AUGMENTATION BY MEANS OF DIMINUTION What is it that urges a musician to add variations to a given composition? All frontispieces and forewords to editions of works for the theorbo, guitar and lute comprise not only instructions on how to play arpeggios, trills and legatos, but also declarations that players should add their own diminutions and embellishments.

To precisely what extent this is possible without distorting the original spirit of the piece is a delicate matter involving taste and measure. People have meditated on the subject of beauty and its underlying rules since the seventeenth century, and in various periods have attempted to establish universal laws in keeping with social changes and artistic tendencies.

The infinite fluctuations of a given line and its potential transformations are an essential aspect of the baroque aesthetic. The idea of saying exactly the same thing twice over was an anathema to all spheres of 17th century art.

In a constant state of flux, Nature never repeats itself and imperfect man in his fragility no longer perceives himself at the centre of the universe.

In this dramatic change of perspective the creative act implies engagement in a much wider scenario in constant, evanescent movement. As the Greek masters taught, “everything flows� and this process, this transformation with its sallies and retreats, in music becomes the infinite possibilities for rewriting and embellishing a melody. Every dance of the age is like a canvas that can be painted with an infinite range of

different colours, thereby achieving boundless nuances through different combinations of the same material.

Delving into Sound and Performance Practice This album is based on reworked versions of the extant dances for guitar in alfabeto, the notational system that was used to indicate chords and rhythms. Imagining these brief compositions as the woof and warp of future improvisations was like taking on a challenge with time: delving into a language that is several centuries old, without preconceived ideas; and attempting to use all the subtleties and nuances of rhythm, harmony and melody typical of the baroque period. To this day many of the extravaganzas found in the works for guitar, theorbo and lute are viewed from a romantically middleclass perspective that tends to soften and sweeten the sound, or indeed correct it in performance. Roman music of this period was full of dissonant harmonies, of glissandi on the string, of strange rhythms and effects that come across as highly modern (see track 1).

For our part we have tried to combine the sound of percussion and plucked instruments in relation to the character of each piece, be it of folk or erudite origin. In so doing we have gleaned helpful hints from period illustrations, as well as musical and historical sources. And above all, we were not afraid of doing so.

DEXTERITY AND THE STYLUS PHANTASTICUS The music of the 1600s is interwoven with a constellation of melodies, bassi ostinati and harmonic devices. Almost all of it derives from folk music, and in particular from the melodies sung by streets musicians. The composers of the period borrowed this material, adding their own variations, passages and diminutions, which in time provided a substantial part of the basic instrumental repertoire of the 17th century.

The popularity of these works was naturally mirrored in literature. There is a pamphlet by Giulio Cesare Croce that describes a hungry suitor equipped with a guitar who woos a cook in order to obtain food [see p. 12]. And she in her turn wants songs from her swain. In the course of their exchange mention is made of Girometta, La bella Franceschina, Ruggiero, and in the frontispiece also of La Monica, with the rarely used alternative title “E tanto tempo hormai” (“It’s been so long”). The Bolognese burlesque poet Bartolomeo Bocchini, known as Zan Muzzinà, wrote a sonnet included in the collection La piva dissonante (1644) in which he portrays a woman intent on distracting a man by dancing and singing so that she can extract money from his pocket.

The piece comprises citations of a Bergamasca, Spagnoletta, Pavaniglia, Gagliarda, Tordiglione, Pass’ mezzo, Ruggiero, Corrente, Moresca and Il Ballo del Granduca – the only element that is not of folk origin.

These dances and melodies were not only commonly heard in the streets, since theatre compa-

nies also played them in courts and private residences. For example, the successful lead actor and playwright Giovan Battista Andreini, who in time was to perform for the French court, devoted an entire scene of his comedy Lo Schiavetto (1612) to dances of this sort. The main character, along with others named Rondone and Succiola, deliver songs and dances in the shape of a Calata, a Villan di Spagna, a Bergamasca, and the Sfessania, the like of which Callot captured for posterity in his famous engravings [see p. 16]. Andreini’s own wife, Virginia, was an expert guitarist who also took part in shows of this sort.

— During the first half of the 1600s, the guitar and the theorbo rapidly became the most widespread plucked string instruments, to the extent that in 1628 Vincenzo Giustiniani, in his Discorso sopra la musica de’ suoi tempi, remarked that “throughout Italy, and especially in Naples, the Spanish guitar along with the Theorbo would appear to have completely ousted the Lute”.

There was indeed a considerable increase in the collections of music for these two instruments during the period in question. Almost all of them aimed at providing the amateur player with a method for learning to play alone, and often they turned to the same melodies, which were evidently very popular. They were printed using the simplified tablature system, with the guitar parts in Alfabeto notation, where a single letter of the alphabet corresponded to a par-

7 English ticular chord. To convey their expressive intent, composers soon began to introduce other signs that indicated notes extraneous to the chord, and this in its turn led to what Foscarini called the dissonant Alphabet, and a few years later Carlo Calvi described as the Alfabeto falso: the title chosen for the first CD released by “I Bassifondi”, which revolved around this very repertoire.

