PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends, Let us look back on another year of achievements, accolades, and improvements at the College of Our Lady of the Elms. Our mission to empower students to “effect positive changes in the community and in the world” remains the driving force behind our efforts. We continue to grow our campus, our academic offerings, and our contributions to our local and global community.

The start of the 2011 academic year marked our largest incoming class ever, bolstered by the first cohort of students in our partnership with Springfield Technical Community College, and the new master of business administration program. Our first cohort of students in our partnership with Holyoke Community College received their degrees during the 2012 commencement exercises, paving the way for other programs and a new generation of Elms College alumni.

Our students demonstrated their deep commitment to improving the state of their world. Using resources from the campus as well as Holyoke Catholic High School, a group of nursing students created a fitness program for veterans at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke. The program met the Soldiers’ Home’s goal of

inspiring the residents to exercise daily, a routine that will be utilized for years to come.

Numerous students participated in the Rays of Hope Walk for breast cancer, raised money for UNICEF, or assisted in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Two of our seniors delayed their careers to volunteer in Ghana and Jamaica, respectively.

Our athletics program raised its profile this year.

Eighteen young men and women were named to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) All-Academic list. Women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and men’s volleyball teams were NECC champions and competed in the NCAA tournament.

Construction on the Center for Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) would not have taken place had it not been for the leadership of several key benefactors of the Elms College community.

continuing education. He is also the cousin of Walter Breau, Ph.D., vice president of academic affairs. Marian’s aunts, Veronica Brown ’51, SSJ, and the late Gertrude Brown ’56, SSJ, are both Elms alumnae. In addition, Fran and Marian were married in Our Lady’s Chapel.

Trustee at the College of Our Lady of the Elms and chair of the institutional advancement committee, Cynthia Lyons, and her husband William, offered a challenge to the trustees. Cindy and Bill committed $1 million toward the CNHS if it was matched by the remainder of the board. In addition, they promised to add another $250 thousand if the other board members matched their initial gift in 30 days. One month and $2.25 million later, the campaign was well on its way.

Fran is the founder and CEO of Nexion Health, Inc., a provider of nursing and rehabilitation services. He and Marian are committed to many educational, social, civic, and humanitarian organizations. The Kirley’s leadership commitment to the CNHS will go a long way toward promoting the education of the college’s students and the health of those in their care when they begin their careers.

Taking their role seriously as leaders at the Elms, Cindy and Bill Lyons volunteered to serve as co-chairs of the Campaign Steering Committee. They have been instrumental in connecting corporate and individual benefactors to the college and the campaign. Under their leadership, the campaign has, to date, secured public and private commitments in excess of $7.3 million—including a $3.2 million New Markets Tax Credit equity investment through the Massachusetts Housing Investment Corporation.

The relationship between Chicopee Savings Bank and Elms College is unique and long standing. Always a generous benefactor of the Elms, the Chicopee Savings Bank Charitable Foundation was inspired by the initial support of the CNHS project by members of the board of trustees and increased their support of the college with a $250 thousand commitment to the campaign. Instrumental in the negotiations for the college’s successful $14 million capital bond offering through Mass Development, Chicopee Savings Bank is leading the lending consortium for the CNHS project.

Also leading the way on the CNHS project are board member Francis Kirley and his wife Marian. Fran and Marian have strong ties to the College of Our Lady of the Elms. Fran is the nephew of Kathleen Kirley ’66, SSJ, Ed.D., former dean of

Leaving A Legacy The memory of three friends of Elms College will be woven into the legacy of the Center for Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS). Each supporter’s relationship with the college tells a unique story, but they all share one common thread: they proactively planned estate gifts to the College of Our Lady of the Elms so that their memories would be sewn into the banner of educational excellence that flies over our college.

