Dans ces quelques 300 pages qu’il me confia, Ugolini, Benevolo et Lorenzani étaient en bonne place. Ces trois compositeurs étaient passés par Saint-Louis-des-Français, la paroisse des Français résidant à Rome. Et c’est à la lecture de ce kilo de partitions que la rencontre avec Benevolo fut un choc ! On peut imaginer que ces messes et motets à 8, 16 et 24 voix n’étaient qu’une démonstration de décibels grandiloquents pour attirer les fidèles et garnir les bancs de la paroisse. De l’intérieur, chaque chanteur doit défendre sa partie, certes complexe mais, ô bonheur, toujours très vocale et jubilatoire. Et l’on assiste subitement à un déferlement de sensualité et de suavité. La complexité et la science sont oubliées pour faire place à une générosité immense. Ce Benevolo m’a fait le même effet qu’un Français bien connu, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, sans le côté précieusement puissant, si parisien ! Je n’ai eu de cesse, après un disque de motets à 2 chœurs enregistré il y a 20 ans, de pouvoir montrer que Benevolo est un de ces grands génies italiens oubliés. Eh bien voilà, le rêve est réalisé avec une équipe de musiciens galvanisés par une musique nous dépassant totalement. Merci à Jean Lionnet et à Orazio Benevolo. Hervé Niquet

SPLENDEURS POLYCHORALES DE LA CONTRE-RÉFORME PAR DENIS MORRIER Alors qu’elle avait été mise à sac par les armées impériales en 1527, la « Ville Éternelle » connaît une véritable renaissance durant la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, sous l’impulsion de la ContreRéforme. Les directives de ce vaste mouvement de « reconquête », tant religieuse, idéologique que politique, avaient été définies par le Concile de Trente (1545-1563). La place de la musique dans la liturgie fut alors reconsidérée. Les actes conciliaires ont réaffirmé la primauté du plain-chant. Ces monodies liturgiques héritées des répertoires grégoriens sont dès lors restaurées par d’ambitieux projets éditoriaux : en témoignent les éditions de la Typographia Medicaea réalisées à l’instigation de Paul V Borghese en 1614. Par ailleurs, le Concile va ériger le style polyphonique de Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-1594) en véritable modèle d’une musique idéalement catholique, satisfaisant tout autant aux exigences d’intelligibilité du texte que d’édification des fidèles. Les résolutions conciliaires vont favoriser le développement de techniques nouvelles et d’une esthétique moderne, aujourd’hui dénommée « baroque ». Les artistes engagés dans la Contre-Réforme n’ont pas seulement pour mission d’édifier les fidèles, il leur faut également séduire et éblouir. La musique liturgique de Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) incarne idéalement cette double vocation. Sa carrière l’a mené de Crémone à Mantoue, puis à Venise où il dirige, de 1613 jusqu’à sa mort, la cappella musicale de la basilique San Marco. Ses compositions vénitiennes portent à leur apogée les techniques forgées par ses prédécesseurs, Adriaan Willaert, Andrea et Giovanni Gabrieli : l’écriture « en dialogue » mêlant voix et instruments (le stile concertato) et la disposition polyphonique en différents chœurs spatialisés (les cori spezzati ). Les musiciens des chapelles romaines vont rapidement s’approprier ces procédés emblématiques du stile moderno.

Ce disque est le résultat de deux rencontres. Tout d’abord Jean Lionnet, chercheur au Centre de musique baroque de Versailles. Jean me confia il y a 30 ans plusieurs partitions copiées de sa main lorsqu’il passait des heures, à la bibliothèque du Vatican, à transcrire de sa plume des manuscrits interdits de sortie. Il y a une cinquantaine d’années, aucune des technologies de « copie douce » n’existait.
