t the Elliott School of International Affairs’ U.S. Foreign Policy Summer Program, participants from the United States and around the world study the complex factors that shape U.S. foreign policy. Taking full advantage of its location at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs in downtown Washington, DC, the program features briefings at key institutions that influence U.S. foreign policy, as well as lectures and seminars by leading scholars and experts from government offices, think tanks, international organizations, nonprofit organizations, the media, and foreign embassies.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The summer program, now in its 12th year, features lectures by Program Director Dr. Kimberley L. Thachuk and the faculty of the George Washington University, as well as by guest speakers from a wide variety of organizations. Participants will have access to the libraries at the George Washington University, the National Security Archive, the Library of Congress, and other research libraries in Washington, DC. In addition to attending lectures, all participants work on group projects and write a policy memorandum on a U.S. foreign policy issue of their choice. After the two-week program is completed, participants write a substantive research paper on U.S. foreign policy. Upon successful completion of the program, participants earn academic credit from the George Washington University.

Each day is slightly different, but usually includes guest speakers interspersed with lectures by the program director and visits to institutions around downtown Washington, DC. Please contact the program coordinator with any questions about the schedule.

ENGAGING WITH THE ELLIOTT SCHOOL The Web Video Initiative (WVI) connects the Elliott School’s unique resources to a global audience and is an excellent way for students to engage from abroad. In 2013–2014, we posted more than 50 videos from nearly 40 events on the Elliott School’s website, iTunesU, and Vimeo. This included seven events that were streamed live to a global audience via the web. Our popular “International Affairs Inbox” video series allowed Elliott School faculty to share their expertise and insights on developing global events. In 2013–14, faculty discussed the 2013 German elections, the continued upheaval in Egypt, the nuclear talks with Iran, global economic governance, the crisis in Ukraine, and the outbreak of violence in Iraq as part of the series. In June 2014, Dean Brown offered his analysis of President Obama’s foreign policy speech at West Point. Social media is another way for students to engage with the Elliott School. Twitter followers come from 118 countries and include a number of prominent individuals and organizations, including U.S. President Barack Obama, the Council on Foreign Relations, World Bank Africa, the U.S. Mission to NATO, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and NPR News. facebook.com/elliottschool @elliottschoolgw
