hello

Merry and bright Ever wondered how the gals from Kip&Co decorate for Christmas? No surpise it’s bright and colourful! Check out the whole home on p52.

photography maree homer (elle); nikole ramsay (christmas tree)

PS If you’ve got a passion for interior design, why not study it over the holidays? Theinteriordesigninstitute. com.au offers an online course that you can do in your own time. Nice!

I ADORE CHRISTMAS. The decorations, the food, the gifts (giving and receiving!) – but most of all, I love how it brings people together. December 1 arrives and all of a sudden everyone’s desperately cramming their calendars with drinks, dinners and get-togethers before the New Year. I’m no exception. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, I love having my girlfriends over for a fabulous evening of Champers, festive tunes (check out our playlist on p42) and exchanging gifts. It’s always so much fun, and easier to pull together than you think! Flip to our cover story on p36 to find out how. Decor tip: baubles don’t have to go on the tree – simply spread them down the centre of your table and tuck in some sprigs of dark, pine-like greenery. Speaking of foliage, on p162 we have a gorgeous story on making Christmas decorations with leaves. Just be sure to ask your neighbour if you intend on harvesting their garden for your supplies. Another space-saving idea is to buy or DIY a mini tree (p170). There are options made from glass, rattan and ping-pong balls. Yep, ping-pong balls. If you’ll be a guest rather than a host this year, my one piece of advice is to always bring a gift. There are loads of perfect pressies in our guide on p118, but if you’d prefer to make something, try our edible gifts on p180 (the brittle is divine). We even show you how to wrap them. However, wherever and with whomever you spend Christmas this year, the real living team and I wish you a safe and magical holiday. Until next year, friends!

How did you come to develop your unique techniques? I’ve worked with the same minimal shapes, colour and graphic style since I started creating and over the years I’ve developed and progressed it. I see something in my head and I just have to get it out, so I experiment with mediums – paint, collage and sculpture.

Candle-maker Cire Trudon survived the fall of French monarchies and the invention of electricity. Today, its legacy of luxury is brighter than ever FRENCH MONARCHS HAVE A THING for Cire Trudon candles. Iconic emperor Napoléon Bonaparte presented one to his son on the day he was born, while the last king of France, Louis XVI, continued to order them even as the French Revolution descended upon Versailles. But before they enchanted the halls of grand cathedrals and the courts of doomed rulers, these candles were sold from a shop on rue Saint-Honoré owned by Claude Trudon. Up until that point, people could only buy candles made from rather foul animal fat, but Trudon used filtered beeswax that he exposed to sunlight, turning the wax pure white. Years later, when Claude’s descendant Jérôme bought the Royale des Cires wax factory, Trudon became synonymous with luxury. The wax was washed with fresh water and the wicks made from the finest cotton. They burned for hours sans smoke and the flames never crackled or spluttered. In 2007, the company took the name Cire Trudon and focus turned to creating exquisite perfumed candles, fragrances, room sprays – even sweet-smelling matches – with world-class perfumers. These scents draw inspiration from historical figures, biblical verses and far-flung places. One might lead you inside the mossy walls of a convent, another to the floral meadows of the Château de Versailles. Close your eyes and the scent of pine, lavender and patchouli could even turn your home into a villa in Provence. And as for Napoléon, Cire Trudon immortalised him as a wax bust, so now he can grace dinner-party tables for years to come. R

Founded in 1643, Cire Trudon’s motto is Deo regique laborant. It means, “They (the bees) work for God and the King”.

15

These Cire Trudon multicolour pillar candles pay homage to Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress. Her face appears on the gold cameos.

2018

This Christmas, Cire Trudon is launching three Odeurs d’Egypte candles, including this Philae candle. Its notes of papyrus and cedar are inspired by the Nile.

