 1872 komponierte wurden zerstört, doch nicht bevor das Adagio aus einem davon bei einem Konzert in Prag am 5. Juli 1872 aufgeführt worden war. Das Trio op. 21 ist das erste, das uns erhalten ist. Es vermittelt eine faszinierende Vorstellung von Dvořák zum Zeitpunkt einer bedeutenden Wende in seiner Karriere. Im Frühjahr 1875 komponiert, gehört dieses Trio in eine Periode, in der er dem musikalischen Stil und der Form gegenüber einen konventionelleren Ansatz entwickelt und konsolidiert. In den späten 1860er und den frühen 1870er Jahren widmete er sich einer ganzen 54

Reihe gewagter musikalischer Experimente. Zwar wurde er in dieser turbulenten Zeit bis zu einem gewissen Grad von der Musik Wagners und Liszts inspiriert, doch gehen einige Kompositionen weit über einen einfachen Einfluss hinaus und zeigen einen Komponisten von erstaunlicher Originalität und technischer Kühnheit, u.zw. besonders im e-Moll-Streichquartett, in dem Dvořák Form und Tonart bis an die Grenzen der romantischen Konzeption treibt.

Zeichen für einen zugänglicheren Stil tauchten ab seiner dritten Symphonie 1873 auf, doch die entscheidende Wende kam mit den Proben zu seiner komischen Oper Der König und der Köhler im Herbst desselben Jahres. Die Komplexität der Komposition und ihr unverhohlen wagnerianischer Stil stellten die Sänger vor unüberwindbare Probleme, bis Dvořák sie zurücknahm. Im Laufe der beiden darauffolgenden Jahre komponierte er die Oper nicht nur Note für Note neu in einer viel einfacheren und offensichtlich volkstümlichen Manier, sondern er begann auch, einen neuen Ansatz dem Stil gegenüber zu entwickeln. Das entscheidende Jahr war 1875, quasi ein annus mirabilis, in dem er nicht nur das Klaviertrio in B-Dur schrieb, sondern auch die beliebte E-Dur-Streicherserenade, die fünfte Symphonie, das Klavierquartett in D-Dur, das Streichquintett in G-Dur, vier mährische Duette und die fünfaktige große Oper Wanda. Weit davon entfernt, seine Inspiration zu sehr in Anspruch zu nehmen, zeigt das Werk dieses bemerkenswert produktiven Jahres eine deutliche Kristallisation von Dvořáks melodischem Reifestil.

Die Selbstsicherheit der Komposition im Klaviertrio in B-Dur ist sofort offensichtlich: Über einer vibrierenden Begleitung des Klaviers entfaltet die erste Geige ein reizvolles pentatonisches Thema, das sowohl auf Dvořáks erstes Streichquartett aus dem Jahr 1862 zurückblickt, als auch den Beginn des „amerikanischen“ Quartetts aus dem Jahr 1893 vorwegnimmt. Bald setzt das Klavier diesem gemütlichen Beginn mit einigen abrupten Akkorden ein Ende, die danach zu einem ansprechenden zweiten Thema führen. Dvořák beweist seine Fähigkeit, während dieses gesamten, eindrucksvoll durchgeführten Satzes zwischen den entspannteren Elementen und den lebhafteren musikalischen Gesten ein Gleichgewicht herzustellen.

Dvořák schrieb 1878 für eine dieser Abende Bagatelles. Dieses Werk, das zur gleichen Zeit wie der erste Entwurf der Slawischen Tänze entstand, hat mit diesen die nationalen Töne gemein. Das einprägsame Anfangsthema des ersten Satzes, das sich über vom Cello gespielten Pizzicati und dem gedämpften Bordun des Harmoniums entfaltet, liefert nicht nur Material für dieses Allegretto scherzando, sondern kehrt im übermütigen dritten Satz und im Finale wieder. Der zweite Satz ist ein elegantes Menuett, und der vierte ein strenger, doch lieblicher, lyrischer Kanon.

Scherzo des Streichquartetts op. 135), ein Zug, der später in seinem „Dumky-Trio“ sowie in seinem letzten Streichquartett in G-Dur, op. 106 wieder auftaucht. Beethovens Kompositionsweise ist auch im Hauptthema des Finales offensichtlich, doch Dvořáks sich entfaltende eigene Persönlichkeit ist ebenso stark vorhanden wie sein grundsätzlicher Optimismus, der das unter so düsteren Umständen begonnene Trio zu einem positiven Schluss in klarem G-Dur bringt.

Das Adagio molto e mesto ist sowohl hinsichtlich seines Gehaltes als auch seiner Konzeption einfach.

Die melancholische Melodie ohne Affektiertheit, die man zu Beginn hört, weist offensichtliche Gemeinsamkeiten mit denen der langsamen Sätze der Dumka aus der Reifezeit des Komponisten auf.

Anstatt eines robusten Scherzos schlägt Dvořák mit einer Polka als dritten Satz nationale Töne an; dazu könnte er von seinem jüngeren Zeitgenossen Zdenˇek Fibich inspiriert worden sein, der als erster in der Kammermusik eine Polka verwendet hatte, u.zw. in seinem Streichquartett in A-Dur aus dem Jahr 1874.

