Dear friends, On a perfect New England fall evening, 150 well-dressed friends of the college assembled in the Mary Dooley College Center, which was transformed into an elegant function room for the 90th anniversary celebration dinner of the college.

Since Mother John Berchmans and her congregation established this institution of higher learning in 1928, the mission has expanded but the spirit remains the same: to ensure that an excellent education in the Catholic intellectual tradition through the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph is available to all in Western Massachusetts, especially those least likely to access it.

This 90th anniversary year invites us to honor the vision, determination, and hard work of those who came before us. Through their accomplishments, Elms College stands ready to serve a diversity of students in a diversity of settings, and to prepare them to better themselves and the world through an experience-rich education.

Thus, it is with much excitement that we embark on advancing our mission in the next decade. Our laserlike focus is on enhancing the Elms Experience, a holistic combination of academic excellence, real-world experience, and spiritual growth. In this issue of Elms Magazine, you will read about projects that aim to do just that, with various examples of how these efforts are already bearing fruit.

• Our cover story relates the experience of computer science junior Babba Jaden, who completed research at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, thanks to a very competitive fellowship.

• In other articles, you will read how students took their learning across the globe, conducting research under the guidance of faculty or walking in the footsteps of our founders in LePuy, France.

• You will see how a friend of the college and an alumna and trustee are stepping up to support realworld, experiential learning at Elms through two generous gifts that created the Keating and Schneider Experiential Learning Fund and the Elms Advantage Internship Fund.

• You will also discover how one alumna made a transformational gift to support the college’s plan to renovate the Gaylord Mansion into a living-learning community.

• Elms College continues to be strengthened by the support and generosity of our many contributors, who are listed in the Annual Report section of this magazine.

New Frontiers

CITS major Babba Jaden ’20 spent his summer conducting research as an intern at Harvard University, analyzing data for their Data-Smart City Solutions initiative.

Babba Jaden is something like a 21st-century explorer, exploring the frontiers of data analytics. His skill with computer science netted him a $15,000 fellowship from Summer@Station1, a nonprofit that pairs students with startups, research labs, and think tanks in the Boston area.

Babba spent the summer working as an intern at Data-Smart City Solutions. This initiative — which is part of Harvard University’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation — gave him firsthand experience with the emerging field of urban science and technology.

For a city to become “smart,” civic leaders need to creatively use data to guide their decision making. This involves analyzing datasets to discover patterns, predict trends, and address issues before they occur. When average citizens get involved and share their data, society as a whole benefits.

Although Summer@Station1 introduced Babba to frontier science, this isn’t the first time that he has charted new territory in his life.

“Having that civil engagement with the community and government builds a strong bond,” Babba said.

When he was younger, Babba and his family fled from Ethiopia to come to the U.S. As a refugee, he attended Fugees Academy in Columbus, OH. The academy — which focuses exclusively on educating refugees — didn’t graduate its first class of seniors until 2016. As part of this inaugural class of graduates, Babba became a pioneer, crossing frontier after academic frontier.

One of the cities that he researched was Dallas, TX. After analyzing data on the rates of cat and dog attacks in the city, he produced a heat map showing how dangerous different streets and parks are for pedestrians.

He is the first in his family to go to college. He is one of the first graduates of Fugees Academy to attend college. His future plans include becoming the first graduate of the academy to earn his Ph.D.

Funding Richer Learning Experiences

Thanks to a generous donation from Richard J. Meelia, Elms College has established The Sisters Kathleen Keating and Maxyne Schneider Experiential Learning Fund to expand experiential learning opportunities for students.

This new fund will allow students to participate in unpaid internships and research experiences related to their majors or career interests; service-learning and mission trip experiences, whether local, national, or international; and study abroad trips.

The funding will be available to undergraduate first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors for experiences beginning in spring 2019, when several students students will receive funding to support their participation in such activities.

To be eligible for any of the funding categories, any student must:

In addition to earning a National Science Foundation grant as an ElmSTEM scholar, he was named 2017 NECC Player of the Year as a forward for the men’s soccer team.