WHEN YOU CO-OWN A BEDDING AND INTERIORS brand that’s synonymous with vibrant colour and playful prints, your Christmas decor style is bound to follow suit. And that’s certainly the case for Kip&Co co-founder Alex McCabe, whose St Kilda home is decked with vintage treasures and modern pieces in a rainbow of hues come Christmas time (and all year round, for that matter!). The tree is laden with baubles collected from around the world, while velvet Kip&Co sacks and brightly wrapped presents sit underneath. MERRY MEMORIES In a fitting end to a successful year at Kip&Co, self-appointed “Chief Christmas party planner” Alex likes to organise a meal for the whole team. “It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does have to be intimate so we can focus on good conversation and a silly game or two,” she says. At home, the new mum’s revelries revolve around friends, family, food… and a little Francis Ford Coppola. “We do cocktails with friends on Christmas Eve, spend Christmas Day with my parents, my sisters and our families, and I’ve started a recent tradition of watching The Godfather on Christmas night – it helps with digestion,” she tells. TABLE TALK This year Alex has gone for an eclectic Mediterranean theme for her Christmas table, complete with summery tablecloth, beaded place mats, retro cutlery and flourishes of gold. In a nod to childhood Christmases spent on the Mornington Peninsula, she likes to serve fresh seafood, and lots of it. “The table is always full,” she says. “Once one set of dishes is cleared, we put down more and go another round.” To balance it out, Alex adds a crisp green salad and cocktails made with fragrant botanicals and citrus, while, “an eclectic grab bag of classic Christmas tunes and covers” plays charmingly in the background. Child’s play Christmas has new meaning for the Kip&Co ladies now they have children. “There’s something a little bit magical about the pure joy and innocence that the little rug rats bring to the party,” Alex says. From left: Alex and Quincy, Kate and Viv, Zig, Chloe, Baye, Hayley and Floyd.

how to create zones within an open-plan space

1

Use contrasting paint colours to deine spaces. Here, Alex’s living room walls are white, with the entry and dining areas painted Haymes “Eyrie Blue”.

2

Alternatively, create zones with style items in the same tonal palette. Alex’s couch, cushions, rug and artwork all feature shades of tan, yellow and pink.

3

Use an area rug to divide a large space into smaller, more distinct areas. Case in point, this Kip&Co “Island Life” rug ills the living area perfectly.

4

The placement of furniture is also key. Alex’s sofa from Bisque Traders is right at home along that wall, while a long table anchors the dining zone. A real living

57

Brass act Alex’s kitchen features a specially mixed pink concrete island, bamboo crocodile quartzite splashback, bespoke Jason Blake stools and brass cabinets that she and Bobby aged themselves using apple cider vinegar. Indoor plants trail down from an internal garden built above the cabinetry. Buon appetito “The key is colour, abundance and maximalism,” Alex says of her casual Christmas table, which includes a quirky fruit bowl by Kaye Clancy, Zara Home champagne flutes and serving dishes passed down by family. Three commissioned artworks by Fred Fowler fill the wall behind.

who lives here?

Home grown The first thing that greets you when you arrive at homeowner Lisa’s door is a wreath she handmade. Free style “It was a conscious decision to minimise colour and amplify texture,” Lisa says of the all-white palette. “A neutral interior offers clarity and calm.” White cedar walls and a James Lane sofa enhance the depth of the original timber floors.

Lisa Madigan, an artist and stylist, her husband Rob, an auto electrician and mechanic, and their Dalmations Oberon and Mia. This gorgeous home is also an Airbnb. @lisamadigan @thecottagekangaroovalley A

65

Feast for the eyes Rob made their dining table using timber from a friend’s property. It’s just the right size for having lots of friends over. “We love to entertain,” Lisa explains. “It’s a special thing to host people and make them feel loved, relaxed and welcome.” @reallivingmag

66

67

SUNNY WEATHER, SLEEP-INS AND CHAMPAGNE – these are at the top of Lisa Madigan’s wishlist. They also say a lot about her style and her home away from home in Kangaroo Valley, The Cottage. Nestled in the thick of pristine forest and bush, Lisa and her husband Rob lived here for eight years, then moved to Sydney’s Northern Beaches. At Christmas, they steal away from the city and head to their country retreat. “A weekend away gives us time to breathe and be,” Lisa explains. “The Cottage makes us feel welcomed and loved.” NATURAL WONDERS Florals are often present in Lisa’s creations and styling, and her home is filled with foraged foliage from the bush and armfuls of greenery. “We love to bring the outdoors in – it’s one profession where it’s good to bring your work home!” she laughs. Her approach to Christmas decorating is an extension of her style. “Our decorations are ephemeral, natural elements like branches, blooms and candles. I dance while I put them up, Rob helps when I can’t reach!” CUSTOM MADE On Christmas Eve, Lisa wraps the gifts in newspaper and embellishes them with a sprig of rosemary or a flower. The wrapping is a nod to The Cottage – in the 1890s it housed the local newspaper. Look closely at the timber floorboards and you will see a smooth mark where the printing press used to be. WITH LOVE Now, back to the Champagne! It’s not Christmas until Nat King Cole is playing and the table is laden with filled glasses, roast pork, plum pudding and oysters. Lisa says they buy fresh seafood from the Sydney Fish Market – “we love the buzz!” – and when guests come over there’s always extra bubbles in the fridge. With so many of their family living overseas, the celebrations can be an intimate affair, or involve travel. “We dream of having a white Christmas, but for now we’re soaking up the sunshine and the seafood.” R