Doch egal was Dvořáks Modell war, sein Allegretto scherzando ist eine wunderbar gelungene Mischung aus Mitreißendem und schwer Fassbarem. Das Finale beginnt rastlos mit Spuren von Molltonarten, bevor es sich schließlich einer vertrauensvolleren Durtonart widmet. Obwohl der Schluss entschieden optimistisch ist, schlägt die Einleitung in der Durchführung des Hauptthemas im langsamen Satz einen klagenderen Tonfall an.

Als Dvořák am 4. Januar 1876 mit der Arbeit an seinem g-Moll-Klaviertrio begann, war er von der Komposition seiner gerade beendeten fünfaktigen Oper Wanda erschöpft und in Trauer, denn kaum hatte er den ersten Akt vollendet, starb seine erst zwei Tage alte Tochter Josefa. Sicher wusste er, das Smetana in ähnlichen Umständen beim Trio als einem Mittel Zuflucht gefunden hatte, durch das er seinen Schmerz über den Tod seiner Tochter Bedˇriška im Jahr 1855 Ausdruck geben konnte. Obwohl beide Trios dieselbe Tonart und höchstwahrscheinlich die gleiche Inspirationsquelle haben, sind sie sehr verschieden – Dvořáks Trio ist klassischer in vier Sätzen angelegt, die keine Verbindung untereinander haben, während Smetanas Werk drei Sätze hat und bewusst mit wiederkehrenden Themen arbeitet. Die Komposition am Trio ging rasch voran, so dass es am 20. Januar 1876 beendet war.

Dvořák beginnt sein Trio mit einer faszinierenden akkordischen Geste, auf die eine „in-tempo“Einleitung folgt, ein Verfahren, das er in seinem ersten Klavierquintett zu entwickeln begann und bis zur achten Symphonie verwendete. Der Hauptteil des Allegro moderato baut auf zwei expressiven Melodien auf, entwickelt eine starke Entschlusskraft und hat einen ständig dunklen, düsteren Charakter.

Obwohl das Largo in Es-Dur geschrieben ist, gleitet es oft in Molltonarten ab – sein nachdenkliches, melancholisches Hauptthema hat wie das des ersten Trios etwas von Dvořáks späterer Dumka an sich.

Im leichtfüßigen Scherzo zeigt Dvořák seine tiefe Verbundenheit mit Beethoven (besonders mit dem 56

1985 Erster Grand Prix beim internationalen Kammermusikwettbewerb von Paris in der Kategorie

2014 Der Terminkalender ihrer Konzerte füllt sich immer mehr und führt sie nach Deutschland,

1987

Gründung des Quatuor Ysaÿe.

Frankreich, die Niederlande, Belgien, Dänemark und China, darunter ins Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Bozar Brüssel, die Wigmore Hall London usw.

1988

Erster Preis beim Streichquartett-Wettbewerb von Evian.

2015 Nach ihrem Konzert in der Wigmore Hall schrieb The Times: „[...] am meisten beeindruckte das mühelose musikalische Können der Gruppe sowie die Einheitlichkeit der Konzeption und der Einsätze. Das Trio schein sogar gleichzeitig zu atmen.“ Als „Artists in residence“ an der Königin-Elisabeth-Musikkapelle in Belgien werden sie von Mitgliedern des Artemis Quartetts beraten und beginnen eine langzeitige Zusammenarbeit mit Miguel de Silva.

2016 Sie veröffentlichen ihre erste CD mit den Trios op. 65 & 90 von Dvořák bei Alpha Classics. Die

„Sonate“.

1993 Am Conservatoire National de Région de Paris (von nun an „Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional“ genannt) bilden Miguel de Silva und das Quatuor Ysaÿe eine Klasse, die spezielle dem Streichquartett gewidmet ist, was in Frankreich eine Premiere ist.

2009

Musikalischer Berater an der Musikakademie von Villecroze.

Abschiedskonzert des Quatuor Yasÿe an der „Cité de la Musique“.

Meister in residence an der Königin-Elisabeth-Musikkapelle parallel zu seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der HEM von Genf, am CRR von Paris, an der ECMA u.a.m.

CD erhält gute Kritiken und wird von drei angesehenen europäischen Radiosendern zur CD der Woche ernannt.

2017 Das Trio tritt zum ersten Mal in den USA sowie im Louvre-Museum und im Flagey-Konzertsaal in Brüssel auf. Sie haben auch Direktübertragungen im belgischen Sender Musiq’3, im niederländischen Radio 4, im französischen Radio France, im Deutschlandfunk sowie im NDR.

2018 Das Trio wurde mit dem Junge Elite Ensemblepreis von Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ausgezeichnet.

Es veranstaltet eine Reihe von Konzerten mit allen Werken für Klavier und Streicher von Dvořák, die gefilmt und danach auf der ganzen Welt gesendet werden.