“Elms has prepared me as a student to look beyond what’s out there, at what opportunities I can try so that I can improve my career and have an open mind,” he said. “Being a CITS major at Elms really helped me in this summer program.”

All in all, the long hours of data computation, progressive seminar discussions, and professional network building gave Babba a clear sense of direction for his career.

“Being here has given me more of an idea about what I should do next, what the big next move in my life is,” he said. “I’m thinking about grad school or research opportunities that I can also get into, just to expand my knowledge of computer science.” 

• Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate Elms College student at any campus location.

• Earn a minimum of a cumulative 2.75 grade-point average.

• Already have an offer letter for the learning experience prior to applying for funding; however, students who are scheduled to take part in mission trips through Elms do not need to provide this offer letter.

• Successfully complete the experience by August 31, 2019.

• Commit to delivering a presentation about the experience at an event in the spring semester.

Students who are selected to receive funding will be notified by a formal letter via email by mid-December, and will need to officially accept the funding within a week of notification.

Richard J. Meelia is a strong supporter of student engagement, student volunteerism, and student service to the community.

He served as chief executive officer and president of Covidien Ltd. from January 2006 to July 1, 2011 — after the company’s spinoff from Tyco — and grew it from $600 million to $10 billion. Now a principal of Meelia Ventures LLC, Meelia has been the chairman of Haemonetics Corp. since June 2011. He is chairman of Apollo Endosurgery Inc. and has been its director since July 2012. Meelia is also the former president of Infusaid Inc. He is member of several charitable boards, including St. Francis House and the Board of Trustees of St. Anselm College. 

CS/CITS majors: This fall, Elms launched two new majors: computer science (CS) and computer information technology and security (CITS). CITS prepares students for careers as information technology (IT) professionals, while CS focuses on the design and development of software and the algorithms that make code work efficiently. Both majors include a professional internship.

Biology Without Borders With funding from a 5-year NSF grant, Erica Van Ness ’18 and biology professor Nina Theis, Ph.D., traveled last summer deep into the heart of Trinidad to conduct research on tropical cucumber flowers, scent production, and fly-wasp interactions.

Student-faculty research happens every day at Elms. In fact, it’s one of the threads that makes the tapestry of our campus community so vibrant. But research projects that take place beyond the comfort of campus, outside the United States, are less of an everyday occurrence.

For Erica Van Ness ’18 and associate professor of biology Nina Theis, Ph.D., their interest in the ecology of scent production sent them on a transnational research trip last summer. On the Caribbean island of Trinidad, they harvested the fragrances of tropical cucumber flowers to better understand fly-wasp interactions.

Scientists have been unable to explain the extreme diversity of Blepharoneura, a genus of tropical fruit fly. They are also at a loss when it comes to understanding how wasps — the natural predators of the flies — locate their prey.

The Elms team hypothesized that scent holds the key to this eco-puzzle because the parasitoid wasps always manage to find

the flies, even though they feed deep inside the floral tissue, out of sight.

Over the course of two weeks, Theis and Erica collected 236 samples from three species of flowers. Between locating specimens, bagging the flowers and setting up tubing, trapping the fragrances of the flora, and processing samples in a field station, they worked around the clock, sweating it out in a tropical paradise.

Back on campus, Erica and Jeszy McGuire ’19, a senior biology major, processed the samples, which were then sent to the University of Massachusetts Amherst to be identified by their individual components.

This fall, a new cohort of biology students are running tests, trying to uncover patterns and hopefully discover whether a specific chemical compound acts as a signal to the wasps, leading them straight to the flies.

Conducting research internationally benefited her job search after graduation, said Erica, who is now a lab assistant at Avista Pharma Solutions.

“The fieldwork from this internship helps, because I’ve done the intense lab and field research that most students definitely don’t have at this stage,” she said. “Companies are telling me that they value this type of experience.”

“Research experiences for students are invaluable in today’s competitive world,” Theis said. “Not only do students learn how hard they have to push themselves, they also learn the skill of GC-MS analysis. Having this on a resume really makes our students stand out.” 

Exploring the Legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph

Monica Karriem ’20 and Jane Dugan ’20 spent a week in France this June, practicing their French, learning about French history and culture, and — perhaps most importantly — making personal connections with the legacy of the college’s founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph.