Golden hour At this time of year, Lisa can be found in the kitchen, making the most of the afternoon sunlight that comes through the window. The Ikea island creates extra bench space – perfect for festive food prep. Favourite feature The original brick fireplace is what first drew Lisa and Rob to their home. They found the mirror at a market. Christmas cheer Lisa’s go-to when throwing a dinner party? Champagne and cocktails, served in beautiful glassware with freshly shucked oysters. “I’m a super-organised host and love every minute of it!” Love, actually Christmas morning holds a special place in Lisa’s heart. “It’s a treat to share it with my husband unwrapping presents, with good coffee and lots of cuddles from our dogs.” Diamond in the rough Naturally worn timber and concrete reflect The Cottage’s countryside surrounds. Christmases past and present are celebrated in this refurbished apartment, with old family treasures and a few new traditions

Ever green Homeowner Mette left the roots of her Christmas tree intact so she can replant it when the holiday season is over. She likes festive, vintageinspired decorations, like the glass boxes from HĂźbsch, which she has ďŹ lled with ornaments and pine cones and displayed on the living room shelf.

Close knit Mette and her daughter Ines stand under a sprig of mistletoe in the kitchen doorway. Mette says they chose black for the kitchen cabinetry because “it’s more luxurious than a white kitchen, which would make the style feel more countryside”. Scrub up nicely Natural light streams through the window above the kitchen sink. The Primy curve mixer was chosen to match the cabinet handles, which are from Genbyg. All the trimmings An assortment of miniature baubles from Retro Villa are hung from a branch of pine cones in the living room. Rather than facing the Christmas shopping rush, Mette looks for decorations all year round. Baker’s delight “We wanted a kitchen that reflected the style of the apartment,” Mette explains. They went with a fit-out from Ikea because it was budget-friendly and came with a flexible return policy. A real living

77

Gather round Mette bought the dining table from another family. Despite its worn condition, it had sentimental value that she couldn’t pass up. Both the rug and Fog & Mørup chandelier were secondhand finds and the furry throws are from Ikea. A

SHOULD YOU POP INTO METTE MAU’S HOME this Christmas, you’ll probably find her in pyjamas, with her family, sipping tea. There’ll be carols playing, and something delicious baking in the kitchen (the wooden benchtops are perfect for making dough). For Mette, it’s a time to relive old memories and renew traditions. “Christmas needs to be beautiful, not a showroom,” she says. “That’s what department stores are for!” FORMER GLORY The family of four live in a spacious apartment in the same part of Copenhagen where Mette grew up. Although it was the size they wanted, the previous owners had stripped away the apartment’s original detailing, so before moving in she and husband Tony restored it to its former style. “We tried to bring the apartment back to the great home it once was,” she says. Tony knocked down walls and refurbished the old panels, and they put in a kitchen to complement the rest of the house. ANGELS SING Just like her home, Mette prefers decorations with history. “We don’t care about fashionable ornaments, we care about the story they tell,” she says of their collection of stars and travel souvenirs. By the end of November, the baubles are hung and dishes are filled with cookies. In this old apartment, new traditions are celebrated too. “We collect angels, and every year we buy a new one to represent the year that has passed. When the girls decorate the tree, the angels are the last things we put on.” A WONDERFUL LIFE Of course, it wouldn’t be the holidays without lots of friends and good food. Christmas lunch is roast pork – a family tradition. “It’s important that we choose a pig that has had a good life,” Mette adds. Set up in the dining room are model toy train tracks that Tony puts together every year. And there’s plenty of room for guests to sit around the table where they play games by candlelight, drink sherry and eat Danish honey cake. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. R

homes Stroke of lilac Contrasting materials create a cosy feel in the living room. The velvet cushions and Bolia sofa add an elegant ’20s touch, which is pared back with a delicate Le Klint lamp and timber coffee table. During the reno, the oors were sanded and lacquered, and Mette mixed this purple wall colour using leftover paint. A

Wish upon a star Wall panels and crown mouldings can resemble an office interior if painted all white, so Mette went for two-tone warm grey walls in the dining room. The sculpture on the floor belonged to her dad and she found the star at Ikea.

how to make a big room feel cosy

1

Drape throws over chairs and sofas, layer with cushions, and position a rug or two on the floor to create textural and visual warmth.

2

If you can’t ill the entire space, make a cosy “zone”. In this room, the rug, dining table, chairs and lamp sit in the centre.