D’autres chapelles romaines furent d’importants foyers de création musicale : Saint-Jean de Latran, Sainte-Marie-Majeure, Saint-Louis-des-Français. Au XVIIe siècle, ces églises rivalisaient de faste pour les célébrations de leurs saints patrons. En ces occasions, on donnait trois services extraordinaires où il était d’usage de réunir de nombreux musiciens, chanteurs et instrumentistes, venant se joindre aux musiciens ordinaires. Ces somptueux offices étaient généralement exécutés par plusieurs chœurs vocaux et instrumentaux. André Maugars, dans sa Réponse faite à un curieux sur le sentiment de la musique en Italie, écrite à Rome le 1er octobre 1639, décrit le dispositif construit dans l’église de La Minerva le jour de la fête de Saint Dominique. Il y avait dix cori : deux dans les tribunes fixes qui sont de chaque côté du chœur de l’église, et huit autres répartis symétriquement le long de la nef, sur des palchi construits pour l’occasion. Chaque tribune supplémentaire était pourvue d’un orgue positif. Il mentionne également d’autres instruments, accompagnant les voix ou exécutant des pièces. Pour que tous ces musiciens, malgré leur éloignement, exécutent leurs parties en parfaite simultanéité, il était d’usage de faire appel à des capi di coro : ces « batteurs de mesure », placés à l’avant de chaque tribune, se regardaient les uns les autres pour synchroniser leurs battues, tandis que les 12
chanteurs et les instrumentistes étaient placés derrière eux. Le compositeur et théoricien allemand Michael Praetorius a fait graver une illustration éloquente de ce type de dispositif sur le frontispice de son Theatrum Instrumentorum (Wolfenbüttel, 1620). Orazio Benevolo, ou Benevoli (1605-1672) fut l’un des plus remarquables créateurs de ces monuments polychoraux hors norme. Il était le fils d’un pâtissier français, Robert Bénevot, qui était venu s’installer à Rome à la fin du XVIe siècle. Appartenant à la communauté française de Rome, la famille fréquentait l’église Saint-Louis-des-Français. Orazio fut admis comme enfant de chœur dans cette chapelle, puis en gravit les échelons hiérarchiques jusqu’à obtenir la charge de Maestro di Cappella en 1638. En 1644, il quitte l’institution et occupe divers postes jusqu’en 1646 : il obtient alors la direction de la Cappella Giulia à Saint-Pierre de Rome, charge qu’il conserve jusqu’à sa mort. Benevolo a laissé une œuvre abondante, ne comprenant pas moins de trente-quatre motets pour divers effectifs, dont Regna terrae conçu pour douze soprani, réparties en six chœurs de deux chanteuses, chacun étant pourvu de son accompagnement de basse continue. Il a également composé douze versions du Magnificat, de huit à vingt-quatre voix, dont une à seize voix en quadruple chœur. Sa messe à seize voix, Si Deus pro nobis, aurait été composée en 1660 : plusieurs copies en ont été conservées, tant en Italie qu’en Allemagne. Elle introduit divers procédés d’écriture au fil de multiples sections contrastées, opposant d’impressionnants tutti déclamatoires, des épisodes concertants et des épisodes contrapuntiques d’une éblouissante diversité. Les somptueuses créations polychorales de Benevolo ont durablement marqué les esprits. Au XVIIIe siècle, O. Pitoni et G. Chiti en Italie, mais aussi J. F. Reichardt et C. F. C. Fasch à Berlin les ont érigées en modèle, jusqu’à influencer Mendelssohn dans son Hora est à seize voix.

À Rome, deux institutions musicales sont principalement liées à la papauté : la Cappella Sistina et la Cappella Giulia. Fondée en 1473 par Sixte IV, la chapelle Sixtine est la chapelle privée des papes. Elle comptait, au XVIIe siècle, trente-cinq chanteurs venus de toute l’Europe, célèbres pour la rivalité parfois violente qui les opposait. À cette institution était adjoint un scriptorium très actif, grâce auquel leur répertoire nous est aujourd’hui bien connu. Sa rivale, la chapelle Julienne, que Palestrina a dirigée à deux reprises, servait aux offices publics à Saint-Pierre. Fondée en 1513 par Julien II, elle réunit moins de chantres, mais se voit adjointe une manécanterie. Son répertoire se distingue de celui de la Sixtine par l’emploi de l’orgue pour l’accompagnement et l’ornement des célébrations. Le plus célèbre des organistes de Saint-Pierre fut certainement Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643). Né à Ferrare, sa carrière le mène à Florence, auprès de Ferdinand II de Médicis, puis à Rome. Il a laissé, outre diverses compositions vocales, pas moins de huit recueils de pièces instrumentales.