On August 1, 2012, the College of Our Lady of the Elms lost a dear friend and longtime supporter, Helen E. Auth ’38. After graduating from Elms College, Helen did graduate work at Georgetown University, worked at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for 30 years, and retired to Naples, Florida, where she volunteered as a school librarian at St. Ann School and at many other service organizations. In 2006, Helen received the President’s Volunteer Service Award by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Collier County. This was an honor bestowed upon members who have contributed more than 4,000 volunteer hours to their community.

Auth Family Scholarship. A retired medical technician at the National Institutes of Health, Helen understood the importance of science and technology and in a meeting with President Mary Reap, IHM, Ph.D., earlier this year, requested that her estate gift be used for the CNHS. Two other benefactors will join Helen’s memory: Richard Dagesse and an anonymous donor. Richard, a friend of the college, left an estate gift in excess of $200,000 that was directed in support of the CNHS. Proceeds from a life insurance policy of more than $120,000, left by an anonymous alumna donor, will also be used for the CNHS. In designating the College of Our Lady of the Elms in their estate plans, these three friends of the college chose to support “a community rooted in faith, educated in mind, compassionate in heart, and responsive to civic and social obligations.” Their gifts will affect the lives of thousands of students who will utilize the CNHS, as well as the lives those students touch when they leave here and create their own legacies.

Amongst her many volunteer commitments, Helen remained a faithful advocate and supporter of Catholic education. She loved her alma mater and always recognized the value of her Elms education. She attended many of the Elms College alumni Florida events and continued to be an engaged alumna. In her lifetime, Helen gave generously to the college, including to the Auth Family Scholarship. Her sister, Marie Auth ’44, who predeceased Helen, also gave generously to the Elms and bequeathed a portion of her estate in support of the

Charline Pysher ’12 traveled to Ghana with Volta Aid Foundation to work in hospitals and clinics in the area.

Twenty-two members of the college community received the sacraments of baptism, communion, or confirmation during the Rites of Initiation Mass.

Students, staff, faculty, and alumni participated in the performance of The Lonely Soldier Monologues in Veritas Auditorium.

More than 40 students participated in the Rays of Hope walk to raise money for breast cancer research.

A community rooted in faith, educated in mind, compassionate in heart, and responsive to civic and social obligations.

Bobby Bailey, co-founder of Invisible Children, shared his film Invisible Children: Rough Cut and spoke to members of the college community about the KONY2012 campaign.

Jolanta Stryjczak ‘00, a native of Poland, visited several business classes to speak about her marketing experience with some of the largest corporations in Europe.

O’Leary Hall was remodeled with energy-efficient bathrooms, new carpeting, and a handicapped accessible ramp.

The women’s basketball team was NECC champions.

David Peters ’12 was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship to Taiwan, the first Fulbright in the college’s history.

Eighteen student athletes were named All-Academic.

Campus Ministry added two additional service trips this year: one to Baltimore, Maryland and one to McDowell County, West Virginia.

The men’s volleyball team was NECC champions.

Christina Borgatti ’12 received a Gaeltacht Summer Award from the Ireland-United States Commission for Educational Exchange to study the Irish language at the National University of Ireland in Galway.

The Career Center and Office of Constituent Relations sponsored a networking event with alumni and more than 40 students at a Springfield Armor game.

Linking Past to Present There is no better way to memorialize the collective spirit, energy, and legacy of a group of alumni than with the class gift. It unites the class by encouraging full participation toward a greater good. It enables alumni to give back to the fund that allowed them to afford a college education. This year, classes from three different decades showed their unity with generous gifts, but even better, outstanding participation.

The senior class gift is one of the greatest opportunities for departing students to impact the lives of future students at the College of Our Lady of the Elms. Many of the trees that dot the Elms campus are gifts from past classes. In recent years, the senior class has contributed to the annual fund, giving back to the institution that provided many of them with financial aid.