From June 16 through 23, Monica and Jane joined a pilgrimage to Le Puy, France, led by the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph (ACSSJ), of which Elms College is one of nine members.

Nursing Grads Achieve % 00 NCLEX Pass Rate 1 Class of 2018 graduates from our School of Nursing have achieved a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses).

This means that every one of the college’s 2018 bachelor’s degree graduates has passed the licensure exam.

“We are very proud of the 100% pass rate of our 2018 graduates on the NCLEX-RN,” said Kathleen B. Scoble, Ed.D, RN, dean of the School of Nursing. “A perfect NCLEX-RN pass

rate is challenging to achieve and a distinguishing outcome for a nursing program.

“I believe this reflects the quality of our nursing program, the culture of excellence we have worked to create in the Elms School of Nursing, and the quality and commitment of our community of nurses, across the continuum of healthcare sites, who contribute every day to the education of our students in their clinical learning.” 

Tufts heart transplant patient Dan King watches as Associate Professor of Nursing Joyce Thielen, Ph.D., RN, presents his daughter, Madison, with a certificate for her honors project, “Healthy Practices in the Young Adolescent Population.” Thielen and others in the Elms College School of Nursing brought Madison’s nurse pinning ceremony to the hospital in May so her dad could attend.

A pinning ceremony is a special occasion for every nursing graduate, but for Madison King ’18, her pinning ceremony was even more special.

In May, Madison’s father, Dan, had been hospitalized at Tufts Medical Center in Boston for half a year awaiting a heart transplant. He was in no condition to travel, and the family thought he would have to miss all of his daughter’s graduation festivities ... but Associate Professor Joyce Thielen, Professor Janet Moore, and others in the School of Nursing worked with the staff

from the Cardiac Care Unit at Tufts to bring Madison’s pinning ceremony to her dad, including the candle lighting. “That was huge,” Madison said of the effort. “It was so important to both of us.”

Dan was released from Tufts in September after a successful double-organ transplant -- heart and kidney.

He left the hospital with a new heart and kidney, a pair of red bedazzled hightops, and a brand-new lease on life. 

Elms College welcomed 471 new alumni when the Class of 2018 received their diplomas during the 87th commencement exercises on May 19. This was the first Elms College commencement ceremony for President Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA, since joining the college in July 2017.

The 2018 valedictorian was psychology and English major Mary Iellamo ’18 of East Longmeadow, MA. The commencement speaker, eminent global health leader Louise Ivers, MB Bch BAO, MD, MPH, delivered an inspirational address for the Class of 2018 and was granted an honorary degree. Ivers serves as executive director of the Center for Global Health at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and sits on the board of directors of the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, which is dedicated to providing health services to the people of Southern Haiti.

Elms also bestowed an honorary degree on educator, community activist, and visionary Shirley Edgerton of Pittsfield, MA. William F. Frain, former senior vice president at UBS PaineWebber and Elms College trustee, received the 2018 Via Veritatis Medal.

This award recognizes an outstanding Catholic person who exemplifies Catholic life and culture at their best, and who has made significant contributions to society. Frain passed away in August. Accepting the award on his behalf were Frain’s children, David Frain and Kerry Normandin.

GRADUATION OUTCOMES

Biomedical master’s grad Elizabeth AmaroGonzalez ’18 translated her experience at Elms into a position with Boston-based Decibel Therapeutics, a biotech company developing groundbreaking therapies to treat hearing loss.

Former Blue House Fellow Sage Giordano ’18 is putting that BA in English to good use, publishing work in prestigious literary journals such as Glass: A Journal of Poetry, Ellis Review, and The Penn Review. This summer, Sage moved to California to attend St. Mary’s College as a teaching fellow and a student in the MFA program.

Magdalene Eboso, RN, MSN, MBA ’18, is the infection control and prevention coordinator for the Sisters of Providence Health System in Springfield, MA. She credits the MBA program with giving her the business skills, interpersonal skills, and confidence to fully succeed.