LE CONCERT SPIRITUEL
Tout à la fois claveciniste, organiste, pianiste, chanteur, compositeur, chef de chœur et chef d’orchestre, Hervé Niquet est l’une des personnalités musicales les plus inventives de ces dernières années, reconnu notamment comme un spécialiste éminent du répertoire français de l’ère baroque à Claude Debussy.
Le Concert Spirituel fut la première société de concerts privés en France. Fondée au XVIIIe siècle, elle s’éteint avec la Révolution française. Son nom est repris par Hervé Niquet lorsqu’il fonde son ensemble sur instruments anciens en 1987, dans le but de faire revivre les grandes œuvres du répertoire français jouées à la cour de Versailles.
Il crée le Concert Spirituel en 1987 avec pour ambition de faire revivre le grand motet français. En trente ans, la formation s’est imposée comme une référence incontournable dans l’interprétation du répertoire baroque. Dans le même esprit et postulant qu’il n’y a qu’une musique française sans aucune rupture tout au long des siècles, Hervé Niquet dirige les grands orchestres internationaux avec lesquels il explore les répertoires du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle. Son esprit pionnier dans la redécouverte des œuvres de cette période l’amène à participer à la création du Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française à Venise en 2009, avec lequel il mène à bien de nombreux projets. Hervé Niquet est directeur musical du Chœur de la Radio flamande et premier chef invité du Brussels Philharmonic. Sous sa direction, ces deux formations sont très impliquées dans la collection discographique des cantates du Prix de Rome sous l’égide du Palazzetto Bru Zane, ainsi que des opéras inédits. Sa démarche comprend aussi une grande implication personnelle dans des actions pédagogiques auprès de jeunes musiciens (Académie d’Ambronay, Jeune Orchestre de l’Abbaye aux Dames, Schola Cantorum, Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, McGill University à Montréal, etc.).
L’ensemble est aujourd’hui l’un des plus prestigieux orchestres baroques français, invité chaque année au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, à la Philharmonie de Paris et au Château de Versailles ainsi que dans les plus grandes salles internationales comme le Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, l’Opéra de Tokyo, le Barbican, le Wigmore Hall ou le Royal Albert Hall de Londres. À l’origine de projets ambitieux et originaux depuis sa fondation, l’ensemble s’est spécialisé dans l’interprétation de la musique sacrée française, se consacrant parallèlement à la redécouverte d’un patrimoine lyrique injustement tombé dans l’oubli : Andromaque de Grétry, Callirhoé de Destouches, Proserpine de Lully, Sémélé de Marais, Le Carnaval de Venise de Campra, Sémiramis de Catel, La Toison d’or de Vogel, Les Mystères d’Isis de Mozart et encore Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour de Rameau. Largement récompensé pour ses productions et enregistrements – Edison Award, Echo Klassik Award et Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros –, Le Concert Spirituel enregistre, depuis 2015, exclusivement chez Alpha Classics. Ont déjà paru Don Quichotte chez la duchesse de Boismortier (DVD, collection Château de Versailles) et quatre programmes discographiques réunissant les Gloria et Magnificat de Vivaldi, les Requiem de Cherubini et Plantade ainsi que Persée de Lully (version 1770) et Le Messie de Haendel (version 1754).

