UNWRITTEN The history of the harp is made up of moments of light and shade, with only a few solo pieces for harp having been passed down to us from the Baroque time.

The instruments, silent and still for centuries, merely ornaments in European museums, tell of a repertoire that certainly existed. This is also confirmed by the fascinating narratives of the lives of highly esteemed and sought-after players in the courts.

It’s amongst them that I imagined myself: what music did they draw from these strings? why not recreate it, giving life to the unwritten?

— “As for the pieces that are played on the harp, they are not different from those played on the lute or the spinet” Marin Mersenne, Harmonie Universelle, Paris 1637

This statement of the great French theoretician Marin Mersenne encourages us to look for our lost repertoire among pages which by name do not belong to the harp.

We are dealing with a time in which music passed easily from one instrument to another and it is understandable that the harp borrowed its repertoire from those instruments with organological and symbolic characteristics most similar to its own.

The connection between the harp, the lute and the spinet evoked by Mersenne is clear given the polyphonic nature of these three instruments. Less evident and intuitive is the analogy between harp and violin.

The affinity between the harp and the violin stated in the title of this rare publication of 1667 is striking, and brings to

mind the words of Agostino Agazzari, who in his treatise Del sonare sopra ’l basso of 1607 lists the harp not only among the instruments di fondamento, or providing the foundation, such as harpsichord and organ, but also among the ornamentation instruments, di ornamento, like the violin.

Between the beginning of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th there are in fact several pieces with an obbligato part di ornamento written for the harp, which interacts with voices or instruments.

The many authors include Stefano Landi (1587-1639), Luigi Rossi (1597-1653), Agostino Guerrieri (c.1630c.1684), Alessandro Stradella (c.1639-1682), Alessandro Scarlatti (1660- 1725), Giacomo Perti (1661-1756), William Lawes (1602-1645), Georg F. Händel (1685-1759), Georg Ph. Telemann (1681-1767), Michael Götz (sd), Georg Gebel (1709- 1753), Johann M. Molter (1696-1765), Johann W. Hertel (1727-1789).* In the 17th century pieces the concertante harp is often written in two parts, bass and soprano, where the upper line is very similar to that of the violin in ensemble settings.

In the pieces from later on, the harp is more in dialogue with the violin, in its way of using similar speech idioms and register for the melody, in the singability of its phrases, in the musical gestures and in the intertwining of the two parts.

In some cases, rare but significant, the harp in fact doubles the violin in unison. * The quantity of ensemble pieces that include the harp is remarkable when compared to the number written for the solo instrument. In fact we have only four pieces inherited from the great Neapolitan School of the beginning of the 17th century dedicated to the solo harp (by Ascanio Mayone and Giovanni Maria Trabaci). As for the later period there are examples in the Spanish and Welsh repertoire and rare cases in the German one.

The two instruments therefore seem to have shared common paths along the way.

Hence the intuition: to recreate the long lost past of the harp, drawing from the idioms of the violin, its traveling companion in the passage of time.

I therefore chose and adapted some of the most fascinating and emblematic pieces of repertoire for the violin: the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, Biber, Marini and Corelli.

The idea turned out to be a happy revelation: while a lot of keyboard music was not very idiomatic for the harp and often needed to be reduced and simplified, the pieces for the violin proved to work much better and could even be further expanded and elaborated. © Flora Papadopoulos I took as examplesCopyright the numerous historical transcriptions of the works of Bach and Corelli, to understand the methods used to adapt a piece from one instrument to another.

Other important sources were the few pieces specifically written for the harp and in particular the Musikalische Rüstkammer [Musical Armoury] collection, which gives us a precious example of the idiom of the early eighteenth century harp in Germany.

The process of transcribing proved to be full of experimentation, hypotheses, reconsiderations and choices, finally arriving at the result that I present here. This is just one of the possible recreations of this music that

modern media has allowed us to capture, that in the past might have existed without ever being fixed on paper.

These are the words of Father Bonanni referring to the harp in 1722. It is indeed a well-documented phenomenon that the Italian harp tradition, particularly flourishing during the early 17th century, at a certain point migrated across the Alps.

There were several Italian harpists who worked in the German courts, and, in all likelihood, they were responsible for the spread of Italian multiple strung harps: in the first half of the 17th century Aloisio Ferrari was active in Salzburg and Paolo Da Ponte in Vienna, while Giovanni Battista Macchioni was in the service of Princess Adelaide of Bavaria (1636-1676), whom he apparently taught to play the harp.

Some of the courts and religious institutions that employed harpists during the 17th and 18th centuries were in Munich, Stuttgart, Augsburg, Jülich, Köthen, Schwerin, Weißenfels, Heidelberg, Stendal, Vienna, Wroclaw, Königsberg, Braunschweig, Dresden, Ansbach, Würzburg, Hannover, Wolfenbüttel, Gotha, Kassel and Berlin.

The harp was widespread not only in the court chapels and among the nobility, but also in the streets, in the markets and among the students. The publication of Musikalische Rüstkammer, a collection of harp pieces published in Leipzig in 1719, was connected to the recreational activities of these student groups.