The Alfabeto ended up by indicating the accompaniment both for folk songs, possibly in dialect, and also for more refined texts, including arias, canzonettas and even lauds for singing in oratories. As a basic framework, it was often only useful for those who already knew the melody mentioned at the start of the piece. What made a real difference was the improvisational skill of the performer, whose accomplishment reflected specific codes of practice that today’s musicians must try to reconstruct. Such is our intent with this recording, which concentrates in particular on 17th century musical circles in Rome.

The huge amount of music written for solo theorbo or guitar, and the number of printed editions by publishers such as Verovio and Robletti, bear eloquent witness to the popularity of the two instruments in Roman musical circles of the time.

Moreover, there were also plenty of arias, canzonettas and villanellas that required the theorbo or the guitar for the accompaniment. Singers, especially the women, often accompanied themselves as they sang: to wit, the delightful drawing by the Roman painter Ottavio Leoni of a female singer with a guitar, now kept in the British Museum; or the portrayal of the same subject, currently part

of the Metropolitan Museum collection, painted

by Simon Vouet during his long stay in Rome.

The popularity of the Spanish guitar first took root in Naples, and soon spread throughout Italy.

In Rome the phenomenon had certain distinctive features, as we know from an edition of works for one or more voices by the Spanish composer Juan de Arañes, published in 1624. Here the accompaniment envisaged the guitar a la usanza romana, a practice that probably consisted in a particular type of tuning.

— One of the most popular melodies from the late Renaissance period through to the early 18th century was the Girometta. Back in 1559 the Bolognese composer Filippo Azzaiolo used it in his Secondo libro di villotte del fiore. The success of the melody was not confined to Italy, however: during the first half of the 1600s the English poet Patrick Carey insisted that a ballad of his (O permit that my sadness) should be sung “to the Italian tune, called Girometta”. The most famous composition based on the melody is Frescobaldi’s Capriccio on Girometta, included in his Fiori musicali. The best-known version of the less-familiar melody Aurilla mia is by Kapsberger, though the tune also features in other collections, including those of Giovanni Stefani (1622), Pietro Millioni (1627) and Matteo Coferati (1689), sometimes with a different text (Tirinto mio, tu mi feristi).

Nothing is known about Tommaso Marchetti, who describes himself as “Roman” in a collection printed in Rome in 1660, considered almost an exact replica of an earlier collection compiled

by Pietro Millioni in the 1620s. Mal francese mi tormenta (The French pox torments me) clearly refers to a disease that various countries attributed to other nations: the Italians and the English to the French, and the French to Naples (“mal napolitain”), although the Veronese physician Girolamo Fracastoro had already coined the term “sifilide”. From 1585 there is evidence of a song on the subject, which may or may not have used the same melody. That same year Tommaso Garzoni, in La piazza universale di tutte le professioni del mondo, comments on onlookers who listen to a street singer “cantar un sonetto del mal Francese, et una Siciliana appresso” (singing a ballad about the French pox, and straight after a Siciliana).

The Aria della Monica (Nun’s aria), performed here in the version provided by Marchetti, was a melody used by a great many musicians, starting with Frescobaldi, who adopted it as the basis for a Mass. There is evidence to suggest that it actually originated in Germany: back in 1574 it featured in the Teutsch Lautenbuch compiled by the lutenist Melchior Neusidler, and four years later it was included in a French collection with a text regarding a young woman who does not wish to become a nun. Starting with Gorzanis in 1579, for many years Italian composers referred to this melody as the Ballo tedesco (German dance), or Alemanna, a term that continued well beyond guitarist Girolamo Montesardo’s introduction of the term La Monica in his collection of 1606.

Little has come down to us about another Roman composer and guitarist, Francesco Valdambrini, who in 1646 and 1647 published two

collections of music for guitar in which he paid homage to the mastery of Kapsberger, underlining the importance of virtuoso improvisation: sounding well “consiste più in destrezza che in rigore, perche volendovi andare con rigore di musica ò si darà in asprezze, overo in seccaggini” (consists more in dexterity than in rules, because trying to observe the rules of music results either in harshness or in tedium), such that “la vaghezza e perfetione consisteno nelle variationi de’ stili” (charm and perfection consist in the variations of styles).

Organist at the church of S. Luigi dei Francesi, Arcangelo Lori, also known as Arcangelo del Leuto, was another composer born and trained in Rome. He corresponds to the “S(ignor) Arcangelo” indicated as the author of a Toccata belonging to a manuscript collection kept in Perugia that features the name of its owner on the frontispiece: Gioseppe Doni, a gentleman who was certainly in close contact with the Neapolitan composer Andrea Falconieri, whose works prevail in the above-mentioned collection.

Singer, virtuoso harpist and composer, Marco Marazzoli lived in Rome under the patronage of the Barberini family. He also wrote works for the theatre and oratorios, plus a considerable number of solo voice cantatas, of which No ch’io non piangerò (No, I shall not weep) is a significant example.

Girolamo Kapsberger, “the German theorbo player” was a prominent figure in Roman musical circles of the early 1600s, alongside Frescobaldi.