Ugolini, Benevolo and Lorenzani occupied a prominent position in the three hundred pages he gave me. These three composers had all been associated with San Luigi dei Francesi, the parish church of French residents in Rome. And it was as I read through this kilo of scores that I felt the impact of my second encounter, with Benevolo! One might imagine that these masses and motets for eight, sixteen or twenty-four voices were merely a demonstration of grandiloquent decibels intended to attract the faithful and fill the church benches. From the inside, though, each singer has to defend his or her part; complex, to be sure, but, oh bliss, always very jubilant and grateful for the voice. And suddenly there comes a surge of sensuality and sweetness. Complexity and learning are forgotten and give way to an immense generosity. Benevolo produced the same effect on me as a well-known Frenchman, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, without the powerful preciosity that is so typically Parisian! Since a recording of motets for two choirs made twenty years ago, I have constantly tried to show that Benevolo is one of those great forgotten Italian geniuses. Well, now my dream has been fulfilled with a team of musicians galvanised by music that totally surpasses us. Thank you, Jean Lionnet and Orazio Benevolo. Hervé Niquet

POLYCHORAL SPLENDOURS OF THE COUNTER-REFORMATION BY DENIS MORRIER Although it was sacked by the imperial armies in 1527, the ‘Eternal City’ underwent a genuine renaissance during the second half of the sixteenth century, under the impetus of the CounterReformation. This vast movement of ‘reconquest’, at once religious, ideological and political, followed the directives defined by the Council of Trent (1545-63). The place of music in the liturgy was reconsidered. The conciliar acts reaffirmed the primacy of plainchant, the repertory of monophonic melodies for liturgical use inherited from the Gregorian tradition, which was then restored to circulation by ambitious publishing projects such as the editions of the Typographia Medicaea produced at the instigation of Paul V Borghese in 1614. In addition, the Council raised the polyphonic style of Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-94) to the status of a veritable model of ideally Catholic music, satisfying the twin requirements of textual intelligibility and the edification of the faithful. The Council’s resolutions were to promote the development of new techniques and of a modern aesthetic which we now call ‘Baroque’. The mission of the artists engaged in the Counter-Reformation was not only to edify the faithful, but also to seduce and dazzle them. The liturgical music of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) perfectly embodies this dual vocation. His career took him from Cremona to Mantua and thence to Venice, where he directed the musical establishment (cappella) of St Mark’s Basilica from 1613 until his death. His Venetian compositions raised to their apogee the techniques forged by his predecessors at St Mark’s, Adriaan Willaert and Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli: the ‘dialogic’ style mixing voices and instruments (the stile concertato) and the polyphonic layout in space of a number of different choirs (cori spezzati). The musicians of the Roman cappelle swiftly appropriated these emblematic devices of the stile moderno.

This disc is the result of two encounters. First of all with Jean Lionnet, a researcher at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Thirty years ago, Jean entrusted me with several scores copied by him in the days when he spent hours, at the Vatican Library, transcribing in longhand manuscripts that were not permitted to leave the library precincts. Fifty years ago, none of today’s ‘soft copy’ technologies existed.
Other Roman cappelle were important centres of musical creation, among them those of St John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore and San Luigi dei Francesi. In the seventeenth century, these churches vied with each other in splendour on the feasts of their respective patron saints. On such occasions, three ‘extraordinary’ services were given at which it was customary to assemble numerous musicians, both singers and instrumentalists, to join the ‘ordinary’ musicians. These sumptuous liturgies were generally performed by several vocal and instrumental choirs. André Maugars, in his Réponse faite à un curieux sur le sentiment de la musique en Italie, written in Rome on 1 October 1639, describes the way the musicians were arranged in the church of La Minerva on the feast of St Dominic. There were ten cori : two in the fixed galleries situated on either side of the choir of the church, and eight others symmetrically distributed along the nave, on palchi (platforms) erected for the occasion. Each additional gallery was equipped with a positive organ. Maugars also mentions other instruments, accompanying the voices or performing instrumental pieces. To enable all these musicians, despite their distance from each other, to perform their parts absolutely simultaneously, it was customary to call on capi di coro (choir leaders): these ‘time-beaters’, placed in the front of each gallery, looked 20