Sebastian Knüpfer (1633-1676), Johann Schelle (16481701), Johann Krieger (1652-1735), Friedrich W. Zachow (1663-1717) are just some of the names of composers who wrote sacred cantatas with obbligato parts for harp at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

6 There was no single model of harp in circulation. It can be assumed that every harpist used the instrument that was more widespread in his area, or better suited to his social rank, to the music to be performed, or simply to the purchasing power of his own pockets. However, the large harps with three rows of strings from Italy remained in use for a long time, with the last surviving example, owned by the Museum of Musical Instruments in Leipzig, dating back to 1793, well beyond the invention of the pedal harp.

“THE ART OF OMISSION” AND ADDITION Opening with the ‘’Annunciation’’ Sonata by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber has a symbolic and idiomatic value: the harp is often associated, in iconography and literature, with the transfiguration of affects, and this is precisely what Biber is expressing in this composition: the descent of the angel from the heavens (Praeludium) and the fateful announcement (Aria) produce a splendid yet terrible turbulence, changing the destiny of humanity forever.

The Sonata is a reflection of all that the violin’s language could express in the seventeenth century: rich in onomatopoeia, infused with mysticism, seasoned with a new virtuosity, which explored the possibilities of the instrument with freshness, curiosity and enthusiasm.

— This pioneering attitude also characterizes the music of composer Biagio Marini from Brescia. The Romanesca per violino solo e basso se piace [for solo violin and bass if you like] is one of the very first pieces of the violin’s literature that is inspired by the Romanesca formula, widely used in a vocal setting. Marini marvelously reinterprets the elastic sprezzatura in the rhythm and the pronunciation, creating a new way to conceive instrumental music.

The voice becomes a violin, the violin becomes a harp.

A harp that Marini had perhaps already known in his homeland and which he had certainly encountered across the Alps. This is testified in his Opera VIII, published in 1629 when he was choirmaster at the Bavarian court of Neuburg an der Donau. The presence of harpists in Bavaria was growing in those years and the proof of this is in the inclusion of the harp in a sonata and some galliards and ballets contained in this collection.

A few pages later, in the same publication, we find one of the most experimental sonatas of Marini (in the subtitle he in fact mentions Capricious sonatas [...] with other modern inventions): the Sonata Quarta per il violino per sonar con due corde [for the violin to play with two strings]. The idiomatic novelty of the violin double stops cannot be recreated with the same amazement on the harp, which as a result has ventured into other new experiments that best express its own idiom. An example is the central section, which I have chosen to arrange with florid arpeggios, and the passage of contrary motion scales that introduces the final section which I reworked to give, even with the harp, the idea of surprise and wonder that this sonata aims to arouse. Tender expressiveness and fantasy unfold through the contrasting sections of this daring composition in stil moderno, which alternates moments of poignant lyricism with shots of outrage and anger, like chiaroscuro in a painting by Caravaggio.

— Instead, it is the great Roman architecture of Bernini that comes to mind when one hears the compositions of Arcangelo Corelli, “the Orfeo of Italy for the violin”, as described by the German composer Muffat. Corelli’s balance of form makes him exemplary. His style is austere, noble, incisive, but also expressive and passionate. This made him extremely renowned and famous, with his works resonating across Europe, from Germany to England, where the cult of

7 English Menu Corelli survived for a long time, beyond the Italian oblivion.

There exist many examples of emulation, transcriptions and readjustments of his works. The choice of transcribing the Tenth Sonata from his Opus V was born from the existence of the seven variations for harp on the Gavotte, which I myself included, of the great harpist and Welsh composer John Parry (1710-1782). Parry’s fondness for this theme is due to the charm that Corelli’s music had in England, but it is interesting to note how, even in this case, a piece for the violin was chosen to be played by the harp.

It is therefore a sonata with an international vision, and distinctly English, which I present here, adorned with fluid cadences in Corellian style and embellishments of Geminiani which were fashionable across the channel.

— Less widely spread, as we know, was the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach at the time. The six Solo a violino senza basso accompagnato of 1720 (better known as the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin), were not published while their author was alive, and are therefore preserved in their manuscript form.

I have transcribed the First Sonata for the harp. Here the writing for the violin is dense, complex, technically demanding and polyphonic. I wanted to reflect these aspects on the harp. It was a functional choice to transpose it down a fourth, to D minor, to make the most of all the registers of my instrument.

For the transcription of the Fugue I referred to three versions: not only that for the violin (BWV 1001), but also that for the lute (BVW 1000), probably made by his pupil and lutenist Johann Christian Weyrauch, and that for the organ (BWV 539), preserved in a posthumous and non-autographed source. In particular the latter version brings many additions and changes compared to the original for the violin. From these I have drawn inspira-

tion to develop a system of transcription that was used for the other movements of the sonata.

In the Fugue for the organ, the addition of voices is almost always done in the bass. This creates a very different harmonization to that of the version for the solo violin.

I have chosen to keep the form of the three-part fugue, and not to adopt the five-part form of the organ, but in moments of greater pathos I have added a voice, as Bach does in the versions for the violin and the lute.

