I started off by accurately observing the proportions of my face using tone to create form. I then began using colour and pose to explore the portrayal of emotions. This taught me to begin to separate colour and use tone more expressively. I further developed linear drawing techniques and separated and combined colour to represent different tones and forms.
I started to experiment with colour to create certain tones and atmospheres in my works. I also learnt how to use a base colour to create mid tones. I developed linear techniques through different materials and used intense colours to symbolise passionate emotions.
I began exploring how to merge and combine images using photoshop using blur effects and layering techniques. I then experimented with how to translate this into different media. I found that overlaying pen line drawings over solid drawings was effective in creating the transparent parts of the photoshopped image.
I learnt how to work precisely, scoring paper to create different folds.
Working 3D allowed me to experiment with how lighting affects the model due to the angles it hits giving different perspectives. This also allowed me to think of the space around and inside the model and consider them spatially rather than as just objects.
I sketched from the models I had made exploring different viewpoints. This allowed me to consider how various viewpoints make forms look and feel very different, such as how interior spaces do depending on where we are positioned inside them.
I chose to create geometric structures as they replicate the angles I enjoy in modern architecture. I drew them from different positions on a flat surface which allowed me to consider how the spaces below the paper fold might feel to inhabit. This encouraged me to think how smaller spaces may feel intimate whilst larger spaces of the bottom drawing would feel to stand on.
Taking photos of architecture and interior spaces encouraged me to look closely at the quality of the different building surfaces. For example, the juxtaposition of old and new in Pollok Country park causes me to reflect on the different atmosphere created in the smooth, shiny surfaces of the new buildings compared to the darker, more atmospheric of the old. This relates to my interests as I want to experiment with combining different surface areas.
Drawing and sketching interiors on location helps me to analyse how the structural components of the space contribute to the experiential qualities of the space.
Drawing exteriors allowed me to think about the patterns of a space and how they impact the atmosphere. The different scales of brickwork create a sense of rhythm which makes it all the more interesting.
Whilst completing this series of paintings and drawings, I experimented with lighting and the application of materials to explore the depiction of reflections.I used intense spotlights to create deep shadows and fierce colourful reflections to create a strong sense of drama and excitement within my work. This allowed me to have an increased understanding of how colour and lighting can transform objects and spaces and influence people’s moods and emotions.