at each other in order to synchronise their beat, while the singers and instrumentalists were placed behind them. The German composer and theorist Michael Praetorius had an eloquent illustration of this type of layout engraved on the title page of his ‘Theatrum Instrumentorum’ (Wolfenbüttel: 1620). Orazio Benevolo or Benevoli (1605-72) was one of the most remarkable creators of these outsized polychoral monuments. He was the son of a French pastry chef, Robert Bénevot, who had come to settle in Rome at the end of the sixteenth century. Since it belonged to the French community in Rome, the family attended the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. Orazio was admitted to its cappella as a choirboy, then climbed up the hierarchical ladder to become maestro di cappella in 1638. He left the job in 1644, and held various positions until 1646, when he obtained the directorship of the Capella Giulia at St Peter’s, a position he held until his death. Benevolo left an abundant output, with no fewer than thirty-four motets for various forces, including Regna terrae scored for twelve sopranos, divided into six choirs of two singers, each with its own continuo accompaniment. He also composed twelve settings of the Magnificat, ranging from eight to twenty-four voices, including one for sixteen voices laid out as a quadruple chorus. His sixteen-part Mass ‘Si Deus pro Nobis’ is thought to have been composed in 1660: several copies of it have been preserved in both Italy and Germany. It introduces a variety of stylistic devices in the course of its multiple contrasting sections, alternating between impressive declamatory tuttis, concertato sections and contrapuntal episodes of dazzling diversity. Benevolo’s sumptuous polychoral creations left a lasting impression. In the eighteenth century, Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni and Girolamo Chiti in Italy and J. F. Reichardt and C. F. C. Fasch in Berlin set them up as models, which even influenced Mendelssohn’s sixteen-part Hora est.

In Rome, two musical institutions were closely linked to the Papacy: the Cappella Sistina and the Cappella Giulia. Founded in 1473 by Sixtus IV, the Sistine was and is the private chapel of the popes. In the seventeenth century, it numbered thirty-five singers from all over Europe, famed for the sometimes violent rivalry between them. The institution also had a very active scriptorium, thanks to which these musicians’ repertory is now well known to us. Its rival, the Cappella Giulia, of which Palestrina was twice director, sang at public services in St Peter’s. Founded in 1513 by Julius II (whence its name, Julian Chapel), it boasted fewer singers, but had its own choir school. Its repertory differed from that of the Cappella Sistina in that it used the organ to accompany and ornament celebrations. The most famous organist of St Peter’s was certainly Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643), a native of Ferrara whose career took him to Florence (in the service of Ferdinando II de’ Medici), then to Rome. In addition to various vocal compositions, he left no fewer than eight collections of instrumental pieces.

Harpsichordist, organist, pianist, singer, composer, choral and orchestral conductor, Hervé Niquet is one of the most inventive musical personalities of recent years. He is acknowledged, notably, as an eminent specialist in the French repertory, from the baroque period to Claude Debussy.
The Concert Spirituel was the first private concert association in France. It was founded in the early eighteenth century and disappeared at the time of the French Revolution. Hervé Niquet chose to take up its name in 1987 when he founded his period-instrument ensemble with the aim of breathing new life into the great works of the French repertory performed at the court of Versailles.
He founded Le Concert Spirituel in 1987 with the aim of reviving the French grand motet. In thirty years, the group has become a benchmark for the interpretation of the Baroque repertory. In the same spirit, true to his postulate that there is only one French music, which runs across the centuries without a break, Hervé Niquet conducts the leading international orchestras, with which he explores the repertories of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His pioneering zeal in favour of the rediscovery of the works of this period prompted him to participate in the creation in 2009 of the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française in Venice, with which he realises numerous projects. Hervé Niquet is music director of the Flemish Radio Choir and principal guest conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic. Under his direction, these two formations are heavily involved in the series of recordings of cantatas written for the Prix de Rome, released under the auspices of the Palazzetto Bru Zane, and of previously unrecorded operas.