I have adopted a rigorous counterpoint and a constant harmonic flow in the Adagio and in the Fugue, while allowing myself to be more allusive and harmonically vague in the Siciliana and in the Presto.

If indeed Johann Philipp Kirnberger, a pupil of Bach, describes that of his Master as “the art of omission”, “[...] it is impossible to add another voice without making a mistake, and apart from that, the addition would be clumsy and not singable.”

Johann Friedrich Agricola, another of his students, offers a glance in the opposite direction: “Their author (Bach) often played them (the six Sonatas and Partitas) himself on the clavichord, adding harmonies where necessary. Here too, he felt the need for a harmonic resonance that he could not completely achieve in the original composition. “ Idem

Let us depart with this beautiful image! The great genius, seated at that intimate and delicate instrument, rehears himself in the domestic freedom of an always new and inspired improvisation.

And so he spends his time, in the delight of music.

UNWRITTEN L’histoire de la harpe est constellée d’ombres et de lumières ; nous n’avons aujourd’hui que bien peu de morceaux pour harpe seule datant de la période baroque.

Les instruments, désormais immobiles et sans voix, qui ne sont plus que des ornements dans les musées européens, narrent pourtant l’histoire d’un répertoire qui a bel et bien existé.

Les récits fascinants qui racontent les vies des harpistes virtuoses, alors très estimés et recherchés par les cours, nous le confirment. C’est vers eux que je me suis donc tournée ; quelles musiques ont fait résonner leurs cordes?

Pourquoi ne pas les recréer en donnant vie à ce qui ne fut peut-être jamais écrit?

— « Quant aux pièces qui se jouent sur la harpe, elles ne sont point différentes de celles qui se jouent sur le luth et sur l’épinette. » Marin Mersenne, Harmonie Universelle, Paris 1637

Cette déclaration du grand théoricien français Marin Mersenne nous pousse à rechercher ce répertoire perdu dans des pages qui ne nous appartiennent pas.

Il s’agit d’une époque au cours de laquelle la musique passe avec désinvolture d’un instrument à l’autre et il apparaît évident que la harpe emprunte son répertoire aux instruments mieux adaptés à ses propres caractéristiques organologiques et symboliques.

Le lien entre la harpe, le luth et l’épinette évoqué par Mersenne apparaît clairement, étant donné la nature polyphonique de ces trois instruments. L’analogie entre la harpe et le violon s’avère quant à elle moins explorée et moins intuitive.

L’affinité entre la harpe et le violon déclarée dans le titre de cette publication rare de 1667 nous frappe immédiatement, et rappelle le témoignage d’Agostino Agazzari, qui dans son traité Del sonare sopra ’l basso de 1607, considérait la harpe, non seulement comme un instrument de fondement (di fondamento) tel le clavecin ou l’orgue, mais également comme un instrument d’ornement (di ornamento), en faisant ainsi l’équivalent du violon.

Au début du dix-septième siècle et durant la première moitié du dix-huitième, il existe d’ailleurs divers morceaux musicaux dotés d’une partie d’ornamento composée pour la harpe en concert avec voix ou autres instruments. Nombreux sont les auteurs, dont Stefano Landi (1587-1639), Luigi Rossi (1597-1653), Agostino Guerrieri (c.1630-c.1684), Alessandro Stradella (c.16391682), Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), Giacomo Perti (1661-1756), William Lawes (1602-1645), Georg F. Händel (1685-1759), Georg Ph. Telemann (1681-1767), Michael Götz (s.d.), Georg Gebel (1709-1753), Johann M. Molter (1696-1765), Johann W. Hertel (1727-1789).* Dans les morceaux du dix-septième siècle, la harpe concertante a souvent une écriture en deux parties, * La quantité de ces œuvres qui incluent la harpe est frappante quand on la compare au petit nombre de pièces composées pour la harpe seule. Nous ne disposons en effet que de quatre morceaux du dixseptième siècle, qui sont le fruit de la grande école napolitaine du début du siècle, dédiés à la harpe solo (d’Ascanio Mayone et Giovanni Maria Trabaci). En ce qui concerne la période ultérieure, nous pouvons trouver des exemples dans les répertoires espagnols et gallois ainsi que de rares pièces allemandes.

10 basse, et soprano, dans laquelle la ligne supérieure est semblable aux parties jouées au violon dans le concert d’instruments. Dans les morceaux plus tardifs, la harpe semble plutôt dialoguer avec le violon dans sa façon d’utiliser un langage et un registre similaires pour la mélodie et dans les gestes musicaux.

Dans certains cas, rares mais significatifs, la harpe double carrément le violon, à l’unisson.

Les deux instruments semblent donc avoir eu un parcours en partie commun.

De là l’intuition : recréer pour la harpe ce passé désormais perdu en puisant dans le langage du violon, son compagnon de voyage au fil du temps.

J’ai donc choisi et adapté certains des morceaux les plus fascinants et emblématiques du répertoire du violon, à savoir les compositions de Johann Sebastian Bach, Biber, Marini et Corelli.

L’idée s’est révélée fort heureuse : bien que de nombreux morceaux pour clavier n’étaient que peu idiomatiques pour la harpe et nécessitaient souvent d’être réduits et simplifiés, les morceaux pour violon fonctionnaient mieux et pouvaient même être élaborés et élargis.