3

Add colour. If you prefer a neutral palette, choose paint shades and furniture that have warmth, like this grey wall colour.

homes

Peace and quiet Mette wanted her bedroom to feel relaxing, so she chose a lavender blanket from Broste Copenhagen and pillows from H&M Home. The woven pendant is from Ikea, and the star was once a department store Christmas decoration. Hang out Snow gear, scarves, hats and a feather duster are stored on a floating shelf with hooks, which they found at a market in Berlin. We are family “Christmas reminds us to live in the now,” Mette says. During the holiday season, Mette, Tony, Ines and Noa (all pictured) make spending time together a priority. In with the old A vintage street lamp above the kitchen bench is a nod to Mette’s love for pieces with history. The cups are from Boutique Taeko in Copenhagen, the baubles are from Retro Villa and the teapot cover was homemade. The wall behind is painted in Flügger “Salem”. A real living

Winter wonderland Ines loves the movie Frozen and wanted this painting in her room because it reminded her of the film. The artwork was passed down through Mette’s family, and inspired the colour of Ines’ bedroom. Here, Ines (left) sits on her bed with her sister Noa. The bedspread is from Menu.

IN IDA THESTRUP’S COSY 1920S APARTMENT, Christmas is kind of a big deal. Her parents cultivated and sold Christmas trees when she was growing up and she would start the Christmas countdown six months early – even now Ida has an annual gathering of friends and family to make decorations and bake cakes for the festive season ahead. “I cook with my mother and sister for a whole day. We end up with enough cakes for the entire month of December!” Ida says. Her large kitchen is the heart of the apartment and is used for many of the Christmas activities and it’s also where guests tend to congregate. DREAM HOME FOUND Ida and her husband Morten took their time searching for the perfect apartment; a home with soul and the possibility of a huge, open-plan kitchen/dining room. They found what they were looking for in this 102-sq-m home in Frederiksberg, a 10-minute bike ride from the centre of Copenhagen. The couple were also inspired by the high ceilings and natural light that was streaming in through the large windows. They renovated the property themselves, including sanding and painting the floors, creating wooden wall panels and knocking through three rooms to make their large kitchen. ALL THE TRIMMINGS The home is now decorated with a blend of Danish design classics, raw textures and vintage style. The couple love to play around with contrasts, using a black-and-white palette as the base, while cushions, ceramics and graphics add a touch of colour. “I like to combine new and old, dark and light, and soft materials mixed with raw ones,” Ida explains. She and Morten consider traditions, comfort and aesthetics when they decorate for Christmas, opting for a warm, homemade and natural feel with lots of candles in antique candlesticks, rustic branches, pine cones, traditional baubles and always a real tree, albeit a crooked one. “I know how a perfect Christmas tree should look but, much to my parents’ despair, I love the odd-looking ones that lean to one side,” Ida says, smiling. “I like that they look a bit wild.” R

O’ Christmas tree You can bling up just about any tree, but these three will make a statement

norway spruce Picea abies For a traditional look, you can’t go past this classic. Its dense foliage can be shaped into a perfect cone. They can be repotted each year so that they grow for a few more years or plant in the garden.

wollemi pine Wollemia nobilis They have short, thick olive-green needles which hold decorations easily. It will happily grow in a pot long after the holiday season, as long as you give it a dose of fertiliser in spring.

norfolk island pine Araucaria heterophylla A more mature tree will have thick, horizontal branches that look impressive when decorated. It will survive for a week or two indoors, but is best kept in a large pot outside. @reallivingmag

advent calendars Make a classic cardboard calendar You’ll need a basic paper-mâché advent box that has individual drawers – they’re sold in craft shops. Paint the inserts (one for every day in December until Christmas) in festive colours or wrap them in paper, then fill each one with a little surprise.

Like to sew? If you’re skilled with a needle and thread, why not make your own advent banner? You’ll need a piece of fabric, 24 pocket squares, and a branch or rod to hang it. You could also make a knitted or quilted version with numbers and Christmas characters sewn into the design.

Repurpose a desk organiser A small set of drawers designed for keeping make-up items and stationery organised is the perfect size for storing miniature gifts. They’re available in lots of designs, they’re easy to label and stack, and when December is over you can keep it on your desk or beauty counter and use it as storage.

Hang some bags and string Raid the bottom of your pantry for paper bags, pegs and some twine, ribbon or thin rope. String the twine along a mantel, chalkboard or curtain rod, then hang the paper bags numbered 1 to 24 with the pegs. For a rustic touch, use jute drawstring pouches and fill them with coins, sweet treats or trinkets.