In diesen rund 300 Seiten, die er mir anvertraute, waren Ugolini, Benevolo und Lorenzani gut platziert. Diese drei Komponisten hatten in San Luigi dei Francesi gearbeitet, also in der Pfarrgemeinde der in Rom lebenden Franzosen. Und als ich dieses Kilo Noten las, war die Begegnung mit Benevolo ein Schock! Man kann sich vorstellen, dass diese 8-, 16- oder 24stimmigen Messen und Motetten nichts als eine Demonstration hochtrabender Dezibels war, um die Gläubigen anzuziehen und die Bänke der Kirche zu füllen. Von innen gesehen, muss jeder Sänger einen zwar sicher komplexen, aber zum Glück auch immer sehr vokalen, mitreißenden Part vertreten. Plötzlich wohnt man einer Woge von Sinnlichkeit und Lieblichkeit bei. Schwierigkeit und Gelehrtheit sind zugunsten einer ungeheuren Großzügigkeit vergessen. Dieser Benevolo machte auf mich denselben Eindruck wie ein sehr bekannter Franzose, nämlich Marc-Antoine Charpentier, allerdings ohne dessen preziös kräftige, so pariserische Seite! Nach einer Einspielung der doppelchörigen Motetten vor 20 Jahren wollte ich immer unter Beweis stellen, dass Benevolo eines der großen vergessenen Genies Italiens ist. Nun ist der Traum mit einem Musikerteam Wirklichkeit geworden, das von dieser weit über uns hinausgehenden Musik fasziniert ist. Danke, Jean Lionnet und Orazio Benevolo. Hervé Niquet 24
MEHRCHÖRIGE PRACHT DER GEGENREFORMATION VON DENIS MORRIER Obwohl die „ewige Stadt“ 1527 von den kaiserlichen Truppen geplündert wurde, erlebte sie dank der Gegenreformation in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jh. eine wahre Wiedergeburt. Die Richtlinien dieser großen, sowohl religiösen, ideologischen als auch politischen Bewegung zur „Rückeroberung“ waren vom Konzil von Trient (1545-1563) festgesetzt worden. Die Rolle der Musik in der Liturgie wurde damals neu überdacht. Die Dekrete des Konzils bekräftigten die Vorherrschaft des Gregorianischen Chorals. Diese liturgischen Monodien, die Erbe des gregorianischen Repertoires sind, wurden durch ehrgeizige Publikationsprojekte wieder eingeführt. Davon zeugen die Editionen der Typographia Medicaea, die 1614 von Paul V. Borghese veranlasst wurden. Im Übrigen setzte das Konzil den polyphonen Stil von Pierluigi da Palestrina (ca. 1525-1594) als wahres Modell einer idealen katholischen Musik ein, die die Forderungen nach einem verständlichen Text einerseits und nach Erbauung der Gläubigen andererseits erfüllt. Die Beschlüsse des Konzils förderten die Entwicklung neuer Techniken und einer modernen Ästhetik, die heute „Barock“ genannt wird. Die für die Gegenreformation arbeitenden Künstler hatten die Aufgabe, die Gläubigen nicht nur zu erbauen, sie mussten sie auch überzeugen und beeindrucken. Die liturgische Musik Claudio Monteverdis (15671643) verkörpert diese doppelte Bestimmung in idealer Weise. Seine Karriere führte ihn von Cremona nach Mantua und schließlich nach Venedig, wo er von 1613 bis zu seinem Tod die Cappella musicale der Markus-Kirche leitete. Seine venezianischen Kompositionen bringen die von seinen Vorgängern Adriaan Willaert, Andrea und Giovanni Gabrieli entwickelten Techniken zu ihrem Höhepunkt: die „dialoghafte“ Komposition, die Stimmen und Instrumente kombiniert (Stile concertato), und die polyphone Aufstellung verschiedener, auf den Raum aufgeteilter Chöre (Cori spezzati ). Die Musiker der römischen Kapellen sollten sich rasch diese emblematischen Methoden des Stile moderno aneignen. 25

Diese CD ist das Resultat zweier Begegnungen, deren erste mit Jean Lionnet, Forscher am Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, stattfand. Jean vertraute mir vor 30 Jahren mehrere von ihm eigenhändig kopierte Noten an, nachdem er viele Stunden, in der Bibliothek des Vatikan, damit verbracht hatte, Handschriften zu transkribieren, die man sich nicht ausleihen konnte. Vor fünfzig Jahren gab es noch keinerlei Techniken zur „heimlichen“ Anfertigung von Kopien.