Family nurse practitioner Jennifer Jordan ’13, FNP-DNP ’18, passed the FNP certification board exam in June and landed her dream job at Atkinson Family Practice in Amherst, MA. “I got my dream job, and it’s because of Elms,” Jennifer said. “They invest in you from day one.”

Elms Strengthens International Connections

Institution Univers staff members with President Dumay and members of the Elms staff who worked with them during their visit.

Over the summer, Elms College was honored to host two sets of visiting scholars from Haiti and Japan.

Four visiting staff members from Institution Univers in Ouanaminthe, Haiti — a large private K-12 school in Haiti — visited campus in July to participate in English Language Institute and MBA programs. The visitors were Marie-Claire Charles, Mission Team coordinator and Elms College MBA student; Azurenne Jn-Baptiste, kindergarten lead teacher; Rose-Nerlyne Similien, director of finance at Institution Univers; and Emmanuella Tonaime, nurse at Institution Univers Medical Centre.

“In a just a very short time, the staff have focused on learning English and making professional connections,” said Joyce Hampton, Ed.D., dean of student success and strategic initiatives at Elms College. “They are the future leaders of Institution Univers, and we are privileged to have a part in their leadership development.”

In August, several graduate students from the University of Kochi visited the Elms campus for courses in English, social work, and nursing.

The visiting graduate students in nursing were Kosuke Sasaki, Eriko Takenaka, Asuka Iwata, and Chinami Hara, and the social welfare grad student was Saki Wajiki.

They were accompanied

by Dr. Hiroko Azechi, nursing faculty; Prof.

Kyoko Takatani, nursing faculty; and Dr. Kimiko Nagasawa, dean of the Graduate School of Human Life Sciences and social welfare faculty.

Elms and Kochi have a 20-plus-year exchange agreement, which was renewed and extended in November 2017 in a ceremony here on campus. This is the first graduate-level exchange between our institutions.

Every year, under the existing agreement, visiting undergraduate students from Kochi have come during the spring semester to spend nearly two weeks exploring life at Elms, studying English, and learning about American culture.

The graduate students who visited in August attended classes and visited sites relevant to their work, including the Baystate Hospital emergency room, the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center, Gándara Center, and the YWCA of Western Massachusetts, in addition to experiencing American culture through sightseeing and cuisine.  Graduate students from the University of Kochi visited Elms in August.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

New Grants Boost Aid for Incoming Students This fall, Elms announced two new educational grants to help incoming first-year students offset tuition costs. The Urban Education Grant and the Catholic Education Grant each award new students $2,000.

Students attending Springfield, Chicopee, or Holyoke public schools in Massachusetts are eligible for the Urban Education Grant. The Catholic Education Grant is open to students attending a Catholic high school anywhere in the country. To qualify for either grant, students must be currently enrolled at their respective public or Catholic schools at the time of their application to Elms College.

All qualifying students will be automatically considered for these grants when applying to Elms; no separate application is needed for this funding.

These new awards can be paired with other merit-based scholarships and financial aid offered by the college, but not with each other.

“Elms is proud to expand its financial aid options for students from local urban school districts and Catholic high schools nationwide,” said Walter C. Breau, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs. “These grants show our continuing commitment to make an Elms education accessible and affordable to students.” 

Accounting Major Lands Competitive NABA Scholarship When accounting major Jonathan Lester ’19 of Dallas, TX, isn’t busy balancing spreadsheets, he can be found on the athletic field, practicing his long jump and triple jump, or mentoring kids at the Boys and Girls Club.

This commitment to excellence recently garnered him recognition from the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), Greater Hartford Chapter.

Selected for exemplifying the NABA’s mantra of “Lifting As We Climb,” Jonathan received a scholarship in spring 2018 that will help offset tuition costs during his senior year at Elms.

Like most student athletes at Elms, Jonathan approaches his goals with laser-like precision. To prepare for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam after graduation in 2019, he intends to follow the same formula that helped him win the NABA scholarship: methodically studying for tests throughout the week, and breaking his study sessions into manageable segments every night.

If all goes according to plan, he will continue his family’s legacy in business entrepreneurship. “I want to work for a top public accounting firm initially, and then maybe start my own business someday,” he said. 

New Programs Offer Options, Opportunities Several new programs at Elms College will allow students to pursue meaningful careers in fields including social work, computer science and education.

