Editorial

We have already reached the fifth edition of more biker experiences. It is a hard job to have this magazine on the air, but when we meet our loyal readers and congratulate us or tell us they have learned something new... that is the fuel that fuels our effort and we move forward. In the next editions there will be more experiences with national and foreign guests from different parts of the world. We do not just look for Spanish speakers, the language is not a barrier.

We will also look at more motorcycles of different cylinders and designs, because for us,

the bike is a motorcycle.

We will continue investigating and testing all the myths in health, safety and mechanics that we share, since nothing comes out in this magazine without being checked for a while.

All this in order that we can publish authentic news, functional advice and real lessons. We try that nothing is overlooked.

In the streets we will continue to help as we have been doing day after day, sometimes we

Biker Letters Hello to all the readers of El Motero magazine.

The first time I met this magazine was because of a strand I had on a Sunday in the Alto del Vino at 10 o’clock at night, the chain had burst.

Luckily I was in an emergency whatsapp group and asked for help.

Two minutes later, a motorcyclist told me that he could help me, that he happened to be drinking a red wine at the Terpel de la BoyacĂĄ pump and that he was going to take an hour to do the favor of putting the helmet on the floor. with the against the bike a couple of steps.

I thought it was a joke, who was going to hit a tremendous trip just to help me? Said and done, bequeathed to the hour. He kindly introduced himself with an oriental name, which caused me curiosity.

He told me about this magazine while he helped me fix the chain with a chain lock that I had in my pocket. He also told me that he was free because he had just left the office... very curious this character.

Being honest, I learned a couple of things in the short time we talked and I arranged the chain, very formal. I wanted to pay him, but he did not want to charge me, he really did it for the biker community.

At the end of the night, I managed to get to La Vega to join my family. I told them and they could not believe it.

I decided to go to the Facebook page, El Motero Original, and I found interesting the publications and the magazine that they have.

It shows that they devote time to articles and research... you learn a lot.

I decided to write to them, not only to thank them for the saved bike (which I will remember for many years), also to congratulate them for the great work they do selflessly. You can see that in their work team they have a great passion for this biker culture.

I also have to tell you that I got curious about the virtual mechanics course and I really learned a lot. I still can not believe it’s free.

I hope I can gather a small group so we can learn a little more about our bikes.

¿Suzuki DR Big 2020?

It was speculated that it could be one of the 10 new models that Suzuki promised for 2020, along with the new Hayabusa, the GSX-R 1000 with new variable distribution and the Recursion 700 with turbo engine, in addition to a possible GSX-R 300 and some others that we still do not know... We talked about the Suzuki DR Big 2020, which had to be a replica of that incredible 800cc single cylinder (previously it was 750cc). It was evident that in the Big 2020 the engine would be two-cylinder, derived from the archiprobado V-Strom 1000. The swingarm is the same as the V-Strom and the fork looks like it, with the same radial clamps. The front tire is also 19 “alloy, and not 21” and radios. The two-time winner of the Dakar, Gaston Rahier, managed to win the Rally of the Pharaohs in 1988 with a DR Big 800.

Different types of safety standards for helmets 1. SNELL standard The Snell Memorial Foundation has developed more stringent requirements and testing procedures for motorcycle helmets taking into account racing activities, such as drag-racing, motocross, karting.

However, buying a helmet that is Snell certified is completely voluntary. Snell standards do not replace local standards.

Many motorcycle riders believe that the Snell certification is a better benefit at the time of purchase. This is because the SNELL standards allow more forces to be transferred to the head of a biker than the DOT standard.

2. DOT standard The official law of the United States states that all motorcycle helmets sold must be “certified” by the DOT. Helmets that do not meet the minimum standards of this certification can not be sold as “motorcycle helmets”.

Many countries have laws that require motorcycle drivers to wear acceptable helmets. Most of them have defined their own sets of standards that are used to judge the effectiveness of a helmet in an accident in order to minimize the damage caused by the accident.

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) provides the requirements for the “DOT” certification of all helmets sold in the United States.

