IMMIGRANT HOUSING

Fourth Year - Spring 2025

This project envisions a supportive housing solution for Afghan immigrants living under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in Washington, D.C. Rooted in cultural sensitivity and community empowerment, the design addresses the specific needs of the individual and families transitioning into life in the U.S. The historical Daniel Webster School was transformed into a residential environment that provides not only safe and affordable housing, but also spaces that reflect Afghan cultural values, such as communal gathering areas, designated prayer rooms, and adaptable family living units. The site’s location offers interaction with the wider D.C. community, promoting inclusivity and cultural exchange while creating a sense of stability and belonging for those under TPS.

This project was completed in partnership with Parisa Beladi.

The Daniel Webster School

Constructed in 1881, the Daniel Webster School is located in the heart of Washington, D.C. with many different histories. Orginally utilized as a school for white children in the neighborhood, the school was later converted to an “Americanization School” where immgrants in the area could go to learn English. After being used as language school, it was then used as a Girls’ Rehabilitation Center.

This 4 story, Romanesque Revival style building has since been abandoned in the 1970’s and is currently awaiting a new identity.

SEED TO SUCCESS

Fourth Year - Fall 2024

Formerly a slaughterhouse in Rome’s historic Testaccio neighborhood, this 13,000-squarefoot building was reimagined to serve as a career training center for young adults on the Autism spectrum. The design emphasizes hands-on education in crop cultivation and culinary skills, while fostering community integration through thoughtfully designed public spaces that welcome and engage the broader Testaccio neighborhood. This project was completed in partnership with Aeryn Smith.