Master of social work: Elms has partnered on a master of social work (MSW) degree program with Saint Louis University, whose School of Social Work is continually ranked as one of the best in the nation. MSW students can choose from two tracks, clinical or community and organization, with varying choices for advanced standing or part-time or fulltime students, this program offers multiple paths to a master’s degree. An MSW opens up pathways to advanced social work practice as a professional social worker in governmental agencies, private businesses, and nonprofit settings, as well as fields including school or medical social work, crisis intervention, mental health, and domestic violence. www.elms.edu/socialwork Master of education: The Education Division has added 10 new concentrations in the master of education (M.Ed.) degree: English, history, mathematics, biology, autism spectrum disorders, moderate disabilities, literacy, ESL, socio-emotional learning, and applied behavior analysis. www.elms.edu/graduate-studies/education (For information on the CS/CITS majors, see page 3.)

Br. Michael Duffy, DNP, ANP-BC, conventual Franciscan friar, has been promoted to the position of associate dean of the School of Nursing. Duffy most recently served as coordinator of the accelerated second degree in nursing program; assistant professor of nursing; and director of the Elms College caRe vaN, a free health clinic on wheels that serves homeless and underserved people of Chicopee while affording clinical experience to pre-licensure students. He earned his bachelor’s degree from American International College in Springfield, MA; his master’s degree from the University of Lowell; and his doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree from Regis College in Weston, MA.

Amanda Garcia CPA, CFP, MS, director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Elms College, and MBA program director Kim Kenney-Rockwal, MBA, SPHR, each led breakout sessions at the Women & the Art of Risk conference in September at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA. Garcia led a session on “The Art of Balance” and covered three things women can do to enhance financial confidence. KenneyRockwal led a communicating Your Value session titled “The Art of Self-Promotion.”

Joyce Hampton, Ed.D., dean for student success and strategic initiatives; Brian Kapinos, director of advising; and Colin Moge, advising intern, presented at NACADA Region I, Massachusetts State Drive-In, at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in May. The title of their presentation was “Building an Academic Coaching Model from the Ground Up: Using Pre-existing Resources to Better Serve Our Students.” NACADA is a global professional community that promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.

Maureen Holland, MSW, director of social work at Elms College, and Scott Hartblay, MSW, associate professor of social work, delivered a lecture at the Sixth Social Work Symposium at the University of Memphis in Tennessee in April. They gave a presentation about Polish Catholic social worker Irena Sendler, who organized an

underground child-smuggling operation to help Jewish children escape the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. In their lecture, they demonstrated how they have incorporated Sendler’s work into the study of nonviolent leadership, human oppression, and cultural competence in macro social work practice at Elms College.

On Oct. 29, Kathleen Scoble, Ed.D., RN, dean of the School of Nursing, delivered a presentation with Christine Kluznick, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer of Baystate Medical Center, on a panel at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s annual leadership meeting in Washington, D.C. Their panel, which included representatives from the Emory University and Duke University Schools of Nursing and Medical Centers, was titled “Academic and Practice Plenary: Innovative Solutions to Advance Healthcare Transformation” and included highlights from three innovative partnerships. Scoble and Kluznick presented on the doctor of nursing practice partnership between Elms and Baystate.

Jonathan Scully, MBA, joined the college in September in the newly created position of vice president of enrollment management and marketing. Scully leads the undergraduate and graduate admissions, marketing, and financial aid efforts of the college. He comes to Elms from American International College (AIC), where he was dean of undergraduate admissions. Scully began his higher education career in 2006 as an admission counselor at Elms. He earned his BA at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and his MBA at AIC. Robert Southall, men’s basketball coach and interim director of athletics, was selected as the chair of the New England Region Ranking Committee with the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). Southall is now in his sixth season as head coach of the men’s basketball team.

President Harry Dumay, Ph.D., MBA, was asked to serve on the Finance Committee of the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE), now the federally recognized regional accreditor for the six New England states.

NECHE was formerly known as the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). This summer, CIHE was incorporated into a separate 501(c)3 corporation, mainly to meet the federal requirement that the regional accreditation agency be “separate and independent” of any other organization.