This year’s Senior Giving Committee approached the alumni board about a challenge gift. The alumni board agreed that if the seniors could raise $3,000, the board would match that amount. The Senior Giving Committee went to work and planned a kick-off event at the neighborhood pub. A local business owner provided free t-shirts for the event and made a generous contribution, helping the seniors reach their goal. With the alumni board’s matching gift, the total amount raised was $7,183. The senior class reached a 31 percent participation rate, improving upon last year’s rate of 11 percent.

Christopher Lyons, a graduate student in the education program who also holds a bachelor’s degree from Elms, has been accepted into the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program.

A group of nursing students designed a walking program for residents of the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke.

The guest of honor at this year’s Alumni Reunion was the class of 1962, as they officially became Golden Blazers and received their golden scarves during the induction ceremony in Our Lady’s Chapel. To commemorate the event, the class worked with the Office of Institutional Advancement to generate support for a class gift. Their efforts were rewarded with a class participation rate of 70 percent.

The class of 1962 was not the only group looking to leave their mark. Working on their own accord, the class of 1952 garnered a 68 percent participation rate for their class gift at the Alumni Reunion. The two class gifts combined accounted for more than 45 percent of the total reunion gifts. The participation and generosity of these two classes is representative of all alumni donors who faithfully assist their alma mater each year in advancing the institution’s participation rate. Last year alone, out of the reporting Catholic universities and colleges, Elms College ranked 11th nationally in overall alumni participation according to the 2011 Voluntary Support of Education Report.

Whether one is a member of the class of 2012 or 1962, the class gift is a reminder that you and your classmates are making a lasting impact on the future of your alma mater.

Ways of Giving An Elms College education is a steppingstone for many of its graduates - to lives full of meaningful work, success, and service to others. It is an investment that yields tremendous personal dividends.

Gifts of all sizes allow us to provide the financial assistance that many of our students need to reach their academic goals, to develop innovative academic programs, to respond to the demands of today’s world, and to acquire and improve our human resources, facilities, and equipment.

Many of our students have access to the Elms only because of benefactors like you who support what we do and how we do it. Your gift really does make a difference here.

Gifts of Cash Gifts of cash and credit card are available for immediate use by Elms College and are tax deductible. You may choose to visit www.elms.edu/give for a direct credit card gift or call to arrange for monthly credit card deductions. Electronic fund transfer (EFT) is also possible.

Gifts of Securities These gifts may include stocks, mutual funds or bonds. Donations are credited at fair market value on the date of transfer to the college. A gift of highly appreciated securities will assist the college and at the same time reduce or eliminate the taxes paid on capital gain.

Matching Gifts Many businesses and corporations match the gifts made by employees, retirees, and family members. To obtain information about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office or use the Elms weblink to search for your company.

Gifts through Retirement Plan You may include Elms College as a beneficiary of your plan.

Gifts of Personal Property A gift of capital assets (art objects, rare books, equipment, etc.) can be given to the college for its educational purposes. Responsibility for appraisal rests with the benefactor. The Elms has discretion to sell or retain the items.

Gifts of Real Estate Gifts of real estate can be given to the college outright or transferred to the college in a bargain sale, upon discussion, review and approval of the transaction. Some benefactors may be eligible to contribute real estate to the college and reserve the right to occupy the property in your lifetime. Each plan has its own tax and income benefits.

Planned Gifts Planned Gifts are a wonderful way to support the Elms. Some types of planned gifts allow benefactors to receive income tax credits or deductions while ensuring they or loved ones receive income as well.

Gifts by Bequest By naming the College of Our Lady of the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, it is possible to leave a significant legacy to the college. You may select a specific dollar amount, designate a fixed percentage of your estate, identify specific property or after relatives and friends have been provided for, leave the remainder of the estate to the college.

Annuities and Trusts Gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts are examples of life income contributions to Elms College. These gifts provide an opportunity for one to make a contribution to Elms College and at the same time increase annual income, receive a tax deduction and reduce taxes on capital gain.

Gifts of Life Insurance The college may be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. It is also possible to invest in the Living Legacy program and name the college as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. Policies are affordable and allow benefactors to make a major contribution to the college.
