OBJECT I VE S TAT EM ENT PR O FIL E I am a 21 year old student, currently studying in my third year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree at ARA Institute of Canterbury. As a young child, my dream was always been to become an Architect, and to one day contribute to designs that are built in the city that I have grown up in. I attended high school in Christchurch at St Andrew’s College, where I discovered a passion for architecture and my commitment to a future in the industry.

I pride myself on my work ethic, and dedication to the architecture industry I want to work for in the future.

My studies have taught me to be well organised, show attention to detail and a motivation to learn new things.

Upon graduation I will be looking to work within a firm that focuses on contemporary residential architecture.

I have a passion for designing modern housing, as I love to create designs that can interact with a site and its features. I have experience in designing towards a client brief, as well as creating my own designs that are both conceptual and detailed developed. My course has a heavy focus towards the technology aspects of architecture, which allows me to have a strong knowledge of the NZ Building Codes, NZS Standards and construction aspects of a structure.

My goal in this industry is to one day have my own established firm, where I can contribute towards the evolution of this city.

The Performing Arts Centre, located within the heart of the Performing Arts Precinct is a venue designed to draw people into the centre of the city for entertainment and the expression of the arts. The exterior of the building features exposed timber rafters along the curved roof line, leading into the rich timber foyer, creating a warm and inviting space, with a dynamic room to view from below.

The warm timber aura is continued into the Auditorium, along with the use of traditional Theatre materiality such as vibrant red fabrics. People will enter into a grand foyer where they can socialise and enjoy refreshments, before entering the 120 person auditorium up a grand stairwell. The building includes a fully equiped backstage area and rehearsal studies filled with natural lighting behind the privacy of louvre screns.

Located on a prominent site in Sumner, the purpose of this multi-use detailed concept design is to draw the local community together in the heart of the seaside township.

The building will serve as a hotspot restaurant for central Sumner, and host a workshop and exhibition space for community showcases and events. The second level of the building includes a 3 bedroom apartment facing the street with a smaller 2 bedroom apartment situated behind.

Rooftop terraces accessible from each apartment provides a perfect space to take in the beautiful Sumner landscape, for gatherings with family and friends of the residents. The initial concept design was inspired by the environmental topography shapes, viewed from behind the building. The rolling Clifton, Richmond and Scarborough Hills and the view up N the valley down he street is elements that have been incorporated into the design form of this building.

Located at 9 Dublin Street, within the Christchurch Central City is a high end multi-unit townhouses development. For those that wish to live within the four avenues of the city, this site is within close proximity of Hagley Park and the Victoria Street cafe precinct.

Activity in the area is busy, with amenities such as cafes and shops within walking distance to the Christchurch CBD. Using inspiration from local case studies designed

by Warren & Mahoney and Matz Architects, I was able to identify shapes and elements to form the volumes for these units.

I looked at how the concept could be designed with shapes that define one particular viewed side of the volume, while appearing significantly different from another perspective. The units are all three-story, with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an open plan kitchen, living and dining space, and a garage for off street parking.

Each unit has an outdoor terrace, providing a space for outdoor gathering and views. The second floor of each unit has a mezzanine with a void that looks down over the living area below.

A transitional pavilion is a temporary structure that will be used as a multi-functional gather space- with a design style influenced by local context. The Pavilion will be used as a cafe and meeting space during the daytime, then be flexed into a space for learning, entertainment and presentations by night. The proposed design is inspired by the forms and shapes created through broken glass fragments.

This acknowledges the broken city after the earthquakes, with a new architectural identity rising from the destruction.

From the broken pieces comes new fragments, which can be put back together piece by piece to construct the new city. The randomness of the volumes creates a space that appears frozen in motion on the outside, while the interior is a dynamic blend of airiness and intimacy.

Located on a sloped site in Huntsbury, this Villa designed for a young family is heavily catered to the northern views of Christchurch and the Canterbury plains.

This house was fully developed to NZS 3604 standards, and NZ Building Code specifications. The concept rational is a three volume design, with the house divided into three areas across the two floors. The middle volume is an entrance atrium, with heavy glazing bringing in light from the north. This open space acts as a junction to the living area to the west, and the garage and office area in the east. The stairwell leads to an bridged hallway, separating the children’s bedrooms and the master bedroom. This design features red cedar vertical shiplap timber cladding, creating a modern and warm aesthetic to the villa.

The final stage of this project was an interior design for the kitchen. I was able to research existing concepts and case studies to design a contemporary kitchen design for my villa design that was detailed and to standard. I was able to experiment with selections of different materials, and develop joinery that would be acceptable to this suite. Corresponding electrical plans, construction details and ergonomic placement was also produced at this stage.

My first residential design of the course, The Southshore Cube House is a 7 metre cubed dwelling, designed for a young family. This design included my first thorough site investigation, as well as using local and historical context within the design. I was able to produce a concept that address wind, sun and light factors, with a specific focus on an efficient circulation flow. The irregular shaped form was created through a design exploration using elements that I identified from the shapes of the sand bar tidal formations within the neighboring Avon-Heathcote Estuary, along with shapes and colours seen of the distant Port Hills visible to the west of the house.

RESEAR CH & CONSE R VAT I O N C E N T R E 1st YEA R - CO NCE PTUAL DESIGN

The proposed design is for a Multi-use Research, Conservation and Education Centre located on a site on the banks of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

The Conservation Centre has a focus on biodiversity conservation, and environmental educational, and is intended to be a place to inspire, learn and share information amongst professionals and the general public. It includes a lecture theatre with views out over the estuary, a functioning studio office workspace and a fully catered kitchen and dining space for events.

The three buildings are connected by a short walkway, down a private road in a seclude spot.

The design is inspired by architectural gestures created through exploration of the estuary when viewed from above, through unique and unusual shapes that are developed into spaces, creating a relationship of Architecture & Place. The irregular shaped spaces and elements represent the curves and randomness of the estuary, while the design of multiple buildings represents the sand islands seen within the estuary, and how they flow and align together in perfect curves without ever touching. The three buildings are divided into spaces for offices, dining and a lecture theatre.