J’ai pris pour exemple les nombreuses transcriptions Copyright © Flora Papadopoulos de l’époque des œuvres de Bach et de Corelli, pour comprendre les méthodes alors utilisées dans l’adaptation d’un morceau d’un instrument à l’autre. Les autres morceaux, peu nombreux, composés spécifiquement

pour la harpe, et en particulier la collection Musikalische Rüstkammer (Attirail Musical) qui constitue un précieux exemple de l’idiome de la harpe du début du dix-huitième siècle allemand, constituent une autre source importante.

Le travail de transcription s’est révélé riche d’expériences, d’hypothèses, de remaniements et de choix, pour aboutir au résultat que je présente ici, qui n’est qu’une des multiples phases de transformation de musiques que les supports modernes ont su entretenir, et qui jadis existait peut-être sans n’avoir jamais été couchées sur le papier.

C’est ce que décrit Padre Bonanni en se référant à la harpe en 1722. Et c’est d’ailleurs un phénomène bien documenté que la tradition italienne de la harpe, particulièrement florissante au début du dix-septième siècle, ait à un certain moment migré au-delà des Alpes.

Divers harpistes italiens ont travaillé dans les cours germaniques et, selon toute probabilité, ils furent responsables de la diffusion des harpes à plusieurs registres de cordes : pendant la première moitié du dixseptième siècle, Aloisio Ferrari fut en effet actif à Salsbourg, tandis que Paolo Da Ponte jouait à Vienne et que Giovanni Battista Macchioni était au service de la princesse Adélaïde de Bavière (1636-1676), à laquelle il enseignait à jouer de cet instrument.

Monaco, Stuttgard, Augusta, Juliers, Köthen, Schwerin, Weißenfels, Heidelberg, Stendal, Vienne, Wrocław, Königsberg, Brunswick, Dresdes, Ansbach, Wurtzbourg, Hannovre, Wolfenbüttel, Gotha, Cassel et Berlin furent parmi les cours et les institutions religieuses qui em-

11 Français ployèrent des harpistes au cours des dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles.

La harpe était diffusée non seulement dans les chapelles des cours et au sein de la noblesse, mais également dans les rues, les marchés et parmi les étudiants.

La publication de Musikalische Rüstkammer, une collection de morceaux pour harpe publiée à Leipzig en 1719, est à reliée aux activités récréatives de ces groupes d’étudiants. Sebastian Knüpfer (1633-1676), Johann Schelle (1648-1701), Johann Krieger (1652-1735) et Friedrich W. Zachow (1663-1717) sont quelques uns des noms de compositeurs qui sont à l’origine de cantates sacrées contenant des parties de harpe, à cheval entre le dix-septième et le dix-huitième siècle.

Il n’existait alors aucun modèle unique de harpe. On peut supposer que chaque harpiste utilisait l’instrument qui était le plus commun dans la région où il jouait, ou bien qui correspondait le mieux à son rang social, à la musique à jouer ou simplement au pouvoir d’achat que sa bourse lui permettait. Quoi qu’il en soit, les grandes harpes à trois rangs de dérivation italiennes ont longtemps été utilisées: le dernier exemplaire existant, qui se trouve au Musée des instruments de musique de Leipzig, remonte à 1793, donc bien après l’invention de la harpe à pédales.

« L’ART DE L’OMISSION » ET DE L’AJOUT Ouvrir le disque de la Sonate « L’Annonciation » de Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber a une valeur symbolique et idiomatique car la harpe est souvent associée, dans l’iconographie et la littérature, à la transfiguration de l’affect et des émotions, et c’est précisément cela que Biber cherche à exprimer dans sa composition : la descente de l’ange (Praeludium) et l’annonce fatidique (Aria), produisent un tourment splendide et terrible à

la fois, qui transforment à tout jamais les âmes et le destin de l’humanité.

La sonate représente la somme ce que pouvait être le langage du violon au dix-septième siècle, riche d’onomatopées, imprégné de mysticisme, doté d’une virtuosité nouvelle, qui explore les possibilités de l’instrument avec fraîcheur, curiosité et enthousiasme.

— Cette attitude pionnière caractérise également le compositeur italien de Brescia, Biagio Marini. La note Romanesca per violino solo e basso se piace [pour violon seul et basse si on veut], constitue l’une des toutes premières pièces de la littérature de l’instrument qui s’inspire de l’Air de Romanesca, une formule harmonique largement employée pour la musique vocale.

C’est de là que le rythme et la prononciation, s’étendent de manière élastique, avec sprezzatura, réinterprétés à merveille par Marini en créant une nouvelle façon d’entendre la musique instrumentale. La voix se fait violon, le violon devient harpe.

Une harpe que Marini avait peut-être déjà connue chez lui et qu’il avait sans doute rencontrée au-delà des Alpes. Il nous en laisse le témoignage dans son Opera VIII, publiée en 1629, alors qu’il était maître de chapelle auprès de la cour de Bavière à Neubourg-sur-le-Danube.