His father was Austrian, his mother Venetian, and although he was born and trained in Venice, he

9 English Menu was Roman by adoption. Pietro Della Valle refers to him as an example of the superiority of modern music with respect to that of antiquity. He also wrote vocal music and oratorios, including I pastori di Bettelemme, which contains an allusion to the sordellina, a sort of baroque bagpipe very similar to the French musette. As a musician Kapsberger represented the stylus phantasticus that was widespread in northern Europe, and according to another German who had become Roman, the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, was also common in Italy. The style was based on improvisation, surprise, technical dexterity and free forms: the musical equivalent of the concept of wonder that painters and poets of the age strove to achieve. In fact this stylus proved to be longlived: Johann Mattheson referred to it in 1739, talking about Frescobaldi alongside Bernardo Pasquini, the Tuscan composer who moved to Rome where he made a name for himself as a master of improvisation. A piece by Pasquini is included in this recording.

It was Athanasius Kircher who made the first transcriptions of the arie turchesche that his confreres in southern Italy sent to him at the Collegio Romano (in the Magnes, the Phonurgia Nova and the Musurgia). The original aim of these pieces was to provide an antidote for those who had been bitten by a tarantula – or such was the claim. In actual fact they are the earliest examples of tarantellas, described by Kircher as a way of healing through music. Alongside the image of the spider, in the Magnes he also introduced the motto Musica sola mei Superest medicina Veneni,

music alone is medicine for my venom: according to the credence of the time, frenzied dance and the resulting dilation of the pores would allow the venom to leave the body through evaporation. The rhythm was fundamental, calling for the presence of percussion instruments. Kircher listed various instruments (drum, plucked and bowed string instruments, recorder, trumpet, bagpipes), adding that they should “vary according to the poison�.

Widespread throughout the Mediterranean, the dance derived from Pagan rituals, the legacy of early Dionysian cults, and had always embodied therapeutic intent: that of freeing the individual of inner distress by means of inebriation, in order to return to a state of social normality. And thus it remained. The spider is simply a metaphor or a symbol.

DIMINUER POUR AUGMENTER Qu’est-ce qui pousse un musicien à ajouter des variations à une pièce ? Toutes les pages de titres, les avis au lecteur mis au devant des œuvres pour théorbe, guitare et luth, en plus de donner des indications techniques sur la manière de faire les arpèges, les trilles ou les liaisons, invitent l’interprète à ajouter des diminutions et des embellissements. Ce que doit être la limite, la mesure, le bon goût qui permet de demeurer vraisemblable sans troubler l’esprit de la pièce — voilà qui est chose subtile, délicate. Au XVIIe siècle comme aujourd’hui, l’homme s’est interrogé sur le Beau et ses canons, et à toutes les époques il a cherché à fixer des règles universelles en accord avec les changements sociaux et les courants artistiques.

Les replis infinis qu’on peut imprimer à une ligne, ses transformations, constituent un aspect fondamental de l’esthétique baroque. La maxime « Ne pas répéter deux fois la même chose » englobe tous les arts au XVIIe siècle. La Nature n’est jamais identique à elle-même et change continuellement, et l’homme, avec sa fragilité et sa finitude, est conscient qu’il n’est plus au centre de l’univers.

Ce dramatique changement de perspective requiert de l’acte créateur qu’il participe d’un mouvement plus vaste, aussi bien éternel qu’éphémère. « Tout passe », enseignaient les philosophes grecs, et ce flux, cette métamorphose, ce repli sur soi et hors de soi, est ce qui, en musique, se traduit par les possibilités infinies de réécrire et d’embellir une mélodie. À l’époque, chaque danse devient une

toile sur laquelle on peint à chaque fois avec de nouvelles couleurs, faisant varier le même matériau avec des nuances infinies.

Recherche de sonorités et approches interprétatives Le sujet de cet album est la réélaboration des danses pour guitare qui nous sont parvenues en alfabeto, c’est-à-dire en une version où seuls sont notés les accords et le rythme. Concevoir ces brèves compositions comme des canevas sur lesquels improviser a été comme accepter de relever un défi avec le temps : entrer dans un langage vieux de plusieurs siècles, sans a-priori, en cherchant à exploiter toutes les nuances rythmiques, harmoniques et mélodiques de la littérature musicale baroque. Encore aujourd’hui, de nombreuses extravagances présentes dans les œuvres pour guitare, théorbe et luth sont vues d’un œil romantique et bourgeois, qui tend à adoucir et à ramollir la réalisation ou même à corriger l’exécution. La musique romaine de cette période est pleine d’harmonies dissonantes, de glissandos, d’effets rythmiques bizarres et très modernes (cf. piste 1).

Nous avons donc cherché à mélanger les sons des cordes pincées et ceux des percussions, en fonction du caractère de chaque pièce, qu’il soit populaire ou savant. Et tout cela en suivant les suggestions des sources iconographiques, musicales et historiques, mais surtout sans craindre d’oser.

LA VIRTUOSITÉ ET LE STYLUS PHANTASTICUS En musique, le XVIIe siècle est traversé par une constellation de mélodies, de basses obstinées, de schémas harmoniques. D’origine populaire, à quelques exceptions près, ces thèmes, qu’on entendait dans les rues, entonnés par les cantimbanchi (musiciens de rue), furent l’objet d’élaborations par les compositeurs qui les soumirent à des variations, passaggi1, diminutions, à tel point que ces schémas finirent par constituer la base d’une grande partie du répertoire instrumental du XVIIe siècle.

Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, leur popularité se refléta dans la littérature. Un opuscule de Giulio Cesare Croce décrit un amant affamé (muni d’une petite guitare, comme on le voit sur l’illustration reproduite p. 12) qui courtise une cuisinière pour avoir de la nourriture ; la cuisinière, en échange, veut des chansons. Sont donc cités au fil du dialogue la Girometta, la Bella Franceschina, le Ruggiero et, sur le frontispice, La Monica, sous un titre plus rarement usité, « E tanto tempo hormai ». Un sonnet du poète burlesque bolonais Bartolomeo Bocchini, dit Zan Muzzinà, inclus dans le recueil La piva dissonante (La cornemuse dissonante, 1644), décrit une femme qui, en chantant et en dansant, cherche à distraire un homme afin de lui soustraire l’argent de sa poche : dans le sonnet sont cités Bergamasca, Spagnoletta, Pavaniglia, Gagliarda, Tordiglione, Pass’e mezzo, 1 Le mot passaggi désigne, dans la théorique musicale de l’époque, des diminutions ou autres ornementations rapides.

Ces danses et mélodies ne se diffusaient pas seulement dans les rues. Les troupes de théâtre les jouaient également dans les cours. Ainsi, le chef de troupe et dramaturge Giovan Battista Andreini (venu se produire à la cour de France) consacra une scène entière de sa comédie Lo Schiavetto (Le Petit Esclave, 1612) à ces danses.

Le protagoniste et les personnages de Rondone et Succiola chantent et dansent une Calata, un Villan di Spagna, une Bergamasca et la Sfessania que Callot immortalisa dans ses célèbres gravures [voir p. 16]. L’épouse même d’Andreini, Virginia, était une excellente guitariste et participait aux représentations également à ce titre.

nies les recueils de musique pour ces instruments. Presque tous prétendent offrir à l’amateur une méthode pour apprendre seul à en jouer, et proposent souvent les mêmes mélodies qui, à l’évidence, étaient très répandues. Elles sont imprimées à l’aide des systèmes simplifiés que sont la tablature et, en ce qui concerne la guitare, l’alfabeto, où à chaque lettre de l’alphabet correspond un accord. Bien vite, les enjeux expressifs poussèrent les compositeurs à ajouter à côté des lettres de l’alphabet des signes qui indiquaient des notes étrangères à l’accord ; ainsi naquit cet alfabeto que Foscarini appela dissonante et Carlo Calvi, quelques années, Alfabeto falso (ce n’est pas un hasard si c’est ainsi que s’intitulait le premier CD de l’ensemble I Bassifondi, qui explorait ce répertoire avec bonheur).

L’alfabeto servit aussi à indiquer l’accompagnement de textes populaires en dialecte, mais aussi amoureux ou spirituels — arie, canzonette, voire laudes à chanter pour prier. Cependant, il ne s’agissait que d’un schéma, une trame utile surtout à ceux qui connaissaient déjà la mélodie indiquée au début de la pièce. Ce qui permettait à l’interprète de se distinguer, c’était l’improvisation, suivant des codes bien définis par une pratique que les exécutants d’aujourd’hui s’efforcent de reconstituer, comme dans le présent CD qui accorde une attention particulière au XVIIe siècle romain.

Le théorbe et la guitare étaient très présents à Rome dans ces années-là, comme en attestent le nombre d’éditions produites par les imprimeurs

13 Français actifs dans la ville (Verovio, Robletti) et la vaste production de musique pour théorbe ou guitare seule, mais aussi d’arie, de canzonette et de villanelle qui prévoyaient un accompagnement par ces instruments. Les chanteurs, surtout les femmes, s’accompagnaient eux-mêmes : à cet égard, on peut se référer au délicieux dessin du peintre romain Ottavio Leoni qui représente une chanteuse avec une guitare, aujourd’hui conservé au British Museum, ou bien au tableau représentant le même sujet peint par le Français Simon Vouet durant son long séjour à Rome et conservé aujourd’hui au Metropolitan Museum.

La guitare espagnole prit son essor à Naples, mais se diffusa bien vite dans toute l’Italie. À Rome, elle avait des caractéristiques spéciales : l’Espagnol Juan de Arañes publia en 1624 un recueil de musique à une et plusieurs voix accompagnées par la guitare à la mode romaine, mode qui consistait probablement dans une manière particulière d’accorder l’instrument.

— La Girometta fut une mélodie parmi les plus populaires, que l’on retrouve dans la musique de la fin de la Renaissance jusqu’aux premières années du XVIIIe siècle. Dès 1559, on la rencontre dans le Secondo libro di villotte del fiore du bolonais Filippo Azzaiolo. Le succès de cette mélodie dépassa les frontières italiennes : dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, le poète anglais Patrick Carey indique qu’une de ses ballades (O permit that my sadness) doit se chanter « To the Italian tune called Girometta » (sur l’air italien appelé Girometta). Le Capriccio sulla Girometta

de Frescobaldi, dans les Fiori musicali, est l’œuvre la plus connue qui ait été élaborée à partir de cette mélodie. La mélodie Aurilla mia est beaucoup moins célèbre et moins répandue. La version de Kapsberger est sans doute la plus connue, mais elle se retrouve aussi dans d’autres recueils : ceux de Giovanni Stefani (1622), Pietro Millioni (1627), Matteo Coferati (1689), parfois avec un autre texte (Tirinto mio, tu mi feristi).