Independent motorcycle helmet safety standards

The Economic Community of Europe (ECE) is in fact the most widely used safety standard for motorcycle helmets at an international level.

ECE 22.05, required by more than 50 countries worldwide (this is based on NTC 4533). One of the advantages is the requirement to perform the mandatory tests of ECE 22.05 of the United Nations Economic Commission for helmets before their release to the public.

Below are some of the safety rules for motorcycle helmets issued by independent or private organizations.

3. ECE 22.05 Standard

This means that the helmets go on the market complying with the ECE 22.05 standard thanks to the fact that in these countries they force the tests to pass before they leave the factories.

4. ACU GOLD standard In the United Kingdom, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) defines a stricter standard for careers than the minimum legal specification ECE 22.05. Only helmets with an ACU Gold tag can be used in competitions. Many bikers in the UK choose helmets with an ACU Gold tag for their day-to-day use.

What do these safety standards prove?

Helmets sold in the market that have met certain requirements are subject to laboratory tests.

Laboratory tests measure a helmet’s ability to absorb impact. The effectiveness of the retention system that keeps the helmet on the head and accessories such as the helmet visor.

What is the difference between them?

These safety tests measured the performance of the helmets, as well as the ability to absorb the impact. However, the methods and requirements vary dramatically from one standard to another.

In some countries, government agencies monitor and control compliance with helmet safety regulations. In other countries, the responsibility is left to the helmet manufacturer or the item distributor.

No helmet designed for a particular standard can provide maximum protection for all types of collisions and no helmet can protect the biker from all foreseeable impacts.

What safety standard is approved for careers?

Helmets that have the ECE 22.05 standard certification are approved for competition events by:

championship races on the road, motocross and off-road events, including the great world of Moto GP. Helmets that are certified for both DOT and ECE 22.05 offer the highest level of protection for the biker.

What motorcycle helmet safety standard is superior?

There is not a single security standard that is superior to the others. These safety regulations are applied by the respective governments to protect motorcycle drivers. However, a motorcycle helmet with either of the two standards will provide protection to the motorcycle driver either a $ 100,000 helmet or $ 3,000,000 pesos.

••In case of accident, a folding helmet is easier and safer to remove by medical equipment.

5. COMPLETE HELMETS Some advantages of using this type of helmet are: ••Reduces air currents to be built with a single piece.

••Effectively protects all areas of the head.

••It can be used in all climates.

Remember, it does not matter which helmet you choose (brand or type of helmet).

The most important thing is to invest in a really good helmet, no matter what the cost. It is your life that is at stake and the difference between surviving or not falling is the helmet.

Always buy it in authorized stores of the correct size.

These 11 maintenance errors affect your motorcycle... but also your safety!

Having a motorcycle does not just mean getting on it and moving from one place to another. Having a motorcycle and having it in good condition requires attention to several things and one of the main ones is maintenance.

Carrying correctly the maintenance of our motorcycle involves paying attention to several details that are often overlooked and that can affect not only the health of our travel companion, but also can directly influence our safety.

There are certain very common mistakes that should be avoided at all costs.

1. Do not check the oil level One of the main mistakes that is made in the most basic maintenance of a motorcycle is not to check frequently the level of engine oil. It is a very simple and quick operation that can avoid many headaches.

If our engine does not have enough lubrication, it will quickly be damaged, and irreparably. If we get to griparlo, part of the money that will cost us the repair, we will put ourselves in serious danger if it occurs in March.

2. Do not use the appropriate oil That the engine bears the right amount of oil is vital. But no less vital is that the oil is appropriate. Not all engines need the same viscosities and additives. There are motors that need specific oils to maintain their different parts in optimal conditions.

For this, it will be enough to see the oil recommended by the manufacturer and respect

4. Tensioning and lubrication of the chain The chain of the motorcycle is one of the elements subjected to greater efforts and that more is overlooked in many cases. It is very important that it is well lubricated and with the perfect tension to minimize the wear of the entire drag kit, composed of attack pinion, crown and chain.