La présence des harpistes en Bavière s’est renforcée de plus en plus ces années-là. L’inclusion de la harpe dans une sonate et quelques autres musiques de galliards et ballets contenus dans la collection en atteste bien.

C’est quelques pages après, dans la même publication, qu’apparait une des sonates les plus expérimentales de Marini (d’ailleurs, dans le sous-titre il fait mention de Sonates capricieuses […] avec autres modernes inventions) : Sonata Quarta per il violino per sonar con due corde (à jouer à deux cordes). La nouveauté idiomatique

12 du jeu en double corde au violon ne peut être rendue avec autant de stupeur à la harpe, laquelle s’aventure donc dans d’autres expérimentations mieux susceptibles d’exprimer son propre langage. La section centrale en constitue un exemple: je l’ai arrangée avec des arpèges florissants. Similairement, j’ai réélaboré le passage de gammes à mouvement inverse qui introduit la conclusion, pour rendre, même avec la harpe, l’idée de surprise et d’émerveillement que cette sonate cherche à susciter.

L’expressivité affectueuse et l’imagination se diffusent à travers les sections contrastantes de cette composition hardie en stil moderno, qui alterne les moments de lyrisme bouleversants, ponctués de dédain et de colère, tels les clairs-obscurs d’un tableau de Caravage — Ainsi, c’est aux grandes œuvres architecturales romaines de Bernini qu’on peut comparer les compositions d’Arcangelo Corelli, telles « Orfeo de l’Italie pour le violon », comme défini par le compositeur allemand Muffat.

Chez Corelli, l’équilibre de la forme impose sa propre exemplarité. Son style est austère, noble, incisif, mais également expressif et passionné. Tout cela faisait de lui un compositeur extrêmement apprécié et célèbre.

Ses œuvres ont eu une répercussion immense en Europe, de l’Allemagne au Royaume-Uni, où le culte de Corelli a survécu bien longtemps, bien après avoir été oublié en Italie. Les exemples d’émulation, les transcriptions et les réadaptations de ses œuvres ne manquent pas. Le choix de transcrire la Dixième Sonate de l’Œuvre V découle en effet de l’existence des sept variations pour harpe sur la gavotte, que j’ai insérées à mon tour, du grand harpiste et compositeur gallois John Parry (17101782). La prédilection de Parry pour ce thème est due à la fascination que les musiques de Corelli ont exercée en Angleterre, mais il n’en reste pas moins intéressant

de noter que, même dans ce cas, c’est un morceau pour violon qui a été choisi pour être joué à la harpe.

C’est donc une sonate à la vision internationale, et à la saveur anglaise très prononcée, que je présente ici, agrémentée de cadences fluides en style corellien et d’embellissements à la Geminiani, si populaires outre-manche.

— L’œuvre du grand Johann Sebastian Bach, on le sait, était à l’époque moins diffusée. Les Sei solo a violino senza basso accompagnato de 1720 (mieux connus sous le nom de Sonates et Partitas pour violon seul), ne furent pas publiés du vivant de leur auteur, et sont donc conservés sous leur forme manuscrite.

J’ai transcrit la Première Sonate pour la harpe. Ici, l’écriture pour violon se fait dense, complexe, exigeante du point de vue technique, et polyphonique. J’ai voulu faire passer ces aspects à la harpe. Le choix de la transposée à la quarte inférieure, en ré mineur, est fonctionnel et sert à valoriser au mieux tous les registres de mon instrument.

Pour ce qui est de la transcription de la Fugue, je me suis inspirée de trois versions qui sont arrivées jusqu’à nous : non seulement celle pour violon (BWV 1001) mais également celle pour luth (BWV 1000), probablement faite par le luthiste et son élève Johann Christian Weyrauch, ainsi que celle pour orgue (BWV 539), conservée dans une source posthume non autographe.

Comparée à l’originale pour violon, cette dernière version apporte notamment de nombreux ajouts et modifications. Je me suis inspirée de ces œuvres remaniées pour élaborer un système de transcription valide également pour les autres temps de la sonate.

Dans la Fugue pour orgue, l’ajout des voix se produit presque toujours à la basse, qui comporte une harmo-

13 Menu nisation bien plus diversifiée par rapport à celle qui ressort de la version pour violon seul.

J’ai choisi de maintenir la forme de la fugue à trois voix, et de ne pas adopter celle à cinq voix de l’orgue, mais en ajoutant toutefois une voix dans les moments plus emphatiques comme l’avait fait Bach dans les versions pour violon et luth. J’ai adopté un contrepoint rigoureux et une conduite harmonique constante dans l’adagio et la fugue, en restant toutefois plus allusive et vague du point de vue harmonique dans la Sicilienne et le Presto.

Si Johann Philipp Kirberger, élève de Bach, décrit celle de son Maître comme « l’art de l’omission », « [...] Il est impossible d’ajouter une autre voix sans commettre d’erreur, et de toute façon, la voix ajoutée ne serait que maladroite et peu mélodieux » H.J. Schulze, Dokumente zum Nachwirken J.S. Bachs 1750-1800, Leipzig 1972

Johann Friedrich Agricola, un autre de ses élèves, nous ouvre les yeux dans la direction opposée : « Leur auteur (Bach) les jouait souvent (ses six Sonates et Partitas) lui-même au clavicorde, en ajoutant les harmonies dans la mesure nécessaire.