Auch andere römische Kapellen waren bedeutende Zentren der Musik: San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore, San Luigi dei Francesi. Im 17. Jh. wetteiferten diese Kirchen miteinander durch die bei den Feiern für ihre heiligen Schutzpatrone entfaltete Pracht. Bei diesen Gelegenheiten wurden drei außerordentliche Gottesdienste gelesen, bei denen es üblich war, viele Musiker, Sänger und Instrumentalisten anzustellen, die zu den ordentlichen Musikern hinzukamen. Diese prunkvollen Gottesdienste wurden im Allgemeinen von mehreren Vokal- und Instrumentalchören ausgeführt. André Maugars beschrieb in seiner Réponse faite à un curieux sur le sentiment de la musique en Italie [Antwort auf die Frage eines Neugierigen über das Musikverständnis in Italien] am 1. Oktober 1639 in Rom die Vorrichtungen in der Kirche La Minerva am Festtag des heiligen Domenico. Es gab sechs Cori: zwei auf den festen Emporen, die sich auf jeder Seite des Kirchenchores befanden, und acht, die symmetrisch entlang des Kirchenschiffs auf eigens für diese Gelegenheit gebauten Palchi aufgestellt waren. Jede zusätzliche Empore hatte ein Orgelpositiv. Er erwähnt auch andere Instrumente, die als 26
Begleitung für die Stimmen dienten oder Stücke interpretierten. Damit alle Musiker ihre Stimmen trotz der Entfernung simultan ausführen konnten, war es üblich, Capi di Coro einzusetzen: Diese „Taktschläger“, die vor jeder Empore standen, sahen einander gegenseitig an, um ihre Taktschläge aufeinander abzustimmen, während die Sänger und Musiker hinter ihnen standen. Der deutsche Komponist und Theoretiker Michael Praetorius ließ eine vielsagende Illustration einer solchen Aufstellung auf das Frontispiz seines Theatrum Instrumentorum (Wolfenbüttel, 1620) drucken. Orazio Benevolo oder Benevoli (1605-1672) war einer der bemerkenswertesten Schöpfer dieser außergewöhnlichen mehrchörigen Monumente. Er war der Sohn eines französischen Konditors, Robert Bénevot, der sich am Ende des 16. Jh. in Rom niedergelassen hatte. Da die Familie zur französischen Gemeinschaft Roms gehörte, ging sie in die Kirche San Luigi dei Francesi. Orazio wurde als Ministrant in diese Kapelle aufgenommen und stieg dort die hierarchische Karriereleiter nach oben, bis er 1638 Maestro di Cappella wurde. 1644 verließ er diese Stellung und übernahm bis 1646 verschiedene Funktionen: Er erhielt die Leitung der Cappella Giulia an der Peterskirche, einen Posten, den er bis zu seinem Tod innehatte. Benevolo hinterließ ein reichhaltiges Werk, das nicht weniger als vierunddreißig Motetten für verschiedene Besetzungen enthält, darunter Regna terrae für zwölf Soprane, die auf sechs Chöre von je zwei Sängerinnen aufgeteilt sind, wobei jeder seine eigene Basso-continuo-Begleitung hat. Er komponierte außerdem zwölf Fassungen des Magnificat für acht bis vierundzwanzig Stimmen, darunter eine für sechzehn Stimmen in einem vierfachen Chor. Seine sechzehnstimmige Messe Si Deus pro nobis soll 1660 komponiert worden sein: Von ihr sind sowohl in Italien als auch in Deutschland mehrere Kopien erhalten. Sie verwendet verschiedene Kompositionsweisen im Laufe vielfältiger kontrastreicher Abschnitte, wobei eindrucksvolle, deklamatorische Tutti konzertanten bzw. kontrapunktischen Episoden von bestechender Vielfalt gegenübergestellt werden. Die prächtigen mehrchörigen Werke Benevolos haben die Geister dauerhaft geprägt. Im 18. Jh. wurden sie für O. Pitoni und G. Chiti in Italien aber auch für J.F. Reichardt und C.F.C. Fasch in Berlin zu Modellen, und beeinflussten selbst Mendelssohn in seinem sechzehnstimmigen Hora est. 27