On ne sait rien de Tommaso Marchetti, qui se définit comme « romain » dans un recueil imprimé à Rome en 1660, considéré comme la copie quasi conforme d’un recueil de Pietro Millioni des années 1620. Mal francese mi tormenta (Un mal français me tourmente) fait allusion à la maladie appelée ainsi par les Italiens, « mal napolitain » par les Français, et « syphilis » par le médecin véronais Girolamo Fracastoro.

On trouve dès 1585 mention d’une chanson sur ce thème — et sur la même mélodie ? difficile à dire, mais c’est possible. Cette année-là, Tommaso Garzoni, dans La piazza universale di tutte le professioni del mondo, parle des spectateurs qui écoutent un cantimbanco « chantant un sonnet sur le mal français, puis une sicilienne ». À l’inverse, l’aria della Monica, ici interprétée dans la version de Marchetti, est une mélodie employée par de très nombreux musiciens, à commencer par Frescobaldi qui élabora à partir d’elle une messe. Tout laisse à penser qu’elle trouvait son origine en Allemagne. Elle apparaît dès 1574 dans le Teutsch Lautenbuch du luthiste Melchior Neusidler, et quatre ans plus tard on la retrouve dans un recueil français avec

14 un texte qui évoque une jeune fille faite religieuse contre son gré3. Pendant de nombreuses années, les compositeurs italiens ont appelé cette mélodie Ballo tedesco (à partir de Gorzanis, 1579) ou Alemanna, même après que le guitariste Girolamo Montesardo l’eut intitulée pour la première fois La Monica dans son recueil de 1606.

Les indications sur Francesco Valdambrini sont rares. Romain lui aussi, il publia en 1646 et 1647 deux importants recueils de musique pour guitare, où il rendit hommage au modèle que constituait Kapsberger et souligna l’importance de l’improvisation virtuose : bien jouer « consiste davantage en dextérité qu’en règles, parce que s’efforcer d’observer les règles en musique aboutit soit à la rudesse, soit à l’ennui », affirmant que « la beauté et perfection consistent dans les variations des styles » Arcangelo Lori, dit aussi Arcangelo del Leuto (bien qu’il fût aussi organise en l’église SaintLouis-des-Français) fut aussi un auteur romain de naissance comme de formation ; on peut l’identifier au « S[ignore] Arcangelo » dont la Toccata est contenue dans un manuscrit conservé à Pérouse, qui porte sur la page de titre le nom de son propriétaire, Gioseppe Doni, personnage qui fut certainement en lien étroit avec le compositeur napolitain Andrea Falconieri, compositeur le plus représenté dans le recueil.

Chanteur, virtuose de la harpe et compositeur, Marco Marazzoli vécut à Rome sous la protection de la famille Barberini. Outre ses œuvres théâ3 Il s’agit de la chanson « Une jeune fillette ». (Ndt)

trales et ses oratorios, il fut l’auteur d’une imposante production de cantates pour une voix, dont No ch’io non piangerò constitue un bel exemple.

Girolamo Kapsberger, « Il Tedesco della tiorba » (l’Allemand du théorbe), né d’un père autrichien et d’une mère vénitienne, vénitien de naissance et de formation, romain d’adoption, est l’une des figures les plus remarquables de la vie musicale romaine du premier XVIIe siècle, au même titre que Frescobaldi. Pietro Della Valle le cite au nombre de ceux qui prouvent la supériorité de la musique moderne sur la musique ancienne.

Il a également produit de la musique vocale et des oratorios, parmi lesquels I pastori de Betlemme, où l’on trouve une allusion à la sordellina, sorte de cornemuse baroque très proche de la musette française. Il est représentatif de ce stylus phantasticus qui se diffusait dans l’Europe du Nord et dont un autre allemand romanisé, le Jésuite Athanasius Kircher, indique qu’il était également largement pratiqué en Italie. Il s’agissait d’un style basé sur l’improvisation, la surprise, l’habileté technique, la liberté formelle, équivalent musical du concept de « meraviglia » (émerveillement, étonnement) auquel aspiraient les poètes et les peintres de l’époque. Ce stylus devait connaître une longue vie : Johann Mattheson en parle encore en 1739, et ce n’est pas un hasard si à côté du nom de Frescobaldi il donne celui de Bernardo Pasquini, Toscan qui passa sa vie à Rome, maître de l’improvisation, représenté par une pièce sur ce CD. On doit à Athanasius Kircher les premières transcription (dans le Magnes, dans la Phonurgia

15 Menu Nova et dans la Musurgia) de ces arie turchesche (airs à la turque) que ses confrères d’Italie du Sud lui envoyaient au Collegio Romano, et qui étaient destinés servir d’antidote — du moins le croyaiton alors — à ceux qui avaient été piqués par la tarentule. En pratique, ce sont les premiers exemples de tarentelles, que Kircher décrit comme un moyen de soigner par la musique. À côté de l’image représentant une araignée, le Magnes indique ainsi « Musica sola mei superest medicina Veneni », « Seule la musique est un remède qui surpasse mon venin » : On croyait à l’époque que l’excitation frénétique à la danse et la dilatation des pores qui en résultait faisaient s’évaporer le venin du corps. Le rythme était fondamental, ainsi que la présence d’instruments à percussion. Kircher évoque divers instruments (tambour, instruments à cordes pincées et frottées, flûte, trompette, cornemuse), ajoutant qu’ « ils varient en fonction du venin ».