As it set itself as a new legal entity, the commission needed to elect officers. Dr. Dumay was also asked to serve as treasurer, and to sit on its Executive Committee.

On October 5, Dr. Dumay represented Elms College alongside delegates from scores of other U.S. and foreign institutions at the inauguration of Lawrence S. Bacow, JD, MPP, Ph.D., as Harvard University’s 29th president.

Grants Fund Computer Science Research The National Science Foundation has awarded associate professor of computer science Beryl Hoffman, Ph.D., two major grants for research on attracting students to the field.

The first grant, totaling more than $188,000, will fund a project designed to spark interest in computer science and related fields among middle school girls in Holyoke, MA. The project -- which will include participants from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Holyoke Codes, Girls Inc. of Holyoke, and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke -- will combine robotics, coding, and a simulated natural disaster situation.

The project, GIRLS (Girls Involved in Robotics Learning Simulations), was born after Hoffman met UMass Amherst College of Education professor Florence Sullivan at Holyoke Codes.

As part of the grant project, Elms will offer three paid internships, one per year, to junior or senior computer science or CITS (computer information technology and security) majors, who will help teach the robotics curriculum to the middle school students.

The funding for the three-year grant project, which stems from the National Robotics Initiative branch of the NSF, is $570,697; the Elms portion is $188,394.

Hoffman’s second NSF grant is for a study on broadening high-school-to-college pathways in computer science. She will participate in a collaborative study between four colleges; the lead school is Minnesota’s College of St. Scholastica. The funding for the three-year project is around $1 million; the Elms portion is $38,709.

The research team will study whether concurrent enrollment programs -- which help high school students transition to college by giving them the opportunity to take college courses while in high school -- can broaden the high-school-to-college pathway in computing disciplines for traditionally underrepresented students including female, underrepresented minority, and low-socioeconomic-status students. 

Elms College Marks 90-Year Milestone

Donors and friends of the college, community leaders, and many Sisters of St. Joseph helped Elms College mark the 90th anniversary of its founding during a special evening in October.

Sr. Kathleen Keating, SSJ, who was the college’s seventh president, was honored with the title of president emerita for her contributions to the college over the years.

Along with Sr. Kathleen, the gathering acknowledged all the sisters in attendance for their vision, their determination, and the strong example they have set of tireless service.

Representing the student body, nursing major Amanda Saczawa ’20 spoke about her reasons for choosing Elms College and the resources that have enhanced her experience as a nursing student.

President Dumay recognized some generous donors who, in recent weeks or months, have made leadership gifts at the six-figure level: Richard Meelia, who established the Sr. Kathleen Keating and Sr. Maxyne Schneider Experiential Learning Fund; Regina Noonan Hitchery ’71 and her husband, Joseph, who established the Elms Advantage Internship Experience; Fran and Marian Kirley, whose donation will help renovate the Gaylord Mansion as the Living-Learning, Community, and Cultural Center; and Cindy and Bill Lyons, whose commitments have supported various college projects, but especially provided seed funding for the Center for Urban Education.

“These pioneers agree that Elms College is poised like never before to advance the vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph: to empower students to better their own lives and to make a difference in the lives of those around them,” Dr. Dumay said.

The celebration ended with the vesper “The Evening Hymn to Our Lady,” movingly sung by the Sisters of St. Joseph. 

Alumna Leads Effort to Revitalize Gaylord Mansion Dr. Dumay and M. Eleanor Murphy ‘80 at the Donor-Scholar Brunch in May.

On the northern edge of the campus, at the corner of Springfield and Fairview Streets, Gaylord Mansion was built in the 1800s by self-made millionaire Emerson George Gaylord. The custombuilt Second Empirestyle mansion that served as his family’s primary residence is now in the city’s Historic District and in the National Register of Historic Places.

Elms College acquired the property in 1962 for $50,000. Many alumnae carry fond memories of living there when it was a residence hall; later, it served as faculty offices until deemed unsafe.

In October 2017, the board of trustees approved a plan not only to restore the architectural gem to its prior glory, but also to transform its upper floors to a living-learning community of students and its main floor to cultural activities and community group gatherings.

