Located on Grafton Street, Manchester, between two major campuses of the city - The University and the Royal Infirmary Hospital, and on the site of the former home of Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the suffragette movement. The Feminist Figures building is an active archive that aims to document local women's stories and also serve the community of Ardwick and its neighboring student campuses to form an intergenerational learning and meeting space. Building upon foundational Feminist Urban Theory the project looks at a re-modeled urban landscape, re-mapping a major artery route into the city to be safer and more accessible for all. The active archive uses cradle-to-cradle ideology to monitor carbon usage in all stages of the building and innovatively uses materials to create a lighthouse of the streetscape in a sustainable and budget friendly way.