Danse née comme rituel païen, héritage d’anciens cultes dionysiaques répandu tout autour de la Méditerranée, elle avait toujours eu un but thérapeutique : se libérer, par l’ivresse, d’une oppression intérieure et pouvoir se réinsérer dans la société. Et c’est ce qu’elle est restée. L’araignée n’est qu’une métaphore, un symbole.

DIMINUIRE PER AUMENTARE Cosa spinge un musicista ad aggiungere variazioni ad un brano? Tutti i frontespizi, gli avvisi al lettore posti in calce alle opere per tiorba, chitarra e liuto, oltre a dare indicazioni tecniche su come eseguire arpeggi, trilli, legati… invitano l’esecutore ad aggiungere diminuzioni e abbellimenti. Quale sia il limite, la misura, il buon gusto che consente di restare verosimili, senza stravolgere lo spirito del brano, è cosa delicata e sottile. Sul Bello e i suoi canoni, l’uomo s’interroga dal Seicento a oggi, e nelle varie epoche ha cercato di stilare delle leggi universali in accordo con i mutamenti sociali e le correnti artistiche.

Le infinite pieghe che può assumere una linea, le sue trasformazioni, sono un aspetto fondante su cui poggia l’estetica barocca. “Il non ripetere due volte la stessa cosa” è un memento che abbraccia ogni arte nel Seicento. La Natura non è mai uguale a se stessa ed è in continua trasformazione, e l’uomo con la sua fragilità e limitatezza è consapevole del suo non essere più al centro dell’universo. Questo drammatico cambio di prospettive chiede all’atto creativo di inserirsi in un flusso molto più grande, in eterno quanto effimero movimento. “Tutto scorre” insegnavano i maestri greci, e questo fluire, questo trasformarsi e ripiegare su se stessi e fuori di sé, è ciò che in musica si traduce con le infinite possibilità in cui una melodia può essere riscritta e abbellita. Ogni danza dell’epoca, diviene una tela su cui dipingere ogni volta con colori diversi, variando lo stesso materiale con sfumature infinite.

Ricerca dei suoni e approccio esecutivo La rielaborazione delle danze per chitarra giunteci in alfabeto, cioè nella versione con gli accordi e il ritmo scritti, è l’oggetto di questo album. Immaginare queste brevi composizioni come canovacci su cui improvvisare, è stato come accettare una scommessa con il tempo: entrare in un linguaggio antico di secoli, senza preconcetti, cercando di utilizzare tutte le sfumature ritmiche, armoniche e melodiche della letteratura barocca. Ancora oggi molte stravaganze presenti nelle opere per chitarra, tiorba, liuto, sono viste con un occhio romanticamente borghese, che tende ad addolcirne e ammorbidirne la realizzazione, o addirittura a correggerne l’esecuzione. La musica romana di questo periodo è piena di armonie dissonanti, di glissandi sulla corda, di effetti e ritmi bizzarri modernissimi (vedi track n°1).

Abbiamo quindi cercato di miscelare i suoni dei pizzichi e delle percussioni, assecondando il carattere di ogni brano, sia esso popolare o colto. E tutto ciò secondo i suggerimenti delle fonti iconografiche, musicali, storiche e soprattutto senza la paura di osare.

LA DESTREZZA E LO STYLUS PHANTASTICUS Il Seicento musicale è percorso da una costellazione di melodie, bassi ostinati, schemi armonici.

D’origine popolare, con poche eccezioni. Queste melodie, che si udivano nelle strade dalle voci dei cantimbanchi, venivano elaborate dai compositori, che le sottoponevano a variazioni, passaggi, diminuzioni, tanto che finirono per costituire la base di una vastissima parte del repertorio strumentale secentesco.

La loro popolarità ebbe un prevedibile riflesso in letteratura. Un opuscolo di Giulio Cesare Croce descrive un amante affamato (ma munito di chitarrino, come si vede nell’illustrazione riprodotta a p. 12) corteggiare una cuoca per avere del cibo; la cuoca vuole da lui in cambio delle canzoni.

Vediamo quindi nel corso del dialogo citare la Girometta, La bella Franceschina, il Ruggiero e, nel frontespizio anche la Monica, col titolo alternativo di rado usato “E tanto tempo hormai”. Un sonetto del poeta burlesco bolognese Bartolomeo Bocchini, detto Zan Muzzinà, contenuto nella raccolta La piva dissonante (1644) descrive una donna che cerca, danzando e cantando, di distrarre un uomo allo scopo di sottrargli soldi dalla tasca: nel sonetto vengono citati Bergamasca, Spagnoletta, Pavaniglia, Gagliarda, Tordiglione, Pass’e mezzo, Ruggiero, Corrente, Moresca e – unico brano di matrice non popolare – il Ballo del Granduca.

