ELOISE HARDY

It still astounds me that every product has started off with one single idea Quote, Eloise Hardy

What do you think the role of designer is? I consider the role of designer in three ways,

To influence… how we use everyday items and how that can be changed through the power of design.

To be inclusive… we live in the 21st century where products are being used more by everyone

To create… designers never stop creating there is always

something that can be added or improved. It all starts with one single idea.

Growing up with a disability and being surrounded by design allowed me to take a different perspective on design. Learning how different people react to products is interesting to me and I have always enjoyed the researching process as it allows me to explore and see what’s missing in the market. When things start falling into place my passion for design really shows. Another process that I particularly enjoy is the sketching.

As a child I was surrounded with the possibility of being able to design anything that merely started off with a pencil and piece of paper, this started with me sitting on my dad’s stool in the garage doodling on his whiteboard. It still astounds me that every product has started off with one single idea. The design opportunities within this one idea can be immense. This shouldn’t overwhelm the designer and should be taken in its stride. This creates the excitement to see how far it can go. Every great design begins with a better story Lorinda Mamo

What I do outside my course?

Outside of my course I paint, I currently have my own website

called Zarrin Design where I create fluid art paintings. It is my way of expressing my thoughts and my love for colour, I can mix colours, experiment and come up with some amazing abstract art. I believe that as product design evolves through technology in the 21st century I truly feel that we are losing colour and the true meaning behind design, most products today seem to follow a monochrome palette. Colour tells a story in product design; it allows us to experience and bring the product to life.

Influences and values

My key values in design are driven by an interest on ethical design; sustainability (specifically manufacturing and waste, upcycling), circular economy and inclusivity.

Circlular Economy, Wrap

I personally believe that these features are what make good design

As a designer we have more control over what materials are chosen, the manufacturing process and how its advertised. So we should do this as ethically as we can by producing products to be used in a circular economy as products today are made to last a certain period of time not for life.

Project 1 - Designing for production

With the brief of creating a single or range of products with 2mm stainless steel sheet material with certain dimensions, I decided with my user profile to research into trends within the 60s/70s.This era is exclusively known for its warm colours and soft curvy shapes in homeware products. Looking into my user profile their home resembled a snap shot of the 60s/70s. Each product had its own story and aesthetic and I really wanted to create a product that had it’s own story to tell yet still be within modern trends. I decided to create a magazine rack since I wanted to create a functional yet pleasing design.

Through sketching I realised that many shapes didn’t work

and wouldn’t be suitable for it’s functionality. With these sketches I produced several models to which shapes were most appropriate together. Being able to model it allowed to experiment with different size handles or legs and it showed me which would be most suitable in the environment it would be used in.

Project 2 - Brand extension

Starting off with this project I was given the brief of to design an

innovative smart product for dogs that had to include an element of smart technology for the brand Tails.com. We were given several different user profiles in which I chose to design a smart dog toy to keep a dog’s mind active that needs a lot of entertainment. The owners are a time poor couple with two small children, living in a terraced house with a small garden.

To get a more in depth perspective of tails.com I did a brand analysis. As a brand they wanted to change the ‘one size fits all dog food’. Tails is user friendly company whose priority is improving dog’s quality of life and their customer care. So, when initiating ideas I really wanted to focus on the personalisation part for the dogs. I ended up experimenting with being able to mix match toy compartment on the base of the toy.

Project 3 - Future of Covid

For this project, we were assigned into groups. The brief was

considering that the UK guidance detailed for preventing the spread of coronavirus, design a product, service or system that enables commuting on public transport e.g. bus, train or plane.

Space Projector and light, Beth Grover

As a group we decided on public transport since the beginning

of the pandemic the use of public transport has rapidly declined in fear of coming into contact with the virus. As a society we have changed our behavioural patterns to avoid this however key workers and those who still must travel do not get the choice to stop using public transport.

We wanted to create a product that can be used post lockdown but

to help with the fear of proximity in trains. By going through ideas, we ended up choosing a projector that projects light onto the platform this lets individuals know which carriages are safe and empty or full.

Mounted on top of the door there is the light box which de-

tects the number of passengers boarding or departing the carriage therefore counting the capacity for each carriage. This will also enable passengers to see which carriage are fuller than others. This gives them time to move to another carriage down the platform instead of getting into proximity with others.

Conclusion

Being a small local artist myself I value small businesses owners. They take the time to create their beautiful work with sustainable materials that are usually scrap material or recycled that are made in the UK. This therefore allows me to be conscious of my design decisions for the future. By hopefully gaining experience through placements and university I would like to own my business in the future where I combine my fluid art with homeware products.