Architects Kuhn Riddle and Associates conducted focus groups with college constituents about its optimal use. Professor Janet Williams’ postbaccalaureate premedical students were excited about the prospect of having a place where they can live as a like-minded community and “study all night.”

When President Dumay shared these plans with alumna M. Eleanor Murphy ‘80, they reminded her of her own Elms experiences. She reminisced about the community that she found on campus and how they helped each other in many ways. She decided to underwrite the project with a transformational gift for the college of $500,000. “Gaylord is an asset with unrealized value, and I think Professor Williams’ students provide the catalyst to realize that value,” she said.

Murphy earned her bachelor’s degree in English at Elms College. She established the Eileen Quinlan Cook ’80 Endowed Scholarship as a testament to her college roommate’s love of learning and the importance that Eileen placed upon education in the field of technology.

Prior to her retirement, Murphy served as chief financial officer and vice president at Schwerin Boyle Capital Management in Springfield, which she joined at its founding in 1989. She began her career in 1981 at Kidder, Peabody. She lives in Whately, MA, with her husband Peter Crisci.

Trustee Francis P. Kirley is also supporting the Gaylord revitalization, with a commitment of $100,000. The nephew of Sr. Kathleen Kirley, Fran has been an Elms trustee since 2012 and previously supported the Sr. Kathleen Kirley Endowed Scholarship for Continuing Education.

He is president, CEO, and co-founder of Nexion Health. He is also president, CEO, and director of Nexion Health Foundation, which grants funding to health organizations and individuals, and of Kirley Capital Investments LLC. He and his wife, Marian, live in Sykesville, MD. Marian is the niece of the late Sr. Veronica Brown ’51, SSJ, who died in 2014.

Renovations are well underway. The plan is to unveil the new Gaylord Mansion by fall 2019. 

Her ‘Origin’ Story Education and English graduate Katie Condon ’12 is making waves in the poetry world For writers, getting published in The New Yorker is a crowning achievement, the stuff of dreams. Many go their entire careers with nary a publication in such a highly respected magazine.

But, only a few years into her career, education and English alumna Katie Condon ’12 has already had a poem published in The New Yorker — the poem, “Origin,” appeared in the Sept. 3, 2018, issue — and she’s still in graduate school.

“Moreover, the literature professors at Elms during my time, particularly Dr. Cerasulo and the now retired Dr. King, urged me to be a fiercely independent thinker, which is a quality that, I’m sure, has helped my poetry in ways I’m not even aware of.”

“Elms College is a bright gem in the evergrowing capitalist cavern of academia,” she added.

Today, she lives in Knoxville and is working on her Ph.D. in English with a creative dissertation in poetry. “As a part of this degree program, I also teach English courses,” she said. “While I mostly teach first-year composition, at the moment, I’m teaching an Introduction to Poetry course where students and I are studying and discussing poetry from Sappho to Cathy Park Hong. It’s been absolutely thrilling to teach this course so far.”

Katie, now a Ph.D. student at the University of Tennessee, has walked a winding path toward this achievement. “Since graduating from Elms, I’ve moved across the country and back, taught creative writing in the Houston public schools and wrote a lot of poems,” she said. “Most significantly, I received my MFA in poetry from the University of Houston and served as the poetry editor for Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts.”

The Elms Advantage Internship Experience Regina Noonan Hitchery ’71 and her husband, Joseph, recently established the Elms Advantage Internship Experience, which will prepare students for successful employment or graduate careers by offering experiential learning opportunities through internships and other types of hands-on learning.

Through the Elms Internship Experience, students will be able to receive advising on their postcollege plan as early as their freshman year, have their progress monitored through the Bolt Career Scorecard, have access to internship opportunities through an extensive network of businesses locally and abroad, and receive grants to help with unpaid internships.

New Trustees Appointed

The board of trustees at College of Our Lady of the Elms have appointed a number of influential figures to be new members of the board. “These new trustees bring a wide range of perspectives and experience to the board and will help Elms College find greater success as we move into the future,” said board chair Cynthia A. Lyons.

The new trustees are: University of Colorado and was a senior research fellow at Harvard. Habbal holds a B.S. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in physics, and has several business degrees.