Questi balli e melodie non si diffondevano solo nelle strade. Le compagnie teatrali le eseguivano anche nelle corti. Per esempio, il capocomico e drammaturgo Giovan Battista Andreini (che

arrivò a esibirsi alla corte di Francia) dedicò una intera scena della sua commedia Lo Schiavetto (1612) a queste danze. Il protagonista, assieme ai personaggi Rondone e Succiola vi si esibiscono cantando e danzando una Calata, un Villan di Spagna, una Bergamasca, e la Sfessania che Callot immortalò nelle sue celebri incisioni (vedi p. 16). La moglie stessa di Andreini, Virginia, era una esperta chitarrista e partecipava alle rappresentazioni anche in questa veste.

— Nella prima metà del Seicento, chitarra e tiorba diventano rapidamente gli strumenti a corda pizzicata più diffusi, tanto che nel 1628 Vincenzo Giustiniani, nel suo Discorso sopra la musica de’ suoi tempi, notava che “la Chitarra alla spagnola per tutta Italia, massime in Napoli, che unita con la Tiorba, pare che abbiano congiurato di sbandire affatto il Liuto”.

In effetti, vediamo moltiplicarsi in quei decenni le raccolte di musica per questi strumenti. Quasi tutte hanno l’intento di offrire al dilettante un metodo per imparare a suonare da soli, propongono spessissimo le medesime melodie che con tutta evidenza erano molto diffuse. Vengono stampate col sistema semplificato di scrittura dell’Intavolatura e, per quanto riguarda la chitarra, dell’Alfabeto, dove a una lettera dell’alfabeto corrispondeva un determinato accordo. Ben presto le finalità espressive indussero i compositori a introdurre accanto alle lettere dell’alfabeto segni che indicavano note estranee all’accordo: era nato quell’Al-

19 Italiano fabeto che Foscarini chiamò dissonante e pochi anni dopo Carlo Calvi Alfabeto falso (così, non a caso, s’intitolava il CD d’esordio de “I Bassifondi” che con felice esito affrontava questo repertorio).

L’Alfabeto finì per indicare l’accompagnamento di testi popolari e dialettali, ma anche aulici o spirituali – arie, canzonette, persino laudi da cantarsi negli oratori. Rimaneva comunque uno schema, una traccia spesso utile solo a coloro che già conoscessero la melodia nominata all’inizio del brano. Ciò che faceva la differenza era affidato all’improvvisazione dell’interprete, secondo i codici definiti di una prassi che le odierne esecuzioni si sforzano di ricostruire. Ed è appunto il caso del presente CD, che guarda con particolare attenzione all’ambiente secentesco romano.

Tiorba e chitarra furono molto presenti nella Roma in quegli anni, come si vede dal numero di edizioni prodotte da stampatori attivi nella città (Verovio, Robletti) e dalla vasta produzione musiche per tiorba o chitarra sole. Ma anche di arie, canzonette e villanelle che prevedevano questi strumenti nell’accompagnamento. I cantanti, soprattutto donne, accompagnavano sé stessi: rimandiamo, a riguardo, al delizioso disegno che raffigura una cantante con chitarra, del pittore romano Ottavio Leoni, oggi al British Museum. Oppure, sullo stesso soggetto, al dipinto conservato al Metropolitan Museum, eseguito dal francese Simon Vouet durante il suo lungo soggiorno romano.

La popolarità della chitarra spagnola iniziò a Napoli, ma ben presto si diffuse in tutta Italia. A Roma ebbe caratteristiche peculiari: lo spagnolo

Juan de Arañes vi pubblicò nel 1624 una raccolta di musiche a una o più voci accompagnate dalla chitarra a la usanza romana, usanza che consisteva probabilmente in un particolare tipo di accordatura.

— La Girometta fu una delle melodie più popolari che percorsero la musica dal tardo Rinascimento ai primi anni del Settecento. Già dal 1559 la vediamo utilizzata dal bolognese Filippo Azzaiolo nel suo Secondo libro di villotte del fiore. Il successo di questa melodia oltrepassò i confini d’Italia: nella prima metà del Seicento, il poeta inglese Patrick Carey prescrisse che una sua ballata (O permit that my sadness) si dovesse cantare “To the Italian tune, called Girometta”. Il Capriccio sulla Girometta di Frescobaldi, nei Fiori musicali, è l’esito più conosciuto tra le composizioni elaborate su questa melodia. Molto meno nota e diffusa è la melodia Aurilla mia. La versione di Kapsberger è senza dubbio la più conosciuta, ma la si ritrova anche in altre raccolte: Giovanni Stefani (1622), Pietro Millioni (1627), Matteo Coferati (1689), talvolta con un testo alternativo (Tirinto mio, tu mi feristi).