In Rom sind vor allem zwei Musikkapellen mit dem Papsttum verbunden: die Cappella Sistina und die Cappella Giulia. Die 1473 von Sixtus IV. gegründete Sixtinische Kapelle ist die Privatkapelle der Päpste. Sie bestand im 17. Jh. aus fünfunddreißig Sängern, die aus ganz Europa kamen und für ihre schon fast brutale Rivalität untereinander bekannt waren. Zu dieser Institution kam ein sehr aktives Scriptorium hinzu, dem es zu verdanken ist, dass uns ihr Repertoire heute bekannt ist. Ihre Rivalin, die Julianische Kapelle, die zweimal von Palestrina geleitet wurde, diente für die öffentlichen Gottesdienste der Peterskirche. Sie wurde 1513 von Julius II. gegründet und hatte weniger Sänger, dafür aber war ein Knabenchor angeschlossen. Ihr Repertoire unterscheidet sich von dem der Sixtinischen Kapelle durch die Verwendung einer Orgel zur Begleitung und zur Ausschmückung von Feierlichkeiten. Der berühmteste Organist der Peterskirche war sicher Girolamo Frescobaldi (15831643). In Ferrara geboren, führte ihn seine Karriere nach Florenz zu Ferdinand II. de’ Medici und später nach Rom. Er hinterließ abgesehen von Vokalwerken mindestens acht Sammlungen von Instrumentalstücken.

Hervé Niquet ist sowohl Cembalist, Organist, Pianist, Sänger, Komponist, Chorleiter als auch Dirigent. Er ist eine der findigsten Persönlichkeiten der Musikszene der letzten Jahre und wird besonders als hervorragender Spezialist des französischen Repertoires von der Barockzeit bis Claude Debussy anerkannt.
Le Concert Spirituel war die erste private Konzertgesellschaft in Frankreich. Sie wurde im 18. Jh. gegründet und endete mit der Französischen Revolution. Hervé Niquet übernahm diesen Namen, als er 1987 sein Ensemble für alte Musikinstrumente gründete, mit dem Ziel, die großen am Hof von Versaillles aufgeführten Werke des französischen Repertoires wieder aufleben zu lassen.
1987 gründet er Le Concert Spirituel mit dem Ehrgeiz, die große französische Motette wieder aufleben zu lassen. In den dreißig Jahren seines Bestehens hat sich das Ensemble als unumgänglicher Orientierungspunkt für die Interpretation des barocken Repertoires durchgesetzt. Hervé Niquet geht davon aus, dass es im Laufe der Jahrhunderte bruchlos nur eine französische Musik gibt, und dirigiert in diesem Sinne große internationale Orchester, mit denen er die verschiedenen Repertoires des 19. Jh. und des beginnenden 20. Jh. interpretiert. Sein Pioniergeist brachte ihn bei der Wiederentdeckung von Werken aus dieser Zeit dazu, 2009 an der Gründung des Palazzetto Bru Zane teilzunehmen, einem Zentrum für französische Musik der Romantik in Venedig, mit dem er zahlreiche Projekte zuwege bringt. Hervé Niquet ist musikalischer Leiter des flämischen Rundfunkchors und erster Gastdirigent der Brüsseler Philharmoniker. Unter seiner Leitung sind beide bei den CD-Sammlungen unveröffentlichter Opern einerseits und der Kantaten des Prix de Rome unter der Schirmherrschaft des Palazzetto Bru Zane andererseits sehr engagiert.
Das Ensemble, das heute eines der renommiertesten Barockorchester Frankreichs ist, wird jedes Jahr ins Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, die Philharmonie de Paris und ins Schloss von Versailles eingeladen, aber auch in die größten internationalen Konzerthäuser wie das Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, das Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel, die Oper von Tokio, das Barbican Centre, die Wigmore Hall oder die Royal Albert Hall in London.