There are motorcycles with automatic lubrication systems, but in any case we must be vigilant. You also have to make sure that the tension is correct and regulate it when you have too much slack to prevent it from coming out, but being careful not to strain it too much to prevent splitting or premature wear.

5. Forget about the crown and the attack pinion In many cases, the crown and the pinion are the forgotten ones, because they are as important as the chain to transmit the force to the rear wheel. Due to the vibrations and the stress that they support, the screws that anchor it to the hub of the rear rim or to the sprocket are loosening.

If we do not tighten them from time to time, the crown can be torn off the rim and cause serious damage to our motorcycle or to ourselves. A good trick is to use screw sealant.

In this way, it will be very difficult for them to loosen themselves. You also have to check the condition of the teeth, if they are deformed, change them.

6. Do not check the wear of brake pads and discs This we must do especially for our security. Running out of brakes is an unpleasant feeling when you go on the move.

Apart from the serious danger that we will run, if we let the brake pads wear too much they will damage the surface of the disc and we will have to replace it with the consequent economic outlay. Crouching every now and then to check the thickness of the pills’ stoves will save us money and dislikes.

7. Do not clean the suspensions If our motorcycle has telescopic forks (conventional or inverted), it will have catches.

And if you have oil seals to keep the oil inside the bar, they can crack or tear. One of the main culprits that this happens is the dirt that accumulates in the overalls.

If we clean it regularly, the seals will be in good health for much longer. If they break, the oil leak can also force us to change the brake pads in the event that they become impregnated. Therefore, giving a little cleaning to the suspension bars is always a good thing. There are small specific tools to carry out this operation and they are very cheap.

Do not go over the main screws A motorcycle is a machine and as such, it is exposed to great vibrations. These vibrations, with the passage of time, cause that the screws of the chassis and rigid parts are loosening little by little.

If we do not squeeze them from time to time, we run the risk of loosening and eventually falling, leaving parts of our motorcycle loose.

This usually happens in screws of the body, handlebars, controls... Spend a few minutes to check that the screws that we see are tight always will be good.

The manufacturer is the one who best knows the motorcycle and we must follow carefully all the maintenance advice that it offers us. It costs nothing to take a look at the manual and plan maintenance following it.

Lubricants: All you need to know

Once you start your motorcycle, the oil brings the motor to life. It is a fundamental part of the mechanics of your motorcycle. We have compiled a series of tips that will help you better understand how your motorcycle oil works 18

The tires put your motorcycle in contact with the world.

If you do not take care of them correctly, however well you have the rest of the components, you will not be able to extract even the smallest part of the potential that “your dear” allows you. Something similar happens with the oil in your engine, because if you do not take care of it properly, the heart of your motorcycle will not work at the right performance, even “dying”. Engine oil not only lubricates the main components, but also reduces wear and discharges the heat that the engine and clutch produce.

Following the pneumatic-lubricant parallelism, one might think that if an oil is capable of dealing with the performance of a 4T MotoGP, it would be ideal for the motorcycle you have parked in your garage. The answer is no. Lubricants for street bikes must meet targets that are out of competition and they have been designed to be used in reduced time periods. It’s as if you used a slick for every day. And if it rains? What if you have to make a trip of many kilometers? Not to raise it.

Here are some keys provided by specialists such as Motul, Castrol or GRO that will help you understand that the lubricant of your engine is one of the most vital sections of your motorcycle and in which you must put more effort to maintain it correctly.

1. How often should the oil of a 4T motorcycle be changed?

If your bike uses a relatively small amount of oil and serves to lubricate the engine, transmission and clutch, it should be changed more often, not exceeding intervals every 2,000 km. If the oil only serves to lubricate the engine and its content is about three or four liters, it is advisable to change it every 5,000 km.

In terms of its useful life, it is normal for

brands to guarantee their products up to two years after their production date.

2. Are there differences between the lubricant of a motorcycle and that of a car?

Most 4T cycle bikes have gearboxes integrated in the engine block. In this way, the oil lubricates the propeller and the gearbox, for which specific additives are required in relation to a car and, in addition, do not penalize the operation of the so-called wet clutches.