Decorate a fabric shoe organiser If you’ve got a shoe organiser – a plain one with separate sleeves that can be hung on a door – you’ve got yourself an advent calendar! Make sure it has at least 24 shoe pockets and is made from opaque material to keep what’s hidden inside a secret. Number each pocket and trim with lots of tinsel.

Use envelopes Pin 24 envelopes to a cork noticeboard in neat rows, with their openings facing outwards. To make it festive, use green, red, gold or glittery envelopes – whatever works with the rest of your decorations. Get creative with what you put inside and swap chocolates for photos which feel a little more sentimental. R

front door refresh First impressions count. Give your place a whole new look with a fresh front door colour – the perfect holiday project! Preparation is the key For best results, allow plenty of time to fix any imperfections and sand your door thoroughly to ensure maximum adhesion. Wipe down with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dust; allow to dry. Not to prime is a crime! If you’re painting a new door, a coat of primer is recommended to seal and provide the ideal base. If repainting, it’s fundamental to know what the existing paint is that you’re about to paint over. Read on… Use the methylated spirits test Rub some metho on the existing paintwork to determine your best painting technique. If it dissolves or softens, it’s acrylic and can be recoated with acrylic paint or primed with a one-step primer coat and then coated using enamel (oil) paint.

If the surface doesn’t change, it’s likely to be an enamel paint – apply an oil undercoat then cover with either an acrylic or oil top coat. Cover it up Mask everything you don’t want painted, such as the door handle, hinges and catch, with painter’s tape. Lay a drop sheet. It’s time to get painting Apply two coats of exterior paint in your chosen colour. For the best finish, use a roller for the main surface area and interior edge and a brush for any decorative elements like panels. Allow a minimum of two hours drying time between each coat. TIP For a seamless look, paint the front of the door and its interior edge the same colour, and paint the opposite side of the door (the inside) the same colour as your interior walls. R

HOW TO EARN & SAVE

money moves to make It’s the most wonderful (and expensive) time of the year! Money mag’s Eie Zahos ofers some clever tactics to avoid a Christmas blowout

1

BUY GIFTS ON POINTS One of the smartest things to buy with reward points is a gift card. You can save it up for when money’s tight (hello, Christmas) and can also use it during sale periods to get more bang for your buck. To ensure you’re getting the best value, calculate the “point currency” of your reward program. This is basically how many points you need to earn per dollar. So, for example, if you need 7000 points to redeem a $50 gift card, the point currency is 140 for every dollar. You can use the point currency to compare rewards – the lower the number, the better. So let’s say 7000 points gets you a $50 gift card (point currency: 140) or you can get a $60 toaster for 8000 points (point currency: 133). You’re better off getting the toaster… but personally I’d prefer the gift card!

2

LIMIT SELF-GIFTING How oten do you go Christmas shopping for your family and friends only to end up with a git for yourself? Oten we justify this self-giting when the item is on sale, but don’t be too harsh on yourself – everyone has a spending trigger and a good sale sign can trip up even the toughest budget planner. The best thing you can do is take a deep breath and give yourself 24 hours to think about the purchase. As the saying goes, “If you can’t walk away from a deal then you won’t get a good deal”.

Zip it Keksi Räsymatto pouch in White/Red, $40, Marimekko.

3

CHECK YOUR LIST TWICE Santa shouldn’t be the only one keeping tally! To avoid a financial hangover of epic proportions, it’s a good idea to draw up a budget for your Christmas spending – not just the presents, but the additional expenses associated with food, drink and socialising. Avoid spending more than you have to at the supermarket by being aware of their sneaky marketing tricks. By all means, snap up a half-price bottle of Champagne, but remember, these special buys (called “loss-leaders” in the industry) are priced that way to get you through the door. Buy what you came for then head for the door before you can be tempted to veer off course.

Clip art Basic stainless steel brass money clip, $18, Airisu.

4

MAKE MONEY WHILE YOU SHOP ShopBack is the new app that can help you earn up to 30 per cent cashback at more than 600 popular online retailers, such as ASOS, Chemist Warehouse, Dan Murphy’s, Rebel Sport, Woolworths and even Menulog. You don’t have to use the app – you can still get cashback by using the website to make purchases. However, the app does ofer additional app-only sales that you can’t get through the website. It will generally take up to 48 hours for the cashback to be credited to your account, and you’ll only be able to withdraw your cashback ater you’ve accumulated at least $10. Perfect for buying that next item on Santa’s git list! R