Il sentait bien lui-même l’exigence d’une harmonie résonante qu’il ne pouvait pas obtenir complètement dans la composition originale. » Idem

Quittons-nous sur cette belle image ! Le grand génie, assis à cet instrument intime et délicat, se réécoute lui-même dans la liberté domestique d’une improvisation toujours nouvelle et inspirée, et passe ainsi son temps, dans le vague de la musique.

UNWRITTEN La storia dell’arpa è costellata di luci e ombre; pochi sono i brani per arpa sola del periodo barocco giunti fino a noi.

Gli strumenti, immobili e senza più voce, ormai puro ornamento di musei europei, raccontano però di un repertorio che è sicuramente esistito. Ce lo confermano anche le affascinanti narrazioni di vite di suonatori virtuosi, stimati e molto ricercati nelle corti.

In loro io mi sono dunque ritrovata: quali musiche dalle loro corde? Perché non ricrearle dando vita in suono a ciò che forse mai fu scritto?

— Quanto ai brani che si suonano all’arpa, essi non sono diversi da quelli che si suonano al liuto o alla spinetta.

Marin Mersenne, Harmonie Universelle, Parigi 1637

La dichiarazione del grande teorico francese Marin Mersenne ci sprona a ricercare questo repertorio perduto tra pagine che nominalmente non ci appartengono.

Trattiamo di un’epoca in cui la musica migra con disinvoltura da uno strumento all’altro ed è evidente che l’arpa mutuasse il proprio repertorio da quegli strumenti che meglio si adattavano alle proprie caratteristiche organologiche e simboliche.

Il nesso tra l’arpa, il liuto e la spinetta evocato da Mersenne appare chiaro, data la natura polifonica di questi tre strumenti. Meno esplorata ed intuitiva è l’analogia tra arpa e violino.

— Capricci puerili […] per suonarsi nel clavicembalo, arpa, violino et altri stromenti.

L’affinità tra l’arpa e il violino dichiarata nel titolo di

questa rara pubblicazione del 1667 colpisce subito, e ricorda le testimonianze di Agostino Agazzari, che nel suo trattato Del sonare sopra ’l basso del 1607 annovera l’arpa non solo tra gli strumenti ‘di fondamento’ quali cembalo e organo, ma anche tra quelli ‘di ornamento’, in questo accomunandola al violino.

Tra gli inizi del Seicento e la prima metà del Settecento esistono infatti diversi brani musicali con una parte obbligata ‘di ornamento’ scritta per l’arpa che concerta con voci o strumenti.

Gli autori sono molti, tra loro Stefano Landi (15871639), Luigi Rossi (1597-1653), Agostino Guerrieri (c.1630c.1684), Alessandro Stradella (c.1639-1682), Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), Giacomo Perti (1661-1756), William Lawes (1602-1645), Georg F. Händel (1685-1759), Georg Ph. Telemann (1681-1767), Michael Götz (s.d.), Georg Gebel (1709-1753), Johann M. Molter (1696-1765), Johann W. Hertel (1727-1789).* Nei brani seicenteschi, l’arpa concertante ha spesso una scrittura a due parti, basso e soprano, dove la linea superiore è simile alle coeve parti violinistiche d’insieme.. Nei brani più tardi l’arpa dialoga con il violino riproducendone il linguaggio, usando un discorso alla pari e a lui simile nell’ambitus della melodia, nella cantabilità della frase, nei gesti musicali. In alcuni casi, rari ma significativi, l’arpa raddoppia addirittura il violino all’unisono. * La quantità di questi brani d’insieme che includono l’arpa colpisce, se paragonata all’esiguo numero di composizioni scritte per lo strumento a solo. Abbiamo infatti unicamente quattro brani seicenteschi, eredità della grande Scuola Napoletana di inizio secolo, dedicati all’arpa sola (di Ascanio Mayone e Giovanni Maria Trabaci). Per quel che riguarda invece il periodo più tardo, vi sono esempi nel repertorio spagnolo e gallese e rari casi in quello tedesco.

I due strumenti sembrano dunque aver avuto un percorso a tratti comune.

Da qui l’intuizione: ricreare per l’arpa quel passato oramai perduto attingendo dal linguaggio del violino, suo compagno di viaggio nello scorrere del tempo.

Ho quindi scelto e adattato alcuni tra i brani più affascinanti ed emblematici del repertorio per il violino: le composizioni di Johann Sebastian Bach, Biber, Marini e Corelli.

L’idea si è rivelata felice: mentre molte musiche per la tastiera risultavano poco idiomatiche per l’arpa e spesso dovevano essere ridotte e semplificate, i brani per il violino funzionavano meglio e si potevano anzi elaborare ampliandoli ulteriormente.