In cars, the lubrication system is specific for gearboxes or clutch, which are not lubricated at the same time as the engine. Likewise, lubricants for passenger cars have not been developed to supply the densities capable of withstanding the high powers of modern motorcycles.

In the case of motorcycles with dry sump, the lubricant of the engine must lubricate and protect the gearbox and protect an engine that reaches high temperatures, protection that with a lubricant for automobile engines can not be provided.

3. What is the difference between a synthetic lubricant and a mineral lubricant?

It is said that a lubricant is “mineral” when its base comes from refined crude oil. For its part, synthetic lubricants use bases made by chemical reactions.

The process for obtaining a synthetic lubricant, compared to that of a mineral oil, is more complex and, therefore, more expensive.

Before talking about this bike, I would like to tell you a little about how I get to this bike. Since I entered this world, I have always liked the scooter line, for its ease of handling.

My first bike was the well-known Yamaha BWS 125. I had it for 2 years

and it seemed like a motorcycle that did its job. From the house to the office and from the office to the house... until I started going out with friends on a motorcycle.

There came a time when it was hard for me to reach them and they had to wait for me.

The time came when I had to change my bike, and I was very sad to go out with them for my motorcycle.

At that moment my second bike arrived, the SYM Joymax Comfort 300, a motorbike that surprised me for its comfort and power.

In those moments I knew I was going to have it for a good time, at least more than with the BWS. The funny thing is that it was not like that.

It was a story I saw on the internet about the launch of the Honda X-ADV at the EICMA... it made me curious. I had already heard about the systems of exchange by a friend who had the NC 750, added to its design.

For this reason, I decided to take the risk and spoke with the people of Honda of the 126.

They treated me and advised me very well with respect to the bike. Being such a new product, I had to wait several months... until it arrived in Colombia.

I decided to buy it with some of its

accessories. The moment they gave it to me was when I got on it for the first time. The seat is not very tall, but it is a little wide. With my 1.75 meters, I reach the floor, but nothing serious.

It was at that moment that I understood what I had bought. The number of buttons, the number of options, the system of changes... the chain... a chain on a scooter. That had never been seen.

After an hour of induction and to explain everything I had the motorcycle... I went for a walk around the city.

My first impression was the power... Although it has the manual mode and 3 sport modes, I decided to use it in automatic mode, while I got used to it... but I did not want to get off of it. I was very excited.

To be honest, I had a lot of intrigue about the Rizoma footrest that I bought additional to the bike. I saw many videos that showed me what this girl is capable of doing... so I decided to go out and shoot with a great friend, Chucho, who has a Twin Africa.

I did not tell him about the motorcycle, I wanted it to be a surprise. The moment he arrived and I showed him... his face was “What is that?�. I could not stop laughing. I told him a little about what this scooter was capable of 23

and, since he has several uncovered driving practices, he wanted me to teach him a couple of techniques to take advantage of this bike.

He accepted, but on condition that he was allowed to prove... clearly, I accepted.

That weekend we went on the road to a place that he has to practice (I do not remember what his name is). A route that usually goes some weekends that has no plan, just to practice. Going on the road on this bike is amazing. It feels very good the aplome that has and gives a lot of confidence to take the curves. The response of the automatic system is incredible. When we overtook the cars, if the motorcycle was in low revolutions, it gave a blow of gas and automatically lowered a change to deliver all its potential.

The road experience was very good, but the best was about to begin. When we arrived, I lent the motorcycle to Chucho, so he could take a ride and know how far he could go 24

with it... it was incredible to see him drive my motorbike.

I saw him skid, go fast, jump... do things that I would never have thought of doing on a scooter (the truth is that Honda created a new segment in the world of motorcycles).

When Chucho finally got off the bike, I saw him surprised. He told me that he had never imagined driving a scooter like he does with his Africa. Of course, it is not at the same level, but because of its suspension and type of wheels, it is achieved.

Then I understood that my options to get out had been increased thanks to the bike. Now my limitations are in my knowledge and management techniques.