Nulla si sa di Tommaso Marchetti, che si definisce “romano” in una raccolta stampata a Roma nel 1660, considerata la replica quasi esatta di una raccolta di Pietro Millioni degli anni Venti del secolo. Mal francese mi tormenta allude alla malattia così chiamata dagli italiani, dai francesi “male napoletano” e dal medico veronese Girolamo Fracastoro “sifilide”. Notizia circa una canzone su questo argomento (sulla stessa melodia? difficile dirlo, ma possibile) è rintracciabile dal 1585. In

20 quell’anno Tommaso Garzoni, ne La piazza universale di tutte le professioni del mondo parla di spettatori che ascoltano un cantimbanco “cantar un sonetto del mal Francese, et una Siciliana appresso”. L’aria della Monica, qui eseguita nella versione di Marchetti, è stata invece una melodia utilizzata da moltissimi musicisti, a cominciare da Frescobaldi che vi costruì sopra una Messa.

Tutto fa pensare che ebbe origine in Germania.

Già nel 1574 appare nel Teutsch Lautenbuch del liutista Melchior Neusidler, e quattro anni dopo la vediamo in una raccolta francese con un testo che parla di una giovane che non vuol farsi monaca. Per molti anni i compositori italiani chiamarono questa melodia Ballo tedesco (a partire da Gorzanis, 1579) o Alemanna, anche dopo che il chitarrista Girolamo Montesardo la intitolò per primo La Monica nella sua raccolta del 1606.

Scarse sono le notizie su Francesco Valdambrini, romano anche lui, che nel 1646 e 1647 pubblicò due raccolte di musiche per chitarra, dove rese omaggio al magistero di Kapsberger e sottolineò l’importanza dell’improvvisazione virtuosistica: il suonare bene “consiste più in destrezza che in rigore, perché volendovi andare con rigore di musica ò si darà in asprezze, overo in seccaggini” affermando che “la vaghezza e perfetione consisteno nelle variationi de’ stili”.

Arcangelo Lori, detto anche Arcangelo del Leuto (ma anche organista a S. Luigi dei Francesi) fu anch’egli autore romano di nascita e formazione; è da identificarsi con lui il “S(ignor) Arcangelo” la cui Toccata è contenuta in un manoscritto conservato a Perugia che reca sul frontespizio il nome

del suo possessore, Gioseppe Doni, personaggio che certamente fu in stretti rapporti col compositore napoletano Andrea Falconieri, il nome più ricorrente nella raccolta.

Cantante, virtuoso d’arpa e compositore, Marco Marazzoli visse a Roma sotto la protezione della famiglia Barberini. Fu autore, oltre che di opere teatrali e oratori, di un’imponente produzione di cantate a voce sola, delle quali un rilevante esempio è No ch’io non piangerò.

Girolamo Kapsberger, “Il Tedesco della tiorba” (nato da padre austriaco e madre veneziana, veneziano per nascita e formazione, romano d’adozione) è figura che grandeggia nella Roma musicale del primo Seicento, accanto a Frescobaldi: Pietro Della Valle lo cita tra gli esempi che dimostrano la superiorità della musica moderna sull’antica. Produsse anche musica vocale e oratori, tra cui I pastori di Bettelemme, dove troviamo una allusione alla sordellina, sorta di zampogna barocca molto affine alla musette francese. È musicista rappresentativo di quello stylus phantasticus che era diffuso nell’Europa settentrionale, e che è ben descritto da un altro tedesco romanizzato, il gesuita Athanasius Kircher, come praticato ampiamente anche in Italia. Uno stile basato sull’improvvisazione, la sorpresa, la destrezza tecnica, le forme libere: equivalente musicale del concetto di “meraviglia” cui aspiravano poeti e pittori dell’epoca. Tale stylus fu destinato ad avere lunga vita: ne parlerà ancora Johann Mattheson nel 1739, che non a caso in proposito accosta al nome di Frescobaldi quello di Bernardo Pasquini, toscano che trascorse a Roma la sua

21 Menu vita, maestro d’improvvisazione, che figura con un brano nel presente CD. A Athanasius Kircher dobbiamo le prime trascrizioni (nel Magnes, nella Phonurgia Nova e nella Musurgia) di quelle arie turchesche che i suoi confratelli dal sud d’Italia gli inviavano al Collegio Romano, e che avevano lo scopo di fornire un antidoto a coloro che erano stati morsi dalla tarantola – almeno così allora si credeva. In pratica, sono i primi esempi di tarantelle, che Kircher descrive come mezzo per curare attraverso la musica. Accanto all’immagine del ragno, nel Magnes, porrà infatti il motto Musica sola mei Superest medicina Veneni, la sola musica resta medicina al mio veleno: l’eccitazione alla danza frenetica, la conseguente dilatazione dei pori, secondo l’opinione del tempo l’avrebbero fatto evaporare dal corpo. Fondamentale era il ritmo, la presenza di strumenti percussivi. Kircher elenca diversi strumenti (tamburo, strumenti a corde pizzicate e ad arco, flauto dritto, tromba, zampogna), aggiungendo che “variano a seconda del veleno”.

Danza nata come rituale pagano, retaggio di antichi culti dionisiaci e diffusa in tutto il Mediterraneo, ebbe da sempre fini terapeutici: liberarsi, attraverso l’ebbrezza, da una oppressione interiore e potersi reinserire in un contesto sociale. E tale rimase. Il ragno non è che una metafora, un simbolo.