Ho preso ad esempio le numerose trascrizioni dell’epoca delle opere di Bach e di Corelli, per capire quali fosCopyright © Flora Papadopoulos sero allora i metodi utilizzati nell’adattare un brano da uno strumento all’altro. Un’altra fonte importante sono stati i pochi brani espressamente scritti per l’arpa e in particolare la raccolta Musikalische Rüstkammer [Armamentario musicale], che ci fornisce prezioso esempio dell’idioma dell’arpa di primo Settecento in Germania.

Il lavoro di trascrizione si è rivelato ricco di esperimenti, ipotesi, ripensamenti, scelte, fino a raggiungere il risultato che presento qui, che altro non è che una delle tante fasi di trasformazione di musiche che i supporti moderni hanno saputo trattenere, e che un tempo forse sono esistite senza essere fissate nemmeno sulla carta.

— Poco si usa nell’Italia, molto nella Germania.

Filippo Bonanni, Gabinetto Armonico pieno d’Istromenti sonori, Roma 1722

È quanto scrive Padre Bonanni riferendosi all’arpa nel 1722. Ed è infatti un fenomeno ben documentato che la tradizione italiana dell’arpa, particolarmente florida nel Belpaese durante il primo Seicento, sia ad un certo punto migrata oltralpe.

Diversi furono gli arpisti italiani che lavorarono nelle corti germaniche, e, con ogni probabilità, furono loro i responsabili della diffusione delle arpe a più registri di corde: nella prima metà del Seicento Aloisio Ferrari fu attivo a Salisburgo e Paolo Da Ponte a Vienna, mentre Giovanni Battista Macchioni fu al servizio della principessa Adelaide di Baviera (1636-1676), alla quale pare insegnasse a suonare l’arpa.

Tra le corti e istituzioni religiose che impiegarono arpisti nel corso del Seicento e del Settecento vi furono Monaco, Stoccarda, Augusta, Jülich, Köthen, Schwerin, Weißenfels, Heidelberg, Stendal, Vienna, Breslavia, Königsberg, Braunschweig, Dresda, Ansbach, Würzburg, Hannover, Wolfenbüttel, Gotha, Kassel, Berlino.

L’arpa era diffusa non solo nelle cappelle di corte e tra la nobiltà ma anche nelle strade, nei mercati, tra gli studenti. La pubblicazione di Musikalische Rüstkammer, una raccolta di brani per arpa pubblicata a Lipsia nel 1719, è da ricollegarsi alle attività ricreative di questi gruppi studenteschi. Sebastian Knüpfer (1633-1676), Johann Schelle (1648-1701), Johann Krieger (1652-1735), Friedrich W. Zachow (1663-1717) sono solo alcuni dei nomi di compositori che hanno scritto cantate sacre con parti concertate per l’arpa a cavallo tra il Seicento e il Settecento.

Non vi era un unico modello di arpa in circolazione. Si può supporre che ogni arpista utilizzasse lo strumento che più era diffuso nella sua zona, oppure che meglio si

16 addiceva al proprio rango sociale, alla musica da eseguirsi, o semplicemente al potere d’acquisto delle sue tasche.

Comunque, le grandi arpe a tre file di corde di derivazione italiana rimasero in utilizzo a lungo, se si pensa che l’ultimo esemplare, posseduto dal Museo degli strumenti musicali di Lipsia, risale al 1793, ben oltre l’invenzione dell’arpa a pedali.

“L’ARTE DELL’OMISSIONE’’ E DELL’AGGIUNTA Aprire il disco con la Sonata “L’Annunciazione” di Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber ha una valenza simbolica e idiomatica: l’arpa è spesso associata, nell’iconografia e nella letteratura, alla trasfigurazione degli affetti, ed è proprio questo ciò che Biber cerca di esprimere nella sua composizione: la discesa dell’angelo dai cieli (Praeludium) e il fatidico annuncio (Aria), producono uno splendido e allo stesso tempo terribile turbamento, mutando gli animi e il destino dell’umanità per sempre.

La Sonata è una summa di quello che nel Seicento poteva essere il linguaggio violinistico, ricco di onomatopee, impregnato di misticismo, condito con un virtuosismo ancora novello, che esplora le possibilità dello strumento con freschezza, curiosità ed entusiasmo.

— Un atteggiamento pionieristico che caratterizza anche il compositore bresciano Biagio Marini. La nota Romanesca per violino solo e basso se piace è uno dei primissimi brani della letteratura dello strumento che si ispira all’Aria della Romanesca, una formula armonica ampiamente usata per la musica vocale. Da qui l’elastica sprezzatura nel ritmo e nella pronunzia che il Marini reinterpreta a meraviglia creando un nuovo modo di intendere la musica strumentale.

La voce diventa violino, il violino diventa arpa.

Un’arpa che Marini aveva conosciuto forse già in patria e che sicuramente aveva incontrato oltralpe. Ce

ne dà testimonianza nella sua Opera VIII, pubblicata nel 1629 allorché era maestro di cappella presso la corte bavarese di Neuburg an der Donau. La presenza di arpisti in Baviera si stava rafforzando sempre più in quegli anni e ne è una prova l’inclusione dell’arpa in una sonata e alcune gagliarde e balletti contenuti nella raccolta.