After a couple of weeks with Chucho... rather a whole month, I started to master the off-road driving with my “scooter�. I understood the

theme of the footrest and the good purchase I had made.

I also started to understand the world of Adventure bikes, without leaving my world of scooters. Every day that I go out with her, I say “the best decision is to buy this bike”.

Little by little I also started to play with the changes. The curious thing about this bike is that in the automatic mode you can raise or lower the changes and the bike accepts it, and it continues to make the changes.

Now, in manual mode, it also has its technology. By the time I started using manual mode, I obviously forgot to make the changes 26

(because of my scooter mentality). The funny thing is that the bike itself gets the change that happened to me.

Definitely Honda took her out of the stadium with this system. This bike gives me a lot of confidence and it extended my chances of going on a trip, regardless of the terrain.

Now that I know what the X-ADV is capable of, my little great warrior, I want to advise with Honda to put some bars to protect the motorcycle a bit more, a metal mesh in the lighthouse (if it has one, like the one they put him in

A great advantage is that you can drive several vehicles with this application (be it car, motorcycle, bus or truck). This means that you can control several vehicles.

The importance of lighting

There are multiple studies on the DRL, from its acronym in English, Daytime Running Lights.

Many think that the norm is a simple whim of the government. The simple fact of carrying the lights on a motorcycle seems absurd. The funny thing is that this rule has been studied for many years worldwide.

Let’s start with the study conducted by the United States Department of Transportation. According to the results, more than 50% of accidents between motorcycles and other vehicles have occurred during the day. According to accident reports, drivers have not been able to see the motorcyclist.

Based on numerous field tests and laboratory studies, it has been shown that motorcyclists who drive with the lights on are more visible than those who do not.

According to the analyzes, it has been shown that its visibility increased from 53.6% to 64.4% (tested with a 40W lamp and a 180mm headlight). The results also confirmed that two headlights or one greater than 180 mm is much better than smaller ones.

These studies continue all over the world, to such an extent that the laws have been modified to keep the lights on during the day. In a few countries the same rule applies to cars.

As absurd as it seems, these studies that have been done since 1960, say the opposite. Having the lights on gives us a chance to be seen during the day. The studies also reveal that the larger the headlights or the motorcycle has 2 headlights, they are more effective. Visibility is improved with light changes (high and low).

We must bear in mind that at the time these studies were made, the technology in lighting was basic, we are talking about incandescent lighting.

We currently have different types of bulbs that provide us with superior lighting quality. But, with the light bulbs, the design and materials of the reflectors have also evolved to disperse light from the bulbs.

Now that it has become clear to us that the lights are important for our safety, we also have to consider another couple of factors for the safety of others.

First of all, we must learn to calibrate our lights. Normally, in the manual of our bikes, we can know which are the screws to raise,

lower, move to the right or to the left our main lighting.

Once we have this point clear, we must put the bike in front of a white wall at a distance of 8 meters. We measure the height of our lighthouse with all the equipment that we usually carry and we mounted on our motorcycle; omitting any of these things the light varies.

On the wall we put a horizontal mark with tape from the height of the center of the headlight to the floor; This is our first guide.

La Barra: Good place to share a moment with special people, enjoying a dish made with typical ingredients from the area and served in a gourmet way. Very good ambience of the place which generates a pleasant feeling of familiarity and comfort. Staff attention in a special way. The recommended dish is the Cazuela de Fríjoles Reina.

The next day I realized this incredible place.

Quiet with many options to do... rides, horses, pool, lake... rather. I had a small breakfast (tray paisa) rest and left again.

Again the route took me to the Espinal, where I decided to have some lunch. I met another old friend of routes and decided to have lunch in a place that they recommended us... Lechonería La Autentica.

We came to the conclusion that it was the best suckling pig we have ever eaten... until now.

Both fans of the pig, we could not pass up the opportunity.

Again we take route both for Bogota. Once this great adventure was over, I turned on my phone and thousands of messages came to me everywhere. Back to the routine.