Beth E. Anderson, founder/ CEO of Phoenix Charter Academy Network: Since its founding in 2006, Phoenix has grown into a network of three schools in Massachusetts, including one in Springfield.

Anderson is an alumna of Brandeis University, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Teach For America.

Previously the co-chair of Gov. Charlie Baker’s Education Transition Committee, Anderson was recently elected as board president of the Massachusetts Public Charter School Association.

Pascale Desir, chief legal officer of Way Finders: As chief legal advisor to the CEO and staff, Desir ensures Springfieldbased Way Finders is compliant in all aspects of its work. Prior to Way Finders, Desir was chief legal officer at HAPHousing and Medicaid state plan manager with the Office of MaineCare Services. A native of Haiti, she majored in history and studied international relations at Boston University before attending Suffolk University Law School.

Dr. Jose Fernandez, coowner of Sunrise Behavioral Health Clinic: Fernandez, who is retired from Springfield School System, opened Sunrise Behavioral Health Clinic, which includes a network of clinics in the Greater Springfield area. His current work focuses on mental health needs arising from opiate addiction.

Fernandez was born in Cuba and grew up in Puerto Rico.

Mark Fulco, president of Mercy Medical Center: Over the years, Fulco has served as Mercy’s senior VP of strategy and marketing and chief transformation officer. He has also served as system VP for health ministries at Trinity Health in Michigan, VP of strategic marketing and business development for Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT. Fulco holds a master’s degree from the University of Hartford, CT, and a bachelor’s degree from Clark University.

Steven Gobel, first vice president of Morgan Stanley: Gobel has worked as a financial advisor since 1983 at Bear Stearns, Shearson American Express, Smith Barney Harris, Kidder Peabody, PaineWebber, UBS, and Morgan Stanley. Gobel holds a B.S. in business management/economics from Manhattan College.

Fawwaz Habbal, Ph.D., executive dean for education and research and senior lecturer at the Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University: Habbal joined Harvard Engineering in 2002 as associate dean for academic planning and was instrumental in the development of the intellectual direction for bioengineering and electrical engineering at SEAS. Habbal is a member of the Applied Physics research group at SEAS, and is the director of graduate engineering studies.

He did postdoctoral research in Raman spectroscopy at the

Elms College has always felt like home for Susan E. Napolitano ’77, MAT ’98. Always. She just didn’t know it until she was looking for colleges.

When Sue was a child, she and her sisters lived at Brightside in Holyoke, MA — in and out of foster homes — for seven years. “When we were at Brightside,” Sue said, “we did a lot of shows around the area, singing and dancing. We traveled all around Western Massachusetts.”

Years later, her uncle, who had ultimately adopted her, brought her around New England to visit colleges. “I knew I needed a small school, because I knew I needed the discipline,” she said. “And the day I came to Elms and walked into Veritas Auditorium, I said, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been here.’ ” One of the Brightside shows, all those years ago, had been performed right there in Veritas. “I said, ‘This is it. This is where I’m coming,’ ” Sue said.

Sue double-majored in biology and chemistry, graduating in 1977 with a treasure trove of memories and stories — and valuable experience that landed her technical jobs. “Sr. Nora Harrington wanted me to go right into teaching, but I didn’t want to do that. Not right away. I wanted to use my hands,” she said.

So she went into engineering. First, she worked at Texon Inc. in South Hadley, MA, for a few years. “We made shoe insoles, battery separators — my name’s on a few of those patents,” Sue said. “I loved it. I was working with my hands, developing new products and stuff.”

Then she went to Groveton Papers in New Hampshire, where she advanced from quality control inspector up to quality control engineer. She met her husband, Robert J. Napolitano, when the mill’s union workers went on strike: Bob showed up late to relieve Sue from her shift, and an unlikely romance began brewing.

They got married months later, and have been together ever since — through good and bad, richer and poorer, sickness and health. They have decided to leave everything to Elms, in gratitude for all the knowledge and growth Sue experienced here.

“It was here at Elms that I understood who I was — not who my parents wanted me to be, not who anybody else wanted me to be,” Sue said.