Poche pagine dopo, nella stessa pubblicazione, appare una tra le sonate più sperimentali del Marini (nel sottotitolo egli scrive infatti Sonate capricciose […] con altre moderne inventioni): la Sonata Quarta per il violino per sonar con due corde. La novità idiomatica dei bicordi al violino non può essere resa con lo stesso stupore all’arpa, la quale di conseguenza si avventura in altre nuove sperimentazioni che meglio esprimono il suo proprio idioma. Ne sono un esempio la sezione centrale, da me arrangiata in floridi arpeggi, e il passaggio di scale per moto contrario che introduce l’episodio conclusivo, che ho rielaborato per rendere, anche con l’arpa, l’idea di sorpresa e meraviglia che questa sonata vuole suscitare. Affettuosa espressività e fantasia si dipanano attraverso le sezioni contrastanti di questa ardita composizione in “stil moderno”, che alterna momenti di lirismo struggente a scatti di sdegno ed ira, come chiaroscuri in un dipinto del Caravaggio.

— Alle grandi architetture romane del Bernini ci fanno invece pensare le composizioni di Arcangelo Corelli, “l’Orfeo dell’Italia per il violino’’, come lo definì il compositore tedesco Muffat. In Corelli l’equilibrio della forma impone la propria esemplarità. Il suo stile è austero, nobile, incisivo, ma anche espressivo e appassionato. Ciò lo rese estremamente amato e celebre; enorme fu la risonanza che ebbero le sue opere in tutta Europa, dalla Germania all’Inghilterra, dove il culto del Corelli sopravvisse a lungo, oltre l’oblio italiano. Fiorenti anche gli esempi di emulazione, le trascrizioni e i riadattamenti di sue opere. La scelta di trascrivere

17 Italiano Menu la Sonata Decima dell’Opera V nasce infatti dall’esistenza delle sette variazioni per arpa sulla Gavotta, che ho inserito a mia volta, del grande arpista e compositore gallese John Parry (1710-1782). La predilezione di questo tema da parte di Parry è da ricondurre al fascino che le musiche del Corelli esercitavano in Inghilterra, ma è comunque interessante osservare come, anche in questo caso, un brano per il violino sia stato scelto per suonare all’arpa. È dunque una sonata con una visione internazionale, e spiccatamente all’inglese, quella che qui presento ornata di fluide cadenze in stile corelliano e abbellimenti alla Geminiani secondo la tradizione d’oltremanica.

— Meno diffusa, si sa, fu all’epoca l’opera del sommo Johann Sebastian Bach. I Sei solo a violino senza basso accompagnato del 1720 (meglio conosciuti come le Sonate e Partite per violino solo), non furono pubblicati finché il loro autore fu in vita, e si conservano quindi nella loro forma manoscritta.

Ho trascritto per l’arpa la Sonata Prima. Qui la scrittura per il violino si fa densa, complessa, tecnicamente esigente, polifonica. Ho voluto riportare questi aspetti anche sull’arpa. La scelta di trasportarla di una quarta, in re minore, è funzionale a valorizzare al massimo tutti i registri del mio strumento.

Per la trascrizione della Fuga mi sono avvalsa di tre versioni pervenuteci: non solo dunque quella per il violino (BWV 1001), ma anche quella per il liuto (BWV 1000), probabilmente realizzata dal liutista e suo allievo Johann Christian Weyrauch, e quella per l’organo (BWV 539), conservata in una fonte postuma e non autografa.

In particolare quest’ultima versione apporta molte aggiunte e modifiche rispetto all’originale per il violino. Da queste ho tratto ispirazione per elaborare un sistema di trascrizione valido anche per gli altri tempi della sonata.

Nella Fuga per l’organo l’aggiunta delle voci viene fatta quasi sempre al basso. Questo comporta un’armonizzazione molto diversa rispetto a quella risultante dalla versione per il violino solo.

Ho scelto di mantenere la forma della fuga a tre voci, e di non adottare quella a cinque dell’organo, tuttavia nei momenti di maggiore pathos ho aggiunto una voce, come del resto Bach fa nelle versioni per il violino e per il liuto. Ho adottato un contrappunto rigoroso e una condotta armonica costante nell’Adagio e nella Fuga, mantenendomi invece più allusiva e armonicamente vaga nella Siciliana e nel Presto.

Se infatti Johann Philipp Kirnberger, allievo di Bach, descrive quella del suo maestro come “l’arte dell’omissione”, [...] è impossibile aggiungere un’altra voce senza commettere un errore, e a parte tutto la voce aggiunta sarebbe goffa e non cantabile.

Johann Friedrich Agricola, un altro suo allievo, ci apre lo sguardo nella direzione opposta: Il loro autore (Bach) spesso le suonava [le sei Sonate e Partite] lui stesso sul clavicordo, aggiungendo le armonie nella misura necessaria. Anche qui, sentiva l’esigenza di un’armonia risonante che non poteva ottenere completamente nella composizione originale.

Lasciamoci con questa bella immagine! Il grande genio, seduto a quell’intimo e delicato strumento, riascolta sé stesso nella domestica libertà di un sempre nuovo ed ispirato improvvisare, e così trascorre il suo tempo, nello svago della musica.
